ABOUT US We place equal value and bring the same approach to everything we do: the highest quality; a distinctive, ‘seriously informal’ style of performance that removes the barriers between musicians and audiences so that people can experience the transformative power of music; and a warmth of music-making that is created through our musicians sharing a wider range of experiences together beyond the concert platform. Through our Meet the Music Programme, we spend over 150 days every year in schools where social background often creates a barrier to creativity and ambition, hospitals for young people with severe and challenging conditions, and with older people dealing with loss of loved ones and memory. This approach involves inviting artists from across the arts to enhance and transform our performances. Outstanding classical musicians collaborate with musicians in jazz, folk and contemporary music, artists in film, dance or visual art or with explorations of science, history or philosophy, giving an extra dimension to new music and shedding new light on the familiar. Audiences can immerse themselves in a world that brings together music with the visual, the adventurous and the thought provoking. A CLS performance is often fun, but we do not shy away from inviting audiences on demanding musical journeys. In schools and nurseries our music-making gives very young children the chance to experience the joy and fun of orchestras

for the first time. It opens a path to performing, fires their creativity, and boosts their learning. Our family concerts create shared, interactive experiences across generations, often created with leading theatre and film companies. In hospitals, our music-making aids the healing process and is an invaluable creative outlet for young people with severe, life-limiting or psychiatric conditions. With older people, Holocaust survivors and those who are facing bereavement, our music-making helps to keep memories alive and minds active. As this approach grows we will continue to ask questions of ourselves, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of best practice, both in attracting audiences and in schools, hospitals and care homes. We will partner with leading research institutions to ask us challenging questions, and provide the hard evidence of the benefits of our activity. Each and every one of our musicians is the catalyst and driver of our approach, and is unusually committed to using music as a means of transforming people and communities. With our Creative Director and first violinist Alexandra Wood, and Principal Conductor Michael Collins, they conceive and deliver imaginative performances and projects with our Associate Artists, who come to CLS to achieve ambitions they could not realise elsewhere. The need for our approach is demonstrated by the growing numbers of people who are joining the wider CLS family – audiences, artists and not least those who support us through financial investment – who share our vision for transforming people in all parts of society through our outstanding music making.

STRATEGIC VISION 2017-2020

This is a vital moment in CLS’s history. We have an opportunity to complete both an organisational step change to financial sustainability and grow recognition of our distinctive and excellent artistic approach. We also plan to achieve the following outcomes: • Exceptional music making on the concert stage with outstanding artists from outside and within classical music. • Attracting new audiences to classical music, reaching over 75,000 people in person and 1,500,000 people through broadcasting across the country every year. • Transforming the healing process of thousands of young children in hospital, inspiring young children aged 3-7 years old in schools, and improving the quality of life for older people, reaching over 15,000 people across this activity every year. • Creating insight and robust evidence in all our activity to develop our own practice and demonstrate our leadership position.

City of London Sinfonia

FUNDRAISING City of London Sinfonia has been through a transition period from having a major corporate supporter, to building a broadbase of supporters. As a result a new strategic plan was adopted in 2013 alongside an increase in fundraising capacity made possible by investment from an influential and highly committed donor. As CLS comes out of this successful turnaround phase, there is an opportunity for our new Development Director to lead the growth in fundraising that will play a significant and meaningful role in securing CLS’s reputation and reach for years to come. Total income last year was £1.34m, with fundraising contributing £488k to that total, with the remainder made up of earned income (fees for concerts, touring and participatory work and box office income). Fundraising roughly breaks down into trusts and foundations (£292k), individuals (£114k), Arts Council England (£62k) and corporate (£20k). Current fundraising priorities include: • As we transition from a turn-around phase to a growth phase, reducing dependence on our highest individual major donor. • Increasing the growing capacity of the Board as catalysts of our fundraising drive. • Ensuring that all elements of the CLS artistic programme continue their growth as net contributors to our core costs. • Investing in our data capabilities, giving us better direct communications with donors and potential donors. • Expanding the number of funders, particularly multi-year funders, and improving stewardship and donor renewals. • Attracting increasing investment from strategic funders – those organisations whose support is seen as a benchmark of artistic excellence. • Moving the ‘fundraising window’ forward, to ensure that we are not reliant on ‘in year’ funding decisions and can plan with more confidence. • Maintaining the loyalty of the growing core members of our funding family.
