“I have always had a dream to take part in the Olympic Games, and losing my leg didn’t change anything.”
Natalie du Toit, South African Olympic Swimmer South African swimmer Natalie du Toit became the first amputee ever to qualify for the Olympics, where she competed at the 2008 Beijing Games, and placed 16th in the 10K, “Marathon”, swim. In ancient Greece, wars would stop for the Olympic games. It was not simply a time out for recreation, but rather an opportunity for humans to honor the gods by achieving acts of human excellence. It was an arena for athletes to surpass all humanly limits, to offer up to the gods of Olympus people who in body best modeled them. The modern Olympics began with a more spiritual hope, to provide a forum for the world to come together peacefully in the mutual enjoyment of universal sport. In essence, the Olympic games symbolize the values of global integration, international competition and collaboration, stamina, discipline and teamwork. And, a small but significant milestone will be realized in the Olympic Games 2012 -- Saudi Arabia agreed to send two women to compete, meaning that for the first time ever, all participating nations will have females competing. I am mesmerized with the Olympic athletes throughout the world. Their dedication, talent, persistence, poise and work ethic are so inspiring. And I am not alone – more than 4 billion people around the world are expected to watch the opening ceremony on July 27, 2012. According to a study based on superior athletes, the following eight traits were found to constitute the ultimate athlete:

We can’t all be great athletes. The majority of us don’t have it in our physical make-up. And, while I dreamed as a child of being the first female professional quarterback, alas, it was not meant to be. Less than 14,000 people will participate in these Olympics, while our estimated world population is nearly 7 billion (.000002). But the traits evidenced in successful athletes are clearly those that make superior employees, owners, executives, and anyone in business. I am not only motivated by our world’s finest athletes -- I am inspired by the manufacturing entities I interview. They are doing great things and through their unrelenting pursuit of excellence, jobs are being retained in the United States. I encourage you to read their stories in this issue.

speeds and feeds * Carbide Tipped – For use with highly abrasive metals and non-metallic composites * Triple Chip – for cutting exotic metals and for high production applications, some nonferrous foundry.
There’s a large section of teeth gone on my blade. What happened? More than likely you hit some hard spots in your material, you may have had too much head weight or too many teeth in the work. You should never have more than 24 teeth in the work or less than three. Six to 12 is optimum. Which tooth pitch should we use? Number of teeth in the cut: * Minimum – 3 teeth in the cut. If there are too few teeth in the cut, the teeth can straddle the work piece, which can cause stripping. * Maximum – 24 teeth in the cut.Too many teeth in the cut may cause the gullets to “overload”, because there is not enough gullet capacity. The “optimum” TPI is 6 to 12 teeth engaged in the cut at one time. What are the conditions that influence pitch selection? * Soft materials: Require fewer teeth and more gullet capacity (Aluminum, Copper, Bronze, Carbon Steels) * Tough Materials: Use a moderate amount of teeth in the cut – in the 12 to 18 tooth range (Inconel, Hastalloy,Waspalloy, Monel, Steels) * Hard Materials: Use more teeth in the cut – in the 18 to 24 tooth range (D-2, Die Steels, Stainless Steels) * Machine capabilities: constant feed machines can use a coarser pitch, whereas gravity feed machines typically require a finer pitch. What are the pitch selection that matters for production or blade A2Z METALWORKER

life? * For production cutting, use tooth pitches near the coarse end of the range * For good finish or smoother cut surfaces, use finer teeth * For best blade life, run in the middle to the fine end of the recommended tooth pitch range. What blade speed should we use? * Material Machinability Rating – The lower the machinability rating the slower the band speed will need to be. * Blade Selection – The cutting edge (tooth tip) of the blade will govern the speed at which the blade can run (FlexBack = Slowest Cutting, Carbide = Fastest Cutting) * Cutting Noise / Vibration – Cutting noise or vibration is a killer to a cutting edge – if either is present, the speed must be decreased * Coolant / Cutting Fluid – If the coolant is adequate, use the standard cutting chart speeds. When cutting dry, reduce the speed by 40-50%. What is the rake angle of your saw blade teeth? * Most bimetal bandsaw blades vary in rake angle from 0 to 10 degree positive rake angle.

FeatureCAM was the world’s first featurebased programming software when it was launched in 1995. Constant development since then has ensured that the system has retained its leadership in programming speed and ease of use, while an increased range of strategies has been added to provide more efficient toolpaths giving greater productivity on a wider range of machines. The main change to the 2013 FeatureCAM product family has been the introduction of three levels of 3D machining functionality. FeatureMILL 3D Lite offers single-surface machining with a basic range of strategies and so provides an introductory product for companies moving into 3D machining for the first time. FeatureMILL 3D MX provides a greater number of strategies, including spiral finishing, flowline finishing and rotary machining, support for multiple-surface mac hining and automated feature recognition. It is aimed at companies with conventional machine tools and those that are machining softer materials. The agreement puts in force a multi-year procurement that was approved by Congress as part of the Pentagon’s fiscal 2012 budget. It includes several variants of the helicopter to be used by the different military services and runs through fiscal 2016. This is the Pentagon’s eighth multi-year procurement of the workhorse helicopters and includes options that could add $1 billion to $2 billion to the contract’s value, if exercised, said the sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly. “The Black Hawk series has become the poster child for multi-year contracts,” said aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia of the VirginiaA2Z METALWORKER

The UH-60 Black Hawk, which first flew in 1974, is a twin-engine single-rotor helicopter used to transport assault troops, evacuate injured troops and carry out special missions. It normally carries 12-15 troops but can accommodate up to 20.

