Wow, our manufacturing industry in the US forged ahead through unprecedented obstacles this past year and a half, and we have clearly shown remarkable resilience. It has paid off, as by all indicators, our industry is poised for continued growth over the foreseeable future ahead. Per the National Association of Manufacturing (NAM), manufacturing activity remains robust, especially demand, with the U.S. economy continuing to rebound from the sizable declines in spring 2020. Its findings demonstrate that real GDP and manufacturing production now exceeds pre-pandemic levels, which is encouraging. In fact, when the NAM survey participants were asked when they expect revenues to return to pre-pandemic levels, more than half (58.6%) said that their revenues had already rebounded. Similar projections are provided in Deloitte’s 2021 Manufacturing Industry Outlook, where 63% of manufacturing executives reported feeling somewhat or very positive in their business outlook. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM)’s most recent projections derived from a Q2 survey this year showed the following projections for 2021:

• Manufacturing Revenue Growth of 7.2% • Investment in Capital Equipment to increase by 8.7% • Capacity Utilization of 88.3%

In the ISM survey, key is the number of participants who anticipate positive business indicators. For example, nearly 60% expect revenues to grow this year, with only 8% projecting a decline (the remainder expect a flat 2021). Likewise, in the ISM survey, respondents forecasted an 8.7% increase in capital expenditures in 2021, much higher than their year-end 2020 forecast of 2.4%. Summarizing, industry researchers clearly show projected revenue growth, increased capital expenditures, and healthy capacity utilization. Still, in all surveys, significant challenges remain. In particular, NAM’s study cites that in addition to rising costs, other top challenges in the third quarter include the inability to attract and retain a quality workforce (80.0%), supply chain challenges (79.8%), transportation and logistics costs (69.1%) and rising health care and insurance costs (52.2%). What does this all mean for us in the manufacturing industry? I believe it means that those who put in place plans to mitigate the challenges will emerge much healthier than those who do not. I met with a company recently who saw their highest revenues and profitability ever last year, during our Pandemic. How did they do this? Well , a number of factors contributed to this. For one, they brought in new business with more complex parts, and this meant higher margins. 2nd, they invested in new machine tools and software that reduced their dependence on skilled employees. In fact, they operated last year with 10% less employees than they had in the previous year, while increasing revenues by more than 30%. In closing, I encourage you to have the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. Your business will most assuredly be the better for it. Metalforming companies expect business conditions during the next three months to continue to prove challenging, according to the September 2021 Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Business Conditions Report. Prepared monthly, the report provides an economic indicator for manufacturing, sampling 114 metalforming companies in the United States and Canada. PMA’s September report shows that only 26% of metalforming companies forecast an increase in economic activity in the next three months (decreasing from 29% in August and down 10% compared to July), 56% predict no change (compared to 57% last month) and 18% anticipate a decline in activity (increasing from 14% in August). Sixty-one percent of respondents reported an increase in lead times, slightly down from 64% in August. “The September PMA Business Conditions Report reflects the fact that members are facing continued uncertainties related to the supply of raw materials to meet demand, the ongoing chip shortages that are impacting large customers and the continued shortage of workers,” said PMA President David Klotz. “Lead times and skyrocketing prices for raw materials, particularly steel, but also for aluminum, copper, brass and other metals, continue to grow and now extend into 2022 in some cases. The difficulty in finding and maintaining skilled workers is also a major focus for PMA, with our association and members engaged in a proactive campaign to drive awareness about the great careers in our industry and programs to strengthen workforce training such as METALFORM EDU. Additionally, through our One Voice advocacy team in Washington, D.C., we continue to advocate to end the damaging Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs to help increase materials supply.” Announcements Con’t Next Page

