Editors Corner Just a few months ago, when asked what their largest challenge in business was, employers would respond ‘Hiring and retaining superior workers’. COVID-19 has effectively obliterated this challenge. The unemployment rate in the United States will peak at 25%, rivaling the worst period of the Great Depression, Goldman Sachs warned last month. The U.S. economy was already shifting toward more remote jobs even before the coronavirus pandemic struck. Now, with social distancing in place, working from home is more critical than ever. What will happen once we return to the ‘new normal’? Will employers be more confident in their teams’ ability to work remotely and still be highly productive? And will they recognize that this is a valuable benefit they can offer to prospective employees? I hope so. I remember the days when I worked for Intel, and needed some flexibility in my work schedule as a single mother. I felt productive, I just needed to be able to do an afterschool pick up, and then once returning to my home, I could continue working. With a position that involved communication regularly with other geographies, my work could take me well into the evening or even quite early in the morning. Most bosses I had during my tenure embraced this flexibility. My last boss didn’t, and he helped me to leave the company to purchase this magazine. I thank him to this day, though his management skills left much to be desired. There are just so many benefits to working at home, whether it is 1 day a week, or full time. The obvious advantage of remote work is that there is no need to commute to an actual workspace. The commute time to and from work each day for the average American is between 60-80 minutes, which can easily be eliminated with remote work. This is not just good for employees but it helps our environment.Take this statistic: In a study published last year, it estimated that if employees worked off-site even just half of the time, they would reduce the release of 54 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere equal to 119 billion miles of highway driving. That’s the equivalent of 640 million barrels of oil to the cost of a staggering $64 billion USD. For those employers thinking about allowing employees to work remotely, be assured that there are many, many examples of very successful businesses employing remote workers. Just to mention a few big names,American Express,Aetna, Hilton, Phillips,Thermo Fisher Scientific, Cisco, Johnson & Johnson,Wells Fargo, Grand Canyon University, Xerox,Amazon, and Dell all employ workers that don’t work on-site. And as we went to print, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that half of Facebook employees could work from home full-time within five to 10 years.Quantifiable benefits to allowing employees who can work from to do so, includes: Reduced Turnover - Companies that allow remote work have 25% lower employee turnover those that don’t. Increased Productivity - 66% of remote workers say they are more productive now than when they worked on-site at a company. Further, 83% of employees feel they do not need an office to be productive. Many remote workers say that ridding themselves from being confined to a standard office environment increases focus. Higher Job Satisfaction - 69% of millenials would give up other work benefits for a more flexible working space. Until next issue, God bless everyone on the front lines fighting our COVID-19 battle. May we all be well on the road to recovery, medically, financially and spiritually. May we learn important lessons that will help make our planet a better place for our next generations. May we also prioritize manufacturing, particularly for the medical industry, coming back to the US.

Announcements & Releases Utah COVID-19 Commercial Rental Assistance Program Utah small businesses that rent commercial property may receive pandemic relief from the Legislature.Today, following a legislative special session and appropriation, the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) announces the COVID-19 Commercial Rental Assistance Program.
As part of S.B. 3006, the COVID-19 Commercial Rental Assistance Program includes $40 million in commercial property rental assistance. GOED will administer the grants providing rental relief to Utah small businesses — including nonprofits, sole proprietors, independent contractors and those that are self-employed — that have lost revenue as a result of measures taken to minimize the public’s exposure to COVID-19. “The COVID-19 Commercial Rental Assistance Program will help many of Utah’s commercial property leasees in need of financial help because of the coronavirus pandemic,” saidVal Hale, GOED’s executive director. “We thank the Legislature for allocating $40 million in federal CARES Act funds to the program and hope the grants that are distributed will help Utah small businesses get back on their feet as quickly as possible.” The COVID-19 Commercial Rental Assistance Program was created on April 30, 2020, when Gov. Herbert signed S.B. 3006. Since then, GOED has worked to compile grant information, eligibility, required documentation, and to prepare an online application process. To be eligible for the Commercial Rental Assistance Program, applicants must: • • • • •
Have a current lease on commercial property in the state of Utah Claim Utah as their principal place of business Be in operation with fewer than 100 employees on Feb. 15, 2020 Demonstrate at least a 50% loss of gross monthly revenue after March 1, 2020, as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic Not received funds from the COVID-19 Agricultural Operations Grant Program (funded with federal CARES Act monies)
An applicant determined to meet eligibility requirements will receive an amount, not to exceed $10,000, between 25% and 100% of a single month of its business lease amount. The percentage will be based on a formula that takes into account the company’s loss of gross revenue and whether the company received funds from the CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) managed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. For applicants that did not receive PPP funds, grant amounts will be the lowest of 1) $10,000, or 2) 100% of monthly rent with a monthly gross revenue loss of 71% or more, or 3) 50% of monthly rent with a monthly gross revenue loss between 50% and 70%. Benchmarking: “How Can We Do Better?” “How can we do better?” is a question often asked on shop floors and in conference rooms. But how do we know what “better” means and how can we measure improvement? Inherent in this question is the concept of benchmarking—the process of identifying, capturing, and evaluating data against oneself or an outside party. This data provides a basis for defining, measuring, and improving performance. Thus, benchmarking gives us a definition of “better” and a way we can measure improvement. What should we be benchmarking? As opportunities for benchmarking are numerous, companies must focus on metrics that drive profitability and value—performance metrics, processes, and strategic initiatives. Examples of such include, but are not limited to, the following: •Revenue forecasts and growth •Material, labor, and unit costs •Gross and operating margins •Returns on revenue, assets, and net worth •Current, quick, and debt-to-equity ratios •Inventory, accounts receivable, and working capital turnover •Production volume, downtime, and cost •Capacity, utilization, yield, and throughput •Defects, errors and rework rates •Production backlog •On-time delivery •Safety incidents •Employee turnover

