14 How to Apply B

Chief Executive Officer | Brain & Spine Foundation | November 2018

Welcome Dear Candidate, It is an incredibly exciting time to be joining The Brain and Spine Foundation. I founded the charity 26 years ago and we are the only specialist charity in the UK whose aim is to improve the quality of life of people affected by neurological problems. During that time, we have grown to become one of the top 5% of all UK charities in terms of fundraising but we are still at a fraction of the level achieved by heart and cancer charities. Whilst neurological conditions are often considered rare, there are, in fact, over 350 different conditions of the brain and spine that together affect more than 12 million people in the UK. In many cases these conditions have long-term impacts without the prospect of a cure. The simple reality is this: In the next 6 years, there is a 1 in 10 chance of turning to The Brain and Spine Foundation for help. Now is the time to chart a new course to take the charity to the next level. This is premised on four strategic imperatives – build the brand, increase our profile, accelerate fundraising and enhance our services.

inspiring CEO that can take a great team and a vitally important purpose, to develop a new strategy and influence change with the urgency and energy that is required. Core to this will be the ability to grow revenues from £1m to £3m across the next three years. An ambitious but realistic target if we are to extend the services that we provide. I am enormously proud of everything that the charity has been able to achieve over the last 26 years but I’m acutely aware that there is so much more we need to achieve. Neurological services in the UK are the scarcest in any OECD nation, with fewer than 20 hospitals in the UK housing specialist units with neurosurgeons such as myself. As a consequence, 95% of patients are cared for by non-specialists, providing the most basic care of only the acute catastrophes these disorders generate, leaving a massive unmet need. Uniquely extreme in our country, this is the environment in which our Foundation attempts to respond. If you are excited by the challenge, think you have what we are looking for and would like to join me and a motivated senior team, led by an imaginative, ambitious, invested and unified Board, I very much welcome your application. Peter J Hamlyn MBBS Bsc MD FRCS FISM

To ensure that this exciting ambition is realized, we are looking for a visionary and

About

T

he Brain & Spine Foundation exists to improve quality of life for anyone affected by a neurological problem, whether the patient themselves or anyone in the circle around them – family, friends, carers and health professionals. We are there at every stage from first symptoms, during the wait to see a specialist and in the long term when lack of community care means that there is often nowhere else to turn. We provide vital support and information to enable people to understand their condition, to reduce anxiety and to empower them to manage their condition in the best way they can.

2

We are the only UK-wide charity providing expert support on the full range of neurological conditions. The charity’s objectives are the advancement of support for people affected by neurological problems in the UK for the public benefit and in particular by:

1

Providing information, support and services to people affected by neurological problems, their families and the professionals who work with them;

2

Promoting understanding of neurological problems.

Chief Executive Officer | Brain & Spine Foundation | November 2018

We are: Expert: We work to a high standard and use the expertise of health professionals and our users to produce quality information and support services.

Inclusive: We will support anyone who needs us; we’re caring and respectful towards our users and each other. We listen to the needs of people affected by neurological problems and provide an accessible person-centred service.

Empowering:

Learning & Growing: We’re ambitious about what we can achieve for people affected by neurological problems. We learn from experience and work innovatively to grow and improve what we do.

Collaborative: Working in partnership with others, including patients, health professionals and other charities to get the best results for anyone affected by neurological problems.

Values:

We help people to help themselves; by providing information and support we enable individuals to take control of their own journey. We’re there in the background when they need us. The Brain & Spine Foundation was formed in 1992 by neurology specialists to provide muchneeded information and support for people affected by every one of the 350+ neurological disorders, which we now know affect 12 million people in the UK. Read more about the charity’s history on our website Neurological conditions and associated treatments are often complex and poorly understood by those affected and their families. Many people wait for a long time for diagnosis while living with ongoing symptoms and the anxiety of not knowing what the future holds. A recent survey showed that 42% of neuro patients saw their GP five or more times before seeing a neurological specialist. Following that, 19% of patients waited more than a year to see a neurological specialist after seeing a GP. These delays lead to later diagnosis, so treatments start later which can lead to poorer outcomes and anxiety. The Brain & Spine Foundation exists to provide information, answer questions, reduce anxiety and to inform choices. Our Helpline team provide tailored information and specialist support for anyone affected by a neurological problem. We’re here to help anyone

with questions about a neurological problem or concerns about a family member or a friend. We also support health professionals in their work, answering questions and signposting to patient services. The helpline is free and totally confidential. “I called the Helpline and had an amazing chat with Eva, who gave me so much relevant information and delivered it with great patience and understanding. This is the first time I’ve called the Helpline and I wish I’d done it ages ago.” Janice, Helpline caller In addition, we provide over 25 informative booklets and fact sheets on different conditions, procedures and symptoms. Accredited by the NHS England’s Information Standard, the publications are freely available online, by post and through our partner organisations. “I just wanted to tell you what a huge comfort, encouragement and inspiration the information has provided, it just makes so much difference to appreciate what’s going on, the likely causes and my chances of a full recovery.” Paul, downloaded a booklet 3

Finances

T

he 2017-18 financial year saw total income of £700,272. This includes a strong base of income from grant-making trusts, events, legacy and individual giving. Over the last two years we’ve been successful in growing trusts (400% increase from 2015-16) and individual giving (increased by 41% since 2015-16) in particular. Legacies and event fundraising have remained reliable income streams, raising £132,000

and £135,000 respectively. Total income in this year was lower than the previous year, primarily due to lower level of legacy income, which was exceptionally high in 2016-17. Total expenditure in the year was £836,950 which is broadly consistent with the previous year. Designated funds which were allocated in previous years were used in 2017-18 to invest in the charity’s growth, including a new website, expanding the fundraising team with an additional post and for our office space. We ended the year with £423,992 in reserve which equates to around 6 months operating costs.
