tandem a group of two or more arranged one behind the other or used or acting in conjunction 1 : in a tandem arrangement 2 : in partnership or conjunction Together we are more than the sum of our parts. I watched a fierce, competitive, yet humble man work in tandem with a team of talented athletes. When the team won the championship they were elated and some cried and most hugged each other in a joyous celebration. While some of the players were interviewed, there in the back away from the camera and the microphone was Gregg Popovitch. Gregg is a man of few words but when he speaks every word counts, he wastes no breath on sensationalism. The partnership that this great coach has with his great team is the secret sauce for success and one that I am seeing in most successful companies that I have had the opportunity to interview. Hard work always pays off, but working in tandem with concerted effort, and working every day within your partnership, in conjunction with your teammates to produce a quality of life that would take ten times longer on your own, is definitely the secret sauce. The act of truly working together, thinking together, and feeling the same pride of a shared goal is a monumental force to success. The people that wear this on their lapel as a badge live and breathe the oneness that a team in tandem can only accomplish. From these accomplishments come greater satisfaction and while these successes are shared the drive for more and greater things is spawned. It’s a beautiful thing to see a company work together as if they share the same hands and mind and soul. One can actually speak for the other because they are of the same mind and same mission. We are not all leaders but we all lead by example. We are not all athletes but we all work hard at what we do and we work better in conjunction with each other and with a shared goal. It is said we are what we think, and we become what we most think about. So, if our thoughts are trained on a common goal of satisfaction, a joyous outcome, and a shared win, wouldn’t we be remiss if we didn’t all work together in tandem? In this issue you will read of two great companies that have a secret sauce they would like to share with you. Thank you for your continued support!

Announcements & Releases Advanced Waterjet Technology Brings High Accuracy Laser Height Sensing for More Precise Parts
Pre-Squared Tool Steel from Diehl Steel Reduces Labor Costs
Flow International Corporation, the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of industrial waterjet machines for cutting and cleaning applications, introduces the only non-contact material height sensing solution available in the industry, the DynaBeam™ Laser Sensing System. Exclusively from Flow, the DynaBeam provides superior accuracy to traditional height monitoring methods. “We are very excited to introduce the first non-contact precision height sensor to the waterjet industry” say Dr. Mohamed Hashish, senior vice president of technology at Flow, “With this advancement we continue to ensure that our customers have the most advanced tools for the highest productivity and accuracy of cut parts.” Laser measuring is highly accurate without requiring physical contact with a material. The DynaBeam laser height sensing technology maps the natural state of materials, reducing the need for manual adjustment throughout cutting. Operators can choose between setting the standoff height between the waterjet nozzle and the workpiece before every pierce, or pre-mapping an entire workpiece quickly and easily. Used in combination with both Dynamic Waterjet® and Dynamic Waterjet XD for 2D and 3D bevel cutting the system ensures faster, more accurate waterjet cutting. “The DynaBeam is a unique combination of waterjet cutting versatility and laser precision measuring capabilities” says Dr. Alex Chillman, product team leader for Flow, “nozzle offset height can be set to an accuracy of +/- 0.1mm [0.004 inch] very quickly.”This fast, accurate, non-contact method results in no scratches to the material. The laser ensures waterjet cutting to high precision; necessary when producing close tolerance, multi-axis parts. Operators can quickly and easily cut precise parts, even when bevel cutting.
Accu-Square™, pre-squared tool steel from Diehl Steel saves tool, die and mold makers time by reducing or eliminating the need for further squaring of the blocks. It comes pre-squared on all six sides to a tolerance range of the customer’s choosing. Accu-Square is designed to help companies save time and cut costs. “While my peers didn’t believe it, the cost of having Diehl do the squaring for me was less than doing it in-house,” says Ken Seilkop, CEO of A-G Tool and Die’s parent company, Seilkop Industries, Inc., a long time user of Accu-Square. Diehl offers tool steel, alloy steel, high speed steel, carbon steel, powder metal products, stainless steel and aluminum block to tool and die makers. The owners and staff understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of not only the workplace but individual families as well. We often hear about the consequences suffered by people addicted to drugs and alcohol, along with the financial burden of litigation. However, we have to remember that one does not have to be an alcoholic or addict to have problems with drugs and alcohol. The key to solving the addiction issue and/or problems related to substance use/abuse is early intervention. Addicts and alcoholics while in their active disease, are in strong denial and often will not seek help even though they see their lives unraveling before them. Addiction is a disease that actually tells the sufferer that they don’t have a disease and that if everyone would just do as they tell them, the world would be a better place. In reality they are full of fear, shame and guilt and drink or use to numb those emotions. For this reason, drug screening can be the catalyst that moves the person into acceptance of their problem, and into a solution. The team at GS Testing are stewards of public saftey and recovery, donating lecture series on the signs and symptoms of substance abuse for churches, health professional recovery networks and family interventions.

Proclamp.com Offers AVise Handle That Adjusts Torque The Repeater Vise Handle from Proclamp.com adjusts torque - producing jaw pressures from 50 to 1400 psi. Its clutch disengages when selected pressure is reached. It allows the use of one tool to both clamp and release. It is designed for light to medium clamping - especially in the case of thin walled or plastic parts or in any situation where deflection can occur. Part deflection can occur on most materials when excessive clamping forces are used. Excessive pressure causes warping of the workpiece which can affect flatness and dimensional tolerances. The only effective way to control part deflection is by applying consistent clamping force - adequate but not excessive. The Repeater eliminates inconsistent clamping forces every time – from vise to vise, from operator to operator. Tests have shown that clamping pressures can vary greatly from operator to operator. Proclamp also offers a Calibration Gauge to verify pressure settings, allowing for minor differences between Repeaters and between vises. The psi reading can be noted on a traveler so the operator can set the Repeater on the next run of parts. Proclamp. com also offers a pressure gauge which mounts on an arbor press - in addition to a range of workholding and clamping products. www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

The company says it can help those demanding “production runs that demand structural integrity as well as complex design requirements.” It will employ five workers in The Dalles, with two more expected to come on board by the end of the year. “Our vision is that we bring jobs, ingenuity and manufacturing back to the United States,” said Erin Stone, Integrated’s CEO, in a release. “Our manufacturing capability enables U.S. companies to manufacture their complex parts in a timely and price competitive way. “There is less reliance on offshore manufacturing which brings back jobs to the U.S. and protects valuable intellectual property.” The company also has a sales office in Bend.
Oregon And Washington Seek $70M Composites Grant (Don’t Think Aerospace)
OIL MIST AND SMOKE IN YOUR SHOP? Low-Cost, Highly Efficient Mist and Smoke Collectors Designed Specifically for the Metalworking Industry
Oregon and Washington are finalists for a $70 million federal grant to set up an advanced carbon composites manufacturing center. But it won’t be for aerospace. That’s right, the aerospace industry is pointedly excluded as a focus for the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation Institute grant, saidWashington state Department of Commerce Director Brian Bonlender. Instead, the grant is intended to help Washington companies develop new techniques in manufacturing carbon composites for auto parts, wind blades and pressure vessels, Bonlender said in an interview.

