PLAYLISTS

LETTER FROM THE EIC’S Dear Class of 2017, Here we are — at the end of the playlist we’ve worked so hard to create over these past four years. Each of us has contributed to this playlist in our own unique way. Whether it was performing at the Lenaea Theatre Festival, making the winning shot at a basketball game, or finally completing that last APES worksheet, we have created thousands of lasting memories. There will always be the songs we wish to remove from our playlist. Maybe they’ve gotten repetitive, annoying, or just outdated. But perhaps these are the most important ones to keep and cherish. As we revisit our playlist, we should be sure to treasure our favorite memories as fondly as the ones that make us cringe. All these moments were essential steps in our journey to where we stand today. From ‘Damn Daniel’ to ‘Harambe’, it would be accurate to say that we, like the popular memes we grew up with, have changed. Of course, we can’t forget the support system that helped us get here. It is with love that we remember all the teachers and staff members who contributed to our growth as students and as citizens. It has been our honor and pleasure to record some of the many amazing memories our class has made over the years. Thank you, Class of 2017, for creating such a beautiful, inspiring playlist for us to look back on. Best of luck in creating your new playlists, Melissa Silva and Meilinda Sun Editors-in-Chief of The Prospector

Dear Class of 2017, We’ve each spent around 23,400 hours on this campus. If we each took 3 tests a week, that’s over 225,000 tests we’ve collectively taken. For athletes, over 40 games; for musicians, 16 concerts. 4 dozen debate tournaments, 20 rallies, and 500 quick drinks. But these lofty numbers alone are meaningless. Instead, we should reflect upon the changes that we’ve undergone over the past 1,400 days, as a class and as individuals. We are who were are today because of the accumulation of thousands of small moments — learning to navigate through our dauntingly large campus, competing at athletic tournaments and FBLA conferences, our successes, our failures, and all the fun and stress in between. After we graduate, we will continue that process of growth and change. When we come back to visit our families, teachers, friends, and each other for reunions, neither Tino nor we will be the same. And many years from now, amidst marvelling and longing at those times gone by, maybe we can still cherish our times together. ConGRADulations and best of luck in whatever your future may hold. LETTER FROM ADMIN

To the Class of 2017: Before you leave Cupertino High School, I want you to reflect back on the past four years. What will you remember? What memory will you cherish? Were there any regrets? What have you learned from making mistakes? Were you able to discover your limitations and find your passion? As an educator, I always feel there is something more I want to teach before you leave high school. When I taught Japanese, my goal was never about teaching language. It was always about the life skills that I hoped my students would learn. I hope that the group projects taught you how to work with other people and that the class discussions taught you to be more accepting and open minded about other people’s opinions. I cherish every interaction I’ve had with students, whether that was in the classroom or in the office, for good things and for disciplinary things. Every conversation I’ve had with you was something new I learned. I learned a lot this year in my new role as an administrator and the Class of 2017 made a mark in this new chapter of my career. From the senior sunrise to now graduation, it has been an exciting school year. I look forward to seeing what you do with the lessons you have learned at Tino and I hope that you will continue learning from every experience life has to offer. Yukari Salazar

After high school, everyone has different plans, and for some, their next step is junior college. Senior Gabie Acuna is one of the students choosing to attend junior college in the fall. “I would describe junior college as a school where you would go for two years and figure out what you want to do after that. Some people want to go to get over it and then work, or some people transfer to a better school later because it is better for them financially,” Acuna said. Acuna chose to attend De Anza College specifically based on the high transfer rate to improve her chances for transferring later on. Along with the high transfer rate, it was also convenient for Acuna to attend with the proximity to her home. “My family was pretty supportive since it is kind of what they were trying to get me to do. I had no choice because even if had gone to a university I would not be able to afford it financially,” Acuna said. De Anza has a tag program guaranteeing students the ability to transfer to a UC. Through this program, Acuna intends to attend UC Irvine after two years at De Anza. “I want to become a nurse. That has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and I still want to pursue it,” Acuna said. She hopes to pursue internships involving nursing to get a sense of what being a nurse will entail. Along with searching for internships, Acuna intends to work while attending De Anza. She currently works at Haagen Dazs and plans to increase her

hours as she “[Between or college], I’d I want to finish as to nursing. Since I am

While many students are committed to 4 year colleges, Jeffrey Monteil has taken a unique path by enlisting in the Navy of the United States military. The Navy is the naval warfare branch of the armed forces and is the largest and most technologically advanced navy in the world. Monteil chose the Navy as he feels that there is the greatest room to grow and develop as a person as well as the fact that the Navy is the branch that emphasizes STEM the most. He has signed a contract for eight years of service, including two years of school. Monteil decided to join the armed services for a few reasons. The main one was

financial. The military pays for all school that a cadet attends and thanks to the G.I. Bill any college a soldier does after leaving the military is also free. The opportunity also allows for him to reset himself mentally. Monteil felt that he slacked off in high school, and the military offers him the chance to restart and shape up so he can be successful. After placing highly on an aptitude test given by the Navy, Monteil has signed to join the Navy as a cadet where he will study nuclear physics, with the end goal of being a nuclear engineer on one of the Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers or submarines. Monteil is excited by this prospective occupation and will work hard to fulfill this goal. Monteil’s journey after high school will be a little bit different from the norm, with him starting out his time at the Navy’s two month boot

camp program, where he will learn all the necessary skills required in becoming a sailor and a soldier in the United States military. After basic training, Monteil will head off to university where he will study at three different schools to learn the skills to handle a nuclear reactor. Monteil’s path is undoubtedly a unique one, and he is ready for this new chapter in his life.