To.Improve.Manufacturers’.Energy.Efficiency Politico reported that the Energy Department was set to announce the award of $54 million across 13 projects “to advance transformational technologies and materials that can help American manufacturers dramatically increase the energy efficiency of their operations and reduce costs.” The DOE said that “the projects will leverage an additional $17 million from the private sector.” MIT, GM, Dow Chemical Company, Lyondell Chemical Company and the American Iron and Steel Institute are among the recipients. Politico points out that “one recipient, MEMC Electronic Materials, a silicon wafer manufacturer, saw its debt rating reduced by Moody’s last week after ‘financial distress in MEMC’s solar operations,’ a different unit from its semiconductor operations.” In its coverage of this story, Platts reports that Dow Chemical Co., which received the largest award of $9 million, “in collaboration with Ford Motor Co. and DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will collaborate on a project that will use a better feedstock to make carbon fiber materials for automobiles, wind turbines and other applications. DOE says that using the new feedstock -- polyolefin -- will reduce production costs by 20% and carbon dioxide emissions by 50%.” General Motors received $2.7 million from the DOE “for a project designed to reduce the weight of car doors by upward of 60%. Bombardier Aerospace “is confident in the strong, long-term potential of the business aircraft industry” and, in its latest 20-year forecast for the business aircraft market, released last month, it predicts deliveries of 24,000 business jets (excluding very light jets and bizliners) worth $648 billion from 2012 to 2031. Broken down in 10-year increments, the forecast anticipates 9,800 business jet deliveries worth $266 billion from 2012 to 2021 and 14,200 deliveries worth $382 billion from 2022 to 2031. “While the business aviation market continues to recover, current market indicators are mixed,” Bombardier said. “Market confidence needs to be fully restored for industry business jet deliveries to increase strongly and enable the industry to realize its full potential.”The Canadian aircraft manufacturer said deliveries this year are expected to lag order intake, so business jet deliveries for 2012 are thus expected to be on par with last year. Bombardier believes that business jet deliveries will return to sustained growth starting next year, with the large-cabin jet segment growing the fastest. Bombardier predicts that North America will dominate the market, with 9,500 new business jet deliveries over the 20 years of the forecast.

Natural.Gas The Denver Post reported Colorado State University and Oregon State University-Bend have come together in order to build a truck that will run on compressed natural gas. The universities have received $700,000 grant from the US Department of Energy in order to work on this project. Tom Bradley, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at CSU, said that if the project works then people would be able to fill up their vehicles with the same line that they use to heat their oven or their house.
said William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for the Human Exploration Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “While the SLS team is making swift progress on the initial configuration and building a solid baseline, we also are looking ahead to enhance and upgrade future configurations of the heavy lift vehicle. We want to build a system that will be upgradable and used for decades.” The initial launch system uses two fivesegment solid rocket boosters similar to the ones that lifted the space shuttle into orbit. Future launch systems will need much more power than is currently available from any existing U.S. rocket. SLS is being designed for crew and cargo missions to deep space targets including an asteroid in 2025 and Mars in the 2030s.

Popular Science reports, “New kinds of coatings and sensors that can help engineers detect stress or deformation in structures abound, but most are limited by the scope of deformation they can detect and the need to be physically connected to an output device.” Rice University researchers “may have overcome these obstacles with a new kind of nanotube-packed ‘strain paint’ that alerts engineers to compression and stress in an underlying structure by glowing under nearinfrared light.” The “strain paint can map stress across an entire area, in any direction, and without the inspector having to be extremely close to the object being inspected. It works via a long-ago discovered characteristic of semiconducting carbon nanotubes that causes damaged nanotubes to glow fluorescent in the presence of near-IR light.”

COMMITMENT. INNOVATION. QUALITY. You may not be familiar with the company called Lifetime. But chances are, you own products that are designed and manufactured by them. This is especially true if you are an avid outdoor enthusiast, as Lifetime makes such products as swing sets, lawn chairs, picnic tables, storage sheds, kayaks, tent trailers, and basketball hoops, to name a few. Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Clearfield, Utah, Lifetime Products, Inc. is a world leading manufacturer, with products sold in more than 70 countries. At corporate headquarters today, Lifetime occupies more than 2.6 million square feet spread over 21 buildings, staffed with more than 1500 employees. From its inception, Lifetime has applied innovation and cutting-edge technology in plastics and metals to develop innovative products with superior strength and durability.Today, the company holds hundreds of patents for its innovative designs and products. It remains privately owned and debt-free. When asked how Lifetime continues to thrive with design, engineering and manufacturing largely in the United States, long-term employee and Machine Shop manager Kelly Martinez (25 years tenure) says, “We have superior design engineers, and an entire team of employees that are dedicated to coming up with innovative ideas for new products and product improvements. We know that innovation isn’t a luxury - it’s a necessity for our growth.” Kelly continued, “Early on in our existence, we set up our own engineering department and our own machine shop. Since we do all of our own mold and tool and die making in-house (we even make many of the machines needed for our operations), we save time and money. In the past, when we’ve outsourced tooling to a 3rd party, the tooling time increased 2 to 3 fold.” With all design and manufacturing under their control, products typically move from design to production in under a year. New design ideas often come from the suggestion boxes that are installed throughout the Lifetime campus. The Utah-based state-of-the-art facility houses some of the industry’s most innovative equipment. Lifetime Metals is the region’s leading supplier of processed steel. From slitting and leveling, to roll forming, tube milling and stamping, their trained and certified staff manufactures quality, custom steel products at an exceptional value. The machine shop, staffed by 21 experienced machinists, is an integral part of Lifetime’s business. Kelly says, “We believe in buying new machines, and we always buy quality machines. But perhaps the important criteria we use in our machine tool selection is the service support we can expect. Our machines just can’t go down.” Kelly and the machine shop team have a long history with Smith Machinery, and the Mazak machine tool line. In fact, they purchased their first Mazak more than 20 years ago, and only in the last few months did they sell that machine to make room for a new Mazak. Kelly says the 23-year old Mazak is still going strong, and was sold to a small local job shop. Today the company owns 4 Mazak vertical machining centers, including 2 NEXUSVNC-510Cs, a NEXUSVCS-410A, aVTC-300C, and one lathe, a Mazak QuickTurn NEXUS (QTN) 300 turning Center. The team says that they continue to purchase Mazak Machines from Smith Machinery for a number of reasons: • Reliability, accuracy, durability and ease of use. • Powerful Mazak controls equipped with both Mazatrol conversational programming and G-Code programming. • Outstanding service, both from Smith Machinery and Mazak direct; Kelly says Clark Smith, owner of Smith Machinery, and his team just care more about their customers than many other machine tool dealers. • Superiority in consistently holding the tight tolerances that Lifetime requires for their tool steel parts. • All of the Mazak machines in Lifetime’s Machine Shop are made in Florence, Kentucky. Last year, two of their programmers visited Mazak’s facilities to see how their machines are manufactured. This is important to Lifetime, as they also strive to maximize their manufacturing facilities in the United States. Kelly says, “We love companies that promote jobs in this country.” Lifetime’s latest machine tool purchase is a Mitsubishi MV1200S, Mitsubishi’s next generation high performance Wire EDM, which was installed last month. Though the company has other wire EDM machines, it was their first Mitsubishi purchase. Kelly says, “We had 3 different manufacturers perform competitive test cuts for our evaluation, and the Mitsubishi came out on top. It took 1/3 less time to cut the part, and it used 1/3 less wire consumption for a comparable finish and accuracy.” He continued, “Since it was our first for Mitsubishi, we contacted some local shops that owned Mitsubishi EDM’s. Not only did they love their machines, but they also stressed that the service support was outstanding. Mitsubishi has a staff of more than a dozen service engineers throughout the western United States to support their customers. This made our purchase decision easy.” Lifetime’s machine shop largely manufactures products for its own use. But, Kelly says, “We support a number of external customers with our roll forming (odd shape, rounds, square), and our blow molding capabilities.” Contact Lifetime for your roll forming and blow molding needs today. They can be reached at: (801) 776-1532, and you can learn more about their outdoor living products at lifetime.com. HISTORY OF LIFETIME In the beginning, all Barry Mower, founder of Lifetime Products, wanted was a sturdier basketball pole for his backyard. With this in mind, he found and purchased a piece of heavy-duty used pipe, a sheet of plywood, and a basketball rim.The result was a basketball standard for his backyard. That was in 1972. Seeing the potential that others might also desire a quality basketball system in their yards, he placed an ad in the “Big Nickel,” the local free classified newspaper, and made his first sale. The rest — as they say — is history. Not too many years after selling his first basketball system, he created the American PlayWorld company in 1973, which he based in his garage located in Riverdale, Utah. Gradually this store kept expanding into many more types of playground equipment, and was eventually moved to a bigger location in South Ogden, Utah. Several years later, the company transformed the basketball industry with the introduction of the Quick Adjust basketball pole — the first complete basketball system you could raise up and down with a broomstick. In March 1986, a separate company was created to concentrate specifically on manufacturing adjustable basketball systems. This new company was named Lifetime Products, the name inspired by the goal of building a durable, lasting product.

