MY REMODEL STORY Teanna Ruppel RETHUNK MY JUNK PROSOURCE OF ROANOKE (VA)
Teanna Ruppel, of Rethunk My Junk, provides a keen eye for design, creating a new way of viewing what a space could be. This is vital for a stylish outcome in the Roanoke, Virginia market, where having a designer with a strong work ethic does wonders. “You don’t want to be doing this yourself,” she said. “You want a good, working, local designer with resources. For a recent kitchen project, in order to spark that creativity in the soul of the homeowner, Ruppel showed her a variety of creative designs. “I needed to inspire the homeowners,” Ruppel said. “I showed them a few different images and was able to narrow down the style that matched their vision.” This was Ruppel’s first kitchen remodel and she saw the potential of the space, more specifically, what the backsplash could entail. “I wanted to create a focal point of the space, and an arch became such a natural choice,” Ruppel said. “It was on my mind from day one.” That required her to match the stylistic choices in color and design with the selections she had in mind. For the space, the red brick tile provided a vibrant setting to the kitchen, offering color and contrast to the lighter cabinets. “The brick tile is a showstopper,” Ruppel said. 4 | PROSOURCEWHOLESALE.COM
“It received the most compliments because of its uniqueness. Everyone seems to want to know about the brick.” The arch’s creation was the first aspect established after the gutting of the space. With moving plumbing and electrical, as well as handling the timing of all of the elements associated with a kitchen project, challenges were bound to arise. “Because it was my first kitchen remodel, establishing the structure of the timeline was an issue,” Ruppel said. “Making sure that materials were received on schedule and available when ordered is always something to keep an eye on. MY REMODEL STORY AKIO HENDERSON TILE AND WOOD DESIGN PROSOURCE OF COLORADO SPRINGS (CO)
Akio Henderson, of Tile and Wood Design, understands the importance of patience when it comes to his approach for crafting a project. Whether it is for a client or his own purposes, taking that time to check twice before you cut once, Henderson explains, can make all the difference. “So many homeowners who pursue remodeling projects save up to make that dream happen,” he said. “By taking the time and following the plan, it can make all the difference in getting the job done right.” For Henderson, that includes when he took on a project of his own by purchasing both sides of a duplex in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His plan was to revitalize them both, in order to sell them and fund his dream of creating an app that trains others wanting to become professional tile installers. “There is a shortage of qualified labor in the industry’s workforce,” he said. “I’m hoping to address that and help at-risk youth, veterans, and those with disabilities with an opportunity that makes a positive impact.” Each home within the duplex was 1,500 square feet, featuring two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. Determined to make significant changes in order to flip them back on the market, Henderson turned to ProSource Wholesale® for help. “I’ve been in construction for 26 years and understand the importance of assembling a team that can get the job done,” Henderson. “Haley [Ruff] was a big part of the team for this project. With panoramic views capturing the breathtaking Colorado mountains, the duplex nestled comfortably amid the artistic beauty of the outdoors. Henderson sought to bring that beauty inside when it came to the design. “When you walk outside and see the evergreen trees and mountains staring back at you, you want to bring those elements inward,” he said. “Frank Lloyd Wright and his vision of bringing more natural elements into home design made a significant impact on me, and I wanted that to reflect with my design choices.” By selecting Earth tones and natural wood and stone in elements throughout the home, Henderson shaped every detail with that outlook in mind. “In Colorado, you can experience all four seasons to their most extreme during a year’s time,” Henderson
said. “I wanted families to have that experience in this home. I made design choices down to how the exterior paint would look covered in snow. I was very passionate about this duplex.” That passion and particular motif led Henderson to ProSource, where he had partnered before on a few other projects. He was able to schedule an appointment and explain the design vision he had in mind. He sent over a paint sample, and by the time that he arrived for his appointment, Ruff already had tile, hardwood, and carpet samples ready for his choosing. “Every interaction made sense every time,” he said. “We’ve worked together before, and during those jobs for other customers, I would install the product and find myself saying ‘Dang… that all goes together.’ She was so good at working with them and with me during this one.” Working with ProSource especially helped when time challenges would arise, and with a project of this scale, challenges were inevitably going to occur. “In my time in construction, almost no project goes off without a hitch, and it becomes about the way you approach the plan before you begin the process of installing products,” he said.

