A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time. ____________________________________ When business is good, it pays to advertise; when business is bad, you’ve got to advertise. By Henry Ford
Some advertising out there can be very costly (not ours) and many small independent businesses just can’t afford much advertising (that’s why a business card ad is good). It’s like car insurance: you can’t afford it, but you can’t afford not to have it! After reading Henry’s quotes I thought I would give you some information on what we do for you. We offer 3 regional magazines focused on your business development. That means getting business to you, helping you find ways to get people to call or email you with a quote and eventually some work. We promote business development through full color magazines for 3 individual regions, the Rocky Mountain Edition (CO, UT, ID, MT, WY), the Southwest Edition (AZ, NV, NM), and the West Coast Edition (CA, OR, WA). Our magazines are read by fortune 1000 decision makers in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Production, and by Presidents and CEO’s of companies. Manufacturing companies large and small read our magazine and use the digital version as a quick reference to obtain stronger supply chain partners. The buyers guide in the back of every regional magazine stays on the decision makers’ desks and we are told they are utilized. The stories and articles are relevant news of the region and they tell the story of who is spending money or growing in business and may need your products and services. The ads do not fill up every page so that almost every page has a story or some quality information about what’s happening in U.S. manufacturing. We work hard to help the cycle of life for manufacturing by attending every regional manufacturing trade show available and we (Linda and I) do all the interviews and write the articles, make many of the ads, and do everything but print the magazine (our printer does that very well). Advertising with us is very affordable. If you could buy a truck for what something like it was going for 12 years ago and it had 10 times more features on it, would that be a great deal?Yes, that would be a smoking deal and that’s what we provide our advertisers. Our rates have not changed in over 12 years and we offer many more bells and whistles than we did back then. We also offer all 3 regional editions in digital format on our website at no charge and the email addresses and website addresses are hot-linked so the reader can connect with an advertiser right away. We are Linkedin, we have a Business Facebook page, and we do blogs of articles we write on manufacturing companies all in a combined effort to drive customers to your business. In closing, 2014 is shaping up to be a great year. Make the best of it and know you are blessed to live in the USA! We would like to ask for your thoughts on how we can improve the magazine or just tell us what you like so we keep doing it or writing about it. Please email me your ideas to: Kim@a2zMetalworker.com. Thank you all!

Sweden Home to Latest Haas Milestone – 150,000th Haas Machine Haas Automation, Inc., is pleased to announce another major milestone in the company’s history as one of the world’s leading machine tool builders – the production and installation of the 150,000th Haas CNC machine.
Buyken purchased the 4000 watt laser with twin towers (over 80,000 lbs of storage) for speed accuracy and capacity. Buyken can program off line, the machine continues to run; Buyken can load the tower, the machine continues to run; Buyken can unload parts, the machine continues to run; Buyken has common raw stock material inventoried in the towers for immediate response, and the 4000 watt laser has a very quick pierce time – all critical in improving productivity.
It was a mere 7 years ago that Haas Automation celebrated the installation of its 75,000th CNC machine – a VF-3SS purchased by a family-owned machining business in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. The 150,000th machine – a DS-30SSY dual-spindle turning center with Y axis – rolled off the Haas production line January 19, 2014, and was installed at Swedish company Claesson Engineering in March, following a special handing-over ceremony at the Manufacturing & Automation Expo (MAX) in Stockholm, Sweden.
Call (253) 852-0634 or visit www.buyken.com to learn how Buyken can help you with your metal manufacturing needs.
Metalcraft Industries Reduces Cycle Time with Robotic Welding Cell Metalcraft Industries Inc. recently took delivery of a Miller Welding Cell fitted with a Panasonic Robot for continuous MIG welding operations upon being awarded a project in the energy field. Company President Darrin Caschette stated, “The sheer volume of work we received plus the linear inches of weld gave us no choice; we wouldn’t have been able to hire fast enough.” The roughly 38 x 28 x 28 hydraulic tanks require redundant welding inside and out to ensure against pin holes as well as pressure testing each tank. Mr. Caschette noted that the robot can weld 5-10 times faster than manual welding depending on the application and the quality of the weld is unsurpassed.
“Installation of the 150,000th machine is a very special occasion for Haas Automation,” said Alain Reynvoet, Managing Director, Haas Automation Europe. “The fact that it has been bought by a European company – in the relatively high-cost region of Scandinavia – is further proof that the Haas combination of value, performance, reliability, and support is the right one for any market.” The DS-30SSY combines dual-spindle turning with Y axis, C axis, and live tooling to create a powerful “done-in-one” machining solution. The opposed spindles support fully synchronized turning and allow on-the-fly part pass-off to reduce cycle times. The machine provides 4” ofY-axis travel (±2” from the centerline) for off-center milling, drilling, and tapping, and comes standard with high-torque live tooling and a servo-driven C axis for versatile 4-axis capability. “It’s a great honour for us to be part of these celebrations,” said Edströms company owner and CEO, Ola Andersson. “Claesson Engineering is a valued customer, and has already invested in several Haas machine tools over the years, since it was founded in 2000. This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the achievements of all those involved, but the important thing is that the Haas machine will give the customer many years of profitable, reliable service.”

Inland Northwest Metallurgical Services (INMS) in Spokane,WA is pleased to announce the commissioning of its fifth vacuum furnace. The HR-34X40 (2Bar) has a brand new all-moly hot zone and is dedicated to bright hardening superalloys such as Inconel 718. Other heat treaters possess vacuum furnaces and can bright harden alloys such as stainless steels and tool steels, but very few in the country can solution treat and age Inconel 718 and have it be bright at the end of the long process. It not only requires an allmetal hot zone, but it also requires extreme discipline of what is placed in the furnace. All parts that are processed in this furnace are free from any soil, oils and anything else that may contaminate the furnace. All parts and fixtures are handled with latex gloves. The furnace meets the stringent aerospace re q u i re m e n t s o f AMS2750. INMS has been in business for 18 years servicing the heat www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

California Firm Awarded Patent for ZeroFuel Solar Plastic Molding Technology LightManufacturing, a solar thermal technology company, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued the firm US Patent 8,662,877 covering the use of concentrated solar thermal energy for molding plastic. The proprietary technology allows low-cost manufacturing of large plastic objects like water tanks and boats without the use of fossil fuels. The patent describes the use of heliostats (sun-tracking mirrors) to concentrate heat in a plastic molding system. “Our technology eliminates the energy costs of roto-molding or vacuum-forming plastic parts”, says Karl von Kries, LightManufacturing Founder and CEO, “while offering opportunities to simplify and reduce the cost of the molding system”. The company’s Solar Rotational Molding (SRM®) systems are delivered pre-integrated into 20’ ISO shipping containers, and can be dropped onto unimproved land. No building, concrete pad, or grid energy connection is required. “This ease of installation means customers can put inexpensive production capacity in new markets, or put manufacturing close to customers to reduce transport costs”, says von Kries. Heat for melting the plastic comes from an array of the company’s “H1” heliostats, and a photovoltaic array on the roof of the container provides energy to rotate the molds and operate other equipment. The company estimates that the now-patented processes can be deployed on over 49% of the Earth’s land area.