Deadline for the grant application is June 20, and a winner is to be chosen before the end of the year. “From DOE’s perspective, composites is already in aerospace and the business case is easy to make for that,” said Bonlender. “In order to get composites in other sectors, the costs have to come down.” State leaders debated whether it was even worthwhile to pursue the A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Because aerospace is specifically excluded, we wouldn’t make it past the first round,” he said. “We thought long and hard about that. We came to the conclusion it was an opportunity our region could not pass up.” Winning Boeing’s promise to manufacture the 777X wing inWashington — a promise that arrived with the Machinists Union’s approval Jan. 3 of a contract extension — will help even more. “In terms of mass manufacturing large carbon fiber components, we are among the top in the world,” Bonlender said. “We’re leveraging our capabilities in aerospace to say we can leverage our capabilities to other industries, to find ways to reduce those costs.” Oregon is teaming with Washington in the grant, although Washington is the lead. If it wins Washington would open a facility, likely to be located in King, Snohomish or Pierce counties, but not at a university. Source: Puget Sound Business Journal
Manufacturing Summit Honors Growing California Companies The California Manufacturers & Technology Association is launching a recognition program for manufacturers of with its Champions of Manufacturing Summit in Sacramento. For its inaugural year, the association picked seven companies to highlight at the free event from 10 a.m. to noon June 18 at the Sacramento Convention Center. One the honorees is Parallax Inc., a Rocklin company literally www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
started out of a garage in the late 1980s. It makes micro-controllers used in all kinds of electronics, many of them used by hobbyists and enthusiasts. The summit will be hosted by comedian and radio personality Adam Carolla and Gov. Jerry Brown has been invited to speak. This year’s honorees are: Sierra Nevada Brewing from Chico; California Steel Industries from Fontana; Vista Metals from Fontana; Parallax; Fathom 3D from Oakland; Keystone Engineering from Long Beach; and California Custom Fruits & Flavors from Irwindale. “All you hear about is companies looking to move out of state, but there are many important companies that are succeeding in California,” said Gino DiCaro, spokesman for the association. The CMTA picks about seven companies to honor every year. The companies were nominated by regional and local economic development groups and agencies, DiCaro said. Parallax engineers, designs, builds and does technical support for a host of products, said Bonnie Teuton, human resources manager with Parallax. Started by Chip Gracey in 1987, Parallax has grown to 36 employees. In addition to serving the hobbyist market, the company offers discounts to educational buyers and teaches teachers how to use its products to get students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum. Parallax components range from programmable chips to complete kits to make remote-controlled helicopters and multi-blade flying machines. “Kids get really interested when you show them a robot, and even more so if it is flying right near them,” Teuton said. Sarepta Buys $25M Massachusetts Facility, Says All’s Well In Oregon
The Cambridge-based biotech firm, which plans to file for U.S. approval by the end of the year for a drug to treat Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, said it has an agreement to acquire the facility for $25 million. The company used to be known as AVI Biopharma and was based in Oregon. It still owns a manufacturing facility in Oregon, and spokesman Jim Baker said there are no plans to get rid of it. “This is really part of a larger strategy,” he said. The company also works with several contract manufacturers around the world. 16 •
Baker said it’s unclear yet how many of the facility’s 40 employees will be new hires. Sarepta (Nasdaq: SRPT) now employs 150 people, 80 of whom are in the company’s Kendall Square headquarters. “This strategic acquisition complements our existing internal manufacturing capability and global network of suppliers,” said Chris Garabedian, president and CEO of Sarepta, in a prepared statement. “While we scale up to address the potential U.S. commercial demand for our lead product candidate eteplirsen in the event of an approval next year, the addition of internal resources will enhance our ability to advance the development of our broader exon skipping platform and explore the potential of our technology platform in other therapeutic areas.”

Vigor Industrial and Oregon Iron Works will join forces as the companies seek to attract larger projects that bring more jobs to the Pacific Northwest. The move gives the Portland area a potentially big-time contributor to the international industrial manufacturing scene. The combined com-
pany will employ about 2,300 people in Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Terms of the deal weren’t released. Vigor, which builds and repairs ships from its North Portland base, generated $500 million in revenue during 2012, the most recent year for which figures are available. It employs 1,800 workers. Oregon Iron Works generates around $100 million in yearly sales. It was founded in 1944 and is headquartered in Clackamas. The company employs 480 workers is perhaps best known for the work of its subsidiary, United Streetcar, which has built streetcars for Portland and other cities. It will become a wholly owned Vigor subsidiary. The merger is easily the largest pairing of two Oregon companies in the last 10 years. As a point of reference, last year’s largest merger of two Oregon companies, which teamed Pacific Continental Corp. and Century Bank, produced a business with a base value of $13 million. The companies agreed to terms yesterday. The merger will take effect in late June. Vigor CEO and owner Frank Foti said no jobs will be lost. Indeed, www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
he expects the strategy will allow the company to add jobs as Vigor extends its products and services. “We won’t lose anyone: It’ll be just the opposite,” Foti said. “Oregon IronWorks’ expertise in complex fabrication can be played out with our larger facilities in Oregon,Washington and Alaska. And, this is the corporate headquarters for Vigor and Oregon Iron Works. You get a larger critical mass of employment, which offers the ability to effectively retain and maintain a skilled workforce and develop leaders. Hardware Companies Get Some Love The dozen or so technology incubators in the region are filled with promising software companies. Now hardware companies have another incubator to call their own. Beaverton-based Axiom Electronics, a contract manufacturer that makes electronic systems and other infrastructure that supports the Internet and the emerging Internet of Things, recently launched E1ectr0n. The incubator, which will be housed at Axiom’s Northwest Von Neumann Drive headquarters, will offer office space, access to equipment, technical support, prototyping and perhaps funding to one or two startups. While small, Axiom expects the incubator will not only provide an assist to an electronics startup or two. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

North San Jose’s ‘Renovation Row’ Lures Manufacturer Away From Sunnyvale Vander-Bend Manufacturing will move its operations and 450 employees to North San Jose after signing a long-term lease for more than 200,000 square feet in one of the larger deals this year.

