Celebrating your stories of generosity, impact and legacy

Trauma Survivor

“Providence saved my life.”

Dear Friends:

Welcome to the Spring 2024 edition of Inspire magazine, where we celebrate YOU—and the incredible stories of generosity, impact and legacy that have been the lifeblood of Providence General Foundation for the past three decades.

That’s right, three decades! This year marks our Foundation’s 30th anniversary. That’s 30 years of generosity that has saved lives, fueled medical innovation, and comforted the most vulnerable. During that time, more than $64 million has been invested in helping our growing community become a healthier place to live and work. From the Cymbaluk Medical Tower that’s so prominent in Everett’s skyline to the medical equipment that quietly cradles a tiny preemie, the fingerprints of philanthropy are all over Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and our community.

In this issue, we highlight several examples of philanthropy’s transformative power. One is the Providence Boyden Family Autism Center, which is also celebrating a significant milestone—its 10th year of providing support and care for children and families affected by autism (page 10). We pay tribute to this growing program, as well as the legacy of Rich Boyden, who passed away recently.

The Boyden family’s dedication to the Autism Center has made a difference in the lives of countless families.

In March, we brought back a favorite community event. Portside with Providence (formerly Epicurean Affair) raised more funds than it had in its history. We are so grateful to Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant, Optum Washington, Radia and other sponsors and supporters for investing in Cancer Services at Providence. You can read about this special evening of fun, food and fundraising on page 8.

Speaking of cancer care support, our Foundation has already committed $5 million in 2024 toward upgrading critical equipment for diagnosing and treating cancer at the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership. Your generosity is instrumental in ensuring that our medical professionals have leading-edge technology so they can provide the best possible care to our patients in their fight against cancer.

Additionally, you helped fund two nursing retreats, providing cohorts of Providence Everett nurses with growth, camaraderie and renewal. Read about how this investment in our valued caregivers helps reignite their calling to provide compassionate, expert care.

Finally, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new board members, who you can get to know on page 26. We’re excited to have these exceptional individuals join our mission of supporting Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and the communities we serve.

Once again, thank you for your unwavering generosity and support over the past year—and the past three decades. Together, we’ve accomplished remarkable things, and I am filled with gratitude and hope as we embark on the next chapter of our philanthropic journey.

Fondly,

From Car Crash to College Bound

Providence Everett’s trauma team gives local teen a second chance

It was an ordinary February day for Alyson Mukai, a kindergarten teacher in the Mukilteo School District—until she got a message from the attendance office at Kamiak High School. Her 17-year-old son, Koby, hadn’t shown up for school.

She thought it was odd—maybe even a mistake. She texted him. No response. She contacted his friends. They hadn’t seen him.

Aly used the Find My app, which showed Koby’s phone at a towing company in Everett. Koby’s car had been involved in an accident, they told her. She called police and local hospitals, inquiring about Koby by name. No news. Hours later, she learned Koby was at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (PRMCE)—having emergency brain surgery after arriving as a John Doe.

The accident

Nobody witnessed Koby’s accident, and he has no memory of that day. But his beloved, “modded out” 1999 Honda—his hobby and passion— likely hit a patch of ice, skidded off the Boeing Freeway, and crashed into a tree. First responders found Koby conscious, but unable to speak coherently or identify himself. He had an obvious head injury and was bleeding badly.

In the Emergency Department, the trauma team discovered Koby had a brain bleed caused by a skull fracture. He’d lost a significant amount of blood and needed an emergency transfusion. Rapid imaging found Koby’s most critical injury was blood pooling under his skull, causing pressure on his brain.

“Just like with a stroke, time is of the essence,” said Providence neurosurgeon Dr. Forrest Hsu. “The faster we relieve the pressure, the better the outcome. Had Providence Everett not had trauma capability—had Koby needed to be transferred to Seattle—by that time, he could have been dead.”

Koby was taken to the operating room where Dr. Hsu removed a section of his skull to relieve the pressure and quell the bleeding. The trauma surgery, anesthesia and blood bank teams kept Koby alive during surgery. Then, he was placed into a medically induced coma to help his brain

rest and heal. Dr. Hsu told Aly the first 24 hours were critical to Koby’s survival.

Koby’s family stayed at his bedside, praying and talking to him while he remained in a coma. After four days, the swelling in his brain had improved. Doctors reduced, then discontinued the medicine that kept him in a coma. Slowly, Koby woke up.

“Providence Everett has made significant strides in improving the flow of a trauma patient upon arrival,” said Dr. Jacob Glaser, trauma and critical care surgeon. “All of the effort and improvements by the trauma program aligned to save Koby’s life.”

Koby hit a few bumps as his brain woke up and the neurons began firing normally again. Before long, though, he was endearing himself to Providence caregivers, greeting them with smiles and friendly banter on his frequent walks around the Intensive Care Unit.

