CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
WELCOME
Thank you for your interest in Football Beyond Borders (FBB). We are excited to be recruiting a new Chair to build on the great work the charity is doing and to help us achieve more. FBB exists to support young people who are disengaged at school and passionate about football, in order to help them finish school with the skills and grades to make a successful transition into adulthood. We do this by providing long-term, intensive support, built around relationships and young people’s passions, in the classroom and beyond. We are an asset-based organisation with a view that all our interventions must build from a young person’s strengths and passions. We were founded in 2014 and now work with more than 1,000 young people across our partner schools in London, Essex and Greater Manchester. Over the past five years we have grown significantly in reputation, scope and influence and we have put firm foundations in place to ensure that we have a sustainable future. Our aim is to become the UK’s leading provider of specialist support to disengaged Key Stage 3 students. As the Chair of FBB, you will bring your knowledge, experience and skills to help us to make an even greater difference to the lives of the young people with whom we work. You will be committed to delivering meaningful outcomes for our young people and to reaching ever greater numbers of young people through our national expansion.

As Chair of the Trustee Board of FBB you will be responsible for ensuring the charity is well governed and able to achieve its charitable objectives in the context of a fastchanging world. You will be leading a highly effective group of Trustees who themselves bring a mix of skills to the table from the worlds of football, education, finance, media, and business. You will also be expected to represent the organisation at our external events with our patrons and supporters from the world of football. This is a fantastic opportunity to support, strengthen and grow our charity for young people. This is an inspiring time to join FBB and help us transform the lives of young people. We look forward to meeting you. Yours sincerely, RICHARD WHEELER Chair of Football Beyond Borders
WHO ARE WE? WHY JOIN US?
Football Beyond Borders (FBB) is an education charity which uses the power of football to inspire young people from disadvantaged communities to achieve their goals and make their voices heard. We use football as an engagement tool to inspire young people to thrive at school and achieve their goals. We work with over 1,000 young people each week who are passionate about football. We work across a range of schools in both a mainstream setting and in specialist provisions, with a focus on Key Stage 3.
We are an expanding, vibrant organisation with a talented staff team working across London, Essex and Greater Manchester who are passionate about helping young people to achieve their potential. This is a rare opportunity to take a leading role in the driving the strategic direction of one of the UK’s fastest growing social sector organisations at a time of huge excitement and possibility.

OUR MISSION?
Our FBB Schools programme is a highly impactful programme delivered by expert professionals and built around the evidence of what works for delivering sustained change. Our programme is built on the following four theoretical foundations:
FBB supports young people who are disengaged at school and passionate about football, in order to help them finish school with the skills and grades to make a successful transition into adulthood. We do this by providing long-term, intensive support, built around relationships and young people’s passions, in the classroom and beyond. We are an asset-based organisation with a view that all our interventions must build from a young person’s strengths and passions.
• • • •
We expect all students who worked with us to finish our programmes with: •
National level qualifications in English and Maths GCSE
•
Social and emotional skills to develop positive relationships and manage their emotions
Attachment Theory Adolescent Neuroscience Developmental Trauma Humanistic Therapy
We believe real change can only be sustained through an embedded and holistic approach to our young people’s development. We work to become deeply embedded in the lives of our participants and in the communities we are based in. We do this through working with our participants both in their schools and through our community based evening and holiday programmes. This integrated approach is supported through intensive parental and teacher engagement achieved through parents’ evenings, teacher showcases and weekly text and phone updates. 4
OUR AMBITION?
We delivered our first FBB Schools programme to 15 students at a school in Croydon in 2014. This academic year we are delivering our FBB Schools programme to 1,000 young people on more than 50 programmes across London, Essex and the North West. We aim to become the leading football for education charity in the UK by December 2021, measured both in terms of impact and scale. We have the national partners in place to make this a reality with Nike, the FA, Impetus, Esmee Fairbairn, Gillette, NESTA and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation all key supporters of our work. There is a lot of excitement and interest in our organisation at the moment and there is huge potential for growth. However, the role of the Chair will be as much around ensuring we maintain the quality of our delivery and culture as it will be to oversee this national expansion. The Chair and Board would support the leadership to set the growth ambition and path to scale and create a culture of excellence and consistency across all functions.

HEADLINE IMPACT METRICS BEHAVIOUR AT SCHOOL Most secondary schools use internal monitoring systems to track incidents of poor behaviour. We use this system to assess change in participant behaviour over time.
of all FBB participants improved their behaviour
fewer incidents of poor behaviour from FBB participants who were paired with a Control Group student, where the Control Group received 13% fewer incidents
fewer incidents of poor behaviour from Year 2 FBB participants compared with 20% fewer incidents from Year 1
ATTITUDE TO LEARNING We judge that the most effective way of assessing the impact that we are having on a participant’s learning is by asking the teachers who know these participants best.
improvement in teacher assessed attitude to learning
of FBB participants’ attendance rate was above the national average
RISK OF EXCLUSION We work closely with our partner schools to understand which of our participants are at imminent risk of being excluded at the start of the school year.
of our at risk cohort were not excluded from school
