We custom tailor planning approaches to each institution yet challenge staff to improve through-puts and outcomes. This effort frequently supports innovative design systems that reduce operating costs while meeting clients’ needs for reliability and maintainability. As healthcare specialists, we are committed to excellence of the entire product. This led us to establish a separate Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing firm that works with us on many projects but at the same time has established their own reputation with hospital facilities. Proteus Engineering works in numerous facilities in their own right often with other architects. Our goal is to provide our clients with environments that positively impact their employees’ productivity, their patients’ recuperation, and their visitors experience at their facility.

HEALTHCARE OVERVIEW

HEALTHCARE OVERVIEW ARCHITECTURE AND HEALTHCARE It is important to understand the integration of the physical and psychological impact of the built environment on individuals, especially in a healthcare setting. Acknowledging that one’s mental attitude has the ability to greatly influence the health and well being of the individuals should make us aware of the significance that architecture has on the well being of the community. The history of hospital design suggests an inverse relationship between architectural quality and medical care. Economic demands placed on healthcare architecture in the Hill Burton era pushed facility development into the most economical and efficient parameters, but did not embrace the needs of patients and their families to heal. Planetree models developed at the turn of the last century were better suited to treating the patient and family in a more holistic manner, but in some cases decentralized ancillary services to the point that the staffing was no longer cost-effective. Today, we look at benchmarking similar clients and the projects and researching pebble projects through the Center for Healthcare Design, to promote an evidence-based architecture that truly helps the practitioners in improving patient comfort, convenience and clinical outcomes. Developing efficient, effective and safe clinical care is paramount to the design of healthcare facilities. The architectural solution is the result of detailed analysis and scripting of the ideal patient experience, as it is impacted by the appropriate patient care protocols. The key to a great solution lies in the flexibility of the design; as protocols change the department must be able to adapt with them. With a increasing recognition that effective healthcare is delivered in partnership with the patient community, architecture and interior design have a vital role to play in healing. By offering architectural quality, we can help deliver the crucial message of caring that is essential to the effective relationship between the caregiver and patient / family member. Physicians and staff are under increasing pressure to deliver medical care more efficiently and in shorter time frames; patients entering the hospital are more ill than in previous years, yet we are treating and sending them home in shorter length of time. We need to provide an efficient environment for the medical community, which allows for multi-disciplinary collaboration, but also allows for quiet contemplation when required. With clear, uplifting and purposeful spaces, we are able to contribute to the spirit of optimism that is vital to the well-being of those we design for, patient and healer.

HEALTHCARE OVERVIEW COMPLIANCE AND REGULATORY AGENCIES The assurance of code compliance in any project begins with the first design meeting, and is a major part of the project through construction completion. Proteus Group team members are constantly and consistently looking at the unfolding project design with a broad lens, keeping in mind all of the code compliance requirements of any facility offering patient care. We have years of experience with the many Federal and State department of public health regulatory bodies, including CMS, AAAASF, HFSRB, Joint Commission, HIPPA requirements, and OSHA regulations. We hold a wide knowledge of the applicable codes for patient care facilities, primarily the 2000 Edition of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, and the 2003 Edition of the International Building Code. Our knowledge comes from several unique and specific types of projects dealing with patient care environments, some of which include Life Safety Building Surveys and Master Plans, self-assessed Statements of Conditions for Joint Commission Accreditation, and assisting clients in developing a Plan of Correction for CMS Licensure Surveys. After years of proven reliability with the various regualatory agenccies, we have been able to develop a trusting relationship with them and are able to see projects through the design review process quickly and efficiently. We make ourselves familiar with the submittal requirements for each state’s regulations; this process sometimes begins with a simple phone call to agency to discuss the project, or a may include a formal Design Development submittal for their initial review and comment. This is a proactive way to ensure a smooth project review, and gives us the ability to make any necessary corrections early in the design process rather than at the end when there is a higher risk of cost implications. After all of the required approvals are granted and the construction is nearing completion, we are able to confidently submit our project close-out documentation and request final inspection for occupancy as required.

PROVENA MERCY MEDICAL CENTER INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU) RELOCATION Project Location: Aurora, Illinois Project Size: 16,000 sf Project Budget: $5,083,564 Project Services: Programming, Planning, Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering
Provena Mercy Medical Center completed a 16,000 sf renovation/relocation project for its ICU, which was previously located on the fifth floor of the hospital where patient flow from the OR's was a major concern. The new ICU is located on the first floor in an area that previously housed OR’s and surgery support space and is now adjacent to the new surgery addition. The new unit features 16 private rooms, decentralized nursing stations, support space, a conference room, offices, equipment storage and waiting areas. Each room is generously sized at over 250 sf, each with its own toilet area. The room provides a separate zone for family and nursing and is equipped with mobile computer workstations for bedside charting with an EICU monitoring system. The interior design of the space uses wood-look vinyl flooring; light colored wood finishes on the furnishings and a sage green color for the walls. Lighting is provided with a lay-in fixture over the bed that functions as an exam light/ reading light. Down-lights are used throughout the rest of the room to provide different levels of lighting depending on the time of day. The ICU unit itself is L-shaped due to the existing building design, making for a long, spread-out footprint. By employing a decentralized nursing station concept, each station accommodates two nurses and utilizes an open architecture plan that allows direct visualization to both other nursing stations and directly into each 4-10
PROVENA MERCY MEDICAL CENTER INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU) RELOCATION patient room. This new hybrid concept solves the isolation problems of a typical decentralized nursing station. The nursing station has an open peninsula desk rather than a counter to provide less of a separation barrier between the patient, his/her family and the nurse providing care. There are four patient rooms sized and designated for heart patients. These are linked directly to the Heart Rooms in the OR. The support spaces consist of clean and soiled utility, medications, nourishment, MD dictation, blood gas, offices and a conference area, all within the unit. There is a large equipment room and multiple cart alcoves located off the patient corridors to ensure the corridors are not used for storage. There is sconce lighting on the patient side and indirect linear lighting in the soffit above the nursing station, both on the patient corridor side and the nursing station side. This provides various levels of lighting and allows the nurses to dim the corridors at night to provide a better sleeping environment for patients, while still being able to control the light at the nursing station. There are two family sleep rooms, each with its own bathroom/shower facilities for family members who are spending long days/nights at the Hospital.

