“The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful then a thousand heads bowing in prayer.” - Mahatma Gandhi We are preparing for what many (myself included) believe is the most magical time of the year. It doesn’t matter whether we are celebrating Christmas, Chanukah, or another religious occasion. If we have children in our lives, the whole month of December centers on celebrations, gift giving, decorating, delicious food, and family traditions. It is also a time of year to give back to others less fortunate. According to the Blackbaud Index of Nonprofit organizations, charitable entities saw an increase in charitable giving this fall, marking an increasingly prosperous economy and setting the stage for an especially profitable holiday season. 34 percent of all charitable giving is done in the last three months of the year, according to Steve MacLauglin, director at Blackbaud. Of those donations, about 18 percent are given in December alone. It seems that people are inspired by the holiday season and want to give back. “As the economy has recovered, people tend to give more,” Sam Worthington, CEO of InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.- based nongovernmental international organizations, said. “We also are more aware of the challenges others face. As Americans feel better off and yet recognize that others are in need, they tend to dig deeper into their pockets and help.” In an interesting twist, the Blackbaud survey found that young men between the ages of 18 and 34 were the demographic most likely to increase the amount of their donations in the wake of global crises.“We see Millennials as the generation that’s most selfish and entitled,” MacLaughlin said. “But according to the survey, they’re the ones who may have the most charitable hearts.” So you want to find some worthwhile charities to donate to? According to Charity sites such as Charity Navigator, if a nonprofit spends more than 1/3 of its total budget on overhead, it is simply not meeting its mission. If you are looking to donate to charitable funds that are most successful in putting your donations to work, visit charitynavigator.com. But to give you some perspective, American Red Cross keeps their administrative expenses below 5% and more than 92% of their income goes to actual programs. Other charities considered successful in their distribution of donations to actual programs include World Vision (85% of donations go to stamp out poverty around the world), and Doctors Without Borders (more than 86% goes go to healing others throughout the world). It is also worthwhile to point out publicly held companies that were most generous in their cash donations in 2013, as a percentage of their pretax profits. Here they are by ranking: 1. Wal-Mart, 2. Wells Fargo, 3. Chevron, 4. Goldman Sachs, 5. Exxon Mobil, 6. JP Morgan Chase, 7. Bank of America, 8. Johnson & Johnson, 9. General Electric, 10. Target Wow, it is indeed interesting that not one Technology company is on the Top 10 list. In closing, enjoy your magical holidays, and may we all feel led to give back to others in need. Until next year, I wish you a fabulous holiday, and God Bless our Troops.

Brian knew he was in the right place when he found a well-established custom manufacturing shop that enjoys pushing the limits.
CWJ’s greatest strengths, Brian says, “Are our dedication to providing excellent customer service, our versatility, and the capacity to turn jobs quickly. These three keys are what makes CWJ a great partner for our customers and a great place to work for our employees.” He continued, “We have three machines that allow us to take on any and all jobs, including quick-turn projects. We have the ability to add a second shift, as needed, to meet customer needs and timelines.” CWJ’s staff experience is critical because of the attention to detail that their customers’ projects require. One thing Brian did to ensure that focus on customer service continues was to elevate Josh Van Maren’s role to Customer Service Manager. Josh is now in charge of coordinating the capacity available on our three machines, from expediting quickturn projects which can be delivered within an hour, to scheduling large runs requiring weeks of cutting, and everything in between. As a proud member of RMTMA, NOMMA and CAMA, Brian and the entire CWJ staff are always working to learn new ways to push water jet cutting forward and better serve our customers. As part of a week-long series of events focused on manufacturing in Colorado, Qualtek Manufacturing hosted Manufacturing Day at its Colorado Springs facility. The purpose of the event was to build interest in the manufacturing sector, workforce development, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. More than 38 representatives of industry and education throughout Colorado energetically participated in tours and roundtable discussions. To grow the manufacturing sector in Colorado we must be able to employ workers with relevant education and training. Manufacturing Day participants noted that in today’s culture children are comfortable with using technical tools but do not have experience with physically making those tools. Through a collaborative effort with the Colorado Helps Advanced Manufacturing Program (CHAMP), Community Colleges in Colorado are increasing the number of manufacturing degrees and certificates available to supply trained workers needed by local manufacturers. Qualtek Manufacturing recently enrolled a Maintenance Technician in the Pueblo Community College Maintenance Engineering apprenticeship program. Manufacturers like Qualtek depend on regional and industry alliances to maintain their success. The Colorado Springs Regional Business Alliance recently formed the Southern Colorado Manufacturing Partnership.Another organization is Manufacturer’s edge (formerly CAMT). Defense Industry Sees Boost By GlobalThreats Missile defense, intelligence systems and other products will get a boost from rising global threats, experts say, as conflicts drive the Pentagon to look for technological advances, says Bloomberg Government Senior Defense Analyst Kevin Brancato. It’s not just current conflicts with groups such as Islamic State, he notes. Instead, Brancato says, it’s “these much broader threats where defense contractors play a key role in supporting the U.S. military.” Bloomberg