After three weeks in PRMCE’s ICU, he went to Seattle Children’s Hospital for a week of inpatient rehabilitation. On March 15, barely a month after his car accident, Koby went home.

Surpassing expectations

Doctors didn’t expect Koby to return to class last school year. But he did. They didn’t think he’d play baseball for at least 6 months. But he played in summer league and even served as captain.

Now, little more than a year after his accident, Koby is back to 100 percent. He has a new Honda he’s itching to trick out, he played

baseball for Kamiak this spring, and he was accepted to every college on his list.

“There’s a lot I want to do,” Koby said. “Travel the world. Become a teacher. Give back. Providence saved my life.”

“Because of Providence, Koby is here today,” Aly said. “It’s amazing how everyone—from surgeons and nurses to social workers– could care so deeply for one person. They give so much to every patient.”

“Koby, his family and all of us who treated him are members of the same community,” said Dr. Glaser, who noted his and Dr. Hsu’s children also attend Kamiak. “This is the reason we need to be excellent. These are our own families and neighbors we may be treating.”

Trauma services at Providence Regional Medical Center

Everett

PRMCE is the only Level II adult trauma center in Snohomish County. Trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency department teams, ICU nurses and multidisciplinary therapists are on-site around the clock to handle complex, traumatic emergencies for patients like Koby.

“Koby’s case is an example of how well our trauma system must work and what a value it is to the community,” said Dr. Hsu. “Without the support of the community and hospital administration, there’d be a gap. Our community is growing and deserves care of this caliber.”

Thanks to generous donors, PRMCE has state-of-the-art equipment and innovative programs that save and enhance lives. To find out how you can support this life-saving care at Providence Everett, call: 425-258-7500 or email PGF@ providence.org

Caring for our Caregivers

When Registered Nurse

Sonia Finrow saw a flyer in the breakroom for a nurse renewal retreat last fall, she was near the end of her rope.

Between the turbulence she felt on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic and the stress of staff turnover, Sonia found herself just going through the motions of her job.

“It was a rough point at that time— nurses were preparing to strike, we’d had lots of ups and downs from COVID and losing coworkers for various reasons—it was taking a toll on everybody,” Sonia said.

The flyer promised an overnight respite retreat at Warm Beach Camp & Conference Center, aimed to improve caregiver well-being and resilience, and promote healthy work relationships.

Two nurse renewal retreats were offered at no cost to Providence nurses this past fall. They were funded by a variety of Providence General Foundation donors, including Waterman Medical Foundation and EverTrust Foundation. Sonia is one of 46 nurses who attended the retreats.

“Nurses are the heart of Providence Everett, and we wanted to show them the community supports them and the important work they do,” said Foundation Board Member and donor Dan Harkins and his wife Pam, who also serves as a member on the Hospital Community Mission Board.

“We were proud to say YES to such a worthwhile investment. When our nurses feel supported, valued and energized, it helps build the core team, enhance leadership and benefits the patients, too.”

A safe space for sharing and learning

“I didn’t know what to expect going into it,” said Sonia. “I wasn’t sure who would be running it, and if I could openly share about my stress without it getting back to my supervisors.”

Sonia was relieved to learn that the retreat was facilitated by an independent party, Harmony Hill—a group of fellow nurses dedicated to supporting caregivers like her. The facilitators explained this was a safe, confidential space.

“Once we realized this is just about us, that they care about us, it was really freeing to receive what they were offering,” Sonia said.

Over two days at the retreat center, the groups of nurses got to know each other, created journals to help express themselves, learned how to identify emotions that lead to stress and how to deal with those emotions.

“The facilitators knew what we were going through and what we were feeling,” Sonia said. “They helped us figure out how to identify what we can and can’t control, and how to keep those feelings from controlling us.”

The retreats go beyond yoga and mindfulness. Numerous studies have shown that investments in caregiver well-being not only reduce burnout and staff turnover, but also reduce medical errors and adverse patient events, improving patient safety and health outcomes.

By giving nurses the tools to care for themselves and better communicate, collaborate, and connect with their peers and

patients, they can play a vital role in improving the overall care setting for everyone.

The retreats also provide something harder to measure: Purpose.

Renewed purpose

Sonia says the retreat gave her the space and tools to rediscover her calling for her profession, and she left with a new fire for her work.

“When I care for women having babies who haven’t had the support or chances in life to find their confidence as a mom, I know why I’m there. Being able to empower them, to help them see they CAN do this, and seeing how that impacts their whole family—it’s something I don’t take lightly.”

Sonia isn’t the only one who left with a renewed commitment to nursing. Nearly every nurse reported a reconnection to their passion for service, and their sense of well-being improved. Sonia says the tools she learned at the retreat have not only helped her manage stress at work, but also the stress at home that comes with raising two teenagers.