ST. ALEXIUS MEDICAL CENTER COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER Project Location: Hoffman Estates, Illinois Project Size: 23,563 sf Project Budget: $4,587,560 Project Services: Programming, Planning, Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering
The comprehensive cancer program offered at St. Alexius Medical Center includes Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiation Therapy, a Women's Imaging Center and a Women's Diagnostic treatment center. In addition, the department includes educational programming space, support space, and other complimentary and alternative programs such as Reiki Therapy. The color palette used throughout the space features warm earth tones and incorporates elements found in nature. The material selections as well as features such as therapeutic illumination systems in the Linear Accelerator vault, offer visual relief from an otherwise imposing environment. The result is an inviting, relaxing setting designed to reduce the stress and anxiety of the treatments. Because the treatment of most patients involve repeat visits to the space for extended periods of time, systems have been implemented to streamline the experience. Patients are pre-registered and have a registration identification swipe card. Upon entering, patients simply swipe their card and the staff is notified of their arrival. The card entitles the patient entrance into a designated gated parking enclosure with a separate, discreet entry into the Center. The registration system then registers them and processes their paperwork. Educational resources and amenities are available for patients. 4-12
ST. ALEXIUS MEDICAL CENTER COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER Combinations of diagnostic and therapy services are offered on a single floor, allowing the hospital to provide state-of-the-art care in an appealing setting. Amenities such as valet parking, a large assortment of coffee beverages, and a spa-like setting make the care experience ideal for patients and visitors.

ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER SURGICAL RENOVATION Project Location: Elk Grove Village, Illinois Project Size: 5,000 sf Project Budget: $5,100,000 Contractor: Power Construction Project Elements: Programming, Planning, Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering
This project included the expansion of the current surgery department by (4) operating rooms and the renovation of the existing surgery suite which was phased over a 9 month period. The new operating rooms were designated for minimally invasive surgeries but are sized and designed to handle any type of operation. They utilize the stateof-the-art technology in surgery suite design. One of the unique features of the room in addition to the technology is the use of wood looking laminate for the casework. While still durable and hygienic it provides a warmer feature within a normally cold sterile environment for the staff and patients. One of the engineering challenges of this project in addition to the extensive electrical requirements was the directive to keep the rooms at 62 degrees by the physicians. The scope of work also included the sterile core and sub-sterile areas and surrounding corridors and scrub sinks leading to the new OR’s. Proteus Group spearheaded master planning, design and engineering of the $5 million renovation project, overcoming considerable design challenges to accommodate new, high-end medical equipment within the existing footprint of the 1950's building. Design work for the suites was completed in a tight time-frame of less than six months.

The first is a Surgery expansion and renovation project which added 7,400 sf over the current Emergency Department adjacent to the current OR’s. The project consists of (4) Operating Rooms, (2) of which are designed as Hybrid Cath/OR's: (2) General Rooms, (1) Endovascular Room and (1) Future Endovascular Room, and Support Space. The second is the GI Department that is expanded to 4000 sf and increased the number of procedure rooms to four. Upgraded finishes for flooring, lighting, paint and wall covering were used throughout the suite. The third project is an expansion and upgrade of the current Dietary, Servery and Kitchen area. The new Kitchen, Servery and Dining areas were renovated and enlarged to meet current volumes and growth with the current courtyard space being enclosed to accommodate the expansion of the dining area. The addition’s exterior matches the current campus building. The thematic nature of the dining areas functions as a respite or get-a-way from the design theme of the rest of the current hospital aesthetic. The color palette for the dining area continues a warm neutral color palette but with the use of brighter accent colors and bolder textures provides a higher energy level to the space and creates a modern high-end restaurant setting. The lighting upgrades also have a visual impact on the space and set the mood as you move from the public corridor and hospital areas into the dining rooms.

