“The way to succeed is to double your failure rate.” Thomas Watson, (Founder of IBM) We’ve been reading very positive news about manufacturing for some time now. And just in this issue, we report findings from financial data firm Markit that June’s expansion represents the fastest and best growth rate in 4 years (at 57.6, with a reading above 50 signaling expansion in economic activity). When we read this news, we typically think about job creation and positive impact on our GDP. In fact, manufacturing represents just a small percentage of our US GDP, at ~12%, according to americanmanufacturing.org. Manufacturing’s influence on US exports is more significant, as it accounts for nearly two-thirds of our nation’s total exports of goods and services. And even more astounding is manufacturing’s role in innovation: it contributes 75% of all US private sector research and development, and the vast majority of all patents issued in the United States, according to a report published this year, titled ‘Making In America: U.S. Manufacturing Entrepreneurship And Innovation’. Here are some other positive trends in manufacturing discussed in the report: • Entrepreneurs are starting new manufacturing firms at the fastest rate in two decades. • For the first time since 1999, the number of manufacturing establishments is growing as new companies form and existing companies branch out into new factories, with more than 1400 new establishments opening in 2013. • Manufacturing R&D investment is at an all time high in the US, exceeding $200 billion, and precision machining continues to outpace manufacturing R&D growth overall. If you attend any manufacturing tradeshow, you will see the booths that generate the most excitement are those that are showcasing 3-D printers. At the most significant US consumer electronics show, CES, held each year in Las Vegas, it is said that 2014 CES will be remembered as the year when 3-D printing ‘arrived’. 3-D printing didn’t just happen, in reality, as CEO of 3-D Systems’ Avi Reichental stated, “3-D printing is an overnight success 30 years in the making.” While 3-D printing, has in fact, been available for some time now, 3-D printing of metal is a very new phenomenon in additive manufacturing. Unlike with other materials that can be printed, metal enables manufacturers to create end-use objects via 3-D printing, objects that outperform parts produced with traditional casting techniques. In fact, General Electric and Airbus are already saving money using metal laser sintering machines to produce parts for anything from aircraft, to fuel nozzles. Prototypes can be developed at a dramatically lower cost and much lower time frame with 3-D printing. 3-D printing is just beginning to accelerate innovation in manufacturing here in the United States. You, our readers, are invariably involved in manufacturing, whether you are part of a manufacturing entity, or perhaps you provide a product or service supporting this powerful industry. Know that those of us in this industry are much more likely to innovate, to be awarded patents, and are instrumental in continuing to make manufacturing in the US more and more competitive. This is something we can all be proud of, and we can continue to perpetuate. Until next issue, I wish you well. Go out and innovate. Double your failure rate! We hope to see many of you at the upcoming IMTS Show in Chicago. And as always, God Bless Our Troops!

ATK Supports Test Of New Technologies To Land Larger Payloads On Mars A TK supported NASA as it moved one step closer to landing advanced payloads on Mars following the successful test of a next generation braking system.

A world-leading producer of rocket motors, ATK provided both the rocket motor and test vehicle backbone for the test of NASA’s experimental Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD). During the test, a balloon carried the test vehicle from the Navy test range to an altitude of about 120,000 feet. At 11:05 a.m. local time, the LDSD test vehicle dropped away from the balloon and the ATK STAR 48B motor ignited to accelerate the vehicle to more than Mach 3.8 and an altitude of over 180,000 feet. The flight test simulated the low pressure and punishing speeds experienced by payloads dropped into the Mars atmosphere. ATK’s STAR 48B rocket motor provided the axial propulsion for the test, while the ATK-manufactured Core Structure Assembly (CSA) served as the platform for two breakthrough technologies from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL): an inflatable Kevlar® tube around the vehicle, called the Supersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator, and a mammoth parachute called the Supersonic Disk Sail Parachute. These new drag devices will pave the way for delivery of increasingly larger payloads to the surface of Mars. The CSA incorporates new design features required to handle the massive loads associated with deployment of the drag devices. Among other applications, this new drag technology will enable delivery of the supplies and materials needed for long-duration missions to the red planet. While the LDSD team expects to learn a great deal from this test, NASA has two more saucer-shaped test vehicles forthcoming, with plans to test them in the summer of 2015.

US Manufacturing Expands In June At Fastest Rate In 4 Years The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded more strongly than expected in June, with the rate of growth and key subindexes advancing to their highest levels in more than four years, an industry report showed recently. Vestas Says It’s Poised For The Future, Has 800 Colorado Jobs Open Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems has 800 open positions in Colorado, most of them concentrated at the company’s blade plants inWindsor and Brighton north of Denver. And the company expects that it will have more than 2,800 employees in Colorado by the end of the year —an increase of about 1,500 people compared to the start of 2014, according to Adam Serchuk, a spokesman for the company’s North American operations. If the company hits the 2,800-employee target, the means Vestas will have a record number of employees in Colorado. “These are good jobs, par t of the manufacturing renaissance in this country,” Serchuk said during an interview with the Denver Business Journal.

The company has been on a steady march, in terms of landing new orders for new energyproducing machines, for the last year. In 2013,Vestas said it sold 1,733 megawatts worth of wind turbines, about $1.7 billion worth of machines capable of generating enough power to meet the needs of more than 500,000 homes. And since the start of 2014, the company has announced another 1,255 megawatts worth of orders, Serchuk said. “These factories are busy today and will be busy through the first quarter of 2016,” he said. Car Makers InnovateWith Green Plastics The Los Angeles Times reports that Ford Motor Co. is trying to reduce car weight and increase fuel economy by using environmentally friendly materials such as tomato skin-derived floor mats, and soy oil-based seat cushions. Other innovations include using recycled clothes as interior padding, using wheat straw in plastic storage bins, and making dandelion and marigold pulp into a non-petroleum rubber alternative for tires. Ford isn’t the only company looking into plastic alternatives, however, as both Honda and Toyota have begun incorporating their own green innovations into their cars.

The proposal offered by the companies, the sole bidders on the project, was “technically in good shape and was quite a bit below the cost analysis that the Pentagon felt was appropriate,” Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said. “So it appeared to be a very good deal for the taxpayer from a cost perspective.” Defense News

NASA Finalizes Contract To Build The Most Powe r f u l R ocket Ever

The first mission will launch an empty Orion spacecraft. The second mission is targeted for 2021 and will launch Orion and a crew of up to four NASA astronauts.

NASA has reached a milestone in its development of the Space Launch System, or SLS, which is set to be the most powerful rocket ever and may one day take astronauts to Mars.

The rocket’s initial flight-test configuration will provide a 77-ton lift capacity. The final evolved two-stage configuration will be able to lift more than 143 tons.