Everything came together, and it became a forever home. It became somewhere that you could see a family living and experiencing all facets of life; birth, holidays, birthdays, and death. Derek works with clients within their budget, finding the style they’re looking for.” From there, Robbins tirelessly worked to create a rendering of the space with every detail in mind. “Derek’s 3D rendering was so incredibly intricate and thought out,” Anderson said. “He was able to make that happen and go into the drawer inserts and pull-outs. Whether it was with the clients or the manufacturers, he was as helpful and fluid as possible.” This was important, because Anderson understands the importance of getting a high-end kitchen just right for clients. “Kitchens are deeply personal,” he said. “Whether it is having a drawer in a specific spot, in order to retrieve a specific utensil, or something as preferential as choosing a flat top stove over a grated one, higher-end homes require asking the right questions about the
smallest details and then following through.” For Anderson, that follow-through comes in the joy that he feels when skillfully accomplishing the job. By taking that time to understand the ins and outs of what inspired the homeowners, he was able to have a lot more fun with the project. “It all starts with the clients’ inspiration,” he said. “Google products and styles. Use Pinterest. Come up with a few ideas and take these concepts to the ProSource team, so that when you head into the showroom and sit down with your account manager, it’s not overwhelming. Ryan Cullmann, of RC Construction, recognizes the vitality of relationships with homeowners. In his many years in the construction and remodeling industry, so many of his clients have come from connections to others that he had previously worked with, a complementary bond that allowed him the opportunity to partner with ProSource® of Fenton. “[Account manager] Lisa [Bond] and [kitchen and bath designer] Renee [Boyer] are such great partners to work with,” Cullmann said. “So much of what we do is about the relationships that we make, and I trust them with everything. As a part of a longer, more extensive project, she needed Cullmann to zero-in on remodeling the kitchen. Luckily for him, Bond and Boyer jumped in right away. “There were a couple of issues with the countertop finish, but they were addressed almost immediately,” he said. “Lisa and Renee understand the importance of fixing the problem right away.” This allowed the team to craft the kitchen of the homeowner’s dreams, leaving Cullman incredibly proud of the work that he and his partners accomplished.
“This was honestly one of my favorite projects that I’ve done,” he said. “It is such a useful kitchen with its storage and countertop space, but the coffee wet bar is just the icing on the cake. It’s just gorgeous.” With any project comes its lessons, and for Cullman, this is no exception with many aspects that he relays to new clients. “I tell potential and current clients to do their homework,” Cullman said. “You need to know what contractor is in your area and whom you’ll potentially be working with. You need to know about the materials they’re going to use. You need to know how the layout of the room is going to affect that work. Learning all of that will help eliminate headaches along the way, both for yourself and the team getting the job done.”

Working with their kitchen and bath designer, Jennifer Follin, and account manager, Tim Walsh, the homeowners were able to choose products that matched their design vision and their conversations with Diaz ahead of time. “In the showroom, the homeowners were able to choose the cabinets and floors they were looking for,” he said. “It was such a painless process.” 22 | PROSOURCEWHOLESALE.COM
“They make it so easy with their level of communication,” he said. “As a contractor, I’ve got ten to fifteen projects going on at the same time, so I’m not always available on site right away. With ProSource, they are so attentive, and it really feels like an extension of my business. They’re a great partner.” Attention is especially important with home remodeling projects. This one was no exception, as it was discovered during demolition that some of the beams needed to be modified, causing Diaz to offer a solution to save the design. “I created custom saddles for the beams,” he said. “Without them, the load-bearing beams would not have been able to be covered in the way that we
needed. It was about preserving the design concept.” ProSource also was there to solve problems when they arose during the project. “With any project, checking the products and making sure that they are exactly the way you want them is essential,” he said. “When the cabinets weren’t, Jen wasted no time and expedited new cabinets over to me. The project didn’t miss a beat.” By the end of the project, Diaz saw how everything seemed to come together without breaking the bank, fulfilling his promise to his client and continuing to grow his reputation. “It’s not about the money; rather, it’s about the good word,” he said. “I could have charged quite a bit for those saddles, but I wanted the client to stay under budget, so they were ‘on the house’. I wanted to grow my good name. That’s worth more than a hundred saddles.”