No matter the source of benchmarking data, the goal is to benchmark against the most current information available from companies like yours in terms of industry, size, and geographic territory.
What are the benefits of benchmarking? Ultimately, the goal of benchmarking is to increase profitability and cash flow by: •Identifying opportunities to increase revenue, reduce costs, improve quality, and become more efficient •Gaining insight into strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats •Combating organizational complacency and the perception that current performance is acceptable •Moving beyond an assessment that is based solely on opinion by providing both qualitative and quantitative measures •Supporting the need for a transformation of processes or even an entire organization Where do I find benchmarking information? When benchmarking internally, a company compares its current and projected performance against its own historical performance. The comparison of data is often day-over-day, month-over-month, or yearover-year. When benchmarking externally, industry trade associations and peer groups are good sources of data. Additionally, there are several thirdparty companies that collect financial data from tax returns and financial statements submitted to lending institutions.Your accounting firm should A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Conclusion Once you have identified the key metrics to benchmark, you can convert this information into higher profitability and cash flow by analyzing the data. Through understanding and addressing the gaps between your current performance and the benchmark, you will begin to increase profitability and cash flow, while answering the question, “How can we do better?” The practice of benchmarking also assists your leadership team in understanding and managing the key performance indicators that drive the value of your business. Not Quite A Car, Not Quite A Motorcycle: A Vehicle Built For One
ket that seems unbreakable.
For decades, the country’s bestselling vehicles have been pickup trucks. Hulking, g a s - p o we r e d m o d e l s f ro m Ford, Ram and Chevy have had a grip on the mar-
But there will always be companies that try to upend the status quo, powered by idealistic thinking and, ideally, deep pockets. One such company is set to take its shot this summer with a single-seat car called the Solo. A tiny, threewheeled electric, it will be available in Los Angeles later this year.“So many vehicles are being driven by one person,” said Paul Rivera, chief executive of the Solo’s manufacturer, ElectraMeccanica, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. “Why does everybody think they need to drive around and leave three or four empty seats?” Nearly 90% of Americans who commute by car, truck, van or motorcycle drive alone, according to the Census Bureau. Positioning itself as a right-size alternative to hauling around all of that excess automotive tonnage, the Solo takes up about a quarter of the space of a typical SUV. It also looks like a car — at least from the front — with the usual hood, grille and headlights.Take a peek A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain•

from behind, however, and it tapers down to just one wheel. Technically, the Solo is a motorcycle, though it’s fully enclosed and drives like a car with a steering wheel and foot pedals. It has only one seat, but it’s accessible with doors on both sides. It also has a trunk, and amenities common to a full-size passenger vehicle, including Bluetooth stereo, air conditioning and a backup camera. Having three wheels, it is not subject to the sorts of crash-testing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires for street-legal, four-wheeled vehicles, but it does have a seatbelt and an integrated roll bar. The Solo isn’t the first small, three-wheeled car to squeeze into the crowded automotive market. The Bond Bug, an angular British three-wheeler in pumpkin orange, went out of production in 1974, after four short years. Carver, based in the Netherlands, has been making different iterations of its leaning, three-wheeled “man-wide” vehicles since the 1990s. And the Corbin Sparrow, with its striking resemblance to Mother Hubbard’s shoe, failed to take off in any meaningful way after going into production in 1999. “There’s been so many of these,” said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book. “A lot of people want to solve the problem of clean, space-efficient, inexpensive personal transportation.” The coronavirus is changing the transportation landscape in ways that seemed unthinkable even two months ago.
Public transportation ridership is plummeting throughout the country. Cars are suddenly unaffordable to millions who have lost jobs. And the threat of climate change remains very real. So maybe — just maybe — the Solo has a chance. Arriving on the market when travelers are hesitant to touch what others have touched, it provides for social distancing. Priced at $18,500, it also costs about half as much as the current average sales price for a new passenger vehicle ($35,667 as of March 2020). And it has zero emissions, allowing for up to 100 miles of travel per charge at a top speed of 80 mph. It recharges with Level 1 or 2 chargers. The New York Times
RS Technologies Adds Utah Manufacturing Facility The Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) is pleased to announce that RS Technologies, Inc. (RS) will establish a manufacturing facility and office in Utah, creating up to 358 high-paying jobs in the next seven years. A private company manufacturing its utility poles in Canada since 2003, RS has over 400 customers in more than 25 countries. RS’s poles are rugged, fire-resistant, and suitable for use in a wide range of transmission, distribution and communication applications. RS currently produces and distributes its ultra-resilient and reliable poles worldwide from its manufacturing facility inTilbury, Ontario, Canada. “RS is excited about establishing its operations in Utah to supply more high-performance poles to the utility market,” stated
(303) 466-3777 foothillsmachinery.com Howard Elliott, president and CEO of RS. “The advantages of using an engineered product that excels in increasingly complex and challenging circumstances are becoming more apparent across North America. RS is pleased to be in a position to respond to growing market demand, and to do so from Utah.” RS may earn up to 20% of the new state taxes it will pay over the seven-year life of the agreement in the form of a Utah Legislature-authorized Economic Development Tax Increment Finance (EDTIF) tax credit. The GOED Board has approved a post-performance tax credit not to exceed $777,670. Each year that RS meets the criteria in its contract with the state, it will earn a portion of the total tax credit. The Utah Legislature has authorized economic development incentives in the form of post-performance tax credits. Eligible companies work with the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development to outline specific performance criteria. Once GOED confirms those criteria have been met, according to statute (U.C.A. 63N-2-106(2)), companies can receive a refund of up to 30% of the state taxes they paid for up to 20 years. The contract with the state is post-performance; it only provides a state tax credit if the company meets its obligations. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

