Editors Corner “Breaking up is hard to do.” Neil Sedaka No matter whether we’re talking about a friend, a loved one, or a customer, breaking up is hard to do. And as individuals, we tend to fear change. Our customers, and the organizations they represent, also are creatures of habit that resist change. New supplier selection is not a decision that should be made without careful deliberation. Perhaps to their detriment, some companies never look for new suppliers, while occasionally there are companies who change suppliers far too frequently (also to their detriment). There is always a cost incurred to change suppliers. Ideally, the cost is more than offset by a reduction in price, better quality, and/or superior delivery. Because of the risk of changing from a long-term supplier, many purchasing professionals will not make the change unless there is an estimated savings of 10% or more. In the end, as a supplier, you must create the ‘highest value for the service spend’, which is not the same as the lowest price. Many suppliers believe that getting the lowest price is the most compelling reason for customers to change suppliers, but ‘all things being equal’, this is rarely the case. Further, if you get trapped into the ‘lowest price game’, you will lose, as there is always someone willing to bid lower than you. There are reasons why a business must change out a supplier, and invariably these reasons can all be summed up by a company’s need ‘to solve a problem’. Your long-term supplier, once outstanding on such metrics as price, quality, and on-time delivery, now demonstrates a pattern of consistently poor performance on one or more of these metrics. If, while working with them to resolve these issues, they continue to underperform, it is time to move on.You simply cannot risk your business and reputation due to one of your supplier’s nonperformance. Let’s look at the supplier/customer relationship from another perspective, where as a supplier, you are pursuing a new customer. Knowing that innately people don’t like change, there are some things you can do to become one of their suppliers. We mentioned that companies change suppliers when they have to solve a problem. As a potential new supplier, come to them from this perspective. Seek the business impact connected to the customer’s service problem, and share in your proposal how you will resolve this issue.

Don’t stop there. Once you demonstrate how and why you can solve their business problem, help them understand how you can improve their business.

Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news and to supply a viable vendor source for the industry.

Take a divisional approach, and ask your customer for just a portion of their production, while retaining their current supplier. This dual sourcing offers your new customer the opportunity to try you out. Should you perform better than their current supplier, you have an excellent opportunity to increase your share of their business over time.

Circulation:The A2Z Manufacturing has compiled and maintains a master list of approximately 6500 people in the Rocky Mountain states actively engaged in the Precision Manufacturing Industry. It has an estimated pass on readership of more than 18,000 people.

I am personally grateful for those individuals in my professional life that helped to create an environment where I had to solve a problem, in essence, I had to leave. In the case of my last assignment in the corporate world, my boss did just that. I left the company to purchase this magazine, and it was the best business decision I have made in my career.Thank you, previous boss, for helping me to move on. Sometimes change is necessary and beneficial!

Advertising Rates, deadlines and mechanical requirements furnished upon request or you can go to www.azManufacturing.com.

In closing, foster an environment where superior quality and on-time delivery is the norm. Don’t give your customers a reason to switch out suppliers. And if you are pursuing new customers, don’t just help them to solve a problem — be a conduit to their improved business. Until next issue, I wish you the best and God Bless our Troops!

I was recently asked what is the core mission of the Northern Utah NTMA chapter. The very first thing that came to mind is workforce development. It’s one of those ‘problems’ that keeps me up at night. No doubt that finding the next generation of skilled machinists is a challenge that takes a high priority on the list of any machine/manufacturing shop. be employed. Far behind us is the great depression where it was said that unemployment reached 80% in Detroit. Today the US unemployment rate is 3.7%. In Utah, it is currently at 3.0%. Add to the challenge is the misperception that machine shop work is dirty, low paying and tedious work.

NTMA understands that finding and employing young, skilled workers is the lifeblood of our industry. In supporting the priority of workforce development we have many tools that the NTMA has developed including the National Robotics League (NRL), NTMA-U (online training modules), Scholarships and National Apprentice Program. Our chapter has developed its own apprentice programMachineUtah.org. Our chapter invites you to support and get involved in the many opportunities to help find the next generation of American manufacturers and machinist. It will make a difference building a bright future for America.

Targeted Business Tax Credit Encourages Investment In Utah’s Rural Communities The Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) encourages businesses to apply for the Targeted Business Tax Credit (TBTC). “The Targeted Business Tax Credit is one of the tools in the toolbox that is largely underutilized. We are committed to changing that,” said Ginger Chinn, GOED managing director of urban and rural business services. The TBTC program encourages local businesses to make investments in rural communities. Businesses with projects that meet established criteria may receive up to $100,000 in a refundable tax credit. The total available for all TBTC projects in 2019 is $300,000. The application and certification processes are completed and awarded through GOED. The tax credit reimbursement is issued through the Utah State Tax Commission for businesses that meet benchmarks and new-hire goals. The tax credit can be collected regardless of whether or not the business has a state tax liability. Interested businesses should apply for TBTC through GOED from Jan. 1 through Feb. 1, 2019.To learn more about the program, and see if your business qualifies, visit business.utah.gov/rural.

