PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL 2011-2012 APRIL 2012 Message from Head of School, Mr. Joe Sciuto Dear Providence Families, On Friday, March 30th, Providence held our Alumni Career Day. The day was a celebration of the Providence High School community and the legacy of the Sisters of Providence. We are so proud of our alumni, who gave their valuable time back to their alma mater. It is evident they were indeed prepared for the future when they graduated from Providence High Schoolthey are bright, driven, and moral leaders in their fields who are positively contributing to the society around them.

Career Day began with a keynote address from Judge Philip Soto, the Uncle of current freshman David White. Judge Soto works closely with local law enforcement agencies, schools, and local leaders to develop and maintain clear goals and an understanding as to how to best serve the youth of the communities of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. We were so fortunate to have had Judge Soto as our guest! Our current students then went to three different smaller sessions, to listen to and draw inspiration from the stories and lessons of our alumni. Our students were engaged with the alumni by asking a lot of questions and learning about many different careers. Our current students may not know “what they want to be when they grow up,” but I know that on this day they recognized the importance of a Providence education. I hope that our current students will one day return to PHS as Alumni and share about their careers and lives to inspire future Pioneers! Yours in Providence, Joe Sciuto Head of School YOU BELONG HERE.

Letter from Dean of Students, Mr. Dennis Bullock Dear Parents, Easter Break is upon us, and I know we all welcome it. Upon our return on April 16th, the year will move at an accelerated pace, with a great many events on the horizon. The week we return, Spirit Week will immediately commence, culminating with Pioneer Day. The Grading Period will end on April 27th (the very next week), and PHS’ annual GALA is on Saturday, April 28th. And the ball keeps on rolling from there. However, please keep in mind that during that same busy week, there will be a Parent Meeting on April 25th here on campus—please make plans to be here with us. This meeting will be important for all parents— much key information will be passed along. For parents of underclassmen, a great deal of information will be disseminated by the Counseling Department regarding Naviance, a new tool being utilized to both track and assist your children in their quest to move into the realm of college. In addition to that, a more specific letter will be distributed from me on the upcoming uniform changes. Many of the incoming freshmen parents saw samples during their registration on Saturday and there seems to be a very positive buzz! Senior parents, the April 25th Parent Meeting will be particularly important for you to attend as we will go over all of the activities leading up to your children’s graduation. We will meet separately from the other class parents, and I am sure we will have much to discuss—activity will be frenetic (well, more frenetic than normal). Fasten your seatbelts! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at 818-846-8141 ext. 204, or Dennis.Bullock@providencehigh.org. God Bless. Happy Easter to all.
The Providence Gala is Saturday, April 28th at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake. It promises to be a fun and spirited evening, including a gourmet dinner, drinks, a silent and live auction, and live music from the band Night Shift. Providence is proud to honor community supporters Susan and Victor Georgino at the event. And, best of all, 100% of proceeds from the evening will benefit Providence students and programs. From the Desk of the College Counselor, Clara Gaitan Senior Parents, This is it! For most colleges and universities May 1 is the Candidate Reply Date. By that date your students must notify the colleges of their decision to attend or not. Hopefully, you and your students have had a chance to visit the campuses of the colleges to which they have been accepted. This physical presence on a campus can have a profound impact on the decision of whether to attend that college. Many times, students say, "It just feels right!" Your support and encouragement are vital in helping your students make a good choice. Based on discussions you have had and their own research, your students should be equipped to make informed, confident decisions. I am available to help in any way. Once the decision has been made: • • •
Complete all forms Pay any deposit required Pay close attention to ALL DEADLINES
Seniors should also: • •
Continue researching and applying for scholarships Continue working for excellent grades - colleges will rescind acceptances if there is a significant drop in grades!

Message from Claire Hickey, Dean of Studies Friday, April 27th is the end of the 5th Grading Period. While the Easter holiday is a good time to rest, it is also a good time to catch up as well as prepare for the final lap of classes before the end of the semester. Parents are encouraged to check grades online in the Aeries Gradebook. Anyone having difficulty accessing your student’s grades on Aeries is encouraged to contact our Tech Support at parent.help@providencehigh.org. As we move closer to Advanced Placement testing in early May, many classes are doing “mock testing” preparation on weekends and over the holidays. Feel free to contact teachers for those schedules. Major reading assignments are also offered for higher-level course students to complete during Easter break. In early May, information will be sent out regarding Follett’s Book Buyback process. Senior Buyback will occur following their last exam, May 31st, beginning at noon. Underclassmen Buyback will follow their last exam on June 14th. This is a reminder that Summer School begins here on campus June 25th. As was the case last summer, camps are also being offered, some of which begin as early as June 18th. Information is available on the PHS public website and in the front office. All students enrolled in 2012-2013 Honors, AP or advanced courses in Modern Language, Math, or Science will be assigned a “summer work packet” in order to be adequately prepared for those courses in the Fall. Beginning in June, teachers will be holding group orientation sessions during homeroom or after school to hand out this information to the students who requested these classes and who signed the Course Commitment Contract. Another way to complete the “summer work packet” is by enrolling in one of the related Enrichment courses offered at Providence during Summer School. If you have questions or would like further clarification relating to anything academic, please contact claire.hickey@providencehigh.org.
