Letter From the Interim Head of School
D
ear Friends of Providence,
As this letter is written, we at Providence have completed our annual “Providence in Action” event for ninth graders and their families. On this particular Saturday morning, we faced over one hundred enthused middle school-age boys and girls and their parents. Whenever I am in front of such groups, I am reminded of the significance of the decisions made by parents to find the very best setting for their children’s education. It is humbling to stand before parents to address their concerns, and their questions are not simply about the subjects to be studied. In fact, quite a few questions dealt with ratios of teachers to students, behavioral expectations, and opportunities for clubs, arts, music, sports, and leadership. Many prospective parents wish to know that we will continue to provide the religious education that many of the children enjoy at their current schools. Most significantly, parental questions center about the role models who will be their children’s teachers. We deeply appreciate the awesome responsibility entrusted to us and, especially to this point, demonstrate our commitment on a daily basis. Deeds, not words, are what engender that trust.
It is my privilege to serve as Providence’s interim head of school and to engage in the life of this wonderful institution and its citizens. I encourage you to visit your school to learn more about its challenges and its many successes. You will discover that we honor the heritage established by the Sisters of Providence, and continue to seek ways to address the contemporary needs of our students. And, you will learn of our determination to protect and enhance this venerable place of learning for current and future generations. Thank you for your ongoing support of Providence High School. Yours in Providence, Michael E. Collins Interim Head of School
PHS Is Going Green! Pioneer Connections will now be offered as an electronic publication posted online and available via email. If you’d like to continue receiving the publication, please make sure we have your updated email address. Email us at GoGreen@providencehigh.org.

funding to support new programs in instrumental music, expanded science offerings, including new science facilities, language study and a global studies program. Most significantly, we continue to offer our teachers what is needed to continue to develop professionally, so they may serve students for the next decades, as Providence has for the past half century.

Sister Mary Gleason, SP (Sister Maria Theresa) 1918-2010
I
t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sister Mary Gleason, SP. Sr. Mary, or better known as Sr. Maria Theresa, was Providence High School’s first principal. She passed away on August 6, 2010 at the St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, WA at the age of 92 years old. Although she was initially interested in entering into the nursing profession, Sr. Mary taught elementary and high school in addition to holding administrative positions. Her teaching career of forty years brought her to Moxee City, Tacoma, Vancouver, Yakima, Burbank, and Seattle.
In addition to teaching, Sr. Mary was also a published author. She was asked to finish the manuscript of The Bell and the River, a biography about Mother Joseph. Years later, in 1992, she researched and wrote He Has Given Me a Flame, a Providence collection book about the life of Mother Joseph. It was after the publication of The Bell and the River that Sr. Mary was offered the challenge of opening a new high school in Burbank where she would be co-foundress, principal, and teacher. This school, with a humble beginning that included “classrooms” which were actually large tents set up on asphalt, was Providence High School. In 1994, Sr. Mary retired. She suffered a stroke in 2001 which left her unable to read or write, and

five years later moved to the St. Joseph Residence following the onset of Parkinson’s disease. Truly an inspiration to those who were blessed to know her, Sr. Mary’s teaching philosophy was student-based. She believed the job of a teacher was to “lead the child of darkness into light.” She once said, “every child has the right to total education. This education must be self-motivating, a continuing process which supercedes mere instructions; it must deepen and integrate learning.” Sr. Mary Gleason will surely be missed by the Providence community, but her legacy lives on at Providence High School each and every day.

ongratulations to Sr. Mary Hawkins, SP, who celebrated her 50th Jubilee as a Sister of Providence this past August! Sr. Mary was one of thirteen Sisters honored with a special mass at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, WA on August 7, 2010.
Prior to her arrival at PHS, Sr. Mary was also an educator in elementary and secondary schools. She currently is a member of PHS’ Board of Regents in addition to serving on the Community Ministry Board in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley Service Area.
In 2008, Sr. Mary retired from her position at Providence High School as Academic Vice Principal and moved up to the Seattle, WA area where she currently resides. She began her 26 year tenure at PHS in 1970 as a social sciences teacher and left in 1978 to pursue other duties for the Sisters of Providence. Sr. Mary returned to Providence High School in 1990 in a different capacity, that of Academic Vice Principal.