“I am so grateful for this experience— a big thank you to the Foundation and its supporters for funding this,” Sonia said.

“It is making an impact on a nurse who makes a difference for hundreds of patients. The ripple effect is huge.”

Community Supports Cancer Services at Providence

Supporters give more than $195,000, the most ever raised in our 34-year partnership with Anthony’s HomePort Everett

Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant has been a longtime supporter of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, providing their restaurant, delectable food and wine and top-notch wait staff for an annual fundraiser.

As Chairs Dan and Shannon Leach helped bring back the event from a five-year hiatus due to COVID, the former Epicurean Affair was reimagined as Portside with Providence to better showcase the event’s host.

This year’s event focused on raising critical funds for Cancer Services at Providence’s Regional Cancer Partnership, and it raised more money than ever before! Part of that record-breaking generosity included a special fund-a-need paddle raise in honor of Anthony’s staff for their outstanding service and food.

We are so grateful for the sponsors, event co-chairs and attendees for a magical night of raising funds for the Cancer Partnership.

Celebrating a Decade of Life-changing Autism Services

The Boyden Family Autism Center was the first of its kind in our region when it opened in 2014. It offered a full range of diagnostic services and therapeutic treatment for children on the autism spectrum, along with essential family education and support programs. Since its debut, it has become a haven for hundreds of families.

Over the past decade, the need for services to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has only grown. When the Center opened, the Centers for Disease Control estimated about 1 in 68 children had ASD. Last year, the agency released new estimates closer to 1 in 36. But advocates stress the uptick is not due to an “autism epidemic”—rather, we’re getting better at recognizing what was always there.

That recognition and timely diagnosis is crucial for children with ASD and their families. With a diagnosis at the Autism Center, families can begin to pursue individualized behavioral therapies and programs to help them better navigate and advocate for their unique needs. It also unlocks resources outside the center, such as Individualized Education Plans at school.

A $1.2 million expansion to the Center in 2021, funded entirely by Providence General Foundation donors, propelled the Center to nearly double its capacity and shorten the years-long wait lists for diagnostic services. An additional clinical psychologist, onboarded this winter, is also helping reduce the wait for families, currently between 7 and 16 months, depending on the child’s age.

“The need continues to rise for all of the services we provide,” says the Autism Center’s Manager Dr. Jill McDaniel. “Especially for our treatment programs, where families now face another 6-9 month wait for therapy, even after they have received a diagnosis.”

While the wait can still feel overwhelming for families reaching for a lifeline, it’s about half the wait as other treatment centers in the region. The Center has also added a Family Support and Transition Coordinator “to help families navigate services available at Providence and beyond.”

“Parents can easily become overwhelmed trying to navigate the complexities of care options, waitlists, and insurance obstacles,” says Dr. McDaniel. “Adding a position designed specifically to assist families with care coordination and facilitating access to community resources helps us better ease the way for them.”

With 2024 marking its 10th year serving our community, the expert team of caregivers at the Center is grateful for the years of support from the Foundation and its many donors who have invested in this much-needed community resource.

“Philanthropic support has made our growth and expansion possible over this last decade, and will continue to be essential—for years to come—for the many children and families we serve.”

A Lifetime of Generosity

Richard Boyden (1942-2024)

Reflecting on a decade of life-changing services at the Autism Center, Dr. McDaniel says none of it would have been possible without the Boyden family’s unwavering support and the community they inspired.

Richard and Judy Boyden made transformational gifts of more than $1 million to open the center that now bears their name, and they have continued to fuel its growth over the years.

For them, it’s personal. They’ve experienced the challenges of getting a diagnosis and receiving care for their grandchild who has autism. They’ve also experienced the benefits children get when they receive the kind of tailored support the Center provides.

“The Boydens have been tireless advocates for this work and our community,” Dr. McDaniel says. “Yes, they’ve been incredibly generous financially, but also with their compassion for neurodivergent individuals. They’ve continued to support the Autism Center through thick and thin—they’ve been incredible partners and leaders in this area. I can’t thank them enough.”

Families at the Center are also incredibly grateful for what the Boydens have done. When Richard passed away earlier this year, children and families put together a poster decorated with handprints and messages of gratitude for the man who impacted so many families with his compassion and generosity.

“He leaves behind such a legacy,” Dr. McDaniel says. “For years—even generations—he will continue to touch countless lives.”

Festival Brings Community Together for Children’s Services

Festival of Trees kicked off the season of giving with astounding generosity from supporters, raising more than $1.6 million for Children’s Services at Providence Everett.

