Mercy Ships UK
Introduction From Joanne Balaam, CEO Hello! Thank you so much for your interest in the role of Director of Development at Mercy Ships. I have worked at Mercy Ships since 2016 and took up the role of CEO in 2020 and I love what we do. It’s a tremendous privilege to work in a significant organisation in world mission and social action. Our ships take medical expertise and supplies to help eradicate the diseases of poverty and deprivation, giving others life and wellness instead of death and debilitation. It’s so wonderful to see the changes in people’s lives, both adult and children, and to witness how love changes things. Our goal is not only to have a transformational impact on individual lives through the healthcare we provide but also to see a lasting impact on the societies and communities that have been involved. Sharing our skills and knowledge with local medical experts enables them to contribute directly to the improvement of healthcare delivery in their country long after we have left. This year we have adapted our teams and training to help manage the COVID-19 crisis in Africa where we have been working in partnership for 30 years. Being awarded our first ever UK Aid matched grant we’ve been able to return to our work in Senegal and: provide surgery and dental procedures to improve the health outcomes for patients otherwise unable to access this care; build the medical capacities of healthcare professionals in Senegal through our dedicated training courses; and undertake a research project for sustained improvements in surgical care systems. We’ve made a huge difference already but we want to do more to help all those who still don’t have regular access to healthcare or surgery.
Here in the UK we are a committed team of 24+ people working in a variety of hybrid ways during this tricky time. We have high standards for working together (see our values and behaviours on page 7) and love to challenge one another to do better. We love to learn new and improved ways of working and will shortly be embarking on some organisation development to bring many of our ideas for the future together, which we are really excited about. We want to strengthen our in-house team and are looking for someone who shares our vision, passion and commitment, to take on the role of Director of Development. This is a role for someone who is energised and motivated by our vision, who has great interpersonal skills and can build on the fabulous work that has been done to date. If this tremendous opportunity interests you, and if you believe you have the skills and passion to succeed in this role, then we would love to hear from you. Details of how to apply are given at the end of this pack. If there’s anything that’s unclear or you have any specific questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact our recruitment partner at Prospectus for an informal chat. I am really looking forward to hearing from you. Joanne Balaam Chief Executive Officer

History Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 55 countries, providing services valued at more than £1.3 billion. By improving healthcare delivery in every country visited, Mercy Ships is working to eradicate the diseases of poverty and effectively do itself out of a job. Mercy Ships follows the model of Jesus by “bringing hope and healing to the forgotten poor”, helping people of any faith or none. Among the countries Mercy Ships serves, which lie on the lower third of the World Health Organisation’s Human Development Index, access to safe, affordable and timely surgery is extremely limited. As a result, countless people suffer and die from “diseases of poverty” that can easily be cured. Mercy Ships delivers a customised five-year partnership model with every country it is invited to support. Relationships are built with the national government and ministry of health, so that the specific needs of each country are met. In this way, Mercy Ships doesn’t just address the immediate need on the ground, but also works to strengthen the country’s healthcare systems and drive policy change. The aim is to tackle the root causes of the problems rather than just the consequences. Mercy Ships UK (a key member of the Mercy Ships global partnership) was founded in 1996. We currently have one ship (The Africa Mercy) active and in service with another (The Global Mercy) being equipped and prepared. Our crew is led by a team of volunteers from up to 40 nations, all of whom give their time and expertise for free. Mercy Ships doesn’t just take doctors and nurses - the ship is a small city, with cooks, teachers, receptionists, mechanics, IT specialists, engineers and cleaners. There are around 400 volunteers on our hospital ships at any one time, and around 1,000 serve onboard throughout the year.

Our Work
Mariama’s Story Mariama is a lively and healthy baby, but a severe facial cleft strained her joyful smile. This facial cleft affected 7-month-old Mariama’s lip and nose, making it difficult for her to eat and causing her parents to worry about their child’s future. Since paediatric services capable of treating baby Mariama’s condition were not available near the family, local doctors directed her father to Senegal’s capital city in hopes of finding help. It was there that he heard about a hospital ship capable of providing healing for his little girl. Soon after, Mariama received an operation onboard the Africa Mercy that corrected her cleft lip. After surgery, Mariama and her family stayed at the HOPE Center, where her mother learned how to make nutritional baby formula and learned about the importance of nutrition for her child. Now, Mariama is home with her family, happy and healthy!

Behaviours
We put beneficiaries first
We are open to challenge
Our performance impacts lives, so we strive for the very best results.
We challenge current norms, ideate, create and develop. We seek out fresh perspectives and embrace innovation. We’re constantly looking for the best ideas, not necessarily our own. We are constructive in our feedback in order to get the best solutions for those we serve. We are bold in what we strive for, we are not afraid to fail, but are thankful for opportunities to develop. We are proactive around growth; ours, and the ministry. We nurture a culture of learning, where we are eager to learn from anywhere, anyone and anything!
We continually seek to add value in our roles, and dedicate ourselves to creating a preferred future. Excellence, not average, is our aim. We keep processes simple and communicate proactively in order to work most effectively. We always work with focus on our goal. We choose to be wise stewards with our resources; with our time, energy, expertise and finances. All of our decisions are prefaced with: “Is this the right call for the people we serve?”
We expect the best
Together in everything
We consistently seek the best in and for others. We seek to understand other perspectives with empathy, and we trust each other fully. We look for ways to lift each other up. We are ‘for one another’ both when we are together and when we are apart. We are generous with our time, we are gracious to others, speaking words of encouragement, patience and kindness.
We are a relationally-driven team. We connect in a meaningful and authentic way that builds trust. Our instinct is to bring others into discussions early on. We appreciate the value of conversation, and communicate openly, effectively and proactively. We include others so that we create and deliver together. We rely on and celebrate each other’s strengths and gifts to get the job done, knowing that we are secure in our own identity. We function as a ‘body’ and as a result, we all get closer, grow stronger and achieve together.