Welcome to the Providence Family! Mr. Mike Collins
Interim Head of School
A
fter an extensive search, Mr. Michael Collins was selected to be the Interim Head of School for the 20102011 school year while the search for a permanent Head of School continues. Collins excels in school leadership transitions, having recently held interim head of school positions for three different schools. Prior to that, he was Headmaster for a number of years at Frederica Academy in St. Simons Island, GA, Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara, CA, and Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, TX. Aside from years of experience as a headmaster, Mr. Collins also worked as Assistant Director/Dean of Student Services, Director of Middle School/Coordinator of K-12 Student Services, Department Head for Counseling Services/College Advising, and also spent years in the classroom as a teacher. Not one to take his interim position lightly, Mr. Collins has already rolled up his sleeves and has been hard at work setting plans in motion for the present school year, in addition to developing an intense five year plan for the school.
A Southern California native and product of Catholic education, Mr. Kaminski graduated from St. John Bosco High School in 1978 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Loyola Marymount University in 1982. About joining the Providence community, Mr. Kaminski says, “I am excited to take on this new challenge in such a welcoming and vibrant community. I look forward to partnering with all stakeholders in an effort to secure a promising future for Providence High School.” Mrs. Sigrid Barklund Faculty Member

She graduated from Caltech this past June with her MS degree in chemistry and prior to that attended The College of St. Catherine (now St. Catherine University), which is a Catholic women’s college in St. Paul, Minnesota where she graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Philosophy.
Mr. Paul Kaminski Director of Advancement
M
r. Paul Kaminski has accepted the position of Director of Advancement and will oversee the school’s future recruitment, marketing, and fundraising efforts. Prior to Providence High School, Mr. Kaminski served as the Director of Advancement at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, where he established the

school’s first fully staffed Advancement Department and implemented the school’s strategic plan for Advancement. Additionally, while at St. John Bosco, Kaminski restructured the school’s Alumni Association and recruited officers, helped establish the school’s investment policy and wrote the endowment policy, increased all major fundraising events, increased tuition aid, established a new model for student recruitment, and secured the largest alumni gift in school history, among many other notable achievements.

PHS Vice Principal Announces Retirement
A
fter nearly 30 years of dedicated service to Providence High School, Mr. Vic LeBreton, Vice Principal of Discipline and Student Activities, will retire at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. LeBreton began his tenure with PHS as a Spanish and Non Western Civilizations teacher and later also taught Life Commitments. In 1987, he accepted the position of Vice Principal of Discipline and Student Activities, and has worked in that capacity ever since. He has helped mold thousands of students into thoughtful, caring adults. Through every campus event and activity, Mr. LeBreton has always been one of the students’ biggest cheerleaders. He works closely with the student government and has also been a regular adult member on the senior Kairos Retreat team. 7
Although he may be retiring, LeBreton plans to remain busy by doing a lot of reading and gardening, learning to cook, and may return to writing, which was once his passion. Additionally, he would like to assist with the RCIA program at his parish, St. Mel, in Woodland Hills. Throughout his nearly 30 years at PHS, Mr. LeBreton says his interaction with the students is what he enjoyed the most. “Every encounter with every student is in fact holy, my opportunity to make that one student feel loved,” says LeBreton. “Even when I am "busting" them, this love has to be the attitude with which I correct them. These ‘holy encounters’ are what I will miss the most.”