R&D Magazine reports that newly developed plastic materials that can conduct electricity called “radical polymers” could “bring lowcost, transparent solar cells, flexible and lightweight batteries, and ultrathin antistatic coatings for consumer electronics and aircraft.” The article notes that researchers have identified “the solid-state electrical properties of one such polymer, called PTMA,” and quotes Purdue University chemical engineering professor Bryan Boudouris saying, “It’s a polymer glass that conducts charge, which seems like a contradiction because glasses are usually insulators.

Consultant: General Aviation Poised To Recover
Why Contact Faustson Tool?
The fortunes of general aviation are expected to noticeably improve next year, Brian Foley, an aviation consultant with Brian Foley Associates, said.
• We are a leader in 5 Axis Manufacturing Technology, Technology including 5 Axis Milling and 5 Axis EDM. • We have 30 Years of Experience Servicing Customers. Fauston Tool is a Woman Owned Small Business. • Our customers span the Aerospace, Defense, Medical, Semi-Conductor, Energy and Aeronautic industries.
“I have a deep conviction that 2015 will be the indisputable pivot point when the industry, including its laggard segments, turns meaningfully upward,” Foley said.
• Our certifications include: ISO 9001:2000, JPL Flight Certified, Ball Flight Certified, MPC Flight Certified, LASP Flight Certified, ITAR Certified Ball Aerospace: First ever delegated supplier
For the past seven years, the market has had a split personality with deliveries of the largest business jets relatively unscathed by the recession, Foley noted. Sales of small and medium-size jets dropped by two-thirds and have yet to fully recover.

The 2009 downturn in the economy resulted in a nosedive in the general aviation industry.Wichita planemakers cut thousands of jobs as backlogs collapsed.
“After many fits and starts, there are several key elements falling into place that suggest ... that a measurable improvement is imminent across the board,” Foley wrote. First, used business jet inventories are at their lowest levels since 2008; takeoff and landing activity is the busiest it’s been in six years; and business jet executives have been more upbeat lately, Foley said. The U.S. has always been the largest market for private aircraft. It’s five times the size of the next largest market, he said. Foley also said the U.S. economic situation has continued to improve, and stock market indexes have hit records. That’s helped consumer confidence ratings reach a seven-year high, he said. “Add to that the lowest oil prices in four years, which reduces plane operating costs, and historically low interest rates from which aircraft loan and lease rates are derived, and you’ve painted a great scenario for an all-encompassing rebound,” he said in a statement. In addition, a number of new jet models have been introduced. New products stimulate the market by giving customers a reason to buy. From 2014 to 2019, 18 new and derivative business jets are entering the market, he said. Foley expects deliveries to be on the upswing until 2019.That’s when Foley expects the next cyclical downturn to occur.

“The industry’s improved outlook will manifest itself next year as markedly higher manufacturer backlogs, increasing book-to-bill ratios and a jump in unit deliveries in double-digit percentages,” Foley said.
Low-Cost Solar Panel Captures 4X More Energy Focused Sun of Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA is planning to shake up the solar industry with an inexpensive module that captures four times more energy than a conventional solar panel of the same size. The module, called FourFold, produces both electricity and hot water. It can pay for itself in as little as two years, bringing local jobs plus cheap, clean energy. For every dollar spent, you capture four fold more solar energy. A FourFold covers most of modern energy needs: its electricity powers lights, refrigerators and air cooling, while its heat can warm a home or drive boilers. In the developing world, the module is needed in village clinics where it can sterilize water and refrigerate vaccines. The fabrication technology to make FourFold solar modules in small local factories can be licensed from Focused Sun. A town as small as 5,000 can support a solar factory. These aren’t short term jobs: most towns and small cities will take decades to solarize. Costs of the module’s collector are similar to a same-sized conventional PV panel because sandwich fabrication is used for the module’s mirrors. Sandwich fabrication is the most efficient structure for resisting the wind, the highest force a solar panel must withstand.

Conventional PV solar panels capture 20% of the sun’s energy as electricity. In the FourFold module, four mirrors concentrate the sunlight into a narrow strip of overhead PV cells, capturing just as much electricity. More important, coolant pumped through the absorber captures an additional 55% of the sun’s energy as heat. Altogether, the FourFold collects 75% of the sun’s energy, 500 W of electricity and 1500 W of heat for 2000 W total. The attached shed stores energy overnight: heat in an insulated tank and electricity in batteries. With low costs and high efficiency solar capture, payback can be as low as 2 years.