The potential cuts in defense spending will have a dramatic impact on the industry and on the U.S. economy in general, without Congressional action on sequestration, according to a panel in Washington, D.C. An Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) panel discussion presented the uncertainty facing defense and aerospace manufacturers throughout the United States, as they await action on sequestration, which could lead to $500 billion in cuts to federal defense spending. Congress is expected to take up the action this fall, and the cuts would take effect in January. The defense and aerospace industry accounts for 3.53 million U.S. jobs, $38 billion in tax revenue and $89.6 billion in exports, and the federal government alone employs an estimated 845,198 aerospace and defense workers at armed forces maintenance and repair depots, according to AIA. And, a $500 billion cut to federal contracts for all of the above could have a drastic financial impact on aerospace and defense, and the U.S. economy. “The commercial aerospace business is one of the sectors in which the United States enjoys a positive balance of trade with the rest of the world,” said Bruce Olsson, assistant director of legislative and political action, International Association of Machinists and AerospaceWorkers. “We should be fighting tooth and nail to preserve that balance of trade.” In recent weeks, the pending sequestration decision has received increased attention from executives at defense contractors, particularly A2Z METALWORKER

second-tier contractors, who say they may have to warn hundreds of thousands of employees about possible layoffs, because of a federal law that requires a notice of 60 to 90 days for large scale job cuts. Olsson said some second-tier defense and aerospace manufacturing companies have already begun issuing those notices. “There’s a misperception on Capitol Hill and everywhere else, that sequestration, it might hurt Lockheed and Boeing, but they’re defined companies and they’re fine, they have revenues of $40 billion or something like that a year,” said MacKenzie Eaglen, resident fellow for National Security at the American Enterprise Institute. “For every dollar that Congress appropriates to a program that say goes to a prime contractor like Lockheed or Boeing, 75 cents goes out the door to ATK. So this is not about Boeing and Northrop and Lockheed, they probably would be OK relatively speaking.” Steve Cortese, senior vice president of Washington operations at ATK, said, “For us I would characterize the implications of sequestration into two broad categories, disruption and cost,” said Cortese, adding uncertainty regarding the possible sequestration is the biggest challenge facing companies like ATK right now. “The cost piece of this is a product of that uncertainty. If we have to disrupt those production lines, if we have to delay deliveries, if our customer in the Department of Defense or industry, is unable to confirm the planned orders and execute the fixed price contracts, that is going to immediately and without the ability for recovery, lead to greater costs both immediately and downstream,” said Cortese.

“Endovascular repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms involving branch vessels represents a clinical and technological challenge that Medtronic is committed to solving for the benefit of physicians and patients alike,” said Tony Semedo, vice president and general manager of the company’s Endovascular Therapies business. “In fact, about 40 percent of these cases involve coverage of the LSA –– and, therefore, often require surgical bypass to preserve blood flow to the posterior brain and left arm.” “Our Valiant Mona LSA system could potentially obviate the need for LSA bypass procedures, extending the benefits of endovascular repair without surgery to more patients with thoracic aortic aneurysms,” Semedo added. “We are pleased that the device was selected by the FDA for its early feasibility pilot program, which demonstrates the agency’s understanding of the need for collaborative innovation.” In 2011, the FDA published a draft guidance document to encourage and facilitate early feasibility studies of innovative medical devices in the United States. The pilot program will help test and refine the new approaches described in the draft guidance, which can be found on the FDA website.

