“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” ~ Calvin Coolidge This is such a wonderful time of the year! In the Rocky Mountain States, it means snow and winter sports, fires in our fireplaces, and of course family for the holidays! It means days of rest for many, a time to recharge from the year of hard work. I hope that I do not offend those who do not celebrate Christmas -- I believe that the joy that surrounds the beautiful ornaments and festive lit trees that abound -- brings joy to even those who are not Christian. Despite an October and November that fostered continuing concerns about the U.S. economy and the negative impact of federal government fiscal policies, for the most part, business was business as usual. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market continued to increase in November, demonstrating an overall steady industry outlook. Additionally, production at factories increased last month, indicating the partial Federal government shutdown did little to impede the manufacturing sector. Perhaps one of the most encouraging news centers around our United States’ forecast in the energy sector, where the International Energy Agency’s long-term energy outlook predicts that the US will “surpass Russia and Saudi Arabia to become the world’s largest oil producer in 2015.” This will continue to help America to remain competitive in the global manufacturing industry. Closer to home, it is inspiring to see so many of us in the manufacturing industry, particularly small businesses, who continued to build their businesses. There were several Open Houses in the region, sponsored by machine tool dealers who offered up their showrooms, complete with the latest in machine tool technology, offering seminars for their customers to learn about new enhancements for their business, and always accompanied by fine food to eat! I was in Salt Lake City a couple of times this past month. In my travels, I wound up several times at an underpass leading to I15. Each time I went through this underpass, there was a homeless man, displaying a sign saying he was a Veteran asking for money. Several times as I went through this intersection, nobody gave the man money. But on at least 2 occasions, a generous person called the man over to their car and gave a donation. Once this happened, on both occasions, this spurred a number of other people to call him over with donations. Charity by one seemed to spur a reaction by others to also give. So, I say start the charity. It will make others want to do the same! Machine shops can still offer Christmas presents to their employees. Machinists love new machinery! The American Taxpayer Relief Act, Section 179 allows a deduction of up to $500,000 in 2013 for the cost of new and used equipment. New equipment must be placed in use in the U.S. before December 31, 2013. So act now! This tax deduction may not live through the Tax Reform talks going on now. Celebrate the season! Feel the joy and share in goodwill! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! May 2014 be a prosperous, peaceful and joyous one for us all. And of course, God Bless our Troops!

In the afternoon we will introduce Delcam Electrode, a new electrode solution that guides you seamlessly from design through manufacture to inspection of electrodes, and show you what’s new in FeatureCAM 2014. Vortex, for which Delcam has a patent pending, has been developed specifically to gain the maximum benefit from solid carbide tooling, in particular those designs that can give deeper cuts by using the full flute length as the cutting surface. It can be used for two- and three-axis roughing, threeplus-two-axis area clearance and for rest machining based on stock models or reference toolpaths. The strategy will be supplied at no additional charge to FeatureCAM customers on maintenance with the appropriate licenses. Two-axis Vortex functionality will be included for customers that have the FeatureRECOGNITION module, whereas Vortex for Z-level roughing will be able to be used by customers that have the FeatureMILL 3D HSM high-speed machining module. the inspection, alignment and assembly of large scale fabrications such as railway coaches, construction and off-highway vehicles or agricultural machinery. The Leica B-Probe works within a 32.8 ft (10 m) radial distance from the AT402 with an accuracy of ± .008 in (0.2 mm) over a full measurement range, offering greater capabilities and flexibility over similar systems that have fixed-base stations. The lightweight 6.7 oz (190 g) B-Probe features IP50 certification and is AAA battery-powered, an ideal complement to the ultra-compact, user friendly system design of the AT402. By using the move station method, the working range of the system can easily be multiplied with almost no loss in probing accuracy. For even larger parts or measurements that require higher accuracies, a standard retroreflector can also be used in combination with the B-Probe to take full advantage of the AT402’s accuracy and 525 ft (160 m) radial measuring range. “The B-Probe fills a niche between reflector-based measurements and our high-performance 6DoF (6 degrees of freedom) offering based on the Leica T-Probe and the Absolute Tracker AT901,” said Duncan Redgewell, general manager of Hexagon Metrology’s Laser Tracker Product Line. “We recognized that many industries manufacturing large-scale assemblies required range, portability and inspection of hidden features, but had only modest accuracy requirements. The B-Probe was designed specifically for these users.” Hexagon Metrology offers a comprehensive range of products and services for all industrial metrology applications in sectors Announcements Continued Page 16

