THE BIG BALL GALA

Over the past 20 years, Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre has expanded its work into other areas of men's health with our Women for Men's Health Program. This year, the Centre’s very own board member and founder of Women for Men’s Health, Dr. Shelley Spaner, spearheaded the second annual Big Ball Gala. With the help of a 16-person committee, the event took place at Hotel Arts on February 1st, 2019. Dr. Spaner’s vision for the evening was to focus fundraising efforts on men’s mental health.

Globally, men die by suicide three to four times more often than women. This statistic is increased in men over the age of 65. With these staggering numbers in mind, Dr. Spaner called upon Karen Gosbee to share her own story and co-chair the event. Karen’s husband, George Gosbee, was an incredibly successful Calgary businessman who took his own life in November 2017. Karen, and her daughter Isla, brought the crowd to tears as they talked about how crucial it is to “break the stigma” and engage in an open dialogue around mental health and depression. The successful event raised over $100,000 and provided guests with a memorable night filled with fabulous food, stunning décor, superb auction items, and incredible live music. The evening would not have been possible without the help of our presenting sponsor Hotel Arts and their amazing team.

ROBINSON SUPPLY Robinson Supply is a leader in the distribution of plumbing, lighting, and electrical products to the construction industry. Robinson has an eighty year history of serving Western Canada and is committed to giving back to the communities they serve. Every year, Robinson Supply hosts a charity golf tournament with funds benefiting Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

Since their inaugural event in 2009, Robinson Supply has raised over $100,000 for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. Thank you to Robinson Supply for their unwavering support.

NUTRAISER In 2013, the first Village NUTRaiser was introduced to Calgary through a partnership between Jim Button, co-founder of Village Brewery, and the team at local pub Bottlescrew Bill’s. For this fundraiser, local celebrities create a unique beer by combining the testicles of a bull with secret ingredients to enhance the final product. Each year, the event continues to gain more momentum and has featured local celebrities like W. Brett Wilson, Bret Hart, Tony Spoletini, and Gerry Forbes. Each celebrity constructs their own unique prairie oyster ale. Once the beer is created, a huge party is held on the eve of the Calgary Stampede. At this event, casks are uncorked and all the guests enjoy the unique ale while raising money for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

A huge thank you to all those who have been involved with the Village NUTRaiser in the past seven years. We cannot wait to celebrate more in the coming years!

PRIDDIS GREENS CHARITY CLASSIC

In 1999, the Priddis Greens Charity Golf Committee launched the Priddis Greens Charity Classic — an annual event that has supported the work of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC) over the past 20 years. The unique three-day event starts with an opening gala evening and is followed by a two-day golfing experience. From its inception, the funds from this tournament helped us continue to offer valuable programs and services to our patients. As Dr. Bryan Donnelly, co-founder of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre said “The support from the Priddis Greens Charity Classic came at a crucial time when we were contemplating closing our doors.” The original tournament participants included some of Calgary’s most prestigious business leaders in the home building industry. Today, the Priddis Greens Charity Classic includes many of the original golf teams as well as new community philanthropists. With the help of the tournament golfers, the Priddis Greens golf members, and the PCC committee members, the annual tournament continues to be a huge success in supporting the work of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. The event remains one of the most highly anticipated annual events for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

To date, the funds raised from this event have totaled over $6.8 million dollars for our Centre. Thank you to the Priddis Greens Charity Golf Committee for their continued generosity.

REMINGTON CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre has partnered with the Remington Charity Golf Classic since 2013. Since its inception, the committee has tripled in size. We are so grateful for the continued dedication and hard work of these ten philanthropic committee members. Each of these members have had a personal connection with prostate cancer and are willing to champion our cause through both their actions and finances. The tournament’s success can also be attributed to the support of the committee’s personal and business associates. These individuals participate in the tournament and provide coveted sponsorships and auction items to benefit the cause. We are so thankful for the ongoing support of this event from these community leaders.

To date, Remington Charity Classic has raised over $3 million dollars for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

#NAKEDESPY In 2010, Megan Szanik, owner of contemporary fashion boutique espy, approached Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre with a unique and potentially risqué fundraising idea. The event would be called #nakedespy, and it would involve around a hundred men stripping down to their boxers to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. It was a huge success! Ten years later this event remains one of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre’s most original and lucrative fundraisers.

Thank you to Megan and her wonderful espy team for raising a total of over $200,000 for our Centre from #nakedespy.
