Editor’s Corner Change Is Inevitable… “Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change.” Stephen Covey Change is what we do in this era of increased business. Who knew we would really be busy? We hoped for it, we prayed for it, and now we have it, and so we must change the way we do business! Sometimes we need to be careful of what we wish for; increased business, more machines, more employees, more square footage, a better ERP system, better health care to attract better team members, and more benefits for our current and new company members, more money, more headaches… what??? Today, we are all experiencing a rush of new wealth; more of everything. Our businesses are growing and with that a new job or ten and new responsibilities for growing the business! It’s a great place to be, but indeed a challenging one! When you are growing your business it is a mad rush to keep order and profitability through growth!

Announcements Continued excellence in the industry. The Americas’ largest manufacturing show, IMTS 2018 will occupy more than 1.3 million sq. ft. of exhibit space inside of Chicago’s McCormick Place from 10-15 September 2018. In addition to displays and demonstrations of more than 2,400 exhibitors, the show provides hundreds of conference sessions and technology presentations. To maximize visitors’ time and experience IMTS groups technologies together into Pavilions. There are 10 Pavilions spread throughout the four buildings of McCormick Place. Visitors can download and use MyShow Planner to make itineraries, schedule meetings and navigate the show floor. In July, the IMTS app (which includes MyShow Planner) will be available for download to your mobile device. Visitors like Rick Hoffman, founder and CEO of EIMCo, a 150-person manufacturing operation in Farley, Iowa, appreciate that technologies are grouped by Pavilion at IMTS because they can compare options. “I can check out a new technology and then walk a few feet to another booth and see what the competition is doing. All that information is in one area where I can evaluate the options side-by-side,” says Hoffman. “Rather than flying across the country, I walk across an aisle. the East Building. Level 3 of the East Building , as usual, will showcase the Controls & CADCAM, EDM and Quality Assurance Pavilions. Fred Mason, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Quality Vision International (QVI), says that, “A lot of people don’t realize that IMTS 2018 is an unmatched opportunity to connect with experts and see a wide range of metrology technology. With more than 175 exhibitors in the Quality Assurance Pavilion, it’s actually the year’s biggest North American quality show.” Mason notes that IMTS isn’t just about product displays, but about exhibitors collaborating with visitors to address their needs. “We encourage customers to bring a part or print so we can start solving their metrology problem right on the show floor,” he says. “Also, with CNC operators often responsible for measuring their own parts, it’s more important than ever for machinists and shop owners to understand how the broad array of automated inspection technologies now available can boost productivity.” Peter Claus, a CNC Supervisor at HFW Industries in Buffalo, N.Y., is doing exactly that. At IMTS 2014, he brought a group of young machinists, and “for IMTS 2018, this will be the first time I’m bringing our head inspector. We have a focus on new inspection equipment, specifically a programmable CMM.”

South and North Buildings The Metal Cutting Pavilion occupies all of Level 3 of the South Building, while Level 3 of the North Building houses the Fabrication & Lasers, Gear Generation and Abrasive/Machining/Sawing Pavilions. “You can find hidden gems everywhere on the show floor,” says Hoffman, who credits a recent IMTS visit with finding an orbitalTIG welding solution that reduced welding time from five minutes to less than 60 seconds. He found the TIG solution in a small booth at the back of the Fabrication & Lasers Pavilion. In the Metal Cutting Pavilion, he found an auto-loading lathe that reduced failure rate from 0.8 to 0.2 percent, reduced cycle time and earned EIMCo a multi-million-part contract. “If I didn’t come to IMTS, I’d fall behind. We have to constantly look for the next best thing,” says Hoffman, who has been attending the show since the 1980s. “At IMTS 2018, we will be looking for more high-speed load/ unload solutions.” West Building After evaluating machines, many attendees then head to the West Building to optimize their investment by visiting theTooling &Workholding Pavilion and now the new Tooling & Workholding Annex. For example, while walking the show floor at IMTS 2016, Geno Lemery discovered special cubic boron nitride (CBN) cutting tools from a previously unknown tooling supplier. He reported finding a cutting tool solution that doubled tool life and reduced costs by 35 percent, saving the company more than $100,000 annually. Matt Guse, President of MRS Machining, a 47-person machine shop in Augusta,Wis., says that at IMTS 2016, one of his employees learned about “devibe bars,” such as the Silent Tools™ from Sandvik. Their advanced dampening qualities enable machining up to 10X bar diameter, while carbide reinforced adapters are optimized for overhangs up to 14X bar diameter. Extending boring depth capabilities has reduced cycle time, opened machine capacity and enabled MRS Machining to bring in more customers. “We would’ve never learned about this solution if we didn’t come down to IMTS,” says Guse, noting how visiting the Tooling & Workholding Pavilion is an essential part of his business strategy. “We take complex parts, apply technology and reduce costs. JOIN OUR TEAM TODAY! 562-690-7616 | WWW.NORTHSOUTHMACHINERY.COM North Kingstown, RI - July 31, 2018 - Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division has launched PC-DMIS 2018 R2, the latest edition of the world’s most popular measurement software. This is the second of two major releases scheduled for PC-DMIS in 2018, with continued service pack updates to ensure maximum reliability of the platform. PC-DMIS 2018 R2 introduces a new reporting workflow, making it easier than ever to create customized reports with simple drag and drop and an intuitive slideshow-style interface. A new QuickPath tool expands on existing QuickFeature functionality to simplify feature creation with a safe path. PC-DMIS 2018 R2 also introduces the ability to add run charts from qs-STAT into the PC-DMIS report. Improved Probe Utility allows users to mark favorite tip configurations, create required tip angles by simply clicking on CAD, and buy replacements with Shopping Cart tools; a new e-Store is coming soon to hexagonmi. com. Improvements in the use of lasers, specifically for path creation and offline programming, are also featured in the new release. “PC-DMIS 2018 R2 continues the recent trend towards maximizing productivity in the three major metrology tasks: Creation, Execution, and Collaboration,” states Ken Woodbine, Product Line Manager for Metrology Software at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. “Creating measurement routines is even simpler and more intuitive with the addition of both QuickPath for adding motion in ‘walk up and measure’ applications and the offline path visualization and simulation for laser probes. Execution is also streamlined with improvements to our Inspect module, making it easier to control access to routines, and for operators to search and find routines and reports.

