America’s culture has always changed and evolved, but the main thing most hold on to are the values of a common belief in liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness and this is what helps us become one and promotes unity.

A friend of mine took 8 years to get here from his torn country through refugee camps and a lot of red tape. He finally became a US citizen and was very happy to work as a janitor at a small business. He worked hard. He had a passion in which he mopped his floor and cleaned, this was noticed by a manager and my friend was asked if he would like to learn a new vocation. He soaked up every bit of training and information and worked hard to get better at his new job. Passion, hard work, and the love of freedom pushed him to be one of the best in his field. He owns a thriving manufacturing business now and all of his children are educated and proud to be Americans.

The United States ranks as one of the most desirable countries to immigrate to because of the better living conditions provided. The country has an active economy with a wide array of work opportunities for everyone. Wages are higher than most countries, with a relatively low cost of living.

In closing, I want to say I’m proud of you all. Keep the faith and nurture the dream, until you taste the success, then share your dream by teaching others.

God Bless You All!

While success with the arc welding process often depends on the skills of the welder, high quality resistance welding results from the welding machine set-up technician understanding and choosing the proper combination of process variables. Take The Mystery Out Of Resistance Welding

By Tom Snow When properly applied, the resistance welding process is the fastest, least expensive and strongest method of joining steel and aluminum sheet metal and attaching nuts and studs.

Commonly called spot, seam and projection welding, the process is often ignored in favor of other methods because it is not widely understood outside of the automotive industry.

Thankfully, many modern resistance welding controls now incorporate features to monitor the process, provide feedback and ensure quality.

The advantage of sourcing directly with WOMO Designs is twofold: Speed and price. There is a plethora of machining prototyping services available, many of which are brokers. You send them your files, they post your file to their job board, and a covey of small machine shops bid best price and delivery in hopes of a win. The broker then adds anywhere from 25% to 60% commission to the price submitted and fires off their quote. You have just spent 24 to 48 precious hours waiting to make your decision. So now the question is why not go directly to WOMO first?

Goldilocks would probably understand resistance welding because the force needs to be “just right” in order to get the proper weld heat at the joint. Since weld heat is generated by the resistance of the material being welded to the flow of welding current, force that’s too low will result in expulsion and force that’s too high will result in low resistance at the joint and weak weld strength. Although a relatively wide range of machine settings can successfully weld mild steel alloys, it’s a different story when welding aluminum, especially to aerospace specifications. This is because aluminum has a very narrow plastic range. Therefore, even more care must be given to finding the ideal combination of Assettings.mentioned earlier, sophisticated new resistance welding controls have made achieving optimum weld quality much easier. In addition, welders with modern three phase Mid Frequency Direct Current (MFDC) inverter technology are now replacing many Sciaky brand frequency converter spot and seam welders. However, since the heavy duty mechanics and diaphragm-type air cylinders of a Sciaky brand resistance welder are hard to match, it’s becoming common to retrofit MFDC technology while doing a complete rebuild of a Sciaky machine.

The company aims to be the preferred supplier of aviation engines to OEMs. A few of the companies Enjet services are Boeing, GE Aviation, Honeywell, Rolls-Royce and a slew of other businesses.

Enjet Aero manufactures complicated machined and fabricated parts and assemblies for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of commercial and military aviation engines.

Enjet Aero, an Overland Park-based aerospace company, acquired Integral Industries Inc. for an undisclosed amount earlier this month.

The acquisition will increase Enjet Aero’s manufacturing presence to nine locations throughout North America, increasing capacity and strengthening Enjet’s position on premier engine platforms.

Adding Integral Industries to the mix, which follows a similar manufacturing methodology, will continue to support Enjet Aero’s goal of being a world-class aero engine component-maker. Integral Industries is based in Newington, Connecticut.

The Kansas City area is home to a sleeping giant in the aerospace industry.

Integral Industries President Ed Mascolo said it made sense to sell to a bigger corporation.