Vander-Bend, a contract manufacturer that has long been based in Sunnvyale, has leased 2701 Orchard Parkway, a 207,000-squarefoot, single-story building that owner LBA Realty bought in 2011 www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
for about $14 million. The lease allows Vander-Bend, which is currently in four buildings totaling roughly 175,000 square feet, to get under one roof with room to expand. “We had pretty much maxed out in this neighborhood,” General Manager Steve Wolf told me. “We looked in various places, including the East Bay, looked north and south. The particular site we’ve chosen is a very attractive neighborhood, it’s close to our customers and where we are now.” Vander-Bend, founded in 1980 by Bill Vanderbeek, started out doing precision sheet metal for the electronics industry, such as building computer cabinets, enclosures and brackets. Still family-owned, today its workers also offer precision machining, cable-harness manufacturing and value-added assembly operations for mechanical and electro-mechanical products. It has about 230 customers including KLA Tencor, Varian Medical Systems, Tesla, Facebook and Flextronics. The transaction is notable because it is the first large lease in a neighborhood that has been Ground Zero for the region’s renovation craze. In a trend I’ve written about before, investors have been snatching up decades-old R&D buildings and renovating them in hopes of boosting rents and landing tenants priced out of newer Class A product. While it’s occurring throughout the Bay Area, the trend has been especially visible in and around Orchard Parkway. Source: Silicon Valley Business Journal
Volcano To Buy Menlo Park-Based Atheromed For $115M
Volcano said that in addition to paying $115 million in cash at closing, which is expected to occur in the current quarter, it plans to make a $15 million milestone payment if an AtheroMed catheter now being considered by the FDA is cleared by November. The agreement also calls for potential future revenue-based milestone payments by Volcano to AtheroMed.
AtheroMed, which has developed an FDA-approved catheter to treat arterial disease, has agreed to be acquired by Volcano Corp. for $115 million.
Volcano CEO Scott Huennekens said his company plans to initiate a limited market release of AtheroMed’s catheter by the end of 2014 and a full market release in early 2015.
The Menlo Park company led by CEO Mike MacKinnon had raised at least $37.7 million from investors since it was founded in 2006. Its investors include US Venture Partners, Canaan Partners, the Vertical Group and Kaiser Permanente Ventures.
The company plans to begin manufacturing at AtheroMed’s facility in Menlo Park and later transition manufacturing to Volcano’s manufacturing facility in Costa Rica in late 2015. Source: SiliconValley Business Journal

How Zero Motorcycles Builds The Tesla Of Two-Wheelers In Silicon Valley Cimetron_CCI.indd 1
1/16/13 10:45 AM
About 45 miles south of the Silicon Valley factory where Tesla Motors is building out the electric automobile industry one car at a time, Zero Motorcycles is undertaking a perhaps more difficult task.
torcycles on its two assembly lines in Scotts Valley. All told, about 120 people work at Zero, which ships bikes to dealerships in North and South America as well as Europe. Zero represents the rare Silicon Valley enterprise that actually builds physical things, and for the foreseeable future keeping the design and production functions of the company together in Scotts Valley makes sense because product iterations are easier to manage in house, CEO Richard Walker said. To grow, Walker is relying on wider acceptance of electric vehicles (thanks,Tesla) and a three-pronged strategy that targets consumer sales, fleet customers like police departments and sales of its power trains to makers of ATVs and other small vehicles. “The benefit we have is the focus on electric cars and the progress Tesla has made,”Walker said. “Consumers generally understand that electrics are viable alternatives to gas products, and that’s carrying over into the motorcycle space.” Walker cites a 400 percent increase from last year in consumer requests for test rides as evidence of that acceptance. He said that ideally, Zero will hit profitability before the end of 2015. Zero competes against both gas motorcycles as well a fractured field of other electric motorcycle manufacturers. A looming question for any upstart like Zero is what happens when the established powers — in this case the Hondas,Yamahas and Suzukis of the world — decide to attack the electrics market. Already, other manufacturers make electric scooters, a slightly different market. A 2012 study by Pike’s Research pegged Zero ahead of the electric motorcycle competition in terms of strategy and execution.
The company, based in Scotts Valley, is vying to establish itself as the dominant seller of electric motorcycles globally. Zero shipped about 1,300 of its bikes last year — an increase of about 30 percent from the year before. By comparison, sales of Tesla’s Model S increased more than eightfold to 22,477 units in 2013.
To chisel away market share from established gas-motorcycle manufacturers, Zero is relying on the magic of electric motors, which can generate tremendous torque (the force that spins your car’s wheels and pulls you into your seat when you floor the pedal.)
Zero puts together its lithium-ion battery packs and assembles about 300 parts into full mo-

A gas-powered Honda CBR650F (which has a 649 cc engine) starts at about $8,500. The limiting factor for Zero’s bikes — as with Teslas and all electric vehicles — is battery capacity. Zero’s appeal for both consumers and fleet buyers has moved in correlation with its motorcycles’ range. The company now offers a model with an optional battery pack that extends its range to about 170 miles of city driving. That puts police departments in Zero’s marketing sights, Walker said. The company has sold motorcycles to 20 smaller departments (including the San Jose State University police department) and is knocking on bigger departments’ doors, Walker said. It’s a remarkable evolution for a company that was started in 2006 by former NASA engineer Neal Saiki, who initially created a dirt bike model. Saiki left Zero in 2011 and is currently developing a line of electric bicycles through his company NTS Works, based in Santa Cruz. Zero plans to propel its growth plans with its private equity financiers, Invus LP.That keeps Walker from having to distract himself with trips to Sand Hill Road to court venture capitalists. “Invus has been with the company a long time and they’re strategic www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