manufacture six million vehicles in 2013. The Detroit Free Press reports that in order to manufacturer another two million vehicles will call for “further consolidation of the underbody structures from 15 to nine core platforms, from which Ford will build 85% of the vehicles it sells worldwide.” John Fleming, Ford’s executive vice president of global manufacturing, said the automaker will introduce more than 100 new or updated vehicles “over the next five years.” That would require, according to the Free Press, “flexible tooling and advance manufacturing processes including virtual engineering and research into new ways to make prototype parts more quickly as it develops new vehicles.”

Engineers Conducting Research That Would Allow Objects To Build Themselves The NPR (“all tech considered” blog reported “a handful of engineers around the world” are attempting to push 3-D printing “one step further” by “printing objects that can build themselves.” It is called 4-D printing. H. Jerry Qi, an associate professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, and colleagues, for example, are “using heat and mechanical pressure to transform flat objects into three-dimensional structures.” Qi and the other researchers “printed an unfolded box with glassy polymer fibers — a composite material that has ‘shape memory behavior’ — along the folds.”The researchers heated the box and allowed it to cool. The flat structure then folded into a box.

holiday money. According to the report about half of Americans plan to spend between $500 and $5,000 this holiday season; in 2012 only 40% said they would spend that much. But the big news is how these shoppers plan to spend. Most (84%) say they will shop both online and offline this year while half will use mobiles to compare pricing and about one-third will use a mobile wallet to speed things up at the checkout point. Other interesting findings from the report include: • On average holiday spending is expected to increase 20% • 52% say they will budget for the holidays • 44% say they’ll watch retailer sales/promotions to save over the holidays • 55% say they will pay cash for gifts while 29% say they’ll finance the holidays with credit cards Meanwhile, Discover’s US Spending Monitor shows that economic confidence was up. However, many are hedging their bets. According to the report: • 43% say they have money left over after paying bills • About one-third of both men and women say their personal finances are good or excellent • 10% say they may spend more on discretionary items like eating out while 14% say they will spend more on ‘major purchases’ like vacations
NASA to store climate data in the cloud Blakey: Drones hold great promise in U.S. airspace Unmanned aircraft could one day help keep Americans safer from forest fires, improve farming or aid in rescue missions, supporters of drones in the commercial airspace say, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s new plan to create a pathway to drone integration is the first step. The nation should tap the “enormity of the benefits of unmanned aircraft,” said Marion Blakey, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association, speaking at a recent event.
Discover: Look for spending increases over the holiday season Quite of bit of cash will change hands over the upcoming 2013 holiday season, according to new data out from Discover. The Aviation Week reports that after four weeks of wind-tunnel tests by Boeing and NASA at the Ames Research Center’s National Full-Scale Aerodynamic Facility, a “full-scale 757 tail” with “sweeping jet” active flow control (AFC) showed “increased rudder effectiveness.” NASA’s Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) program funded the project, which aims to “increase sideforce 20% on demand, and shrink the vertical tail by 17% to reduce aircraft fuel burn by 1-2%.” These wind tunnel tests demonstrated a “20-30%” increase in the sideforce, as well as an “optimum actuator distribution and mass flow” for a 2015 test flight for Boeing’s Eco Demonstrator program.
U.S. military is hesitant to welcome new technologies, study finds A study by the Brookings Institution suggests that the U.S. military may be having trouble embracing new technologies for future combat in favor of tried-and-true methods. In a Foreign Policy article, Brookings’ Peter W. Drone industry backers in Nevada are hoping that state will win its bid to be a test site for the Federal Aviation Administration’s integration of drones into the commercial airspace, a designation, they say, that could boost the state’s economy. “It won’t just be the FAA testing,” said Tom Wilczek, Nevada’s aerospace and defense specialist. “It’s the potential for organic growth ... Not only would there be a manufacturing platform here for civilian and humanitarian uses, but there also would be large numbers of suppliers.”

