ABOUT US
WHERE PHILANTHROPY MEETS COMMUNITY
The Community Foundation in Wales is a unique charity established to inspire giving in Wales. Through our philanthropy advice and support, we connect people who care with causes that matter. We use our knowledge of social deprivation across Wales, and the voluntary sector organisations tackling it, to manage high impact grant programmes which enable local people to achieve inspiring and sustainable change in their communities. Established in 1999, the Foundation now awards grants of up to ÂŁ3million each year to charities and community groups on behalf of our clients, fund holders and donors. The Community Foundation in Wales is part of a UK network of 46 Community Foundations operating at regional and local levels, one of the fastest growing philanthropic movements in the UK. There are 1700 Community Foundations globally. As a national community foundation covering all of Wales, we are in the unusual position of operating at UK, national, regional and local levels. This positioning is appreciated by our donors philanthropists who are keen to make a strategic impact with their giving, improving the lives of people in communities of geography or cause, that they are passionate about.
4
Why Wales? Wales is a low-income nation with the highest proportion of adults and children living below the poverty line in the UK. Children growing up in poorer communities are less likely to do well at school and are more likely to have worse health outcomes over their lifetime. Social isolation, loneliness and the cost of fuel are also mounting concerns in a nation with the highest proportion of people of pensionable age in the UK. Health inequalities persist, impacting employment, life expectancy and wider economic growth. Many communities in Wales have some of the highest levels of unemployment in the UK with children’s educational attainment lower than peers in other parts of the UK. One in five young people aged 19-24 are not in education, employment or training, higher than the UK average.

Promoting Philanthropy As the only organisation in Wales dedicated to promoting and managing philanthropy, the Community Foundation in Wales has a strong sense of responsibility and ambition to be at the heart of where philanthropy meets community in our nation. A testament to this is our work in creating the Fund for Wales, the world’s only national community endowment fund, and our annual Philanthropy Week.

OUR FINANCES Our income is made up of three main streams: • Voluntary income from donations, which can be “flow-through” or endowment • Investment income and realised capital gains from our endowed funds held on the stock market and managed by our investment managers • Income from an investment property Flow-through donations and a portion of realised capital gains from our endowment are used to fund our grant programmes and donors also make a contribution to our core costs. For 2017/18 total income is forecast as £3.3million and total expenditure as £2.7million, of which £2.3million will be spent on grant-making. Total assets of the Foundation at 31st March 2016 were £13.6million. Of this, £11million is endowment, which consists of an investment property valued at £300K and an investment portfolio at £10.7million. With a strong growth in endowment income over the last ten years, the Foundation is currently reviewing its reserves policy. 2017/18 shows strong core investment from Big Lottery Fund and Welsh Government, and a healthy pipeline of prospective donors.
