INTRODUCTION

Girls Not Brides is seeking to appoint an exceptional Chair and three trustees for its Board to support the secretariat in delivering its mission to end child marriage and enable girls to fulfil their potential. Since its inception, Girls Not Brides has benefited from a dedicated, passionate and committed Board. Our Global Partnership now has more than 1,400 member organisations in over 100 countries around the world. As we continue to develop, we are dedicated to expanding our Board in order to reflect the dynamism and diversity of the movement, and also to increase representation from across the globe.

Every year, child marriage denies 12 million girls their rights to health, education, safety and control

over their lives. The practice occurs across cultures, countries and religions, and holds back global efforts to address a range of development priorities. It exists in every region of the world, in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin and North America. A total of 650 million women alive today were married as children, and every minute 23 girls are still married before they turn 18.

The Girls Not Brides secretariat has teams based in Abuja, Dakar, Kampala, Kathmandu, London, Mexico City, Nairobi, and New Delhi. They coordinate and support the activities of the Global Partnership in line with our 2021-2025 strategy, which was developed in consultation with our member organisations and partners.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Prospective Applicant,

After three years at the helm of Girls Not Brides, I am stepping down from my position as Chair at a time when our organisation is stronger, and better funded than ever.

This is also a time to celebrate some real and sustained progress in the global effort to end child, early and forced marriages across the world. Today, more individuals, more organisations, and more countries are coming together to declare their opposition to child marriage and to work together towards its elimination. National, regional, and global coalitions are helping to channel collective efforts. Better decisions are being made, based on a growing body of evidence to which Girls Not Brides is directly contributing. And there can be no doubting the strength of the global commitment to end child marriage. There is now near-universal understanding that child marriage and other forms of early union compromise every aspect of a girls’ wellbeing and damage wider social and economic development. From human rights treaties to the Sustainable Development Goals, governments across our planet have loudly declared their opposition to child marriage and their intention to work towards its elimination.

While recognising real progress, it is abundantly evident that much remains to be done. UNICEF estimates that more than 640 million girls and women alive today were married in childhood. Absent a dramatic change in our current trajectory, we can expect an additional 150 million girls to be married by 2030 – the same year the international community has targeted as the point at which child marriage must end. This is not good enough.

An appreciation of the scale of the challenge should be used to orient direction and maintain momentum. At Girls Not Brides, we have refined our ways of working in response to our growing appreciation of what needs to be done, and how we can best contribute. Across the organisation: from programming to outreach to member relations, we are striving to improve in ways that will help us be better partners for change – and make a real difference to the lives of the girls and women we serve.

Our Governance structures are a critical part of this response, and the Board of Girls Not Brides must be as open to change- to transformation- as every other part of our organisation. We have done well to date, but we need an even stronger Board for a more challenging and even more ambitious future. Our new Chair should be an inspirational changemaker with the energy and strategic vision to lead the Girls Not Brides Board towards fulfilment of its vision to end child marriage. We will also be seeking three new trustees who will contribute their complimentary skills and experience to help nurture a future focussed organisation that is truly responsive to the women and girls that it was established to serve.

It has been a great privilege to serve as the Chair of Girls Not Brides. I warmly encourage those who are in a position to contribute to our vision of a world without child marriage to think about applying to join our Board. The task ahead is a formidable one. But helping to end child marriage is perhaps the greatest contribution any of us can make to the future wellbeing of millions of girls.

MESSAGE FROM THE NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE

Dear Prospective Applicant,

We are delighted to invite passionate, thought leaders and dedicated individuals to apply for the roles of Chair and Trustee at Girls Not Brides. This is a unique opportunity to join a global movement committed to ending child-early and forced marriage and to do all we can to ensure that girls everywhere can reach their full potential. This is a neglected global issue affecting over 12 million girls annually.

The context, our ambition and recent funding wins have been meant that Girls Not Brides is undergoing transformative change. This includes deepening our work at the national level through targeted investments, strengthening our global advocacy and ensuring that the “End Child Marriage” agenda is prominent on the worldwide stage. It also means strengthening our thought leadership around what works and increasing diversity throughout the organisation.

Given the clarity of our vision and purpose, we see the role of the board as ensuring that we have the right strategy, resources and governance to enable us to fulfil our purpose and achieve our vision to end child early and forced marriage. Therefore, as Chair of the Board you will play a pivotal role leading a dynamic and committed board that is responsible for shaping our strategic direction, overseeing our governance and providing the oversight and support to our executive leadership to ensure that we have the right resources in place. These resources including funding, talent, culture, knowledge, stakeholder relationships as well as brand and reputation.

In addition to the Chair role we have the opportunity to appoint three new trustees which arise from the completion of existing terms of service. We are seeking people with diverse experiences, backgrounds and characters to enable us to further strengthen diversity in our governance. Young people are also critical to our work and so we are especially keen to hear from young women interested in serving on the board. These roles require people who are passionate about our cause, deeply committed to gender equality and to the rights of girls. They also require people who will commit the necessary time and who have the requisite skills, experience and characteristics detailed further on in this document.