Community College of Denver Becomes First ATP of HEIDENHAIN Controls in North America HEIDENHAIN is proud to announce Community College of Denver’s (CCD) Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) as the first HEIDENHAIN authorized training partner (ATP) focusing on its CNC controls in North America. Here, both students and industry stakeholders alike can now access and train on the latest in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment. To become a HEIDENHAIN ATP, CCD staff completed several rounds of advanced training on the 5-Axis HEIDENHAINTNC machine controls and successfully passed an extensive exam. “We are thrilled to be able to contribute to domestic manufacturing with these advanced capabilities,” said Matthew Sweeney, AMC Director. “It’s exciting to see what can now be done just by knowing what buttons to push on these conversational and effective HEIDENHAIN controls. And we are just scratching the surface of what these HEIDENHAIN controllers can do. Even the most experienced machinist can benefit from these advanced capabilities.” HEIDENHAIN’s TNC Business Development Manager Gisbert Ledvon explained that “HEIDENHAIN has been in a relationship with CCD and their Advanced Manufacturing Center in Colorado since 2015, including participating in multiple joint workshops held at CCD for 5-axis machining covering theoretical and practical parts.” There are multiple HEIDENHAIN TNC controls in operation at the AMC, A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain•

Hostetter noted that their research showed them that the high-end precision shops in the region were at full capacity. In most cases it was six to eight weeks before a customer could expect to get a project on a machine. That, coupled with customers requesting quick-turn service, drove this high-six-figure purchase. The new machine is known for its stability, is made from a single casting, and includes advanced software and 60 sensors that monitor its operations. Digital software provides the capability to program complex machining cycles at a much faster rate. Table tilt gives simultaneous 5-axis capability, rather than 4+1. Though the DMU 95 monoBLOCK handles all materials and super alloys, Fauston will use it for aluminum and titanium parts that require no additional operations other than heat treating. “For Faustson, there is no learning curve on this machine,” said Andre Rusconi of DMG MORI. “They’re progressive and were one of the first in the region to add simultaneous 5-axis capability back in the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

late 1990s. They have a very high skill set and will get maximum use and value out of this purchase. They have five other machines with the same control system, so they hit the ground running. Those that don’t know the system have a six- to 12-month learning curve to understand the cutting and turning strategies. Given the economy, the customer demand, the low unemployment rate, equipment like this with a lot of automation capabilities is a wise investment.” Scheduling the machine and making parts this way enables Faustson to deliver jobs 80% faster and get customers 80% BOM (Bill of Materials). That time savings gives Faustson customers the flexibility handle the final 20% of the part-complete process in whatever way they choose and still come out ahead in terms of time to a completed part. The applications for this machine span the multiple industries Faustson serves, including engineering, medical, and automotive. The increased capabilities it enables allow Faustson to expand their client base and bring additional economic activity to Denver and Colorado. Faustson, a worldwide leader in the machining industry, provides services for clients worldwide in the medical, aerospace, aeronautics, defense, semiconductor and other industries. Faustson has been at the forefront of the manufacturing industry since 1982, continuing a tradition of pioneering the newest technology and pushing its limits. An Objective Introductory Look At Buying 5 Axis Equipment... With A Few Shameless Plugs From J.M. Grisley and Doosan Through the last few decades, more machine tool builders have developed their own 5 axis machining equipment. This has created a more competitive market price and made the purchase of this type of equipment more affordable. As a general rule, 5-axis equipment has gotten smaller in size due to a focus on single part flow resulting in a smaller work envelope being needed. Approximately 90% of all machined parts will fit in a six (6) inch cube. Utilizing a 5-axis platform, these parts will only require two operations to be machined completely, which is a reduction in work holding and part handling. Here at J.M. Grisley we continue to have increased interest in machine shops adding 5 axis machines to their capabilities. In part one of our 5 axis machine installments, we are going to start at the basics of what to consider when purchasing a 5-axis vertical machining center. While this will be more focused on the vertical platform, many of the components discussed will apply to any 5 Axis equipment you are considering.

STRUCTURE Structure of a 5 axis machine is critical to being able to produce quality parts. When machining in 5 axis, you quickly begin compounding the inherit inaccuracies in a machine tool. This is true in all machine tools but becomes exacerbated as more axes are involved in the machining process. When looking at the structure of vertical 5 axis machines, the key features we look at are: √ Is the trunnion supported? Unsupported trunnions offer the advantage of being open and able to accommodate larger parts but can flex under cutting loads. Supported trunnions give a more robust cutting dynamic but typically have smaller work envelopes. √ When a trunnion is unsupported, we recommend looking at the bearing on the cantilevered axis. It should be large enough to provide stability in heavy cutting applications. Unlike a 3-axis machine, on a 5-axis In almost all cases we platform, tool engagement can prefer a supported be optimized to remove material trunnion as show on the at a more consistent rate. This Doosan DVF 5000. also leads to more consistent A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