While many solar technology firms work on methods for generating electricity, LightManufacturing differs by concentrating solely on applying solar heat to manufacturing processes. “Enormous opportunities exist to harness solar thermal energy for industrial applications”, says von Kries. “Many processes that burn natural gas or other fossil fuels to generate heat is a candidate for conversion to solar thermal, and the plastic molding processes covered by this patent happen to be two of the best first applications of our technology”. The firm describes the process in detail with photos and video at http://www.lightmanufacturingsystems.com

Pentagon officials have said they would step in and support smaller firms deemed critical to the wider defense-industry supply chain. Frank Kendall, undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, said in a recent interview that the Pentagon is developing a shortlist of companies that may need assistance, in partnership with larger contractors Suggested remedies include the Pentagon buying ahead to boost small companies’ cash positions. But the engine commitment indicates the Pentagon may use larger contractors as the vehicle to spread indirect support.

budget plan’s unveiling. “There are certain areas where we make strategic decisions for investments, and that’s just one.” GE and Pratt are working on the Pentagon’s Adaptive Engine Technology Development program, which aims to mold the advances made in boosting fuel efficiency for commercial aircraft to the different demands of the military. The basic differences are that fighters can fly faster than commercial jets, and they change their speed and altitude more often when in combat, said Jimmy Kenyon, general manager of next-generation
fighter programs at United Technologies’ Pratt & Whitney. The “adaptive” technology adjusts the amount of air flowing through the engines to maximize fuel efficiency at different speeds and altitudes, helping to reduce the Pentagon’s annual $20 billion fuel bill. If funded by Congress, the engine plan would also continue one of the fiercest rivalries in the defense sector. Pratt & Whitney supplies engines for the first F-35 Joint Strike Fighters produced by Lockheed Martin Corp., while GE and RollsRoyce PLC received Pentagon funding until 2011 to develop an alternative. GE and its U.K. partner paid for further development themselves before dropping the project in late 2011, leaving only the Pratt engine available for a plane that is expected to make up the bulk of the U.S. air fleet, with potential orders for more than 2,400 jets. The Pentagon has yet to indicate whether the planned $1 billion in additional engine research would go to more than one supplier. Further details are expected when it unveils its full fiscal 2015 budget plan. -The Wallstreet Journal

Career And Technical Education In Seattle Revived By Interest In STEM The Seattle Times reported that “national enthusiasm” for STEM education “has breathed new life into” Seattle’s Career and Technical Education program. Recently, Seattle’s program had fallen behind other districts like Tacoma, Auburn and Renton, but in 1996 superintendent John Stanford hired Shepherd Siegel to reform the program. Siegel said of the program: “There were times when it was used as the dumping ground.” Siegel has since revitalized the program, introducing a variety of career tracks to get students interested in science and engineering, as well as providing students with technical certifications sought after by employers. Despite these successes, challenges remain, since students need to be made aware of the opportunities and “parents often must be convinced that they’re not part of a second-class education for kids who aren’t considered college material.”

Austal, Lockheed warships did well in U.S. war game -admiral (Reuters) - Both the Lockheed Martin Corp and Austal versions of the U.S. Navy’s new coastal warship performed well in a major war game last week and surprised some “enemies” with their capabilities, a top Navy admiral said on Tuesday. Rear Admiral Thomas Rowden, director of surface warfare for the Navy, said the war game held at the Navy War College in Rhode Island underscored the effectiveness of the new smaller warships in potential future conflicts, even in deeper waters. “This is going to be a force to be reckoned with,” Rowden told reporters on a teleconference, noting that U.S. Navy officials went home after the weeklong exercises with a new appreciation for the Navy’s newest class of warships. The war game was planned long before Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered the Navy to reassess its plans to buy 52 of the new smaller warships, and launch a study on what it would take to make give the ships better protection and more firepower. A Navy task force is studying options for meeting a requirement for 52 small surface combatants, including buying more of the current LCS ships, modifying them, or switching to a new design, all with a focus on affordability. A separate advisory group, chaired by Rowden and Allison Stiller, deputy assistant secretary of Navy for ships, is also looking at the issue. Rowden said pairing the smaller Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) with larger guided missile destroyers increased their ability to survive enemy attacks and sharply increased the Navy’s ability to hunt for enemy submarines. He said the war game - which involved 32 LCS ships and a broad range of other ships, fighter jets and other U.S. military equipment - showed how changing the concept of operations to pair up ships during a battle could be an affordable alternative to adding air defense equipment to the LCS ships. The ability of the LCS ships to switch equipment and take on new missions, or modularity, proved helpful in some circumstances during the game, Rowden said. Over 800 pages of notes from the war game will be analyzed over the next two months with conclusions likely to be released in mid- to late May, Rowden told reporters.

Global Solar Deployment Exceeds Wind for First Time The global clean-energy picture for 2013 was a classic good news-bad news story, according to the Clean Energy Trends 2014 report issued today by clean-tech research and advisory firm Clean Edge, Inc. The industry saw dazzling growth, success, and rising stock prices in some sectors – most notably solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment – but downward trends and policy and finance hurdles in others. Last year also marked a significant transition in the history of clean energy: for the first time since Clean Edge began tracking global markets in 2000, the world installed more new solar PV generating capacity, 36.5 gigawatts, than wind power (35.5 GW). Record levels of new solar deployment in China, Japan, and the U.S. combined with a down year in the wind industry to create this unprecedented crossover. The global solar market’s continued double-digit growth of 15 percent, plus a modest uptick in biofuels’ market size, was not enough to overcome the wind industry’s lackluster performance. As a result, combined global revenue for solar PV, wind power, and biofuels held nearly steady at $247.6 billion, down just slightly from $248.7 billion in 2012. “The adoption of clean energy is set against a bigger-picture context that finds many of the world’s largest energy-using nations struggling with critical choices for their energy future,” said Ron Pernick, Clean Edge co-founder and managing director. “Climate disruptions, smog alerts, planned and unplanned nuclear power shutdowns, and resource scarcity are all driving significant change, accelerating the double-digit adoption growth of solar PV, hybrid and electric vehicles, green buildings, and other clean-tech solutions.”(eSolarEnergyNews)
Low-Cost Gas Drives Chemical Boom. Bloomberg News reports that Dow Chemical and other US chemical firms will “boost output capacity 30 percent in a decade” due to low-cost shale gas, according to IHS senior director Russell Heinen. Heinen also predicted capital expenditure on US chemical factories www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
“will peak in 2016 at $14 billion, four times current levels.” Dave Witte, senior vice president at IHS, predicted a “fivefold increase in U.S. earnings from ethylene,” due to cheap gas and growing production. Witte advocated increasing gas exports to keep “U.S. chemical markets balanced.”