“Over the past few years, it became clear to me that at some point, Integral Industries would need to partner with a larger organization,” Mascolo said in a release. “As I evaluated our options for the right partner to continue Integral’s legacy of high performance for our customers and focus on our employees, I decided on Enjet.”

“Most of the time, the rentals out there aren’t great at uptime, so you rent a diesel truck and it’s down a lot,” Neutgens said. “The difference is our trucks are a much more reliable rental vehicle. When you have 99% uptime, then things tend to go pretty well. We’re able to keep those up and Neutgensrunning.”sees those rentals as an inroad for future sales. Maybe a customer has never considered buying an electric truck but might be willing to rent “Theyone.might rent one for a year and see what happens, then that can turn into sales,” Neutgens said. “We hope it can really be a great path to new customers.”

Founded in 2012, Riverside-based Orange EV was the first U.S.-based manufacturer to sell 100% electric yard trucks, and now it’s the first to launch a nationwide rental program for the vehicles.

Orange EV produces electric terminal trucks, also known as yard trucks or mules, which are small semi-tractors that move trailers around a cargo yard. The company started out retrofitting older diesel trucks and electrifying them. Now, it focuses primarily on new trucks built from scratch. The company has more than 450 electric yard trucks in service, including more than 40 in its growing yard truck rental fleet. Orange EV has been offering rental services on a trial basis for awhile and found customers liked it, so the company decided to expand the program and offer it nationwide.

Orange EV Sees New Nationwide E-Truck Rental Program As An Inroad To More Sales

An Orange EV yard truck is ready to roll off the production line at the company’s facility in the Horizons Industrial Park in Riverside, Missouri.

“There’s a big market in this industry that just does rentals and now we can offer that too,” said Kurt Neutgens, president and co-founder of Orange EV. “There are different reasons for rentals. It can be seasonal work or it can be someone who has a new location and is going to ramp up quickly. They tend to rent awhile before they buy.”

Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh explained the WANTO grant program’s importance at an event today at the Chicago Women in Trades center.

“As part of our effort to build an economy that works for everyone, the department has applied a worker-centered approach to address barriers for women entering apprenticeship programs and non-traditional occupations,” said Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a funding opportunity of $3.4 million for up to nine grants to attract and keep women in Registered Apprenticeship Programs and industries where they are underrepresented such as manufacturing, infrastructure, cybersecurity and healthcare.

“The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations grants will increase workforce pathways for women entering the building trades at a crucial time, as the Biden-Harris administration is heavily investing in infrastructure to create jobs in the clean energy, technology, and manufacturing sectors,” Walsh added.

Administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration and Women’s Bureau, the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations grant program supports community-based organizations in their efforts to recruit, train and retain more women in Registered Apprenticeships and nontraditional occupations.

Women serve in all branches of the U.S. military and make up about 16% of America’s armed forces. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, about 14% of all the men in America are veterans, but only 1.5% of women are. That can make it harder for women veterans to connect with one another.

In Grants To Expand Job Opportunities

A portion of the grants will provide support services such as childcare, transportation, tuition, and work-related gear.

While women make up nearly half the U.S. labor force, they comprise only 13 percent of Registered Apprentices. These grants are intended to help address the significant underrepresentation of women in Registered Apprenticeship programs

For Women

Registered Apprenticeships are a pathway for workers to the middle class. They also help employers to recruit, develop, and retain a highly skilled and diverse workforce. While this earn-while-you-learn model has a long history in skilled trades, such as construction, emerging and high-growth industries like manufacturing, infrastructure, cybersecurity and healthcare are increasingly using Registered Apprenticeships to strengthen their workforce.

FACT Women who are mentored are more likely to pay it forward than men, making woman–woman mentorships a great multiplier. In fact, 65% of mentored women are now developing others at work, and 73% of women who are developing new talent at work are assisting women.