US Machine Tools Orders Up 77.3% in September
DOD’s 5-year budget will ignore spending caps
The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) reports a surge of U.S. machine tool orders in September 2014. The data is drawn from the latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders Report -- a monthly summary of actual data prepared by AMT.
A Pentagon budget prepared for fiscal 2016 through 2020 won’t take into account sequestration cuts to defense, says the Defense Department comptroller, and Pentagon officials continue to push lawmakers to end the across-the-board budget cuts for good. The Pentagon estimates sequestration will cut $31 billion a year from the defense budget through 2021, but the Congressional Budget Office puts
U.S. manufacturers and machine shops ordered $647.63 million worth of new machining and cutting equipment, a rise of 77.3% over the $365.18 million recorded for August, and 61.4% over the total of $401.18 million reported for September 2013. A2Z METALWORKER

The Todd Machinery Team In Front of Machines Ready To Ship To Customers • 26 •
A2Z METALWORKER
Nov / Dec 2014
Your #1 Source For Machine Tool Servicing Throughout The Rocky Mountain Region. Did I Mention They Also Sell Machine Tools? Todd Machinery, Inc. is a well-known company in Utah, and it has been in business for more than 6 decades. The company built its reputation not only by providing quality Todd Machinery’s Sales Team machine tools to its customers, but also for its expertise in rebuilding and retrofitting machine tools, no matter what their age or brand. And when you hear people talk aboutTodd Machinery, the words ‘ethical’ and ‘integrity’ are commonly used. Just last year, David Mann purchasedTodd Machinery, Inc. If you haven’t worked with Todd Machinery since David took over nearly 2 years ago, I encourage you to find out more about the ‘New Todd Machinery’. To use a cliché from an ad that ran a few years ago, “This isn’t your father’s Chevrolet.” There are so many positive changes you can see when you meet with the Todd Machinery team, too many to describe in an article. But the most noteworthy changes are outlined below:
√ The Todd Machinery team has expanded geographically. Todd Machinery has long served customers in Utah, Idaho and Montana. Today, they have expanded their presence in the Rocky Mountain region, with a team dedicated to serving customers in Colorado. √ The Todd Machinery team has grown dramatically. The staff numbers 15 today, up 30% from pre-David Mann ownership. You can learn a little about all the staff members (with the exception of their newest hire) in the ‘Meet The Todd Team’ section of the article. The Todd Machinery team all say they don’t know of another machine tool dealer with such a large and experienced team. And everyone you see in the ‘Meet The Todd Todd Machinery’s UT Service Team Team’ is a dedicated employee of the company, with their only objective to serve Todd Machinery’s customers. It is no coincidence that nearly 70% of theTodd Machinery team members are focused on service. √ The Todd Machinery team carries more machine tool lines than ever before. Just this past year, Todd Machinery successfully negotiated 3 new machine tool lines for their customers. They added
The Todd Machinery Team the Hurco machine tool line, because, as David says, “They have some of the best controls in the world.”They also addedWaterjet USA to their product portfolio. David Soares, Todd Machinery Sales Manager, says, “To our knowledge, we are the only machine tool dealer in all of Utah that carries a waterjet line locally. With the other waterjet companies, someone flies in to sell and service the product.” The company also added Global Specialty Machines to their product mix. David says, “We have long offered EDM consumables to our customers locally, and now we have expanded our EDM capabilities with Todd Machinery’s CO Service Team EDM machine tools.”
√ Safety is a #1 priority at Todd Machinery. David believes that safety should be a number one priority in any company. While Todd Machinery always operated with safety in mind, today, the entire Todd Machinery team attends certified safety training programs. David says, “We value every one of our team members, and we want to take every step possible to ensure that they perform their jobs in a safe environment. That way, they are available and healthy for our customers.” √ The Todd Machinery team subscribes to continuous internal training and the best technology tools. Under David’s leadership, every team member increased its training hours over the past 2 years. Sales engineers, now equipped with tablets and smart phones to better serve their customers, all attended IMTS to learn about some of the newest technology on the market. ServiceTechnicians and Engineers are flown throughout the United States to attend the latest technical training on the machines Todd Machinery supports. √ The Todd Machinery team raised the bar on financial prudence. Customers want to purchase their machine tools from a company that they know is financially sound, one that they can expect to be in busiA2Z METALWORKER