OSF SAINT ANTHONY MEDICAL CENTER ROCK CUT CROSSING MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING Project Location: Loves Park, Illinois Project Size: 100,000 sf 35 acre site Project Budget: $19,200,000 MOB $ 6,900,000 Site Development Project Services: Programming, Planning, Architecture and Interior Design
Proteus Group was commissioned to determine the best site development configuration for a 35 acre parcel at the corner of Illinois Route 73 and Forest Hills Road in Love’s Park, Illinois. The village requested that the frontage on Perryville and Forest Hills would be smaller parcels of commercial/retail structures, with the center of the property to be developed as a multi-phase outpatient health campus. Proteus Group developed a ring road system to connect to each of the main arterial roadways, outparcels, carefully defined zones of parking, service routes, and areas for future expansion. The tiered landscape was developed with attention paid to restoring prairie grass buffers and integrating significant features to define avenues, and break down the scale of paved areas. The first phase of the building program includes a 100,000 sf ambulatory care building on three floors. The services provided include Immediate Care, Laboratory Services, Diagnostic Imaging, Women's Imaging Center and cafe on the ground floor; Primary Care for thirteen physicians on level two, and a combination of pediatric medicine clinic, sub-specialty time share clinic and home health care / hospice services on the third floor. The building design carried forward the materials and architectural language of a
5-2
OSF SAINT ANTHONY MEDICAL CENTER ROCK CUT CROSSING MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING familiar vernacular feel with previous OSF outpatient centers but moved beyond their prairie style. The red brick and stone detailing referenced site specific rock formations of the landscape in the building massing, banding/striations, and integrated the local quarried stone coloration. Strong vertical bands of glass offset the anchoring solidity of the tower design. The singular continuous standing seam metal barrel roof, fully enclosing all mechanical penthouse/rooftop systems, and the tower’s waterfall inspired lantern meant to be seen for miles at night, were signature features and clear markers to make this project a landmark for the public. Future phases will include another medical office building developed with more specialized but complimentary centers of excellence, such as cardiology services; an ambulatory surgery center; and expanded Women and Children services.

The DuPage Medical Group contracted with Proteus Group to design, update and consolidate a number of existing outpatient facilities to form a single, multi-disciplined Medical Office Building. The project was initiated to maximize the layout of the floors and eliminate duplication of services within the organization. The facility had posed some challenges with its proximity to the downtown business district. Conversly, the site’s close proximity to shopping, restaurants and other amenities, offered maximum visibility in the area, as well as enhance staffs’ work environment. The building program included a geriatric care and pain management center, fitness and physical therapy suite, family medicine and primary care practice, obstetrics and gynecology practice, internal medicine practice, phlebotomy lab, specialty care area, and a general radiology and screening mammography department. The interiors of the building are an innovative move from the traditional design aesthetic usually associated with healthcare providers. This includes: large format tile, interior curtain wall, terrazzo flooring and 5-8
DUPAGE MEDICAL GROUP MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING Color was added by using textured vinyl wall covering; and within the physician areas, the wall covering and wood planking was repeated in open waiting areas and at reception and nurse work desks to maximize patient interaction areas acting as internal wayfinding. In an effort to meet and maintain careful control over the project budget, the design team worked closely with the contractor and the developer/project representative to work through details at multiple phases of the project. The design process included multiple meetings to discuss concepts, show material detailing, and a variety of computer generated walk-thrus, three-dimensional and twodimensional renderings so more informed decisions could be made on the final design. Pre-cast concerete and curtain-wall subcontractors were involved early in the design to maintain the aesthetic while still meeting the budget goals. In addition, the integrated design included working with design-build contractors for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection work. This presented a unique opportunity for the design team to be involved with establishing design guidelines and product selections at a very early stage within the overall design process.

RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER RHEUMATOLOGY AND ENT RELOCATION Project Location: Chicago, Illinois Project Size: 27,000 sf Project Budget: $3,700,000 Project Services: Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering
Proteus Group began working with Rush University Medical Center in September of 2009 to move departments out of the 10th floor of the professional office buildings and Murdock building in order to expand adjacent practices. The fifth floor of the OAB Building was chosen for the relocation of Rheumatology, Otolaryngology and Communicative Disorders/Audiology. Each had its unique compliment of offices, examination and ancillary support spaces that had to be designed as a uniform whole in a 27,000 sf footprint. Working with the end users, we were able to successfully reduce their perceived space needs by over 28% to accommodate the required functions in a space smaller than originally programmed.

The patient is greeted in the waiting room with the reception desk consisting of dark mahogany woodlook laminates for durability and warmth and colored pendant lights to highlight the desk. The waiting room uses an organic patterned carpet tile with various shades of brown, green, and blue along with accent paints on the walls in green and blue to give a calm, relaxing feel to the space. These accent colors continue throughout the suite through the use of both paint and vinyl wallcovering. The recovery bays use a combination of woodlook sheet vinyl along with homogenous sheet vinyl to bring continuity with the existing adjoining suite. The nurse stations are constructed of dark mahogany woodlook laminate with raised glass transaction counters, which adds another texture to the

The client was looking for full assessment of all systems and the final outcome was to provide a report identifying all deficiencies and a 10 year plan to address these deficiencies. The facility had several additions over the years, and the idea was to have a central plant which would serve all areas. Many systems were beyond there useful life expectancy, undersized due to over-extending the systems or the additional loads necessary to meet current codes, or not energy efficient. The final report had a report card rating for all systems, similar to what is being asked by the PHA, to help provide a clear path of how to sequence the upgrades over an extended period of time. Equipment was selected; based on not only current status of the facility work plan, but taking into account the facility master plan that was in place which identified future renovations and additions. We also provided campus site master planning services and programming and planning services for a new patient bed tower project.