pressure being applied to an unsupported trunnion. Bearing size matters! √ Drive systems of the rotary axis. The main argument here is between direct drive versus worm gear. Worm gear drive systems give a mechanical contact as well as solid positional breaking and excel in heavy cutting applications, while direct drive can position faster and on some models, can give turning capabilities. √ How is the spindle integrated? While this is a gross over simplification of what is currently available, here are 3 main ways builders incorporate spindles in the 5 axis platform. Classic C-frame design, like a typical 3 axis machining center, is often seen of 4+1 machines. These will be lower cost and more geared to saving set ups. Simple, robust, and rigid, this type of machine will fit into and benefit almost all shops. Second, you have a gantry style where the spindle is supported from theY axis above the primary machine casting. This generally lends itself well to larger parts that require a good amount of clearance around the part for longer or larger diameter tooling. Ram style machines are very regularly coupled with c-axis turning applications. As the name implies, the spindle is mounted on an extendable ram that typically travels along one of the linear axis via a traveling column. Frequent integration with full c-axis turning can add flexibility through utilizing single point tooling as well. What will work for your shop will be highly dependent on your parts. We recommend talking with knowledgeable sales people to determine which combination of the structural platform will best fit your needs. Don’t be afraid to look at multiple platforms and talk to a few different sales people — contrary to popular belief, a good machine tool salesman can be an invaluable resource. In the end, it is our job to stay on top of industry trends and salespeople are inherently exposed to a multitude of manufacturing strategies.

CONTROL FEATURES/CONTROLLABLE AXIS When deciding on a 5 Axis machine, you will see that many machines referred to as 5 Axis are in actuality 4+1. This means that you can control 4 axes simultaneously and position the 5th. Estimates are that 95% of all work on 5 axis machines is 4 +1; more accurately designated as 5 sided machining. Machines with 4+1 functionality work, but full 5 axis can be a benefit in how you approach machining different parts.

This decision can really come down to budget. Getting into a 4+1 machine typically has a lower introductory price, but will normally have slightly decreased performance compared to a full 5 axis machine. Another consideration in 5 axis machining is the control’s capabilities in understanding tool Center point. When programming with tool center point, you are actually programming to the known tip of the actual tool.Tool center point solves the problem of local tool gouging. Since the CNC knows the profile of the workpiece surface, it can coordinate all of the axes to keep the tool tip in precise contact with the surface when moving between points. Kinematic compensation software is also an important function on the control. It is designed to make extremely small adjustments to the rotary axes centerlines to minimize the minute geometric errors that can occur in complex multi axis machining. Efficiently being able to calibrate your machine keeps it running in step with how your CAM package posts code. Z axis thermal compensation is also a feature that should be considered with 5 axis machining centers as it ensures precision over long cycle times.

OPTIONS

Single point turning on a 5 axis platform increases flexibility, productivity and can further reduce part set up time as shown on the Doosan SMX 3100ST multitasking turning center. automation to be less expensive and more flexible. Tool holders are going to become more critical and as spindle speeds are typically faster on the 5 axis platform, heat shrink is a good fit. The cost of heat shrink has continued to decrease and is now very affordable. Dual contact holders also assist in reducing pull back on V-taper geometry giving more repeatable results at the tool tip for precision work.

WORK HOLDING

Complex geometry is more accessible with tool center point programming as shown on the Doosan Horizontal 5 Axis DHF 8000. As with any other machining centers, you have the traditional options to consider, such as high pressure coolant systems, chip evacuation, etc. One option that is essential on 5 axis machines is probing. First, probing allows for much faster set up (which is one of your primary reasons to add a 5 axis machine). Second, coupled with the kinematic compensation, it allows you to actively adjust the kinematics of the machine quickly and accurately. As the builders began developing 5 axis machine tools, they have maintained automation as a focus. The increased adoption of 5 axis machining has coincided with the rise in automation. Therefore, builders developed machines with automation in mind. This has allowed

This is where the fun begins and probably the reason you are considering a 5 axis machining center. There are two major advantages for the work holding on a 5 axis machining center. The 1st is part accessibility. The work holding fixtures will allow machining of 5 sides of a component in one work holding plus any angle desired. The parts can be machined with two operations max. The 2nd reason is the reduction in cost for the work holding. Since you can now hit 5 sides of the part per setup, you typically only need one work holding system. This eliminates the need for multiple vice set ups, progressive fixtures or multisided tombstones. As the cost can be substantial for the amount of traditional work holding needed to lay out multipipe fixtures, spending a little extra on a system for your 5 axis can be easily justified. There are a multitude of options for 5 Axis work holding — so much so we are considering doing an entire section on such. In the meantime if you have questions about 5 Axis work holding, please reach out to us. We would be happy to walk you through options and find which solution best fits your applications. subscription based software model, so no more large upfront costs. With Autodesk CAD/CAM systems starting at $500 a year (or for about the same as a typical yearly maintenance), you can upgrade you system to the leader in the manufacturing software technologies.