ness many years from now. Under David’s leadership, the company went from utilizing accounting services on a contract basis to employing a full time Chief Financial Officer (CFO). With Torann Bender’s financial expertise, the company has improved A Recent Toyoda Installation its D&B Credit Rating and PAYDEX® scores. Torann says that the company just achieved the highest PAYDEX® score awarded. With financial prudence as a key objective, the company has seen year over year revenue growth of nearly 50%.
√ Todd Machinery moved its Utah Headquarters. Todd Machinery recently moved to a better location, now at 2061 West 2300 South, still in Salt Lake City. The new more efficient headquarters enabled the team to open a Denver office to expand into Colorado. It is yet another example ofTodd’s financial prudence and growth strategy. √ Some things were just always so great about Todd Machinery that they were left alone. David says, “Todd Machinery is renown for its sales and service of new and used machine tools. We also built a reputation for our ability to A Recent Hyundai Installation rebuild and retrofit existing machine tools. This is something you just can’t get from any machine tool dealer, so we left this in place. The only thing we did change was that we made Matt Hatch Vice President and part owner of the company, since Matt was instrumental in building our superior service capabilities.” Todd Machinery is so respected for their service capabilities across all machine tool lines, not just theirs, that it is not uncommon for them to be contacted by other dealers in this territory to support servicing the dealer’s machines. Recently, they were even called on by one of their machine tool builders to support a customer in a different geography, since the dealer in that geography wasn’t equipped to provide the support. Todd Machinery has always carried a superior line of machine tools. Matt says, “We have the Toyoda line, and I believe they make the best cylindrical grinders in the world.” He continued, “Hermle offers a superior 5 axis German manufactured machine. When you need high-end precision, the Hermle line is it. Sales Manager David added, “Takamatsu Machinery offers automation as a standard in a small lathe, and many of our customers value this capability.” He continued, “We are one of the longest running Giddings & Lewis distributors in the United States. Today we can sell the Fives Giddings & Lewis line of Vertical Turning Centers (VTC), which have the capacity, power and accuracy to handle the most demanding machining requirements. The optional multi-functional capabilities add flexibility and reduce setups and cycle times.” A2Z METALWORKER

Hear What Customers Have to Say About Todd Machinery. “When I first opened for business a few years ago, I didn’t have the credit to buy a new machine. I had to buy a used machine, and it never worked from the start. I called in Todd Machinery and though it wasn’t a machine they sold me, nor was it even a machine tool line they carry, they got the machine up and running for me. Since then, I always buy new machines and I buy them from Todd Machinery. I bought my second Hyundai lathe from them just recently. My first Hyundai lathe is 3 years old now, and I have never had a problem with it. I use Todd Machinery to service all my machine tools. 97% of the time, when I call them, they are here immediately. They are outstanding at service, and I am happy with the machines I buy from them.” Machine Shop Owner in SLC “I am a new machine shop owner in Ogden, UT, though I have more than a decade of experience in the industry. When I wanted to purchase a vertical mill, I did quite a bit of research on the best machine for my business. Hurco came up #1, especially because of their conversational programming. They are an excellent value, and they are very intuitive. I contacted Hurco once I knew this was the right machine for me.They put me in touch withTodd Machinery, the Utah Hurco dealer. I worked with David Soares. It is a little odd, but I immediately felt so comfortable with David that I didn’t look anywhere else for a new machine. David and the Todd Machinery team took such great care of me that unless they make some drastic changes, I will continue to buy from David, Hurco and Todd Machinery. On top of this, with the Hurco purchase, we are offered 3 days of training. After 1 day, we knew the machine so well I don’t know if we will use the additional training. ” Machine Shop Owner in Ogden, UT “Our shop has about a dozen lathes, Our Fryer, purchased from Todd Machinery, is our latest. We purchased the Fryer machine primarily because we had some expensive tooling that we wanted to re-use, and the Fryer was completely compatible with it. We hadn’t worked withTodd Machinery in the past, and our experience has been very good. The installation went well, and when there were some features we didn’t pay for but that we wanted, Todd Machinery came out and did the upgrade for us. I was not only delighted with this service, but I have to say they are as good as the best of our machine dealers.” Machine Shop Owner in Colorado Springs, CO

Seaborne Death Lasers Being Tested By Navy Popular Mechanics reports “the Navy just completed an operational demo of a new ship-based Laser Weapon System (LaWS) in the Persian Gulf ” which is “meant to take out enemy drones or attack boats that might swarm a large vessel.” The system “already aced maritime tests in 2011 and 2012, but the Navy wanted to see how it would perform at sea under the kind of harsh conditions it could encounter in battle.” Unlike past lasers, “the new solid-state lasers are smaller, run on electricity, and cost only about $1 per shot.” The Navy hopes to have the system combat-ready by 2016.
Boeing Plans To Develop New Airplane To Replace 737 Max By 2030 Boeing Co has sketched out plans to develop an all-new aircraft, with new engines and likely a composite structure, to replace its 737 MAX jetliner by 2030, Chief Executive Officer Jim McNerney said. The airplane will be slightly larger than the 737 but its shape won’t change dramatically from the current fuselage. The push for the new aircraft was being driven by competition from China and elsewhere, he said at an innovation summit. “By 2030 we will have a new airplane,” he said, adding there’s “a good chance it will be a composite airplane. It will be slightly bigger, there will be new engines. The current look of the planes (shape) won’t change dramatically,” he continued. Chinese planemaker COMAC is developing the C919 jet to compete