Collaboration is the why of metrology, and PC-DMIS continues to add support to work seamlessly with even more measurement devices and sensors. The introduction of Q-DAS Run Chart integration and Shopshot offers a fuller picture of production processes. The addition of Inspect Slideshow dimensional display helps users call out key dimensions, giving operators a clear go/no-go in real time.” User experience has been improved with a smaller XactMeasure dialog window that consumes less space in the Graphics Display Window and improved FCF editor design with new icons for defining or adding datums and second single segment or composite FCF. Slideshow, the real-time dimensional reporting tool, is now free to use under a PCDMIS Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA). Inspect 3.2 now gives more control over which routines are accessible, has improved search filters for routines and reports, and displays the last execution time and duration for each routine. Other notable improvements within PC-DMIS include a new 2D Radius Gauge for quick checks on the go, added MoveInspect XR8 support, improved QuickFixture workflow with snap-to-grid capability, NX 12 DCI and Catia v5 R27 DCI & DCT support, added support for the HPL-5.8 sensor, improved Q-DAS support, added Measurement Strategy Editor parameter sets, and Vero SMIRT integration. PC-DMIS 2018 R2 is available to download immediately. More information is available through local Hexagon commercial operations and dealers. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

The Institute for Supply Management last month said its manufacturing index rose to 60.2 in June from 58.7 in May. Numbers above 50 indicate activity is expanding across the manufacturing sector, while numbers below 50 signal contraction. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected a 58.1 reading for June. The details of the report were largely upbeat, with the new orders, production and employment indexes increasing.

“Demand remains robust, but the nation’s employment resources and

supply chains continue to struggle,” said Tim Fiore, who oversees the ISM survey of factory purchasing and supply managers. The index in February hit 60.8, its highest level since May 2004, before easing in March and April. It picked up in May and again in June. Broader economic growth appeared to pick up in the just-completed second quarter after a modest slowdown in the early months of 2018. The unemployment rate declined below 4% this spring, and forecasters expect solid growth this year, supported by recent tax cuts and strong consumer sentiment.Source: Wall Street Journal; By: Sharon Nunn

Robots Can Elevate Human Role in Manufacturing Says US Agency Manufacturing in the U.S will build on its current strength by using “technology to empower American potential and ingenuity,” according to the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM). The institute, which is a member of Manufacturing USA, a network of regional institutes, looks to robotics to bring about the change. Robotics can “elevate, not eliminate the human roles in manufacturing,” ARM says. The group’s mission is to help train the future workforce for the high-value careers will determine the future of manufacturing. And it focuses on lowering the economic, technical, and operational barriers that companies experience in trying to adopt robotic technology. In the workforce area, it is creating programs to prepare the workforce to work in an Industry 4.0 mindset, collaboratively with robotic solutions in a safe, high-satisfaction environment. Depending on the project, the group impact students at every education stage,

from students and young adults to displaced workers. To achieve the group has created specific goals. –Build ARM’s Educational Partner Network to promote broader participation in certification and educational programs. –Inform, educate and support SMEs through our expanding network of industries involved in education and workforce development programs. –Train, certify and offer internships to students and educators. –Address diversity through research-based STEM and industry-recognized ARM certifications. And to meet these goals the group realizes that it must overcome challenges such as negative perceptions about careers in manufacturing as well as regional skills gaps. Automakers And Other Manufacturers May Need To Give White-Collar Perks To Fill Manufacturing executives in the United States and other developed economies – whether involved in the production of automobiles, aircraft, trucks, or combines – agree:The single biggest threat to their operations over the next decade is a shortage of labor. The reason behind the gap relates to demographics; an oversized generation – baby boomers – is starting to retire, and not enough of the next three generations are interested in taking their place. Most people think this deficit is concentrated in skilled labor categories, and there’s no doubt that finding candidates with the right training for certain jobs is part of the problem. But the shortfall is affecting many employment categories – skilled and unskilled labor. Rather than a skills gap, the manufacturing world is facing a numbers gap – literally there aren’t enough eligible candidates applying for most job openings. This means any solution aimed at shrinking the gap must go beyond offers of more training and focus on retention as much as recruiting. Companies must figuratively begin to build a “moat” around the current A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