After completing a critical design review, Boeing Co. has finalized a $2.8-billion contract with the space agency. The deal allows full production on the rocket to begin. “Our teams have dedicated themselves to ensuring that the SLS – the largest ever -will be built safely, affordably and on time,” Virginia Barnes, Boeing’s Space Launch System vice president and program manager, said in a statement. The last time NASA’s completed a critical design review of a deep-space human rocket was 1961, when the space agency assessed the mighty Saturn V, which ultimately took man to the moon. The rocket will carry the Orion spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin Corp., which can carry up to four astronauts beyond low Earth orbit on long-duration, deep-space destinations including near-Earth asteroids, the moon, and ultimately Mars. The rocket, which is designed to carry crew and cargo, is scheduled for its initial test flight from Cape Canaveral, Fla., in 2017. A2Z METALWORKER

Smith Machinery Co. Celebrates 54 Years Serving The Manufacturing Industry In The Rocky Mountain Region

Smith Machinery’s Showroom, Office, and Training Center at 41 West Guest Ave, in Salt Lake City

Clark Smith, President and owner of Smith Machinery Co. Inc., says, “The US is in a renaissance of manufacturing, and the outlook for manufacturers is really bright. While there will be ups and downs, industry forecasts predict that we can expect to see growth for the next 5 years at the very least.” Clark’s educational background is in economics, and he is an avid researcher into the economic environment in manufacturing. He is the 4th generation Smith family member dedicated to serving machine shops throughout Utah, Idaho,Wyoming and Montana. You could say the Smith family is passionate about manufacturing.

Mazak Factory Service Technicians Dave and Ernie

AJ Tucker joined the Smith Machinery team more than 2 years ago. Along with his aptitude and machine shop background, we’ve invested significantly in providing him with training. AJ does part process evaluations and time studies for our customers, he’s available to answer technical questions, and he provides onsite training and classroom training. While our service team fixes machines, AJ’s job is all about machine tool productivity improvement. In the end, this helps our customers operate more profitably and competitively.”

installations. “Our Mazak factory technicians are the specialists, much like surgeons.” Smith Machinery has been very successful supporting customers that have made investments in 5-axis machines, INTEGREX 5-axis multitasking centers, Gantry-Style Load/Unload Robots and Palletech Manufacturing Cells. All together there are well over 100 of these types of high technology machines, robots and cells installed here. “Higher technology keeps our customers competitive, and local factory service support is critical at that level of investment”. A Dedicated and Knowledgeable Staff – The majority of the team has been supporting Smith Machinery’s customers for many years now. Customers all know and love the office staff, Mindy, Dorothy & Sue, and the 3 have more than 5 decades combined years supporting Smith Machinery’s customers. They know every customer, every resource for parts and supplies and coordinate the unique service structure the company has created. It’s not unusual for Smith Machinery’s customers to come and take them to lunch as a “thank you” for the great support they provide. Though Klaus has only been with the company for a few years, he was a former machine shop owner and long-time customer of Smith Machinery. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his customers. And then there is the Smith legacy. Many customers still remember Edward and Tracy Smith, the 2nd & 3rd generations, and their passion for integrity that is definitely part of the company’s culture.Tracy’s son Clark has dedicated the past 33 years serving loyal Smith Machinery customers and you can expect to meet Spencer, Clark’s son, later this year. ISO Certification – Machine shops certify to ISO 9001:2008 on a regular basis, sometimes because their customers require it to ensure proper processes are in place to deliver quality parts. It is much less common for a machine tool dealer to certify to this rigorous quality standard. Smith Machinery did just this in 2006. Clark says, “We certified because we wanted to improve our in-house processes. We knew this would facilitate better transactions and improve the long-term support to our customers.” He says, “ISO certification also required that we survey our customers. We do this, and we get very candid feedback from our customers -- and it results in process improvements.” “Lastly”, he continued, “We wanted to walk the walk with our customers, understanding what they went through to certify and live by the ISO standards. It’s been invaluable to making us a better supplier/partner for our customers.”

“When our mold shop starts looking to purchase new equipment, Smith Machinery is our first call. Klaus Lassig and company have been outstanding making recommendations for the best machinery to meet our needs, not the best machinery to meet their sales quota. We have worked with Smith Machinery to evaluate our manufacturing needs and they go the extra mile to quote many different machines, and do this multiple times to meet the many requests of our purchasing department. The machinery we’ve purchased was delivered right on time and they even went the extra mile to make sure that we would have the equipment in house by our end of year purchasing deadline. It’s not just making the sale that makes buying from Smith Machinery our first choice, it’s also the outstanding service after the sale that keeps us coming back. Maybe it’s because they only represent high quality machines, and the service and support on the equipment has never been more than a phone call away. You won’t go wrong purchasing from Smith Machinery!” - Mike Woodward, BD Medical “RAM Manufacturing has been designing and developing products for the aerospace industry for 40 yrs. We have been working with Smith Machinery since the early 1980’s, when they supplied us with our first Mazak Machining Center with a pallet changer in 1981. Clark and his team at Smith Machinery have always provided RAM with top of the line machine tools combined with excellent service; this is a relationship that creates success in a manufacturing environment. Mazak with it’s ‘Done-in-One’ methodology has helped RAM maintain a competitive edge in the industry. We thank Clark and his team at Smith Machinery for years of dedicated service to make RAM a world class manufacturer in the Aerospace Industry.” - Kevin Ganowsky , RAM Manufacturing “Smith Machinery has been a great machine tool supplier to us for over 20 years. Their service, sales and machine tool knowledge have always been excellent. We have several Mazak machine tools as well as Mitsubishi wire EDM machines and both manufacturers have proven to always be on the cutting edge of technology and very reliable. Both are what we expect and need to be competitive and provide the best service that we can to our customers.” - Rey M. Rivera, High Tech Quality Manufacturing Inc. “When you are looking for machining solutions for a wide variety of manufacturing applications, turn to Smith Machinery for their expert support. For years Smith Machinery has supplied our company with machining solutions for our difficult manufacturing processes and most recently with the implementation of our new ANCA MX5 5-axis CNC grinding solution. We are very pleased to do business with the experts at Smith Machinery!” - Jarrett Meier, US Synthetic “Over the 21 years we’ve been in business, we have bought many Mazak and Star machine tools from Smith Machinery. They offer great products and great service and are a valued partner in our success.” - Mark Jones, Clean Machine

Smith Machinery Supports Manufacturing Associations –The Smith Machinery Co. has long been active in national associations dedicated to promoting and improving manufacturing. They were very active members of the American Machine Tool Dealers Association (AMTDA), now AMT (with both Tracy and Clark serving as National Chairman), and they support the NTMA Northern Utah Chapter (a newer chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA). Smith Machinery Offers Superior Machine Tool Technologies. Mazak – 37 years ago, Smith Machinery was awarded the prestigious Mazak machine tool line, and Clark says that it serves his customers very well. “Mazak is known for always embracing high-technology, and they set themselves apart by making it easier to use. That’s a major reason why there are so many high-technology Mazak machines in our territory”. “In addition”, he continued, “Mazak is a privately held family-owned company, with factories all over the world. It was 40 years ago this year that they completed the U.S. factory in Florence, Kentucky. Since that time, they have continuously made additional investments in growing the factory here. Today their campus in Florence, Kentucky is nearly 1 million square feet, and they employ more than 800 people here in the United States. Their latest expansion will be finished by the end of this year and with it they will have the capacity to produce up to 200 CNC machine tools per month. The vision to build this factory, over 40 years ago, was amazing. The commitment to continuously invest and grow the plant since then is unmatched. They have served U.S. manufacturers through good economies and bad, but they never waivered in their long-term strategy to support their customers here.” Mitsubishi – Smith Machinery is the full-line Mitsubishi distributor for this area. They are known as leaders in EDM machines, lasers (both fiber & CO2) and Roku-Roku (graphite and H.S. milling centers), yet they also have excellent press brakes, waterjets, VMC’s & drill/ tap machines. Last year, Smith Machinery received an award from Mitsubishi for achieving greater than 30% market share in their EDM sales. Clark says that Mitsubishi accounts for more than 40% of all EDM sales in the United States. They have excellent technologies all backed by dozens of service technicians and applications engineers.