MacKay Manufacturing Utilizes State of the Art DMG/Mori Seiki Machinery to Continue Building Their World Class Manufacturing Business The origins of MacKay Manufacturing were founded in 1946 in Spokane Valley , Washington as a small machine shop. Mike MacKay became their Sales Manager in 1981. After 5 years in that role, an opportunity to purchase the company came together for Mike and Debra MacKay. In 1986 the company changed its ownership and name to MacKay Manufacturing Inc. Many changes have taken place over the past three decades thanks to Mike’s relentless desire to grow and constantly improve the business. In 1986, MacKay Manufacturing earned $900,000 a year in sales with 17 employees. I asked Mike how he felt after he took over the business, when he was now on his own. Mike replied; “The thing that hit me first though was, wow - I really better start paying attention!” Mike knew at a young age that he was going to be a business owner at some point in his lifetime, never did he imagine it would grow into what it is today. Mike will be the first to tell you that he is not a machinist, he is a salesman. He relied on his employees to do what they do best, and that was make quality products that are delivered on time. Mike did what he did best: selling, and his sales skill lead to growth. MacKay Manufacturing has grown consistently over the years to reach its current level of 135 employees and annual revenue of $20 million. The company is still located in the sunny Spokane Valley, but has moved to a new state-of-the-art 50,000 sq. ft. facility, with a temperature-controlled environment to ensure that all of their equipment, material and instrumentation remain thermally constant. Much of the company’s success can be attributed to its skilled employees, growing into a team of professionals by leveraging their talent, thirst for knowledge, and ability to work closely together. Having this team of talent has allowed them to keep pace with the constantly changing demands of their customers, and the improvements in machine tool technology. Their first CNC machine - purchased in 1982 - was a Mori Seiki model SL3 CNC lathe. This technology proved to be a game changer in the business, providing a significant increase in productivity and the ability to deliver goods to customers in less time.

In the early days the company was very much a common job shop; somewhat dirty, chips and coolant everywhere and no focus on specific types of work or industries. The company was machining parts for local customers coming in off the street. But with the introduction of CNC machine tools, their world change quickly. Mike had a knack for rapidly and accurately quoting projects by having a feel for what the market needed most. He also saw the opportunity to go after the more difficult projects that other machine shops simply would not quote, and by doing so, it began to give MacKay Manufacturing an edge in the machining market. As the customers started to grow, so did the company’s need for more CNC machines and the productivity they provide. In 1987 MacKay bought a Mori Seiki model SL0 CNC turning center, a machine which has been running every day since and now has over 60,000 hours on it. “We are just now replacing the original spindle in this machine, after all these years”, quotes Mike MacKay. When Mike was asked why he chose to buy Mori Seiki machines, he replied; “We bought the Mori’s because we’ve always had really good luck with them, they run well, are very accurate, and they just keep running. We also like the people who sell them. Over the years MacKay Manufacturing has been purchasing its Mori Seiki machine tools from Ellison Technologies. A culture of continuous training and employee education is another key to MacKay’s’ success. With technology changing as fast as it does and software developing new capabilities continually, MacKay must stay on top with as much education as possible to maintain its edge in the industry. The company provides their staff with in-house training programs, and many times a year will send machin-
ists and programmers out to software conferences and trade shows to learn the latest technology. Attending trade shows like IMTS in Chicago is often times where MacKay learns of the newest machine tools that are available on the market. Over the past 30 years, MacKay Manufacturing has transitioned from an all manual machine shop to an all CNC machine shop. Today the shop looks much different, now running over 50 CNC machines, and continually pushing the envelope in every facet of their business. It has embraced the discipline of Lean Manufacturing and therefore has a clean and organized shop in a first rate facility for their employees to work. One of the most productive machines is a technology fairly new to them. Mike Says,“We have a Mori Seiki NTX1000 out there that is a lathe and a mill combined - an integrated turning center. It can process work at blinding speed, and can complete most parts in one single operation. You put material in at one end and it gives you a finished part ready to ship out the other.” This machine has proven so successful in eliminating setups and human error that an additional Mori Seiki NTX1000 will be delivered within the next week. By utilizing this multi-axis integrated technology and taking full advantage of the machine’s advanced capabilities, it has allowed MacKay to stay price competitive and a preferred supplier with its worldwide customer base.

MacKay Manufacturing is very much a family business; Mike and Debra have two children, Katie and Matt, who have grown up in the business and are currently in the transition to leadership. Both children are involved daily with the operation of the company, along with their cousin Chadd MacKay. Matt handles the fabrication and welding on the production floor. Katie is the Vice President, and Chadd is the NPI Manager (New Product Introduction). They have a transition coach to help ensure that Katie and Matt - as the second generation - will have all of the experience and tools available to help with their development. These days MacKay Manufacturing specializes in a variety of product groups, from infrared camera components to silicon wafer industry products, with the main portion of their business in medical instruments and devices. Medical products the company manufactures are used in spine, orthoscopic and endoscopic surgeries. Katie MacKay states; “We have held our ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and AS9100 certifications for many years. Those procedures and certificates have helped us achieve a Quality Management System that is robust enough to support the level of work we pride ourselves on.” In addition to the machinery, MacKay has deployed a class 10K clean room, where parts are cleaned and assembled in a controlled particulate environment. There is also a portion of the clean room that is bio-controlled, for final packaging of surgical implants in a sterile environment. MacKay Manufacturing has evolved into a company that can take a product from prototype, to production, to end user delivery.

GE Extends 787 Engine Market Lead General Electric’s share of the total Boeing 787 announced orderbook has officially broken the 50% barrier with the selection by Air France-KLM of the GEnx-1B engine to power its mixed fleet of 37 owned and leased 787-8s and 9s. The deal maintains GE’s lead in the 787 which it has held over the competing Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine largely due to an early advantage in fuel burn as well as broader leveraging of fleet support deals involving GE90-powered 777-300ERs. The total engine order, which covers 25 787-9s and 12 leased 787s, is valued at more than $1.7 billion says GE, which adds the operator has also signed an agreement that will let Air France-KLM offer maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the GEnx-1B.