Far Northern California Takes Steps To Enter Global Markets The California Community Colleges system has launched an export survey in far northern California intended to help bring international trade to the region. The survey was released earlier this month to more than 500 businesses across north California counties north of Butte. The idea is to facilitate the same kind of trade activity that is active in more southern regions that includes hosting delegations, trade summits and trips. The information from the survey would assist in the opening of a new regional Center for International Trade Development, a state-funded program that administers trade networking programs. Follow the LeaderCascade Systems Technology Cascade Systems Technology (CST) is a cutting edge design and contract manufacturing leader and an employee owned company that holds true perfection as their goal with 100% inspection of every assembly they make, every day, all the time. The company started in Steve Batti’s (President, CEO of CST) house with humble beginnings; Steve’s business started with a dream to build his own product with $5000.00 startup money from Grandma, and 2 rooms in his house converted to cable harness tester work stations, with Steve’s children helping and learning to solder components. Steve Batti is an electrical engineer and graduated from Purdue University in 1973. He started writing software as a consultant and designed some products that he was going to sell. Steve said, “ I didn’t know how to do marketing, but I designed the products and engineered what I felt was a solution. I really didn’t know how to sell the products but I knew they were needed and that they worked well. I had quit my job at Miles Laboratories to develop the business, but was unable to make it work, and within seven months, I had to find a job. After taking a job at Phillips, I wound up on the team that developed what is now the CD (Compact Disk). After a few years, Phillips decided to move our development team to Knoxville so, I decided to move on and got a job at Arrow Electronics first as outside sales, and then later, in a few months as an applications engineer. There, I learned how to sell. That was kind of a trial by fire; I was thrown in the field and told to sell. Previously, as a bench engineer, I had no experience at selling or, how to network so I was really out of my comfort zone. I learned to sell by asking questions and asking potential customers what they needed help with. I then worked hard to come up with solutions.” While working for Arrow, Steve spent evenings and weekends designing products that went into pizza ovens and other food products. Steve designed great ideas and then the customer asked who was going to make it for them. That’s how Steve got into business. Steve said, “I moved from my house business setting in Indianapolis into a real building where I had to buy real equipment to build production. In 1989 our Indiana based company branched out to build an Oregon facility with the profits from the Indianapolis facility.” Both companies eventually were sold in 1994 and Steve stayed on as division president and ran the Oregon branch from Indianapolis. In 1996 he bought back the Hillsboro, OR operation and moved to Oregon full time. He says, “It was a great move and I always wanted to live in Oregon.” Mary Lou, (CST General Manager) had been running production at the Oregon facility since 1991. While running production, getting new accounts and keeping accounts from the inside, quoting, and supporting the customers, she took care of purchasing, and wore most of the company hats. Mary Lou says, “In those days we all just did what ever we had to and made it work. We have really grown and we continue to grow and growth means hiring quality employees to handle jobs we all used to do when we were a smaller company. We are very proud of what our team has built.” Steve said, “Most times an entrepreneur is a great visionary but he or she is often terrible at things that are happening right now, multitasking, and being in the trenches. Most entrepreneurs cannot be both of those people. Mary Lou was instrumental in growing this company from that side because I could not do it and I still can’t do it.” Mary Lou, agreed and said, “Steve’s the future, and I’m the ship it now person.” Steve goes out to the customer and works with the engineering teams and Mary Lou runs the day-to-day operation from inside the business.Today Mary Lou has recruited help for various functions like purchasing, and production so that she can focus on the growing business. Julie Moore (Field Sales Manager) came on board to become an integral team member of CST 8 years ago. Julie says, “When I came to Cascade Systems I was given such a great opportunity to get hands on manufacturing training. I came from distribution sales and I did not have the manufacturing knowledge Steve and Mary Lou have, so it was wonderful to get my hands dirty so to speak and learn. I was taught by the best and I truly mean that. Steve is a genius with many patents under his belt and Mary Lou is amazing, she has literally run this company single handedly in time past doing many of the jobs we have recently filled with talented people Mary Lou has hired. I am proud to be a member of this great team.” Steve continued, “CST is a leading edge technology company. We invest heavily into cutting edge technology and we really welcome projects that are very difficult. We listen to what the customer needs and where they are going and we will design a solution, prove the solution, and even design a testing system and procedure to propel them into a successful production mode. This adds new vertical markets for us and still allows us to maintain all of our core competencies. We are very diverse and we work with our customers to pioneer new directions and we rise to the occasion by developing new, high tech alternatives, like nanotechnology for example.”With electronics packages getting smaller and smaller, CST’s machinery is very versatile and flexible and they can handle all size technologies from micro to large, from hard to near impossible. CST loves to rise to the challenge. Steve says, “As long as you stay in your comfort zone you don’t learn anything new and you don’t grow or hone your skills.” Another example of CST’s company model of pushing themselves to the next level is evidenced in their early history where the company was making through-hole technology PC boards (a standard type of printed circuit board at the time) for one of their customers. In the mid 80’s Steve and his team saw the next wave of technology on the horizon, (SMT) surface mount technology. SMT assembly was easier to automate, faster, a much smaller package, and a very cost effective way to produce printed circuit board assemblies. They invested time and money into re-designing their customer’s through-hole PCB’s to SMT boards and started production very soon after their re-design as a state of the art surface mount device manufacturer. Part of the message is value; the CST Team takes the customers’ design, R&D, fixturing, testing, and shipping over as the customer’s partner. They take products from conception to the delivered, tested, boxed and shipped assembly direct to the customer’s customer. People like working at CST and are proud to help their customers be successful. CST is an employee owned company (an ESOP company) and this team owned company has one goal with their concerted effort, to make their customers successful, period. To meet this goal of helping their customers the CST Team is highly trained, both internally with a designated company mentor and education through classroom time. All employees live and breathe quality manufacturing electronics training through IPC-A-610, a world class training specification. IPC (originally known as the Institute for Printed Circuits) is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a standards developing organization and is known globally for its standards. It publishes the most widely used acceptability standards in the electronics industry. Quality is generally maintained with a degree of control. CST turns up the heat of quality by maintaining document control throughout the company with read only monitors at every workstation. Practical process improvement is lived and is a CST motto. There is no substitute for quality. A company can be the best at delivery, and a fair market price is always sought after. But, if you lack quality everything else is for naught. CST lives in quality. CST runs a very tight ship; But CST is not ridged. If a customer doesn’t fit the company mold CST doesn’t say, sorry we don’t do that or our business model doesn’t support this. www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker

Six months after purchasing the headquarters of the San Jose Mercury News, Super Micro Computer Inc. is contemplating building more than 1.5 million square feet of industrial and office space on the site. That would make the project potentially one of San Jose’s largest manufacturing centers, and it also hints at strong growth to come from the computer-server maker. In total, the 36-acre site at 750 Ridder Park Drive could include four buildings with 455,000 square feet of manufacturing space; 795,000 square feet of warehouse; 280,000 square feet of office; and a 2,000car parking garage. The proposal, disclosed in a planning application submitted last week, is still in the early stages and could change. The project would be built in phases, and the total amount of space would rank it among the largest expansions of a manufacturer in the area in recent years.
San Jose-based Super Micro, founded in 1993 by current CEO Charles Liang, has been growing strongly in recent quarters. It employs 1,564 workers as of its last annual report in June. About 1,100 of those are based in San Jose.