Welcome, Class of 2014!
T
he 2010-2011 school year began differently this year for the incoming freshman class. In lieu of the traditional freshmen orientation day, on Friday, August 27, 2010 the class of 2014 arrived on campus at 2:30 p.m. for what was called “Pioneer Round Up.” “We’ve been doing the same thing for as long as I can remember,” said Mr. Vic LeBreton, Vice Principal of Discipline and Student Activities. “I thought it would be nice to do something different and involve the parents and entire faculty and staff.” The students were given a rundown on everything from school technology, PHS policies and procedures, and learning the Alma Mater, in addition to playing ice breaker games as a way of getting to know one another. Around 6:00 p.m., freshmen parents and transfer students and their parents arrived and joined the class of 2014 and PHS faculty and staff for a casual dinner of hot dogs, soda, and snacks sponsored by the Parent Board. The parents engaged in a special

scavenger hunt where they had the opportunity to meet their student’s teachers. A highlight of the day was a dance for the freshmen students that was hosted by the ASB. During this time, the parents attended an orientation presented by administrators and faculty and staff while Mr. LeBreton met with the transfer students. Once the transfer students were finished with their orientation, they had the option of joining the class of 2014 at the dance or hanging out on their own. “Everyone involved, the students, parents, faculty and staff members, had such a blast,” said Mr. LeBreton. “It was a great way to start the new school year.”
Theme Night - October 22, 2010
The senior class performs the cheer for their theme, “Senior’s Toy Chest.” The senior class came in first place.
Members of the junior class look on with pride as their class presents their theme, “Happy Junior Year.” The junior class placed second overall.

PHS Prepares for “The Big One” During Largest Earthquake Drill
O
n Thursday, October 21, 2010, Providence High School, along with Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, took part in the Great California ShakeOut, a full-scale earthquake drill designed to encourage preparation for the “Big One.” At 10:21 a.m., an alarm sounded, signaling the “earthquake,” and students and teachers dropped to the floor under their desks, demonstrating the “drop, cover, and hold on” method of protecting one’s self. Burbank firefighters were on hand to rescue student “victims” and took them by ambulance next door to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center where they were treated at a triage center. The student victims were made up to look bloodied and bruised, courtesy of the neighboring Walt Disney Studios. “Our students followed through with impeccable attention to the seriousness of the drill,” said Mike Collins, Interim Head of School. “We hold them to high expectations and they uphold those expectations.” Representatives from California Emergency Agency (CalEMA), the Los Angeles County of Emergency

Services, and the U.S. Geological Survey also participated in the drill, along with approximately two dozen delegates from Chile who were present to observe and share their own experiences of managing the 8.8 earthquake that their country experienced this past February. Representatives from Turkey and Germany were also on site. Additionally, a shake simulator was on site to demonstrate what an earthquake of up to an 8.0 magnitude would feel like and also showed how to properly ensure that large pieces of furniture were securely attached to the walls to prevent them from toppling over.

2010 Commencement Speech By Dikran Nalbandian ‘10
P
rovidence Administrators, Faculty, Staff, Parents, Honored Guests, Friends and Fellow Members of the class of 2010. Before I start, I just want to say that there are emergency exits to my left, and to my right. And in the case my speech crashes, I ask that you take those two exits. Please remain in single file and exit the premises slowly in case of an accident. In preparing for my remarks today, I came to the realization that, 20 or 30 years down the line, none of you will remember who gave the graduation speech today, unless by saying that I somehow tricked you into remembering. But honestly, I don’t think I will remember myself. However, there will be things you do remember, you will remember the parties tonight, you will remember your parents today and you will remember all the hard work you put in for the last four years to get to where you are right now. Celebrating those efforts, that is why we are here today. Most people would see us with open eyes as graduates. But I tell you: no. Because the term, “graduate” does not do us justice. We have traveled