According to Boeing figures the latest announcement means that GE has been selected to power 535 of the 1,031 787 aircraft of all versions currently on firm order. Of the remainder 253 are officially logged as Rolls-powered, with the balance of 243 (23.5%) currently marked as unselected. However according to engine maker sources the actual number of firm selections is greater for both companies with airlines having picked the GEnx-1B for 564 787s, and the Trent 1000 for 321. Although Boeing cannot confirm these numbers, if verified they mean that the backlog of undecided 787s to fight over has shrunk to just 146 aircraft, or around 14% of the firm orderbook. The updated numbers also indicate GE’s share of the firm 787 market has climbed to almost 55% with Rolls taking over 31%. www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
Rolls is meanwhile mounting a comeback campaign with the radically revised Trent 1000 TEN which was launched at the 2012 Farnborough airshow. To be rated at 78,000 lb. thrust, the engine is in development for all versions of the 787 including the -10 which received the go-ahead last year. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Qatar also committed to buy a Patriot missile defense system built by Raytheon equipped with PAC-3 missiles made by Lockheed; advanced daytime, high-definition sensors and radars for Apache helicopters; and Javelin missiles built by a Lockheed-Raytheon joint venture, according to sources familiar with the matter. Raytheon had told analysts in January that it expected to finalize an order with Qatar in the first half of 2014 for over $2 billion in Patriot missile defense system equipment.
Washington has been keen to deepen its cooperation with Gulf nations, which have been long-standing allies, on missile defense and increase pressure on Iran over its nuclear program. Automatics & Machinery Co., Inc. (A&M) Supports Their Customers across the U.S. with “The A Team!”
The A&M “A Team”
Machine tools are the heart of every machine shop. When the machines are not the best fit for a shop’s needs, then that shop is leaving money on the table. This holds true for small to large job shops, captive shops and in large manufacturing facilities. Since 1989, companies have relied on A&M’s expertise and assistance to locate and acquire quality used machine tools best suited for their operations. The A&M sales staff helps customers evaluate their machine needs for now and in the future. This may include liquidating certain capital assets to off-set the purchasing of different machinery or a simple buy/sell transaction to add capacity or remove surplus. While used machine tools are frequently the most affordable option, sometimes those shops have needs that require new machine technology, which A&M did not offer, until recently. Over the last several years A&M’s has been searching for the right new machine tool line to offer their customer base. The line needed to span the needs of small to large job shops and production facilities in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain States. It had to include manual tool room machinery through CNC production lathes and mills, from the basic needs through full 5-axis vertical machines. And critically, A&M wanted high quality machine tools at an affordable price. Ganesh Machinery met and exceeded all of these criteria. The new Ganesh Machinery line allows A&M to enter the new machine tool market place offering customers a much broader range of machine tool options and capabilities while A&M’s used machine tool expertise gives the customer the added benefit of A&M’s ability to be aggressive with a trade-in program. Hear Some Feedback From Automatics & Machinery’s Customers: “When I was working in our machine shop, one of our customers had a critical line down. The machine they were making parts on was a custom machine they built. They called me and asked if I could help get them out of a jam. My machine was able to make their parts, but I didn’t have the needed of a particular bar feeder. I called Steve at Automatics. He started calling his contacts and found the specific bar feeder I needed for that job. He had it shipped to us overnight! The bar feeder was a fairly priced (no gouging because of my need), and our end customer was so happy that we got him out of a jam that he paid for the bar feeder. You just don’t see the kind of ‘I can make it happen for you’ attitude that Automatics has!” “The owner of our shop sells his used machine tool equipment on his own. He likes to think he is wheeling and dealing, but he would have gotten more for his used machines if he had contacted Automatics & Machinery. Shop owners don’t have the time or resources to do the extensive research that Automatics does, nor do they know of all of the available buyers. Anyone selling used equipment should first call A&M.” “We were in the market for some new Citizen M machines, but the delivery schedule didn’t meet our requirements. We contacted Automatics & Machinery. They found 4 available in a shop in California. We flew out immediately and bought all 4, complete with tooling & bar loaders. We were up and running with our ‘new’ Citizens in no time! What a great experience” “We’ve been buying and selling machines through Automatics & Machinery for many years now. We have a very good working relationship, and I feel they get me a very fair price, based on age and condition, both for the machines we sell and the used machines we buy through them. They are a trustworthy group of people.”

Locals work on Google Glass Google Glass is not yet available for sale, but applications of the device are being developed in Folsom, midtown Sacramento, Rancho Cordova and even at Sleep Train Arena. Only Google-approved developers and partners are so far permitted to work with the wearable computer, which can record audio and video and display data and images that only the wearer can see. The Sacramento Kings are using Google Glass by having players wear the devices as they enter the arena and during warm-ups. Images gathered from the devices are then streamed live to smartphones and big screens in the arena. Sacramento Business Journal

In flight, 24 of the new batteries will replace 48 existing nickel hydrogen batteries. The new batteries represent about half the launch weight of the battery system it replaces, and the new batteries will store 50 percent more energy. The first module of the International Space Station was launched into orbit in 1998. The station has been added to over the years. It has had astronauts on board continuously since November 2000. “The successful execution of this review verifies that the obital replacement unit meets all design, operational and performance requirements,” Larry Trager, director of Advanced Power Systems at Aerojet, said in a news release. Find Out Where Oregon’s Next 258,000 Jobs Will Come From Oregon’s workforce will grow by 258,000 jobs in the 10-year period between 2012 and 2022, according to new projections released by the Oregon Employment Department. That 15 percent increase will be driven by growth in the private sector, including 47,000 new jobs from within professional and business services. That category is led by computer systems design — including Portland’s hot software cluster — which is forecast to become the state’s fastest-growing job creator, adding 5,000 jobs. That’s a 42 percent growth rate over the decade. Solar Making Huge Gains, 29% of All New Electricity Capacity FORTY-FIVE minutes west of Las Vegas, dejected sinners may encounter a sight to lift their sunken hearts: a sea of 347,000 mirrors, reflecting the rays of the desert sun on to boilers mounted on three 460-foot towers. The Ivanpah solar-thermal plant (pictured), which opened in mid-February, is the largest of its kind in the world. Fully ramped up, it will deliver around 377 megawatts (MW) of power to 140,000 homes in southern California. Its backers compare it to the nearby Hoover Dam; an astronaut claims to have spotted it from the international space station. It is a striking sight, even if the heat from its heliostats has roasted dozens of unfortunate birds alive. Solar power in America is growing rapidly, albeit from a small base (see chart). Last year it represented 29% of new electricity capacity, behind only natural gas at 46%. Solar output has more than doubled during Barack Obama’s time in office; GTM, a research firm, reckons it will grow another 26% in 2014. The Department of Energy wants solar to provide 27% of America’s electricity by 2050, up from less than 1% today. Though dazzling, Ivanpah and large plants like it will not generate much of this growth. The federal loan guarantees that allowed their creation have expired. More important are photovoltaic solar cells, a rival technology that converts sunlight directly to electricity.Their cost has fallen so quickly that in many places retail electricity customers are saving money by placing panels on top of their houses or businesses; 200,000 have done so in the past two years. And there is a lot of room to grow. “There’s no market saturation in any state; not even close,” says Lyndon Rive of SolarCity, a solar-installation firm. Even David Crane, the boss of NRG, co-owner of Ivanpah, says that photovoltaic installations are the future. Last year sun-soaked California accounted for over half of America’s new photovoltaic installations. That, say solar fans, shows that the sector can thrive even after it loses its subsidies. (The $2.2 billion California Solar Initiative, which gave cash to homes or firms that went solar, has largely expired.) Solar is also blossoming in unexpected places like Massachusetts and North Carolina. A bigger test will come in 2017, when the federal government’s solarinvestment tax credit drops from 30% to 10% (unless Mr Obama can convince Congress otherwise). Still, says Shayle Kann at GTM, this will be no “death knell”; it will simply eliminate some marginal projects. And by then there may be a revival of Ivanpah-style solar-thermal plants, as energy-storage technologies improve and utility firms look to them to provide steady power throughout the day. Yet even if solar power is a boon to consumers, it threatens some utilities. Energy has traditionally been generated centrally, distributed over power lines and sold to consumers. Distributed solar power—generated from rooftop panels—undermines that model (see article). The Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade group, warns that distributed generation could do to energy companies what the internet did to newspapers. www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

