“My future was already determined - to be a gang member on the streets I grew up on and then Tom from RugbyWorks showed me there was a different path.” 2

Chief Executive Officer | RugbyWorks

Welcome Dear Prospective Candidate If the statement opposite from one of our young people engages you, please read on. I am so proud to be the chair of an organisation that goes to parts of our society that many people would put in the “too difficult category”. Not only do we go there but we are truly changing and saving lives. We create meaningful and real change in a young person’s life by providing an ongoing commitment to them. Despite having doubled in size 2 years in a row through the hard work of the entire RugbyWorks team, our job and raison d’etre has only just begun - we have built the opportunity we could only have dreamed of 10 years ago. We are determined to deliver this. To achieve this, our next CEO will be challenged to take themselves and us to places others may not think possible. I would love to work with you to achieve those ambitions and make our society a fairer and better place to live. Can you answer yes to the following questions? If so, you could be the next CEO of RugbyWorks. • Do you passionately care about enabling the most disadvantaged young people to fulfil their potential? • Do you want to right the wrong that 2 in 3 of the adult prison population started on that path by being removed from mainstream education at the age of 14? • Are you a CEO or aspiring CEO who wants to challenge yourself in a highly professional environment? • Do you have the interpersonal skills to motivate a 14 year old disengaged young person in an inner city environment in the morning and then to persuade a billionaire to support our cause from their own pocket in the afternoon? • Are you capable of taking a ten year old organisation that has only scratched the surface of its potential to places few would think possible? MATTHEW KEY - CHAIR

A word from our Founder and (still very active) Trustee After a privileged playing career and a somewhat troubled youth I am passionate about righting some of the wrongs of our society and enabling some of our hardest to reach young people to achieve. To change the trajectory of over 1000 young people’s lives who have found themselves outside mainstream education, often through no fault of their own, is one the most rewarding things I have achieved during my life. I would love you to join our journey and take us to the next level. Thank you for reading our brief, we really hope it triggers your interest. LAWRENCE DALLAGLIO OBE

Landscape EACH YEAR ON AVERAGE 2,720 YOUNG PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14-16 ARE EXCLUDED FROM MAINSTREAM EDUCATION IN THE UK. THAT’S 14 EXCLUSIONS EVERY SCHOOL DAY. Excluded children are the most vulnerable; twice as likely to be in the care of the state, four times more likely to have grown up in poverty, seven times more likely to have a special educational need and ten times more likely to suffer recognised mental health problems. Most have no hope of getting out of a system they fell into, often through no fault of their own. They will go on to cost the state £763m in extra health, criminal justice, welfare and education costs in their lifetime. 63% of the prison population were excluded from school at some stage in their lives. At Dallaglio RugbyWorks, we want to change this. Founder, Lawrence Dallaglio OBE, former England Rugby and Wasps Captain experienced a troubled time in his youth after the death of his sister, and credits finding rugby for helping him overcome a very turbulent time in his life. Lawrence recognised the power that rugby had in transforming his attitude, behaviour and aspirations and channelled that power into the development of RugbyWorks.

Chief Executive Officer | RugbyWorks

OUR VISION We believe that all young people have a right to a good education and a secure and happy future. At Dallaglio RugbyWorks we use the values of Rugby to work at the extreme end of the UK’s education system helping young people who have severe behavioural challenges to overcome them, developing bespoke paths for each young person to equip them to get a job, build a career and secure a long term stable future. Our coaches use sport to help foster teamwork, discipline and respect, and they continue with each young person in to the classroom helping them to develop their communication and written skills, preparing them for the world of further education or work. The bond between our coaches and the young people in the programme go far beyond the rugby pitch as they become constant, trusted pillars of support at one of the most difficult periods of transition for vulnerable young people. Currently we work in under 10% of the UKs target Alternative Provision teenage population and we are keen to continue our growth curve (average 20% per annum over the last three years) to reach as many young people in need as possible. To ensure sustainability and growth our target is to diversify our income streams and consolidate our operating model so we can roll out to further regions quickly as our revenue grows.

RugbyWorks Programme RugbyWorks coaches currently operate nationally in over 80 Alternative Provision Schools (AP) and have over 560 young people working with us. Each pair of RugbyWorks coaches leads small groups of 8-10 young people, establishing the trust and support that’s vital to their mentorship. We commit to a free weekly session, across 30 weeks per year for a full two years Year’s 10 and 11 - building longer-term relationships.

We use rugby as a hook, but the sessions help develop their soft skills, increasing their engagement with the school, developing their communication, discipline and guiding them onto a suitable career path. We also ensure that all RugbyWorks participants are exposed to essential workplace experience - employability taster days, workshops and placements - that lets them aspire to positive, productive futures. These include partnerships with Halfords, Bidfood, McGee, Burberry, Premier Group amongst others. Our third year of the programme switches to a mentoring one-to-one basis, as we support their difficult, enforced transition out of Alternative Provision and back into the mainstream college. By continuing our relationship, we help at-risk youngsters sustain further education, employment or traineeship for the longer-term. Our young people’s three stage journey focuses on the following areas: YEAR 1 - ‘ENGAGEMENT’ Minimising the impact of their past

EAST MIDLANDS

SOUTH WEST

YEAR 2 - ‘INTEGRATION’ Making better decisions in the present, and YEAR 3 - ‘ACHIEVEMENT’ Planning to ensure a long term successful future “The primary challenge for so many of the children in Alternative Provision is to give them the confidence to take up the offers of work or education and, critically, to stick with it for the long haul. It is here that Dallaglio RugbyWorks is able to make such a difference, giving young people the support they need to develop the self-belief, the determination and the resilience to go on to become successful adults.” Charlie Taylor, Chairman of the Youth Justice Board & Trustee of Dallaglio RugbyWorks Click here to learn more about what we do.

Our Impact These are some of the hardest young people to reach, but our programme is working. Over a period of 3 years we work with each young person to get them in to employment or further education and the results have been encouraging. Our young people are twice as likely to still be in education, employment or training 12 months after leaving school. Both significant predictors of future employability and ability to support themselves and their families to build a better life.

Our partnership with Impetus - PEF, the leading strategic and transformational youth charity, and their commitment of expertise, strategic direction and funding help us to develop our programmes, maximise our impact and fulfil our potential to help young people in a profound and long lasting way. We are proud of their recognition of the quality of our programmes. We’re recruiting over a dozen new coaches, bolstering our fundraising capability and, most encouragingly of all, welcoming the first young person to ‘graduate’ from RugbyWorks participant to full-time programme coach.