24 • AUG - SEPT ‘18

workforce, making it difficult for other employers to lure workers away with more attractive compensation offers. Retention is just as important as recruitment, given the cost of hiring and training a new worker, which can run anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per worker – a number which doesn’t include the negative impact to quality and efficiency from the incorporation of new workers who are less familiar with the product and processes. Competition for workers A necessary step in making manufacturing jobs more attractive and building that protective barrier around your workforce is recognizing that the competition for dependable employees is fierce. Rivals include growing sectors, such as technology and healthcare, that are currently less prone to layoffs than manufacturing has been. Job security may not be something manufacturers can promise, so they need to be more creative. Automakers and other manufacturers are also battling a rising rate of absenteeism, with some plants reaching as high as 20 percent. That means that employers must look for candidates willing to both accept jobs and show up every day. Add to all that, the reality of a record-low 3.8 percent unemployment rate, and manufacturers can begin to appreciate the daunting nature of their challenge.

So where to begin? Automakers and other manufacturers can look to some of the same strategies their engineers and marketing and sales departments use to design and sell products: Find pain points and design products that help prospective customers fix them. Design-thinking in HR Human capital departments should consider this same kind of design-thinking approach, which involves creating different personas – in this case, of their workers – and mapping their journeys. Employers can set themselves apart from rivals by mapping these journeys beyond the walls of factories and into their employees’ homes, providing ways to reduce both the complications and stress in their lives. To do this effectively, human capital must recognize what drives employees when looking for, accepting, and changing jobs. There are basic minimums – the “must haves” – which include competitive wages and benefits. But there are other factors that involve lifestyle and convenience, and building that moat starts with taking a more empathetic approach to workers on the assembly line who sometimes feel like they’re treated like the robots they fear will replace them one day. Offering perks and services is something we see more often with the treatment of professionals, but today it’s a strategy widely used by tech companies to entice prospective employees and then build a moat around them. In addition to a paycheck and benefits, tech companies acknowledge that employees value flexibility in scheduling; being offered healthy, free or inexpensive meals so they don’t have to leave the work site; and free or discounted transportation solutions to commuting headaches. These kinds of perks make leaving companies harder because it means those pains would return in the next job. White-collar perks The result of this exercise is a more individualized understanding of the workforce and what they go through

Announcements & part Releases each day. For example, maybe the most stressful of the day isContinued leaving work, picking up children and trying to cobble something together for dinner. If the factory offered pre-portioned meal kits to pick up on the way out the door, they just helped the employee’s life be a little easier and, perhaps, healthier. “How can I live without this?”, an employee may think if approached by another company to change jobs. But family responsibilities also bring with it other headaches. Consider on-site emergency daycare or urgent care to help employees handle problems without missing a full day of work. One audacious solution could be to issue smart phones for everyone as a method to roll out company policy, handle absenteeism, scan quick-response QR codes for training modules, share rides to the plant, and learn about daily work schedules or corporate announcements. It may seem extravagant, but for workers who don’t normally get such perks it may be a deal-clincher. These solutions no doubt come with a price tag – and one some manufacturers may think short-term isn’t worth it, hoping the problem will go away. But they need to remember – the status-quo is not a cost-free option either. Source: Forbes; By: Oliver Wyman A2Z MANUFACTURING SW •

Aerojet spokeswoman Mary Engola declined to disclose the value of the motor. For more than 60 years, Aerojet has fabricated solid-propellant and other rocket engines in Rancho Cordova. This jettison motor will go through a full stress test during a launch of an Orion test vehicle next April. That launch in Florida will be the last test before a human crew is launched on the Orion, which NASA says could occur at the end of 2019. Aerojet has tested the jettison motor on the ground successfully several times in Rancho Cordova. A fully functioning NASA Orion launch in April will test the crew capsule’s launch abort system, which includes the jettison rocket attached to the top of the launch vehicle. The jettison motor is part of the crew abort system to be used if there is a failure at launch or in early stages. It is also used if the launch is successful to pull the crew capsule away from the second-stage rocket motor. It is one of the few systems that is used in both a successful and an aborted launch, Engola said. The jettison motor burns through 26 gallons of solid propellant in a 1.5-second burn, which produces 40,000 pounds of thrust — enough to lift two city busses off the ground instantly, said engineers at a test in Rancho Cordova in 2016. Aerojet Rocketdyne Makes Motor In Rancho Cordova For Mars Mission The latest rocket motor made to jettison the crew capsule of the Orion spacecraft has been cast at Aerojet Rocketdyne’s plant in Rancho Cordova. The Orion jettison motor, which generates 40,000 pounds of thrust, was cast recently at the local headquarters of the company. The parent company, Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc. is based in El Segundo, where it moved in 2016 to be closer to more defense contractors and to the Air Force Space Command’s Space and Missile Systems Center. Parking Tin: Past Delays Reportedly Piling Up Unfinished 737S At Boeing Supply chain delays have culminated in dozens of unfinished 737s being parked wherever space can be found at the Boeing Co.’s factory in Renton, Washington. According to a report from the SeattleTimes, more than 40 of the narrow-body jets are now scattered around the facility and the adjacent airport awaiting completion as Boeing (NYSE: BA) and suppliers battle to keep up with rising production rates on

the program.

