Makes A Difference! YOUR SUPPORT
Sellabration Gala supports the following Providence Little Company of Mary programs and services: CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY (COPA) provides an opportunity during the school day and after school for students to practice skills and access support services designed to change their physical activity behaviors. The program serves all children ages 7-14 years, at 10 different school sites, and makes special efforts to include those who are overweight or obese. The after-school program is an eight-week rotation throughout the school year and includes special events for parents and children to participate together in interactive workshops that promote physical activity. Emphasis is placed on activities that are low cost and easy for the family to do at home. THE EDMOND R. AND VIRGINIA G. DOAK CENTER FOR PALLIATIVE CARE supports a team of professionals who provide care and pain management to patients and support to families facing a serious or life-threatening illness. Directed by Glen Komatsu, M.D., this palliative care team of medical, nursing, social services and spiritual care professionals offers assistance with treatment choices and decisions, individual and family counseling, emotional and spiritual support, and end-of-life care both in and out of the hospital. PARTNERS FOR HEALTHY KIDS mobile pediatric clinic has cared for more than 40,000 children since 1994 within the communities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, San Pedro and Wilmington. This traveling clinic provides medical services for eight elementary schools, one middle school and one high school weekly, providing underserved and uninsured children with free diagnosis and treatment of acute medical conditions, immunizations, health education and health screenings. In 2011, over 3,700 children passed through the doors of the Partners clinic and all services were provided at no cost to the families.
4
VASEK POLAK HEALTH CLINIC was created in 2007 to meet the primary care needs of uninsured and underinsured adults. The clinic offers an appropriate alternative to emergency room care for non-urgent conditions and a “medical home for adults living in and around Hawthorne, particularly those with chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Support includes preventative care, health lectures and multi-session classes for people experiencing chronic illness. Number of patient visits are growing and in early 2012 reached 700 visits per month.

2012 DISTINGUISHED PHYSICIAN SPIRIT OF HEALING AWARD
Glen I. Komat su, M.D. Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance
6
Glen Komatsu, M.D., is a 3rd generation Japanese American, born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Glen grew up on a vegetable farm where his parents taught him the value of hard work and humility. He attended the University of Arizona for both undergraduate studies and medical school. After graduating from medical school, Glen chose the field of pediatrics, then the subspecialty of neonatology for his residency and fellowship training at the University of California, Irvine, and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. After brief stints in Honolulu (where he met his future wife, Joyce) and back at Long Beach Memorial, he settled at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance as the Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Newborn Services in 1985. Pursuing his career-long interest in bioethics, he co-chaired the first Bioethics Advisory Committee at Little Company of Mary in 1990, and he continues in that role today. In 2003, he became interested in the emerging field of Palliative Care. At the encouragement of then Chief Executive Blair Contratto, he applied for and was accepted to a fellowship in Adult Palliative Care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School. With a grant from the James Lester Endowment in addition to Blair’s commitment to starting a palliative care program, Glen returned in 2005 to lead the adult palliative care consultation service which has become the Edmond R. & Virginia G. Doak Center for Palliative Care. His interest in caring for children continued in assuming the medical directorship of Providence TrinityKids Care, the only pediatric hospice and palliative care program in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In 2007, Glen was appointed Chief Medical Officer of Providence TrinityCare Hospice, one of the oldest non-profit hospice organizations in Los Angeles. Glen could not do this work without the ongoing support and love from his family: wife, Joyce; daughter, Emi; and son, Eric. He also acknowledges the thousands of patients, their families and the many colleagues who have taught him the art and craft of medicine, who have allowed him to work with them and who have acknowledged him with the ultimate title “Dr. Komatsu. Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation is proud to honor Glen Komatsu, M.D., with the Distinguished Physician Spirit of Healing Award.

A Message from
GLEN I. KOMATSU, M.D.
Dear Colleagues, Friends and Guests: My grandparents immigrated from Japan in the early 1900’s seeking a better world. Their children, my parents, were the second generation, the first to speak English and establish themselves as Americans. World War II took away many of their rights but not their determination, perseverance and spirit, especially to give us, their children, the third generation, a chance to be more successful and to contribute more to society. My father was a farmer in Phoenix, Arizona. He and my mother taught me the importance of education, hard work and humility. They gave me a chance to flourish in school at every level. They gave me the chance to go to college and medical school to become a doctor. First, Little Company of Mary and now Providence has given me unlimited opportunities to grow, flourish and contribute, first as a neonatologist and now as a palliative care and hospice physician. I am extremely fortunate and blessed to be part of this community and share in this work. This Sellabration is not about me but the vision that we collectively share, the Mission in which we collectively believe and the care which we collectively provide. Sincerely,
Glen Komatsu, M.D.