Colorado’s.Brush.High.School.Holds.STEM. Camp.For.Elementary.Students The Brush (CO) News-Tribune reports, “Future scientists, engineers and technology-minded youngsters crammed the halls of Brush High School (BHS) earlier this summer as Brush Public Schools hosted the fifth annual, nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention Program that enticed a total of 94 eager young minds from grades one through six throughout Morgan County to flock to the week-long summer adventure in creativity.” The children “projects to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and creative problem solving as they rotated through five modules each day that disguised learning as fun.” This year’s camp “saw a spike in attendance from prior years as the program received a STEM grant through Xcel Energy to provide scholarships and more opportunities to area children.”
Future.of.EELVs.hangs.in.the.balance. For better or worse, the future of US military and strategic spaceflight is tied closely to two rockets: Lockheed Martin’s Atlas V and Boeing’s Delta IV - both evolved expendable launch vehicles (EELVs) marketed and flown by United Launch Alliance (ULA). ULA looks immune to competition for the foreseeable future. Its reliability record has been excellent - Atlas V has a 100% success rate since introduction in 2002 and there has been just one Delta IV failure, in 2004 - and government criteria for new entrants call for a daunting number of successful launches for some categories of payload.
COST OF THRUST The most expensive components of EELVs are the engines. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne supplies all EELV propulsion, with the exception of the RD-180 which powers the Atlas core. This engine is built by NPO Energomash in Russia and imported to the USA by RD Amross, an Energomash/Rocketdyne joint venture. In the short term, ULA and Rocketdyne are testing the RL-10C, a new model RL-10 to launch on both Atlas and Delta. “That program is fully funded, and eventually we’ll be putting that engine across our entire fleet,” says George Sowers, vice-president of advanced programs at ULA. But it is still essentially the same engine technology. To that end, the US Air Force is looking for an RL-10 replacement. “The RL-10s are having a problem,” says Bruce Thieman, capability
lead at the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) responsive space access office. “It is probably the most reliable engine ever built, but the industrial base that makes it possible is going away. So you’ve got to move to more modern materials that are used by the commercial industrial base. So you’ve got to redesign that engine.” AFRL’s program is called “upper-stage engine technologies”, and spans a number of concepts. Companies are lining up in expectation of a formal request for information on the issue. Traditional players, including Rocketdyne and Aerojet, are to compete, while less prominent ones (such as Xcor and Orbitec) are also exploring applicable technologies. “They’re probably going to make a program decision in the next year, and then it’ll probably be a three-year program of acquisition to replace that upper stage,” says Thieman. With less urgency, the industry is also looking hard at replacements for the liquid-oxygen/kerosene-fuelled RD-180. AFRL and contractor Aerojet have been running the hydrocarbon boost technology demonstrator, looking at ways to get better thrust-to-weight and efficiency out of a hydrocarbon-based engine using the RD-180’s footprint. COST OF WASTE Expendable systems are, by definition, wasteful - every launch leaves spent stages either in the sea or in orbit. But reusable concepts have so far failed to deliver on promises of either reduced cost or increased flight rates. Thieman says: “If you do expendables, you’re not going to reduce the cost - maybe 10% is the best we’ve been able to do working with launch folks. There are things you can do to get better capability - a better engine - but to actually get it cheaper, you’ve really got to change the paradigm.” A fully reusable launch vehicle is a holy grail of rocket science. AFRL has taken an incremental view, proposing a reusable booster system called Pathfinder. RBS is a two- or three-stage-to-orbit booster system, with a rocket-powered flyback booster for the first stage, which would return to base and land horizontally. Making the first stage reusable via a rocket-back manoeuvre - gimballing the nozzles to turn - keeps heat on the airframe low, reducing the need for costly and delicate thermal protection.
“The purpose is to do a concept demonstrator that flies out over the water at supersonic speeds, turns around and comes back, and then we’re going to put an augmenter on it to drive it up to about Mach 3.5 to make sure you understand all the technical issues,” says Thieman. “You turn an engine around and fly it backwards, the plume will wrap around the vehicle. Will it burn the vehicle? Does it damage the nozzle on the back end? Does it cause thermal problems on the top or the bottom? Fuel sloshes around in the tank - how do you keep the fuel in the back so it feeds the rocket engine?” He continued, “How do you do this autonomously and interface it with the range, because you’ve now got a vehicle coming back to Vandenberg [AFB] or [Cape] Canaveral with fuel on board - that makes it a flying bomb.” A2Z METALWORKER