Those were cited by a Boeing spokesperson in the report as the primary reasons for the backup, as the impact of those previous delays on the production flow is now being felt.

FABRICATION

Spirit CEO Tom Gentile said this week during the company’s conference call following its second-quarter earnings report that the supplier caught back up on deliveries in June following the increase this year from 47 per month to 52 per month on the 737 line. But he also conceded that Spirit is still having issues getting all of its fuselage deliveries out consistently on time, noting that even minimal delays can result in those shipments arriving to Boeing out of sequence. And that can disrupt the tightly wound supply flow on the cash-driving single-aisle line for both companies.

MACHINING

“Our focus in the second half is to get to perfect, to get everything there in the right sequence and the right order consistently, so that the fuselages are there on time every day,” Gentile said. “And that’s what we’re really on track to do.” Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said earlier this month after his own company’s quarterly report that such “pressure points” in the supply chain will need to be worked through as the company moves to the planned next rate increase to 57 per month next year. And, he said, supplier capacity will be a critical factor in decisions around future increases, though he also reiterated that Boeing has still been able to meet all its delivery commitments to its customers despite the supply delays. But Boeing workers who spoke anonymously to the SeattleTimes sounded more of an alarm than executives, with one describing the supplier delays and skilled labor shortages at the manufacturer similar to those faced by Spirit as a “perfect storm” that isn’t improving.

CRAFTSMANSHIP. ON TIME.

Spirit Aerosystems fell behind earlier in the year on deliveries of the full fuselages it builds in Wichita for the 737, as did engine supplier CFM International.

THEY HAVE THE CAPACITY YOU NEED.

By all accounts, Allied Tool & Die Company has been successful during its past 6+ decades in their ability to support customers with their precision fabrication and machining needs. Today, the entire Allied team is proud to announce that they have effectively eliminated the bottleneck to gaining substantial new (production quantity) business with the addition of new technology and methodology with one goal in mind: CAPACITY. Allied Tool & Die Co. is a precision machine and fabrication business. The family owned and operated company, in business for 67 years now, operates in a 36,000 square foot set of buildings in the heart of downtown Phoenix, and has a 20,000 square foot satellite facility in Mexico to support its US customers’ Mexico operations. The AS9100 Revision D, Nadcap accredited company manufactures parts for aerospace, medical, communications, and commercial industries with their products shipping throughout the world. CEO Bill Jordan (3rd generation family owner) took over the company’s management and strategy in 2015. Allied Tool & Die changed from maintaining the status quo to carefully planned and consistent growth. The plan required strategic investments in infrastructure and equipment, changing the business model, reorganizing departments, and focusing on efficiency. One area that did not need changing is the company culture and employee benefits. The Jordan family has always believed that investing in the employees will attract and retain top performers in the industry. Allied strives to create a culture of happy and motivated employees via the following:

Great Benefits: Allied is always searching for ways to add

value to their benefit programs. The company understands 28 • AUG - SEPT ‘18

He is a member of the board of directors for the Arizona Tooling & Machining Association (ATMA) where he chairs the workforce development program. He also is a board member of the Arizona Precision Manufacturing Apprenticeship Program (AzPMAP) and Allied has hired 2 apprentices through this program. The company recently became involved with Phoenix R.I.S.E. (Reach and Invest Summer Program), a summer youth workforce-training program, and will be taking on 2 student interns this summer. Through the workforce development program ATMA companies have placed 13 youth with internship positions this summer with Phoenix RISE.

Great Place to Work: Since the company is a great place to work, superior

employees stay. The average tenure is 8.6 years for the workforce of nearly 90. CNC Process and Machining Manager Jamie Lerma says that the company does an excellent job of hiring both raw and experienced talent where promotion from within is a core value. Company-wide quarterly meetings are held to discuss performance metrics and give employee recognition. The first quarter meeting of 2018 even had onsite massage therapy.

Some of the Best Talent in the Industry: Allied is always striving to hire

talent with a strategic goal in mind: producing quality parts on time at an economical price for their customers. It is not a matter of just filling an open position or human capital but finding those personnel that truly complement Allied’s objectives and mission statement. By encouraging a team environment, employees gain a voice and feel a sense of pride in the finished product they have helped to create. Allied believes in cross-training and giving employees the opportunity to shine by rising to challenges inherent to the manufacturing environment. In fact, many employees who have left Allied for various reasons end up returning due to the unique culture that is Allied Tool & Die Company!

EXPANSION Jeff Moorhead, Vice President/ General Manager with the company, says, “Our growth was slowed due to our capacity. We have a relatively new customer experiencing extremely high growth. As we have proposed taking on more of their work, this is what we hear, “You guys are phenomenal, your pricing is great and your quality is outstanding. You can’t meet the lead times for the quantities we require.” Bill says, “The initial capital expenditures from 2015, particularly new machine tool and software purchases, have now been paid and it is time to embark on another round of major capital purchases.” He continued, “We are ready to take on new customers with dramatically increased capacity.”