ANANYA VENKATESH // WOMEN'S COLLEGE MELISSA SILVA editor-in-chief

Graduating senior Ananya Venkatesh will be attending Scripps College this upcoming fall. Scripps, located in southern California, is a women’s school which is part of the Claremont College consortium, a coalition of five undergraduate colleges. Students in any of the colleges in the consortium are able to use resources and take classes at the other partic-

ipating schools. The idea of attending an all-female college did not appeal to Venkatesh immediately, but after visiting the campus and learning about the programs offered, she knew the university would be a good fit for her. Said Venkatesh, “It’s really empowering to be with women.” Venkatesh has received support from her peers and family. She looks forward to meeting new people and engaging in her studies as a human biology major. “I hope to use my knowledge to help improve the lives of underprivileged people,” Venkatesh said.

IRENE POGGIOLINI // ITALY MELISSA SILVA editor-in-chief

Outgoing senior Irene Poggiolini will be returning to her home country of Italy after graduating from Cupertino High School. Poggiolini came to Cupertino last July as an Italian exchange student and has spent the past year living with a host family. “I really wanted the experience of going somewhere else, both to see how thea different education system works and to experience the American lifestyle, and also because I knew I had this opportunity now and that it might not appear again,” Poggiolini said. One of the main differences Poggiolini has noted between the two countries’ education systems is that while students move to different classrooms here, in Italy it is the teachers who move from class to class. Poggiolini has enjoyed seeing the variety of clubs and extracurricular activities offered at the school. She has also enjoyed meeting new people. “The thing I like the most about coming [to the U.S.] and to this school in particular is that I learned so much more than just the American culture. I have many friends who are foreign, too, so I learned [about their cultures as well],” Poggiolini observed.

MELISSA SILVA

Poggiolini will be returning to her home country because Italy has 13 years of school, with high school being five years long. Poggiolini intends on studying medicine. By returning to Italy and completing her education there, Poggiolini will have diplomas both from CHS and her high school in Italy, thus opening up options for her to continue her studies in the U.S. or Europe. Although Poggiolini plans on remaining in Italy to continue her studies, she is intent on visiting the U.S. in the future. Said Poggiolini, “This experience has allowed me to have a lot of friends here, and also a second family with my host family.”

Looking back on my time at CHS, naming just one standout memory is impossible. However, what surprises me is how varied these memories have been. I remember watching miles of cacti and mountains pass by during an eight hour drive to southern California for a cross country meet and conversing with teammates who largely abandoned sleep. I remember warming up backstage with Comedy Hour before a big performance, trying to stifle our laughter in total darkness while we waited for the current act to finish. I remember early mornings in the gym the day of a rally, intending to practice lines but mostly just playing with the microphones. I remember late night arguments in the hotel room at the Orlando journalism convention, staying up almost all night talking only to drag ourselves out of bed the next morning to catch the first round of classes. Cupertino offered me the chance to pursue a complete mess of passions and interests, but that mess is what my best memories are made of.

anshul High school is one of the largest periods of change, for good or bad. Over my four years I have learned two main lessons. Number one, the system is concrete and generally absolute. Number two, never stop fighting the system. If you try to go against the status quo it most likely will be a losing and frustrating battle, one that makes you want to stop and become just like everyone else. I have had those times where I seriously thought about where my efforts got me and I still think about the consequences of those actions. But,

aishwarya As a kid, I was always in a rush to grow up. I couldn’t wait to hit those numeric milestones: 13, 16, 18, and 21. But I suppose somewhere along the way I realized growing up wasn’t about my age or even the inches I gained on my spine. My first halfmarathon, my first trip alone, my first job, the first time I got my eyebrows waxed — these were my rites of passage of growing up. So, I leave behind this as my advice: don’t waste your time on thinking about the what-if’s and could-be’s. We see our future and

past through a rose colored lens of age and desire; we glorify the best and the worst, but life happens right in between. For a while it may seem like that everything you do in high school has to be working towards some obscure end goal but you have to realize that reaching that “goal” is insignificant if the work and the little things that you experience along the way aren’t recognized and appreciated. Growing up is a part of life — you can’t speed through it or slow it down, but what you can do is appreciate it.