NASA Awards $967M In Contracts For Next Moon Lander, And Colorado Firms Will Likely Be Along For The Ride Colorado aerospace companies are poised for a bigger role in the mission landing NASA astronauts on the moon in 2024. NASA inked $967 million in contracts funding three teams of companies developing landing systems that astronauts will use to transfer to and from the moon’s surface. The lander is considered the last major component to be developed for NASA’s lunar return. NASA named the effort the Artemis program because it will land the first woman on the moon. The biggest award of $579 million went to the team led by Blue Origin, the Kent, Washington-based company founded by Jeff Bezos. The team includes Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space as one of its major partners. The company, a division of Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp. is making the ascent system astronauts will use to return to a waiting Orion capsule floating on lunar orbit. Lockheed Martin Space is NASA’s contractor designing and building Orion capsules, the spaceship specially designed for the agency’s missions to the moon and Mars. The company’s involvement in Blue Origin’s lander team gave the proposal a “unique ability to leverage the Orion heritage system for the ascent vehicle,” said Lisa Watson-Morgan, program manager for NASA. The other two teams are led by Huntsville, Alabama-based Dynetics, which won a $253 million contract, and Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX, which won $135 million, NASA said. The Blue Origin and Dynetics teams plan to use a Vulcan rocket made by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance to get their landing systems to the moon. And in the case of the Blue Origin team, the proposal includes an uncrewed flight to test the landing system before astronaut fly the 2024 moon mission, NASA said. Each of the commercial teams is paying for some of their landers’ development, too. The agency wants the lander it selects to be re-usable “over and over again” to make the investment part of a longterm, sustainable lunar presence.
The contracts announced last month run for 10 months. NASA will review the lander teams’ progress and expects to fund projects in another round of contracts before choosing a landing system for the 2024 mission. SpaceX’s proposal involves a surface landing on the moon with the company’s “super heavy” Starship rocket, which is under development and designed to carry dozens of tons of cargo and people. Sending the reusable rocket ship to the moon is part of the company’s larger vision of space exploration that will one day establish a sustained city on Mars, said Elon Musk , SpaceX’s founder and CEO. “Our country, and in fact the entire world, has been shaken by this coronavirus pandemic,” Bridenstine said. “We need to give people something to look up to and dream about, and something that can inspire not just the nation but the entire world. That’s what NASA does.” NASA’s $24 billion annual budget is small by federal government standards, he said, and there’s no appetite now to cut spending on programs that support jobs. Colorado’s largest utility company is willing to spend $102 million expanding metro-area infrastructure for electric vehicles, but it wants state regulators to let it change how it bills for electricity as part of the process.
The PUC commissioners have said they’ll only accept a broader time-of-use rate structure that doesn’t increase what customers pay for electricity overall.
Xcel Energy Inc. submitted its first transportation electrification plan to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, the power company’s first time doing as required by a state law passed in 2019.
Xcel Energy has a request before the PUC to expand time-of-use rates across its customer base. PUC hearings on the request are scheduled for June 16-19.
The electrical utility, which serves 1.5 million customers mostly in the Denver metro area, forecasts quadrupling electric vehicles in its service area from about 24,000 to 100,000 electric cars and trucks by 2023.That’s the year Xcel predicts it will have completed its $102 million infrastructure investment.
Separately, the PUC will be taking public comment on the broader transportation electrification plan and will hold hearings on Xcel’s proposals later this year, said Terry Bote, spokesman for the PUC.
It foresees electric vehicle use a quadrupling again to more than 450,000 vehicles by 2030. To make the electric vehicle plan work, though Xcel Energy argues it should be allowed to shift electricity rate structures to reward people for using electricity at off-peak demand times, which helps stabilize the electricity grid. Xcel Energy has explored time-of-use rate structures for years, and four years ago started tests of pricing structure and the advanced meters that time-of-use billing requires. A few thousand homes in the metro area have been in pilot time-of-use tests voluntarily.
Xcel argues the total benefit to consumers, based on an analysis by Englewood-based consulting firm E3, values the grid benefits of electric vehicle charging at more than $3,589 per vehicle, and the scale of what Xcel Energy proposes would have an aggregate economic benefit to consumers of $1 billion. On top of that, the electric vehicles would require 1.3 million fewer tons of carbon dioxide emissions to be generated than those same cars and trucks would create burning gas, Xcel estimates. That would be a five-fold CO2 emissions reduction compared to the equivalent number of cars, and the utility wants some credit for that under Colorado rules requiring utilities reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2030. Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 A Tax Credit for COVID-19 Innovation
•
Corporations in diverse sectors are responding to the exceptional challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic by optimizing their supply chains and transitioning to alternative processes to maintain essential operations in times of great uncertainty.
•
Manufacturers are repurposing production and research competencies to support the war on COVID-19, and are offsetting disruption by transforming idle resources to deliver relevant and advanced medical solutions and protective gear. They are doing so in response to urgent needs to help the public. The R&D tax credit, first enacted by Congress in 1981, incentivizes an enormous range of activities for companies of all sizes for work done within the United States. Many activities that manufacturing companies already engage in regularly can potentially qualify. If businesses undertake certain innovations, repurposing, optimizations, ideation, or research into alternative methods that entail overcoming uncertainty in producing COVID-19 solutions, they may benefit from this tax incentive. But the credit continues to be underutilized by qualified companies and their business management teams primarily due to a misunderstanding of qualification and documentation requirements for federal and state credits, fear of triggering an IRS audit in the current or prior year tax returns, and the perception of the credits as being limited in scope or requiring new-to-the world innovations. The R&D credit is available to taxpayers for incur incremental expenses for qualified research, such as: • •
Wages paid for qualified services. Supplies used and consumed in the R&D process.