and provide a boost to business sentiment. Manufacturing production grew about 2.3% in 2013. MAPI forecasts growth of 3.2% in 2014 and 4.0% in 2015. High-tech production (computers and electronic products) increased 4.4% in 2013.We predict growth of 6.8% in 2014 and 7.2% in 2015. Non-high-tech or traditional manufacturing, which accounts for the vast bulk of value-added in the sector, grew about 2.2% in 2013. The forecast is for a 2.9% increase in 2014 and a 3.8% gain in 2015. Housing starts will post large percentage gains this year and in 2015. Rising mortgage rates and higher home prices will not derail the recovery because there is large pent-up demand. Home inventories are tight, including the availability of rental units. The housing rebound particularly helps wood products, nonmetallic mineral products, HVAC, household appliances, furniture, and construction machinery. Motor vehicles and parts production will grow faster than the average for the manufacturing sector this year, but the growth rate will match the manufacturing average in 2015. Oil prices should trend downward but stay high enough to encourage more drilling. Natural gas prices will remain relatively low and drift upward. Mining and drilling equipment production will post modest growth in 2014 and pick up the pace in 2015.
The Manufacturing Outlook For 2014 And 2015 An overarching reason for the anticipated growth rebound is that factors that were dragging down growth (mainly tax and other policy issues) were absorbed in 2013 and will not get worse over the next two years. Consumer-driven manufacturing growth will be relatively stable and supported by employment gains. Households have low debt burdens and their wealth is rising because of higher stock and home prices. Business investment–driven manufacturing is responsible for nearly all the acceleration in production growth. Firms have lots of cash, are profitable, and have relatively high utilization rates. Importantly, the two-year federal budget and debt ceiling agreement substantially reduce uncertainty. Now that the Eurozone has come out of recession and emerging markets seem more resilient, export activity should pick up A2Z METALWORKER NW •

The growth rate in high-tech industries— semiconductors, electronic computer equipment, and communications equipment—is relatively strong because of declining prices and the quality adjustment for processing speed. Medical equipment production will post solid growth thanks to aging trends and the Affordable Care Act. Pharmaceutical production should be flat in 2014 before showing a pickup in growth. The lack of new blockbuster drugs is the major impediment to growth. Aerospace production is starting to ramp up again. The civilian aircraft backlog is large and aircraft production will show strong growth over the next several years. Defense cuts are a headwind. Private nonresidential construction will benefit from more business investment and will grow at a moderate rate in 2014 but really accelerate in 2015.

Honeywell And Cps Energy Expand Efforts To Help Make The Electrical Grid Smarter, More Reliable Honeywell announced a two- year program with CPS Energy in San Antonio, Texas. The utility will use automated demand response (ADR) technology and services from Honeywell to connect and collaborate with commercial and industrial customers, and adjust electricity consumption when the demand for energy peaks. As a result, CPS Energy will have additional tools to enhance the stability of the Texas electrical grid, especially on hot summer days when air conditioners and other cooling equipment are often running at capacity. The program is expected to be the largest ADR deployment by a municipal utility, and will build on a successful pilot project that CPS Energy and Honeywell completed last year. The pilot included nine commercial and industrial facilities, and helped trim demand by approximately 1.5 megawatts (MW) — a more than 10 percent reduction in each building on average. Honeywell and CPS Energy will look to enroll 60 additional sites, bringing the potential reduction to nearly 6 MW, enough electricity to meet the typical load of more than 2,200 homes.

“Shifting demand is simple in theory, but making the right connections with the right energy loads and delivering repeatMEMBER able results is critical to having the lasting impact utilities need,” said Jeremy Eaton, vice president of Honeywell Smart Grid Solutions. “We assist customers like CPS Energy in striking this balance to help create a more stable, sustainable grid.” ISO 9001 & AS 9100
Extreme temperatures can put stress on power lines and transformers, and have historically required utilities like CPS Energy to fire up “peaking plants” — small power plants that usually sit in reserve to produce additional electricity to meet consumer demand. ADR serves a similar purpose; however, the concept centers on working with utility customers to temporarily use less energy, rather than building costly plants. “Our commercial demand response program is a win for both sides,” said David Jungman, CPS Energy’s vice president of Corporate Development and Planning. “It helps us save energy for the electrical grid, but also helps local companies reduce their energy use and ultimately improve their bottom line.We think ADR is another valuable resource www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

to conserve energy and ensure the reliability of the state grid.” As part of the program, Honeywell will identify and enroll customers, audit their buildings to identify curtailment opportunities, and work to customize and implement changes that trim energy use, but don’t impact core business functions. In return for joining, customers receive an incentive for each kilowatt they’re able to shed. The hardware and software installed can also help each organization better manage electricity use every day and boost long-term energy efficiency. Honeywell will also provide its Akuacom Demand Response Automation Server, software as a service (SaaS) that enables CPS Energy to send signals to building automation systems at sites enrolled in the program, triggering the short-term load-shedding measures the customer selects — heating and cooling adjustments, and subtle changes in lighting, for example. The most expensive conventional weapons program in history just scored a major win, with the F-35 program’s estimated acquisition costs plunging $11.5 billion. This is no program estimate that critics might savage. This comes from the Government Accountability Office’s definitive annual Assessment of Selected Weapons Report. The GAO did not mince words in identifying the biggest winner in its analysis of the Pentagon’s major weapons programs: The most significant of these decreases is the $11.5 billion reduction to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program’s estimate, due solely to efficiencies found within the program as no decrease in quantities was reported.

Lockheed Martin’s management of the F-35 came in for a mix of praise and criticism from GAO, especially on production. “The contractor uses statistical process controls as one means to assess critical manufacturing processes. Twenty five percent of those processes are currently judged capable of consistently producing quality parts at the best practice standards,” the report says. “Production efforts have improved as the production line continues to show efficiencies and quality metrics show positive trends. However, in 2013, problems with engine hoses, engine turbines, and specialty metals halted production deliveries for three months. In 2013, 35 planes were delivered to the government—eight less than originally planned. Aircraft deliveries were postponed for one month while the runway at the final assembly facility was resurfaced.” Overall, the GAO gave the US military some credit for improving its management of taxpayer dollars. While the overall size of the Pentagon’s acquisition portfolio rose, GAO says that was due to a “few” programs. “The estimated cost of DOD’s 2013 portfolio of 80 weapon programs is $14.1 billion more than the 2012 portfolio of 85 programs. The 80 programs within this year’s portfolio have had estimated cost increases of $12.6 billion against their estimates from a year ago and an average of 2 months increase in schedule,” GAO says. “This increase masks otherwise positive trends as 50 of 80 programs in the portfolio decreased their total acquisition costs and the majority of the cost increases can be traced to either the effects of additional procurement quantities or inefficiencies experienced in a few programs.”