Announcements Continued Metalformers also expect a decrease in incoming orders in the next three months, with 35% forecasting an increase in orders (compared to 41% in August), 42% predicting no change (the same percentage as last month) and 23% anticipating a decrease in orders (compared to 17% in August). Current average daily shipping levels remained fairly steady in September, with 49% reporting an increase (compared to 46% in August), 36% reporting no change (decreasing from 42% last month) and 15% reporting a decrease (compared to 12% in August). Four percent of responding metalforming companies had a portion of their workforce on short time or layoff in September, compared to only 2% in August. Based on the optimistic figures, with 83% expecting at least slight sales increases and 79% expecting similar production increases, NAM predicted sales would grow by 5.64% and production would grow 5.4% on average over the next twelve months. Breaking the results down by company size, small manufacturer optimism grew while medium and large manufacturers hedged their expectations somewhat. Positive outlooks among smaller manufacturers—companies with fewer than 50 employees, in NAM’s terms—rose about 3 points in the third quarter to 83.1%, while medium-sized manufacturers reporting good conditions fell 2.5 points to 88.6%. Large-company optimism hit 88.1%, down 8.4 points from its June figure of 96.5%, an all-time high. Despite the optimism on display in the survey, manufacturers are not without problems, many of them longstanding. On a list of business challenges, 86.4% of surveyed companies said they were having trouble with increased raw material costs, and more than 90% of respondents said they expected those prices to continue climbing. NAM estimated raw materials prices would rise about 6.48% based on those results. Eighty percent of companies said they were having trouble attracting and retaining a quality workforce, even as 68.2% said they expected to increase full-time employment. Workforce shortages were seen by 81.5% of respondents as the biggest risk to the current economic outlook. Other current business challenges listed by manufacturers included supply chain difficulties (79.8%), transportation and logistics costs (69.1%), rising health care or insurance costs (52.2%) and A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain•

unfavorable business climate (41.2%). While less than 50% listed listed taxes and regulations as a primary business challenge, most manufacturers agreed that increased taxes on income from manufacturing activities would have a detrimental effect on their business. Nine out of ten said increased taxes would hinder hiring, wage increases, new equipment investments and expanded facilities. In a statement released September 9, the same day as the survey, NAM CEO Jay Timmons said that tax increases proposed by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo would cause 1 million jobs lost in two years. Timmons also noted that manufacturing wages have grown significantly over the last few years, including by 2.8% in 2019 and 3% in 2020. The September survey predicts wages will rise by 3.5% in the year to come, which would be a record high for the survey. Rising COVID-19 cases, including due to the delta mutation of the virus, were seen as potentially perilous by just under 50%. More than half, 58.6%, of firms say their revenue has already returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Successful C-130 Test Flight Moves Collins Aerospace’s Evs System One Step Closer To Military And Firefighting Applications Collins Aerospace successfully completed a test flight proving the effectiveness of its Enhanced Vision System (EVS) on a C130J aircraft. EVS has, for many years, increased situational awareness on commercial and business aircraft. This latest milestone brings Collins closer to providing the same benefits to military customers across the globe. Collins’ EVS-3600 uses multiple wave-length cameras to “see-through” poor visibility conditions better than the human eye. Not only will it help them to navigate through heavy smoke and pinpoint hotspots while using C-130s to help stop wildfires, but they can also land and refuel closer to the fires to increase the efficiency of their efforts. Collins is currently working with Air Mobility Command on a longer, more comprehensive test of the EVS System and is on track to complete the prototype aircraft installation and airworthiness approval in 2023. The upgrade package is expected to be immediately available to the C-130J community thereafter. Plans $290m Factory Investment Amid Increasing Can Demand Ball Corp. will build an aluminum can factory outside Las Vegas, investing nearly $290 million there over several years and adding to a string of new plants it’s developing to meet demand. The Westminster-based company (NYS: BLL) announced it expects production to start at the North Las Vegas factory in late 2022. The site will create nearly 180 manufacturing jobs when fully operational, Ball said. “The new plant is supported by numerous long-duration contracts for committed volume with our strategic global partners and regional customers and will enable us to serve customer and consumer needs for more sustainable aluminum beverage packaging,” said Kathleen Pitre, Ball’s president of beverage packaging for North and Central America, in a statement. The plant will make a variety of can sizes for different of beverage customers, the company said. The announcement comes barely two months after Ball revealed it’s building an 800,000-squarefoot beverage can factory in North Carolina, a $383.8 million investment for a factory expected to open by the end of 2025. Aluminum beverage can popularity has grown thanks to canned alcohol drinks like hard ciders and craft beer, and because other makers of beverages, such as water, have been moving away from single-use plastics for environmental reasons. Ball has projected aluminum can growth could require as much as 45 billion cans of added annual production capacity worldwide by 2025. It added capacity in Glendale, Arizona; it is building a new plant in Pittston, Pennsylvania, this year; and next year Ball is slated to open a new can top factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman invest in space company relocating to Colorado

A space startup moving its headquarters to the Denver area has landed financial backing from two of the industry’s biggest names, including the area’s biggest aerospace employer.