Contractor fees up to 65% (for qualified research activities—QRAs—on the taxpayer’s behalf, regardless of the success of the research)d Basic research payments to qualified educational institutions and scientific research organizations.
To qualify for the R&D credit, the activity must meet four tests: 1. The activity must rely on science, such as engineering, computer science, biological science, or physical science. 2. The activity must relate to the development of new or improved functionality, performance, reliability, or quality features, including product or process designs that a firm develops for clients. 3. Technological uncertainty must exist at the outset of the activity. 4. A process of experimentation must be conducted to eliminate the technological uncertainty. This includes assessing a design through modeling or computational analysis and experimenting with engineering, mechanics, formulations, and materials. Qualifying R&D activities as they apply to manufacturing industries generally fall into one of four general categories: New product development. Incremental product development. New process development.

Under the traditional method, the credit is 20% of the smaller of the current-year qualified research expenses in excess of a base amount, or 50% of the current-year qualified research expenses. One of the factors used in the calculation of the base amount is historical qualified research expenses. Using the traditional method, some taxpayers are required to determine their qualified research expenses as far back as 1984.

Precision aluminum and zinc die casting, machining and finishing. Quality, Reliability and Service
The ASC credit is 14% of the current-year qualified research expenses in excess of 50% of the average qualified research expenses for the three tax years preceding the tax year for which the credit is being determined. Since the ASC only requires examination of expenses in the credit year and for the prior 3 years, it is a less burdensome. While claiming the credit requires time, resources and expertise, it can also provide significant financial and operational benefits. Even companies currently operating at a loss may benefit because credits generated but not used can be carried back one year and forwarded up to 20 years. And if the company is acquired, the credits can be considered a valuable future asset in negotiating a selling price for the business.Ultimately, the final value of an R&D tax credit rests with its sustainability upon IRS examination. It is worthwhile for manufacturing companies to examine their internalprocesses and evaluate whether they might benefit from this generous tax credit, especially at a time when they need additional funds.By:Yair Holtzman

Your ‘Must’ Go-To Company For AS9100 Certified Extremely Large Parts Manufactured With The Premier MAZAK INTEGREX E-1850V-12 GL Manufacturing is a relatively new company, just in its 3rd year of operation. The Veteran-owned company is already ISO and AS9100 certified, and they own the largest INTEGREX that Mazak manufactures. Just these two attributes make the company stand out. John Kimball is the founder of GL Manufacturing. He is a machinist by trade, and the Kimball family owns Kimball Equipment Company, which is a dealer for mineral processing systems. In business since 1946, the company is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has 9 locations across several states (AZ, NV, CA and ID).The equipment Kimball Equipment sells is quite massive — it includes crushers and conveyors, and with resident engineering expertise, it designs and builds custom conveyors, chutes, hoppers, portable carriers, supporting structures, and more. GL Manufacturing was formed for 3 main reasons: 1. To build parts for the equipment it has sold in the past that it can’t get from its manufacturers 2. To diversify into other industries, including aerospace and defense 3. To support customers who require very large, highly complex parts, manufactured efficiently John says, “Our team of approximately 150 employees across our family owned companies is quite talented. We do an exceptional job making very large complex parts for our Kimball business and for other dealers all around the world. As we looked for opportunities to diversify our customer base through GL Manufacturing, we knew AS9100 certification would be a key requirement, particularly for breaking into the aerospace industry. And though GL Manufacturing would be a start up company, we felt it would be better to get certified in the early years; we wouldn’t yet have bad habits that we needed to undo!” He adds that GL Manufacturing’s equipment and knowledge is well suited for machining parts such as engine blocks. He says, “Any customer who needs large steel parts processed quickly, we can support better than other shops because our INTEGREX is so highly efficient.”
John says, “Prior to opening GL Manufacturing and purchasing the MAZAK INTEGREX E-1850V/12, we were repairing parts and A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