2012 DISTINGUISHED PHYSICIAN SPIRIT OF HEALING AWARD
Phyllis R. Monroe, M.D. Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro
10
Phyllis Monroe, M.D., exemplifies the qualities we all hope to find in our personal physician – compassion, dedication and excellence. Devoted to the well-being of each patient, she has cared for our community for more than 30 years. Dr. Monroe grew up in Lunada Bay, attending Marymount High School. Her passion for biological science was an early and consistent strength. In 1966, she graduated “with great distinction” from Stanford University where she was Phi Beta Kappa and elected to Sigma XI, the national Scientific Honorary Society for undergraduate research. In 1971, Dr. Monroe earned a medical degree from Stanford, followed by an internal medicine residency and fellowship at Yale. She won the respect of her colleagues and the heart of young Assistant Professor of Cardiology David Cannom. Married in 1974, they returned to Southern California. As a board-certified internist, Phyllis cared for some of the most vulnerable patients in Los Angeles. She served as attending physician at Martin Luther King Jr. General Hospital and USC Medical School, and as a primary care consultant at Drew Postgraduate School of Medicine in South Central Los Angeles. In 1979, Dr. Monroe joined San Pedro Community Hospital and was instrumental in mentoring general practice residents in the art and science of primary care. Her devotion and impact are still evident – 12 of those physicians remain serving our community. In addition, Dr. Monroe chaired the Bioethics/Human Investigation Committee, the Board of Directors Strategic Planning Committee and the Trustee Council. Dr. Monroe served on the Board of Directors of Harbor/UCLA Research and Education Institute (LA Biomedical Research Institute). With a private practice in San Pedro, patients have sought Dr. Monroe’s care from throughout the South Bay. Personal relationships, continuity of care and dedication to her patients are the foundation of her work. Personally, Phyllis enjoys playing the piano and gardening. She especially cherishes time with her family, including three accomplished daughters and four grandchildren. Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation is proud to honor Phyllis Monroe, M.D., with the Distinguished Physician Spirit of Healing Award.

A Message from
PHYLLIS R. MONROE, M.D.
Dear Colleagues, Friends and Guests: Medicine is a career of service. The Sisters of Little Company of Mary have modeled a life based on service and have given our two hospitals a legacy which we all aspire to continue. Care is given by all staff and employees who follow the commitment of these wonderful women. Thus, I want to recognize our religious, our medical staffs, nurses and employees who are the backbone of the healing and comfort which we strive to bring. At its best, the practice of medicine is a most humanizing experience. Physicians see patients at times of crisis, pain and challenge. The opportunity to share these experiences forges a bond which brings patient and healer together in a unique and powerful relationship. This work requires a great deal of the physician, but it returns much more. I came to San Pedro in 1978 to help start a Family Practice Residency. I had the deep joy of training 36 primary care physicians, a third of whom continue to practice in the South Bay area. I have had the privilege and joy of caring for patients in San Pedro over 30 years, in private practice during the last 24. My patients have comprised multiple three-generation families. They have been economically, socially and culturally diverse - like the community of San Pedro. My patients and I have enjoyed the gift of continuity of care - care over time and in both the inpatient and outpatient setting - which is becoming increasingly rare. I have been most blessed in these relationships. None of this has been possible without the support of family and friends. To my husband David, my daughters and the men they have chosen, my deepest thanks for taking this journey with me. Providence Little Company of Mary has made it possible for me to practice my art and craft among outstanding professionals in a caring, patient-centered environment. Sincerely, Phyllis Monroe, M.D. 13

Silent
A new twist for silent auction bidding this year! BidPal is a handheld device that allows wireless bidding. Your own personal BidPal allows you to: • Bid anytime and from anywhere during the silent auction • See all item information and current bid status • Receive outbid alerts and re-bid • Personalize your “watch” list • View items won If you need assistance, please look for a BidPal expert wearing a green BidPal lanyard. There will be one closing time for the Silent auction. Closing time will be announced at the event and via BidPal device. If you are the winner of an auction item, the BidPal device will notify you. After closing, BidPal devices will be collected by volunteers during dinner.
Live
All items will be bid for on a competitive basis by means of displaying your bid number card. The auctioneer will determine who made the first bid in case two or more people bid simultaneously. Once the auctioneer has declared “sold,” the sale is final, and the person making the final bid will sign a receipt indicating acceptance of the bid and the bid price.

Michael Hunn, Senior VP Regional Chief Executive Providence Health & Services Southern California
Thanks Dr. Glen Komatsu & Dr. Phyllis Monroe for creating a healing environment and embracing our mission and core values.

Congratulations Glen! The Mission of Providence TrinityCare Hospice is: “To know me, Care for me, and Ease my way.” No words are more appropriate to describe the work of this year’s honoree, Dr. Glen Komatsu, than those heartfelt beliefs. If a doctor’s oath commits him to the art of healing, how does our Dr. Glen Komatsu navigate the emotional complexities of his patients as the Director of Palliative Care? In laymen’s terms, Palliative Care eases the transition from this life to the next plane, whatever that may be. We find ourselves constantly in awe of our friend, Glen Komatsu. When we consider the idea that winning for him is seemingly hollow when framed by the inevitable end of life. His efforts as a physician would cause a lesser man to be frustrated, angry, and disappointed. But on the contrary, Dr. Komatsu has been imbued with a kind of Zen for the work. He knows the patients, and his instinct and pain management is appreciated by them and their loved ones. Glen is a 24/7 doc with hands on, heart attentive, and mind completely engaged. That engagement - that unique human capacity to involve himself - is what allows him to “ease the way” for patients and their families as they cross the Rubicon to whatever may follow. Glen, for the Sullivans and so many others, you stand as a Beacon of Hope and a comfort to all of us who want to know that someone will be there at the end of our journey to “know us, care for us, and most importantly, ease our way.” With the greatest admiration and respect, we congratulate you on your special night of tribute so well deserved.
Tom & Patty Sullivan