Fabrication a.

Just 3 years ago, Allied Tool & Die purchased their first fiber laser, a 3000-Watt HK Supercell HX 300G, which replaced their C02 laser, and resulted in laser cutting that was 8 times faster. A year later, they purchased another fiber laser, effectively doubling their laser capacity with the purchase of an IPG Photonics 2000 Watt LaserCube.

The new locomotives are expected to be delivered to the North County Transit District between March and June of 2021. The transit district provides more than 10 million passenger trips annually through North

San Diego County and into downtown San Diego. Meanwhile, the Siemens Mobility train factory in Sacramento is expanding, having pulled permits from Sacramento County last month for a 77,258-square-foot expansion of its manufacturing buildings. Siemens builds light-rail trains, heavy trains, rolling stock and locomotives at its 600,000-square-foot plant on a 60-acre campus at 7338 French Road, just southeast of Sacramento. In June, Siemens pulled a permit for $9.1 million in construction at the factory, where Siemens has been making trains for more than 30 years. The company also has a repair facility at McClellan Park. In April, the local factory received a $30 million order for four Chargers from the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, which operates the Altamont Corridor Express, or ACE route. That route, which runs between Stockton and San Jose, also received funding in April to expand that service into Sacramento. By: By Mark Anderson – Sacramento Business Journal

Lockheed Martin Delivered The 52Nd C-5M Super Galaxy The delivery completes the RERP upgrade, which extends the service life of the C-5 fleet until the 2040s. Lockheed Mar tin began RERP d e ve l o p m e n t wo r k i n 2 0 0 1 . RERP incorporates more than 70 improvements that improve reliability, efficiency, maintainability, and availability. RERP included changes or modifications to the airframe structure; environmental and pneumatic systems; hydraulic systems, electrical system; fuel system; landing gear; and flight controls. The heart of the system is the GE F138 turbofan engine (known as a CF680C2L1F in the commercial world) de-rated to 50,000 lb of thrust on the C-5M.This engine provides 22% more thrust than the out-of-productionTF39 turbofans on the earlier C-5A/B/C aircraft. The engines also allow the C-5M to meet the FAA’s Stage 4 noise reduction requirements. These changes, taken together, result in a 22% increase in thrust, a shorter takeoff roll; a 58% improvement in climb rate; allows the C-5M to cruise – at maximum gross weight – in the Communication/Navigation/ Surveillance / Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) flight environment; and greatly enhanced fuel efficiency and less tanker support demand.

Affordable, Accessible Metal Additive Manufacturing Manufacturing has been a way of life since the first industrial revolution. By the 1980s, advanced factories created products in ways never before imaginable. That same decade, a new form of manufacturing with the promise to revolutionize the way we make things was born—additive manufacturing (AM). Unlike traditional manufacturing processes that stamp, extrude, inject, or subtract material to create, additive builds up an item layer by layer. The first additive systems utilized stereolithography, where a laser cures a thin layer of photo curable resin to create a part. At first, users were restricted to a few materials and early machines offered limited possibilities. Like early computer systems, the first additive machines were prohibitively expensive, bulky and turned out pieces not suitable for final use. Initially, manufacturers utilized the technology for rapid prototyping, eliminating time-intensive and expensive moldmaking and other traditional manufacturing processes used in prototyping at the time. The new technology also allowed for iterative designs to optimize for final production. However, engineers sought to unlock the potential of AM to be used with any material —especially metal. While polymers, the first materials available for AM, are widely used in products, additive’s true potential could not be fully realized without the strength, versatility, and heat and wear resistance of metal. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

34 • AUG - SEPT ‘18

Over the years, new processes have been developed for metal AM, including binder jetting, direct energy deposition, and electron beam melting. As these methods evolved, the range of materials, part precision, speed and machine size have all improved. Today’s metal additive machines are more accessible to manufacturers than their predecessors but remain a more significant investment than many polymer systems. Differences in price, accessibility, ease of use, knowledge, and final part quality have limited the investment in metal AM by smaller manufacturers. Improvements enabled by additive have been limited to using polymers or having metal parts produced through a service bureau or contract manufacturer. For small and medium-sized operations, this provides a way to test the technology before investing in larger scale operations. Over the past five years, several companies have announced or released machines that put metal within the reach of nearly every manufacturer. Smaller, cheaper and easier to use, these new systems allow manufacturers to gain experience with metal additive methods before investing in larger, more production-level machines. No longer are engineers limited to prototyping and additive manufacturing with polymers. These new machines, while differing in their exact process, tend to follow a similar path to the final product. While many industrial metal AM machines produce final parts in one or two steps, often sintering the metal on a layer-by-layer basis, many of the more affordable machines use a method first developed at MIT. First, a green part in which the metal is not fully fused into the final

product is built. This part then may go through a process to remove the primary binding material before being placed into a furnace to finish the final sintering of the metal and/ or infuse metal into the open spaces left by the binder. As metal additive technologies continue to improve and new techniques, materials and machines are created, manufacturers will continue to see more affordable and accessible metal additive solutions. With this, additive manufacturing will further fulfill the disruptive potential first envisioned when the technology was invented in the 1980s. Source: Advanced Manufacturing; By: Maria Conrado