with the 737 and the Airbus A320.The jet has been delayed until end-2015. Other competitors include Russia’s MS21 and the slightly smaller Bombardier CSeries from Canada. McNerney said an all-new 737 MAX replacement was needed “because the new entrants would do something like MAX.”
ORLANDO - PHOENIX - CHICAGO - HOUSTON
Boeing has nearly 100 years of aircraft experience and “we cannot give up that advantage because competing on costs alone would be difficult,” he said. “Innovation is the only answer, there’s no easy way around.” Boeing had considered designing a completely new “clean-sheet” design as a successor to the 737 at the start of the decade but abandoned the plan and came up with a revamped version of the 737 known as the MAX after Airbus scored market success with an upgraded version of its own A320. Having invested in an upgrade capable of providing around 15 percent fuel savings thanks to new engines, both companies had previously indicated they would not aim for a complete redesign before 2030.

Boeing is preparing to deliver the 737 MAX, its next iteration of the stalwart single-aisle 737 jetliner it introduced in 1968.The 737 MAX is a “renovation” of the current 737, with new engines and aerodynamic changes that provide up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency. But the jet is not an all-new aircraft, and the company now envisions succeeding it in 2030.
Boeing’s chief executive has said the company wants to avoid “moon shots” - longrange product developments that take decades to come to market. Instead, Boeing wants to innovate frequently and harvest existing technology in new aircraft, much like tech companies do. By referring to a composite 737 structure, McNerney suggests the successor plane will draw from the composite-built 787 Dreamliner, Boeing’s latest all-new aircraft. Boeing and Airbus are battling for market share in the crucial single-aisle segment, which will account for nearly 70 percent of new aircraft deliveries worth some $2.5 trillion over the next 20 years, according to Boeing’s estimates. Boeing’s 737 MAX competes with the Airbus A320neo family, which was launched about 8 months before the 737 MAX and so far has captured about 60 percent of sales.
The A320neo is due to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2015, compared with 2017 for the 737 MAX.
DOD: $1.3B Sikorsky Helicopter Deal To Go Forward The Army and Navy will proceed with a $1.3 billion deal to buy Sikorsky helicopters, the Defense Department said, a deal that comes as a reversal of the Navy’s plan to cancel its part of the contract. The Army will buy 41 Black Hawk and 24 medicalevacuation helicopters while the Navy will purchase 29 Seahawks and eight MH-60S helicopters. Source: Defense News A2Z METALWORKER

Parabolic Flight Research May Improve Spacesuit Design The Science Magazine “Science Shot” website reported that research conducted on parabolic flights aboard “NASA’s adapted DC-9 aircraft” showed that at the reduced gravity levels of the moon, people transition from walking to running at an average speed of 1.42 meters per second. According to the article, the transition speed in lunar gravity was higher than previously theorized, which could result in the development of “more agile space suits.”
Equipment Leasing and Finance Industry Confidence at Six-Month High The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the November 2014 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI). Designed to collect leadership data, the index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $903 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 64.2, an increase from the October index of 60.4 and the highest level since May. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Valerie Hayes Jester, President, Brandywine Capital Associates, Inc., said, “The mid-term elections are now over and consumer confidence seems to be improving as gas prices and A2Z METALWORKER

unemployment statistics continue to decrease. We have experienced an increase in demand for capital equipment purchases and, more importantly, financing for those orders. Another important note is that the equipment being requisitioned appears to be associated with business expansion and not just replacement of older assets.” November 2014 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 64.2, an increase from the October index of 60.4. • When asked to assess their business conditions over the next four months, 27.3% of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve over the next four months, up from 23% in October. • 30.3% of survey respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures (capex) will increase over the next four months, up from 25.7% in October. • 21.2% of executives expect more access to capital to fund equipment acquisitions over the next four months, up from 11.4% in October. • When asked, 45.4% of the executives reported they expect to hire more employees over the next four months, an increase from 40% in October. • 3% of the leadership evaluate the current U.S. economy as “excellent,” unchanged from last month. 97% of the leadership evaluate the current U.S. economy as “fair,” up from 94.3% in October. None rate it as “poor,” down from 3% the previous month. .

