Director of Development March 2018

Dear Candidate Thank you for your interest in this exciting, challenging and creative role at the Royal Institution. This is a fantastic time to be joining an organisation that is about to deliver a new strategy. I’ve just joined the Ri as its new Director and I couldn’t be more excited. The Ri is a muchloved institution with a rich heritage and a purpose to connect people with science, which is more important today than ever before. Science and its applications are core to the development of society. As an engineer, I have seen the ways in which scientific advances can dramatically transform people’s lives, and it has made me particularly passionate about public engagement with science. Successful delivery of our new strategy will mean that in five years’ time the Royal Institution will be bigger, more financially stable and more agile. We will be delivering more themed events with resultant media coverage and curated digital content that continues the discussion long after an event in our theatre has ended. We will be running a national science club and we will have extended the reach and impact of our educational offer. We will be engaging more loyal Members and achieving repeat engagement with people of all ages and diverse demographics as they follow a lifelong journey with science, tailored to their own needs and interests.

2

We will have connected scientists with the public and helped them to better understand their respective viewpoints. We will have established a leading academic Centre for Science and Culture and created a Fellows of the Royal Institution Programme, connecting scientists to our vision. We will have encouraged businesses and policymakers to critically examine how their decisions use science, and enable citizens, to make the world a better place. In all, we will be meeting our aspiration not just to create the scientists of tomorrow, but rather active citizens who have the skills and confidence to think critically, question and engage in informed discussions about science and its place in our lives. We are now looking to appoint a Development Director who can develop and implement a new fundraising strategy. You will work with a dynamic and ambitious team, and you will be fully supported by myself and our highly committed Board. I hope this opportunity excites you as much as it does us and I look forward to meeting you.

About Us Science and its applications have an enormous impact on all our lives, but in order to maximise the potential of science for the benefit of social wellbeing, cultural enrichment and economic prosperity, it is crucial to have an environment in which people are encouraged to think more deeply about science and its place in our lives.

However, several factors threaten this environment. While the evidence we have gathered shows that the public has a strong appetite for science, the majority do not hear or see enough about science, they do not feel informed about research and scientific advancements and they do not trust science journalists. For children, there is a lack of science at home, the primary curriculum is being squeezed out by literacy and numeracy, and exploration gives way to exam pressures during secondary education. Our own analysis points to a complicated landscape, with some audiences feeling confident about science, while others lack the support necessary to engage with, or even actively reject, science. The Royal Institution is uniquely placed to address these issues and meet the needs of audiences.

the L’OrÊal Young Scientist Centre is operating at capacity with over 130 schools attending in 2016. We are an energetic, impact-driven organisation, with creative staff well attuned to social media and the spirit of innovation. Our YouTube channel has nearly 400k subscribers and our videos have been viewed 34 million times. Digitisation of our archive and our commitment to make past CHRISTMAS LECTURES available on the Ri website have the potential to take inspirational content to new audiences. We also have a rich network of Masterclass volunteers engaging 6000 participants from 2000 schools, and explosive science in schools shows.

We have a rich heritage on which to build and there is a great affection for the Ri among our peers in the science community. We have a strong community of over 4000 Members with a high loyalty rate. We have a wonderful building, where over 26,000 science enthusiasts attended more public events over the past year than ever before; our Summer Schools and Family Fun Days are sold out; and

Vision A world where everyone is inspired to think more deeply about science and its place in our lives. Our vision encapsulates the need to create a two-way dialogue between science and society, relating science to people’s everyday lives. It requires us to continue to develop our historic building as a destination, while simultaneously increasing our digital activity and extending our reach. By creating a variety of opportunities for the latest ideas and innovations to be introduced, exchanged and shared with the world, people can gain a wider and deeper perspective about science and its integral place in culture and society.

2018-2022 Strategic Plan The Ri is in a financially stable position, with a new leadership team in place and a number of new Trustees appointed to the Board. Our strategic objectives for the next five years were agreed by Trustees in December 2017. Developed by Ri staff, and informed by audience research as well as input from our members, supporters and other stakeholders, our strategic plan provides a compelling and coherent direction for the future. Through audience-focused and Ri-focused strategic objectives we propose to transform our reach and impact, recognising that the aspiration inherent in meeting our charitable purpose cannot be achieved without increasing our staff and financial capacity, as well as awareness of our outcomes. Our audience focused objectives are to: • Encourage everyone to develop a lifelong journey with science • Engage business and policymakers in discussions about the place of science in society • Support scientists in their efforts to engage with the public Our Ri focused objectives are to: • Create sustained financial resilience to support our charitable objectives • Raise the profile of the Ri to increase our reach and impact • Care for our staff and volunteers to recognise that their expertise and passion provide the cornerstone of our future success

Our Finances In the 2016–2017 financial year we made significant progress in consolidating our strengthened financial position and our longterm financial sustainability. In 2016–2017 we generated £2.3m of trading income and £1.8m in voluntary income through fundraising (around £850k predominantly raised from trusts and foundations, patrons and corporate), membership and events. We have achieved a surplus of £0.28m on unrestricted funds compared to a £0.12m surplus in 2015–2016, and a £0.2m deficit the year before that. Our cash reserves remain robust with £1.07m as at 31 December 2017. Nevertheless we recognise that increasing our income – through a sustainable mix of fundraising and training activities – would allow us to do more, making long-term investment planning decisions to grow the Ri and maximise our reach and impact For more information on the Ri please visit http://www.rigb.org/ 10