move to CNC and high volume production. Recently, one of our customers was making prototype parts for a new product, and they knew that they would have to purchase their first Swiss-style machine once they were awarded the production contract. It happened, and Star made sure they had the new machine installed and were up and running the production order in less than 2 weeks.” ANCA – Clark says that the ANCA tool & cutter grinders are a unique machine tool technology, that has evolved from a supporting role (sharpening and customizing cutting tools), into a product that can make surgical Klaus In the Showroom tools & implants and has new technologies for working with Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD). ANCA is a technology and software driven company that is setting itself apart by taking the typical T&C grinder and adapting them to non-traditional applications. They also have the expertise to incorporate automation either at the factory or in the field. Romi – Smith Machinery added the Romi machine tool line to their portfolio in 2005, and Clark says it’s just been a great product for their customers. He elaborates, “Romi built all the Bridgeport Easy Path CNC lathes for many years. When Bridgeport went through a bankruptcy, Romi decided to set-up their own facility in the U.S. and sell through their own distributor network. “Today”, Clark says, “Romi refined the design of their combination (manual/CNC) lathe to be the best product available. Our customers appreciate the easy to use Romi software and that the machines are simple and fast; in essence they are an optimal solution for machine shops who are doing low volume production, tooling, prototype and also for shops that are rethreading pipe for the oil/gas industry.” The Smith Machinery Team Loves Animals – This is good for machine shop owners, because dog lovers are good people. In a study conducted by BuzzFeed Animals, the following is true of dog lovers. They’re super fun at parties, they are smart, they know the value of a little R & R, they’ll give you a hug when you need it most (typically, dog owners are more nurturing), and they are more likely to be “team players.” In our industry, if you tour machine shops, you will likely encounter a company dog (or cat) at many of the shops.

Star CNC – Clark says, “The Star CNC Swiss machine has been outstanding product line for our customers. We selected this manufacturer not only because of their capabilities, especially for serving Clark and Cade the medical industry here, but also because of their superior support in our region. Our customers have a readily available group of outstanding service and application support To learn more about Smith Machinery Co., and what they can do team in the western region”. Our customers know the support is for your for your business, contact them at 801-263-6403 or visit always there for them”. their website at smithmachinetools.com. Better yet, visit the Smith He continued, “Star has been able to take companies with no CNC Machinery team personally. You’ll find good people, and if you are a experience, train them, train them some more, and facilitate their dog lover, you will love meeting Cade! Why Are Space Companies Flocking To Colorado? The launch of the WorldView-3 satellite-imaging space mission marked a big milestone for a triad of Colorado giants: DigitalGlobe, United Launch Alliance and Ball Aerospace. In a state that bills itself as a “mile closer to space,” Colorado will celebrate the mid-August takeoff as further proof that it’s a major U.S. aerospace industry player—a position that dates back seven lucrative decades. Today some 400 companies count 70,000 employees in the military, civil and private sectors of the Colorado aerospace industry. Space-related enterprises accounted for almost a $9 billion contribution to the state economy in 2011, according to the Brookings Institution. That’s 4 percent of Colorado’s private-sector gross domestic product. Indeed, the state generally identified more with buckaroos than rocket scientists is home to many of the industry’s bigger names, including Sierra Nevada, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, the U.S. Air Force Space Command and the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. To say that Colorado has a lot going for it in the aerospace sector is an understatement when one considers the state’s wide range of companies; its well-respected university research programs; the military installations directly tied to NASA and U.S. Defense Department space efforts; and local, state and federal officials who have long lobbied to promote the business the state has, while pushing hard to attract more. “Without a doubt, Colorado is one of the leading states in the U.S., if not the world, in attracting new space-age tenants,” says Richard David, the CEO of NewSpace Global in New York. But there are clouds on Colorado’s space industry horizon.

from several U.S. states that want a bigger piece of the aerospace action has slowed Colorado’s go-go pace to some degree. The state’s long-running reliance on federal funding, its lack of access to venture capital and R&D funding sources, an aging workforce and little cross-talk among many sectors of the aerospace industry threaten to undermine Colorado’s solid position. “Colorado’s world-class space sector finds itself standing at a point of tremendous opportunity and peril as it considers how to navigate massive uncertainties and capture further advantage in the years ahead,” a recent report on the state’s aerospace industry from the Brookings Institution flatly declares. The Pentagon, for one, plans to slice 10 percent of its space division’s annual budgets over the next 10 years. And President Barack Obama’s FY2013 Defense Department budget called for a 20 percent cut in new satellite funding over 2012’s level. In turn, the federal government is seeking faster, leaner and cheaper ways to build defense-related low-orbit satellites; long-haul communications and Earth-imaging networks; and other services in the private, commercial sector rather than fund construction of its own billion-dollar technologies. On the same token, rather than rely on NASA for the bulk of their orders, the savviest aerospace players are branching out. Vendors are spending more on research to find new ways to build flocks of telecom satellites; create new hardware and software applications; and develop breakthrough consumer- and business-facing services, like space tourism, high-end drones, satellite-based broadband Internet, cloud-based computer services and next-generation digital imaging. “In short, all kinds of actors in the space economy need to be much more attentive

and respond much more nimbly to the changing demands of existing and new customers,” the Brookings report notes. The global space economy generated some $300 billion in business in 2011, according to the Satellite Industry Association. The U.S.’s share: more than 66 percent of that total generated by the manufacture and operation of satellites, launch vehicles and space-based services for government and commercial customers. Ball Aerospace designed and built the Operational Land Imager, an advancement in Landsat sensor technology. Ball Aerospace designed and built the Operational Land Imager, an advancement in Landsat sensor technology. In 1996, satellite services accounted for 40 percent of aerospace industry revenue in this country—a figure that rose to 60 percent in 2011 due, in part, to demand for direct broadcast TV and cell phone services. Smart Windows? Unmanned Aircraft? Colorado Awards Grants For Product Development Colorado awarded another $1.6 million in advanced-industry accelerator grants last month to six university projects and to six companies working on products ranging from unmanned aerial systems to heat-reducing windows. The awards represent the third round of grant funding given through the program created by the Legislature in 2013 and continued earlier this year. They are part of Gov. John Hickenlooper’s focus on growing jobs in high-paying industries ranging from aerospace to bioscience. He said he believes the state can take advantage of its workforce to become a bigger national player. “We are thrilled to have awarded 67 grants for a total of $8.2 million [over the three rounds] and are excited to see the successes these forward-thinking organizations have next,” Hickenlooper said. University of Colorado received five of the six proof-of-concept grants, while the Colorado School of Mines got the other. The largest was a $134,847 award for CU to develop an advanced small unmanned aircraft system. Among the six early-stage capital and retention grants for private firms, four Front Range companies received $250,000 awards. Those included Denver’s Ravenbrick LLC, which makes “smart windows” that reduce heat and glare when temperatures are high and let in light and warmth when temperatures drop.

