Spinal Screening Program School-based spinal screening helps identify adolescents with abnormal spinal curvature at an early stage when the curve is mild and may go unnoticed. Early detection is key to controlling spinal deformities. Spinal screening is non-invasive and conducted in accordance with the most recent nationally accepted and peer-reviewed standards.

All students who meet the Texas Department of State Health Services criteria will be screened for abnormal spinal curvature before the end of the school year. As appropriate, students will be referred for follow-up with their physician.

Other Examinations and Screenings (All Grade Levels) Vision and Hearing Screening - Every child 4 years and older by September 1 of the school year, those in grades K, 1, 3, 5, and 7, and those that are new to PISD, are required to be screened for vision and hearing problems.

Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes Screening – The purpose of this screening is to identify students with acanthosis nigricans (AN; which is a skin pigmentation due to high insulin levels) and to further assess students positively identified with AN for body mass index and blood pressure. Screening is required in grades 1, 3, 5 and 7 and students will be observed for the presence of AN during vision and hearing screening, or during screening for abnormal spinal curvatures.

Special Health Concerns (All Grade Levels) Specialized Healthcare Procedures A physician’s order and parent permission are required annually for specialized medical procedures such as catheterizations, tube feedings, tracheostomy care, specialized medication administration, etc. to be performed in the school setting (even if the student is typically independent in their care). These yearly documents are critical for the school nurse to have in place prior to the first day of classes in order to provide for safe, quality care and management of your child’s health needs in the school setting. Meningitis is an inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by viruses, parasites, fungi, and bacteria. Viral meningitis is most common and the least serious.

Meningitis caused by bacteria is the most likely form of the disease to cause serious, long-term 68