making new parts for our mineral processing systems primarily using manual machining. Our parts can be as large as 72” in diameter, and they can weigh several tons. The Mazak INTEGREX E1850V/12 is increasing our efficiency dramatically; it takes 10% or less of the time on a given part on the Mazak than it takes with manual machining.”
turning operations and pallet-changing capabilities to productively process large, highly complex parts from a variety of work piece materials.” Clark says it is the largest INTEGREX Smith Machinery has sold to date.
John and his team were quite familiar with the Mazak machines. “We have some older machines at Kimball Equipment that we purchased used. Though we didn’t buy them from Smith Machinery, the dealer for the Mazak line here in Salt Lake City, we used them for our servicing needs. They’ve done such a good job for us over the years, and we really like the Mazak machines.” He continued, “When we made the decision to purchase a state-of-the-art in technology lathe, we did a lot of internal research on several machine tool brands, but we didn’t feel a need to bring in several machine tool dealers to hear their pitch. We went right for the Mazak and Smith Machinery.” Prior to the purchase, Clark’s team accompanied members of GL Manufacturing to 2 customers in San Diego who owned several INTEGREX E-1850V/12 machines. Clark says, “Both of these companies are building mission critical parts, and the shop tours helped the team at GL Manufacturing feel more comfortable about their purchase decision.”
Because the machine is able to perform all milling and turning operations in a single setup, companies like GL Manufacturing can reduce the problems (time and accuracy) that occur when moving heavy parts across multiple workstations, it also lowers work-inprocess inventory and boosts overall throughput. It is the future of manufacturing in the U.S.
Clark says, “It is such a pleasure to work with John and his team. I feel like we have some similarities in our businesses. Both started generations ago, and in fact, our fathers went to school together. I think we share values and respect for technology and quality products.”
He adds, “The INTEGREX E-1850V/12 Multi-Tasking machine is a very high-tech machine. It combines full 5-axis machining, vertical
He adds, “GL Manufacturing is unique in our area of the country. There are not many shops that specialize in large parts that have made the investment that John has. The companies in our area of the country who are machining very large parts are doing it with lower technology machines. The larger the part, the more difficult it is to meet the tolerances required. The INTEGREX platforms ‘DONE-IN-ONE’ technology meets the growing demands of the customers, whether it’s 10” in diameter or 72” in diameter!”

What’s next for GL Manufacturing? John says, “We are evaluating Mazak Integrex horizontal machining centers, and once we determine the best model for our business, that will be our next purchase.” He adds, “For the past decade, we have become very familiar with Smith Machinery’s excellent service capabilities. With the purchase of the Mazak Integrex, we have learned how superior their application support is.” John says, “We love the two-pallet changer that comes standard on the machine. Our ability to set up and dial in on a part while another is running is invaluable.”
Clark says, “The team at GL Manufacturing went through extensive training on their Integrex, and in these couple of years where they have continued to gain expertise and efficiencies, they are now poised to support customers in other industries.” He adds, “The INTEGREX E-1850V/12 Multi-Tasking machine can cut metals that span aluminum and stainless steel, and then all the way to exotic metals including Inconel, Hastelloy and Titanium.”
He added, “Our INTEGREX has exceptional accuracy and everything works well.We haven’t even filled up the tool changer, which holds up to 120 tools.”

AUTHORIZED QUALICHEM DISTRIBUTOR
QualiChem, Inc. and Star Metal Fluids would like to thank all of our customers in Arizona and Utah who have responded to the call to help fight the COVID-19 virus. We are aware that there are multiple companies in each state participating in programs that include COVID-19 test kits, personal protective equipment, and ventilator components. While most of these companies do not want to be singled out or recognized by name, we believe it important enough to the local manufacturing community that their contributions not go without thanks. Your friends, your neighbors, your peers, and perhaps in some cases, your competitors, are doing what they can to ensure we get back to a more normal way of life. American manufacturers of all sizes, from all regions and industries, are stepping up to fight this invisible enemy. Whether redirecting resources toward production of open-source face shields, ventilator components, or test kits, Americans are heeding the call. And while we thank these manufacturers, it is more important to acknowledge the real heroes in this battle: the healthcare professionals, the pharmacists, the truckers, the grocery store employees, and all those who remain engaged with the public despite the risks. Together, as Americans in all capacities, we will overcome. Thank you to everyone for doing their share. Sincerely, The management teams at QualiChem, Inc. and Star Metal Fluids