QUALITY AND PART FLOW The DHF 8000 5 Axis Horizontal Machining center is an example of Doosan’s dedication to innovation and a continued effort to produce the highest quality, reliable and lowest cost of ownership machines in the world. Reductions in fixturing requirements also leads to less work in progress. Work and inventory waiting for something to do is reduced to a single second operation in most instances. This does not necessarily increase the speed at which parts flow through the shop but it makes that flow more efficient. Fewer setups also makes predicting when a part run will be completed far more accurate.

SOFTWARE

Programming software is readily available for all levels of programming. No longer is it necessary to purchase expensive CAD/CAM software to program 5 axis machines.Today less expensive software such as Fusion 360 and Delcam have the capability to program 5 axis parts. Today’s manufacturing engineers and programmers are of a new breed and a different set of talents and tools.Though, some of the more advanced CAD/CAM systems such as PowerMILL will have more to offer such as machining strategies for trocodial milling and tool tilting and referencing during simulation. Not only can it generate the cutting feeds and speeds, it makes the recommendations for axial and radial depths of cuts. It generates models of the tools that are used for the simulation of the part programs. The simulation software has the capability to identify “G” code and Macro programming errors, machining that is out of tolerance and false cuts due to not clearing a cutter prior to repositioning the tool to another position. The result is faster cycle times and excellent surface finish. The world of CAD/CAM systems is shifting and in partnership with the Autodesk Suite, we are the leader in the West for application support. The Autodesk line up includes Fusion 360, Delcam, and PowerMILL. As with most software providers, the machining world is transitioning to a A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

This part of the savings is one that is almost overlooked. The cost of inspection is greatly reduced because only a few parts have to be inspected and maintained in production. You are not tying up a CMM and operator with parts due to dozens of fixture locations that must be inspected for program prove out and also, during production. Fewer parts require monitoring.

robust pace of hiring will lead firms to ramp back up production.” In recent weeks, financial markets have plunged amid concerns that the U.S. could be in a recession by 2020. The Dow suffered its worst December since the middle of the Depression in 1931. China, the world’s second-largest economy, is also mired in a slowdown, its consumers losing much of their appetite for real estate, iPhones, Ford vehicles and jewelry from Tiffany & Co.

US Employers Went On A Surprising Hiring Spree In December U.S. employers went on a hiring spree in December, adding a surprising 312,000 jobs and providing a dose of reassurance about the economy after a turbulent few months on Wall Street. The job gains reported in January by the Labor Department came despite a trade war with China, a global slowdown and a partial government shutdown. The nation’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.9 percent last month, but that, too, was considered a positive sign, reflecting an increase in Americans beginning to look for work. And average hourly pay improved 3.2 percent from a year ago. Stocks surged on the news, along with word that the U.S. and China will hold trade talks next week and comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell that the Fed will be flexible in judging whether to raise interest rates further. The Dow Jones industrial average shot up 747 points, or 3.3 percent. The torrid hiring in December far outstripped the 180,000 jobs investors had been anticipating and could help ease fears that the economy’s expansion — now in the middle of its 10th year — may be coming to an end. “The labor market is very strong even though the economy appears to be slowing,” said Eric Winograd, senior U.S. economist at the investment management firm AllianceBernstein. “Those two things cannot coexist for very long. Either weakening demand will lead firms to dial back the pace of hiring or the A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The strong job growth suggests employers believe U.S. consumer spending will stay robust. Health care and education added 82,000 jobs last month, the largest jump in nearly nine years. Restaurants and drinking places posted a net gain of 40,700 jobs. Builders added 38,000 construction jobs, while manufacturers increased their payrolls by 32,000 workers. Businesses are still searching for more workers. Fresh Coat Painters, based in Cincinnati, plans to nearly double the 300 employees who paint homes and businesses as it expands this year across this country. The franchiser is also launching an apprenticeship program to attract workers, in addition to providing higher pay and benefits. Tara Riley, president of Fresh Coat, said that franchise owners are having to actively search for workers instead of simply posting ads. “We realized it was a mindset change: You have to be recruiting, rather than hiring,” Riley said. Still, Kevin Hassett, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, cautioned on Thursday that the jobs report for January could be weak if the shutdown continues. Job

The army requires 150 UH-Xs to be built over 20 years to replace Bell UH-1Js, also built by Subaru, then called Fuji Heavy Industries. The last of those was completed in 2007, though the single-engine design dates to the 1950s.

Utah Soars High on Technology and Science Index The 2018 Milken Technology and Science Index report was released last month, and Utah has a lot to smile about. The state earned fifth

place honors, improving its ranking from eighth place in 2016. The report rates states’ performance in three categories: high-tech innovation, education and investment. The state’s impressive ranking is mainly due to increased jobs in the high-tech sector and the number of university science and technology graduates. Val Hale, executive director of Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development, credits the state’s universities and Silicon Slopes’ tech boom for those high numbers.