Pentagon sees ‘sufficient’ progress to boost fiscal year 2015 F-35 output The Pentagon said the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 program had made sufficient improvement to plan for higher production in fiscal year 2015, but contract awards would be tied to progress on the fighter jet’s software, reliability and other issues.
We are looking for Manufacturers Representatives in Colorado, Utah, Montana and Wyoming
“Program progress is sufficient for the department to budget for an increase in the production rate in fiscal year 2015,” Frank Kendall, undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, wrote in a memorandum. “Award of higher production rates will be contingent on continued program progress,” he wrote in the memo. He cited the need for progress in software development, improvements in a computer-based logistics system that is behind schedule, and resolution of several previously identified design issues. The jet’s reliability is also not growing at an acceptable rate, he said in the two-page memo. The $392 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon’s biggest arms program, has seen a 70 percent increase in costs over initial estimates and repeated schedule delays, but U.S. officials say the program has made progress in recent years.

Lockheed Martin and its industry partners are preparing for the next and final developmental test of the Medium Extended Air Defense System (Meads), which is designed to provide 360-deg. coverage from air and ballistic threats.
The flight test, set for early November, will include two targets, a QF-4 air-breathing drone and a Lancer tactical ballistic missile (TBM).The targets will converge on the defended area from opposite positions, stressing the 360-deg., X-band fire-control radar. This radar first tracked a TBM in June.
Certified Training! Certified Online Online Training!
Once the targets are detected – one at an “extreme high” and another at an “extreme low” altitude – the fire control radar will then detect and track all five PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptors fired in addition to the targets for intercepts. Should the first interceptor achieve a kill against the ballistic missile, operators will command a self-destruct of the second.

Protocol calls for a single missile to attack the air breather with two launched to counter the ballistic threat, says Marty Coyne, MEADS development director for Lockheed Martin. “You have three missiles running away from you and two missiles coming in,” says Gregory Kee, general manager of the NATO Meads Management Agency.

US market is showing progress The US Energy Department released a new report showing progress for the US offshore wind energy market in 2012, including the completion of two commercial lease auctions for federal Wind Energy Areas and eleven commercial-scale U.S. projects representing over 3.8 GW of capacity reaching an advanced stage of development. Further, the report highlights global trends toward building offshore turbines in deeper waters and using larger, more efficient turbines in offshore wind farms, increasing the amount of electricity delivered to consumers.
Bloomberg News reported increased production “of furniture, metals and electronics shows gains in” the sector are extending beyond the auto industry.
Maker of V-22 Osprey encouraged by foreign interest
This year’s Offshore Wind Market and Economic Analysis, authored by the Navigant Consortium for the Energy Department, builds on last year’s report, providing additional information on offshore wind’s potential to add to U.S. electricity capacity and create jobs, as well as outlining policy developments that influence the sector. This report, along with other offshore wind R&D projects that began in 2011 and advanced technology demonstration projects announced in 2012, are part of the Department’s national offshore wind strategy, supporting the development of a suite of tools and advanced engineering prototypes that can assist offshore wind project developers and industry stakeholders. The offshore wind market assessment report will be updated and published annually for a three-year period, providing stakeholders with a reliable and consistent data source. Over time, it will also inform development of a road map for accelerating development and increasing U.S. competitiveness in the offshore wind market.
Factory Production Increases 0.3 Percent In October The AP reported production at factories increased last month, indicating the partial Federal government shutdown did little to impede the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing output increased 0.3 percent in October, up from 0.1 percent from the previous month, the Federal Reserve said. The AP noted that manufacturing “has been gaining strength in recent months.” A2Z METALWORKER •

