How can we Gradually Build a Green Infrastructure Network of Rain Gardens to Eliminate Combined Sewer Overflow Pollution? 0 2,000 ft DRAFT MAP for Preliminary Data Collection Purposes - all figures tentative until checked by NYCDEP
CSO Drainage Area Gowanus Watershed Conceptual Blueway Potential Study Site for Stormswale Corridor Rain Water Diversion Project Potential Stormwater Management Opportunity (existing topographic sink, where rainwater naturally collects) General Hypothetical Rainwater Runoff Pattern (basis for Watershed based Study Area) These are based on natural landscape channels where water would run with no building obstructions or storm drain diversions) Open Space (Existing Parks, but also includes any major vacant lot, or vegetated areas 40 feet away from building Gowanda Memorial Foundation
March 2011 Preliminary Discussion Map
Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Outlets with how many millions of gallons per year of raw sewage they dump into the Gowanus Canal (2007/08 NYCDEP data) Worst Performing - most sewage comes from these CSOs Sewer Main Potential Superfund Contamination Area The hypothetical storm flows shown were originally set up to reconstruct historic streams and springs. They may be useful for determining rain flow directions and the strategic location of a park or street end suitable for diverting storm water from a street segment where storm drains have been capped.
Where should Gowanus Sponge Parks Go?
Sources Base Map 2007 New York City Digital Base Map, 2004 USGS Digital Elevation Model, Potential Superfund Contamination Area from Plunz & Culligan “Eco Gowanus” Historic Sanborn Map Study, NYCDEP Sewer Maps, NYCDCP, NYCDOITT data, and custom open space and hydrology layers developed by Eymund Diegel, eymund@gmail.com. The Gowanda Memorial foundation is a fictional body dreaming about a swimmable Gowanus.
Where is the Worst Pollution Coming From? Where can Rain Diversion Sites have biggest impact?