The Los Angeles Times reports that “energy efficiency has lately become a hot pursuit for tech entrepreneurs, big-data enthusiasts and Wall Street speculators.” Power companies are “tapping databases to profile intensely the energy use of their customers,” using technology from companies like Google-owned Nest, which enables Southern California Edison to “precool the homes of customers before the evening rush, helping the utility avoid the need to fire up extra power plants and netting cash rebates for homeowners.”

Providing Superior And Innovative Ski Lift Products Facilitated By New Technology And Software All Designed and Manufactured in the USA customers are all here in the US today.”

Low Costs Just 6 years ago, partners David Metivier, Jan Leonard, Carl Skylling and Alan Hepner started a new company. Today, they are owners of 4 related companies, Skytrac, Hilltrac, Fabtrac and Skytrac Services. Skytrac designs superior ski lift technology, Hilltrac designs inclined transportation systems (enclosures that take people from their dwellings to the ski resort), Fabtrac manufactures the products for Skytrac and Hilltrac, and Skytrac Services installs Skytrac and Hilltrac products on or around ski resorts throughout the United States. The company resides in a campus that sits on approximately 5.5 acres, with facilities that total 55,000 square feet. What is remarkable is how these start up companies have done so incredibly well in such a mature industry with high barriers to entry. To secure new customers, the team at Skytrac and Hilltrac must win business that was once their competitors. Tom Ross, a young mechanical engineer who joined the company shortly after graduating from college, explains how the Skytrac/Hilltrac entities are winning business.

Experience and Reputation in the Industry “Our reputation was outstanding when we first opened for business. This is because every partner and a number of the employees have extensive experience in the industry, having come from CTEC, which stands for Cable Transportation Engineering Company. CTEC was the successor to Thiokol, a company that built ski lifts between 1971 and 1977.When Thiokol exited the ski lift business, they sold the designs to Jan Leonard and another employee, who founded CTEC. (CTEC was acquired by Doppelmayr, an Austrian ski lift manufacturer, in 2002).” He continued, “Jan, David, Carl and Alan formed Skytrac, Hilltrac and the other entities to design and build ski lifts and inclined transportation systems that were made here in the United States, and with US specific designs. Tom says, “We embrace new technology, and this means that we invest in machines/software/tools that allow us to build more products with less people. In our 6 years we’ve doubled our sales each year, without the need to double our staff.” He continued, “We also standardize our designs and manufacturing, so that we can minimize costs. So, with lower overhead and standardization, we can build our products more economically than our competitors. We pass our savings on to our customers so that we are a lower cost solution today.”

Flexibility and Superior Customer Support Tom says, “We are a small company (less than 50 employees), and this means that we can be faster and more flexible. We will work with small operations or ski areas, when often our competitors won’t, and if they need replacement parts (not a whole new lift), we will always support them. It doesn’t even have to be replacements for our manufactured lifts.” Team member Justin Nelson says, “Our culture is one of excitement in a start up environment. Every employee is passionate about our business.” He continued, “This translates into superior customer service. We care about doing everything to make our customers want to continue to do business with us.” Justin is an integral member of the manufacturing/fabrication team for the companies. He says, “Where I worked before in this industry, the equipment we used to build our products was old -- we didn’t invest in new technology. At Skytrac/ Hilltrac/Fabtrac, our management team values new technology. Our fab shop is equipped with CNC and robotic technology. This not only means that we can build more economically, it means we can build more consistently reliable products.”

Manufacturing The company’s manufacturing was primarily fabrication, but they saw a need to open a machine shop. At the end of 2012, they purchased 2 Haas CNC machines from Moncktons MachineTools.Today, theTrac entities have an impressive number of in-house capabilities, including fabrication, certified welding, electrical design and fabrication, robotic welding,

machining, painting, laser cutting (up to 1” thick) and plasma/flame cutting (up to 3” thick). While Fabtrac does all of the manufacturing for Skytrac and Hilltrac, the nature of the business (all products must be built in time for ski season), enables Fabtrac to support outside customers. Justin says that you should contact Fabtrac if you require specialty design services. He says, “We have onsite electricians, as well as mechanical, structural, and civil engineers. In addition to our expertise in designing new technology, we have the shop capabilities to build the end product for you. And we can do it at a fair price.” Tom adds, “We can machine and fabricate very large parts. We can do weldments on parts that weigh as much at 10,000 lbs, and we can drills parts that are up to 8’ long by 8’ tall by 4’ wide.”

Delcam Software Justin says that when the team purchased their first Haas CNC machines, it was Moncktons Machine Tools who recommended that Fabtrac contact Delcam for their software. Tom says, “I used Delcam’s software while in college at the University of Utah, and I knew that it was a great software package.” Justin had used another CAM software package in the past, and he knew this wasn’t the software he wanted for the company’s shop. Justin says, “Blaine Duke was the Sales Engineer who came to introduce us to the Delcam software. We were very impressed and we purchased a license for FeatureCAM 2.5D, FeatureTurn, and FeatureRecognition.” Tom admits he wasn’t a fan of FeatureRecognition. That is, until he attended Delcam’s training. He says, “I learned a little about FeatureRecognition in college, but it was too little to appreciate its value.” He continued, “Andy Barney was our Delcam instructor, and he was fantastic. He was a mold maker in the past. He was very knowledgeable on the software, and he also is extremely knowledgeable on ‘speeds and feeds’.” Andy helped Tom to realize the power of FeatureRecognition. When asked about their Delcam Tech Support experience once they were back at the company utilizing the software, Tom says, “We haven’t used it but once or twice. FeatureCAM is just so easy to use and intuitive. And what I like about Interactive FeatureRecognition is that I can specify which feature types are to be recognized, and the software finds all the features of the specified type in a single step.” Justin appreciates full control of all machining parameters, enabling him to edit operations as required, and he also likes the guided FeatureRecognition and the Automated feature creation. He says, “With FeatureCAM, I can pull a solid model from sitting at the computer, put it into the machine, touch off the tooling, and go. Where it used to take me an hour to redraw the model without FeatureCAM, it now takes about 10 minutes. It reads the solid part directly really well, with no importing issues.” What’s next for Hilltrac/Skytrac/Fabtrac’s software improvements? Tom says that they will evaluate Delcam’s PowerMILL Robot Interface software for welding. Blaine says, “PowerMILL Robot Interface will support offline robot programming applications for trimming, machining, welding, polishing and much more. With the Delcam PowerMILL Robot Interface you can program robots with external axes such as rotary tables and linear tracks as easily as you could program a 5-axis machine. It also provides accurate 3D simulation of your robot’s behavior.” To learn more about Delcam’s full line of software, contact them at 1-877-DELCAM1 or visit www.delcam.com. Moog’s Gen3 Weaponizes Small Helos

aircraft to steer it to a position.”