Boeing Airplanes Chief Says Considering 52 737S A Month By 2018 Boeing Co appears increasingly likely to boost production of its top-selling 737 jetliners to 52 a month starting in 2018 after the head of its commercial airplanes business spoke about that possibility last month. “Our focus today would be around a 52-a-month rate in (737 production) somewhere in that 2018 time frame,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes Chief Executive Officer Ray Conner told an investor conference held by Morgan Stanley. “Now, I can tell you that the demand is there for those airplanes, significant demand. So I’m not uncomfortable with the timing or with rate,” he said. The remarks, among the most explicit by Boeing so far, further cement the widely held view that the Chicago-based company is close to announcing another firm planned rate increase for the narrow-body 737. The company currently makes 42 737s a month and has set firm plans to lift the rate to 47 a month in 2017.

Last month, Conner said he sees “incredible pressure” to increase the 737 production rate beyond current targets. Boeing President and Chief Operating Officer Dennis Muilenburg said the company “had taken a serious look” at raising rates, speaking during Reuters Aerospace and Defense Summit, but he declined to say whether a decision had been made.

Airbus Group SA (AIR.PA) also is studying raising output of its best-selling A320-family aircraft beyond the record level of 46 jets a month already targeted for 2016. A decision could come by yearend, Airbus Americas President Barry Eccleston told the Reuters Aerospace and Defense Summit.

Both companies have thousands of orders for the agile, fuel-efficient planes, which are immensely popular with low-cost airlines. In Boeing’s case, its backlog of 4,008 737 orders represents nearly eight years of production at current rates, meaning airlines must wait to get planes they order today. By increasing production rates, Boeing and Airbus create earlier delivery slots that they can sell to customers.Source: Reuters

National Association of Manufacturers Chief Economist Chad Moutray said, “Manufacturing value-added increased 1.9% in the second quarter, up $2.045 trillion in the first quarter to $2.085 trillion. On a yearover-year basis, manufacturing value-added rose 4.4%. This suggests that the sector has experienced decent growth in output over the past 12 months. Utilities Embracing Green Businesses Politico reports that “once-stodgy electric utilities” are now “moving into new green businesses that they have long shunned, hawking solar power and products like super-efficient light bulbs to get a piece of the action in the clean energy boom.” It is a “new strategy that comes as slowing growth in electricity consumption threatens their profits and forces the utilities to rethink their long-held business models.” Brattle Group’s Peter Fox-Penner recently told a US Energy Association meeting, “It really is a once-in-a-century change to the industry. ... All of us consultants — we’re having a field day because this is the most challenging stuff we’ve ever seen in our careers. And it’s fascinating.” Power demand has risen steadily for decades “often in lock-step with the economy, providing utilities with a reliable increase in sales plus a profit that is typically set by state regulators. But the economic crash in the last decade has poked a hole in that business model.”

SME’s Ayers Says 3-D Printing Plays Limited But Important Role In Auto Industry The Automotive News reports on the use of 3-D printing in the automotive industry. The story quotes Kevin Ayers, manager of additive and 3-D printing for SME, saying, “Because of the price per part and the materials involved, it’s not just going to allow us to build 200,000 parts for one particular car model,” adding, “It’s cost-prohibitive, and that’s a barrier we’re never going to quite overcome.” Sill Ayers pointed out that the process “has greatly reduced the number of recalls needed to replace faulty mechanical parts,” and he said it encourages creativity in design, because “you can come up with seven or 12 different options to see what works the best.”
Lockheed, Pentagon Agree On Latest F-35 Production Lot The Pentagon’s latest handshake with F-35 prime contractor Lockheed Martin for the next batch of 43 of the single-engine, stealthy fighters comes as the program’s Joint Program Office (JPO) continues to slowly implement a fix to engines in its test fleet.
Announcements Low-rate, initial production (LRIP) lot 8 pricing will be released once the final contract details are firm, according to a statement from F-35 spokeswoman Kyra Hawn. The price for each of the three F-35 variants is roughly 3.6% less expensive than in LRIP 7; this should put the cost of an F-35A in LRIP 8 at about $93.3 million, an F-35B at $100.5 million and an F-35C at $111.1 million.