The head of Bell Helicopter said he was encouraged by foreign interest in the V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft that his company builds with Boeing Co. John Garrison, president and chief executive of Bell Helicopter, a unit of Textron Inc, said the U.S. Marine Corps’ use of the V-22 to provide disaster relief in the Philippines illustrated the capabilities of the aircraft, which can fly as fast as a plane but land like a helicopter. “I think the world continues to stand up and take notice of the capabilities of the V-22 Osprey,” Garrison told Reuters in an interview at the Dubai Airshow, where the Marine Corps has been providing demonstration flights to dozens of military officials from the Gulf region and other countries. “We’re encouraged,” Garrison said, citing strong interest in the aircraft at the air show and solid support from the U.S. Marine Corps for the international sales drive. “In this age of sequestration, and from a policy standpoint, international sales of our defense articles are important, both for U.S.
military and the defense industry,” Garrison said. The U.S. Marine Corps and Air Force have a combined fleet of 250 aircraft, and military officials see potential sales of up to 250 more aircraft in coming decades. The tilt-rotor aircraft is getting good reviews for its performance in combat after a rocky start that saw 23 Marines killed during flight testing in 2000. Two more Marines were killed during a training exercise in Morocco last year. U.S. officials are finalizing details for an initial sale of six aircraft to Israel - the initial foreign buyer of the plane - at an estimated price of $70 million each, although it may buy twice as many over the longer term. U.S. officials have also provided briefings on the V-22 to the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Italy, Brazil, Colombia, Singapore, and Australia. In addition to military uses, some countries have expressed interest in using the V-22 for VIP transport.
Certification Testing Complete on HF120 Engine GE Honda Aero Engines announced it has completed all U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification testing on its HF120 engine, with all certification reports submitted. GE Honda anticipates receiving type certification by year end. “I’m extremely proud of the team’s efforts to complete all certification activities for the HF120 engine. There has been a lot of hard work to get to this point,” said Terry Sharp, president of GE Honda Aero Engines. “We are now finalizing the supply chain and production readiness processes and establishing our customer service programs to ensure successful entry into service.” The HF120 engine program involved 13 certification ground-test
engines in addition to flight-test engines that accumulated more than 12,000 cycles and more than 8,400 hours. This included 3,000 simulated flight cycles accumulated on a single engine as part of a rigorous endurance validation program. Further endurance tests will continue on the HF120 engine utilizing Honda’s Tokyo, Japan test cell, keeping the engine well ahead of the fleet. The HF120 production design is frozen, and supply chain production readiness reviews are complete. Assembly validation is currently under way at GE’s facility in Lynn, Mass., which is responsible for initial production. Production will transition to the Honda Aero Inc. facility in Burlington, N.C., in 2014. GE Honda is also establishing its customer service and support operation. The support model will consist of a network of GE Honda Authorized Service Providers, a 24/7 GE Honda Operations Center, dedicated Field Technical Managers (FTMs) and Customer Team Managers (CTMs), among other support operations. GE Honda will offer long-term engine service agreements with Enhanced and Comprehensive maintenance and support services that go above and beyond the basic engine warranty, with coverage of both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance events. Rated at 2,095 pounds of thrust, the HF120 engine is designed to set new standards of performance in fuel efficiency, durability, and low noise and emissions.
US Expected To Become Biggest Oil Producer By 2015 McClatchy reports that International Energy Agency’s long-term energy outlook, released last month, predicts that the US will “surpass Russia and Saudi Arabia to become the world’s largest oil producer in 2015.” McClatchy reports that US “energy production is skyrocketing, led by Texas and North Dakota, as oil companies use the techniques of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling to tap oil and natural gas trapped in shale rock.” The IEA says that North America’s “need for oil imports will all but disappear by 2035.” A2Z METALWORKER •