Emirates airline’s decision to cancel its purchase of 70 Airbus A350s could prove a further boost for Boeing’s 777. That’s because by turning away from the European company’s twin-engine, twin-aisle aircraft, Emirates may be opening the door to buying more 777s to fill its capacity needs.

Marketcraft Industries, A Veteran Owned Company Elevating Their Customers Above Their Competition On January 1, 2011 John Johnson started Marketcraft Industries. John started with a life long dream of owning his own business and with a major Mantra; Focus on the two major assets, Employees and Customers. John said, “If I make both successful, employees and customers, everything else will follow. I have created a platform for my employees to be successful. They have the tools, great tools and they bring their ambition to work every day. Our successful employees help make our customers successful.” John worked as a minority owner for a company for many years in the marketing support industry and helped it grow to over ten million dollars. It got so big he really didn’t enjoy it any more. In 2007 John sold his minority interest in the company and with the goal of owning his own business he set off for new destinations; he had a truck, he had tools, and he had a great work ethic. The only wrinkle in the plan was he had a 3-year non-compete clause. His Grandfather told him a long time ago, “if you have a truck, tools, and are willing to work (not lazy) you will always have a job.” John got his contractors license in 2008 and worked very hard as a contractor during our nations economically roughest years, and he would not have changed a thing. After the dust settled on John’s non-complete agreement he set out to create a business that would support 10-15 families. John’s business supports 12 families now. Knowing the marketing support business very well, John set out to please some of the biggest names in the business with state of the art marketing displays, Nike, Callaway, & Columbia to name a few. John continues to build his business by listening to the customer and when his customers continue to push for all operations to be faster and more cost effective that dictates, keep the operations in house as much as possible. John said, “we strive to keep all of the engineering, routing, mill work, waterjet cutting, welding, silk-screening, painting, assembly, and many other processes under our roof. This cuts turn around time, cuts cost, increases quality through strict control, and makes our customers very happy. We are able to take a napkin sketch, a print, or a CAD file, to the delivery of the product from one location.” www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
A few months ago John was in the market for what he thought was a laser-cutting machine. He consulted a trusted Dealer of machine tools Fahey Machinery and asked for advise on the type of laser cutting machine he should purchase. After Fahey surveyed his current business, requirements and current workload he was surprised that Fahey told him he really did not need a laser-cutting machine at this time in his business. He was told he needed a waterjet cutting machine. With the waterjet machine he can cut all types and thicknesses of materials, from foam to stainless steel and plastic. John was most surprised because the purchase saved him countless thousands of dollars on the initial purchase and the waterjet was a perfect fit to his business. John said, “I spent months researching what waterjet to buy once Fahey helped me realize I really needed a waterjet. I looked first at about 15 different brands and then narrowed it down to about 5.The last shop I worked at used Fahey Machinery and they were very trusted and always took the time to sell us what we needed not what would benefit them, so I relied heavily on Fahey to educate me on waterjets. I finally bought the Maxiem by Omax. It’s built in Kent, WA USA and I’m proud of that. The Maxiem has been perfect for us and we just recently won a job no one else could do in house. The two-part material of plastic on steel was easily cut by the Maxiem waterjet and our parts have made the customer very happy and we have cut the time to market substantially.” John continued, “we made our customer successful. Our job is not just to build stuff, it’s to make all of our customers successful!” Marketcraft makes turn key marketing displays for their customers to enhance and present their products, in a manner that elevates them above their competition.

As helium 3 is collected from aging warheads, the supply of the gas has dwindled as the U.S. nuclear arsenal has grown smaller. That has prompted the Pentagon’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency to seek out promising new technologies that can supplant the use of helium 3 in detection devices, which are used to find radiological substances. Officials fear that attackers could pair these substances with conventional explosives to disperse harmful radiation across a wide area.

To that end, the agency has awarded a $2.8 million contract to Alion Science and Technology of McLean, Va., to further its research into a next-generation detection system that utilizes bundles of thin copper tubes coated with boron. The current generation of helium 3-powered detectors can alert authorities to the presence of a nearby radioactive source, but these systems cannot determine the direction from which the radiation is coming. Alion plans to use its Pentagon funding to give its boron-coated “straw” sensors the ability to pinpoint the direction of a source. “By researching the means to make the boron-coated straw detector more precise and more reasonable to produce, Alion can help [the Defense Threat Reduction Agency] employ improved technologies to mitigate threats effectively and keep warfighters and citizens safe,” company senior vice president Terri Spoonhour said in a released statement. “But, beyond providing a drop-in replacement for He-3 detector components, this engineering effort opens up a number of possibilities for new or enhanced portable systems that can be carried into questionable areas or permanently installed to protect ports and depots.”

to increase efficiencies to compete in a rapidly changing market. About half of the new 127,525-squarefoot building will be dedicated to production, allowing Insitu to use more streamlined manufacturing techniques, said Jenny Taylor, director of facilities. “It gives us the ability to consolidate and be more efficient, lean and better meet our customers’ business needs and expectations,” she said. The ribbon cutting to open the building, located on the Columbia River in Bingen,Wash., is scheduled for June 12. People will start moving in the week after that. About 150 of the company’s 800-person work force will be housed there. When the building is occupied, the company will drop from 19 buildings to 12, Taylor said. At its peak, the company was in 28 buildings, many of them quite small. “We grew so rapidly, we took on whatever mom-and-pop storefront we could find,” Taylor said. Insitu, purchased by Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) in 2008, produces two pilotless aircraft in the middle range of the size spectrum.

While most of Insitu’s sales have been to the Department of Defense, the company is now facing declining defense budgets. So it’s moving toward the commercial drone market, and overseas, for growth. “We are geared up for the wind-down in Afghanistan, and will be ready to accommodate increasing business in the international market,” Taylor said. “What this (new building) will allow us

U.S. Power Plants To Reduce Co2 Emissions The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced new regulations for existing power plants in the country. By 2030, their CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 30%.The year 2005 will be used as a baseline. With this, U.S. President Barack Obama has implemented what he had announced last summer. The standard released by the EPA enables him to circumvent Congress, where Republicans are vehemently blocking any binding climate protection measures. The regulation will take effect in one year. It will then be up to the individual states to implement the objectives of the “Clean Power Plan”. Those goals can be achieved by measures such as systems for emissions trading, better energy efficiency and green technologies. The CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants in the United States have already fallen by 13% since 2005. This means that the targeted reduction of 30% by 2030 and the interim target of 25% by 2020 are not as ambitious as they might seem. Nevertheless, this is the first time that the USA has defined mandatory targets. The Kyoto Protocol was never ratified by the country. “This is one of the most important steps that have ever been taken in climate policy by a president,” the New York Times commented.