Moog Integrated Defense Systems has introduced what it calls its Gen3 Weapons System, which made one of its first public appearances aboard an MD530G light attack helicopter at Heli-Expo 2014. Although the company says it can be used aboard any airborne military platform, it is quick to add that it was designed to be the optimum size and weight for light attack helicopters and airplanes.

Reichard adds that Gen3 is not designed to be a rack system. Its four components can be individually replaced, making it easily serviceable. The Moog Gen3 Weapons System can currently be found aboard the MD530G and the Bell 407GT, which have found customers in foreign militaries. Other aircraft, which the company would not divulge, are also being fitted with the system.

NOAA Begins Testing Use Of Drones To Measure Hurricane Strength

The primary components of the system are the stores management computer (SMC), the stores control panel, the stores interface unit, and a rocket interface. Moog engineers say the combined weight of 12 lbs. and small size can fit in the aft compartment of any light helicopter used for military applications.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will begin testing the deployment of small Coyote drones into the eye of tropical hurricanes to measure changes in barometric pressure. Forecasters hope the data will help them better predict the how strong a storm will become. “The thermo-dynamics of the ocean near a storm’s eye is not something we sample very often,” said NOAA research meteorologist Jason Dunion. “It’s hard to sample.”

“It’s the lightest in the market,” said Jason Reichard, the business unit director at Moog’s Orlando engineering center. “[And] it’s designed to be platform agnostic,” meaning it can work with any weapon system aboard any aircraft.

Rotorcraft’s Next Great Step May Start In August

Moog’s Gen3 Weapons System was designed with light helicopters in mind. The combined units, which weigh 12 lbs, and can control any weapon currently in the light attack helicopter inventory. Graphic courtesy of Moog Integrated Systems At the core of the Gen3 system is the SMC, which “talks” to all of the platform interfaces, such as sensors, navigation gear, autopilots, and digitized mission data, then use that information to accurately create a firing solution for the aircraft’s ordinance. “We can take coordinates off of a moving map, we can place targets on a moving map, show missile footprints, targets of opportunity, and communicate steering cues to get on target,” explained Reichard.”So, if you designated a target, and you needed to be in a different position, [the SMC] will calculate that and give steering cues to the pilot. Want to see an advanced helicopter fly faster than 230 knots? Well, don’t get out your binoculars and cameras yet, aircraft-watchers. What may be the next great leap forward in rotorcraft technology begins a month from now with a baby step. By early August, the Army-run Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator program is to choose which of four industry competitors will be given money to build a proof-of-concept aircraft incorporating new or exotic means of making rotorcraft fly faster and farther. The JMR TD is one part of a larger Future Vertical Lift program whose goals include producing a new medium-lift rotorcraft able to fly faster than

230 knots – a hundred knots or so as fast as most existing military helicopters cruise. While the JMR TD aircraft are to start flight demonstrations in late 2017, any actual military aircraft they might help spawn will fly no sooner than a decade or more later, and probably 2035. “We’re not building prototypes,” the Army program manager, Dan Bailey, told a CSIS panel discussion on the project last month. “They’re demonstrator aircraft.” JointMultiRolerotorcraft AVX concept Michael Hirschberg, executive director of the American Helicopter Society International, said that while speeding up rotorcraft flight is a key goal, speeding into production isn’t. “This isn’t as much about urgency as it is about doing a next-generation design,” Hirschberg said. “They’re trying to do it as quickly as possible but it’s practically impossible to do something faster because of how bureaucratic the defense acquisition system is. In any event, it’s better to take a little longer to have something that’s revolutionary than just another evolutionary step.” Bailey was vague about precisely how the four entrants will be narrowed down, whether two or three will be left standing, and exactly how the money might be divided among them. The Army gave the four entrants – AVX Aircraft Company, Bell Helicopter Textron Inc., a team formed by Boeing Company and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., and Karem Aircraft – $6.5 million to refine their designs over the past year, and Bailey said they all have technologies he hopes they will continue to develop. With a total of $350 million to spend on a program that began in 2009, he just can’t pay them all to build demonstrators. “We will certainly — at the end of the day I believe — have opportunities in every one of the four vendors that we would like to continue at some level,” Bailey told reporters after the panel discussion, which featured representatives of each competitor. “Where we draw the line is going to be based on the resources I have to invest.” Sikorsky Boeing Joint MultiRole JMR-FVL The four entrants are offering variations on two basic concepts

designed to overcome the inherent limitations on a conventional helicopter’s speed imposed by the aerodynamics of rotors, the central challenge being to maximize horizontal as well as vertical thrust. One such concept is the compound helicopter, which adds separate means of horizontal thrust, as Sikorsky did with its X2 technology demonstrator. The other is the tiltrotor, which uses rotors to provide both forms of thrust, swiveling them upward to fly like a helicopter and forward to fly like an airplane, as does Bell-Boeing’s V-22 Osprey, in service with the Marines and Air Force. AVX and Boeing/Sikorsky are offering compound helicopters while Bell and Karem are offering tiltrotors. Industry insiders are certain the Army will keep funding at least one of each – at least one compound helicopter and one tiltrotor. Logically, they add, the fact that both AVX and Karem Aircraft are essentially design companies with no production facilities of their own while Bell and Boeing/Sikorsky are major manufacturers of helicopters and the V-22 suggests two most likely outcomes. The Army might give most of what money it has for the project to Bell and the Boeing/Sikorsky team because they clearly know how to build aircraft and have built aircraft with configurations similar to those they’re offering for JMR TD. Alternatively, on the theory that Bell and Boeing/Sikorsky need the money less, and will probably keep working on their technologies in any event, the Army might give most of the money it has to AVX and Karem to keep them going with designs most experts agree are innovative. But those are only two of many alternatives, so stay tuned.