Boeing Sending Last Shuttle Commander Chris Ferguson Back to Space Chris Ferguson, who led the final space shuttle mission, will make his fourth spaceflight when he and NASA astronauts Eric Boe and Nicole Mann take the new Boeing CST-100 Starliner commercial crew spacecraft to the International Space Station. The three pioneers will help restore American access to space from U.S. soil, a capability that ended when the shuttle was retired seven years ago. Mann will also make history as the first female astronaut on the inaugural crewed flight of a new U.S. spacecraft. “We’re immensely proud of Chris and thrilled he will be part of first Starliner crew,” Leanne Caret, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, said. “We congratulate all the astronauts chosen to fly to the space station on commercially developed systems. We’re taking important steps for this nation and toward development of a thriving commercial space ecosystem.” Ferguson has been an integral part of the Starliner program since retiring from NASA and joining Boeing in 2011. He spent more than 40 days in space for NASA during three shuttle missions. “The engineer in me always thought if I’m not flying a spaceship, I ought to be part of the team building one,” Ferguson said. “My fingerprints are all over the Starliner and I’m

Stanford University Researchers Create Better Cardiac Catheter Devices with 3D Printing

A heat map of the electrical activity of a heart projected onto a computersimulated model of the right atrium. The heart disorder atrial fibrillation, or AFib, is the most common rhythm disorder, and causes patients to have irregular, often rapid heartbeats, which messes up blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. AFib affects over 6 million Americans, and causes more than 750,000 hospitalizations every year. While some AFib patients are lucky enough to have only a few problems caused by the disorder, others are not so lucky, and suffer serious complications that can require medications or even surgery. Surgeons use cardiac catheter devices to map a heart’s electrical activity, which can also be used to detect rhythm disturbances in a patient’s heartbeats. But these devices are often only one size, which makes it hard to catch these irregular heartbeats due to missed signals and spotty connections. A team of researchers from Stanford University is working to find new ways to build customized cardiac devices, and they’re using 3D printing to do it. Second-year medical student Kevin Cyr, who has a background in bioengineering, said, “I’m using 3D-printed tools to design cardiacmapping catheters, devices used by surgeons to map the electrical activity of the heart and find disturbances.” The devices are small, thin and flexible silicone membranes with tiny holes in a grid-like formation, each holding an electrode. It’s been a few years since we’ve seen anything about 3D printed cardiac catheters, which hopefully means that 3D printing the devices has only improved with time. Stanford’s research on surveying electricity in the heart began a few years ago under Anson Lee, MD, assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery. Cyr was interested in creating medical technologies that are able to move from research to clinical practice, and joined the team last year.

Existing one-size-fits-all cardiac catheters use electrodes to contact the heart’s surface and measure its electrical activity. The team kept the

electrodes, but customized the devices to fit each individual’s heart by recording an image file of the heart during an MRI or CT scan. “We can replicate that natural geometry and anatomy specific to that patient,” Cyr explained. This anatomy and geometry can then be applied to a custom, 3D printed device – a thin, flexible silicone membrane with a grid of holes, each of which holds a small electrode. The 3D printed devices can very precisely track electrical activity over a specific region once it’s placed on the heart atrium’s surface. “We can map in perfect detail this rectangular grid of information and not have to worry about missing signals, poor contact or things like that, which otherwise might throw out errors,” Cyr explained. The data the device records is sent to a computer, which then creates a recording depicting electrical activity at certain regions. The recordings are used to make a heatmap of this activity, which surgeons

then rely on to determine which regions require treatment. While Stanford’s 3D printed cardiac catheter devices are only used on the exterior layer of the heart at the moment, the researchers are working to see if they can develop them further, in order to also map the heart’s interior surface and measure rhythmic disturbances there more accurately. Using a soccer ball, Cyr demonstrates how the device conforms to the surface of a heart. According to Cyr, the research team will take another couple of years to refine their 3D printed cardiac catheter devices, which have yet to be tested on humans, though they have been conformed to soccer balls. While these devices are extremely helpful to the medical field, the main goal of the team’s research is to find the problem spots in human hearts where more irregular electrical activity happens, and then get rid of them in order to bring back a normal flow of electricity. by Sarah Saunders | 3D Printing A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Making Precision Machined Parts Since 1974

As part of our efforts to become leaner and more nimble, we said we would explore a mix of technical, go-to-market and investment partnerships with GE Digital, such as the partnership recently announced with Microsoft. There may be some noise in this shift, but it is completely consistent with our approach to how we are running the company: business units as the center of gravity controlling their growth plan, which includes digital strategies and using software to make operations more efficient. This operating system will ensure GE is closer to customers and our teams are even more integrated and therefore better able to adapt. Our commitment to digital and supporting our customers with digital applications remains our highest priority.

GE’s Long Digital Game

GE announced a major change in how we run the company, focusing decision-making in the businesses and empowering our leaders with tools and responsibilities to drive growth and innovation — not from the center but from deep in our businesses.

