As you will see in the pages that follow, our friends and community partners continue to strongly support our ministries with gifts that directly benefit both our caregivers and their patients.

We could not be more grateful for your continuing trust and kindness.

Our attention is strongly fixed on the future of our medical centers and hospice services amid the changing landscape of health care in our nation. You can be assured that Providence will continue its 157-year history of responding to the needs of those we serve, especially the poor and vulnerable, by seeking to always provide the best compassionate care at the most affordable cost.

How will we do it? We’re committed to whole-person health through our strategy of creating healthier communities, together. Providence is becoming much more active in primary health care and the overall well-being of the communities we serve – improving health at the local level through preventive care and education.

Our foundations are responding to this approach by continuing their vital support of our local ministries’ investments in the infrastructure, equipment and training that our caregivers need in order to be successful. In this, our first regional foundation annual report, it is clear philanthropy continues to make the difference for our patients through cardiovascular and cancer care, emergency and end-of-life care, and our care of children and young adults through our hospitals and community benefit programs.

“I was hooked!” So begins the story of Teresa Uribe McGilvray’s passion for philanthropy.

As one of three children born to Javier and Maria Uribe – all at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center – Teresa recalls attending every fundraising fashion show, gala, awards dinner and physician lecture with her mother, a dedicated member of the Providence Saint Bernard Steven WALLACE JosephKLEIN, Foundation board of governors since 1992.

Executive Director/ MD, MBA Teresa was asked to chair the Saint Joseph’s Twist Vice President Chief Executive and Shout Gala and it changed life.

One of her Providenceher Holy Cross Providence Holy Cross Foundation Medical Center dearest friends, Diane Casey, attended the gala wearing a hat to “hide” her head which was balding from the chemotherapy she was undergoing. The event was a success but Diane passed away a few days after her 49th birthday, leaving three young sons behind.

Coincidentally, the original homeowners, Maria and Javier Uribe, were instrumental in the development of the cancer center and had hosted several fundraisers at that same home more than 37 years ago. Lynette and Mark were proud to come full circle in honoring the Uribe’s legacy in their friend Teresa’s childhood home.

A Grateful Stephen Dixon...

A good place to say good-bye

Steve knew his wife’s battle with cancer had weakened her when he took her to the emergency room at Holy Cross in February. Brenda, 61, had been diagnosed four years earlier with aggressive stage-four breast cancer, which had metastasized to the bone. There had been other trips to the emergency room, but Steve knew this one was different. It was still a shock to hear the doctor say Brenda’s condition had significantly worsened and she was nearing the end-of-life.

Marwa Kilani, MD, medical director of palliative care at Providence Holy Cross, secured a large room for Brenda on the oncology floor so her family and friends could visit and be comfortable. “To us the room was beautiful – with three windows and a couch – and sometimes we had 15 people visiting at a time,” recalls Steve. “A group from The Master’s College came to sing and pray for her.

Brenda was a gifted musician and taught music at the college. She loved making an investment in the lives of young people.”

Love, Laughter and Tears

Steve and Brenda’s three grown children – Megan, Matthew and Micah – were also there. Perhaps Brenda’s greatest joy was the presence of six month-old grandbaby Isaiah (the son of Matthew and wife Sarah). “Some of the nurses who had previously cared for Brenda came to see her,” says

A Grateful Stephen Dixon...

A good place to say good-bye

Steve knew his wife’s battle with cancer had weakened her when he took her to the emergency room at Holy Cross in February. Brenda, 61, had been diagnosed four years earlier with aggressive stage-four breast cancer, which had metastasized to the bone. There had been other trips to the emergency room, but Steve knew this one was different. It was still a shock to hear the doctor say Brenda’s condition had significantly worsened and she was nearing the end-of-life.

Marwa Kilani, MD, medical director of palliative care at Providence Holy Cross, secured a large room for Brenda on the oncology floor so her family and friends could visit and be comfortable. “To us the room was beautiful – with three windows and a couch – and sometimes we had 15 people visiting at a time,” recalls Steve. “A group from The Master’s College came to sing and pray for her.

Brenda was a gifted musician and taught music at the college. She loved making an investment in the lives of young people.”

Love, Laughter and Tears

Steve and Brenda’s three grown children – Megan, Matthew and Micah – were also there. Perhaps Brenda’s greatest joy was the presence of six month-old grandbaby Isaiah (the son of Matthew and wife Sarah). “Some of the nurses who had previously cared for Brenda came to see her,” says

Two South Bay Families Invest in Cardiovascular Excellence Nearly all American families are impacted by the effects of cardiovascular disease. Two South Bay families decided to do something about it.

Philanthropists Stanley and Maureen Moore and the Scharffenberger family each made important contributions of $1 million to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance. Both gifts provide significant support toward the medical center’s $35 million campaign slated to enhance cardiovascular services.