“Were it not for our universities, our economy would not be where it is now,” Hale said. “When people ask me why our economy is doing well, I point to Utah’s universities.” The index looks at five different areas to rank U.S. states including research and development inputs, capital and entrepreneurial infrastructure, human capital investment, technology and science workforce, and technology concentration and dynamism. “We’re excited to see Utah recognized as a leader in STEM talent development. The Utah STEM Action Center represents an investment by the state to continue to build student interest and success in STEM-related education and careers,” said Tamara Goetz, STEM Action Center executive director. The Milken Technology and Science Index draws on data from government and private sources dating from 2015 to 2017, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the National Science Foundation, the Small Business Administration, the American Community Survey and Moody’s Analytics. The entire index can be viewed on the Milken Institute’s website.

Aerospace Market Outlook: The Market That Continues To Thrive Expectations for the year remain on target for the overall commercial aircraft market to grow at 3.5% annually compared to 2.1% in 2017. North America aerospace demand is expected to be up 4.3% year over year. Lagging aircraft retirement and the need for additional shop visits for older aircraft are driving the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market to nearly $72 billion this year as airliner and aeroengine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) ramp up production for the growing, multi-year backlog. Market analyst Richard Aboulafia, vice president of Teal Group, says the outlook for the aircraft industry is the best it has been in decades. Kevin Michaels, managing director at AeroDynamic Advisory, notes aircraft production for 2017 was about $164 billion, and with a 5.8% CAGR for the next 4 years will lead to a market value of about $218 billion.

For Manufacturers, the Devil is in the Details on Steel, Aluminum Tariffs U.S. manufacturing executives concerned about recently announced steel and aluminum tariffs may yet be able to take action to minimize the impact these trade actions could have on their bottom line. President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on imported steel at 25% and aluminum imports at 10% that go into effect after March 23. Trump has initially exempted Mexico

and Canada from the tariffs as Washington seeks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). However, if those NAFTA exemptions are made permanent, the tariffs on products from other countries may be hiked above 25%, insiders say. The Trump administration wants to reduce the U.S. trade deficit and to boost aluminum production, now below 50% of capacity, to above 80% and to boost steel production to a similar level from about 70% of capacity utilization today. However, even in the first few days after the tariffs were announced on March, changes and exemptions have been made. That suggests that much of the finer details of the tariffs will remain in flux and could be changed before March 23, and even beyond as industry players argue for their interests. As a result, businesses that import steel and aluminum, from automakers to canning companies, should take some immediate steps to ensure the best outcome. ---Manufacturing executives should undertake a systematic supply-chain review. Many companies that buy from U.S. wholesalers may think they’re purchasing domestic steel or aluminum when in fact that inventory is sourced overseas and just cut, shaped and delivered by a U.S. distributor. And, even if the country where the materials are sourced is subject to tariffs, not all types of these metals are impacted. To know exactly what will be taxed, executives should review HarmonizedTariff Schedule codes —10-digit identifiers that specify the precise type of steel and aluminum being taxed. Right now, that’s a moving target, with fewer steel products than aluminum materials listed. For example, certain grades of stainless

steel are exempted. --If a company learns that the steel or aluminum it uses will be taxed, it should quickly explore other options. For some, the simplest move may be to source U.S.-manufactured materials instead of imported metals. However, even if U.S. steel can be sourced, those prices will rise once the tariffs take effect, reflecting the shift to the supply-demand curve. --Companies can also seek exemptions if the material they want to import can’t be sourced at a reasonable cost domestically, or if there is a national security interest for the exemption. The U.S. Commerce Department has yet to announce the precise procedure for seeking exemptions. However, such applications are typically onerous, so many middle-market companies may need assistance from their trade advisors or lawyers. Alternatively, companies could request their customs broker to seek an exemption. History suggests the tariffs could be short-lived. In 2002, the Bush administration put a 30% tariff on imported steel, but scrapped the penalty 20 months later after Europe and others threatened retaliation. Experts say the lesson from that episode is that while protectionism helps producers, it harms manufacturers that buy steel. While all this plays out, manufacturers should pay attention and stay close to developments to ensure that any negative impact these tariffs have on their bottom line is minimized.Lou Longo is the international consulting practice leader at Plante Moran.

President’s Corner Message Bry Davis, NUNTMA President NEW YEAR-WHAT WILL IT BRING?? So long 2018 and hello 2019. 2018 is now history except for a few loose ends like taxes. Fortunately, we have a few months to figure out how much we owe Uncle Sam. The rules for 2018 changed after Congress passed the new tax law in December 2017. Changes like new corporate tax rate is lower and permanent, corporate AMT is gone, pass-through business (S-corporations) can qualify for big deduction and some business deductions are gone or reduced. It will take some time consulting with your tax accountant to figure it all out which is time well spent. Business strategy can help save dollars that we can all use in reinvesting in machines and tooling that increase productivity and efficiency. Unchanged (for at least this year) is the R & D Tax Credit which was created to help businesses to keep pace with the rapid changes in technology and process improvement. Economic forecasts are a mixed bag and that has certainly played out in the last month. The NTMA, as well as our chapter, wants to provide shops with current information that can help you plan for a great new year. Please join us for our annual CPA Tax presentation by Ryan Rees, Hartle & Rees, LLC. on January 17. Look forward to seeing you there. Wishing everyone a happy and successful new year!