SpaceX is on track for certification on national security launches by the end of the year despite the company’s lawsuit against the US Air Force, the company’s president said. The upstart space launch company sued the Air Force in April over a decision to award the United Launch Alliance (ULA) a guaranteed block of 36 national security launches. At the same time, the company hopes to have its Falcon 9 rocket certified by the service for military launches before the end of the year. That has created the unusual situation of a company suing its customer at the same time it is trying to win business. As Gen.William Shelton, the head of Air Force Space Command put it, “Generally, the person you’re going to do business with you don’t sue.” Speaking at an Atlantic Council event, Gwynne Shotwell, the company’s president and COO, insisted she has not seen “any impact” on the certification process since her company launched its suit. “There are two elements here,” Shotwell said. “There’s the procurement end and then there’s certification. We’ve been working with the Air Force on the certification side. There’s been a lot of rhetoric about it, but if you were to ask [Lt. Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski, the head A2Z METALWORKER NW •

of Space and Missile Systems Command] and myself, we are moving forward regardless of the activity on the other side. “The certification process is new. We’re kind of grinding it out together, paving the way for the next set of new entrants.” Shotwell expressed confidence that the Falcon 9 will be certified before the end of the year, but acknowledged the new certification process is putting strain on the service. Because of that, SpaceX has held off on beginning the certification process on its Falcon Heavy system, which would be able to take larger payloads into space than the Falcon 9. The Heavy will fly in “the first half of next year.” “We are going to start that process shortly,” she said of the Falcon Heavy certification. “I have to tell you, we are overwhelming the Air Fore with data and documents for review right now, so we want to keep that [Falcon 9 certification] piece on track, and we could like to enter into Falcon Heavy certification as soon as we can thereafter.” Shotwell called the lawsuit “a difficult decision to make, but I think, important…. It was the right decision then, and I don’t think it was the wrong decision now. So no regrets.” She later noted that a potential out-of-court settlement would be
www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
“the best outcome” for the suit, but declined to speculate whether the Air Force would move in that direction or what a settlement might look like.
Time Is Money. Start Here and SAVE!
The tone of Shotwell’s comments were different from those of company CEO Elon Musk, who lashed out at the Air Force in his comments announcing the lawsuit. That may be a smart idea, as she estimated that the national security market for her company is around $3 billion if certification goes through. However, she continued the company’s line of attacking ULA, a joint Lockheed Martin and Boeing venture that has had a monopoly on the Air Force’s Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle market. SpaceX and other critics claim ULA has been gouging taxpayers on the cost of launch. For its part, ULA claims SpaceX is purposefully overstating how much it costs per launch under the block buy contract. She also hit at ULA’s continued reliance on the Russian-made RD-180 engine for its Atlas V rocket. There have been threats from Russia that it could cut off supplies of the engine, potentially leaving the Atlas V grounded. “I think we’re in an unfortunate place right now in national security space launch,” Shotwell said of the RD-180 issue.

Campaign to Save America’s Steel Jobs Gains Momentum. Teamsters Union Joins Steel Industry Call for Trade Enforcement. America’s steel manufacturers and workers have joined forces to fight back against dumped imports of steel pipe used in the extraction of America’s oil and natural gas reserves. Now, another major American union is adding its support. Late last week, International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa and top railway leaders penned a letter to Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, urging a thorough investigation in the anti-dumping probe of Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) imports from South Korea. the country in recent weeks to express concern over the dumping of OCTG product, which is being sold in the U.S. at below cost. A decision on a trade case regarding dumped OCTG product from nine countries is due in July. In May, a bipartisan group of 57 Senators had written to Secretary Pritzker, calling for a full investigation of OCTG pipe imports, particularly from South Korea. In the Teamsters’ letter to Pritzker, Hoffa explained: “American steel producers employ 8,000 workers across the country making OCTG and each of those jobs supports seven more in the supply chain. The steel produced for the U.S. energy market accounts for ten percent of domestic production. It is imperative that American OCTG producers have a level playing field on which to compete.” A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Overall, defense contracting is sliding less dramatically. Since the Oct. 1 start of the government’s fiscal year through April, the Pentagon’s outlays in procurement and research and development accounts totaled $103 billion — just a 3-percent decrease from the same period a year earlier, according to last month’s financial assessment prepared by the Treasury Department’s Financial Management Service. A group of seven defense contractors and service companies including Northrop Grumman Corp. and Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. landed seats on the Defense Department’s second-largest contract in May, a deal potentially worth $877 million for the Navy’s Joint Force Development program. Specifically, the firms will provide “support for training and real-world operations by offering varying combinations of education (academics), training assessment, experimentation (war-fighting solutions), and infrastructure,” according to the announcement. A closely held company called Foster Fuels Inc. won the military’s third-largest agreement last month, an $853 million contract with the Defense Logistics Agency for fuel, according to the announcement. suppliers’ costs, as well as its own, to reduce the overall cost of production. And with Boeing in knife-edge competition against Airbus, trying to sell aircraft to airlines increasingly ready to consider price over loyalty, the pressure to cut costs is fierce. “As we expand, we’re touching more of that cost base.Targeting a 10 to 15 percent cost reduction, in partnership with our partners, creates great opportunities for us,” Muilenberg said in response to a question. Boeing’s seven-year order backlog is making the process easier, he said, because Boeing has a carrot to offer suppliers: a lot of work. “We have suppliers working with us to gain volume advantage, and offer us pricing advantages,” he said. But McNerney said that Boeing has to be genuine about meeting suppliers halfway, implicitly responding to a criticism that Boeing has been squeezing the supply chain too hard. “You’ve got to find a win-win. You just can’t go to people and say, ‘Hey, I want 15 percent of your margin for me; get back to me when you’ve got a plan.’ That’s not the way it works,” McNerney said. “You’ve got to find mutual success and mutual benefit.
500 Suppliers Now Partnering With Boeing To Cut Costs, Execs Say Five hundred Boeing suppliers are now engaged with Boeing’s Partnering for Success program, and positive results are showing up on the bottom line. That was the upbeat assessment by top Boeing executives last month, as they responded to questions about Boeing’s sometimes-controversial program for driving down suppliers’ costs. The questions came from analysts at Boeing’s annual analysts’ conference, which was scheduled at a downtown Seattle hotel. Related content: Just say no to betting the company on technological leaps, Boeing CEO says Boeing CEO Jim McNerney and Chief Operating Officer Dennis Muilenberg supplied some new data, as they made their case for why the program has been so important for Boeing. Here’s the bottom line: 60 to 70 percent of Boeing’s cost base is in its supply chain, and it must address A2Z METALWORKER NW •