In addition, 5 of 8 bed units were remodeled to create private rooms and the campus plan was developed to create a freestanding Women's and Children's Hospital to allow for future privatization of the remaining rooms. Master planning of the infrastructure included new 2nd electrical feed emergency generator and central plant. Visioning sessions called for the addition of a new medical office building, plans for future office buildings, future parking expansion, a new ambulatory surgery suite and entrance, a new lobby and medical mall. The hospital recognized that the scope of the additions also warranted a redesign of the campus road and parking systems. In what was a very significant planning ges-

PROVENA MERCY MEDICAL CENTER CAMPUS MASTER PLAN Project Location: Aurora, Illinois Project Services: Programming, Planning, Site Planning, Architecture and Engineering
Provena Mercy Medical Center approached Proteus Group to assist John Abenshein in developing a facility master plan that would provide a road map for redeveloping the 80acre site they owned in Aurora, Illinois. As one of the oldest hospitals in the region, the campus needed both physical and aesthetic improvements to compete with the newer facilities that were built in their primary market over the last decade. Strategically, the master plan focused on replacing or improving the core practices of the medical center, facilitating physician and staff recruitment and subsequently increasing market share. In the first phase of development, the antiquated surgery department and central sterile supply/ distribution was replaced creating a new outpatient portal to the community; private rooms were developed for outpatient surgery intake, recovery and discharge along with twelve new state of the art operating rooms. The existing ground floor surgery suite was redeveloped as a new private setting intensive care unit – locating this service adjacent to the new surgery, radiology and emergency departments eliminating the vertical transport that had been required when the ICU was located on the fifth floor. Similarly, soft space from radiology department has been planned to expand into space vacated by the old surgical suite to allow for incremental growth of imaging modalities.
7-4
PROVENA MERCY MEDICAL CENTER CAMPUS MASTER PLAN As a part of the overall site planning process, we created a new entrance with traffic light off of highway 31, created a ring road with simplified entrances to parking lots designated to “front doors” of the medical center and consolidated administrative office support to allow for the demolition of a series of buildings that had outlived their useful lives. The properties outside the ring road were studied to develop “outparcels” for medical office / medical support functions, while new parcels created inside the ring road were allocated for future bed tower and inpatient or specialty hospital expansion. To improve visibility and competitive edge in the marketplace, Proteus Group assisted the medical center in developing plans to remodel existing nursing units into private rooms. The existing precast concrete Bed tower will be re-clad with a new curtain wall system to provide a clean modern aesthetic from the entrance. Infrastructure improvements will include replacement of existing cooling towers and one boiler, installation of two new emergency generators as well as a UPS back-up system for the surgical suite, and replacement of multiple air-handling units. Three onsite storm water detention ponds have been incorporated to the site planning to meet newer water management requirements within the Fox Valley River conservancy.

PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL CAMPUS MASTER PLANNING AND INFRASTRUCTURE ASSESSMENT Location: Nassau, Bahamas Project Services: Programming, Planning, Site Planning, Architecture and Engineering
For this project our methods are to “blitz” the facility with a full team of professionals to evaluate and assess the existing conditions, write a report of our findings, suggest block by block summary of improvements and a cost associated with the recommended plan of action. There are (4) facets we are addressing; 1) Physical condition of the facilities; during which the physical inspection the engineering team will evaluate each major building system, including the HVAC systems and associated controls, piped medical gases, domestic water and plumbing, fire protection and associated alarms and signaling, electrical power systems, and telecommunications. In addition, specialty systems specific to the patient environment will be examined. The service life, condition, coverage areas and expandability options for each system shall be examined and considered. Equipment or systems which operate marginally pose a risk to patient care and shall be identified as such. And issues associated with risk identified. After completing the physical inspection of the facility and examination of available documentation, a schematic level engineering solution will be developed to resolve the issues. Drawings, sketches and narratives will be provided to identify a feasible solution. A cost estimate for each resolution will be developed. Additionally, opportunities where a potential payback could be recognized from resolving the particular issue will be considered. 2) Quality of the environment; As designers we can contribute to that supportive environment. Today’s healing environments support the body, mind and spirit and nurture all the senses. They honor the needs of providers and patients and help empower us to reconnect with our own inner healing potential. The ability for your patient base to heal is largely influenced by their mental attitude and willingness to overcome their illness. We believe that the physical environment can and should bolster courage and spark a “joie de vivre” that fosters patient healing. By offering architectural quality, we can help deliver the crucial message of caring that is essential to the effective relationship between the caregiver and patient / family member. With clear, uplifting and purposeful spaces, we are able to contribute to the spirit of optimism that is vital to the well-being of those we design for; patient and healer.