erin I laugh (and cringe) looking back at freshman me. I foolishly thought that puberty would turn me smoking hot (it didn’t — I just became a slightly larger version of my middle school self), that sleep deprivation was a valid status symbol, and that these four years would determine the remaining 80% of my life. I wish that I could impart some useful words of wisdom for you all, but I don’t think it’s in my position to tell you what to do with your lives. But like all old people, I’ll share boatloads of advice that no one wanted or asked for. I’ll make this short since I’m running out of space in my little box. Passion comes as a result of action, not vice versa. Don’t sit around waiting for your purpose to come to you — Neil Armstrong didn’t change history solely from dreaming about the moon. Most importantly, don’t be afraid of change. Life will inevitably have its painful moments, but it’s those experiences that teach you the most. Everything will be okay, trust me :) I wish you all the best <3 Erin

in the end one can only grow in their development if they challenge themselves. Every battle I fought, every article I wrote, every speech/rant I gave helped me develop as a person. It made me a stronger leader and a person who is respected in the adult world. High school absolutely has the potential to tear you down, and it will try if you try to change things. The important thing to remember is that resistance is never futile. When you write and crystalize your grievances people will listen. That is one of the beauties of journalism.

elena I still remember walking into my first class, Japanese 3, nervous, a class filled with upperclassmen. Little did I know what would follow from just taking Japanese. Before high school, I disliked Japanese and was unsure of my decision to take the class. But to my surprise I found a place where I felt acceptance and joy, a place that could always lift my spirits. Within a couple months I had my first leadership position for the bunkasai, an event the Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS) hosted, then sophomore year having a half-officer position and then two years as social manager for JNHS. It’s weird to think how a club with just 100 people could impact me so deeply and influence and create who I am today. I met so many different, kind, and hilarious people in the club whom I enjoyed talking with and helping to connect with other club members. I found a group of people I know I would always enjoy talking to, a side of me that was able to become a leader that was more outgoing, and realized a passion for a part of my culture. Just from one class I was able to make four years of memories that have impacted who I am today.

sudarshan The other day, I was catching up with a friend who hadn’t seen me in some time, and he remarked, “Wow, you look like such a senior. When I last saw you over the summer, you looked like such a freshman.” Confused and mildly bemused by this remark, I asked him what he meant by that, but while he began explaining, I zoned out and started thinking about myself over the last four years of high school. Looking back, I don’t think I can possibly associate

freshman year me with senior year me. From the shy, unconfident, and socially inept freshman to to the gregarious, reasonably confident, and still slightly socially inept senior I am today, I guess it’s fair to say I have changed quite a bit. If I were to drop some serious life advice or some stuff along that line, I’d recommend that you always plan, but definitely plan to take things in your stride. Seriously, it makes life a hell of a lot more fun and less stressful.

josephine High school is like a big lost and found. I’ve lost a lot in these four years, friends, hope, and even parts of myself. However, when you lose something you inevitably replace it. No matter how hard it seems, or how long it takes, whatever you lost will be replaced. Finding something new isn’t a bad thing. It just means what you had before wasn’t working for you. When I was a freshman I wanted to find happiness. Eventually, you come to realize that life isn’t about compromises and that you don’t have to be unhappy. Happiness isn’t something that will come to you when the pieces of your life magically fall together. It’s something you have to work for. Happiness is absolutely worth working for. As a freshman I didn’t think it was. I thought there were more important things. But I was wrong. When you put other things in front of your happiness you’re essentially putting yourself in second place, which is something you have to learn not to do. Always remember to take care of yourself because you’re not living life for anyone else but yourself.

meilinda When I was a freshman, I was riding on the tail end of an Abercrombie polo obsession. Then came the Zumba phase, the chicken nuggets phase, and the vegetarian tofu rice bowl phase. If I’ve learned anything throughout my four years here, it’s that I should shamelessly be myself — cringeworthy obsessions and all. I learned this during my time at The Prospector. As a self-conscious sophomore, journalism was the first time that I publicly shared my writing. Especially when writing controversial opinions articles, I was worried that I would be judged for the beliefs I maintained and often hesitated to unapologetically convey my thoughts. Regardless of whether my fellow staffers agreed with the pieces I wrote, they never failed to treat me with respect. When I first became a staffer on The Prospector three years ago, I didn’t know just how large an impact the newspaper would have on me. From being on staff, I learned the valuable lesson of acceptance.

n middle school, I had a very clear idea of my high school years would be like. Thanknothing went as planned. With the help of ers, teachers, and family, I’ve learned how pt throughout high school to all the unexchallenges thrown at me and how to turn nts of distress into some of the most conve experiences I’ve had. Pushing myself out comfort zone to participate in activities like lism, cross country, and track and field has d me the opportunity to meet people and hings I never would have if I had stuck to my al plan. I want to thank everyone who chalme, supported me, and stuck by my side past four years. To all those who have yet to ete their high school journeys, I offer you the dvice I have been trying to give myself as I e for college: be comfortable being uncome.