This lot includes the initial orders for the first two F-35 foreign military sales countries; Israel is slated to get two F-35As, and Japan its first four F-35As. The U.S. order is for 29 of the jets — 19 As for the Air Force, six Bs for the Marine Corps and four Cs for the Navy. Also included are two F-35As each for Norway and Italy, as well as four F-35Bs for the United Kingdom, Hawn says. This lot is for fiscal 2014 buys and deliveries should be complete by the end of fiscal 2016. The LRIP deal comes as the F-35 team plans for its first F-35C deployment on a carrier. The F-35C is slated to execute its first arrested landing on a carrier deck on the USS Nimitz on Nov. 3 off the coast of San Diego. Developmental testing is slated to last until Nov. 17, according to Navy officials. The F-35s to be used on the carrier will employ the newly redesigned tail hook made by Lockheed Martin. The original design was scrapped after it failed to snag the arresting wire repeatedly. Lorraine Martin, F-35 executive vice president for Lockheed Martin, says she intends to drop the price of the F-35A to $80 million in fiscal year 2019 as part of her goal to match or beat the price of any so-called fourth generation fighter — such as the Gripen or Super Hornet — that might be in production at that time and compete with the F-35. She has initiated a Blueprint for Affordability (BPA) to gather cost-saving initiatives throughout the program. Through the BPA, she intends to commit to pricing with the government based on the cost reductions anticipated by these initiatives. One example is a $342,000 investment made by Lockheed to shift from forging to using additive manufacturing to fabricate canopy bowframes for the F-35. That change is expected to save $31.5 million across the program. In another example, a new forging method for the rudder spar made by Kongsberg cost $360,200 in company funds, and should result in a total program savings of $204.8 million, Martin says. “We don’t get many like this. This is huge,” she said. The program office did not release contract terms addressing who would cover the cost of deficiencies discovered during flight testing for LRIP 8 aircraft. The LRIP 8 deal with Lockheed comes on the heels of the government’s announced agreement with engine prime manufacturer Pratt & Whitney for the LRIP 7 batch of F135 engines. The price of the 36 engines in that deal is $18.8 million, including the more expensive F-35B propulsion system used for short takeoff and vertical landings on that specialized variant. The total cost for LRIP 7 engines is about $943 million, the program office said.

A request for information issued this week for the Thunderstorm Technology Demonstration Program asks industry, academia and government R&D organizations for potential demonstration candidates in two areas: small to mid-size drones that can detect chemical or biological agents, and emerging technologies that could counter small, inexpensive drones carrying a chemical or biological weapon of mass destruction. The Thunderstorm program is a series of demonstrations sponsored by the deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Emerging Capability and Prototyping’s Rapid Reaction Technology Office (RRTO).The last Thunderstorm RFI, issued in November 2013, focused on countering WMD in the maritime pathways of the Southeastern United States. This one is more general, seeking kinetic and non-kinetic applications for both within and outside of the United States.

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has struck a deal to build instruments and assemble 18 satellites for a startup that aims to collect data from Earth’s entire surface daily. The Boulder-based aerospace contractor -- a unit of Broomfield-based Ball Corp. -- says it has reached a deal with Arlington, Virginia-based OmniEarth Inc., which plans to have its entire fleet of satellites — each the size of a dorm-room refrigerator — launched and deployed in orbit by 2018. “This is the type of thing we want to be involved in,” said Carl Gelderloos, director of business development for Ball Aerospace. “The kind of quality OmniEarth is looking for is right in our sweet spot.”

Ball Aerospace is known mainly for military and NASA government contracts. It’s excited to take the lead role in an ambitious commercial space project, Gelderloos said. Earlier this year, OmniEarth announced it was working with Harris Corp., Draper Laboratory and Dynetics on the satellite constellation, with Dynetics building the satellite bodies in Huntsville, Alabama. The partnership aimed to raise $250 million in funding for the project. OmniEarth CEO Lars Dyrud revealed his company is working with Ball Aerospace in an interview published Thursday by Forbes. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

Ball Aerospace has led or been involved with imaging technology and satellites including NASA’s Hubble telescope and Landsat-8 climate satellite, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s NPP storm-tracking satellite and orbiters used by Longmont-based imaging company DigitalGlobe Inc. OmniEarth’s business model is different from what DigitalGlobe does. Rather than collect high-resolution imagery, OmniEarth’s satellites aim to collect 16-foot-resolution scientific data. Each orbiter will gather 124-mile-wide swaths of information as they circle the planet, allowing the OmniEarth to assemble a daily examination of the Earth’s surface.