Utilizing Today’s Technology To Deliver Perfected Solutions Precision Plus started as most small businesses do, out of a garage with a dream. In the beginningWayne and Bret Baumann (Father and Son) worked 17 Plus hour days, with two machines and a chance to fulfill a father and sons life long dream of owning their own destiny. Maybe that’s how Precision Plus got their name? Naw, it was and always will be the extra precision that Precision Plus puts into all of their work! Wayne and Bret worked regular jobs during the day and burned the midnight oil after their day jobs were through. They worked every spare hour in tandem to build their dream business. The new company landed a sizable job in the earlier days with an ion source manufacturing company. This new work pushed them from their small garage shop with manual machines to a larger commercial workspace and this job enabled them to buy new CNC machine. As new work continued to flow through the shop the business grew and the shop would expand. During their expansion and growth Jason Van Rossum (Jason is Bret’s Brother and Wayne’s Son) had just finished his tour in Iraq (4th ID) and had an interest in expanding the machining training he had received from the Army. Jason was brought on as an employee in 2006, and became a partner in 2012. Bret is currently a Sergeant with a Police Department, and does that part time along with the responsibilities he has in the shop. As the business expanded there came a dire need to purchase state of the art CNC machines. Wayne and Bret set out to find a machine tool supplier that would stand behind them with precision machine tools. Wayne said, “When you’re a young company you have little history and the machine tool dealers look at you as a high risk. We had great personal credit together but as a company we lacked longevity.” Bret said, “In the beginning Monkton’s Machinery was the only machine tool dealer that would give us the time of day. Without them seeing us and taking a chance on us we wouldn’t have gotten off the ground. They did and we did and they are our preferred machine tool supplier” In the early years Wayne worked for Woodward Inc. a major Corporation in Fort Collins, in a variety of positions including machining and purchasing.Wayne credits Woodward for affording him a very broad education and feels he learned what he needed to run a business by working with suppliers and his team mates at Woodward Inc. Bret is also versed at machining, welding, and electronics. Harness the third Musketeer Jason to this team and you have a Plus, Precision Plus. This father and 2-son team is so in tune that they can actually hear a tool from across the shop getting to a wear point that is near its end of cycle. Chad Wadsworth Moncktons Machine Tools, Inc. and Technical Support Pro said, “When I walk into this shop there is something new going on every time, some new tool, a new way at looking at a very difficult job, or just a cool new way they come up with to make a job A2Z METALWORKER

that no one can make pay, and they make it work and the job becomes profitable. Precision Plus is not old school tunnel vision, and they don’t say this is the way we’ve always done it and better yet they are always looking to technology and for the next greatest thing to propel their business into the future.” Bret continued, “We are also very lucky with our machine tool and cutting tool suppliers. Chad Wadsworth with Moncktons Machine Tools, Inc. has proven to be a most valuable source for us.When we need a new solution or we need to ask questions on how to tackle some new work with new technology, Chad’s knowledge is invaluable and he always directs us to the next best machine tool and the accessories we need to grow our business. We trust him and we know he’s not trying to sell us something we don’t need. This is a major reason we buy Haas machine tools from Monkton’s Machine Tools Sales.” Wayne says, “We also found Western Tool and Supply to be a great tool supplier, and their sales associate Kendra Powers who has actually made tools for a major world-class company. When she comes in here and looks at what we are doing she comes up with solutions. She is a very knowledgeable person with real information and that’s what we need This is the

type of support we look for in our suppliers, from helping us get our first CNC machine to continuing to help us grow our business with machine tools that work, stay working, and make high precision components all the time. If you don’t continue growing in your knowledge with the latest in technology, your business stops growing and you become stagnant. We listen to our business, when its time to grow it will tell us. In fact, we’ve been growing our business every day and we’re always looking to grow our business and get that next best Haas machine tool and that next great customer.” “This goes hand in hand with our work ethic; we don’t build bad parts, says Jason, we guarantee good parts.” “If you get a bad part we will make it right, we just guarantee perfectly made parts, pure and simple! We had a customer up in Wyoming that had a couple of parts that were on the high end of the tolerance, I got in my truck, drove up there early in the morning and drove them back up and handed the perfect parts right back into his hands that same afternoon.” Chad says, “When I walk through those doors it’s peaceful, everything is under control and I don’t see constant fire fighting like I see at many shops.” “That’s exactly what we strive for said Bret. We strive for a great work environment with a stable environment, we have 5 full time employees, and 3 owner/operators and we want them all to love working here. One of our Machinists Cliff Cabrera told me, “I love the attitude here, we are treated extremely fair, and I feel like they want me to be here. I love to wake up knowing that I get to head to that Job.” Today after 14 years, Precision Plus is still in the building they rented way back when they started, the only difference is they have since purchased the building and have expanded the building with an addition. They added on to bring the size of the shop to 6300 square feet. They now have 11 Haas CNC machines 7 Mills (from a Super Mini Mill to a VF3YT with 4th axis) and 4 Lathes (from a SL-10 & SL/ST-30, to secondary equipment). Precision Plus has evolved from a small job shop to a contract manufacturing company and production shop. Precision Plus retains their customers by providing them results, constant measurable results, cost savings, and responsive can do service that comes through every time, guaranteed.

Hear what some of Precision Plus’s customers have to say about Precision Plus: “We go way back 2007; those guys bend over backwards for us and for our military customers. Precision Plus has great turn around, and their prices are very competitive, quality is very good. We have fairly complex parts and they have grown to meet our needs. I highly recommend Precision Plus as a valued supplier.” - An owner of a robot company in Colorado “Precision Plus is a fabulous supplier. They do more of the complex metal work and they do it all very well. I’ve been here 3 years and Precision Plus has been

just a great supplier for me and they have been supplying our company for more than 10 years. They are a long-standing preferred supplier. 1st rate quality, nice guys to work with, and I appreciate working with them, very professional.” -A Buyer, from a major contact manufacturing company in Colorado “We’ve been working with Precision Plus for a long time, 10 or so years. They have always been extremely responsive, any kind of rush or concerns that we may have are always accommodated. We do a lot of R&D and need it right away and they always come through for us.They are so easy to work with. They always come up with ways to make things better or cheaper. They are a great source to work with and they are always brain storming on ways to help us and reduce cost.” – A Production Manager at a major manufacturing company in Colorado “We’ve been working with Precision Plus for over 6 years. When we were a start up company we needed parts quickly and they were flexible enough to help us meet our deadlines. Today we do higher volumes and Precision Plus grew to meet our higher volume and grew to help us through our drawing problems. They do very complicated parts in stainless steel with high tolerance and complexity. They’re a terrific shop and do really good work for us.” - Director of R&D For A Designer Of High Tech Medical Instrumentation. “They’re fantastic and they do everything we ask of them and in a timely manner. They are easy to work with. Three companies with Colorado operations are teaming up to build a North Dakota wind farm named Border Winds. Vestas Wind Systems, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer with four plants in Colorado, said that it’s landed a contract to build 62 of its V100-2.0 megawatt wind turbines for the project. Broomfield’s RES Americas is the developer of the Border Winds wind farm in Rolette County in north central North Dakota, near the Canadian border. And when the project is complete, RES Americas will transfer ownership of the Border Winds power station to Xcel Energy Inc., which is based in Minneapolis and also is Colorado’s biggest provider of electricity and natural gas. Vestas said it expects to deliver the turbines for the Border Winds project in the third quarter of 2015; commissioning of the turbines is expected to take place before the end of 2015. Vestas said its Colorado factories are expected to be involved in the manufacture of the turbines’ nacelles, blades and towers. The Border Winds wind farm is expected to generate 150 megawatts of power. The order represents about 124 megawatts of power. RES ordered turbines for the remaining 26 megawatts of power in September 2013, when the company signed a master-supply agreement with Vestas for the manufacture and delivery of up to 610 megawatts worth of turbines, Vestas said in its announcement. Vestas said of the 610 megawatts involved in the master-supply agreement with RES, Vestas has locked in 444 megawatts of actual orders either directly from RES or from other companies that bought RES’s projects and then placed an order for the turbines with Vestas. Ken Handelman, deputy assistant secretary of state for defense controls, said the latest changes would shift some less sensitive military electronics and components from the State Department’s U.S. Munitions List to the Commerce Department’s list of commercial items, easing exports of those items while maintaining strict controls