Army Shows Off Possible Power-Saving Soldier Technologies
That’s where CERDEC steps in. Army scientists have developed an Android application that displays how much battery life is remaining as well as what devices are plugged in. Soldiers can download it to the Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphones that are part of the Nett Warrior system. The app is still under development, but CERDEC hopes to eventually transition it to program executive office soldier to be used in the Nett Warrior suite. It was tested in fiscal year 2013 as part of the Network Modification exercises held at Fort Dix, N.J., he said. “Users were able to go on a mission, and while on their mission they were able to see what devices where connected and how much energy was available on their person.” Not only would it allow individual soldiers to better manage their power supply, the application can also be used at the platoon level. For instance, if a squadron is running low on battery life, nearby squad leaders can communicate with each other by phone and pass off tasks to those with more available power, Novoa said. “It allows more decision making to be made tip to spear, versus all of that needing to go all the way up for vetting before it comes back down to another squad,” he said. This same concept could also be applied at the company level to help commanders better manage solar panels and generators, Novoa said.
ByValerie Insinna As the Army looks for ways to boost power sources without adding on bulky or heavy gadgetry, it’s also trying to improve how a soldier manages his power supply. A two-pound conformal battery is the centerpiece of the Nett Warrior system, which is intended to improve troops’ situational awareness and is currently being fielded by the service. A soldier can wear the battery in the side or front pocket of his vest, and the device is flexible enough to bend with the user’s movements, said Jonathan Novoa, a mechanical engineer with the fuel cell development team at the Army’s Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC).
CERDEC is developing a digital control that can be attached to a generator to extract information, such as whether the generator needs more fuel. That information could be sent to a company commander’s tablet, giving him a clearer picture of equipment health. “Instead of having to send someone out behind the wire to check on a generator, now you can get all of that wirelessly over the network. So it saves on the assets having to go and do period maintenance. You can see when it needs maintenance, and then be proactive,” he said. In the soldier system’s current form, data is routed through a single cable from the battery to the smartphone. Although this does drain some power from the battery, it’s not a constant communication link. “It’s just a periodic ping” for information, which keeps the energy draw low, Novoa said.
“This system allows the user to use a central battery to power all the peripherals that are on their person,” he said. “So instead of the soldier worrying about replacing various batteries of various types and all their devices, now they only have to worry about logistics supporting one battery.”
CERDEC may pursue intelligent textiles for future iterations of the system, which would allow data and power to be transferred through the material of a soldier’s vest instead of using external cables.
But with the battery buried in the vest, the user currently has no easy way to determine how much battery life is remaining, he told
It is already working on intelligent textile development, as well as a long-term goal of wirelessly networking the battery and smartphone together, he said.

During the expo, PEO soldier displayed one such prototype, designed by Intelligent Textiles Limited. Soldiers can plug a battery into the electronic textile vest, which can transfer data and energy to connected devices such as flashlights, smartphones or cameras. “This will allow for a 40 percent reduction in cables,” said Maj. Joseph McCarthy, PEO soldier’s assistant product manager for soldier power. PEO soldier also showcased energy harvesting devices, such as a knee brace that stores energy produced by a soldier’s movements. The device was developed by Canadian company Bionic Power and can generate about 12 watts of energy while walking on flatground, he said. The program office demonstrated new wearable solar panels that soldiers can mount on their helmets or attach to the back of a vest. The flexible panels — manufactured by MC10 Inc. — are made of galliumarsenide, which is more efficient than the more common amorphous silicon-based panels. Worn together, the panels will harvest about 18 watts of energy, McCarthy said. The e-textiles, solar panels and energy harvesters are still only prototypes and are still being developed under CERDEC and the Army’s Natick Soldier Systems Center contracts, he said. As such, fielding of any of these products are still years away. “If these are determined to be viable solutions, then we can bring them within the soldier power program, and we would continue to do developmental testing to ensure that is the right fit for the soldier,” he said.
Engineers Develop Exoskeleton That Helps Paralyzed Walk Again Forbes reported Michael Goldfarb, a professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University, and colleagues, “and engineers at automation giant Parker Hannifin” have developed an exoskeleton that can help the disabled walk. The exokeleton, called Indego, uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to “continuously observe and regulate a person’s posture and return them to the balance point.”