The coronavirus pandemic that has forced many to stay at home and thrown millions out of work hasn’t stopped Lockheed Martin Space from bringing on hundreds of new employees in recent weeks. The Jefferson County-based aerospace company is hiring to fill hundreds of other local jobs and about 1,200 nationally, so it hasn’t slowed its recruiting. “National security doesn’t stop, and we play a critical role in that for our customers,” said Renu Aggarwal, the company’s director of global talent acquisition. Lockheed Martin Space hired and started 148 new employees from March 23 through April 10. It has another 250 new recruits who have accepted new positions in recent weeks and will soon start. The company is filling a total of 750 open positions locally now out of the 1,200 it has open companywide. Those full-time workers are in addition to hundreds of new hires from U.S. colleges and universities Lockheed Martin Space has recruited throughout the academic year and who will soon start after the semester’s end. “Across the U.S., we have 1,600 college hires and interns that will be joining us this summer,” Aggarwal said. ”A little over 800 are specifically coming to one of our locations in Colorado.” The college recruits are split evenly between permanent hires starting their careers with Lockheed Martin Space and half coming as summer interns, she said. Lockheed Martin Space is one of four major business units of defense giant Lockheed Martin Corp. It employs 21,045 people worldwide, 8,314 of them in the Denver metro-area. spaces sprawl across a 2,000-acre campus in the foothills southwest of the metro area near the mouth of Waterton Canyon. It designs and builds satellites, scientific space probes and other space hardware — including NASA’s Orion capsule — for federal government agencies and U.S. military. Much of its workforce is made up of engineers: software engineers, radio frequency engineers, systems engineers, mechanical engineers and others. The company’s work is designated a critical industry federally, which means it’s continuing to operate despite the pandemic and public restrictions meant to limit the spread of the COVID-19 disease. A lot of design work at Lockheed Martin Space, jobs supporting the technical programs and company administration has shifted to being work-from-home. That’s a big switch from the company’s traditional culture, but not for Lockheed Martin Space’s far-flung recruiting team.
In fact, other companies have rescinded job offers to college-age recruits which has, in turn, increased the number of recruits saying yes to a job with Lockheed Martin Space, she said. Alternately, some mid-career workers the company might recruit in normal times are deciding now isn’t a time to switch employers, she said. The company has organized recruiting events for lots of potential job candidates using the online video platform Zoom, and found success, she said. It held one recruiting event that attracted 200 members of the National Society of Black Engineers a few days ago.
Its members travel a lot and has worked remotely by necessity since long before the coronavirus pandemic, Aggarwal said. It’s still managing about 100 new recruits per week filling new jobs and replacing current workers who leave, she said. Many things at a manufacturer can’t be done remotely. Lockheed Martin Space has shifted to have most jobs start as work-from-home and carefully assessing which jobs can’t, Aggarwal said. Lockheed Martin Space already used online meetings with multiple candidates at once in its recruiting process, but that’s become far more important now, Aggarwal said.
The economic fallout from the pandemic hasn’t limited Lockheed Martin Space’s recruiting so far, Aggarwal said.
Aggarwal expects Lockheed Martin Space will keep using them after the pandemic is over, and she predicts other companies will adopt those, too. “I think virtual hiring events will become more of the norm,” she said. By Greg Avery, Denver Business Journal

Utah Companies Change Plans, And Make New Products, To Join The COVID-19 Battle
CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1
In mid-May, for the first time in more than a month, all the workers at the tent manufacturer Springbar were back in their Millcreek factory, where they usually make the canvas tents that have been the company’s stock and trade since World War II. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing businesses to shut down or alter their workplaces, about half the employees at Springbar, formerly Kirkham’s Outdoor Products, had been sewing from home. The workers aren’t just making tents, though. For the past three weeks, they also have been sewing personal protective equipment for health care workers treating COVID-19 patients. Springbar is one of several Utah companies that have refitted manufacturing facilities and introduced new product lines to help health care workers dealing with the coronavirus. “It was a good opportunity for us when the COVID situation started, and we didn’t want to have folks working in the shop,” said Pace Measom, Springbar’s owner. Measom hit on the idea when his brother, a doctor performing his residency at Dartmouth, talked to him about shortages in medical protective equipment as the COVID-19 pandemic began. The company looked into the idea and within weeks was contacted by the Utah Department of Health about making gowns. “We made a sample in a couple hours, and had a purchase order a couple hours after that,” Measom said. The company received a contract with the state of Utah to produce 3,500 of the coverall-like gowns. A snorkeling mask, made by Draper-based Wildhorn Outfitters, has been refitted with an N95 respirator filter for use by health care workers treating COVID-19 patients.Designers atWildhorn started working on ways to attach an N95 filter — a standard part of most hospital respirators — to where a snorkel ordinarily goes on the company’s Seaview 180º masks. It took about two weeks,Thomas said, “to go from the initial computer design all the way to a 3D print that we were comfortable with.”
Soon after Wildhorn started4/6/2020 refitting 2:04:17its PM snorkeling masks for health care workers, one nonprofit bought 5,000 masks. Transitioning to a coronavirus-related product was a big move for HHI Corp., an Ogden-based general contractor that normally builds chemical and biological test centers, aircraft maintenance platforms and mobile facilities for the U.S. military. In April, HHI started offering two new mobile systems in response to the pandemic: a mobile triage unit, where doctors can assess which patients need treatment soonest; and portable test labs, which can be deployed to hot spots where COVID-19 tests are most needed. HHI announced plans to make 10 triage units — each one with room for 12 hospital beds, plus nurses’ stations and support equipment. The units are wired for electricity, ventilation with HEPA filters, and potable water and waste connections. The first one is slated to be completed near the end of this month and shipped to Boston in six modified container boxes. By Sean P. Means