The Moore and Scharffenberger Families

Partnering with Providence Little Company of Mary was an essential for the Moores. The Torrance hospital served as the birthplace for their family.

Now, in turn, the Moore’s generosity helps to ensure the hospital’s vision for a world-class cardiovascular center.

“Maureen and I have a sentimental connection to the hospital as all four of our children and all five of our grandchildren were born here,” Stan Moore says. “We also wanted to give back out of respect and admiration for two physicians who have impacted our lives, Dr. Mike Del Vicario and Dr. John Armato.”

The Scharffenberger family moved to the South Bay in 1962. While the family primarily focuses its

philanthropy on university education, they decided to make an historic gift – the single largest gift made by their family foundation – to Providence Little Company of Mary in gratitude for the excellent care provided here. “It would not be an exaggeration to say that Providence Little Company of Mary and its fantastic doctors, nurses and staff saved our mother’s life two years ago,” says family spokesman George Scharffenberger. “Through that experience, we came to realize that Providence is more than a hospital – it is a vital part of our community. Health care services are provided free of charge and no child is turned away.

The Philanthropy

Launched by a founding gift from the Crail-Johnson Foundation, Partners for Healthy Kids has inspired generosity from foundations and private donors alike. Retired businessman and philanthropist John Gogian and his wife Billee – who was raised in modest circumstances in San Pedro – were touched by the need and responded with more than $2 million in gifts. “Billee asked me to help out,” says John, “and like a good husband, I said, ‘Yes, dear.’”

The program is a testimony to the compassion and responsiveness of Providence Little Company of Mary to the greater community it serves.

The Nurses

Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Pat Dahlberg, NP, has dedicated over 18 years of her career to the Partners program. Pat serves as the clinic’s lead practitioner, administering immunizations, treating and assessing illnesses and injuries, and providing referrals for acute and specialty care. She works closely with school nurses from Los Angeles Unified and Lawndale school districts to identify the children who need care and their parents who may benefit from other community resources.

Pat Dahlberg, NP, recalls one such case where she has watched one of her youngest patients – a six-month-old infant named Emily – blossom into a vivacious 12-year-old who has been at the top of her class in elementary school and who just enrolled in junior high school as an honors student.

Emily’s first visit came when the van parked at Barton Hills Elementary School in San Pedro in 2002.

A second generation finds their passion “I was hooked!”

So begins the story of Teresa Uribe McGilvray’s passion for philanthropy.

As one of three children born to Javier and Maria Uribe – all at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center – Teresa recalls attending every fundraising fashion show, gala, awards dinner and physician lecture with her mother, a dedicated member of the Providence Saint Joseph Foundation board of governors since 1992.

Teresa was asked to chair the Saint Joseph’s Twist and Shout Gala and it changed her life. One of her dearest friends, Diane Casey, attended the gala wearing a hat to “hide” her head which was balding from the chemotherapy she was undergoing. The event was a success but Diane passed away a few days after her 49th birthday, leaving three young sons behind.

That was the turning point for Teresa – the “hook” to become the second generation of Uribe philanthropists. “I knew one thing. I was inspired to help Dr. Mena have what he needed to fight cancer.

I was asked to be on the foundation board of governors in 2009 and later when the opportunity 24

came to form a group to support the Disney Family Cancer Center, I jumped in, bringing my friends with me.”

Others were inspired to join the newly formed committee, Friends of the Disney Family Cancer Center, because of the care provided by Raul Mena, MD, medical director of cancer services. Laura Pistotnik, current chair of the Friends, was overwhelmed by Dr. Mena’s kindness as her mother was dying with cancer. “My dad was struggling as my mother was nearing the end-of-life. Dr. Mena drove out to my parents’ home in Woodland Hills on the July 4th weekend to help. It was an amazing act of kindness.”

The Friends of the Disney Family Cancer Center committee started with five members and has quickly grown to fifteen. The group is nearing their $100,000 fundraising goal for 2014, utilizing smaller events and e-mail appeals to promote giving and to raise awareness of the center and its services.

In April, in recognition of oral, head and neck cancer awareness month, committee members Lynette Sikand and Ellen Lynch hosted an event at Lynette and Mark Sikand’s home Casa Del Cielo in

patients working hard to triumph over cancer. It is a reflection of second-generation volunteer Teresa Uribe McGilvray’s commitment: “I just want to make a difference in this life, make someone’s life not have to be cut short, help make people comfortable when they are sick and vulnerable. I believe, through my mother Maria, my dear lost friends and family and the people of Providence Saint Joseph, I have found my passion.”

Seth Samuels Working towards a better community is a sentiment which resonates throughout the story of Seth Samuels, a smart, dedicated and passionate 25-year-old Columbia University summa cum laude graduate with a degree in urban planning. Currently enrolled in a dual advanced degree program in law and urban planning at UCLA, Seth credits his parents Sandy and Claudia Samuels as role models for his commitment to the city of Los Angeles and interest in working for change.

