WELCOME

Thank you for your interest in joining the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the newly-created role of Head of Philanthropy. The CBSO is a very special organisation, loved locally and admired worldwide as one of the world’s foremost orchestras. We take our vision – ‘every life enriched by music’ – seriously, and the orchestra is renowned not only for its world-class artistic excellence but also for the impact of its work in schools and communities across the region. The orchestra celebrates its centenary in 2020. We’ve been on a roll since superstar conductor Mirga GražinytėTyla joined us as Music Director in 2016, and under her leadership our ambitions for our second century are significant. We’ll be touring the world, with keynote performances planned in the top venues of North America, Europe and Asia; we’ll be making recordings on the blue-chip classical label Deutsche Grammophon; and our contribution to the local community will be bigger than ever following the creation of the Shireland CBSO School in Sandwell – a brand new state secondary school, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, which will teach a full curriculum with outstanding music provision curated by the CBSO at its heart.

Head of Philanthropy

Since 2010 we have significantly reduced our reliance on funding from local and national government, growing philanthropic income from around £450,000 to £1.7 million per year while also raising a £2.5 million endowment. Building on this success we are currently in the quiet phase of a major fundraising campaign, which will make our ambitions for the orchestra’s second century possible. We are creating this senior position as a key element of our campaign strategy following advice from More Partnership. In joining us you would become part of a successful and ambitious fundraising team which enjoys active support from the board and its chairman David Burbidge, as well as from Mirga, other senior volunteers, the management team and our orchestral musicians. The creation of this senior position is an important strategic decision for the CBSO, and we are both committed to working closely and supportively with the successful candidate. We very much hope you will take the time to apply. Stephen Maddock OBE Simon Fairclough Chief Executive Director of Development

INTRODUCING THE CBSO

As it begins its centenary celebrations the CBSO is widely recognised as ‘one of the best orchestras in Europe’ (The Economist, 2016). Every year it performs for over 200,000 concertgoers, provides 70,000 opportunities for people of all ages to engage with music beyond the concert hall through its Learning & Engagement programme, nurtures the talents of 750 local residents aged 7–80+ with its four choirs and its youth and training orchestras, and reaches a global audience through tours, broadcasts and recordings. The CBSO has always been an innovator. It was the first major British orchestra to present young people’s concerts as early as 1921; and more recently, under the visionary leadership of Sir Simon Rattle, it redefined the role which British symphony orchestras play in their communities by being the first in the country to build a world-leading modern concert hall, to establish an education department and to build a small-scale venue as a hub for its education and community activities. Rattle’s successors Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons built on his success before going on to some of the biggest conducting roles in classical music. Most recently, in 2016, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla’s appointment as Music Director aged just 29 generated excitement

across the musical world and helped to shatter the glass ceiling which previously held female conductors back. Earlier this year, plans to open the Shireland CBSO School – the first of its kind in the world – were approved by government. The scope of the CBSO’s work is unusually broad. Its concert programme in the Midlands has at its heart a world-leading classical series, but also includes at least 30 performances a year for young audiences, a series of popular music concerts, a chamber music programme, and new music. The same musicians who perform on the world’s most prestigious concert stages also lead delivery of its Learning & Engagement programme, which encompasses work in dozens of local schools, musical activities for young people with disabilities, a major programme for gifted and talented young musicians, partnerships with three universities, and a growing strand of activity for older people living with dementia. Beyond the region, CBSO performances are eagerly sought-after at the world’s most prestigious concert halls: over the 2019-20 and 2020-21 concert seasons the orchestra will give almost 70 international performances on three continents.

OUR AMBITION

For a decade we have been investing in the growth of our development function – and since 2010 we have increased philanthropic income from around £450,000 to £1.7 million per year while also raising a £2.5 million endowment. Much of this growth has resulted from philanthropic support from major donors making five- and six-figure gifts. The trustees and management team are committed to continuing to invest in the orchestra’s development capacity in line with increasing targets. Over the last year we have worked with More Partnership on a detailed feasibility study for a £10m+ campaign which will make our plans for the orchestra’s second century possible. We are creating the new Head of Philanthropy role as a result of this study to capitalise on further potential which we have identified in the major gifts area. Working closely with the Director of Development, the Head of Philanthropy will play a key role in further developing the CBSO’s major gift fundraising function and culture, building on the existing solid foundation.