Boeing turns over advanced rocket fuel tank to NASA for space testing The company proved that Tuesday when the NASA Superguppy aircraft took off from Boeing Field carrying a Tukwila-made carbon composite fuel tank of a new type that could sometime fly to Mars. The 18-foot-diameter tank is 30 percent lighter than a comparable metal tank, a huge gain when each pound saved means more payload can be lifted into space. And in another advance, the tank was built from a new generation of carbon composites that doesn’t require expensive and lengthy curing in an autoclave, according to information from NASA. The tank is to store liquid hydrogen for use as fuel during deep space exploration. This means the tank must be strong enough to withstand the G forces of launch, and also able contain the very cold liquid hydrogen without leaking. The near-spherical tank, fabricated by robots at the Boeing Developmental Center, will be carried by the Superguppy to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., for testing. It is to arrive Thursday.
Japanese airline JTA orders 12 737s worth $1.1B
Alabama researchers will fill the tank with liquid hydrogen, partly to see if any micro-leaks develop because of the extreme cold.
Boeing Co. said Japanese airline Japan Transocean Air has ordered 12 737-800 airplanes worth $1.1 billion at list prices.
“Advances in composite materials and manufacturing offer some of the greatest potential for improvements in cost, schedule and overall performance for a wide range of NASA missions,” said John Vickers, the program manager for the Composite Cryotank and Technologies Demonstration project at the NASA Marshall Center, in a release.
JTA is a member of the Japan Airlines based in Okinawa and currently operates a fleet of 737-400 airplanes on domestic routes linking Okinawa with major Japanese cities. The airline will have the flexibility to switch some of the planes to Boeing’s upcoming Max model, Boeing said in a statement. Boeing builds the 737, and will build the upcoming Max model, in Renton. National Solar Schools Consortium Aims to Bring Solar to Every School in America Nonprofit organizations and solar companies from across the nation last month announced the launch of the National Solar Schools Consortium at the widelyattended National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Conference in Boston. The goal of the Consortium is to act as a unified voice for the growing solar schools movement, promoting the use of solar energy on K-12 and post-secondary schools, consolidating and coordinating current and future solar curriculum and resource development, and providing tools designed to help schools explore solar energy options both on campus and in the surrounding community. “It’s estimated that thousands of schools across America have already installed solar panels – but tens of thousands of others are still tethered to fossil fuels,” said Prof. Sharon Dannels, Chair of the Educational Leadership Department at the GW Graduate School of Education and Human Development. “According to a recent study of California schools, an average-sized 313 kilowatt solar system prevents the emission of an estimated 200 pounds of smog-forming pollution a year.” To kick off its efforts, Consortium representatives will be presenting at several workshops at the NSTA Conference, held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. During these presentations, teachers and other education professionals will be encouraged to share their needs for expanding access to solar energy and related educational resources for their schools. Interested stakeholders can also communicate these needs by completing a brief form on the Consortium website, www.solarschools2020.org. May SW 2014.indd 47
“More and more schools across the country are discovering the benefits of going solar,” said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). “Today, solar is the fastest-growing source of renewable energy in America, creating thousands of new jobs, pumping billions of dollars into the U.S. economy and helping to reduce pollution. For schools, solar can provide a curriculum where sciwww.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

Boeing to start demolition for 777X Everett wing plant 100% Committed to CNC Machine Tool Finance for the Manufacturing Industry!
Boeing will demolish four buildings starting May 1 to make room for the massive 777X wing plant in Everett, according to details revealed. The new building, just north of the main assembly plant, will include three 120-foot-long ovens, each weighing 2 million pounds. Those autoclaves — among the largest in the world — will cure the advanced carbon fiber wings. The plane maker declined to give a price for the new building, but in Boeing’s request for proposals for 777X sites, it valued the wing plant building and equipment at $1.5 billion to $3 billion.

The Tuesday meeting, of about nine Boeing officials and an equal group of Everett planners, mapped out the basic plan for the new building, which is to be ready for operations in May 2016, said Allen Giffen, Everett director of planning and community development. The actual permitting of the building is the next step, which follows the announcement that Boeing will assemble the 777X wing, and the aircraft itself, in Everett. The new building will require up to 700,000 cubic yards of fill dirt, to level the floor and provide support for the autoclaves, which will weigh 2 million pounds each, Giffen said. The autoclaves will be needed to cure the 114-foot carbon composite wing sections, under pressure and heat. These lighter and longer wings, and the 777X’s new engines, are to upgrade the current 777’s fuel economy. The wings also will have folding tips so the aircraft can fit in airport gates used by the current 777. “With the new composite wing manufacturing technology, we’re really excited to have that be in Everett,” Giffen said. Some observers think that even more advanced future aircraft have at least a shot at being built in Washington state because of the expertise Boeing will develop from building the wing in Everett, due to and the removal of pensions as an labor issue after the Machinists narrowly voted to accept the loss Jan. 3. Boeing plans on May 1 to start demolition of four buildings just north of the main Everett assembly plant, to make room for the wing plant, Giffen said. He did not know when construction itself will start, although he said crews will be moving utilities and an entry road prior to building. Boeing media people declined to provide further details. The new building will be no higher than the 4.3 million-square-foot Everett aircraft assembly building, which is immediately south of where the new wing plant will be. Boeing will assemble the 777X within the primary Everett aircraft assembly building, although it is not yet certain where.

San Diego International Airport Partners with Borrego Solar to Install 3.3 MW Solar System Borrego Solar Systems, Inc., a leading designer, developer, installer and financier of grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority today announced a partnership to develop a 3.3-megawatt (MW) solar system featuring solar panel arrays on the roof of the newly expanded Terminal 2 West at San Diego International Airport (SDIA) and in a section the Terminal 2 shortterm parking lot adjacent to terminal. Borrego Solar will break ground on the project in mid-2014, with an estimated completion date in late 2014. The system will generate an estimated 5.3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in its first year of operation – enough power to offset a projected 10%-13% of the energy needs for Terminals 1 and 2 at SDIA. Borrego Solar will build and finance the system through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), which will save the Airport Authority a projected $3 million to $8 million over the contract period. Using a PPA, the Airport Authootherwise pay to the local utility.

operator of SDIA. “By partnering with Borrego Solar, we will boost our sustainability efforts with clean energy generation, providing environmental benefits to the region and financial savings to the 2/5/14 2:36 P Airport Authority. And we’re happy to be working with a company that is a local San Diego success story, employing local workers in construction of this project.” In 2008, SDIA was the first major airport in the nation to adopt a formal sustainability policy, which includes a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving LEED certification in all new construction. In February, SDIA was the first U.S. airport to sign the Climate Declaration, a call to action organized by the nonprofit Ceres that urges federal and state policymakers to seize the economic opportunity of addressing climate change. In 2012, it was the first U.S. airport to publish an annual sustainability report based on Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, a reporting framework for sustainability-related performance.

