We’ve developed an efficient, innovative, and scalable model to empower communities of students, health workers, and entrepreneurs in rural regions with life-changing mobility. Currently, we are in Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and Malawi. As a non-profit, we work with our for-profit subsidiary social enterprise (Buffalo Bicycles) to establish and manage a sustainable transportation ecosystem through the power of the bicycles.

As we continue to build and strengthen our work, we are seeking passionate, dedicated, and committed individuals to add depth of expertise and judgement to our US Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for providing oversight of World Bicycle Reliefs’ charitable purposes and mission. Board Directors oversee and guide the organization’s executive leadership in defining and steering the mission, governance, and strategy of the charity.

Given the breadth and diversity of our work globally, we are particularly encouraging candidates who can help us better reflect and represent the diverse range of people and cultures we serve.

Throughout World Bicycle Relief’s 15 years of operation, we have measured a 19% reduction in girl school dropouts, 88% increase in community health workers’ patient reach and 25% increase in dairy farmer incomes. To date, we’ve distributed over 640,000 Buffalo Bicycles, benefiting over three million people. Our goal is to distribute a cumulative total of 1M Buffalo Bicycles, positively impacting 5 million people, by 2025.

ABOUT WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF

The social enterprise for-profit, Buffalo Bicycle, has developed a stronger, simpler, and sustainable bicycle that can withstand harsh rural conditions and are sold in shops in the countries where we implement our programming. The bicycle was designed through collaboration with communities and cycling industry leaders.

MISSION AND VISION

World Bicycle Relief is an innovative, philanthropic non-profit that works in tandem with our for-profit subsidiary social enterprise (Buffalo Bicycle) to establish and manage a sustainable transportation ecosystem through the power of the bicycles. World Bicycle Relief’s holistic rural community programming is funded through generous global supporters and complemented by sales of Buffalo Bicycles and spare parts.

Our long-term vision is to inspire all sectors to address the transportation needs for nearly 1 billion who need to get to school, work or healthcare. We will work with companies, governments, collaborators, and competitors to scale the availability of quality bicycles, especially for women and girls.

Currently in five countries, World Bicycle Relief programming prioritizes empowering women and girls, students, entrepreneurs and community health caregivers. We strive for economic development through job creation (trained mechanics), increased access to education, livelihoods (delivery of fresh produce and products to local markets), and quicker access to healthcare - all while promoting community cohesion and positive environmental impact.

Bicycles help children get to school and stay in school. On two wheels, students in low-income regions can lift themselves and their families out of poverty. In rural communities around the world, the biggest barrier to education is often getting to school – especially for girls. Our communitybased programming provides bicycles to students in need, prioritizing girls in particular. Access to reliable transportation mobilizes girl students to access schools and clinics, support their communities, and realize dreams. World Bicycle Relief is funded through a combination of donations and earned income from our social enterprise program. 80% of funding supports our programs. Expenses include bike purchases, shipping, assembly and distribution as well as mechanics training, recipient selection, community education, and program monitoring.

Time commitment: Three Board meetings per year. Some ad-hoc work outside the Board meeting cycle will be required. Participation in at least one Board Committee is expected, which meet periodically.

Remuneration: This is a voluntary, unremunerated role. Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses can be reimbursed.

DESCRIPTIONROLE

We are recruiting for a voluntary position to join our Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for ensuring World Bicycle Relief adheres to its charitable purposes and mission. Board Directors provide their advice and assistance, according to their experience, supporting high quality leadership of our organization globally.

• entrepreneurs and development leaders who are from or connected to, Africa.

• The ability and willingness to represent the organization and to play an ambassadorial role with policy makers, supporters and others.

• Safeguard World Bicycle Reliefs’ charitable objectives, activities and values and contribute actively to the Board’s role in shaping strategy.

• Take reasonable care when making decisions for the organization (“duty of care”).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• A collegial approach with strong relationship building abilities.

• A wholehearted commitment to the values and principles of World Bicycle Relief.

• those with experience working with the most senior levels of corporate trusts and foundations, or as an institutional connector, and/or,

• An interest in the NGO sector and the operating environment of World Bicycle Relief.

• Previous senior leadership experience and an ability to contribute effectively to a high performing board.

• When possible, visit WBR in the field.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• Sound independent judgement, strategic vision, and creativity.

In particular, we are interested in:

• Provide expertise and insight to staff as needed and introduce key WBR staff to potential funders in a pro-active and personally engaged way.

• Act in the best interest of the organization (“duty of loyalty”) and in accordance with the organization’s mission (“duty of obedience”).

• A commitment to fairness and to promoting equality and inclusion.

• An understanding and acceptance of the role and responsibilities of a Board Director.

If you are interested in becoming a Board Director of World Bicycle Relief (US Board), you should be able to demonstrate the following characteristics:

• Galvanize support for the mission within the wider community and own network, and act as an ambassador for World Bicycle Relief.

In addition to the above, you will bring experience operating at a senior strategic level, and bring respected insights and relational networks.

• Devote the necessary time and effort to develop a deep understanding of World Bicycle Relief and its activities, and participate in at least one Board committee.