The company’s 21,000-employee Lockheed Martin Space division, which makes satellites and spacecraft and related technologies, is headquartered in Jefferson County at a campus where more than 8,300 people are based.

Orbit Fab Inc. closed a $10 million financing round that was led by Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Asymmetry Ventures, of San Francisco. Orbit Fab, currently based in San Francisco, bills itself as a company building technologies for a refueling service for satellites in orbit, which it likens to being a gas station in space. “Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin both see clear value in on-orbit refueling to create a bustling in-space economy,” said Jeremy Schiel, Orbit Fab co-founder, in a written statement. “It’s great to see two aerospace and defense leaders embracing this technology. Their investment will help drive the adoption of our on-orbit refueling services and allow us to support the growing satellite servicing industry.” The affordable servicing of satellites in orbit — refueling, repairing and repositioning them — is a sort of holy grail of the space industry. Satellites are costly to build and to launch. Many satellites could continue working long past when they’ve run out of fuel to maintain their orbital position. Bridgerland Technical College, Utah Gene Haas Foundation dignitaries were welcomed to Bridgerland Technical College this past May to commemorate the donation of a $250,000 grant utilized in remodeling the Machining Technology department, classrooms, and laboratory. Wes Chambers, Department Head of the Machining Technology program, commented, “Thanks to the generous grant from the Gene Haas Foundation, we were able to update the lab to make it function more like the local machine shops, which really elevates the hands-on training the students get to enjoy in this program.” Vance Briggs, High School Instructor for the Machining Technology program, said, “What I’m most excited about has been the expansion of the classroom. We have increased our class space and the computers by 50%, which I am excited about. Central New Mexico Community College, New Mexico In August, 10 hard-working students in CNM’s Machine Tool Technology program were awarded the Gene Haas Scholarship. The Gene Haas Scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled in a machine program and who have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Winners each get $1,650.

Community College of Denver Celebrates Their Check

The CNM students received their scholarships during a small ceremony where they got to meet with Danny White who has worked with Haas for 27 years. “If it weren’t for Danny, we wouldn’t know about the scholarship and therefore, wouldn’t have it. We’re very appreciative,” says Marcel Hesch, an instructor in CNM’s Machine Tool program. Many of the students have exciting futures in front of them. Lucas Varela, one of the scholarship winners, is starting an apprenticeship at Sandia Labs and credits both CNM and faculty member Marcel Hersch for his success.

Front Range Community College, Colorado Students will get more h e l p p ay i n g f o r t h e i r manufacturing education and training—on their way to careers in a booming industry. The Gene Haas Foundation has awarded Front Range Community College $17,500 in grants to support student scholarships and other program needs at the college’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing. In June, Chad Wadsworth of MMT Productivity — the local Haas Factory Outlet in Denver — presented a check to FRCC faculty member George Deeb and his students. The Gene Haas Foundation has been providing funding for FRCC’s manufacturing scholarships since 2015. The total amount awarded to the college to date is now $118,500. The scholarship funds will help students pay for their classes at FRCC, preparing them to move into jobs in the manufacturing industry. The money will boost the college’s program in precision machining, and will also support the manufacturing industry in Colorado.

Slower development of the Dream Chaser has pushed back its first flight by about two years from the original plan. The company has restructured to quicken its metabolism, and it’s determined to make its launch deadline, Kavandi said. NASA contracted the Dream Chaser to fly six crewless missions delivering cargo to the ISS, and earlier this year added a seventh. Once Dream Chaser is successfully flying to the ISS, Sierra Space plans to complete a crew version of Dream Chaser able to ferry people into orbit, which is key to Sierra Space’s goal of building its own commercial space station by 2028 and offering research space in orbit and tourism stays. The Dream Chaser spaceplane is designed to be launched atop a rocket but fly back to land on a runway, like a smaller and fully autonomous version of NASA’s space shuttles. Sierra Space sees making its space station a tourist destination as well as a research outpost, predicting tourist visits there will have a powerful impact on people, one that’s bigger than the brief trips to the edge of space that Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin or Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic offer. Kavandi spent 33 days in orbit across three Space Shuttle missions for NASA in the late 1990s and early 2000s, one of which helped build the ISS, another mapped the planet, and the third included a stay on Russia’s Mir space station. What Will It Take For Electric Vehicles To Create Jobs, Not Cut Them?