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Boeing Unveils Refined Truss-Braced-Wing Airliner Concept Boeing has unveiled a refined design for itsTransonicTruss-BracedWing (TTBW) ultra-efficient airliner concept. The 737-class aircraft, with a 170-ft.-span lowdrag wing, is designed to fly at Mach 0.8, a typical airliner cruise speed and faster than previous versions of the design. The TTBW concept was originally developed in 2010 under the Boeing and NASA Subsonic Ultra Green Aircraft Research (SUGAR) program to study new configurations for ultra-efficient airliners that could enter service in the 2035 time frame. The model of the revised TTBW configuration was unveiled Jan. 8 at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics SciTech conference in San Diego. Boeing estimates the TTBW has an 8% fuel-burn advantage over a conventional configuration with cantilevered wing. The TTBW configuration has a high-aspect-ratio wing to minimize induced drag in the cruise. The long, thin wing is braced by trusses—similar to the Hurel-Dubois designs of the 1950s—that minimize the weight penalty of the longer span. In the SUGAR study, the aircraft was designed for a reduced cruise speed on Mach 0.75 to minimize fuel consumption. Under NASA contract, Boeing has optimized the truss design and increased wing sweep to enable the aircraft to fly at Mach 0.8, the speed at

which today’s airliners typically cruise.Artist’s concepts of the refinedTTBW design released by Boeing show the increased sweep of the high-set wing and the revised design of the truss. The main member has increased chord at the fuselage, forward sweep and tapers toward the junction with the wing. The junction with the fuselage has been moved back and the main truss now angles up to meet the wing at some distance from the fuselage, presumably to reduce aerodynamic interference. There is a small jury member connecting the truss to the wing close to its junction with the wing. The long-span wing folds just outboard of the truss junctions to enable the TTBW to use the same airport gates as a 737, which has a wing span of almost 118 ft. The aircraft pictured appears to be conventionally powered, with turbofans mounted under the wing, but NASA is studying versions of theTTBW concept with hybrid-electric propulsion. These have electric motors integrated into the turbine engines. An electric-powered ducted thruster on the tail ingests the fuselage boundary layer and reenergizes the wake, reducing drag and energy consumption. The forward and aft fans are located on pivoting struts close to the fuselage, and the midset is attached at the tips of a centrally mounted stub wing. The single-rotor fans, each consisting of four blades and measuring 8 ft. in diameter, are housed on hubs supported within the duct by guide vanes. In helicopter mode, the ducts are tilted horizontally to generate vertical thrust, and in aircraft mode they tilt vertically to provide forward thrust. The ducts are passive lift systems and generate the vast majority of lift in airplane mode, along with the wings in the center,” Drennan says. The duct shape generates lift regardless of what is spinning inside of it in airplane mode.”

A year after teasing the fledgling electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) industry with a mockup of a futuristic air taxi cabin, rotary-wing giant Bell has unveiled the first major configuration details of its Nexus on-demand urban air mobility (UAM) concept.

A Safran turbine engine is housed on the upper aft fuselage and, along with batteries, provides energy for the vehicle’s hybrid-electric propulsion system. The engine exhaust is ducted aft between the twin vertical stabilizers of the aircraft’s Pi tail.

Revealed at the Consumer Technology Association’s CES 2019 show in Las Vegas, Bell’s Nexus is distinguished by six tilting ducted fans and sized to carry four passengers and a pilot. Powered by a hybrid-electric propulsion system incorporating batteries and an unspecified Safran turbine engine, the Nexus is designed to “safely and efficiently redefine air travel,” says Bell’s executive vice president for technology and innovation, Michael Thacker.

A hybrid-electric propulsion system was adopted for greater mission flexibility, says Kyle Heironimous, propulsion lead engineer for Nexus. “That does not mean we’ve closed the door on future technologies,” he notes, “so we are always keeping our eyes on the status of batteries, fuel cells and future energy storage, and a lot of technologies that we are developing for hybrid systems including electrical machines, motors, generators and power electronics.”

