Welcome
The Barbican is one of the world’s leading arts and education organisations, welcoming 2m+ visitors, thousands of school children and hundreds of artists every year. We are both a civic space for our communities and a multiplatform venue that showcases the best artists, musicians, directors and actors to global audiences.
From its iconic site in the heart of the City of London, the Barbican inspires one of the UK’s most dynamic cultural communities through its rich artistic programme and extensive engagement with communities across London and beyond.
It could not be a more important time to join us: the Barbican is going through an exciting period of change as a result of its new leadership, with Claire Spencer as the first ever CEO and Will Gompertz as Artistic Director. We also have ambitious capital plans to renew our site, which will create spaces that will enable new ways of interacting with art forms, as well as delivering a sustainable, inclusive and accessible Barbican Centre for future generations to enjoy.
As a senior member of the Development department, you will be working with our small but committed team to help guide and support the Barbican Centre through this unique period of growth and change. You will be comfortable applying your strategic skills, knowledge of the corporate sector and your networks to grow and generate new income. As an ambassador for the Centre, you will be dynamic, visionary and totally committed to diversifying and growing our pool of corporate supporters.
We have ambitious plans and are looking for a smart, passionate and successful corporate fundraiser to help us realise that vision. I hope you will be as excited by the challenge as we are, and that you will consider having a conversation with us to find out more about this unique opportunity.

About the Barbican
An internationally renowned and locally-focused Centre for arts and learning.
‘As an international arts and learning centre, the Barbican seeks to present and provide memorable artistic experiences across music, theatre, dance, visual arts and cinema that entertain, enable, enrich and educate our many audiences and participants. Over the next decade, we are working to deliver an ambitious transformation strategy through which we will become a more inclusive, diverse, and enterprising arts centre, rooted in our local communities while reaching out to the world.
Our famous Grade II* listed building will be revitalised, refurbished and rethought through a major capital project, which will provide the facilities and resources needed to bring to life a new Creative Vision. Our organisation’s transformation will reposition the Barbican as a home for bold, boundary-pushing ideas that resonate across our audiences and the globe.
Central to our new Creative Vision will be working and learning in partnership with our artistic associates, neighbours, community organisations and the wider industry in order to develop brave, inclusive, sustainable projects and networks that grow communities and diversify audiences. We are currently developing new partnerships and products that will see the Barbican become not only an international centre for the arts, but also a recognised centre for creative education and cultural enterprise.
Every year, millions of people come together at the Barbican to enjoy the unique shared experience that only the arts can offer: from a Ballet Black premiere in our theatre to an London Symphony Orchestra performance in our concert hall; and from a sold-out Jean Michel Basquiat exhibition in our gallery, to a season of rarely seen Indian arthouse films in our cinemas. We have dedicated programmes for schools, families and communities – all of which are designed to broaden access and provide opportunities for everybody to explore their creativity.

The City of London Corporation
The City of London Corporation is the founder and principal funder of the Barbican Centre; the Barbican operates as a department of the City Corporation. The principal governing body of the Corporation is the Court of Common Council, whose Members are elected by the residents and businesses of the City. The Barbican Centre Board is the governing body of the Barbican Centre, working within the framework of the Corporation’s committee structure, responsible for setting the strategy and scrutinising the performance of the Centre and its activities.
The Barbican Centre Trust
A fundamental tenet of the Barbican Centre’s philosophy is that we want to offer the widest possible access to culture, giving everyone the opportunity to encounter and enjoy creativity.
We’re not-for-profit. To keep our programme accessible to everyone, and to invest in the artists we work with, we need to raise more than 65% of our income through ticket sales, commercial activities and fundraising every year. The Barbican Centre Trust is the Barbican Centre’s charitable and fundraising arm, and we work to cultivate and grow our community of major supporters, corporate sponsors, and grant makers. Their donations and other funding enable us to continue investing in our arts and learning programme. You can read more about the Trust here.
The Barbican Centre Trust and its Trustees have separate responsibilities to the Barbican Centre Board, which is
responsible for the oversight of the Barbican Centre as a department of the City of London Corporation. However, the Chair of the Centre Board and the Chair of the Trust Board have ex-officio seats on both bodies, and there is an excellent and productive dialogue between them. Led by the Chair, Farmida Bi, and Vice-Chair, Robert Glick, our Trustees lead the way in making introductions and strengthening connections with individuals, corporates and trusts who can help us achieve ambitious fundraising targets. Trustees use their networks and expertise to help us unlock transformative opportunities, securing crucial income for the Centre’s work.
Our key income streams are: Corporate, Individual Giving, and Grants and Trusts.

Values
Barbican Futures
We are investing in the future of our people and our communities, through a radical programme for change, called Barbican Futures. This programme will bring together three parallel strands of activity, all of which have organisational transformation at their heart. Barbican Renewal will see a reimagining of our physical buildings, our dynamic Equity, Diversity & Inclusion programme will deliver lasting cultural change, and our Creative Vision will lead to a more inclusive, equitable and all-encompassing artistic programme for the centre going forward.
Equity, diversity and inclusion
We’re committed to becoming an anti-racist organisation, which will not tolerate discrimination, bullying or prejudice. It’s important that each and every person who works at the Barbican feels safe, valued, and respected. If we’re alerted to any offensive, threatening, or intimidating behaviour –by either a colleague, audience member, or collaborator – we’ll be quick and firm in addressing the issue. The Barbican is a place where everyone should feel they belong, a place where fairness and equity of opportunity exists; where creativity is encouraged, enterprise is supported, education is readily available, and artists can achieve their most ambitious projects. More information can be found online here.
Purpose
We are London’s CREATIVE CATALYST – for arts, curiosity, and enterprise
We spark creative possibilities and transformation for artists, audiences, and communities – to inspire, connect and provoke debate.
We are the place to be in this Destination City, where everyone is welcome. Our impact is felt far outside our walls and ripples beyond the experiences we offer; locally, nationally, and internationally.