“I am pleased with the progress we’ve made,” McNerney said. “A number of our biggest partners are working with us on a Partnering for Success basis. On the big-partners side, we’re making very good progress.” An especially high-profile critic of the program has been Teal Group Analyst Richard Aboulafia. In a speech before the annual Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance convention, he called it a possible “self-inflected wound.” The program is of particular interest in Washington, because the state is
home to more than 700 aerospace suppliers, some of which have been having trouble stepping up to Boeing’s cost-cutting pressures. Pointing out that Boeing launched the program in 2012, Muilenberg said negotiations with suppliers are now entering a new realm where suppliers are making suggestions to Boeing. For instance, one supplier suggested milling an internal 777 wing part out of one piece of metal rather than building it from several, and that halved the cost of the part. Another supplier had an idea for reusing software for the F-15 fighter, and that cut that cost by 40 percent, Muilenberg said. “When you add up hundreds of those ideas, we’re gaining a lot of traction here,” he said, adding that the number of ideas coming in from suppliers has increased tenfold since 2012. A Computer In Your Mirror? Electric Mirror Sees Sales Rise On Hot Demand Behind the reflection of mirrors, all kinds of technology can be hidden. “Ultimately our company is kind of a fusion of fashion and technology,” said CEO Jim Mischel. “Imagine the traditional mirror used in every home around the world practically, and combine that with technology.” Started by Mischel and his father, the firm’s first product was a mirror with built-in defogging. This has been gradually followed by mirrors with embedded flat-screen televisions, with computers, with Bluetooth music connections and with flat speakers. The biggest market is relatively high-end hotels, where the hotel wants to give customers an unusual experience, and where it’s not a bad idea to be able to hide televisions behind a mirrored expanse. “We created these product categories; they really didn’t exist before,” Mischel said. The company protects its creations with more than 36 patents, with another 30 pending. Mischel, who formerly worked as a patent attorney, said he’s constantly fighting off would-be technology thieves, but he adds that the company’s biggest defense is constant innovation. “We have a major quality advantage, and we’re always innovating,” he said. “I think that’s the trick with countries that specialize in knocking off products, is to stay ahead of the innovation curve, and we really drive those forward.” A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Mercedes-Benz Teams With Tesla On $41K Car, Taps Silicon Valley Tech For Mind-Reading Autos Mercedes-Benz first set up shop in Silicon Valley two decades ago, when Elon Musk was still a twenty-something college kid. Last month, worlds collided when the German auto company debuted its new B-Class Electric Drive model at its Sunnyvale R&D headquarters using a battery created by Musk’s Tesla Motors Inc. The electric Benz will start at $41,450 and be available this summer in select U.S. states, including California, before Musk brings his new all-electric Model X SUV to market in 2015. The debut of the B-Class marks another twist in the contentious, rapidly changing world of automotive technology, which has spurred multibillion-dollar auto conglomerates like Ford Motor Co.,Volkswagen Group and Nissan Motor Co., to set up brick-and-mortar R&D outposts in the region.

Just a few weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz USA chief Steve Cannon publicly questioned Tesla’s long-term potential when mainstream auto companies jump into the electric car game. “Good job, Tesla,” Forbes quoted Cannon saying, “but will they be able to maintain that with the others of us out in the market? That remains to be seen.” Mercedes parent Daimler AG — which brought in a $12 billion profit on $118 billion of sales during 2013 — still has a small ownership stake in Tesla. And Tesla batteries powering Mercedes’ first all-electric car may signal a line of business with staying power for Tesla. The Palo Alto-based automaker is forging ahead on a planned $5 billion battery “gigafactory,” which the company says will eventually create 500,000 battery packs per year, matching current worldwide production. Community Colleges Team Up With Industry To Provide Usable Skills Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports in “The Management Blog” that there is a growing trend across the nation to align the curriculum of America’s community colleges with the needs of employers. The blog cites several examples of how community colleges have aligned with local industries to teach usable skills, including those needed for advanced manufacturing jobs. The article calls community colleges “a vital linchpin connecting the world of learning and the world of doing.” Critics of the community college system decry the costs of these colleges to taxpayers, while proponents argue that the taxes are made up in the future through higher wages and a switch from government programs to self-sufficiency.

Your Product Development and Manufacturing Resource Let’s back up a couple of years. One day Jennie showed up on the flight deck with the first iteration of the Mini Opener, a birthday gift from her father. As she began opening those troublesome bottles, other flight attendants caught a look at the little device and wanted to know where she got it. All of her colleagues wanted one. Jennie has received the same response on every flight since. After a week or two of continuous envy, Jennie began to think their little invention could be a viable product with commercial potential. The product has evolved into a multi-purpose tool that not only makes opening those pesky little bottles a breeze but also opens both flip top and twist bottle caps but also aids in lifting can tabs effortlessly. All of the manufacturing disciplines needed are now in place. The final product will be a zinc die casting available in several finishes; raw, Electroless nickel, black nickel, and bright brass. ELFA President and CEO William G. Sutton, CAE, said: “Equipment finance companies in almost all industry sectors are reporting a strong first quarter of the year. The March data showing new business volume clearly provides evidence of a strong first quarter looking back and a positive forecast for future activity. The Federal Reserve recently hinted at continuing a monetary policy that will promote a sustained low interest rate environment at least for the foreseeable future, which is giving the business community a reason to feel confident about the overall trajectory of the U.S. economy and make capital investments in their businesses. Credit quality metrics are mixed, with delinquencies edging upward counterbalanced by monthly losses reaching historic lows. Another positive sign for the industry is the trend toward increased hiring during the past 10 months.” www.facebook.com/a2zmetalworker
Brian J. Griffin, Senior Vice President, Leasing, MB Financial Bank, N.A., said, “The continued strong metrics measured by the MLFI-25 reflect the ongoing strength of the economy and, more specifically, the leasing industry. Of particular significance is the dramatic increase in new business volume from February, the record low charge-off percentage and the continued increase in headcount in the industry. If medium- and long-term rates can remain relatively stable, these results bode well for continued growth for the balance of the year.” A2Z_Metalworker_NW-ROSCO-VM-Ad.indd 2

