VISITING PROFESSOR OF DRAWING 3 YEAR APPOINTMENT From January 2017

AUB.AC.UK

Arts University Bournemouth We are seeking the appointment of a Visiting Professor of Drawing to bring distinction and enhancement to this area of our work. The Arts University Bournemouth is a specialist higher education institution whose subject offer is confined to the disciplines of art, design, media and performance. Established in 1883 it is one of the few remaining independent art schools in the UK. Whilst its name has changed to reflect the new circumstances of higher education AUB retains much of its original mission as an art school, privileging studio-based learning and teaching and the progression of its graduates to the creative industries.

DRAWING Drawing has provided the means through which some of our most creative practitioners have achieved success and international prominence. The fundamental skill of drawing is at the centre of courses taught at the Arts University. It continues to inform traditional arts disciplines as well as those using digital and other new media which increasingly underpin our creative industries. Drawing also has the ability to release students who have been impaired in their learning by difficulties with word- based communication. The Arts University wishes to reassert the importance of drawing to the contemporary creative curriculum.

THE DRAWING STUDIO We have completed the construction of the first specialist drawing studio to be built in a UK college or university for over a century. Designed by our alumnus Professor Sir Peter Cook RA, the founder of the Archigram movement and the architect responsible for many internationally renowned projects, this is Sir Peter Cook’s first UK commission. The studio celebrates light and provides a space to accommodate drawing as a focused creative activity. The structure upholds the four light-central themes for looking and drawing. It has a large north-light aperture in the studio tradition, a rear clerestory that throws a softer light back from the rear wall, a discrete even gentler light that filters from beneath a bench on the east side, and finally, a graded wash of light that travels along the curve of the entrance door. The new space will provide students with a place in which drawing can be taught and practiced – an iconic, landmark building that reflects the centrality of drawing at this university. David Hockney was patron of the appeal which raised funds for the project. The studio was opened by the late Zaha Hadid, indeed the last public event she performed before her untimely death.

VISITING PROFESSOR OF DRAWING The Arts University has established a Professorial Chair in Drawing. In the art school tradition of the drawing master/mistress, the incumbent will bring distinction and example to the work taking place in the studio and to reinforce the University’s commitment to the centrality of drawing in the teaching and learning of its students. The University wishes to attract a practitioner of national standing to work in this landmark Drawing Studio. The post of Visiting Professor of drawing will: • Offer a sequence of classes and workshops which will augment the established programme of drawing classes for students • Demonstrate the ways in which drawing expresses ideas and emotions and provides starting points in art and design • Provide mentorship for existing and established staff • Explore the range of media which may be used in drawing • This is a visiting professorial post with defined attendance during the academic session comprising one week of master classes in each term linked to portfolio reviews and critiques.

REMUNERATION The post of Visiting Professor in Drawing will attract an annual stipend of ÂŁ15,000. In addition the University will pay reasonable travel and accommodation expenses for each week of residency. This represents the total emolument for the post and has no further payment/s in regard to pension or other expenses. Appointment to the post will be for a period of 3 years in the first instance and is tenable from the 3rd of January, 2017

Closing date: 11th November 2016