Economists had expected fewer jobs to be created because of partial federal government shutdown last month. Manufacturers expressed disappointment in the slow growth, McClatchy reported. The manufacturing sector added 19,000 jobs last month. Manufacturers have added 55,000 workers, on a year-over-year basis. The CBS Evening News reported, “Today’s jobs report beat expectations. Industry Plea: A Two-Year Sequester Delay Pro-defense lawmakers and industry groups are promoting a plan to delay automatic spending cuts by two years. The reprieve, they contend, would give the Pentagon and the defense industry time to reorganize and adapt to lower spending levels.

A bipartisan agreement to cancel sequester for two years is seen as a long shot. But lawmakers such as Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, believe it is possible. She said she will be working the committee’s ranking Republican, Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, on a bipartisan recommendation.

If would be up to the House-Senate budget conference to decide how to deal with the sequester. The 29-member panel faces a Dec. 13 deadline to set funding levels for federal agencies for fiscal year 2014 and avert another government shutdown Jan. 15 -- the same day when the second round of sequester kicks in. The White House, congressional Democrats and Republican defense hawks support a reversal or at least a deferral of the automatic cuts, which slash $1.2 trillion from federal agency budgets across the board through 2021. Fiscal conservatives in the House want to keep sequester in place. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who chairs the Appropriations defense subcommittee, would support a sequester delay, he said Nov. 13 during a hearing where representatives from defense industry associations, labor unions and small businesses testified about the impact of the automatic cuts. “Congress must act to avoid this irrational, irresponsible approach,”
Durbin said. “The first round of sequestration hit military readiness. ... The second round will cut even more deeply. It will cut into acquisition. And when we cut into acquisition, we cut jobs across America. Delaying sequester cuts by two years would help defense industry resize and plan for the future, said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Lawrence Farrell, president of the National Defense Industrial Association.

Farrell noted that is not asking for more money for defense, but for a reprieve from the law’s draconian schedule that doesn’t permit a “rational reduction of force structure to achieve the necessary savings. “We’ve lost industrial capabilities in previous downturns. But the rapid pace of sequestration puts us in a lot more danger we think at this time, Farrell said. “Sequestration abandons the regular order of budgets and rational planning. It creates uncertainty for industry and uncertainty for the military. It’s impossible to project what the future budgets and priorities are going to be for industry. Further, he said, “it is impossible to anticipate with three-month continuing resolutions and arbitrary percentage cuts where things are going. The current exemptions to sequester, like military pay, and the abruptness of sequester will result in contractors bearing the largest share of the cuts, he said.

Custom Design and Machining (CDM) Machines Parts with Best in Class Machinery Custom Design and Machining (CDM) is a small machine shop in a small town in Utah…but that is where small stops. The company has very big capabilities and talent. Co owner Brad Gardner knew from a very early age that he loved machining. He learned the fundamentals in high school, back when they still taught shop in high school. Then he went on to Utah Technical College at Provo (now Utah Valley State University). Brad’s skills were so advanced that he was made shop foreman for the college program. In 1980, Brad, a young married man just out of school, had to find work to support his family. Brad says, “I went to Volt Manufacturing, and met with the owner, Phil Sigler. I asked him for a job, and he said he wanted a guy with more experience.” Brad says, “So I asked him ‘just how does a young machinist get more experience if nobody will hire him?’” Apparently this worked, as he hired Brad to start working immediately. After 2 years at Volt Manufacturing, Brad continued to hone his manufacturing expertise, working first for Williams Research now Williams International, then Brigham Truck and Imp. in their Tool division, and finally Thiokol (ATK), where he remained for nearly a decade. At the young age of 33, Brad made the leap from employee to business owner. He started his first business with a partner, and subsequently went out on his own when a customer asked him to open a new machine shop. He named it Custom Design and Machining (CDM) in memory of his father in law, who owned a grocery store called C&D’s. Today, the company, a woman owned business, offers machining (mill and lathe), wire EDM, as well as manufacturing design assistance. Its customers range from Fortune 100 companies to small rural farmers requiring farm equipment repair, to inventors. It offers Kanban for inventory management for its customers that request this. CDM is truly a family owned business, with Brad and his wife Tracy, and two of their four children Hagen and Tandi, active in the business. You will find some of the most high technology, superior equipment at CDM, from its numerous Mazak machining and turning centers, to its Romi combination manual/CNC lathe, to its latest Mitsubishi wire EDM. For nearly all of the years Brad has been involved in purchasing machine tools, he has remained loyal to one Sales Engineer, Scott Trumble. Brad says, “I bought my first Bridgeport from Scott when he was with another machine tool dealer.” He continued, “I have a fond memory of a machine tool purchase I made through Scott while the two of us were pursuing one of our passions – fishing. We were on Devil Creek Reservoir in Idaho, talking about my business and it led to a new machine purchase.” He continued, “I buy from Scott because of our relationship, as it is one that is built on trust and honesty.” Scott joined Smith Machinery Company 7 years ago, and with his new employer, Scott was able to offer some of the best in-class machine tools A2Z METALWORKER •

