Winter Formal Letter

dear tino students LISA ZIVANIC writerAsk them! I know, this time of year has exacerbated your fear of missing out on such a monumental aspect of high school; having a date to the dance. It’s eating you up inside, watching the elaborate winter formal proposals. You see a flash mob, everyone in coordinated colors, and people cheering. Even in the casual classroom proposals, you cannot help but watch and smile whilst the feeling of jealousy runs through your veins. But then there is the other side, the one that is not as glamorized and does not receive the same attention: the dreaded, dark and scary rejection. The awkward, “Sorry, I already have a date” or, “Sorry, I’m not going to the dance.” At a crossroad between the two possibilities, it is difficult to decide. Do you ask them? The answer is simple: yes. Despite the difficulties of not being able to predict their reaction, as scary as it is, that “sorry…” is the worst possible scenario. They are not gonna reject you and then make fun of you. The rejection is the scariest part, but the best possible scenario is the yes, the “I’d love to go with you!” or “That sounds great!” You begin to smile after imagining them say yes, and one potential awkward moment of silence should not get in the way of that joy and ecstaticism. So go! Now! Do you want to go to winter formal with me? (circle most desirable option): Yes No P.S. (Only read after asking): Aww I’m so sorry, it’ll be okay. It sucks and there is no way to sugarcoat the situation. But on the bright side, at least you know Pitbull’s been there done that. You have your group of friends, and it’ll be okay. Also, it’s their loss, since you wanted to cry, binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy anyway. Now at least you know how Taylor Swift felt writing Champagne Problems. At least they told you now before they dropped your hand while dancing. And speaking of dancing, you’re still going, just with your friends! Did Caty have a date to the dance in Mean Girls? No, but she still went to the dance with the mathletes and won spring fling queen. So good luck, and in the wise words of RuPaul, “You better work!” Sincerely,Lisa Zivanic A letter to those who fear rejection; don’t fret!