Tesla’s Gigafactory Materials Need Will Change We The Economy are aGlobal full service job shop, providingFor Cobalt, asGraphite much or as littleAnd project involvement Lithium as required – from tool and die design to finishing and assembly.
Tesla Motors Inc.’s planned Gigafactory battery plant is not just the biggest project that founder Elon Musk has ever attempted. It’s also tvtdiecast.com ▼ 800 280 2278 not just the largest manufacturing project planned in the U.S. right ISO 9001:2008 Certified now. It’s a historically massive undertaking that could change the economics of the battery industry overnight — something that becomes clear when you look at the gobsmacking mass of raw materials the facility must consume to reach Tesla’s ambitious production goals. Those are the conclusions of a yet-to-be-released report by Industrial Minerals Data, a research firm that focuses on raw materials used for industrial processes. Industrial Minerals analysts took a look at the potential market impact of the Gigafactory on three key minerals: Lithium, graphite, and cobalt. Tesla’s Musk envisions need for 200 Gigafactory battery plants Those aren’t the only things the Gigafactory needs, mind you, but those minerals are particularly interesting because they’re currently considered “niche” materials. Unlike, say, copper foil — which Tesla will also need a lot of — cobalt, lithium and graphite are not mined in massive quantities and they aren’t widely traded as commodities. If you need lithium to build something, for example, you need to make a deal with a mine or a chemical company that has a deal with a mine; there’s not a true, liquid market for the commodity. Consequently, a big change in demand can move the needle quite a bit — as is the case with the Gigafactory. That means the Gigafactory’s needs will ripple through the raw materials markets, potentially affecting all makers of lithium-ion batteries and the gadgets that run on them. Musk in turn has said how much he has riding on the success of the Gigafactory. If the Gigafactory doesn’t come online on schedule, he’ll face production delays for Tesla’s electric vehicles. Take his need for graphite, which Tesla will need to buy in bulk. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

Call Us Today For A Competitive Quote! www.TVTdiecast.com 800-280-2278 According to the Industrial Minerals Data report, the Gigafactory running at full capacity (using today’s technology) will consume 126,000 metric tons of raw graphite a year, in a highly refined version called “spherical graphite.” (It takes that much to make the 50,000 metric tons of battery grade graphite Tesla needs.) That’s about 34 percent world’s current supply of graphite — about 375,000 metric tons — just for the one facility. The addition of the Gigafactory, then, will spike the world’s demand for battery-grade graphite by 152 percent by the analysts’ math. To keep up with that demand, nine new graphite mines would have to be opened if Tesla’s graphite hunger is to be fed by mining. Tesla didn’t immediate respond to emails seeking comment on the report. The rub, of course, is that graphite is just carbon and can be obtained through any number of methods beyond just digging it out of the ground — it’s a bi-product of steel production, for example, or it could be repurposed from coal mines. But the world’s supply today mostly comes from cheap flake graphite mined in China that is more easily and cheaply turned into battery-grade graphite. That means that converting to another supply would add cost — not a good thing when UBS analysts peg 76 percent of the price of one of Tesla’s battery packs coming from materials costs and the stated goal of the factory is to reduce battery pack cost by 30 percent. Cobalt is another interesting mineral. According to the report, Tesla needs about 7,000 metric tons of cobalt at full capacity, which compares to a worldwide supply today of about 110,000 metric tons. But that number hides an unfortunate truth — 55 percent of the world’s cobalt comes from the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, meaning that Tesla will be working from a smaller supply if it wants to avoid the Congo entirely. It also puts the project at risk to price shocks if unrest in the region disrupts worldwide supply. And finally there’s lithium. The Gigafactory will need about a fifth of the world’s supply — 25,000 metric tons per year compared with a worldwide supply of 125,000 metric tons per year. Supplying the Gigafactory is expected to raise demand in the battery industry by about 50 percent, and demand in the overall market by 20 percent.

That’s a large number, but it looks all the more daunting when you consider Musk’s commitment to source his lithium in North America. Roughly 54 percent of the world’s lithium comes from mines in Chile. The U.S., by contrast, currently has only one mine (although it IS close to one of the proposed Gigafactory sites in Nevada). Bottom line, if the Gigafactory gets built, it will shift the global economy for these minerals by itself — and there might be a materials squeeze if suppliers don’t start ramping up to address that soon. Defense Giants Accelerate R&D But Lag Tech Firms
Manufacturers Offer Huge Benefits To Find Qualified Workers
Major U.S. defense firms ramped up internal research and development spending last year, pumping in $800 million more than a year earlier, but they still lag large technology firms in R&D investment. Collectively, Boeing Defense, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon spent $4.1 billion on R&D last year, according to data compiled by Byron Callan, defense analyst with Capital Alpha Partners; at the same time, tech giants Apple, Google and Microsoft each spent between $4.5 billion and $10.4 billion. Senate Advances Bill On Two-Year Extension Of Tax Breaks
Northrop Wins $9.9 Bln Contract For B-2 Bomber Sustainment
The AP reports the Senate voted 96-3 to open up debate on a bill that will renew more than 50 expired tax breaks and add an estimated $85 billion to the budget deficit. The Senate bill will extend the tax breaks for two years through 2015.
Northrop Grumman Corp has won a five-year contract valued at up to $9.9 billion from the U.S. Air Force to modernize and support the B-2 stealth bomber, the Pentagon announced last month.
The bill includes provisions to extend a business tax credit for research and development, a sales tax deduction for individuals who live in states without an income tax, a tax credit for using wind farms and other renewable energy sources for electricity, and provisions that let businesses write off capital investments more quickly. Although the bill enjoys broad bipartisan support, some Republicans have said they are looking to change the package.
States Move Closer To Making Cellular Kill Switches Law The Washington Post reports that it took two attempts Thursday, but California finally passed a bill requiring electronics manufacturers to install a shut-off function in smartphones. Supporters hope the bill will deter thefts of the device. Industry opposition to the bill says the measure is unnecessary. The Post also reports that the states of New York, Minnesota, and Illinois are considering similar legislation. Minnesota passed a bill requiring smartphones and cellular-connected tablets sold in the state after July 2015 to have the so-called kill switch function. A2Z METALWORKER NW •

The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract covers a range of enhancements, software maintenance, and other support services, including scheduled maintenance of the bombers, the Pentagon said in its daily digest of major contract awards. The base contract runs through May 2, 2019, and includes an option that would extend it through 2024. Northrop delivered the first of 20 B-2 stealth bombers to the U.S. Air Force in December 1993.The B-2 bombers can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons and are able to penetrate sophisticated enemy air defenses and attack even heavily defended targets.
Lockheed Martin Wins ‘Space Fence’ Contract Lockheed Martin won a highly anticipated contract to build a “space fence” for the Pentagon that can track hundreds of thousands of pieces of debris floating in orbit around the Earth. The company beat out Raytheon for the $915 million Air Force contract to build the radar system, which will be located in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