The week at Tulalip Resort’s Orca Ballroom began with designers transforming trees and wreaths into awe-inspiring works of art. Their creations were revealed to thousands of attendees of all ages at the free Community Day & Teddy Bear Celebration, with Optum as the presenting sponsor. The day featured the beautiful trees and wreaths, of course, plus local singing groups, cookies & cocoa, photos with Santa, crafts, and the ever-popular Tim Noah. Providence General Children’s Association’s Teddy Bear Store was also a big hit nearly selling out of all the furry friends.

On Gala evening, guests were greeted by Chairs Joe & Ashley Gaffney. Guests strolled among the trees and wreaths, enjoying appetizers and champagne before the dinner and exciting live auction commenced. The night included a special tribute to the sixth annual Spirit of Festival recipient Carol Bjorg and her late husband Gordy, recognizing their 30-plus years of support.

Then, the magic really began! Bidding wars for some of the most sought-after trips and beautiful trees got the crowd energized. The largest auction purchase of the night came from Presenting Sponsor Tulalip Tribes as the winning bidders of the Christmas Gift tree—at a whopping $22,000! They donated the tree made of more than 500 plush animals to Providence’s Emergency Department.

The generosity continued in the special fund-a-need portion of the evening, supporting Pediatric Behavioral Health Services. Providence General Children’s Association was the first to raise a paddle at the $50,000 level, joined by Jay and Terry Ackley, Carol Bjorg, Marshall and Katherine Cymbaluk, Steve and Carol Klein, and Buzz and Carol Rodland—the most donors ever to give at that level at the event.

Joe & Ashley Gaffney kept the generosity going through the very end, matching the first 80 paddles at the $250 level. Collectively, the crowd donated $719,000 during the fund-a-need portion of the evening— a testament to the tremendous community support for our children and teens who need behavioral health services. Festival is always a festive and fun event, but no one loses sight of the reason we gather: It’s all to help our community’s children!

Your Giving in 2023

In 2023, Providence General Foundation received more than $2.9 million in new gifts or commitments from donors who support the work and Mission of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. This generosity allowed investments in new medical equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), behavioral health support for adults and children, patient support services, community health and other initiatives that advance local health care and serve the most vulnerable in our community. Every gift helps elevate health care in our hospital and community. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Honoring Mila: A Gift of Love to Camp Prov

One

family’s story of gratitude, grief and giving back

In her seven years of life, Mila Yan inspired her friends, family and educators to create a lasting legacy that will brighten the lives of many local children.

Having experienced a birth injury, Mila developed significant disabilities and required a level of care and support that made finding activities and interactions with other children a daunting task for her parents, Justin and Gracielle Yan.

“We found it challenging to find community spaces that felt fun and inclusive for a kid with as many needs as Mila,” said Gracielle. “Camp Prov was the first place that wasn’t too afraid to take on our feisty girl.”

Camp Prov is a summer day camp for children with special health care needs and their siblings. Campers are matched with a one-to-one counselor or “buddy,” so they get individualized attention and help, if

needed, to participate in all the fun activities camp provides.

Mila’s Camp Prov experience was filled with milestones, both big and small. From her first splash in a public pool to the exhilaration of going down a slide for the first time, each experience was a testament to the camp’s commitment to providing an inclusive environment for all children. “Mila had a really hard life, but Camp Prov gave her a sense of joy and fun,” said Gracielle.

In January 2023, the Yan family experienced an immense loss when Mila passed away at the age of seven. Her memorial service was held at Forest Park—right where Camp Prov is each summer. To honor their daughter, as well as the impact Camp Prov had on her life, the Yans invited people to donate to the camp where Mila felt truly included and embraced for who she was.

“Our family and friends donated these funds in Mila’s memory so that other kids like her can enjoy Camp Prov as much as she did,” said Gracielle.

Friends and family rallied together to contribute in Mila’s honor. Justin’s employer then matched the donations—and the total gift to Camp Prov exceeded $10,000.

The Yan family’s gift of love not only honors Mila’s memory, but also means the spirit of inclusion and joy she experienced at Camp Prov will be available to many more children for years to come.

Camp Prov has been providing camp experiences and special memories for children and families since 1996. It would not be possible without dedicated volunteers and generous donations to Providence General Children’s Association and Providence General Foundation.

Providence Everett’s trauma program continues to be one of the busiest in the state. We recently added four trauma stretchers to better support trauma care in the emergency department, thanks to your support. The new stretchers help care for patients more quickly, allowing for things like x-rays and getting weight for medication dosages without moving or lifting the patient. *deceased

Early breast cancer detection thanks to Pink Ribbon Row

We’re excited to announce that Providence’s Comprehensive Breast Center is the first in the Northwest to offer a personalized early detection and genetic evaluation program to measure breast cancer risk—and begin managing that risk right away. Support from the Pink Ribbon Row event is helping fund special equipment so women found to be at higher risk for breast cancer can quickly get additional, enhanced screening to detect cancer early. Thank you, rowers— you are saving lives!
