In our last Ideas newsletter, attorney Linda J. Retz volunteered to share her thoughts in 2009 about possible tax legislation by the end of that year. To the surprise of most scholars, the 2009 legislation never materialized. Unless the law changes soon, the federal estate tax exemption will plummet to $1,000,000 for 2011 and later years and so will the exemption from the generation-skipping transfer tax (subject to cost-of-living adjustments). Also, estate and generation-skipping transfer tax rates will rise significantly. In an environment like this, charitable giving, irrevocable life insurance trusts, bypass trusts and other planning techniques will be important tools for saving taxes. For a more up-to-date assessment of possible tax law changes, please visit Ms. Retz’s website at www.ljratty.com.

Jean Vachon quietly benefited from our compassionate care without fuss or fanfare. But Jean was not just a passive recipient of great medical care at Providence Little Company of Mary. She acted out of gratitude to ensure that PLCM would continue to provide excellent medical care to tens of thousands of people well into the future. Sadly, Jean Vachon has passed away. But, thanks to her generosity, she has made an enduring impact. Jean’s will left $4,000,000 to the San Pedro medical center. That was the single largest gift ever given to the San Pedro campus. Her bequest created the Jean L. Vachon Imaging Center including invaluable imaging equipment (a nuclear medicine camera and a

computerized tomography scanner), now housed in fully-upgraded imaging rooms. Nuclear medicine and computerized tomography combine to deliver unprecedented image quality, critical for accurate and timely diagnosis of cardiac disease and other ills. Over 10,000 CT and nuclear medicine procedures are performed annually, according to Sandra Edson, Imaging Director at San Pedro. Every patient who undergoes one of those procedures benefits from Jean Vachon’s legacy. You don’t have to be a millionaire to create a testament to your values. Anyone can make a gift by will or living trust to support the mission of Providence Little Company of Mary.

Standing, from left, in front of the dedication plaque for the Jean Vachon Imaging Center are Providence LCM Medical Center San Pedro Chief Executive Nancy Carlson; Jean Vachon’s friends, Dotty Herrity and Arlene Seitz; and Foundation President Joseph Zanetta

Make Your Estate Plan Work for You

Discover the Benefits of Gift Planning • A gift of your retirement plan assets or an IRA account. By naming Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation as the primary or contingent beneficiary on the beneficiary designation form, you can make a tax-wise gift to support our mission. • A gift of appreciated property like real estate or securities. This is a tax-savings gift that can free you from managing property you no longer need. • A gift to PLCM Foundation of the income from property for a specified term of years. This is a tax-wise, immediate charitable gift. The property remaining after PLCM’s income interest ends, goes to individuals chosen by the donor (for example, grandchildren). If you have questions or would like help planning a gift, contact Director of Planned Giving Gail Frommer, J.D. at 310.514.5330 or gail.frommer@ providence.org.

□ Please send me the FREE guide, Your Personal Estate Planning Record. □ I’d like more information about wills and gift planning.

How to Remember Us in Your Will: 4 EASY STEPS Remembering Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation in your will is the most enduring statement you can make about your values and your belief in our mission. The support you have offered throughout your lifetime can go on for years to come. Your gift can be a specific asset, such as a certain amount of cash, securities or property, or a percentage of your estate. Plus, not only is a gift in your will flexible—you can change your mind at any time—but it can be accomplished in as little as four steps:

1. Determine whether you’d like to make a gift of a specific amount or if you’d like to leave a percentage of your estate. 2. Decide if you want to direct your gift to help particular programs or leave your gift unrestricted, allowing it to be used for our most pressing needs. 3. See your attorney to include your gift in your will or revocable living trust. 4. If you desire, please notify us of your intention so we can thank you and welcome you to our Circle of Caring.

Fold in half and tape shut with clear tape. No staples.

In these uncertain economic times, you may think twice before making a significant gift to support Providence Little Company of Mary medical centers and programs. Fortunately, with a planned gift, you can support our mission without sacrificing your needs. With planning (selecting the assets to fund the gift, using tax-saving strategies and retaining an income from the “gifted” property) you can do more to support Providence Little Company of Mary than you ever thought possible! Some of the most popular forms of planned gifts are: • A gift in your will or revocable living trust. This is the simplest planned gift accomplished by including a few sentences in your will or living trust. This gift will take effect at your passing, as a final testament to your values. • A gift that provides you with income for life. Several kinds of planned gifts can provide you and other individuals you choose, with an income for life. After the income interests end, the remaining balance goes to support PLCM’s mission.