Fast forward to 1980. Business continues to grow and the word is out that Micro 100 makes an incredible tool. Jack and family loved hunting and fishing and on a vacation trip through theTreasure Valley area in greater Boise area in Idaho, they all fell in love with it. Shortly after their return from their trip they had a conference with their employees and announced they were moving the business to Meridian Idaho. They asked their long time employees to come with them and start a new life in Idaho. Four of the employees moved with four family members, Jack, Dale,Wayne, Ron, and all their families. Two remain working at the plant today and the other two retired from the company that brought them to Idaho. That says a lot for the management team and the work environment at Micro 100. We interviewed Randy Nedrow,VP of Sales & Marketing for Micro 100 and asked what the secret sauce was and how management applies it. Randy told us the average tenure at Micro 100 is 17 plus years, unheard of in this industry. Randy said, “Dale Newberry, the President all the way through to the janitor, lead by example. not a dictatorship; we harbor and foster a culture of ownership. We have quarterly employee meetings and share every aspect of the business with all employees. Many people can’t believe we share all the information about our company. The leadership team of the company is Dale Newberry-President, Wayne Newberry-VP, Randy Nedrow, VP Sales & Marketing, Craig Graf- VP Manufacturing, & Mick Armstrong – VP Finance. This management team brings in all employees in groups to their employee conference room and goes over every detail from quality, flow rates, cycle time improvements to finance. We show actual numbers and everyone in the company feels like they are an owner. The employees enjoy a 401K plan that Micro 100 matches very generously and bonuses are distributed to every employee. We have grown in every year this business has existed except for one and we felt the pain that everyone in the industry did that year.” We asked Randy, “So what makes your company’s tools different from all the many other manufacturers in the world?” Randy said, “If you put an end mill in front of our competitors and asked them to give us one reason their end mill is better than mine, all ten will believe they have something better, the shape, the flute, the geometry, etc.The truth is, every manufacturer of tools uses the same type of grinders and various methods for making cutting tools, and everything is basically the same. The only difference is the carbide, Game Over. Tools break because of the carbide quality and consistency of grain or lack of it. If you have inconsistent grain in your carbide it breaks. With Micro 100’s proprietary carbide treatment every ingredient of the substrate is completely homogeneous (of uniform structure or composition throughout) every time. No one else can do this because Micro 100 changed everything. This is the main reason we can drop a tool on a cement floor and it does not shatter or break. Our tools are one of the highest priced tools on the market at the time of purchase and by the time they finally wear out the consumer can realize a 30% to 3000% longer tool life. This makes our tools the least expensive at the end of their life of use.” Micro 100 sells into over 64 countries with a very unique and able sales force of 38 sales
engineers providing solutions. Randy’s sales team consists of Engineers, Programmers, Machinists, and the like. Randy told us, “you can always teach a guy to sell but knowledge is a very necessary trait in fixing and solving problems at the end user. Our sales force members are educators and will go to the consumers, and offer solutions right at the spindle, make a sale and walk into the local Micro 100 Distributor and hand the sale right over to them. Selling through industrial distributors is not revolutionary by any means, however being very loyal to them, having a minimum number of distributors and protecting them is indeed very revolutionary in current times. A company in our size range generally has about 1200 to 1400 distributors in the marketplace; MICRO 100 has close to 400; by design. One of our company credos is do the maximum amount of business with the least amount of partners; we are the last of the Mohicans. If we get an order from anyone that is not an authorized distributor we will not ship it. It must go through our authorized distribution network. Our distributor network relationships are a foot wide and over 2000 ft. deep, Randy laughs.” “We have a very close relationship with great support for our distribution family.” Micro 100 literally doubled the size of the plant and employees about a decade ago.Today they have 115 non-union employees in a very modern state of the art 52K sq. ft. facility. With a multimillion dollar plant expansion 12 years ago, complete new manufacturing systems in place, the Micro 100 team instituted a Kanban system, promoting discipline in manufacturing and added millions in capital investments to improve the way they do business. Back at the time of the expansion the mayor of Meridian nominated Dale Newberry– Idaho Small Business Owner of the Year. “Our company is so genuine. Dale even went to theWhite House for a dinner withVice President Gore as a result of the award.” Randy said. Micro 100 is without a doubt a world leader in cutting tools and maintains the market leadership position in the Brazed Tooling segment. Leading by example, leading a great team, producing a superior product, through a highly professional sales engineering team, with a strong and viable distribution network. This is a winning combination.
Here’s what some customers and business associations say about Micro 100:
it’s indestructible; a user of their products never has problems with Micro 100’s quality. They have some of the best on time deliveries in the industry! They have expanded their products to cover a greater breadth of the industrial market and are continually doing so by developing new tooling to offer the market. Micro 100 falls into a selective group of our A1 top suppliers. They really are a great bunch of people!” Director of Purchasing for a Major Nationally Acclaimed Tool Supply Company “Micro 100 has positioned themselves over the years as a provider of unique carbide cutting tools that span various applications in many markets. Although Micro grain carbide may be commonplace, Micro 100 has always led their marketing efforts with how their extraordinary process of producing micro grain carbide stands above the rest. Their continued success in the heavily saturated carbide round cutting tool market is truly a testament to their manufacturing, quality, and marketing efforts over many years.” Senior Product Manager for a Major Nationally Acclaimed Tool Supply Company “I have been using Micro 100 products for over 25 years. They make great carbide and I really like the Micro-QUIK quick-change tooling. The sales force and customer support is really good to the point that I can get free tools to try on specific and difficult jobs. I have a shop with 53 screw machines and I couldn’t run it without Micro 100.” President for a Large Machine Shop
“Micro 100 is a key supplier for our Tool Company. They offer a broad range of high end products, competitively priced, and with quick delivery. The Micro 100 team is great to work with and always available when necessary. It is always a pleasure to speak with Randy Nedrow about any issue including industry trends.” Senior Product Manager for a Nationally Acclaimed Industrial Distributor
“I’ve been doing business with Micro 100 for over 15 years. They have a superior product and compared to their competitors it is much better. Our cost per part is minimized with their tooling; I make more profit with their tools. I’m never shut down and they always deliver. The product is always the same with no variation. This is very important to us. Their technical knowledge is excellent and their field service, Charlie Mersinas is awesome! Charlie is trustworthy, has great character, and he is allowed free reign in my shop. He is there to help us. Also, the Micro-QUIK Quick-Change system has really helped us reduce set ups and lower our costs. It’s the best thing since sliced bread!” General Manager for a Large Machine Shop
“OurTool Supply Company has been a distributor for Micro 100 since the early 90’s.The cooperation from Micro 100 is excellent. Their customer service is outstanding, from their field support staff to the inside sales personnel. All bend over backwards to help as needed! As to the product itself,

“I have worked with and for Micro 100 for 14 years now. This company is one of the best carbide manufacturers in the USA without question. Micro 100’s products are always manufactured to the utmost of quality and care and do not come back from the consumer due to manufacturing errors. With only a .04% return rate that gives the salesman in the field the confidence it takes to achieve new business and educate our dealers of the benefits of selling our products to their customers. I have worked with many different manufacturers over the years and Micro 100 remains and still is number 1 from a sales point of view. I am an independent representative that can only be as effective as the manufacturers we represent and because of Micro 100 my agency has reached new heights within the distribution channel we focus our efforts on day in and day out. Lockheed’s.Next.Prez.Targets.Boosting.Export.Sales.To.20.Percent Incoming President Marillyn Hewson told reporters that Lockheed would pursue an increase in foreign sales but did not say how. She was asked what regions and sectors were likely to be the source of most of the sales. She listed the Asia-Pacific and Middle East, which pretty much anyone could guess at. Europe will also figure in the growth, but won’t drive most of it, she added. A wide of range of weapons may help to boost foreign sales. “We see opportunities to grow our business internationally and in the UK,’ Hewson said. Lockheed just opened a security intelligence center here and another is opening in Australia. Cloud computing is also an important part of the cyber approach. Possible sales of integrated air and missile defense systems to the UAE and Saudi Arabia are “big opportunities for us,” added Gerard Fasano, president of Lockheed’s information systems and global solutions. Airborne ISR systems are also a promising area of sales to Europe, Fasano said. And, of course, no one should forget the importance of international sales of the Joint Strike Fighter program.