on more sensitive technologies. The changes are part of a major drive to reform U.S. export control laws that was launched by President Barack Obama in August 2009. Changes have already been announced for satellites and aircraft, among others. Military electronics are the second largest category released so far, measured by number of applications handled by the State Department, Handelman said. He said reviews of remaining categories, including cloud computing, would be completed by the end of the year. Handelman told Reuters in an interview this month that the Obama administration’s review of Category XI military electronics was particularly difficult since such items comprise “the heart and soul of what gives the U.S. military its edge.” In the end, he said administration officials agreed to shift a “huge amount of stuff ” from the State Department’s weapons list to the Commerce Department list, easing exports of those items, especially to NATO countries and other close U.S. allies. Handelman said the drive was aimed at reducing ambiguity for companies about which items required export licenses and which did not. The changes take effect Dec. 30. “The rule itself is now much more precise,” he said. He said the changes should allow companies to better track and predict which items most concerned national security officials, he said. For instance, specific bandwidths were established for weather radars that had previously not been so clearly defined. U.S. companies have generally welcomed the government’s export control efforts, but are pressing for quicker action on some items not yet addressed, including unmanned planes and items associated with commercial spaceflight. Compliance with the changes has also resulted in a huge amount of work for big weapons makers like Lockheed Martin Corp , Raytheon Co and Sikorsky Aircraft, a unit of United Technologies Corp, which must reclassify hundreds of parts used in different weapons systems. Handelman said the State Department had received some critical comments about the reform effort from industry and other groups, but the “vast middle is generally positive.” He said the changes were aimed at improving security, enhancing cooperation and joint operations with close allies, and helping U.S. companies by reducing incentives for foreign buyers to deliberately avoid U.S.-origin parts and components. Items were left on the U.S. Munitions List if they were found to be inherently military, or had characteristics that gave the United States a critical military or intelligence advantage, and were almost exclusively available from the United States. Aerospace Firms Place Long-Term Bets On 3D Printing The prospect of huge time savings, less waste and more design options have drawn aerospace firms to invest in additive layer manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, though it may be years before parts made this way are common in planes and weapons. In 3D printing, components are made by building up layers of titanium or other raw materials using computer-driven machines, compared with traditional casting which involves taking a piece of material and cutting away to create the desired part. The new technology has found a use in a wide range of industries, from designing shoes to dental technology, because it means complex prototypes and products can be shaped much more quickly and with much less wastage of expensive materials. Analysts predict rapid growth over the next decade, which could boost the shares of companies that make the printing machines, such as 3D Systems, Stratasys, ExOne , Voxeljet, Arcam and SLM Solutions . Another big company in the sector is EOS of Germany. A McKinsey report this year estimated 3D printing could have an economic impact of up to $550 billion a year by 2025, mainly from consumer uses and manufacturing. The technology is expected to have far-reaching consequences for the aerospace industry too, and especially the maintenance repair and overhaul business, because it reduces the time and effort needed to produce parts or find spare parts. Because 3D parts are often lighter, the process could also have a profound impact on the way aircraft and satellites are designed. Aerospace and defence companies such as Airbus, Lockheed Martin, GE, Pratt & Whitney, GKN and BAE Systems are all investing in the technology, with BAE executives calling it “game-changing” at the Farnborough Airshow. GE Aviation announced plans to invest $50 million in its own additive facility in Alabama, while GKN said it was leading a consortium in a 13.4 million pound ($22.9 million) additive manufacturing research project. In some cases, the technology is already being tried out. The U.S. Navy, for example, is experimenting with 3D printers that could go aboard its aircraft carriers to print out replacement parts on site instead of waiting days or weeks for parts to be found and delivered. Lockheed’s space business, meanwhile, has a 3D part flying on a NASA spacecraft called Juno that was launched in 2011, and is working with the U.S. Air Force to qualify parts that could be used on military satellites in the future. Still, industry watchers caution it will be a while before the technolA2Z METALWORKER

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 ogy will be in widespread use. GKN is looking at projects in its aerospace business and its metallurgy unit for the powders that form the basis of the process, but says it will take a while to generate profits.“It could be very important to GKN but it’s a long way off. It’s 10 years at least before it’s important,” Chief Executive Nigel Stein told Reuters. While widely used in prototyping, it’s mostly only small, non-critical parts such as brackets for Airbus’s new A350 jet, hooks, or camera stands for fighter jets, that have been manufactured so far using the process. That’s mainly due to stringent safety testing in the industry, where new technological innovations or even getting the use of mobile phones approved on flights can take years. “It’s great for prototyping, but when it comes to production, it has to earn its way,” said David Joyce, CEO of GE Aviation. GE has said it can use the technology to create a prototype for a traditional turbine blade in two weeks, compared with 36 weeks for traditional manufacturing methods. Before the technology can be used in structural parts onboard planes, companies first need to create a database to provide information on the properties of the materials used. “Being able to replace parts such as seat buckles and door handles

without massive lead times is really interesting. If you can win hearts and minds that way, then you can move onto structural applications,” he said. The technology opens new design possibilities too. “Where we drill a hole in a part for the cooling air to run through, today we’re limited by a straight hole,” said Allen Paxson, executive vice president at engine maker CFM. “Additive manufacturing allows you to drill a hole to be any shape you want. It could even be a corkscrew.” CFM, a joint venture between GE and Safran, is taking the technology a step further and giving it a tougher test. The fuel nozzles on its new LEAP engine, due to enter into service in 2016, are made using a 3D printing process and GE is investing $50 million into an additive facility in Alabama. BAE Systems, which has used 3D printed plastic parts as protective covers for items such as radio and shafts on the UK’s fleet of ageing Tornado fighter jets, is working with Cranfield university on a much larger metallic part - a 1.2 metre long titanium component known as a spar. The piece takes 37 hours to produce, compared with around 12-18 months previously, BAE said. It hopes the technology will be ready to move out of the research phase within 2.5-3 years. Colorado State University Hitches New Micro Electric Rides Researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) will get the opportunity to shed some light on the true value of electric vehicles after it was one of four universities in the county selected to receive all-electric micro vehicles. CSU joins the University of Pittsburgh, University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin in receiving the small electronic cars. The vehicles will help drive sustainable transportation research projects by giving campus employees access to the four University Electric Vehicles. (UEVs), provided by Washington D.C.-based education research company Internet2 and Chicago-based electronic vehicle company Innova UEV. “[CSU] has an outstanding history of research and engagement in not only the field of electrified transportation, but also in improving the sustainability of the University community,” said Patrick Burns, vice president for IT at Colorado State. Tablet-size computers will control the advanced technologies of the UEVs, and use the university’s Wi-Fi network to log operational data for analysis. In addition, campus employees looking to use a UEV can check their Internet2 InCommon app to see where available vehicles are located. “With the Innova vehicles in the University motor pool, campus employees will have the opportunity to choose a unique and innovative vehicle option when they need to make off-campus trips,” said Scott Baily, director of Academic Computing & Networking Services and a principal investigator on the Innova project. CSU currently has charging stations to accommodate six electric vehicles installed around campus, and plans to expand that to 10 by August.Source: Denver Business Journal

Commercial Aviation Market Soaring: Boeing Increasing demand from low-cost airlines and booming airline travel in Asia – China in particular – drove Boeing to raise its forecast for new airplanes. “It’s a market that’s exceeded our expectations,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing,Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “With new and more efficient airplanes entering service, the growth in air travel is being driven by customers who want to fly where they want, A2Z METALWORKER

when they want.” Boeing’s 20-year industry forecast calls for 36,770 new airplanes over the next 20 years. That’s an increase of 4.2 percent compared to last year’s forecast. “We believe we’re well positioned for future growth,” said Tinseth. Narrow body boom - The biggest growth in new airplanes is expected to come in the narrow body market. Boeing believes the industry will need 25,680 single-aisle planes over the next 20 years. “The single-aisle market is the backbone of the airline system,” said Tinseth. Boeing’s narrow body 737 has long been the most popular plane sold by the company.