ASKING MEN TO LEAN IN AS SPONSORS

Woman–woman mentoring relationships can help address the challenges women face in their personal and professional roles. Mentors give women an avenue to practice their communication skills in a safe environment by focusing on growth and improvement. Mentors help build social capital for women, particularly in male-dominated settings. Mentors also help develop a leadership pipeline and successors. Mentors help new hires acclimate to company culture more quickly.

Mentors provide guidance and support, whether around a specific need or ongoing development. They listen to their mentees’ experiences and give constructive, direct and honest feedback. Mentors play a critical part in both professional and personal development. Still, traditional mentoring relationships have not been available or understanding of women’s needs. In general, women must balance personal and professional responsibilities to a greater extent than men and consequently deal with higher levels of isolation, imposter syndrome and unconscious biases.

“That’s why we say when we do well, you do well.” He said the company’s contract offer positions U.S. Steel and its employees best for success in the future. The union, however, is focused on what it calls a level playing field between companies.

Melnkovic said that U.S. Steel unionized employees are among the best-paid in the industry. The average U.S. Steel employee represented by USW earned more than $133,000 in wages, overtime and profit

retaining its profit-sharing program, which could have earned each employee up to $41,000 last year as the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker achieved record earnings, $4.1 billion for the full-year 2021. The 2018 contract, which was ratified in November 2018 for 16,000 USW members at 14 U.S. Steel facilities, was for a 14% wage increase over the life of the contract that followed a three-year agreement beginning in 2015 with a wage freeze that had been in a low time for the steel

US Steel Talks About The Latest In Contract Negotiations

U.S. Steel has set out its side on a website with details of the July 26 proposal for the collective bargaining agreement. United Steelworkers has their own regular updates on its website.

“We are really talking to the USW bargaining unit ... about our strong belief in rewarding performance,” Melnkovic said of the employees.

By Paul J. Gough – Reporter, Pittsburgh Business Times

While the contract is about to expire, both sides are committed to talking and negotiations for U.S. Steel and another metals manufacturer, Cleveland Cliffs, are happening in Pittsburgh. United Steelworkers said that they are working toward the issues with U.S. Steel and Cleveland Cliffs, and the Cleveland Cliffs negotiations are being watched closely by the union negotiators talking to U.S. Steel.

“It remains under discussion,” Melnkovic said of the pension issue. He noted that U.S. Steel has something others in the industry do not have: a fully-funded pension plan.

Melnkovic said that built into the contract is a lesser-known provision, a formula that takes into account inflation and can provide a payment to protect base wages if inflation gets high enough. That hasn’t kicked in so far in this contract.

“We’re fighting for stability with real wage increases that build over time and help keep pace with rising costs,” the union said in its update. United Steelworkers declined a request for an interview, saying Thursday’s update provided the latest information.

Pensions also remain a topic of contention: United Steelworkers said it had proposed modest increases to keep up with inflation but the company doesn’t want to do that.

Negotiations between U.S. Steel and United Steelworkers began in June and Melnkovic said that the first negotiations, on the local bargaining unit side, were among the smoothest in a long time.

U.S. Steel’s health insurance proposal would leave premiums unchanged; the union has countered that to do that, it would restrict the number of providers in-network and for some areas cut the number of in-network hospitals in half. Melnkovic said that the company was looking at ways to be able to streamline the health care costs without increasing the premium; U.S. Steel said that its health care benefits are 40% higher than other Fortune 100 companies and in the metals industry.

Another issue is over the company’s capital investment plans: U.S. Steel has said that it would invest $1 billion over the next four years on capital projects. It had committed to $2.5 billion four years ago. Melnkovic said that it has invested more than that, about $5.3 billion, in the union facilities over the last five years. He pushed back against the union’s contention that the company was turning its back on the union operations.

A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST • 15 • AUG - SEPT ‘22 sharing last year; average profit sharing was $24,000 per employee so far this year. The profit sharing is a key and more than 35-year-old component of the union-company arrangement, and Melnkovic said variable pay was a key part of U.S. Steel’s philosophy. But in an update posted Thursday, USW’s bargaining unit said it was unsatisfied with what U.S. Steel was offering. The union said that bonuses are one-time payments.