Joining Girls Not Brides as the Chair or as a trustee is an opportunity to make a significant impact on a critical global issue and be part of a respected and global movement that is making real, documented progress in ending child marriage. Working with our talented, passionate and dedicated team, led by Dr Faith Mwangi-Powell, you will contribute to a cause that can transform the lives of millions of girls around the world.

If this inspires you, we would be delighted to hear from you.

ABOUT GIRLS NOT BRIDES

Our history

Girls Not Brides was initiated in September 2011 by The Elders, a group of independent global leaders working together to promote peace and human rights. Girls Not Brides was created as part of their efforts to bring more attention to the harmful practices that hold girls and women back, and to encourage and empower others to work collaboratively to end child marriage. Girls Not Brides became an independent charity in 2013. Over the last decade, Girls Not Brides has had an exceptional journey of growth and progress bringing more attention to child marriage, evolving from a group of around 60 individuals, to a partnership with over 1,400 member organisations operating in more than one hundred countries.

Our vision

Our vision is a world without child marriage where girls and women enjoy equal status with boys and men, and are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives. Our vision challenges deeply embedded social norms that harm the lives of girls, women and their communities.

Our core values

• Inclusivity

• Integrity

• Pragmatism

• Collaboration

• Respect

• Determination

OUR WORK

We are the only organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a global movement to end child marriage and ensuring that this leads to tangible change for girls. Our network of over 1,400 civil organisations works in more than 100 countries.

Our strength and passion lie in these member organisations, who work tirelessly to ensure that all girls can stay in school, remain healthy and have the futures they dream of. Our partner organisations work across sectors –including health, education, human rights and humanitarian contexts – and range from small grassroots actors to large international organisations. Some are programme implementers and service providers, while others focus on research and advocacy, bringing child marriage to national, regional and international attention. Many member organisations have come together to accelerate progress to end child marriage in their countries by forming National/State Partnerships and coalitions. They use collective engagement to consolidate their work and catalyse national action.

Our Secretariat which is overseen and supported by the Board of Trustees has a unique role to play as a movement builder, influencer and knowledge hub. It co-ordinates, rallies and supports the collective work of the Global Partnership and the broader movement through a team of staff based in Africa, Asia, Latin America and London.

The Secretariat plays three roles in working to end child marriage, operating as:

• Convener and co-ordination body for the largest global civil society partnership working to end child marriage.

• Representative of and advocate for civil society on this work and;

• An expert resource and thought leader for the Global Partnership.

The Secretariat fulfils these roles by:

• Convening and supporting member organisations and other key partners to foster collective action at all levels to accelerate the pace of change in ending child marriage.

• Nurturing relationships with multilateral institutions, media outlets, potential donors, UN agencies and academic institutions.

• Collating and disseminating evidence on and understanding of what works to end child marriage.

• Building relationships with organisations and alliances working in different sectors – including education, health, Sexual reproduction and rights and humanitarian contexts – to ensure that ending child marriage is mainstreamed in their work.

• Spearheading collective advocacy to include ending child marriage in development and human rights frameworks and disseminating global and regional policy developments with member organisations.

• Increasing visibility and understanding of the impact of child marriage and amplifying local and global work driven by member organisations to end the practice.

• Ensuring member organisations have access to the tools and information they need.

• Facilitating collective action by national partnerships and coalitions and other allies at the national, regional and global levels. Read about our Board of Trustees

OUR IMPACT

When Girls Not Brides was launched, the issue of child marriage was almost invisible for many, especially in global fora. A few determined organisations were working on the issue, but there was little scope for them to learn from one another, share resources or work together to increase their impact.

Over the past decade, much has changed. UNICEF has documented a 15% decline, world-wide in child marriage, which means that around 25 million girls are now enjoying greater freedoms, opportunities, and powers to decide and direct their own lives. This change is no doubt due to a growing awareness, across the world, of the great costs associated with child, early and forced marriages. Ultimately however, it reflects the determined collective work of civil society, united around the vision of a world without child marriage, where girls and women can achieve their full potential.

These are just a few highlights from the Global Partnership supported by Girls Not Brides:

• The inclusion of a target to end child marriage in the Sustainable Development Goals.

• Increased understanding of the full range of approaches needed to address child marriage, and the role of different sectors, (as outlined in our own Theory of Change).

• Getting child marriage on the agenda of intergovernmental organisations including the Africa Union, the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation, the Commonwealth, and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophone.

• Bringing the issue of child marriage in Latin America and the Caribbean to global and regional attention.

• Advocating for and supporting the development of laws and national action plans to end child marriage in over 40 countries.

Establishing the Girls First Fund (GFF), a multidonor initiative to support community-based organisations working to end child marriage around the world. GFF subsequently initiated VOW: To End Child Marriage an innovative fundraising initiative. Both organisations are working closely with Girls Not Brides

HOW GIRLS NOT BRIDES IS FUNDED

The Girls Not Brides Secretariat is funded through grants from governments, foundations and multilateral sources. Their generous contributions enable us to support the work of the Partnership and catalyse broader efforts to end child marriage. We do not currently actively solicit donations from the general public. More details on funding can be found here