OSF ST. JAMES JOHN W. ALBRECHT MEDICAL CENTER CAMPUS AND DEPARTMENTAL MASTER PLANNING Location: Pontiac, Illinois Project Services: Programming, Planning, Planning and Architecture
Site
Proteus Group was commissioned by OSF Health System and St James John W Albrecht Medical Center in Pontiac Illinois to develop a facility masterplan with three windows of opportunity: 0 – 5 year horizon, 5-10 year horizon and beyond 10 year horizon. In analyzing the projected growth, we were asked to evaluate the existing MEP systems and determine when major expansion or replacement would be required as the medical center changed over time. Working with the hospital and Hosking Klute consulting, we determined that the hospital (built in 2003) was in good condition for the shortest horizon of demographic growth. The major shift that would occur was more operational. The medical center anticipates the need to shift from semi-private occupancy in all of its med-surg beds, to private occupancy over time. Through much of the year this is currently possible, but in peak census, some rooms need to remain as semi-private. By increasing the size of the existing emergency department, we would be able to create observation bays that would take pressure off of the inpatient units during peak census. In addition, the medical center will need to present more of an ambulatory care focus as in-patients become more acute and migrate to the larger OSF campuses in Peoria and Bloomington.
focused on physician office space. The second and third phases of development focused on public space, emergency expansion, and visitor / patient amenities. MEP Systems were adequate for this time, although it was determined that eliminating an existing absorption chiller and replacing it with a more efficient centrifugal chiller would represent a significant energy savings over time, achieving a pay-back of investment in a very short timeframe. At no point in the horizon of this plan was a replacement of all systems to a central plant required. From an overall site perspective, the existing medical center has adequate land area within the ring road to accommodate the existing demand as well as the demand for all future building growth. To that end, the team evaluated the potential of creating several out parcels that could be developed by physicians or affiliated health specialties as freestanding medical functions. One site was reserved for a future convent that would be relocated from within the second floor of the

ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER CAMPUS MASTER PLAN Location: Elk Grove Village, Illinois Project Services: Programming, Planning, Site Planning, Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering
Proteus Group completed a strategic Master Site and Facility Plan for Alexian Brothers Medical Center. With demographics, reimbursement patterns and competition changing, the plan developed a vision for increasing market share, recruiting new physicians and privatizing rooms by 2010. Our plan focused on three strategic initiatives; the first was to develop adequate office space that is modern, convenient and accessible to patients, physicians and staff. Existing site constraints demanded the development of an expandable multilevel parking structure which effectively moved the location of the “front door” to the facility. The second initiative was to develop an ambulatory mall, which relocated diagnostic imaging and non-invasive cardiology to a structure connecting the existing inpatient facilities with the new parking structure medical office buildings. Staffing efficiencies would be increased by consolidating inpatient and outpatient testing services, and separating the traffic flow through the department by modality. Moving these departments allowed for incremental growth of surgery, emergency medicine, and invasive procedures adjacent to their existing locations. Third, the health system began to “brand” their centers of excellence as front doors to the medical center. Conceptually, these centers were developed not only to attract patients, but also specialist physicians and nursing staff that are the best
and brightest in the industry. Specialty diagnostic services were co-located with support to create short travel distances for patients, family members and staff. New centers of excellence included the Alexian Heart Hospital, the Alexian Rehabilitation Hospital (With Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) The Alexian Sleep Center, The Alexian Cancer Center, Illinois Gamma Knife Center, and the Alexian Neuro Institute. In order to compete with other regional hospitals, the health system wanted to develop plans for the incremental addition of bed towers which would allow for the privatization of beds. Key elements would include a new consolidated Medical and Coronary ICU, and private patient rooms designed around patient centered care initiatives. Several options were developed analyzing existing and new configurations with both

INTERIORS The term healing environment has become an industry, and even a cultural catch phrase, and subject to many interpretations. Above all else, it is important to emphasize enhanced recovery and a positive experience for patients, families and staff. At Proteus Group, we believe that the strongest connections we make are through our experience with space and with nature. We know that through interior design, we have the capacity to express intimately, and powerfully, the attitude of the hospital to patients and staff. Brand is perception and perception is informed by knowledge, so we look for authenticity of materials and continuity with the building architecture so occupants experience interior design that is uplifting, invigorating and real. We know that this is the best way to connect your brand’s message to your customers. While the notion of a healing environment can be overstated, the notion of a healing experience cannot, so by using subtle natural materials, daylight and by shaping spaces that provide a calming effect, we can contribute greatly to the sense of well-being. Good design is good healthcare, and good interior design has been proven time and again to aid in the healing of patients and improve staff efficiencies. We perceive our environment through our senses which affects our physiological and emotional condition. Using the latest ideas in family centered design principals and evidenced based design, we look to address the ideal patient experience that include the rights of patients, their privacy and dignity and will incorporate finishes that introduce nature and nurture into every design. Wood, natural colors that are warm and bright, environmentally friendly materials, day lighting, and ergonomically correct furniture selections will work together to create a total experience. The comfort of patients, family members and staff is important in enhancing the image and culture of your institution. We are constantly working with the latest ideas and technology that are seen in the healthcare and hospitality market segments. We take pride in our commitment to serving our clients well. From start to finish, we embrace each client’s vision and craft a distinctive design, bringing that vision to life.