We remain bullish on the IIoT and continue to develop new applications for it. Today, many GE businesses, their customers and outside partners are benefiting from GE’s Predix software and machine-learning tools, using them to drive productivity and increase the efficiency of their operations. They include large power companies like Exelon, Invenergy and NewYork’s NYPA; the Australian flag carrier Qantas; the Swiss maker of elevators and other equipment Schindler Group; and the Brazilian steel company Gerdau. An app called FlightPulse, for example, which began as a collaboration between GE and Qantas, shows pilots data from every flight of their airline, including fuel savings and areas for improving fuel efficiency. “FlightPulse was designed by pilots for pilots,” Captain Mike Galvin, head of fleet operations at Qantas, told GE Reports. “It provides pilots with flight data in a very visual way, allowing them to see first-hand the amount of fuel used at different stages of a flight and how they can help to reduce carbon emissions.” Software is also playing a key role in preparing additive manufacturing — a group of technologies that includes 3D printing — for mass production, allowing engineers to run simulations as they perfect their parts. It’s clear that software remains critical to GE’s future.

Our approach to GE Digital is no different and fits closely to that strategy. We were the leader in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and GE Digital is a critical piece of how we solve industrial problems for our customers — by building software and other digital tools for power plants, airlines, hospitals and other industrial customers. Before customers and business partners started using our technology, GE deployed it inside its factories. Engineers fed data coming off GE machines to smart algorithms and used the insights to drive productivity and improve operations.Today, GE plants around the world are using software to lower A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Another digital system in the Predix portfolio, called Asset Performance Management (APM), for example, is helping utilities and airlines around the world monitor their turbines’ and jet engines’ health and efficiency, optimize their operations and keep them in service longer. Our Predix platform, coupled with the Predix APM and ServiceMax applications, enables SIG, a Swiss-based maker of food packaging machines, to track equipment performance and recommend optimal strategies for maintenance. I want to be clear. GE Digital will continue to grow its strong commercial business, focused on both GE and its industrial customers. We see strong long-term growth in our core industries. We also will leverage our partners to pursue the strong digital growth opportunities we are seeing beyond our core industries. The future is digital and GE will play a key role in it.

projected to grow from 13 billion dollars in 2016 to 36 billion in 2021. Furthermore, upwards of 75 percent of worldwide manufacturing operations might rely on 3D-printed tools, fixtures, and jigs for manufacturing finished goods. Leading fields where 3D printing will have a dramatic effect include aerospace, defense, and automobile design. Ongoing AI Revolution - Artificial intelligence will grow at a staggering 55.1 percent CAGR between 2016 and 2021, with spending projected to rise from 8 billion dollars to 72 billion. The report outlines the reasoning for this expected growth, with the overriding factor between the sheer number of potential use cases for AI in manufacturing. Modern machine learning provides ways for businesses to achieve better efficiency using techniques no human could uncover without AI assistance, and both computer vision and natural language processing have made tremendous strides that will be further fueled by strong investment. Robotics will benefit, but so will seemingly less tech-dependent activities, including scheduling and planning. Again, the industry can expect to become more nimble going forward, leading to more flexible and responsive industries in the future.

Study Reveals Hottest Trends in Industrial IoT Technology is having a major impact on manufacturing, and Deloitte, in conjunction with the Council on Competitiveness and Singularity University, recently released their Exponential Technologies in Manufacturing study to outline just how quickly change is expected. Advanced Robotics - The report outlines four industrial revolutions, the most recent of which started in 2010.While electronic automation has transformed manufacturing since the 1970s, smart automation is playing a pivotal role in technologies coming online today. By tying automation equipment more closely to artificial intelligence, Internet of Things sensors, and other contemporary technology, smart automation has the potential to lead to exponential change in the coming years. Investment is expected to soar: Spending projections see the 92 billion dollars spent on advanced robots in 2016 growing to 225 billion in 2021, resulting is a 19.7 percent compound annual growth rate. Rise of 3D Printing - 3D printing isn’t just for small businesses and novelty items: It’s playing an increasingly critical role in modern manufacturing. Tools and other components are major expenses in manufacturing, and 3D printing has advanced significantly, allowing companies to operate in a more nimble manner. With 3D printing, the cost of prototyping and ordering custom parts drops considerably, providing manufacturing opportunities not attainable in the past. With an expected CAGR of 22.3 percent, the 3D printing market is A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