Lighter composite materials, more advanced engines and smaller fuselages could enable new jets to travel about twice as fast as Concorde, which flew at up to 1358mph. Passengers will travel at speeds of more than 2,485mph, allowing them to cruise in luxury from London to Sydney, just over 12,000 miles away. Currently, the fastest subsonic executive jet, Gulfstream’s new G650, can fly 7,000 miles at a 646mph and has a top speed of just 704mph. But its successor , codenamed X-54, will ‘prove that an aircraft can be shaped for low sonic boom’, reports Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine.
Aircraft enthusiasts are waiting with growing anticipation for the unveiling of plans for a supersonic jet that may be able to fly London to Sydney in just four hours.
Robert Bass, a Texas hedge fund trader, has banked 50 $200,000 deposits for his company’s Aerion SBJ supersonic jet after enlisting Nasa’s help - even though no delivery dates have been set.
Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Gulfstream are leading the way to build the new supersonic passenger plane which will be targeted at first at the business jet market.
The 12-seat planes are expected to cost $80m each and are being marketed to European and Middle East buyers under the slogan, ‘To the USA and back in a working day.’
All three companies believe they are close to reduce the sonic boom to a sound described by a Gulfstream engineer as ‘closer to a puff or plop’.
The challenge is not just technical: builders have to prove to politicians that the supersonic jets will be acceptable to the public. Concorde’s loud boom forced it onto to routes away from land and damaged its commercial chances. It flew for the last time in November 2003.

ATK.Unveils.Unique.Liberty.Capability ATK, the company leading development of the Liberty commercial spacecraft, is pleased to announce an expanded crew and cargo capability. The extended cargo configuration will allow the Liberty spacecraft to take full advantage of the launch vehicle lift capacity to transport a pressurized pod (the Liberty Logistics Module or LLM) along with the composite crew module. Based on NASA’s 15-foot diameter Multi-Purpose Logistic Module design, the LLM will include a common berthing mechanism and will be capable of transporting up to 5,100 pounds of pressurized cargo. With that capability, the LLM could be used to transport four full-size science racks to the International Space Station – along with a team of scientists to perform the associated science. While on the launch pad and during launch, the LLM will be fully protected by a lightweight shroud. Once the launch vehicle is through the earth’s atmosphere, the shroud is no longer needed and will be jettisoned, maximizing payload capability.

In May, Senate Armed Services Committee members derided the $26-per-gallon biofuel and petroleum cocktail fueling the Navy’s “Great Green Fleet,” an aircraft carrier strike group testing greenenergy fuels, during a markup of the 2013 Defense Authorization Bill. But with the Great Green Fleet setting sail last month for a six-week naval exercise in the Pacific Rim, the administration is rebuffing lawmakers and using the opportunity to continue its push for the military to use cleaner fuels. The Navy, Department of Agriculture and Department of Energy (DOE) will offer $30 million in matching funds to support “dropin” biofuel research and development, an Energy spokesman said. DOE also will contribute $32 million to a separate initiative for “early-stage, pre-commercial investments” in biofuel technology. “Drop-in” refers to the ability to use the fuel with existing infrastructure and technology, making implementation easier and less expensive. Large-scale adoption of that substitute fuel could help reduce the use of diesel and jet fuels in military and commercial transportation operations, DOE says. Funding for the drop-in effort comes from the Defense Production Act, which aims to boost national security through fostering domestic energy production. The administration, however, defended its emphasis on biofuels as a national security issue. The Defense Production Act “is a critical component of strengthening our national security, and energy is a national security issue,” U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said. “Our reliance on foreign oil is a significant military vulnerability and it would be irresponsible not to address it.” The Obama administration hopes developments in that energy technology could help achieve its goal of dropping oil imports by one-third by 2025. Of the $32 million DOE program, $20 million will go toward pilot- and demonstration-scale bio-refineries to help meet jet fuel and shipboard diesel standards. The remaining $12 million will fund up to eight projects “focused on researching ways to develop biobased transportation fuels and products using synthetic biological processing,” DOE said.

NASA.Upgrading.Space.Station.To.Boost.Research NASA has plans to upgrade the International Space Station (ISS) in the months ahead to make it more efficient as a research laboratory. With assembly of the U.S. portion of the lab completed and the U.S.side crew working to its planned average capacity of 35 hr. a week collectively spent on research, efforts are under way to improve communications links that scientists on the ground can use to help astronauts run their experiments. Also on the agenda is new hardware to take advantage of the coming availability of commercial cargo deliveries to the orbital lab. “We don’t believe we should be spending any time and money trying to make the space station any bigger,” Michael Suffredini, NASA’s station program manager, said. “What we think we should be spending our resources on is making it able to produce more research.” Among the upgrades are high-definition video to improve fluids and combustion research by sharpening the view of how flame and various liquids perform in microgravity, and new instruments to allow some kinds of sample analysis in orbit instead of requiring a return to ground labs in scarce “down-mass” capacity.

Today, down-mass is limited to a small amount that can be carried with returning crews on Russian Soyuz capsules. But the rendezvous and berthing of the first SpaceX Dragon cargo carrier at the station clears the way to bring more samples to and from the station. Beginning on the third Dragon mission, NASA will fly six powered middeck lockers to and from the ISS with SpaceX, Suffredini says. The agency also has approved a redesigned middeck freezer called Polar that will double the capacity of existing middeck freezers. The added down-mass also will permit NASA to maintain 40 mice on the station for experiments, he says, including freezing killed mice after the experiments, returning them to Earth for analysis and delivering more to habitats in the station. If necessary, the number of mice might grow beyond 40, he says. To improve the links between scientists and the crewmembers who serve as what veteran ISS astronaut Mike Fincke called their “hands, eyes, ears and noses” in space, NASA will begin installing communications upgrades this summer that will double downlink bandwidth to 300 mbps and increase uplinks to 25 mbps. The Improved Communication Unit, which will take the place of seven Orbital Replacement Units on the station, also will allow ground commanding via Ku-band and S-band links, and will add two more channels to the air-to-ground voice links. “Today we have two comm channels to talk to the crew,” Suffredini says. “That is always busy. So we’re adding two additional comm channels in order to increase our capability to have multiple payload-specific conversations with multiple crews at one time.”

