The Beacon Collaborative
Letter from the Chair Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in this important role. It is an opportunity to have a profound impact on the whole charitable sector by operating collaboratively and at a strategic level. Philanthropy already plays a major part in our society, funding projects that others won’t and contributing skills and knowledge, as well as money, but it represents only a fraction of the potential private wealth that could be used for public good.
Our goal is to grow philanthropic giving and impact investing by wealthy individuals and families by more than £2 billion per year, which is more than the total income of the six biggest UK charities combined. How do we do this? We are a small team operating on a Collective Impact model, which means that we don’t compete with other philanthropy organisations but encourage collaboration and co-operation, as we all strive for the same goal of more giving and impact investing. Partnership is at the core of everything we do. We explore ways in which we can stimulate system change directly with our partners and through strategy projects that convene wider representation from across philanthropy and civil society. We also aim to give a voice to philanthropy and philanthropists, promoting and celebrating their work. Giving well to create social or environmental change is not easy and donors rarely have the opportunity to meet, share experiences and learn from each other. To address this we are building a Fellowship of philanthropists and impact investors through an online community and our annual Beacon Forum. We hope in the future to also foster local chapters of philanthropists. By giving voice to this community we can influence public policy and press coverage so that philanthropy increasingly becomes the norm. The right person will find this a challenging, stimulating role. It involves strategic vision and engagement with leading philanthropists, major funders, partners, government, wealth advisors and journalists, while also keeping an eye on the detail of projects, operations and fundraising. The right person will step up to become the Director of The Beacon Collaborative (Beacon). Thank you for taking the time to read this information pack and hope that you find the opportunity to create fundamental change as exciting as we do. Matthew Bowcock CBE Chair

Who we are We need to grow philanthropy in the UK and it is not going to happen spontaneously. Philanthropy is currently successfully practised by a small proportion of the wealthy population. But we need more wealthy people to be involved to realise an extra £2 billion a year to support civil society. We work collaboratively with the sector on a series of philanthropy and social investment infrastructure projects to ensure there is a more supportive and enabling environment for donors. Beacon is also a movement to connect philanthropists to create stronger networks: to be ready when new donors emerge and want to learn from their peers. We are philanthropist-led and funded: our model is collective impact to keep our core costs down and leverage the existing philanthropy sector infrastructure.
We work collaboratively to accelerate the pace of change. Our targeted activities convene the sector to work collaboratively on building a stronger ecosystem for philanthropy and social investment. We have delivered 16 activities so far, each has convened a Working Group from across the sector.
•
Activities range across peer influence, advice and support, research and measurement, public awareness, and political engagement.
Our communications strategy positions Beacon as The Voice for Philanthropists.
•
Our website aims to be a mind-expanding experience for those getting started in philanthropy and those who want to learn more.
•
We use social media to amplify our voice and the voices of those in our network.
•
Our Beacon Bulletin goes out to 850 philanthropists, social investors, sector leaders and pioneers spreading news of activity in the philanthropy community.
Our Organisations’ Council of partners meets quarterly, convening the sector for collective action to increase philanthropy and social investment. Our Philanthropists’ Council of leading international philanthropists and social investors meets three times a year to guide our strategy and amplify our work. Our Beacon Fellowship offers a safe space for philanthropists and social investors to convene and learn from each other.
