Director of Fundraising Appointment Brief October 2021

Introduction Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Fundraising at the British Asian Trust. The British Asian Trust is a unique organisation. Driven by the South Asian diaspora, we operate on the cusp between philanthropy and impact investment, implementing programmes that are bold and ambitious in their vision for social change. We believe that doing good and doing well are not mutually exclusive. We are at the cutting edge of using impact linked financial tools in international development work. This is an incredibly exciting time for the organisation as we seek to maximise the opportunity of recent growth and successes. Our annual turnover has increased from £1m in 2016 to an estimated £20m this year. In addition to that we are about to launch a £50m anti-trafficking fund and a £17m impact bond. We expect this growth trajectory to continue. This will be achieved by growing and diversifying our income streams and maximising the opportunity of being supported by some of the most successful South Asian business leaders and entrepreneurs in the world. Following our recent merger with Elephant Family, a Royal conservation charity, we are now in the process of developing an exciting and ambitious conservation strategy. We are looking for an exceptional Fundraising Director with a proven track record in philanthropy to lead this growth. This role is not for the faint-hearted or someone who is happy with ‘business as usual’. It is a senior role in a fast-paced entrepreneurial organisation. You must be comfortable in a dynamic and fast-changing environment – at one moment thinking big and strategically, the next rolling up your sleeves and working alongside the team. You will be joining a small, high-performing team that has achieved great success in recent years. You will also have the full backing of a Board of Trustees and a CEO who are all committed to fundraising and making asks. You will also be a brilliant fundraising leader and have a demonstrable track record in being entrepreneurial and commercially astute. Most importantly, you must be tremendously ambitious for yourself and for the organisation. If this sounds just like you - we really want to hear from you! Richard Hawkes Chief Executive

Who we are and what we do

The British Asian Trust was founded in 2007, by HRH The Prince of Wales and a group of British Asian business leaders, to tackle widespread poverty, inequality and injustice in South Asia.

These key principles drive our approach:

We are a diaspora-led international development organisation, delivering high-quality programmes in South Asia. We specialise in, and champion the use of, social finance products to drive positive change across the region.

We convene powerful cross-sector partnerships.

The private sector has a central role to play. We invest in learning, innovation and entrepreneurship. We support scalable and sustainable solutions. We safeguard the wellbeing of the people that we work with and for. We can always learn and improve.

There are exciting developments happening at the moment in all of our programmes (education, mental health, livelihoods, anti-trafficking and conservation) in all of the countries across South Asia where we work.

Finances Following enormous challenges across the whole sector in 2020, we have had an incredibly busy and successful period that has seen us raise more than £15m in five months. We ran a hugely successful emergency appeal for India that raised over £6m and at exactly the same time we were raising more than £2m in an Aid Match appeal (with the UK Government providing a further £2m in match funding). This, together with other successes, has put us in a tremendously strong position and is enabling us to really invest in our capacity for future growth.

This diagram demonstrates our current financial position:
