This is the report prepared by the National Park Service summarizing evidence and research on the Marylander Burial Ground in Gowanus, Brooklyn. This was the cemetery set up to receive the bodies of the soldiers killed during the Battle of Brooklyn on 27 August 1776. As this was technically America's first ever military engagement as an independent nation, this makes the site America's First Military Cemetery. Without the strategic decision to retreat and fight another day, America would have lost the War of Independence. Without Gowanus there would be no America. Isn't it time we commemorated our history with a memorial park?