EPTAM Precision Solutions Awarded Contract To Manufacture Ventilator Components and Assemblies: Purchasing 6 New Haas VF2 –SSYT Machines To Accommodate Production Just as the United States was bracing itself to combat COVID-19 back in March, EPTAM Precision Solutions was asked by one of its customers to provide a proposal for manufacturing parts and sub-assemblies for thousands of much needed ventilators. Founded in 1981, EPTAM is a diversified contract manufacturer of medical device components, medical implants, and complex system assemblies (e.g. catheters, bone plates and intramedullary nails). The company has particular expertise with plastic, metal and injection molded components, and also offers a range of value-added services such as process validation, design and program management, including assembly, packaging, labeling, inventory management and testing. EPTAM has nearly 400 employees with operations in New Hampshire, Colorado and New Jersey, and across the 3 facilities, occupies ~170,000 square footage. Late last year, Frazier Healthcare Partners acquired the company. Shaun Francel, General Manager of the Colorado Springs metals division, says, “One of our existing customers was awarded a large contract to manufacture ventilators. At EPTAM, we’re known for our implantable medical device manufacturing, but haven’t manufactured ventilators in our past. Nonetheless, our customer offered us the opportunity to demonstrate proof of concept with samples before they would award us the business.” Shaun’s team worked around the clock to support their customers’ request. In just two weeks, they produced samples and were able to demonstrate that between their New Hampshire and Colorado
manufacturing lines, they could meet their customers’ requirements. Shaun says, “Over the next year, we will be manufacturing hundreds of thousands of components and subassemblies for ventilators.” All 3 divisions of EPTAM are ISO certified, and the divisions in New Hampshire and Colorado are FDA Registered and certified to ISO 13485, which is the quality standard for the design and manufacture of medical devices. While ventilators are a new product for EPTAM, the company has a long history in manufacturing implantable devices. Shaun says, “As a medical device manufacturer, we are very accustomed to operating in a highly regulated industry. As such, we have always been proactive in our discipline for cleanliness, quality, and adherence to processes. This definitely helped us to win the contract for ventilators.” And because of its industry expertise in medical devices, the Colorado division is equipped with an in-house ISO 7 Cleanroom (Class 10,000).
EPTAM Medical Parts
Prior to winning this new contract, EPTAM Metals in Colorado had 16 3 and 4-axis Haas milling centers. Shaun says, “By purchasing equipment in cells, we ensure that our customers’ products can run on any number of machines without costly tooling changes.” Tony Rudd, Sales Engineer from MMT, A Division of Productivity, and key account representative supporting EPTAM, says, “EPTAM purchases a number of options on their Haas machines to maximize their efficiency, including: pallet changers, high speed spindles, high production tool changers (50 tools), and Coolant Management. All of their Haas Vertical Machining Centers are VF-2s, which is our most popular model, and the workhorse of any shop.” Business was very good for EPTAM prior to the COVID-19 virus, and Shaun says, “All of our spindles were turning.” The new contract would require substantially more spindles, 6 to be exact.

Shaun says, “For our CNC milling centers we purchase Haas exclusively. We believe in consistency, and when we pick a brand, we ‘pick and stick’ on the platform. The Haas machine tools are distributed exclusively in this region through MMT, a Division of Productivity.” He added, “We’ve been doing business with MMT for about a decade now. They provide excellent machine tools, and their services and applications support is outstanding.”
Tony says, “Haas recognizes the urgency created by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, they are expediting any machines that customers are purchasing specifically to manufacture PPE. Shaun and the Colorado EPTAM team needed 6 new Haas VF2-SSYT machines built immediately, and they needed them customized with the options they have on their current machines. Once we secured the PO from EPTAM, Haas custom built all 6 machines in under 2 weeks, and then they were shipped immediately to EPTAM.” Shaun says, “They will arrive this coming Monday (which was in mid-May), we’ll do the rigging ourselves, and then on Tuesday, MMT is bringing not just 2 team members for the installation, but they have secured through Haas an additional 2 service engineers to help with the install.” Shaun expects the team to begin manufacturing ventilator components the week the machines arrive (mid May). “We have a very strong relationship with our machine tool partner, MMT”, Shaun says. “We continue to rely on their expertise, whether it is service, applications support, and we regularly EPTAM Team Members get their support for time studies.” He added, Safely Working “I’ve known Tony Rudd for the past 10 years, even before he was with MMT. Tony is a top notch Sales Engineer for us.” Business was good for EPTAM and now it is booming with the addition of their contract with a long-term customer who is supplying ventilators all over the world. Shaun says, “We have a great team here, and everyone was 100% on-board to work extremely long hours to support the COVID effort.” He added, “With our growth, we need more people. If you are a great machinist (or an entry level machinist) with a superior work ethic, we have open positions for you in our Colorado Springs facility.” Interested applicants should send their resume to www.eptam.com/career-opportunities. EPTAM offers superior benefits and encourages continuous improvement, providing financial support for their employees who go to school. MMT, A Division of Productivity, is honored to support its customers, and during these very challenging times, is even prouder to be able to help those customers supporting PPE to help with COVID-19. Tony says, “We have an amazing team at MMT, we have 15 full time Service Technicians and 4 Application Engineers.” Last year, MMT was awarded ‘Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) Dealer Of The Year’, an honor, Tony says, from a USA based machine tool builder that sells its machines all over the world.” He says that MMT and Productivity are additionally proud to say that during the COVID-19 pandemic, they did not let one of their employees go.