Which Industry Pays Colorado’s Highest Small Business Salaries? Colorado small businesses with 20 to 49 employees that offer positions in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction pay employees an average salary of $98,530. Overall, the Centennial State is in the No. 18 spot in the nation for the average salary of small businesses, according to a NerdWallet report that looks at where the highest salaries are for small businesses across the country. For its study, personal finance website NerdWallet analyzed salaries according to:Business size: businesses with fewer than 100 employees broken down into four categories — 0 to 4; 5 to 19; 20 to 49; and 50 to 99. Lockheed Martin Finishes Building Nasa Orion Capsule For Test Flight The first flight version of NASA’s Orion space vehicle is fully assembled and will be moved to its launch pad in Florida in coming weeks for an unmanned test launch Dec. 4. The capsule, designed and built by Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. (LMSS), is the first vehicle made to take astronauts to deep space destinations, such as the asteroids or Mars. LMSS, a division of defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin Corp., has been assembling the exploration test-flight version of Orion, or EFT-1, in Florida in preparation to be launched atop a specially-built Delta IV Heavy rocket made by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance. “An empty shell of a spacecraft arrived to Kennedy Space Center two years ago, and now we have a fully assembled Orion standing 72 feet tall,” said Michael Hawes, Orion program manager for LMSS. “We’re ready to launch it into space and test every inch.” That height includes a launch-abort tower that sticks up from the capsule and contains rocket engines meant to pull the capsule away from its launch vehicle to safety in the event of a mishap. The test flight slated for Dec. 4 will shoot the Orion from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to 3,600 miles beyond Earth — 15 times higher than the International Space Station — for two laps around the planet before speeding back into the atmosphere at 20,000 miles-per-hour for a Pacific Ocean splashdown. The entire flight will last less than five hours. The test is meant to mimic the extreme re-entry forces and harsh environment the crewed versions of Orion will need to withstand carrying astronauts on deep-space missions.
Orion’s launch separation systems, heat shield, structural integrity, attitude control and guidance, avionics and parachute and recovery systems will all be tested.
space missions. The printer headed to the station has been modified to function in zero-gravity and is the brain child of Made in Space, the company behind the project.
In November, the EFT-1 capsule will be lifted onto a 170-foot-tall Delta IV Heavy. The rocket and capsule’s systems will be powered up and tested in preparation for the test flight. LMSS won the contract to build Orion in 2006. Source: Denver Business Journal
US Solar Industry Booming In 2014
Gardner Research says its surveys of metalworking equipment buyers indicate spending may jump 37% next year to the highest level in seven years.
The National Journal reports “the U.S. solar market hit a major milestone in the second quarter of this year with more than half a million homes and businesses now generating solar energy.” GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association’s (SEIA) Q2 2014 U.S. Solar Market Insight Report says “the U.S. installed 1,133 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaics (PV) in the second quarter of this year.”
The resurgence will be led by automotive, aerospace, pump- and plumbing-products makers and industrial motors, said Steven Kline Jr. , director of market intelligence for Gardner. Based on past patterns, the market is likely to hit a cyclical peak in 2015 or 2016 and then weaken again, Mr. Kline said.
Utah Company Gets Grant From DOE For Fuel Cell Research The Salt Lake (UT) Tribune reports Materials & Systems Research, Inc. “has received $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for fuel-cell technological research.”
Materials & Systems Research’s “research program is one of 13 that will split $33 million the Energy Department has made available to develop ‘cost-effective, intermediate-temperature fuel cell technologies to improve grid stability and enable integration of renewable energy into the system.’” The company “is in a three-year, $2.8 million project to develop low-cost fuel cell technologies.”
3-D Printer Headed To Space Station For Testing In Zero-Gravity The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports SpaceX will be transporting a 3-D printer to space in the hopes that astronauts will be able to print replacement parts during extended
The commercial and residential “segments accounted for nearly half of all solar PV installations in the quarter.” The article notes “the residential market has seen the most consistent growth of any segment for years, and its momentum shows no signs of slowing down.” Across the US “cumulative PV and concentrating solar power (CSP) operating capacity has reached nearly 16 gigawatts (GW), enough to power more than 3.2 million homes.” Gretchen Zierick, president of Zierick Manufacturing Corp., a family-owned maker of electronic connectors in Mount Kisco, N.Y., with annual sales of more than $10 million, said she is hesitant to invest heavily in equipment because she thinks a sluggish economy won’t lead to much demand growth. She also finds turmoil in Ukraine and the Middle East unsettling. “Every day there is something new,” she said. “None of it is good.”
Ms. Zierick may buy a used metal-cutting machine instead of a new model, which would cost around $250,000.
Herb Miller, owner of Miller Machine Inc., is expecting to purchase computer-controlled metalworking equipment for his shop in Scales Mound, Ill. “We’re looking to buy this year,” he said. “We’ve already selected one or two models and we’re comparing features and prices.” Doug Conrad, co-owner of Metal Technologies Inc. in Bloomfield, Ind., said his company has already purchased 20 Makino-brand machining centers this year, raising the company’s total by about 30%. Metal Technologies, which employs 270 people in its machining operation, specializes in cutting and shaping aluminum. As the automotive industry switches to lighter-weight aluminum from steel, Metal Technologies is busy machining engine blocks, cylinder heads and other cast aluminum components used by auto makers. “We’ve been at it since the mid-1990s and this is the biggest growth spurt we’ve seen,” he said.
