Director, Business Services | February 2019

Introduction from the Director of Kew Foundation Thank you for your interest in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and this important role of Director, Business Services within the Foundation. This is a fantastic time to be joining us as we enter the early stages of planning Kew’s next ambitious international fundraising campaign. The previous campaign, which concluded in 2015, raised just over £100m for Kew. As you will see from the information in this pack and our website, Kew is of global importance as a resource for plant and fungal knowledge, as all our lives depend on plants and fungi. Kew is London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage site offering unique landscapes and iconic architecture from every stage of the Gardens’ history. Our collection of living plants is the largest and most diverse in the world, growing out in the Gardens and inside our glasshouses. With the integration of the Kew Foundation into the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in July 2017 we have gone through a period of growth and change, with exciting plans for future enhanced collaboration and efficiency to continue the vital work we do. Kew has a long tradition of raising substantial sums through fundraising and membership, and this role will play an important part in ensuring that we are at the forefront of world-class practice and continue to finance critical scientific and horticultural work both in the UK and overseas. As we plan to enter the initial planning stages of a significant campaign, this role will play a vital role as we look to drive change and improvement across the Foundation. You will be working with a dynamic and ambitious team, and you will be fully supported by myself and your highly committed peers on the senior management team. I hope this opportunity excites you as much as it does us and that you will consider joining us for this next stage of growth. Meredith Pierce Hunter Director of Kew Foundation

Who We Are Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (RBG Kew) RBG Kew is already a world-famous centre for botanical and mycological knowledge. Our two inspiring gardens enchant our visitors with the wonder of the world’s plant diversity, and we reach beyond our garden walls to excite and educate individuals and communities. RBG Kew’s mission is to be the global resource for plant and fungal knowledge, building an understanding of the world’s plants and fungi upon which all our lives depend. We use the power of our science and the rich diversity of our gardens and collections to provide knowledge, inspiration and understanding of why plants and fungi matter to everyone. Loss of biodiversity, climate change, rapidly-spreading pests and diseases, human population growth and the associated challenges of food security are causing unprecedented stress on human societies around the world. Plants and fungi hold the key to help solve these challenges through the fundamental life-giving processes they drive, the properties they contain, and the materials and food they provide. Through increasing understanding of why plants and fungi matter, we can unlock their potential. This is an urgent task. We face unprecedented losses of biodiversity and rapid environmental change, and risk losing the precious secrets that plants and fungi can give us before we discover them.

Wakehurst, our wild botanic garden on the High Weald of West Sussex, has over 500 acres of beautiful ornamental gardens, woodlands and a nature reserve. Wakehurst is also home to the Millennium Seed Bank, the largest wild seed conservation project in the world. This is an exciting time in Kew’s history. We are stewards of this organisation and the accumulated knowledge of our collections, data and people. Our patron is the HRH Prince of Wales who said: ‘I have always had the greatest affection and admiration for the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, so I could not be more proud and delighted to have been invited to become Patron of this great institution. Kew has had its roots planted deeply in British soil for more than 250 years, but has developed an international reputation as one of the world’s greatest botanic gardens, renowned for its scientific research and plant collections.’ Kew receives approximately half of its income from central government (DEFRA), but is also reliant on income from other sources. Without the voluntary monies raised through membership, donations and grants, Kew would have to significantly scale back activities at a time when, as environmental challenges become ever more acute, its resources and expertise are needed in the world more than ever.

RBG Kew Vision Unlocking Why Plants and Fungi Matter is our vision for how a better understanding of plants and fungi will contribute to solving some of the most critical challenges facing humanity today. RBG Kew’s work ultimately benefits every human being on the planet today and in the future. We have a profound responsibility, and that is reflected in our ambitious strategy as it builds on the purpose and work of RBG Kew through its history. By delivering our 2020/2021 strategy successfully, our organisation will be stronger, will reach and inspire more people, and contribute to solutions to our planet’s most serious contemporary challenges.

Kew Foundation Kew Foundation is the charitable arm of RBG Kew, responsible for raising funds through legacies, major gifts, corporate support, trusts and foundation, and individual giving. The Foundation also oversees the membership scheme at RBG Kew.

Kew Foundation is one of eight Directorates which collectively will ensure that RBG Kew achieves its strategic objectives to: • Deliver the Science Strategy and curate our collections. • Maximise the potential of the Gardens. • Grow commercial income. • Create outstanding learning and outreach opportunities. • Engage the public and stakeholders in Kew’s importance and impact. • Grow philanthropic and membership income. • Achieve success through our people. • Improve our infrastructure. Our vision is to be recognised as a world class example of fundraising and membership best practice in the arts, culture, science and heritage sector. Kew Foundation has 60 staff organised into 4 departments: • Development (fundraising teams for major gifts, trusts, corporates and individual giving). • Membership (delivering the membership schemes for both Kew and Wakehurst).

Director, Business Services | February 2019

• Engagement (accountable for delivery of events and responsible for marketing, content and stewardship across membership and fundraising). • Business Services (providing research support, data, management information and systems support). We bring in nearly a third of the income required to support the ambition of RBG Kew. Our activities ensure that everything we do, from income received, to events, to donor and member communications, supports RBG, Kew’s mission to be the global resource for plant and fungal knowledge, and that the people we have working on these activities are a professional, high-performing team. The Kew Foundation raises over £20 million a year from philanthropy, sponsorship, membership and legacies. The membership scheme contributed over £5.5 million to Kew’s income in 2018 from membership subscriptions and Gift Aid alone. Membership goes from strength to strength with approximately 100,000 members across both Kew and Wakehurst, and our ambition is to deepen this relationship with members, not only by delivering an exceptional visitor experience, but by reinforcing the key message of the importance of membership support.

Campaign We are currently in the planning stages of a major international fundraising campaign, which we anticipate will enter its silent phase in late 2020 with a view to launching to the public in 2023. A campaign feasibility study was conducted in the summer of 2018 and around £250m of need has been identified across RBG Kew including capital requirements, education, and scientific research and investment.

The Foundation is spending the next 18-24 months getting the Foundation and Kew “campaign-ready”, strengthening the donor pipeline, and rejuvenating the Foundation Council, which is a group of senior-level volunteers who will support the fundraising and membership activities throughout the duration of the campaign. The Director, Business Services role will have responsibility for hiring a Campaign Manager who will help plan, manage, and deliver this ambitious campaign, alongside Kew Foundation colleagues.