SCT, Scientific Cutting Tools, A Cut Above The Rest

Jonathan, Dale’s son, will take over engineering and manufacturing management when his father Dale decides to move on. Dale said, “Jonathan has already surpassed me with his capabilities and is basically the GM Jonathanalready.” said, “We are a tight knit family business. In an era where big holding companies are buying up companies our size, we feel we are approachable and that when customers call they will get a real person. We maintain a family culture with our employees, we have very little turn over, and we are told SCT is a great place to work. The average tenure here is 20 years plus with some of our longtime employees at over 40 years.”

Martyn Bramhall of Bramac Machinery invited Dale and Jonathan to an open house to look at some great new linear-motor machines verses the ball screw machines they were currently using. The SCT team was taken by the fast, precise linear motor CNC grinding machines made by ANCA.

Martyn Bramhall with Bramac Machinery, Dale and Jonathan, Jerry Perkins with ANCA Brandon Kaye and Jonathan Christopher

Located in the heart of Southern California, in Simi Valley, SCT has a long history of over 59 years, 3 generations of cutting tool expertise, with the commitment of helping all customers to be successful! The ‘family/team’ at SCT creates solutions for thread mills, single point tools, indexable tools, port tools, and specialty tools, from the highest grade carbide, made on the most precise automated machines, with the finest finishes, all performed in their 50,000+ sq. ft. facility. In 1963, Stanley Christopher started SCT in a garage shop. He had some great ideas on making better, higher quality tools that his previous employer did not want to pursue. So Stanley struck out on his own to make his dream come true.

When you’re looking for a solution in precision cutting tools for your precision lathe and milling machines, look no further than SCT, Scientific Cutting Tools! SCT’s American made tools can be purchased off the shelf from their vast inventory or for those special designs their engineering team can create a wealth of solutions.

A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST • 20 • AUG - SEPT ‘22

Jonathan continues, “There’s a loyalty from our employees with low turnover, but there is also a loyalty to our employees as well. In a downturn we try our best to not lay off our employees. We may have to cut hours, but our goal is to not let anyone go.”

SCT is a private family business. Dale Christopher and his sister, Jan Kaye, took over the business about 25 years ago when their father Stan made the decision to retire at 65. Jan runs the office and customer service end of the business with the help of her son Brandon who is slated to take over her position when she retires.

SCT came to realize back many years ago the importance of automation and started utilizing robots, first with pick and place operations and eventually graduating to more sophisticated multi-axis robotics functioning at a much higher level, affording SCT repeatable high precision tools at a faster rate of production. Cutting tools are made with very high precision CNC 5-axis grinding machines and SCT has utilized some of the best in class machines to grow their business. As they came up with better ways and new ideas to make their tools, their machines needed to keep up with SCT tool’s engineering knowledge.

SCT strives to focus on standardization; moving to one control in their shop with standardization of one machine tool builder, continue with designing new tools depending on where the industry is going and help make their customers successful. SCT continues to grow their company with improved automation and newer state of the art technology and grow their company through continuous improvement.

SCT’s business philosophy is they want to be efficient enough at making and selling their tools so that the business is profitable, while giving good value to the customers so they make money at making their product, thus establishing a win-win relationship. Along with this win-win mantra is solid advice to customers that comes from SCT’s family run business. If the customer needs a tool to run a smaller quantity, they will not advise you to buy something more expensive than needed and thus save you money on a small run.

Jonathan says, “I think when you get into some complex tool types like thread milling, we have some unique engineering. We know the limitations and capabilities of thread milling and we know how to make things work in challenging situations, like when you look at double start threads or complex medical threads. We design and make them so they do not deform and gauge correctly after you cut it.”

Dale says, “One of the reasons we purchase ANCA machines is that in the past we had too many controls. Having four different types of controls can open us up to mistakes or errors and in our precision manufacturing business we have to eliminate every possible avenue for errors. Our goal is to have one control, so when we pass on the work to the next generation it is simpler. One of the things we see as the greatest challenge going forward is training new competent people to run the machines. So, when we simplify our processes we have found we have less problems.”

