Collaborative Construction

Robertson Construction was founded in 1997. More than 400 construction projects later, we have still, without fail, finished every project on time and on budget. We exceed expectations by fostering a spirit of collaboration among the designers, architects, owners and contractors involved in each and every project. It’s the only way to successfully execute complex, multi-million dollar projects. The only way to drive innovation on the job site. And the only way to usher in a new age of sustainable, green building practices in our industry.

At Robertson, collaboration is much more than a word—it’s our process. We call it Collaborative Construction and it manifests itself in our unwavering insistence on excellence, our commitment to honest and open communications and our legacy of lasting relationships. Collaborative Construction inspires innovation, fosters sustainability, demands dedication, encourages efficiency and relies on teamwork. Collaborative Construction gets superior results for our customers.

The John L. and Christine Warner Library and Student Center, a complex, $20 million construction project, came with a strict time line. Robertson’s expertise in project management and the firm’s dedicated staff of craftsman and builders, guaranteed completion on time, on budget and with a flawless safety record. With deference and respect for the student environment, Robertson collaborated with campus officials to ensure the safety of walkways and grounds and the continuity of regular class schedules.

Innovation

At Robertson, innovation is about refining our processes and communicating with the designers, developers, architects and owners to create the most workable, cost-efficient plan for a project. An openness to new ideas drives innovation more than the latest gadget. Yet, we always integrate industry best practices and invest in new technologies and in training our team. But still, we’ll never stop asking the common sense question: Is there a better way?

college officials and other contractors to create a workable project schedule to ensure the installation of a wind turbine and plug-in stations for natural gas and electric cars. Additionally, Robertson’s disciplined and conscientious approach to job site recycling and waste management complimented the architect’s vision of efficient green building.

R 02 There’s no turning back. Green building, sustainability, materials recycling—It’s not a trend. It’s the future. And at Robertson, we committed years ago to integrating these cost-saving, earth-friendly measures into our processes and continue a plan to reduce emissions and waste. And we’re proud members of the U.S. Green Building Council. Sustainability

Building a workable schedule and practical budget takes comprehensive knowledge. We are committed to understanding the vision of the architect and the owner and to fostering an open dialogue. That’s the only way to stay on top of all the details of a project and to know, when the job is done, it’s been done right. Jeremy Johnston, Vice president, project management

For Llanfair Retirement Community, a new Wellness Center and Chapel required more than promises of a project finished on time and on budget. The process mattered. The facility remained open during renovations and Robertson made sure the residents had unfettered access to their rooms. In preparation for the removal of a first story roof and the construction of a second-story addition, Robertson’s project managers held countless planning meetings in collaboration with the community’s staff and facility managers. The result: A smooth, incident-free process. Excellence in construction is the result of commitment. Completing jobs on time and on budget requires an almost stubborn persistence and focus on the end goal. At Robertson, our culture is tight-knit, our work ethic strong and our belief in doing things right the first time, unwavering.

Efficiency

Trust is the basis of all good business relationships, but it’s essential when it comes to the financial matters. I’m obsessed with the numbers—every nut and bolt has to be considered when quoting a job. At Robertson, we can sit across the table from our clients and say, with confidence, that we can do what we promise to do, on time and on budget. DAN STEVENS, Vice president, ESTIMATING

The $300 million marketer and operator of more than 130 convenience stores and gas stations—BP am/pm and Duke/Duchess Shoppes—has depended on Robertson for more than eight years to renovate and build new stores on the tightest of time lines. The standard project schedule is a short 90 days from start to finish. On one occasion, Robertson had just 70 days to complete a new station for a Memorial Day opening. Efficiency is no accident. It’s the by product of a detailed approach to project scheduling, open communications with clients and a commitment to build things on time and on budget. Period. With the standard construction process, budget overruns occur as the result of a failure to predict what’s foreseeable. An estimated 30% of the average building’s cost could be reduced or eliminated by avoiding foreseeable inefficiencies during construction. We’ve cracked that code. Deeply embedded in our culture is the belief that efficiency on the job site requires communication, painstaking dedication to planning and spot-on material choices. Experience and knowing the details of any project inside and out is the only path to efficiency.

When working with Ohio Heritage Bank, Robertson encouraged a transparent process among the architect, bank executives and the project management team. “It was a very open relationship,” said vice president Marty Merryman. “There was a true give-and-take between the architect and the construction firm. They kept things going smoothly and I felt it was a benefit to us.” Robertson’s role was clear: foster collaboration by advocating for an open dialogue and by retaining goodwill among all players on the project.

What does it take to be a team player? Trust. Respect. Humility. It takes the recognition that sometimes your role isn’t to be the center of attention, but in the background, behind-the-scenes. We consider our relationships with our architecture partners invaluable and absolutely integral to the success of any project. We build those relationships by respecting boundaries and understanding our role on the job site.