As one of five companies teamed with Uber to develop urban air taxi demonstration vehicles for trials in Dallas and Los Angeles as early as 2020, Bell is also unveiling the Nexus as part of a broader strategy aimed at applications beyond air taxis, including logistics and military missions. While the idea of air taxis is not new, Thacker says: “What is new is the emergence of technologies that enable quiet, safe, efficient, affordable urban air mobility operations at scale using small, heavily automated electric and hybrid-elec-

As well as providing the turbine engine, Safran will be responsible for development of the series hybrid-electric propulsion system and drive system. The company, which began ground runs of a 100-kW hybrid-electric distributed propulsion system in mid-2018 at its Pau-Pyrenees test site in France, also recently unveiled the first of a newly developed family of electric motors up to 500 kW, and is providing a modified version of its Ardiden 3 turboshaft to provide

electrical power on the Boeing-backed Zunum 12-seater ZA10 hybrid-powered aircraft. Logan, Utah-based Electric Power Systems (EPS), which led development of the lithium-ion battery pack for NASA’s X-57 Maxwell electric propulsion demonstrator, will provide the energy storage system, including batteries, power electronics, thermal management and battery management. “Batteries are always a trade between high power with low energy or high energy with low power,” says Heironimous. “But a VTOL mission needs both, which means it is a heavy battery. Only within the past couple of years have we reached the point where batteries are reaching the energy and power densities necessary to enable electric and hybrid eVTOL.” The advanced EPS battery system makes the hybrid approach feasible and enabled Bell to optimize the size of the generator and turbine. “Using the battery to shave off the peak power demands of the mission allows us to size a smaller turbine, which is more efficient and lighter,” says Heironimous. The Nexus will have a Thales-developed fly-by-wire flight control system (FCS) that will be “different to anything Bell has done before in many ways,” says flight controls lead engineer Jeff Epp. The flight control system will be distributed, with centralized flight control computers connecting to remote electronics and motor controllers. For the first time on a Bell aircraft, primary flight control surfaces will be moved by all-electric actuators rather than conventional hydraulic systems. The electromechanical actuators and motor controllers will be provided by Moog. The flight control system will also work closely with the autonomous vehicle management computer (VMC), which will be developed by Garmin. The VMC is “the brain of the aircraft,” says Nexus avionics lead Frankie Mazzei. For power management, the VMC will take information from the battery and relay it to the engine, while for navigation it will be able to take ground station commands and relay those to the FCS. “Today, that is all managed by the pilot,” says Mazzei. “The goal of the VMC at Bell is to be the ultimate pilot assistant, enhance situational awareness, reduce workload and increase safety. The end goal is to be fully autonomous.”

Bell is reluctant to detail the development schedule, but Drennan says the program is currently “somewhere between preliminary and critical design reviews.” Entry into service is targeted at the mid-2020s, with demonstrators and prototypes “phased in between now and then,” he says, adding that the first vehicles will be fully autonomous to “unlock speed in the schedule” and enable the early potential for an optionally piloted aircraft. The route to certification is undecided but “could come out of Part 23,” Drennan says. Source: Aviation Week & Space Technology

Northrup Grumman Logan Adds Capabilities To Its Machine Shop With Their Milltronics MB20 Tucked away on the slopes of the Bear River Mountains in Northern Utah is a town called Logan. The vibrant, highly educated town, about 82 miles north of Salt Lake City, is home to Utah State University. It is also home to an R&D optics test center with about a dozen employees in a facility that resides within the state university innovation campus. In this facility, the employees returned from the holidays and just turned in their badges for new ones, this time with the name ‘NGC’, short for Northrup Grumman Corporation. NGC Logan team members are no strangers to transition; in fact nearly half have been employed by multiple employers without actually changing jobs. First, there was a small business called Space Systems Engineering that merged with another small company called Mission Research. The merged entity was purchased by ATK Space Systems, and operated under the name ATK Mission Research. In 2015, this entity became part of Orbital/ATK, and in 2018, through yet another acquisition, they became employees of yet another industry giant. Today, this largely intact core team in Logan is employed by Northrup Grumman Corporation, ranked #118 in Fortune 500 companies for 2018. NGC Logan manufactures a wide variety of optical sensors, test and evaluation systems, and cryogenic optics and components for customers in the aerospace and defense industries. In fact, when the business was a small private entity, its customers included many of the same Fortune 500 customers it supports today. Craig Ward, 28 year veteran of the company, says, “In the early years, Northrup Grumman was one of our large customers; it’s ironic that today we are owned by them.” Still NGC Logan continues to support many customers outside of Northrup Grumman; their customers span the United States, and even a small amount of international exposure. Craig says, “Our customers come

to us to help solve a variety of complex electro-optical problems.” He adds that while most of NGC Logan’s instruments are ground-based test equipment for space rated sensors, they even have some products that find application on space borne payloads. Scott Anderson, Journeyman machinist, says, “We support about 50 different projects for a dozen or so customers in a given year, and nearly all of our projects are R&D related. This means when we are manufacturing a part or complete An NGC Logan Cryogenic assembly for a client, it is typically in Stepper Motor volumes of 1 or 2.” He adds that they do make a few items that deliver as a finished product in much larger quantities for a number of their customers, one such device is a stepper motor that operates in a vacuum at cryogenic temperatures.

A Mini-Cryogenic Gas Actuated Valve Used To Control Liquid Helium

Dave Higham, long-term employee who manages NGC Logan, says, “Our test instrumentation includes both point source and dynamic scene projection systems which utilize a number of different optical forms including collimation projection optics, afocal relays and optical reimagers.” He continued, “Our technologies span both reflective and refractive/diffractive optics that can be used at room temperature down to cryogenic temperatures. These optics coupled with our other opto-mechanical systems allow us to provide our customers an environment where they can perform relative or absolute calibrations for their sensors under test.”

