Director, Public
& Communications Appointment Brief September 2022
2 Deputy
Director, Public Giving & Communications

Welcome

A staggering 90% of the 1.1 billion cases of visionloss in the world are treatable or preventable. Yet, for people in low-and-middle-income countries, in which 9 out of 10 of all cases occur, access to quality and affordable eye care is limited or non-existent.

For those living in or close to poverty, vision-loss limits opportunities for a decent education or livelihood, reinforces gender inequality and isolates people from their community.

However, by increasing access to quality and affordable eye care we can transform lives and support more people in low-and-middle-income countries to escape the cycle of poverty.

Despite this huge global issue and the innovative solutions that Orbis delivers, nowhere near enough people are aware of what is happening and how they can get involved to help.

The Deputy Director, Public Giving & Communications is fundamental to changing this.

There is immense potential for Orbis to be a prominent brand and a greater-supported cause in the UK and Europe.

Sight-loss and blindness are relatable and compelling topics for many people. Our work is broad in its scope and truly global in its reach. You will have at your fingertips real-life and emotive stories to reach and engage audiences, including our sight-saving work with babies, children, women and those in disadvantaged communities across Asia, Africa and South America to name a few locations.

You will have hero figures to feature, be it the local eye care professionals we train, our Volunteer Faculty experts who provide the training, the pilots of our state-of-the-art Flying Eye Hospital or the people whose lives are transformed thanks to our vital work.

You will also be able to communicate how our work is achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the World Health Organisation trachoma elimination goal.

The purpose of Orbis UK is to generate income – so everyone at all levels of the organisation is focused on achieving this. You will have the freedom and tools to try new things - innovate, test and learn, seek investment in proven concepts. And the trust to fail-fast.

Overseeing our public giving and legacy income streams, you will be responsible for two-thirds of our voluntary income. And you will be trusted with the communications responsibility for wider Orbis UK opportunities and challenges.

Your ultimate goal is to grow our income from the general public by acquiring new donors and increasing the value of existing donors. You will bring the skills and experience of having delivered this in your previous roles, as you lead your team to systematically implement proven principles across marketing, engagement and brand.

Your audience and data-led approach will be the basis for the activities you deliver, as you use data and insight to build on what works and iterate products and processes to optimise performance.

If you are ambitious, analytical, creative, a critical thinker, natural leader and outcome-focused - this role is perfect for you.

We look forward to receiving your application.

All the best, Colman

Colman Cawe Director of Fundraising & Communications
Thank you for your interest in becoming Orbis UK’s Deputy Director, Public Giving & Communications – a newly created role that is pivotal in our fight against avoidable vision loss.

About us

Why we exist

Over 1.1 billion people across the world live with vision loss, including blindness. A staggering 90% of cases are avoidable.

But most people affected by vision loss live in low-and-middle-income countries where access to quality eye care is limited or nonexistent.

We believe that access to eye care is fundamental to a person’s human rights and should not be determined by where they live.

Our solution

Orbis operates a sustainable and scalable ‘Treat. Train. Innovate.’ model in which we:

• Treat people with vision-loss via our in-country programmes with local governments and delivery partners in primary, secondary and tertiary care.

• Train local eye care professionals in lowand-middle income countries to treat people in their own communities, day after day. Year after year.

• Innovate to enable more people with vision-loss to be treated and more eye care professionals to be trained.

4 Deputy Director, Public Giving & Communications

Strategy

Orbis UK is an affiliate of Orbis International and therefore our main purpose is to generate the income required to deliver our programmes and fund the organisation.

This unique position as an income-generating organisation ensures a culture that is fundraising-led and open to opportunities to growing our income.

We are in the process of defining the Orbis UK strategy, so you will have the opportunity to input and implement across your division and the wider directorate.

We are conscious of the impact that the cost of living will have on giving from the general public as well as the reduction in the UK Aid Budget and how this will affect our statutory income generation.

Yet, there is so much untapped potential and a raft of compelling stories and products that we can take to key audiences with the greatest propensity and capacity to support Orbis. We are therefore looking for a Deputy Director, Public Giving & Communications who can systematically apply best practice to effectively engage and secure new donors, grow the lifetime value of our loyal existing supporters and build our long-term legacy income with an investment in legacy marketing now.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

People are at the heart of who we are and what we do.

Orbis UK is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) in the workplace and throughout our organisation. People are at the heart of who we are and what we do, so we believe in embedding policies and procedures that foster an equitable and inclusive environment for our staff, expert volunteers, and the people we support.

Our ED&I working group, consists of various staff members across different departments. We often discuss important ED&I topics, educate, and inform staff and introduce initiatives that help us deliver our vision and mission in the best ways possible. This dedication to ED&I has led to some important and necessary changes at Orbis UK.

The Management and Trustees of the Organisation are committed to creating and maintaining policies and procedures that ensure everyone is treated equally.

We value the benefits that a diverse range of views and experiences can bring to the organisation. We will constantly strive to create an environment, representative of and responsive to different cultures and groups, where everyone has an equal chance to succeed.