far and endured many hardships and for that reason, we are not graduates, but happy victors. We have survived assails on all sides from the beasts of academia and are now emerging from the hallowed halls of Providence beating our breasts with pride. Throughout today’s celebration, our feeling will be bittersweet. We are anxious and excited for the future. But at the same time, we are very aware that there is a large portion of our lives we are leaving behind. Don’t be sad, don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Smile because of all the times that we flipped each other’s backpacks at lunch. Smile because we won theme day. Smile, because we’re finally graduating. We are all looking now at future doctors, future lawyers…future WalMart administrators. Yes, Providence has ensured a bright future for us all. Our time here at Providence has taught us a great deal of life lessons. We have learned the importance of being able to adapt. For how many times did we get referrals for chewing gum, or dress code violations before we knew how to correctly circumvent the rules. We have learned the
“ We have traveled far and endured many hardships and for that reason, we are not graduates, but happy victors.” importance of acting obsequiously with the faculty, be it for extra credit, or to get us out of detention. We have learned the skill of acceptance, when we realize we messed up, and we have to pay the consequences for it.
hours we put in. Here’s to all the blood, sweat and tears we spilled in the last four years. Here’s to you. I want to leave you with a quote by Dr. Seuss that I feel is very appropriate for this occasion (perhaps it’s a little familiar):
Investments are important. Too often we will get stuck thinking about investing in stocks or bonds, and we forget to invest in ourselves. Take stock in the knowledge you possess and realize the power of that knowledge. Carry yourself in a manner that becomes you, take pride in who you are and embrace that reality. Don’t let the hoary precepts of society inhibit you. Don’t be afraid to stretch your arms and flex your muscles every now and then.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” - Dr. Seuss
You’ve accomplished something great and honorable here at Providence, and it’s time for you to move on to what’s next. But do not let anything stop you from taking those first steps. You have an abundance of opportunities before you. But don’t waste your time trying to choose the perfect opportunity, because then you’ll miss the right opportunity. Commit yourself to the decisions that you will make. For regret is born from opportunities let go and paths not taken. Accept that there will be obstacles and failures in the future, but never give up because of it. You will learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others. Remember, there is very little learning in success. So here’s to the tests we passed with only a prayer. Here’s to all the sleep we lost, and all the after school

Alumni Updates From the Last 10 Years The first decade of the “two-thousands” has come and gone! Below is what some of our alumni have been up to since graduating from PHS:
I
t’s been four years since I crossed the stage of Forest Lawn’s Hall of Liberty, culminating my experience at Providence High School, and life since has been composed primarily of more education. In the fall of 2006 I began my college journey at the University of Southern California, where I eventually found my way into the world of communication, and, later, business. [In May] I completed that degree as well, earning magna cum laude honors and becoming one of USC’s 278 Renaissance Scholars. While my education has consumed a lot of my time over the past four years, I have still been able to come back to Providence and coach boys’ basketball. As I enter into my fourth summer coaching, I cannot recall a more rewarding or fulfilling experience in my life. It is a true joy working with Providence’s young men, teaching them not just basketball, but

life lessons as well. I happily and readily exert my influence on them as they make the journey I made not so long ago. Now that I have graduated from USC, taking the next step forward means finding a permanent job. One of the feelings my coaching experience has developed in me is my desire to stay connected to sports, and so I hope to do that with my career. The search for work has been an uphill battle so far – it started back in October and still has not yielded the results I have sought. I have not lost hope, however, despite the poor economy and multiple interviews that haven’t quite gone my way. For now, I trust that eventually, I will end up where I’m supposed to be, and in the meantime, I plan to take advantage of whatever opportunities might cross my path. - Corwin Sanchez ‘06

even years ago I was 13 years old and I was entering into a new world, Providence High School. I wasn’t sure what to expect or what I would gain from the experience because up until that point I was still stuck in my middle school world and high school seemed scary to me. Seven years later I have a changed opinion on what I was to experience and what I had experienced. I came out of Providence High School with four of the greatest years of my life so far, a new family, which I had grown to love and the best education possible. From playing different sports, to class events like Pioneer Day, to just hanging out with my friends, Providence gave me a lifetime of great experiences. Moving on from Providence, I am currently attending Cal State University Northridge where I am a Business Administration major with a music minor. Coming into college was a hard experience for me because it meant leaving all my high school memories behind. It also meant leaving behind my daily routine of walking up at 7:15 am to make it to homeroom on time or being able to see my friends everyday. College allows for much more time