Both planes will be in demand by low-cost airlines adding service on new routes over the next 20 years. China, Asia booming - Another reason single-aisle planes are in demand is the rapidly growing airline markets in Asia, especially China. In fact, Boeing expects the Asia Pacific region to require 13,460 new planes by 2033, with majority being single-aisle planes. China Eastern Airlines this month announced plans to start a low-cost carrier. The airline, which is run by the government, gave no indication when it will start its budget airline but, like other discount carriers, it will likely rely almost exclusively on single-aisle planes.

By late 2017 Boeing will start delivering the 737 MAX, a newer, more fuel-efficient version of the 737 which has already has a backlog of more than two thousand orders.

“Based on the overwhelming amount of orders and deliveries, we see the heart of the single-aisle market in the 160-seat range,” said Tinseth. “There’s no question the market is converging to this size, where network flexibility and cost efficiency meet.”

Boeing’s competitor, Airbus, will start delivering its new narrow body plane, the A320neo late next year.

Through the first half of this year, Boeing has delivered 342 new planes while the total for Airbus was 303. A2Z METALWORKER

Q3 Economic Outlook Revises 2014 Equipment And Software Investment Growth Forecast To 2.6% Investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 2.6 percent in 2014, according to the Q3 update to the 2014 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released last month by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. The Foundation revised its 2014 equipment and software investment forecast to 2.6 percent, down from 4.2 percent growth forecast in its Q2 Update to the 2014 Annual Outlook released in April. The Q3 report expects equipment and software investment to have modest sector growth during the rest of the year after a weak start. The Foundation report, which is focused on the $827 billion equipment leasing and finance industry, forecasts 2014 equipment investment and capital spending in the United States and evaluates the effects of various related and external factors in play currently and into the foreseeable future. William G. Sutton, CAE, President of the Foundation and President and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, said, “The Foundation’s Outlook report reflects a slowing in GDP and equipment investment growth due to a weak first quarter this year that resulted in part from the extremely cold winter. The rebound in Q2 is slower than anticipated, as recent data from the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s Monthly Leasing and Finance Index and the Foundation’s Monthly Confidence Index reflect. We do, however, anticipate that equipment investment will rise in the second half of the year as economic conditions improve and business confidence continues to recover.” Highlights from the study include: • The U.S. economy is expected to grow 1.5 percent in 2014, revised from 2.8 percent. • The downsides of the harsh winter, which included a 2.9 percent contraction in real GDP in the first quarter, should prove temporary, as the housing recovery, energy renaissance and accommodative credit markets support second-half growth. • Equipment and software investment declined at an annualized rate of 1.8 percent in Q1 2014, following the 8.9 percent surge in Q4 2013. • Credit supply continues to improve, and credit demand has held A2Z METALWORKER

steady for all business sizes. • Equipment and software investment is expected to steadily grow over the next 6 months across most verticals, according to the Foundation-Keybridge U.S. Equipment & Software Investment Momentum Monitor. The Momentum Monitor, which tracks 12 equipment and software investment verticals, forecasts the following equipment investment activity: o Agriculture machinery investment will likely see slow growth, and potentially a contraction, through the rest of 2014, as both farm yields and commodity prices remain subdued. o Construction machinery investment will continue to experience strong growth, and the year-over-year growth figures will begin to trend positive as multiple quarters of expansion take hold amidst the housing recovery. o Materials handling equipment investment will experience stronger growth over the next 3 to 6 months. o All other industrial equipment investment will likely see moderate growth over the next 3 to 6 months as the “re-shoring” of manufacturing continues to be a dominant economic story in 2014. o Medical equipment investment will grow, but begin to level off near the end of the year. o Mining and oilfield machinery will experience improving growth through the middle of the year but will begin to level off at the end of the year. o Aircraft investment will likely experience about long-term average growth for the year. o Ships and boats investment will likely rebound to an above-average pace through the end of this year. o Railroad equipment investment will improve from its recent contraction toward modest growth. o Investment in trucks will exhibit high-single digit growth over the next 3 to 6 months as economic activity improves and competitive diesel prices keep trucking transport competitive. o Computers investment will remain muted in the short-term after strong replacement demand over the past few quarters. o Software investment will be moderate in the next 3 to 6 months as companies continue to make investments in software and cloud technologies.

Unapproved Device Buys Time For New Pair Of Lungs The AP reported how an experimental machine, Hemolung, retrieved from Canada, saved a patient needing a double lung transplant. The AP noted that patient Jon Sacker’s “struggle highlights a critical void:There is no fully functioning artificial lung to buy time for someone awaiting a transplant,” in contrast to implanted heart pumps for “patients who need a new heart” or a dialysis machines for people with failing kidneys. “It seems like

it should be possible for the lung as well,” said Dr. Andrea Harabin of the NIH. The article noted that “NIH-funded researchers are working to develop wearable ‘respiratory assist devices’ that could do the lungs’ two jobs – supplying oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide – without tethering patients to a bulky bedside machine.”

Air Force Engineer Develops “Innovative” Method To Track Space Debris An article jointly prepared by the Partnership for Public Service, “a group seeking to enhance the performance of the federal government,” and the Washington Post reports on Air Force Research Laboratory senior engineer Richard Rast having “created an innovative way” to track space debris, “a system that could become a cost-effective supplement to the current processes used by the Air Force and NASA that rely on expensive telescopes, radar systems and considerable manpower for analysis.” Rast’s system “uses a series of small telescopes developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory that capture the faint light signals entering the lens” and then “converts the camera photos into a movie, where he uses the human eye’s sensitivity to detect variations between frames to separate man-made objects from the star background and identify objects the size of just a few centimeters.” The article notes that space debris threatens both the ISS and military and commercial satellites. NBC Nightly News reported that numbers from the Federal government show that “where earning potential is concerned, what you study in college is worth way more than where you go to college.” The government examined data from the class of 2008 and found that those “who went to state schools earned about the same as those who went to private colleges, about $50,000 a year.” The real differences could be seen in choice of major, as those “who studied science, math, technology, or engineering tend to be making $15,000 more per year.”