Bretta Kelly, owner of Business Management Systems Consulting (BMSC), began her consulting career in 1999; implementing, managing, training and auditing ISO 9000 and AS 9000 programs for semiconductor, aerospace, chemical, cosmetic and distribution companies. More than ninety percent of her customers’ certification audits result in zero non-conformances, and of the remaining, no more than one or two. She also conducts third party audits for several registrars in a wide variety of industries. In addition, she and her partner Debbie Hart conduct internal audits and facilitate management reviews for her clients on an on-going basis, helping them analyze data and implement cost saving improvements in their business operations. Their certifications include QMS Lead Auditor and AS Auditor. Bretta holds a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Arizona State University. Bretta’s experience ranges from process control systems for Intel Corporation, ISO systems management at Varian Tempe Electronics to implementation of Business Management Systems for more than 200 Aerospace, Electronics, and other manufacturing companies. Bretta began as a reseller of CIS Software in 2005 and is part owner and President of CIS World Wide Sales Group, LLC. Bretta says, “CIS (Continuous Improvement Software) is an affordable quality management software with customers ranging from 5 employees to 500+ employees. Every aspect of your business and the company’s ISO 9001 or AS9100 system is maintained transparently using CIS Software with email notifications and automated internal audit modules and key performance indicator / objectives tracking.
Hear From BMSC’s Customers “One of our customers highly recommended Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC, to prepare us for certification. We contacted Bretta, and immediately hired her as our consultant.” She adds, “When we first met Bretta, there was no question in our minds that she would be the best consultant for our young company.” A1 Precision “Bretta and her colleague Debbie Hart were outstanding. They are so knowledgeable about the process, and our relationship with them made the experience very rewarding.” T-N Machining “One of our fears about certification was that we would bring in a consultant and they would tell us all the ways we needed to change the way we were doing business. That didn’t happen with BMSC – they helped us with documenting processes we were already doing, and in some cases, helped us to improve processes.” Valley Precision “The ISO experience was significantly easier than we expected, and we can say this is thanks to the help from BMSC.They effectively laid the groundwork that simplified the entire process.” Sun Grinding “I liken Bretta and Debbie’s team ability to ours – both women have unique strengths, and when Bretta and Debbie came to help us to achieve AS9100 certification, they were like a smooth running machine. They work seamlessly together. They are such a great fit and did an outstanding job at capturing the tone of our shop.” Peterson Machining “I was anxious about the investment required for certification and the level of work we would have to exert to achieve it. Bretta and Debbie continued to boost my confidence — not only are they so knowledgeable but they are also extremely supportive. They weren’t the least bit surprised that our Audit was so successful that we had ‘0’ findings. The processes we’ve further established with ISO 9001 and AS9100 have resulted in lower scrap rates.” Ayers Gear “We interviewed Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC, for our AS9100 consultant. We didn’t interview other consultants because these same precision machine shops who said we’d need a consultant, also all recommended Bretta.” Cleveland Electric Labs Are you ready to implement a new ISO 9001:2015 or AS9100D / ISO 9001:2015 System or simplify your current Quality Management System? of the past that eliminated jobs, closed factories and left communities in tatters after economic downturns. Now more than ever, it is clear that a continuation of these failed federal policies could devastate our country, our communities and our families. Together with elected officials in Washington and state capitals, we must ensure that policies are focused on initiatives that reinforce American jobs and our manufacturing supply chain security. U.S. automakers that have not committed to manufacturing investment here or have moved operations overseas should not be rewarded. Using taxpayer dollars to subsidize products manufactured outside the U.S. is nothing more than bad policy and would send a devastating message to the UAW members who stepped up for our nation in this time of need and who — I want to make this very clear — will be on the front lines of getting America back to work. Our national leaders and governors will have tough choices to make, but they must not waver when it comes to our American workers. When it is time to restart production, we must help drive a manufacturing renaissance that will support jobs and communities across this country. Manufacturing sets the tone for our national economy. It’s time to invest in U.S. workers and products here at home.Source: Automotive News By: Rory Gamble

In addition to providing data on solar activity that can interfere with Earthorbiting satellite operations and terrestrial power grids, the mission will also help to warn astronauts assigned to future deep space exploration destinations like the Moon and Mars of potential solar radiation threats. The $62.6 million mission will launch no earlier than July 1, 2023, according to a March 30 announcement. SunRISE’s six small satellites will be launched as a rideshare with a MaxarTechnologies commercial satellite. Once in orbit, the SunRISE spacecraft will be deployed from a Payload Orbital Delivery System to fly within 6 mi. of each other and equipped to create three-dimensional maps of the Sun that illustrate the burst point and how the blast is expanding into space. Led by University of Michigan researcher Justin Kasper and managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, SunRISE was among proposals initially selected in 2017 as a mission of opportunity under NASA’s Explorer Program. Following an 11-month concept study, SunRISE was approved in February 2019 for additional formulation.

plans a 180,000-square-foot expansion project and a new innovation center in the investment. The project was codenamed Project Salvo when the OEDIT awarded the company $4.2 million in incentives for it in July 2019. Emerson already has about 700 employees in Boulder. Emerson’s expansion includes an 85,000-square-foot laboratory and manufacturing facility to design and develop products, technologies and software that measure and control the flow of material in a manufacturing process. Emerson’s Micro Motion facility, which focuses on the measurement of flow and viscosity, is based in Boulder. Emerson’s incentives included a Job Growth Incentive Tax Credit for the creation of 252 net new jobs, with an average annual wage of $109,250. The jobs will be spread out across engineering, marketing, sales and operations departments. “As an entrepreneur, I saw firsthand how Colorado’s talent and market strengths can fuel innovation,” said Gov. Jared Polis in a prepared statement. “This timely investment in Coloradans and our state is a bold statement about our economic power and the bright opportunities that lie ahead.” By Jensen Werley – Reporter, Denver Business Journal