on your own and as a result of that you begin to discover who you really are. High School was the preparation to be ready to deal with discovering ones self and exploring the vast new world that is opened up. There are some down sides to all this free time you acquire as a college student; one of them is finding a job. I currently work for a company called FAIC (Fine Arts Insurance Claims) which deals with personal property damage claims and we assess the value of the damage. Above and beyond work and school I am also doing a lot of musical engineering and producing, which is what I hope to become upon graduating from college. Once I graduate with my bachelors, I will then head to a musical engineering school, which is owned my uncle who is a thirtyyear veteran engineer. Other than work and school I still play some sports, I am currently playing in a Burbank Basketball league with Corwin Sanchez, and I try to play baseball as much as possible. - Will Slater ‘07

Alumni Letters
E
very now and then, the teachers at PHS pass on letters and/or emails they have received from past students. While it is always great to hear how the students are doing now, it is also a nice pat on the back when the teachers find out how much of an impact they had on their students. Here are two recent examples of emails received.
“Hi, Dr. Harjani! I was just thinking about you today and wanted to see how you are. How are classes going? I just got my first interview for medical school. It's at Ohio State in January so I'm very excited to go. Everyone I've spoken to from the school seems so friendly. I'm at USC right now-- grabbed lunch with Jenny Farah a couple of weeks ago. I love it here.
“My first year of college went really well. All of my English professors were extremely impressed with my Jane Shaffer essay structure (guess I was the only student that knew about it at my school) and I ended up getting the highest essay grades in my class thanks to you! I’m changing my major from English to journalism so I can write for magazines and hopefully start my own art magazine in the future. Anyway, just [wanted to give you] an update and it’s all thanks to you!”
I'm doing well in my Global Medicine masters program and actually scored top of my class on our final. The class is based on medical school lectures we attend with the first years so it was a lot of fun. Hope all is well! Just wanted to let you know how the foundation you gave me in the sciences is helping me out now!
- Heather Garcia ‘09 (sent to Ms. Marisa Paolone ‘95)
PS. Say hi to your classes and tell them to listen to you and to study hard for your tests because the way you test them will really help them learn/test well in the future!” - Laura Lewis ‘06

Current PHS staff member, Mr. Ben Hernandez, for the loss of his brother, Abel Ernesto Hernandez Velente. Micki Furr ‘73 for the loss of her sister, Charisse Furr Berne ‘74, who passed away in November of 2009 and her mother, Madeline Furr, who passed away in March of 2010. The Providence High School community would like to extend our deepest prayers to the family of Conor Lynch and the community at Notre Dame High School. PHS is on Facebook!
Current PHS staff member, Mary Lubeley, mother of Janet Lubeley Hensen ‘92, Danielle Lubeley Maki ‘95, and Theresa Lubeley ‘97. Please keep Mary in your prayers as she recovers from a recent hospital stay.

It’s time again for our annual appeal for The Providence Fund! The Providence Fund supports financial aid and scholarships for Providence students who would otherwise be unable to attend Providence High School. This fund is an expression of the mission of the Sisters of Providence to help those in need. In these challenging economic times, we ask you to look within your heart and determine whether you are able to partake in this mission and help make a difference in the lives of your fellow Pioneers. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and as always, you remain in our prayers.
Did You Know? An exciting new option for making a contribution to Providence High School is our new Online Donations feature on our website. Simply log on to: www.providencehigh.org and click on the “Donate NOW!” button on the right-hand side. You will be able to make a secure donation via your credit card to any of the following funds: • Area of Greatest Need • The Providence Fund (Financial Aid/Scholarship) • 50 Year Club The 50 Year Club annual scholarship fund was established by alumnae from the Providence High School Class of 1959.