to Brad, from the Mazak line, to the Mitsubishi line, to the Romi line, to name a few. Over the years, Brad has purchased Mazaks, a Mitsubishi wire EDM and a Romi from Scott and Smith Machinery. Brad utilizes an interesting method for evaluating best in class machinery. He says, “I look to see what is on the used market. When you find a machine tool brand, and there are a number of machines, just a few years old, that are already on the market, you have to wonder why.” He continued, “You just don’t find Mazaks on the used market often, and this speaks to their strength.” Brad additionally values the fact that he is purchasing Japanese machines that are made in America when he buys the Mazak VCN 510C Vertical Machining Centers. Brad loves machining, and he loves the technology that facilitates machining. Brad says, “For a long time, I’ve wanted a wire EDM. For one thing, I’ve had customers tell me that if I had one, they could send more work my way.” He continued, “I did some analysis a couple of years ago, and it showed that nearly 85% of my work was small part runs (1-5 parts), often prototype parts. These parts would run as well on a wire EDM as they would on a machining center, and there are cost advantages with the wire EDM in terms of reduced expendable tooling.” Brad and his team couldn’t be happier with their new Mitsubishi wire EDM purchase. He says, “For one, we were surprised with the ease of use with the wire EDM. Additionally, we received excellent training from Smith Machinery. It consisted of 3 days of set up and on-site training. Then we ran the machine at our shop for one month, after which we received additional training.” He continued, “Smith Machinery and Mitsubishi really took care of us.” The team at CDM was particularly impressed with the Mitsubishi talent and resources, noting that there are 14 technicians across the west coast available to support them immediately with training and repair. In CDM’s early years, 70+hour workweeks were common, and vacations were unheard of. During this time, Brad was conservative in his acquisition of capital equipment, always cognizant of the need for financial solvency. Brad’s son Hagen says, “In the last couple of years, Brad (Dad) has gained confidence in our business. He’s taken a vacation to Alaska to fish, leaving his team to run the business, where there is no phone service.” Hagen continued, “He has also become much more aggressive in acquiring new technology.” Brad agrees, saying, “You can’t make money unless you spend money, and if you don’t keep up with technology, you will not survive.” Brad and his team thoroughly enjoy working with inventors, and supporting their customers’ efforts to design products best for manufacturability. Today, Brad is working with some inventions, that he says, “Could hit it out of the park.” Hagen is designing and building metal promotional products that companies can offer, name engraved and plated, to their customers. To contact CDM, whether you are a Fortune 500 company, a farmer requiring new parts, or an inventor, they are a superior choice. Contact them at 435-257-0668. AeroVironment also produced the Global Observer hydrogen-powered unmanned aircraft. “The combination of AeroVironment’s market-leading unmanned technology and unique knowledge with Eurocopter’s world-class helicopter and systems expertise makes a formidable team,” said Roy Minson, senior vice president and general manager of AeroVironment’s unmanned aircraft systems business segment. Last April, Eurocopter performed a demonstration flight of an “optionally piloted vehicle” (OPV) version of the EC145 in France. The company said that its goal is eventually to employ any of its models in unmanned operations such as automated surveillance and cargo hauling. The cooperation with AeroVironment “will be particularly valuable as Eurocopter defines its unmanned product strategy,” said Clive Schley, Eurocopter’s senior vice president, strategy and company development.
AeroVironment and Eurocopter Might Jointly Develop Unmanned Helicopters AeroVironment and Eurocopter are exploring opportunities for cooperation. The potential transatlantic team would combine AeroVironment’s unmanned aircraft technology and systems integration skills and knowledge with Eurocopter’s helicopter technology expertise, a Eurocopter spokesman told AIN. AeroVironment developed the first hand-launched unmanned aircraft for military surveillance in 1987. Since then, the company claims to have won “every U.S. Department of Defense competition for small UAS programs of record.” It has delivered more than 20,000 new and replacement Puma, Raven and Wasp small unmanned air vehicles to customers within the U.S. and to more than 20 international governments. Last July, the Puma received an FAA type certificate, allowing restricted commercial operations. A2Z METALWORKER •