The report, released Wednesday by the Economic Policy Institute, concluded that it would take government subsidies focused on developing a domestic supply chain and increasing demand for U.S.-made vehicles to avoid job losses. It found that without additional government investment, the industry could lose about 75,000 jobs by 2030, the year by which Biden wants half the new vehicles sold in the country to be electric. By contrast, the report said, if government subsidies were targeted to increase the portion of electric vehicle components that are manufactured domestically, and to increase the market share of U.S.-made vehicles, the industry could add about 150,000 jobs by the end of the decade. “That’s the payoff — making the sector a center of good jobs again,” said Josh Bivens, an economist who is one of the report’s authors. “If we don’t try to react proactively with good policy we’ll see continued downward pressure on the number of good jobs.” Looming over the transition to electric vehicles is the fact that they have substantially fewer moving parts than gasoline-powered ones and require less labor to manufacture — about 30% less, according to figures from Ford Motor. The vehicle-manufacturing industry employs a little under 1 million people domestically, including suppliers. There are essentially two ways to offset the projected job losses: to increase the proportion of each vehicle’s parts that are made domestically — specifically in the powertrain, the key parts and systems that power a car — and to sell more vehicles assembled in the United States. Bivens and his co-author, James Barrett, an economic consultant, examine the effects of doing both. They note that roughly three-quarters of the parts in the powertrain for a U.S.-made gasoline vehicle are produced domestically, versus less than half of the parts in the powertrain of a U.S.made electric vehicle.

When President Joe Biden announced his multitrillion-dollar jobs plan in March, it included nearly $175 billion in spending to encourage Americans to buy electric vehicles. The money would help ensure “that these vehicles are affordable for all families and manufactured by workers with good jobs,” the White House wrote at the time. Raytheon Buys Fast-Growing Colorado Space Company Raytheon is buying a homegrown Denver-area aerospace company for the second time in a year as the defense giant bulks up its satellite manufacturing capabilities. The Waltham, Massachusetts-based company reached a deal to buy Centennial-based SEAKR Engineering, a fast-growing maker of advanced satellite electronics and computing systems, and make it a wholly owned subsidiary. SEAKR Engineering is a 540-employee business that has been family owned since its founding in 1981. It was formed by retired Air Force Col. Ray Anderson, a veteran of