The NGC Machine Shop NGC Logan has its own machine shop, and most machining, welding and assembly is done in-house. Craig says, “I never cease to be amazed by the what our guys can manufacture.” Scott adds, “We can pretty much do everything in-house, but have in the past outsourced machining of larger parts.” Scott says that the NGC Logan machine shop has a number of older machines, and for the most part, these machines work well in an R&D environment. “Last year, we were funded to purchase a new

machine - a CNC mill”, he says. The team evaluated different options for a CNC mill designed for tool room applications. Scott says, “We purchased the Milltronics MB20 3 Axis Quill Head Bed Mill last August, from the local dealer, Smith Machinery, and it is phenomenal for our requirements. We needed a much larger travel than what our current machines offered, and the MB20 offers travel of 40” x 20” x 24”. We just machined a 4’ square plate on the MB20, and we couldn’t have done this with our older machines.” He added, “There are so many reasons why we think the Milltronics is outstanding: •The Milltronics control is awesome — it is so intuitive and user friendly. Everyone in the shop wants to run it, so I don’t get near as much time on it as I would like. • We love the removable table chip guard: It is designed to allow the machinist to easily remove the guarding. This feature offers the best solution to chip and coolant containment in normal working conditions, and when an oversized work piece needs machining, the guarding is easily removed allowing oversized parts to hang over the table.” •We can now machine much larger parts, parts that previously we had to outsource. • The Milltronics training process was outstanding, and our instrucotr was extremely knowledgeable.”

The Milltronics line is sold and serviced by Smith Machinery, a 59 year-old distributor of a variety of advanced manufacturing technologies, and Sales Engineer David Soares supported NGC Logan with their purchase. Scott says he is so pleased with his experience with Smith Machinery and the Milltronics that he would be happy to speak to potential purchasers of the Milltronics Machine.

Scott says, “I’ve been through installations in the past, and I never had the sales person show up for the installation. David Soares did... Smith Machinery is totally different... they do what they say and their follow through is great. You just don’t see this often.” Clark Smith, 4th generation family member/ owner of ISO 9001 certified Smith Machinery, says, “We recently added the Milltronics line to our portfolio of precision manufacturing machine tools. Milltronics is based out of Minnesota and has outstanding machines for any application ranging from tool Room Machines,Vertical Machining Centers, Bridge Mills to CNC Lathes. All Milltronics models come complete with easyto-use Milltronics controls that feature solid model graphics and the ability to program conversationally or with G/M code.”

Kurtis, Machinist pictured above, sums it up well, “I love this Milltronics machine.”

To learn more about all of Smith Machinery’s products, contact them at: (801) 263-6403 or visit SmithMachineTools.com

Prior to purchasing their Milltronics CNC mill, the NGC Logan team had purchased another manufacturer’s CNC tool room mill through another dealer. Scott says, “Our first purchase experience didn’t work out — from the sales and installation process to the actual machine itself not performing to our expectations.” He adds, “We actually had the dealer take the machine back, and that is when we invited Smith Machinery to come in to propose their solution.”

Manufacturing Industry Posts Biggest Annual Job Gain In 20 Years The manufacturing industry posted net job gains of 284,000 over 2018, capping its best calendar year since 1997. A priority for President Donald Trump, manufacturing saw marked hiring in December with an additional 32,000 jobs. Most of the gains occurred in blue-collar durable goods manufacturing, with growth in fabricated metals and computer and electronic products, the Labor Department said in its release. The definition of durable goods is items with a life expectancy of three years or more, such as automobiles, furniture and machinery. Health care and education saw the greatest month-over-month net change in job growth in December, adding to a year of mammoth job creation in the services sector. Health care alone accounted for more than 50,000 new jobs in December, while the construction and manufacturing sectors added to healthy gains in 2018. CNBC studied the net changes by industry for December jobs based on the data from the Labor Department contained in the jobs report released last month. The U.S. economy added a whopping 312,000 jobs last month, more than the 177,000 estimated increase from economists polled by Refinitiv, according to the report. Health care and education, which combines everything from outpatient care and social assistance to teachers and professors, posted a net gain of 82,000 jobs. Home health care services (+13,300), physician offices (+6,700) and other ambulatory care services accounted for more than 37,000 new positions while social assistance services added 7,700 jobs. Education added 24,000 jobs. “Job gains occurred in health care, food services and drinking places, construction, manufacturing, and retail trade,” the Labor Department said in a release. Retail trade employment, usually marked by larger swings in employment around the holiday season, added 23,800 jobs for the month. Construction added 38,000 jobs in December, with gains in heavy and civil engineering and nonresidential specialty trade construction. That sector added 280,000 jobs in 2018, topping the 2017 gain of 250,000. Leisure and hospitality saw a net gain of 42,000 jobs. That industry includes workers in the arts and entertainment space, as well as hotel employees and members of the food service industry.