PRECISION DIE AND STAMPING, INC. Thanks Its Loyal Customers For 48 Years In Business! Today, PD&S occupies more than 100,000 square feet of space across 2 adjacent buildings, and it employs 80 people, half of whom have been with the company for 15 years or more. Ben knows that the talent and experience of his organization is one of the reasons PD&S continues to succeed, while the economy has forced many metal stamping companies to close down over the past 4 years. Dedicated Employees The company is a private ‘S’ Corporation with 8 stockholders. All 8 are active employees at the company. They include the following, pictured below with their respective years in the business: New Product With Quantities Of 500,000 Annually For The Seat Belt Industry
Ben Costabile, founder and CEO of Precision Die and Stamping (PD&S), is proud that his company, in its 48th year of business, has for the past decade experienced consistent business ranging from $16 to 23 million annually, and all based upon word of mouth. The company has never employed an outside sales force. PD&S is coming back from the recent recession and plans for double digit growth this year. Often, we can point to specific events in our lives that we view as inflection points, events that impact where we are today. For Ben, it happened back in Pittsburgh when he was just a young man fresh out of high school. Growing up on a farm, Ben naturally learned how to fix things. His father took a job at a tool and die shop, and then had an injury that kept him from his job for awhile. Ben filled in for his father, and that was the start of his career as a tool and die maker. When the family moved to Los Angeles a few years later, Ben secured a job with his new trade as a tool and die maker. Seven years later, Ben, now married to Nancy Costabile, moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he secured a job at Allied Tool & Die and was quickly promoted to Supervisor. Five years later, Ben was ready to pursue his dream of opening his own tool and die business. Ben says, “My boss offered me a share of the business to stay on at Allied Tool & Die, but my mind was made up.” And so Precision Die and Stamping was formed, with Ben’s savings of $5000, 2 employees, his brothers Ernie and John in a 2000 square foot facility. Ernie remains with the company to this day, and John started up his own company, Tube Specialties, that sits across the street from Precision Die and Stamping. The next inflection point came about just as Ben opened for business. “I contacted Vic Wilson at Honeywell.Vic and I knew each other from my days at Allied Tool & Die. I asked him if I could quote some of his tooling jobs. Vic gave me 3 blueprints, and said I had the work. I hadn’t even given him pricing yet!” Ben credits Vic with helping to get Precision Die and Stamping up and running. A2Z METALWORKER

Learjet,.a.Work.in.Progress Much attention and commentary regarding Bombardier’s aviation interests have focused on the Canadian company’s most ambitious projects, namely its CSeries jetliner and Global 7000 and 8000 ultra-long-range business jets. For good reasons. The 100- to 149-seat CSeries is the largest aircraft ever produced by Bombardier and represents a gamble that’s consuming $3.5 billion of development dollars. It is also the first Bombardier aircraft to threaten the near total market control of Boeing and Airbus. Thus it was no surprise when Pierre Beaudoin, president and CEO of Bombardier Inc., focused almost entirely on the CSeries during a luncheon speech early this year. “The comfortable days of duopolies in commercial and regional aircraft are over,” he said. “Some may believe that re-engined aircraft with a 20-year-old design will be good enough,” he continued, taking a sideswipe at the heavy selling A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX. “We believe that ‘good enough’ is not what operators expect or need.” Two weeks after Beaudoin’s speech, NetJets announced a firm order for 50 Global 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 business jets, with options for another 70. Should all options be exercised, the total retail price would exceed $6.7 billion. It touted the sale as “the largest aircraft purchase agreement in the history of private aviation.”

The first of the ultra-Globals, the 7000, is to enter service in 2016. The development of those top-of-the-line models, along with the Global Vision Flight Deck and the CSeries, consume a good chunk of the $1 billion to $1.5 billion Bombardier Aerospace President and CEO Guy Hachey says his company has been investing annually in R&D. With two such high-profile and high-cost programs under way involving high-ticket airplanes, an OEM could be expected to ease up elsewhere, particularly if involved in the light jet business, a market segment that crashed four years ago and remains depressingly down. However, Bombardier has chosen quite another course and actually appears to be investing more in Learjet than at any time since it acquired the line from its bankrupt owner in 1990. The company is now at work on three Learjet models. There’s the Model 85, launched in 2007 and at 66 ft. long with a double-club cabin, the largest aircraft to bear the Lear marque. In June 2011, the U.S. Air Force announced the conversion of 12 of its Special Operations Command MC-130W Combat Spear aircraft to the Dragon Spear configuration. ATK also developed and produces the 30mm PGU-46/B High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) ammunition used on this gun system. In February 2012, ATK expanded its aviation weapons solution through the development of a Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) pallet and weapons mount that integrates with the GAU-23 cannon. The resulting weapons package will allow medium lift platforms the ability to install the system in less than four hours without airframe modification.

The.Utah.Medical.Device.Industry In 1982, a team of University of Utah researchers, engineers and clinicians successfully implanted the Jarvik 7 artificial heart in a Seattle dentist. This was one of Utah’s notable early successes in the medical device industry. Since then, we’ve built upon it with exponential growth in this arena. But this growth didn’t happen by chance. For years, Utah’s government, education and business sectors have worked together to create the ideal environment for medical device companies. Today, we’re home to more than 600 life science companies and their 26,000 employees. Over 100 of these organizations are medical device companies that make everything from MRI and ultrasound equipment to pacemakers, hearing aids and surgical instruments. In fact, Utah companies currently produce 70 percent of all arterial and vascular access devices utilized worldwide.

The world’s airlines fly almost 20,000 planes today. That number is expected to rise to almost 40,000 by 2031, Boeing said. Boeing and Airbus are both speeding up production to meet a growing order backlog. Airbus, based in France, announced last month that it will begin assembling A320s in Alabama, with deliveries to begin in 2016. Boeing is speeding up production of its competing 737. Boeing said the Asia Pacific region will be the biggest market for new planes, with a potential for 12,030 aircraft there through 2031. The next biggest market is Europe with 7,760, and North America with 7,290. Tinseth said low-cost airlines are stimulating demand for air travel. Those airlines have been especially important in Asia, because they’re making air travel affordable for people who previously didn’t fly. Boeing predicted that global airline traffic will grow 5 percent a year for the next two decades. China’s expanding light rail service will steal some passengers from the airlines, Tinseth said. But the investment in rail as well as new airports should stimulate the economy there and air traffic — and demand for airplanes — will still grow, he said. The company expects half of all airline traffic to begin or end in the Asia Pacific region by 2031, up from 35 percent today.