Dale says, “If a company doesn’t continually improve, it dies. We want to pass this on to the next generation, so controlled growth is very important because it reflects the health of the company.”

What does SCT do better than their competition?

The inspection process starts at the machine tool with every employee trained to inspect and correct the tools in the setup and grinding processes. Tools are then inspected again in the quality control department for dimensional accuracy and every tool is checked for chips and/or cracks in the carbide. This is done using video camera systems, optical comparators and microscopes. This rigorous process ensures that their customers will get the same high quality, geometrically perfect tool every Scientifictime.Cutting Tools, Inc. was established as an innovative tool business based upon the simple marketing concept of providing customers with superior products, competitive prices and uncompromising service.

Jonathan says, “the ANCA machines were faster, producing better finishes, at a price we felt was right. We became very impressed with the customer service ANCA provided with down time kept to a minimum and quick response times with local service techs. We also found value in ANCA’s server system that allows us to maintain control of our grinding processes across multiple machines. ANCA was also willing to write custom software for our applications.”

Mohamed Ali, v-p and general manager of engineering for GE Aerospace, noted the test managed to overcome a key barrier for use of hybridelectric in regional and single-aisle aircraft—flight above 10,000 feet with higher voltages. At higher altitudes, plasma arcing becomes an issue when involving high-voltage systems, due to the thinner air causing reduced resistance. “You need to invent technology to prevent that,” he said, as well as handle thermal management.

GE Tests Megawatt-Class Hybrid System At High Altitude by Kerry Lynch

NASA’s Electric Aircraft Testbed (NEAT) facility in Sandusky, Ohio has been used to simulate altitude conditions to test a megawatt-class, multikilovolt hybrid-electric propulsion system for single-aisle commercial flight under a partnership with GE Aerospace. The successful testing marks a first, paving the way for work towards flight on a Saab 340 testbed involving partner Beoing aircraft.

The components were tested independently and as an integrated system with evaluations covering multiple modes, including power transfer from side to side, power assist to a simulated engine, and aircraft power generation. The trials also involve simulation of energy storage.

Ali called the effort a building block toward hybrid-electric and said it is one of many ahead in the journey toward hybrid in commercial flight.

Testing will continue under NASA’s Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration program with a flight test later in the decade of a hybridelectric system involving CT7-turboprop-powered Saab 340 aircraft.

emergent technologies director for decarbonization at GE Gas Power, says the technology that could result from ARPA-E’s funding has the potential to be transformative for high-hydrogen and post-combustion carbon-capture applications. “Our goal of increasing gas turbine combined-cycle plant efficiency by 5 or more percentage points in the next decade will position GE’s technology to help lead the energy transition,” he says.

Taken together, these two ARPA-E-funded projects offer the potential to improve the efficiency and hydrogen capabilities of GE’s gas turbines while reducing the energy needed to make these products.

The second project involves the casting of furnaces and metal components for industrial gas turbines. GE’s team, working in cooperation with DDM Systems, a precision casting company, envisions a “Digital Foundry” that will employ 3D-printed ceramic mold technologies that would dramatically modernize a casting method called investment casting. The idea is to make castings as much as ten times faster, with 90% less energy than traditional methods, at half the cost.

ByWill Palmer Utilities around the world have been using turbines fueled by natural gas to generate electricity for decades. Power companies have long been drawn to their greater efficiency over earlier forms of electric generation, and their ability to power homes with fewer carbon emissions. But that doesn’t mean gas turbines aren’t evolving. Just take a look at GE’s most advanced gas turbines — the 7HA and the 9HA. Since 2014, when the first combined-cycle power plants began using GE’s HA technology, their efficiency — the measure of how well they convert fuel to power — has surpassed 60% for the first time. (A combined-cycle power plant harvests the waste heat from the gas turbine to boil water and power an attached steam turbine for more efficiency.)