The art and science of medicine

Significant chronic pain issues stemming from a severe roadside assault two years ago are what prompted Seth’s appreciation for Providence Tarzana Medical Center and its critical role as a place of healing in the community. “My health has been debilitating and I’m trying not to allow chronic pain to dominate my life,” says Seth. “I have learned that medicine is not an exact science. It requires a special touch, a bedside manner that is more of an art. The people at Providence Tarzana have that touch; they are both sympathetic and empathetic.”

Seth’s mother, Claudia Samuels, Ph.D., a member of the Providence Tarzana Foundation Board of Governors, credits radiologist Jerry Einziger, MD,

and surgeon Douglas Morrow, MD, with the expert care which helped to diagnose Seth’s need for abdominal surgery – a surgery that would prove to be the first step in Seth’s journey to regain his health. “With God’s help, and the consummate care of Dr. Einziger, Dr. Morrow and our wonderful medical center, Seth is on his way to healing,” says Claudia. “The efforts of the hospital have created a world-class experience, which the entire Samuels family has been privileged to partake of, first hand.”

A Heart For Hospice

Philip and Sandra Rowe Maier Establish Endowment for Palliative Care Sandra Rowe Maier has devoted nearly a quarter century of volunteer service to the advancement of end-of life care. In 2013, following 22 years of volunteer leadership, annual contributions and special event sponsorships, Sandra and husband Philip made the decision to establish the Philip and Sandra Rowe Maier Endowment for Palliative Care, a significant gift in support of Providence TrinityCare Hospice. In recognition for their commitment, they were honored in 2014 with the Glass Family Award for Philanthropy, Leadership and Service.

Inspired by the dedication of others

In 1992, end-of-life care was on Sandra’s mind, as both of her parents had experienced a life-limiting cancer diagnosis without the benefit of hospice.

They died within two years of each other. During that time, Mildred Marx invited Sandra to join a hospice advisory committee, and Sandra’s commitment began. Sandra counts Mildred and Jacky Glass as her mentors, and, of course, “Dr. Glen” (Glen Komatsu, M.D., chief medical officer of TrinityCare Hospice). Philip explains, “Hospice and palliative care captured Sandy’s attention. I like to joke that I’m riding on Sandy’s coattails, so TrinityCare has become my passion, too!”

An expert in both hospice and palliative care, Dr. Komatsu appreciates the unique understanding and generosity of the Maiers. “Their latest, most generous gift shows their level of understanding of

our changing field and the evolving needs of patients and families,” says Komatsu. “Phil and Sandy appreciate hospice but understand how palliative care fills a huge gap in our health care system. The Maiers are determined to contribute to fill that gap and help us serve the needs of our patients.”

The Institute for Human Caring

Sandra hopes their endowment gift will help elevate “whole person” care to become common practice.

“We really want to help promote new medicine on a national and global level,” says Sandra. “We feel like TrinityCare can do that with the establishment of the Institute for Human Caring.” Sandra is president and CEO of Jet Forwarding, Inc., and credits her brother David and wife Carole for their contributions in support of Providence TrinityCare Hospice through Jet Forwarding.

The Institute’s focus goes beyond the medical aspects of illness to encompass the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families. At the Institute in the Douglas and J. Glass Family Center, caregivers from all disciplines are trained to be more effective. “TrinityCare’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains work with the patients and families to have an honest conversation,” says Sandra. “Hopefully out of that conversation, a plan is developed to manage symptoms and control pain, either toward recovery or to make a smooth transition to hospice.”

Strizka As a benefactor and Los Angeles businessman Jaromir Strizka made an

extraordinary gift of $2.3 million in 2013. Strizka has provided more than a quarter-century of consistent

support, beginning with his first gift of $150 in 1987, followed by annual gifts and important contributions to the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s neuroscience and cancer campaigns.

Born in Prague in 1919 in (then) Czechoslovakia, he moved to Hollywood,

California, where he founded European Crafts, a successful wholesale distributor, importer, and exporter of

musical instruments and accessories. From its inception, the company had an international identity and drew upon Mr. Strizka’s heritage in an ongoing worldwide search for new and unusual musical products – from

stringed instruments to pitchpipes.

An athlete for most of his life, Mr. Strizka was an excellent pole vaulter until the tender age of 81 when his interests turned to other pursuits.

His latest milestone gift holds significance as it is designated to benefit Providence Saint Joseph’s areas of greatest

need, eliminating restrictions and allowing the healthcare leadership to make the best decisions regarding the impact of the gift. “This is my hospital,” says Strizka, “and I want it to be the best it can be.

I give because it is the right thing to do.”