The Eurocopter spokesman told AIN that the cooperation is at an early stage. “Both companies will discuss and evaluate how they might jointly pursue commercial opportunities in military and civil fields throughout the world. A teaming agreement would be the next step in that both companies would formally agree to pursue an opportunity. This agreement is not focusing specifically on U.S. Department of Defense opportunities,” he added.
Government Speeds Research Into Car Safety Systems The AP reports that the government is hastening its research into car safety systems. Officials say they will decide by the end of the year “how to encourage automakers to make some special safety systems already in certain high-end vehicles available in more cars.”The systems, including “collision avoidance, seat belt interlocks and driver alcohol detection systems,” have
the potential to “dramatically reducing traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.”

Bloomberg News reports Robert McCutcheon, PwC’s US industrial products leader, said mergers and acquisitions in the manufacturing sector “are poised to accelerate.” McCutcheon told Bloomberg News that low “interest rates,‘fairly attractive’ valuations and corporate cash hoards will buoy” manufacturing acquisitions. PwC did not identify any manufacturers preparing for acquisitions. However, “some manufacturers are signaling that they’re ready to start buying.” For example, the CEO of Emerson Electric Co. recently said he plans $1.5 billion of acquisitions next year.

2013 Aerospace & Defense Market Survey Executive Summary
Sequestration is having a direct negative impact on aerospace and defense companies throughout the supply chain that provides the needed capabilities to the Department of Defense and other government agencies. Companies are left to juggle the financial impact of delays and cancellations of programs, workforce displacement, supplier disenfranchisement and general uncertainty. At the same time, commercial companies are under increased pressure to lower aircraft acquisition costs and, more important, ongoing operational costs. These are the main conclusions drawn from the 2013 Aerospace and Defense Survey, conducted jointly by CSC and the Aerospace Industries Association. More than 150 business and technology executives and senior managers responded to the 13th annual survey, which included questions about business, economic and technology challenges over the past 12 months, as well as near-term expectations. For the second consecutive year, the leading challenges for A&D companies related to defense cutbacks, program cancellations and uncertainty in government funding. The impact is affecting a wide variety of programs: • Significant decline in ability to attract the next generation of workers to replace retiring workers

Defense Industry Seeks To Maintain Profits Through Space Exploration. Politico reports that amid the slowdown in Pentagon spending, defense contractors are turning their attention to space. The article notes that in addition to its desire to remain involved in constructing rockets and satellites, Lockheed and Boeing representatives appeared on Tuesday in Washington to plead their case for “involvement in NASA’s planned Space Launch System-Heavy Launch Vehicle and Orion spacecraft, which are being planned and built now in anticipation of human travel to Mars, as well as future missions of similar magnitude.” Said James Crocker, vice president of civil space at Lockheed Martin Space Systems, “People really don’t understand how big a business space is. I mean, the commercial satellite market is enormous. It far dwarfs anything that’s going on in exploration...There’s a lot of money to be made.” A2Z METALWORKER •