military space surveillance programs who launched the 4/6/2020 2:04:17 PM company with his three sons and today is SEAKR’s chairman. The name SEAKR is an acronym using the Anderson family members’ first initials. Apprenticeships and Workforce Development Programs Are Having a Moment The manufacturing skills gap has been a topic of discussion for several years. According to a 2021 Deloitte study, it is estimated that by 2030, there will be 2.1 million manufacturing jobs that will need to be filled. Finding employees who are trained, skilled workers is becoming more critical in a post-pandemic world, and meeting this demand is requiring manufacturers to begin thinking outside the box when it comes to future labor force planning. As technology in the manufacturing industry continues to move forward, and career manufacturers begin to retire out, it is also becoming apparent that the skills required for success are growing more complex. Manufacturers that have participated in apprenticeship programs are taking control of the skills gap and labor deficit while also setting themselves up for success in the future. Although newer to America, apprenticeships have been an integral part of the world’s economic landscape for years. In fact, a 2016 U.S. News and World Report article reported that America is beginning to look at the benefits of incorporating an apprenticeship system similar to that of Europe. Apprenticeships offer benefits for both employers and students. For manufacturing companies, apprenticeship programs provide a way to address the impending skills gap while mitigating the current labor shortage. Employees who go through an apprenticeship program tend to be more loyal and are often able to adapt to change and perform tasks more quickly than those not hired from within the company. Ninety-one percent of apprentices stay at the job where they received training, and employers receive an average of $1.47 back in increased productivity for every dollar spent on apprenticeship. Additionally, companies that offer apprenticeships can train employees to operate within their facility’s culture and environment from the onset of the professional relationship. Finally, apprenticeship programs can benefit the entire industry by changing misconceptions that manufacturing lacks career paths and employees work in dark, dirty, and dangerous facilities. and education. Partnering with a local MEP will help organize a thriving apprenticeship program. The centers can help manufacturers analyze their labor and skill needs, and compare them with available training programs in their area. This analysis determines things such as the type of training program needed and the length of training time required for the apprentice. From there, the company can connect with a local educational facility (high school or college) to coordinate the apprenticeship and what certification the apprentice will receive when their training is completed. Once this is established and relationships are formed, qualified apprentices will be available to fill your job openings and fulfill your future growth goals. Skills gap and labor market future Because apprenticeships are not the first options presented to individuals preparing to enter the workforce, it will take success stories to change the narrative. Parents, teachers, and career counselors usually encourage a college degree because that was historically the best route for a financially successful future. Manufacturers can provide a viable alternative. 5 Things New CNC Operators Must Know Shops are hiring CNC machine operators that show aptitude versus experience. Despite this, there are five fundamental building blogs that be understood before true training can begin. Today’s manufacturing companies find it nearly impossible to find and hire qualified CNC machinists. Indeed, most find it difficult to find people that have any shop experience at all. Instead, they must hire people who simply show an interest in and (hopefully) have aptitude for manufacturing – and train them from scratch. What should new CNC machinists know? There are five subjects that would-be CNC machinists must understand before they can spend meaningful time on a specific CNC machine tool. 1. Shop safety - First and foremost, newcomers to manufacturing must understand that the shop floor is a dangerous place. You must convey general concerns in two areas: safety equipment that workers use and safety practices to which they must adhere. Also include any unique safety issues with which your company contends. 2. Shop math - You must ensure that newcomers can use a calculator to add, subtract, multiply and divide. CNC operators must be able to repeatedly perform simple calculations without making any mistakes. 3. Blueprint reading - Anyone working with CNC machines must be able to interpret a 3D workpiece from a series of 2D views on an engineering drawing. This involves understanding line types (visible, hidden, center, section, etc.) and orthographic projection. Fortunately, CNC operators will have a finished workpiece (machined during setup) for reference and comparison. Operators must also be able to interpret dimensions to judge the size of each workpiece attribute. 4. Tolerance interpretation - Newcomers must understand that every workpiece attribute has an amount of allowable error, whether it be specified or implied. The kind of tolerance that is of most concern to CNC operators is the dimensional tolerance. Attributes with type of tolerance can be easily adjusted. Point out that dimensional tolerances can be specified in three ways: 1) plus or minus a value, 2) high and low limit and 3) plus one value and minus another. Concentrate on the methods used in your company. Be sure your new CNC operators must also know the value you expect them to target when adjustments are required, which is often the mean value. Test arithmetic skills by providing a lot of examples and practice. Ask your new CNC operators to determine whether a measured attribute is within the tolerance band. If it is not, ask them to determine the amount and polarity of the required adjustment.Newcomers should also be exposed to geometric tolerances, but let them know that workpiece attributes with these tolerances are not as easily manipulated as those with dimensional tolerances. 5. Measuring devices - Explain the two basic types: fixed and variable gages. Go into detail for any fixed gages your CNC operators use, including go/no-go gages and gages that incorporate a dial indicator. If your company incorporates different types dial indicators in your fixed gages, be sure to explain the increment value for the dial (0.001, 0.0005, 0.0001 inch, etc.). Be sure people understand the variable gages they will be using. Most common are micrometers and calipers, but again, make sure you include any others your company uses. Most gages, and especially variable gages, require practice to master. In addition, there is a certain feel, bordering on intuition, that is required to ensure good readings. Be sure to provide a lot of practice.

With these five topics understood, newcomers will be able to take measurements and determine whether the measured attribute is within its tolerance band. If it is not, they will be able to determine whether the workpiece can still be saved by removing more material. They also will be able to determine the adjustment amount (value and polarity) that will bring the workpiece attribute back to its target value.
