What We're Reading
Visible Learning for Social Studies: Designing Student Learning for Conceptual Understanding
John Hattie, Julie Stern, Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey
How do social studies teachers maximize instruction to ensure students are prepared for an informed civic life? This book shows how the field is more than simply memorizing dates and facts it encapsulates the skillful ability to conduct investigations, analyze sources, place events in historical context, and synthesize divergent points of view.
Why did you choose to read this book?
I chose to read this book because I want to maximize instruction to ensure that students are prepared for an informed civic life. Social Studies is so much more than it was when I was a child. I am happy to say that the thinking around Social Studies instruction has shifted from memorizing dates and facts to analyzing sources, synthesizing divergent points of view, placing events in historical context, and much more. What did you like about this book?
Having read some other books about Visible Learning, I liked that this book was specific to Social Studies and offered best practices for applying Visible Learning to social studies. Did you race to the end of the book or was it a slow read for you?
I read this book quickly, but marked certain parts that I will refer back to when working with teachers and discussing instruction
Which part of the book has stuck with you the most?
The part of the book that stuck with me the most was the section about teaching for transfer. As educators, we work so hard to support students as they take the reins of their own learning and begin to make the connections beyond the classroom. If students do not appropriately transfer their learning, is our hard work and effort all for nothing? Was any part of the book so impactful for you that you re-read it?
The most impactful part of the book was about determining impact. It led me to think about the following question, "How do we know how powerful something is in creating change?"
How does this book support the work that we are doing? Visible Learning in Social Studies supports the instruction that we want to see happening in Social Studies classrooms. Additionally, it aligns with the Social Studies Skills TEKS by supporting the ways in which students are expected to engage with the content.