CONCIERGE MEDICAL SERVICES FORWARD FOCUS MD Project Location: Lake Forest, Illinois Project Size: 1,200 sf Project Budget: $220,000 Completion Date: March 2008 Project Services: Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering
Forward Focus MD is a primary care practice catering to seniors that recently switched over from a traditional care giver model to a concierge medicine practice model and in doing so, needed a new space that reflected the level of customer service and attention they were providing their patients. The suite is the ultimate in efficiency, luxury, privacy, and amenities. Proteus Group was able to design a suite that packed a lot into a small space. The suite houses (2) large sized exam rooms, a lab draw / vaccine area, a large physician / consultation office, administration / billing area, a nurse station, storage and medical records support space. The other challenge with this suite was limited access to natural light. To enhance the experience interior window glazing was used to bring borrowed light into interior spaces and the use of soffits and indirect lighting creating the illusion of skylights. In addition, the bold use of color within the space added to its' drama. Furnishings were selected with a concierge hospitality feel, creating a space that reflects a high level of customer service and amenities.

Project Location: Chicago, Illinois Project Size: 270,000 sf Project Budget: $24,000,000 Completion Date: December 2012 Project Services: Core & Shell Architecture, Engineering
Proteus Group was awarded the Core & Shell architectural design project by developer Sterling Bay Companies, with the understanding that Hillshire Brands had to occupy the building in 12 months. This required going from conceptual design through full Construction Documents in just 10 weeks. This hyper-track schedule called for a delivery method well outside the conventional design/bid/build scenario to meet the rapid pace of required milestones. Photo while under construction
Proteus Group collaborated with Leopardo Construction to form a team of professionals to rapidly move the project from design into construction using the Integrated Project Delivery method. This process afforded real time pricing data as building details were drawn with the design team working directly with estimators, sub-consultants and trade contractors who were at the table during the entire design process. Proteus Group used Revit 3-D modeling software for the design drawings which then became the basis for shop drawings in the field. The design goal was to provide the most energy efficient building systems that would work within the client’s construction budget. The new boiler plant consists of six high efficient condensing type boilers. Utilizing boiler stages, variable speed pumps and an integrated control system, the plant will be able to run at optimal efficiency. Ventilation was provided by four new semi-custom rooftop air handling units totaling 800-Tons of cooling.

UBER TECHNOLOGIES, INC. REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS OFFICE RENOVATION Project Location: Chicago, Illinois Project Size: 10,000 sf Project Budget: $1,300,000 Completion Date: June 2014 Project Services: Programming, Planning, Architecture, Interior Design
Proteus Group has completed the office renovation work on approximately 10,300 sf for San Francisco-based Uber Technologies’ Midwest headquarters at 370 North Carpenter Street. The property owner, Chicago-based developer Sterling Bay Companies, awarded Proteus Group the project of designing the office space after gutting the interior, which was a former Kingdom Farms Inc. meatpacking facility. The new office space has brought Uber to Chicago’s meatpacking district, which is located four blocks from Chicago’s new $40 million El stop at Morgan and Lake streets. The space provides an expanded open office space with a series of perimeter phone and conference rooms, a laptop lounge, an indoor bike rack wall, a large break room, and an outdoor patio space. Challenges included that the building was originally a cold storage meat distribution facility and was heavily equipped with cooling equipment, ammonia piping, insulated walls and ceilings, indoor bollards and curbs to protect against moving forklifts, etc. In addition, the building had a mezzanine covering roughly a third of the footprint, which was largely demolished. Existing sectional loading dock doors and levelers were removed and replaced with aluminum frame storefront glass windows. The West and South walls received seven new openings to 8-8

The project is a build out of an OB/GYN suite for a satellite practice for a physician group in Jacksonville, Florida. The client desired a clean modern space with a spa like hospitality feel that is a step above the typical physician suites found in the local market. Through the use of natural materials and close attention to detailing and lighting design, the architecture creates a relaxing mood for the clientele. The project budget was met by carefully looking at each material and how it was used, and finding the most cost effective product to still meet the aesthetic requirements.

RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER ATRIUM BUILDING FIRE ALARM REPLACEMENT Project Location: Chicago, Illinois Project Size: 400,672 sf Project Budget: $4,500,000 Equipment Supplier: GE Security / Edwards Systems Technologies
It is the opinion of many that the most important systems in a building are those that protect the safety of its occupants. Fire protective sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire alarm and signaling systems and emergency communications systems all play a role in the protection of building property, and in the safety of those inside. This is especially important in a health care setting, where caregivers are responsible for the well being of patients that may not be capable of assisting themselves in the event of an emergency. The Atrium building at Rush University Medical Center was originally constructed in 1982. The building is somewhat unique in that it is a high rise building containing health care and business occupancies. The fire alarm and emergency communication systems in the building were original and were no longer supported by the manufacturer. Intermittent failures of the system, coupled with the inability to procure replacement parts encouraged the facilities team at Rush to undertake a complete replacement of these systems, with the engineers and architects of Proteus Group chosen to design and coordinate the project. Initial meetings with the City of Chicago yielded several significant challenges and some opportunities as well. Existing
smoke control systems were upgraded with new electronic controls and programmed to comply with current high rise requirements.
At the city’s insistence, the existing system was kept in operation until the new system had been installed and tested. Cost savings to the project was realized by utilizing the same peripheral device for alarm signals and for emergency communications. Additionally, all fire protection sprinkler devices were tested and certified as a part of the project. The project included the construction of an entirely new fire command center at the building entrance, which includes all signaling

This surgery addition serves as the new outpatient entrance on the Provena Mercy campus and primarily caters to patients requiring heart, bariatric (weight-loss intervention), orthopedic and minimally invasive surgeries, as well as endoscopy procedures. The new addition features 12 new operating rooms, 40 bays/rooms for PACU, pre/post-recovery, holding and ambulatory surgery patients and video conference links to the OR’s, 2-room endoscopy procedure suite, administrative and support spaces for the surgery department, and a lower level that houses the Central Sterile Processing (CSP) department, cart staging/storage, clean and soiled holding, general storage and mechanical/electrical space. The building addition includes entirely new and dedicated MEP systems, excepting steam, which was extended to the addition from an adjacent utility tunnel. It also features a unique UPS (uninterruptible power supply) back-up system — one of only three UPS systems in the country installed in a healthcare institution. The technology eliminates any/all lag time between a power failure and the start of a generator, a delay that for most hospitals lasts roughly 10 seconds.

RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER ARMOUR ACADEMIC FACILITY FIRE ALARM REPLACEMENT Project Location: Chicago, Illinois Project Size: 328,500 sf Completion Date: May 2007 Equipment Supplier: G.E. Security / Edwards System Technology
The high rise building codes enforced by the City of Chicago pose numerous challenges for engineers designing fire alarm systems. In some instances, buildings must comply not only with requirements for high rise construction, but also with requirements for special occupancies within the building. The Armour Academic Facility at Rush University, originally built in 1976, is one such building. The building is utilized as the main teaching facility at Rush, and contains many classrooms, administrative and media areas, plus a large library and study area utilized by medical students. Occupancies of this type have requirements beyond that of a typical business occupancy high rise. The existing fire alarm and high rise voice communication system for the building was not original, however, the system was no longer supported by the manufacturer, making replacement parts either unavailable or expensive. With the cooperation of the City, the existing system remained in service during the construction and commissioning of the replacement system. Cost savings to the project was realized by using the same device for both general alarm functions and emergency voice communication. The signaling system was designed to comply with current requirements for accommodations of the disabled.
All auxiliary systems were reconfigured to operate with the new addressable system, including the HVAC system, which pressurizes the appropriate areas in response to an alarm condition. Other systems were incorporated as well, including the sprinkler system and an addressable security system complying with the high rise code for locking doors to stairwells.

ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER GAMMA KNIFE SUITE Project Location: Elk Grove Village, Illinois Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection
A new Gamma Knife procedure suite was added to the ground floor of an existing parking garage and medical office building on the Alexian Brothers Medical Center campus. Program elements included a large Procedure Room to house the Gamma Knife, Control area, three patient holding areas, Nurse Work area, Physician Planning area, Physician Lounge/Conference Area, Framing Exam Room, Waiting Room for five, two toilets and auxiliary storage and mechanical spaces. The project required structural analysis for loading of the equipment and for the deflection of the floor slabs above. Due to the delivery date of the Gamma Knife equipment and source, the project was fast tracked. Proteus Group worked with the contractor, client, and the vendor in coordinating the delivery of the cobalt source and equipment to meet the deadline as well as the municipality security requirements.
ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER SURGERY RENOVATION Project Location: Elk Grove Village, Illinois Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection
This project included the expansion of the existing surgery department by (4) operating rooms and a phased renovation of the existing surgery suite. The new operating rooms are designated for minimally invasive surgeries but are sized and designed to handle any type of operation. The project space was adjacent to the existing surgical suite which remained in operation throughout the construction. One of the engineering challenges of this project was the routing of new mechanical infrastructure to the space without impacting the adjacent areas. The new mechanical systems were designed not only to accommodate the current project, but to take into account the future needs of the facility. Proteus Group spearheaded master planning, design and engineering of the $5 million renovation project, overcoming considerable design challenges to accommodate new, high-end medical equipment within the existing footprint of the 1950's building. 9-8
ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER PRE / POST OP RECOVERY AND NEURO Project Location: Elk Grove Village, Illinois Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection Engineering
The suite, which contains a highly advanced bi-plane unit designed to treat patients who have suffered a stroke or aneurysms, presented its own design challenges. These included redesigning the existing relatively small space to house the very large bi-plane unit. The existing space was business occupancy, so new mechanical systems were provided. This new technology allows minimally invasive procedures to be completed while physicians use highly detailed scans to diagnose and design treatments for patients. The 20 bay pre and post op recovery area is one of the largest in the Chicago land area.
ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING AND PARKING GARAGE Project Location: Elk Grove Village, Illinois
The second major project to be realized from the Alexian Brothers 2010 Master Plan is a 69,500 sf medical office building and parking structure to the East of the existing Wimmer building. A new entrance for the hospital was created at the ground level, with a large drop-off and valet parking staging area. In the future this linking structure will contain outpatient registration, and a time share suite, as well as radiology, cardiac non-invasive testing and neuro testing that accommodates both inpatients and outpatients.
Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering The MEP design included lighting, drainage and fire protection design for integral parking levels and Fire Protection Engineering
adjacent parking areas. Additionally, shell and core HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems were provided for the business occupancy office
ST. ALEXIUS MEDICAL CENTER MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING AND PARKING GARAGE Project Location: Hoffman Estates, Illinois
The 122,000 sf medical office building and parking structure to the north of the existing West bed tower was designed to accommodate 390 parking spaces on two levels. The new structure serves the existing Doctor’s Office Building One, as well as the new Medical Office Building. The lower level of the medical office building contains an ambulatory surgery center with four operating rooms. The first level contains a comprehensive cancer center for inpatients and outpatients with two linear accelerators for a large medical oncology practice.
Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection Engineering The MEP design included relocation of existing underground electrical utility services, coordinated with ComEd. New manhole and conduit Electrical Engineering systems were provided to accommodate the new building plus future expansion. The building design involved two floors of inpatient occuTechnology Engineering pancy requiring hospital compliant HVAC and emergency power systems. The remaining floors of the building were designed to accommodate business occupancy. The engineering effort for the interior build out of the lower two levels included the design of cancer treatment areas with linear accelerators and also ambulatory surgery areas. 9-9 www.proteusgroup.net
RUSH OAK PARK HOSPITAL SAME DAY SURGERY CENTER Project Location: Oak Park, Illinois Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection Engineering Electrical Engineering
The project involved the interior renovation of an existing administration area, located on the first floor level of the hospital, into a pre-operative prep and post-operative Stage II recovery area for outpatient ambulatory surgical and pain procedure cases. Pre-op and Post-op recovery spaces included 19 recliner bays and 5 stretcher bays. Each recovery bay is equipped with medical gases (vacuum, medical air, oxygen) as well as nurse call and critical power. New program elements included: nurse work spaces (6 to 7 work stations), a medication preparation area, a nourishment station, (3) ADA-compliant patient toilets, clean and soiled utility rooms, a dual function patient interview and manager’s office, and multiple storage areas serving the suite. Outside of the recovery suite, a new information desk was created to replace an existing older desk. Since the current space was used for offices the air handling unit did not comply with I-Occupancy ventilation requirements. A new AHU was installed on the adjacent roof and new supply and return ductwork was provided to serve the project area, ensuring proper filtration and humidification required by the state. A new framing system was created to avoid penetrating the existing building, allowing departments to continue operations during construction. Medical gases, new plumbing and a sprinkler system were also installed within the suite.
RUSH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER 5TH FLOOR ATRIUM - HYBRID CATHETERIZATION LAB PROCEDURE ROOM Project Location: Chicago, Illinois Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection Engineering Electrical Engineering Technology Engineering
The 5 Atrium Cath Lab Project created a hybrid bi-plane angiographic room that supports both pediatric and adult invasive cardiology procedures. The hybrid environment allows for a standard cardiac catheterization procedure to advance directly into an open surgical procedure within the same room if the case deems that a surgical procedure be performed. The room is designed to meet the sterile specifications of an operating room. Additionally, the space includes audio-visual integration systems which allow video images to be transmitted live to locations within and outside the medical center. The Atrium is nearly thirty years old, and the emergency electrical system had capacity issues. In order to support the lab, a reconfiguration of the existing campus generator plant was constructed to alleviate the current load condition. This separate project was designed and constructed simultaneously with the Cath Lab.