Your Product Development and Manufacturing Resource
New consumer products, medical devices, marine and aerospace programs are increasing. And now with reshoring on the uptick, the demand for skilled workers is outpacing the workforce supply in all manufacturing categories. To complicate matters, an estimated 40% of current workers will retire in the next 10 years. AMTEC will provide Boeing and some 200 Snohomish county employers with graduates trained in advanced manufacturing. Students who complete the full 2-year degree will acquire a broad understanding of the full manufacturing life-cycle, including how to work in crossfunctional project teams across company silos to add value, reduce costly errors, and streamline production. The AMTEC programs will be unique from many traditional professional-technical programs. The programs are short and stackable, building to credit bearing certificates and a college degree. For more information about AMTEC call 425-267-0150 or email learn@everettcc.edu: Look for updates on AMTEC progress in future issues of A2Z Metalworker magazine. Intel invested $740 million to buy 18 percent of Cloudera Intel Corp’s investment in Cloudera announced last week amounts to $740 million and gives the chipmaker an 18 percent stake in the distributor of software for crunching Big Data, Cloudera said in a press release.
VMi Series
General Purpose / Machining Centers.
The chipmaker’s investment values the startup, expected to go public later this year, at about $4.1 billion. In the release, Cloudera announced the completion of a $900 million round of funding, which it said includes Intel’s previously undisclosed stake and another $160 million that was announced earlier in March from T Rowe Price, Google Ventures and others. Intel said last month it had made a “significant” investment in Cloudera and that it would make the fast-growing startup its preferred distributor of “Hadoop” data management software. Like rivals HortonWorks and Pivotal, Cloudera focuses on helping corporate customers manage data through Hadoop, an open-source software system that can sort and analyze massive amounts of information, increasingly called Big Data, generated through the Internet and mobile devices. As part of the deal, Intel will transition away from its own customized version of Hadoop that it had been promoting as optimal for Intel server chips.

The size of Intel’s investment in Cloudera and the end of its own Hadoop customization underscores a willingness by CEO Brian Krzanich to move decisively since taking over a year ago with the personal computer industry in a tailspin.
Big Data is a key part of the Internet of Things, a term referring to the increasing connectivity of everyday devices from cars to smoke alarms. Finding ways to analyze and make use of vast amounts of data collected by those smart devices is becoming a major opportunity for IT companies including Intel.
2/13/2014 4:45:51 PM
Cloudera is only one of several Silicon Valley startups to receive multibillion-dollar valuations from investors recently, a trend that has some on Wall Street concerned about lofty prices.
After falling behind in making chips for smartphones and tablets, Intel aims to make sure it is a major player in the Internet of Things by supplying processors used in new devices as well as the server hardware and software used to analyze the data those devices create.
Intel hopes that encouraging more companies to leap into Big Data analysis will lead to higher sales of its high-end Xeon server processors. The chipmaker believes that hitching its wagon to Cloudera’s version of Hadoop, instead of pushing its own version, will make that happen faster.
Intel’s bet on the success of Cloudera dwarfs its previous investments focused on data center technology. In 2007, Intel invested $218 million in VMWare, giving it a 2.5 percent stake in that data center software maker.

The Foundation increased its 2014 equipment and software investment forecast to 4.2 percent, up from 3.1 percent growth forecast in its 2014 Annual Outlook released in December 2013. The Q2 report expects equipment and software investment to steadily grow over the next six months as economic conditions solidify and business confidence continues to recover. The Foundation report, which is focused on the $827 billion equipment leasing and finance industry, forecasts 2014 equipment investment and capital spending in the United States and evaluates the effects of various related and external factors in play currently and into the foreseeable future. William G. Sutton, CAE, President of the Foundation and President and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, said, “The Foundation’s Outlook report reflects a strengthening economy and positive trends in equipment investment. fundamentals and replacement demand, we remain optimistic about growth.” The U.S. economy is expected to grow 2.8% in 2014, the fastest pace since the 2008-09 recession. The severe weather this winter may have trimmed GDP growth by a full percentage point, but it is expected that some of the loss will be made up in subsequent quarters. Equipment and software investment grew at an annualized rate of 8.9% in Q4 2013, following modest growth of 2.2% in Q3. Credit supply continues to improve, and credit demand has rebounded for all business sizes. Equipment and software investment is expected to steadily grow across most verticals, according to the Foundation-Keybridge U.S. Equipment & Software Investment Momentum Monitor, a newly expanded addition to the Outlook report. According to the Momentum Monitor, which track 12 equipment and software investment verticals: Agriculture machinery investment will likely see slow growth in the first half of 2014 as both farm yields and commodity prices ease. Construction machinery investment will see stronger growth later in the year, but the year-over-year growth figures will appear weak due to a high base year effect. Materials handling equipment investment will experience slightly stronger growth over the next 3 to 6 months. All other industrial equipment invest-

ment will likely see moderate growth over the next 3 to 6 months as the manufacturing sector’s competitiveness improves. Medical equipment investment will grow, but at a more moderate pace than in the second half of 2013. Mining & oilfield machinery is currently decelerating, but looks to rebound later in the year. Aircraft investment will likely slow after a strong Q4, and growth will be about average for the year. Ships & boats investment will likely continue at a belowaverage pace over the next year. Railroad equipment investment will improve from its recent contraction toward modest growth. Investment in trucks will exhibit high-single digit growth over the next 3 to 6 months as economic activity improves and diesel prices remain competitive. Computers investment will be muted in the next 3 to 6 months after strong replacement demand over the past few quarters. Software investment will be moderate in the next 3 to 6 months as companies focus on upgrading to new technology. The Foundation produces the Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook report in partnership with economics and public policy consulting firm Keybridge Research. The annual economic forecast provides a three-to-six-month outlook for industry investment with data, including a summary of investment trends in key equipment markets, credit market conditions, the U.S. macroeconomic outlook and key economic indicators. The Q2 report is the first update to the 2014 Annual Outlook, and will be followed by two more quarterly updates before the publishing of the 2015 Annual Outlook in December. ISO 9001:2008 This matters in Washington state, which is fastCertified emerging as one of the centers of the space industry. Here’s a series we did on Washington’s growing outer space industry, which just came out from behind the subscriber-only paywall, so anybody can now read it.
The series probes the emergence of Puget Sound area companies as the U.S. government backs away from dominating outer space and private industry steps in. One of the little guys making good is Tethers Unlimited, covered in our series, which on Friday announced it won a $750,000 NASA contract to develop its technology for applying additive manufacturing to deep space. This stretches the mind, but with Tethers Unlimited’s “Trusselator” technology, people will be able to construct football stadium-sized solar arrays in orbit, using structural components so delicate they’d collapse like shards in Earth gravity. In zero gravity, they’ll work fine. Here’s where we wrote about Tethers Unlimited in our series. Elon Musk, the guy who made his millions with PayPal, and who is now doing it again with the electric car company Tesla and the space launch company SpaceX, was on D.C.’s Capitol Hill this week arguing that SpaceXshould be allowed to compete against Lockheed Martin and Boeing for Air Force launches. Boeing also is going the other way, and on Friday announced its new 502 Phoenix satellite series, a line of very small satellites based on Boeing’s Phantom Phoenix series. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

The article referred to earlier-reported expansion plans for SpiceJet but refers to statements from Boeing executives suggesting that a weak currency, high fuel prices, intense airline price competition, and broadly weak economic growth could complicate the sector’s expansion in the coming years.