Now GE and the U.S. Department of Energy are working to find new ways to push efficiency higher. This week, DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) awarded $4.2 million to GE Gas Power for research that aims to lower carbon emissions from gas turbines. This funding comes specifically from the ARPA-E OPEN 2021 program, which prioritizes the advancement of transformational technologies supporting a more decarbonized energy system. If successful, the ARPA-E-funded research may be able to contribute to bringing efficiency improvements to the 65% range and beyond while reducing the energy required to make the turbines. The technologies also will be able to enable use of hydrogen, a carbon-free fuel. The funding will go toward two exciting projects. The first will investigate a novel “lifted-flame” combustion approach for advanced gas turbines powered by natural gas and hydrogen. In a lifted-flame system, the flame in the combustor is not attached to the injector. This method can reduce emissions but presents other challenges that this research hopes to Preliminaryovercome.testing of the combustion technology will be conducted in Atlanta at the Georgia Institute of Technology, a leading research university in engineering and gas turbine combustion. The rest of the work will take place at GE’s Gas Turbine Technology Center in Greenville, South Carolina. The research could also help increase the use of hydrogen fuel in gas turbines, which emits no carbon during combustion. GE has been a

leader in hydrogen projects and R&D, carrying out projects with utility companies in Ohio and two sites in New York state, as well as others overseas, to introduce small percentages of hydrogen — so far about 5% or 10% — into their fuel mixes. Green hydrogen, which uses renewable electricity to split water molecules and produce oxygen and hydrogen, is of particular interest, because it presents the possibility of power generation with zero carbon emissions during fuel production or Jeffreycombustion.Goldmeer,

The Hydrogen Shot and University Research Consortium Grid Resilience FOA will also provide three-year funding for a regionally diverse university consortium focused on developing a decarbonized and more resilient electrical power system in coordination with universities in Mexico and Canada. This North American consortium will be critical to addressing cross-border grid dependencies and electrical interconnections throughout Theregion.application process for both the clean hydrogen FOA and University Consortium funding will include two phases: a concept paper and a full application. Concept papers are due on September 23, 2022, and full applications are due on December 1, 2022.

The Reshoring Initiative, founded in early 2010, helps manufacturers realize that local production, in some cases, reduces their total cost of ownership of purchased parts and tooling. The Initiative also trains suppliers how to sell against lower-priced offshore competitors.

PMA, an inaugural sponsor of the National Reshoring Award, is the full-service trade association representing the North American metalforming industry — the industry that creates precision metal products using stamping, fabricating, spinning, slide forming and roll forming technologies, and other value-added processes. Its nearly 900 member companies also include suppliers of equipment, materials and services to the industry.

NTMA is the voice for the precision manufacturing and tool and die industries in the United States. Backed by nearly 1,300 member companies, representing more than $30 billion in sales, NTMA provides an array of benefits to members and the industry including advocacy in Washington, training and education programs and networking events nationwide.

DOE Announces $60 Million to Advance Clean Hydrogen Technologies and Decarbonize Grid

The Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT) represents U.S. builders and distributors of manufacturing technology – the advanced machinery, devices and digital equipment that U.S. manufacturing relies on to be productive, innovative, and competitive.

“DOE is laser focused on building a future with cleaner manufacturing, transportation, and electricity — all of which can be achieved with clean hydrogen technology,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “These investments will advance cutting-edge technologies and empower state, territory, and tribal leaders to make the best, informed decisions about improving and decarbonizing the electric power grid.” This funding opportunity will advance DOE’s Hydrogen Shot goal of reducing the cost of clean hydrogen to 1 dollar per 1 kilogram in 1 decade (“1 1 1”), while supporting DOE’s H2@Scale initiative, which aims to advance the affordable production, transport, storage, and utilization of clean hydrogen to enable decarbonization and revenue opportunities across multiple sectors. Topic areas include projects that will develop technologies for solar fuels created by harvesting sunlight, improve hydrogen-emissions detection and monitoring, demonstrate higher-density and lower-pressure hydrogen storage technologies, and lower the costs and enhance the durability of hydrogen fuel cells for medium- and heavy-duty transportation applications.