This 105,000 sf Medical Office Building / Ambulatory Care Center, was developed by Sterling Bay Development and includes primary and specialty outpatient practice groups such as ENT Specialty Clinics, Rehabilitation Services, Imaging, Sleep Lab, and general medical office suites. Loyola University Medical Center is occupying two floors of this building with their specialty care clinics, outpatient rehabilitation and imaging services, and durable medical equipment sales and rentals.
Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering The Village zoning board dictated very stringent light level uniformity requirements, in addition to pole Fire Protection Engineering height restrictions. Typical metal halide light sources mounted at zoning mandated heights created hot spots, which made uniformity an issue, Electrical Engineering and necessitated the designation of additional pole locations. An LED lighting source alleviated these issues, providing a more uniform distribution, which allowed the pole count to be reduced, while still using the zoning mandated pole height. Add to these benefits the typical LED source values of reduced energy, better fixture efficiency and reduced maintenance and the decision was straightforward. Another unique feature of the Burr Ridge Medical Center is the three story atrium space of over 120,000 cubic feet. These spaces provide attractive spaces for building occupants, but create significant design issues when trying to protect those very occupants from dangerous smoke in the event of a fire. The basis of design was a 5000 BTUs fire. The system uses roof mounted exhaust fans, with make up air provided by electrically operated window actuators located at the ground level. The system is actuated and operated by an addressable fire alarm system, and features a custom firemen’s command panel that allows firemen to manually operate the system once they arrive on site. The panel also allows for periodic testing and reporting of malfunctions remotely. The system was third party commissioned and was successfully tested and passed on the initial testing date.
PROVENA MERCY MEDICAL CENTER INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU) RELOCATION Project Location: Aurora, Illinois Project Services: Mechanical Engineering Plumbing Engineering Fire Protection Engineering Electrical Engineering Lighting Design Technology Engineering
The project included major upgrades to the MEP systems serving the existing forty year old hospital facility, the cost of which was coordinated with the overall project budget. The existing main electrical substation and diesel generator for the facility had become antiquated and difficult to maintain. The building had little or no additional space to accommodate new equipment. A new expanded basement space was created via excavation adjacent to the ICU space to accommodate the new 2500KVA substation and 750kW diesel generator installation. The project included a new fire pump, which resolved several existing compliance issues, as well as a complete replacement of two air handlers in a mechanical penthouse above the project space. 9-11 www.proteusgroup.net