“As we look to the future, clearly the center of the marketplace will be the Asia-Pacific region,” Tinseth said. Boeing predicted that more than 23,000 of the 34,000 planes that will be sold will be single-aisle planes such as its 737 and the competing Airbus A320. It also predicted sales of 7,950 larger planes such as its new 787. Sales of each would total around $2 trillion, because the bigger planes cost more.

Tinseth said Boeing is aiming to build about as many of the singleaisle jets as Airbus. For the larger wide-body jets, he thinks Boeing can have a larger market share than Airbus does.

The Chicago company reduced its projection for the number of freighter airplanes that will be sold. It says the cargo market remains sluggish. It predicted 940 new freighters would be needed, and another 1,820 passenger planes would be converted to haul freight.

Europe will be another wild card. A deep recession would hurt air travel, and the financial crisis could make it harder for airlines to borrow to buy planes. Tinseth said Boeing expects the European economy to be challenging for this year and next, with “a more normal condition” in 2014. “We do at times suffer through difficult times, but the market responds and rebounds very quickly, and we think the situation we see in Europe will be no exception to that,” he said.

Bloomberg News reports Volvo Car Corp. “is seeking a partner that can help it build vehicles in North America.” Volvo Chief Executive Officer Stefan Jacoby said that cooperation “would ideally be with any carmaker that Volvo agrees to work with on sharing development costs on smaller cars.” Volvo, which Chinese manufacturer Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. “bought from Ford Motor Co. (F) in August 2010 for $1.8 billion, has a target of almost doubling sales to 800,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles by 2020 from 449,255 deliveries in 2011. It plans to invest about $11 billion over the next several years, including construction of two car factories and an engine plant in China.”

Designed to be carried in a pocket or small pack, the robot can be deployed by a dismounted soldier in less than five seconds for vital video and audio reconnaissance, in addition to helping identify hidden enemy combatants, IEDs, as well as the presence of civilians. Featuring an automatic, infrared optical system that provides clear, reconnaissance imagery even in total darkness, the robot can also be lowered into crawl spaces or caves to search for weapons caches and other hidden threats. More than 2,000 robots are currently deployed in Afghanistan, as well as used by the US.
L-3.Announces. First-Ever. Successful. Gun. Firing.of.Next-Generation.M-Code.GPS.Receiver L-3 Communications announced that its Interstate Electronics Corporation business successfully completed multiple test firings of its next-generation Military Code (M-Code) GPS receiver. This milestone represents a significant breakthrough in GPS receiver modernization and validates the unit’s survivability and performance
in extreme, guided munitions environments. L-3’s gun-hardened, next-generation M-Code GPS receiver prototype was fired from a 155mm Howitzer and tracked the M-Prime signal from several modernized satellites to successful target impacts. This achievement represents the first-ever use of the M-Code GPS technology in a weapon system and provides critical validation of the hardware and software performance in a projectile. Importantly, this successful test supports a Congressional mandate to implement M-Code technology on all future and existing U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) platforms and objectives for technical innovations capable of offsetting future threats.

Army.veterans.start.training.for.manufacturing.jobs Forbes, Ken Sweet
Even with an 8.2% unemployment rate, the United States has a massive problem with getting manufacturing positions filled in this country. This problem isn’t going away any time soon, but it looks like the Army is trying to do something about it: Last month, the Army launched a six-week pilot program, in coordination with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, to provide military-to-civilian engineering certification for the tens of thousands of servicemen/women who will be exiting the Army over the coming years as the U.S. winds down operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s part of a program that the White House announced last month to help (in part) address two major problems this country faces: a lack of a skilled work force to fill high-paying manufacturing jobs, and a disproportionately high unemployment rate for U.S. veterans.

CEOs and business owners often talk about how veterans make ideal employees: they’re disciplined, knowledgeable, work well in team environments and often have creative or unique skills to bring to a business. But post-9/11 veterans suffer from an on-average unemployment rate of 9.5%, compared the civilian unemployment rate of 8.2%. It translates into roughly 200,000 young post-9/11 servicemen/women, who often did multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan learning valuable skills, but somehow are unable to find jobs that match their skill sets. It isn’t like these men and women don’t have the knowledge or skills required. On top of what they learned in the military, nearly 74% of all post-9/11 veterans have some post-high school training, according to the BLS. Fortunately the overall veteran unemployment rate is below the national average: 7.4%. It’s the younger post-9/11 members that bring that unemployment rate up.

Boeing.to.arm.Embraer’s.Super.Tucano.fighter Brazil’s Embraer is announcing plans for Boeing Co to supply a new weapons system for its light attack fighter, strengthening its offer in a fiercely contested bid for a U.S. Air Force contract in Afghanistan.
Part Density.
Need we say more?
The new weapons system will offer longer-range “smart” bombs guided by laser and GPS, Embraer said. With the Boeing weapons system on its Super Tucano fighter, Embraer aims to bolster its bid for a $355 million Air Force contract. The contract is for 20 light air support planes for the Afghan military’s counterinsurgency missions. Embraer and privately held partner Sierra Nevada won the contract in a prior round of bidding that the Air Force scrapped earlier this year after a lawsuit by rival Hawker Beechcraft. An Embraer spokesman said the company’s latest bid last month included the Boeing weapons system. Boeing’s new role as subcontractor on the Super Tucano reinforces growing ties between the U.S. and Brazilian aerospace and defense industries. The companies announced in June that they would collaborate on some aspects of developing Embraer’s KC-390 military transport and refueling jet. Boeing has also been working for years to land a Brazilian jet fighter contract, worth an initial $4 billion, for its F-18 Super Hornet.

On the heels of the Great Recession and the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs, a growing number of customers are demanding products that support the US economy. 3-D.Printing.Poised.To.Remake.Manufacturing The Wall Street Journal reported on 3-D printing, also known as additive manufacturing. Michael Hayes, a design engineer at Boeing, said should be able to make an airplane wing without cutting or bending any metal. Although additive manufacturing, has been around for a quarter of a century, the technology is mainly used for making models, prototypes and smaller products, such as hearing aids and hip implants. Now, the Journal reported, large manufacturers including Boeing and Honeywell Inc. are exploring ways to use the technology to make bigger pieces in higher volumes. A2Z METALWORKER