DOE envisions multiple financial assistance awards in the form of cooperative agreements, with the period of performance being approximately two to four years. DOE encourages applicant teams that include stakeholders within academia, industry, and national laboratories across multiple technical disciplines.Teams are also encouraged to include representation from diverse entities such as minority-serving institutions or through linkages with Opportunity Zones.

He believes that demand was spurred by a number of factors, not the least of which was the need to keep production lines running when the availability of workers was drastically reduced.

As for future growth, ABI Research predicts that by 2026, worldwide cobot shipments are expected to pass 47,000 annually.

According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), 22,000 cobots were installed in 2020, twice as many as were deployed in 2017.

TE Connectivity (TE), one of the world’s largest sensors providers, has a pulse on the use of cobots in factory automation and is focused on key trends shaping the future such as increased flexibility, lower total cost of ownership, enhanced safety, and durability.

The Growing Role of Cobots in Factory Automation 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the first industrial robot. While robots have been a fixture of the industrial landscape for decades, in recent years, the advancement of automated technology has helped drive the development of cobots.

“There was a need for automation to fill the gap left by the large number of people who were not available to come into the factory,” says Garcia. “And since there was no telling when the pandemic would ease, many companies quickly adopted cobot technology to keep their production lines running.”

He states, “While cobots are relatively new, with the first commercial cobots only hitting the market in 2008, their sales saw a significant uptick when the global pandemic struck. Beginning in late 2019 and early 2020, demand for cobots began to soar.”

Cobots are smaller, cheaper, and easier to program traditionalthanindustrialrobots, whilealsoprovidingincreasedflexibility. They can be quickly reassigned to perform new tasks as needed or easily moved to a different area of a factory or warehouse. Most importantly, Cobots are also designed to operate safely alongside people, making them well suited for dangerous, unpleasant or repetitive tasks, or to assist human operators in tasks that require extreme precision.

Last issue covered ingredients that make an appealing work environment. Now how do we convert your sought-after atmosphere into an attraction for new talent in an especially tight labor market? You may be hearing from the mainstream media how businesses are thriving, and unemployment is down. The fact is we are amid a recession. This makes for a confusing narrative. Tech companies are having massive layoffs. The dichotomy is manufacturers across the spectrum have robust backlogs even while juggling material supply issues. The bigger concern is finding a reliable and stable workforce. If you are in manufacturing, these unique conditions make the case for having an environment that attracts much needed talent.

Cassie’s next statement describes an attitude that spreads through the workforce. “My job gives me the opportunity to have a positive impact on people’s lives and make a difference. There is always a sense that we are working toward an achievable vision. I proudly see us making strides toward that goal every day. I love the people I work with! They are a talented, fun, dedicated staff. Ultimately, when I love my job, I perform better.” And so do others! Nothing I could add will make a better case for confirmation of the power of positivity in the workplace. Showcase your environment to your candidates. One point Cassie made early on was she originally came to 3D because she had friends that worked there. There are no better recruiters than your employees! Manufacturing is a tough but rewarding business – the one that fuels and fosters a stable economy. When looking for new talent, instead of posting a line in the help wanted listings, invest in a creative ad that realistically describes why your business will be the best choice. Draw candidates in with the advantage of working in your supportive atmosphere. Then leave the rest to your HR folks. Small shops may not have the luxury of an HR department. If so, thoroughly vet the prospect for the position. If a candidate is not fully qualified, establish that they are eager to learn and be trained. Manufacturing is hard work – but it is also rewarding for employees who are given articulate instruction and supportive guidance, the tools necessary for their success. Make an attractive but truthful statement of their responsibilities. The most desirable attribute in retaining good talent is a congenial, positive work environment. Again, this happens from the top down, and also percolates from the bottom up!