Veterans who served after 9/11 “have a higher overall unemployment rate than their civilian peers – but it was only about 2 percentage points higher in 2013,” according to the BLS. Additionally, they are “more likely to be employed in full-time jobs and on average earn more than peers who didn’t serve.” However, the major push across the nation to find jobs for them isn’t “just statistics,” it is “also an emotional need on the part of many Americans to connect with the 1 percent of the population that volunteered to serve during the longest stretch of war in American history.”

Is the U.S. Ready for a Cut-Rate Jet Fighter? In an age of budget-busting weapons programs and tighter defense purse strings, Textron Inc. TXT -2.54% is betting it can sell a cutrate military jet assembled in part from off-the-shelf components. Textron, the world’s largest maker of business aircraft, developed the new Scorpion jet with its partner AirLand Enterprises LLC in less than two years—a turbocharged time frame for a military plane. It borrowed technology developed for its high-end Cessna Citation corporate jets, and it added components like ejector seats from suppliers’ catalogues rather than custom designing them. Textron used its own funds—analysts estimate it spent hundreds of millions of dollars—without a contract, which is rare in an industry where companies generally secure government backing and clear design specifications before starting projects. Some prospective suppliers had so little faith in the project that they declined to take part. But Textron Chief Executive Scott Donnelly says he’s confident a global market exists for small, cheap-to-run jets able to carry out intelligence, security and reconnaissance work for the military as well as functions like patrolling borders and tracking drug smugglers. The jets can also carry weapons under their wings.
50 • Apr/May 2014
Others see limited demand for such a plane and say the market is already well served. “I just don’t get it,” says Richard Aboulafia, a vice president at Teal Group, an aerospace consultancy. He reckons demand for the Scorpion’s niche is fewer than 20 planes a year. Textron says it’s developing a price proposal for a potential governmental customer. It declined to identify the country, but people familiar with the discussions say it is in the Middle East. “The militaries of several U.S. partner nations have expressed interest and have been briefed, and proposals are being submitted,” Textron says. Providence, R.I.-based Textron, which had $12.1 billion in revenue last year, is one of the more diversified defense contractors. In addition to business jets, helicopters and military hardware such as armored vehicles and drones, it makes golf carts, car parts and what it calls the “world’s fastest lawn mower.”
Textron estimates the size of the global market at more than 2,000 planes and says the company could start to deliver them in 2015 if it wins an order this year. The Scorpion is priced below $20 million, and aims to have lower operating costs than those of pricier jets flying similar missions. That sandwiches it between slower turboprops such as Embraer SA ‘s $11 million Super Tucano—a big seller to nations in Africa and Latin America—or advanced supersonic combat fighter jets like Saab SA ‘s $43 million Gripen, and offerings from Lockheed Martin Corp. , Boeing Co. and others costing $50 million or more.
A2Z METALWORKER NW •
Experts on military aircraft are divided on the Scorpion’s prospects. The 2,000-aircraft estimate “is ambitious but reasonable,” says Kristin White, a senior associate at Avascent, a defenseindustry consulting firm. “The competition is going to be tough, but [air forces] will have to take a look” because of the price and capabilities.
www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
The Scorpion’s roots go back a decade to when entrepreneurs started developing so-called very light jets carying four or five passenger that used composite materials, lean manufacturing techniques and off-the-shelf parts. The jets were supposed to cost less than $5 million each, opening a market for private ownership beyond the elite. That vision fizzled because of development problems and scarce funding. But a group of former military officers and aerospace engineers embraced a similar notion. They formed AirLand Enterprises
and started pitching the idea of a low-cost jet to defense companies. Whit Peters, a former secretary of the Air Force who led the AirLand effort and now supports the Scorpion sales push, says many companies balked. But in 2011 he pitched the idea to Mr. Donnelly and found a fit. Textron’s Cessna unit hadn’t built a military jet for three decades, but it was developing composite technology and manufacturing for its business jets. The companies formed a joint venture,Textron AirLand, to pitch the planned plane to countries that couldn’t afford higher-end models. They also targeted the U.S. National Guard. More than half of the Scorpion prototype was built using parts developed for the Citation jet. Another 20% were acquired off the shelf. Bill Anderson, president of Textron AirLand, says two large defense contractors declined to participate in the project because they doubted the size of the market or were wary of using the lightweight composite materials increasingly used on commercial planes to build a military jet. Mr. Donnelly told potential partners to view Scorpion as a commercial project with military applications, and he urged them to be more flexible. That approach mirrors a push by Frank Kendall, the Pentagon’s acquisition chief, for companies to be more agile and develop systems in the style of Lockheed’s legendary SkunkWorks program. Under that program, small teams designed ultra-fast jets and rockets away from the traditional military acquisition process. Some suppliers agreed to back Textron’s approach for the Scorpion. Martin-Baker Aircraft Co. supplied ejector seats, donating them as part of its investment in the Scorpion. “I bought off on their vision,” says Andrew Martin, vice president, business development. The work was carried out in an unused building on Cessna’s Wichita, Kan., campus known as the Glasshouse with a team that grew from nine to almost 200. Textron managed to keep the work secret for

18 months before its unveiling last September. With the tight deadline and budget ceiling, executives approved redesigns in mere days or weeks. Wind-tunnel testing happened after the tools were already made to manufacture the jet. “We broke all the rules,” Mr. Anderson says. The ejector seats proved to be too big for the cockpit, and tailoring them to fit would have cost more than $100 million and delayed the project by 12 to 15 months. “[So] we modified the cockpit,” says Mr. Anderson, an approach that defied convention in military projects, where designs are fixed to meet strict specifications. Last year, the Northwest saw 7.7 percent of the angel group deals and just 6 percent of the dollars invested. By comparison, California had 19 percent of the deals and 20 percent of the dollars invested.
The median round size in 2013 was $600,000, which was in-line with the previous two years. The median, pre-money valuation in early-stage companies also remained steady at $2.5 million, according to the report.Yet while the median was consistent, researchers found there were more high-valuation deals in 2013 than in 2012. “The angel investing market is showing early signs of warning up, with co-investment round sizes and valuations tending upward to three year highs,” said Rob Wiltbank, vice chairman of research for the Angel Resource Institute, in a written statement. “With a continued progression toward more even distribution of investments nationally, entrepreneurs throughout the country are likely to find it easier to access angel investors for critical early stage funding.”