42 • AUG - SEPT ‘18

Internet of Things Investment - Although investment in the Internet of Things will grow at a slower pace than the technologies outlined above, its 15.6 percent CAGR is still remarkable. Furthermore, IoT spending was already at 737 billion dollars, a figure that will grow to 1,521 billion in 2021. Much like AI, the generalizable nature of the IoT will make it essential technology, and it’s hard to imagine manufacturing scenarios where IoT sensors, along with proper analysis, won’t have an impact. IoT growth won’t be fueled primarily by manufacturing, as the fastest growing segments are projected to be found in the insurance, consumer, healthcare, and retail segments. Advances in any segment, however, are likely to be useful in other areas, which will prove beneficial to all sectors. Talent is Critical - Any time automation is mentioned, concerns about jobs are raised. While disruptive technology will affect job markets, it’s also leading to increased demand for talent, as AI and machine learning provide valuable information that must be carefully interpreted. When asked, CEOs around the globe discuss how critical talent is for remaining competitive, and demand will fuel higher salaries as companies compete for the best talent available. In the US, for example, over 80 percent of manufacturers claim to have difficulty finding qualified talent. Furthermore, 3.5 million jobs across the globe are likely to be created, leading to an increasing skills gap. New technology provides valuable opportunities for manufacturing and other fields, but it’s also placing pressure on C-level executives, as the cost of this new technology will demand responses for companies to remain viable. Executives will need to ensure they properly understand these new technologies and how they affect their segments, and they’ll need to uncover problems promptly to avoid being undercut by competitors. The best way to respond, according to Deloitte’s report, is to explore new ways of testing and implementing technology. Small autonomous teams, for example, will fail to meet their goals more often than not. Their breakthroughs, however, will be key to leveraging new technology effectively. Source: TechNative

Recognizing Women in Manufacturing with the STEP Ahead Awards The National Association of Manufacturers’ Manufacturing Institute is now accepting nominations for the 2019 STEP Ahead Awards to honor outstanding women in science, technology, engineering and production (STEP) careers. The STEP program is a key component of the Institute’s drive to address the workforce shortage crisis facing U.S. manufacturing, which is in part driven by the underrepresentation of women in the industry. Upward of 2 million manufacturing jobs are expected to go unfilled by 2025, and yet, women only account for 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce. The STEP Ahead Awards honor women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in STEP careers and recognize women at all levels of manufacturing.

The Intelligent Journey To The Factory Of The Future

Spindles for All Aerospace Applications Aluminum, Composite & Titanium Machining

GMN USA has it all!

We often speak about the technology (re)evolution that is driving the intelligent factory and Industry 4.0 –more robots, machines with embedded sensors that send signals to a networked factory, and machines that “talk” to each other and to the larger enterprise system. What we don’t often address is the role of the human in this intelligent factory operation. Pundits claim that the intelligent factory will replace workers with machines and will obsolete human intuition and decision-making through artificial intelligence (AI). What these pundits get wrong is that not every job can—or should—be displaced with technology.

Instead, we should be thinking about how technology enhances human tasks and performance—which is why we at Intel recently studied over 150 workers from the factory floor to the C-suite, to better understand manufacturing workers’ pain points, their beliefs about the future of their operations, and their best guess for future technologies. What we learned surprised us. Regardless of position, workers in today’s factories expect change, both for themselves and for their companies. In fact, many indicated that the worst possible scenario of the future is one in which there is no change. And these study participants predicted that sweeping changes need to happen in the next three to five years. While our results point to fewer humans in the future factory, it is clear that there are still tasks that will need human intervention. In fact, when we predict human roles in the future, the “Pit Boss” emerges as a new role. This person will be there “just in case” to monitor the outputs of all the sensors and AI recommendations and ensure that operations continue to run smoothly. Workers also predict that more mundane and repetitive tasks will go away, thanks to smart technologies, and they welcome this. In fact, workers predict their jobs will become more transparent, more strategic, and more creative. These same workers understand that their current skills are not necessarily ready for this transition. This is due to two gaps: (1) the skills gap and (2) the understanding gap. Both present serious challenges to those seeking a transition to an intelligent factory that is agile, highly reconfigurable, and able to produce products in small lots but with economies-of-scale prices. The skills gap is not a new concept. Simply put, today’s workers need to be more data-savvy. They need to understand how data collected over time can result in increased operational transparency, reducing downtime. They need to be process experts and digital experts. As workers develop a deeper appreciation for the predictive value of data, they also will learn to trust it and take recommended actions from this data. Today this trust is sorely lacking.

A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

46 • AUG - SEPT ‘18

In the near term however, there is a far greater gap that will affect the successful implementation of smart technologies—the understanding gap. In our study, workers are excited about the potential of “smart technologies” but seem to have only a limited understanding of the complexity of this tech. From the factory floor to the C-suite, workers possess what we call magical thinking—”If I can slap a black box onto my machine, I will immediately get dashboards that provide insights into operation and into the factory as a whole.” Before smart technology projects can yield operational and business value, this understanding gap must be bridged. We must be able to anticipate—and describe—the need for data collection at the machine level. This involves computing at or near the machine to manage bandwidth demands, and clearly translating operational efficiencies into AI algorithms. Many of these terms are not the normal lexicon of the factory, but need to become well-understood concepts. The future workers entering the manufacturing environment are digital natives who are comfortable with—and expect—data, in order to drive transparency. However, these digital natives lack production experience. The current workforce possesses production experience, but lacks data knowledge. We need training programs that link these two populations and their belief systems to implement the future intelligent factory. A successful intelligent factory of the future will embrace a digital culture where data informs decisions. Investments to get to this intelligent factory will need to be made in compute infrastructure, data management systems, integration of operational and information systems (the IT/OT convergence), and advanced algorithm software to cull insights from data streams. But the most important investments will need to be made in training—bringing the human in the loop along the intelligent factory journey. Industry Week; By: Irene Petrick
