ear Friends of Providence High School,

encounter the living Jesus Christ-not just the values that He taught, but the person that He is.”

“You Belong Here.” This is such a terrific motto for this wonderful community of learners! I love that there is a double meaning at play here. On one hand, it is such a nurturing and self affirming motto for our students, parents, faculty and staff members, but it is also a “command” for the greater community…you’re missing something special, and You Belong Here! Having spent the summer at Providence reaffirms my belief that I belong here! There is a true sense of community at Providence that is evident every day on this campus. I am honored and humbled to lead this school into the future and continue the inspired work of the Sisters of Providence. In this issue you will read about the many exciting things that are happening at Providence - the success and triumphs of the past year including the fantastic Gala , the wonderful graduation ceremony of the Class of 2011, and we also honor and say goodbye to legendary Providence educator and administrator, Mr. LeBreton. These are exhilarating times at Providence. We continue to be a faith-based community that graduates young people who will make a real difference in the world as leaders, thinkers, and problem-solvers. The Most Reverend Clarence Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu says, “Most of all, a Catholic school should be a place where we

I look forward to meeting you in person. Please come by and see this community in action! Yours in Providence,

A Familiar Face Takes on a New Position at PHS

M

r. Dennis Bullock ‘88 is no stranger to Providence High School. For the past seven years, he’s been in the classroom as a teacher in the Social Studies department and from 1984-1988, Bullock was in the classroom as a student. His next role at PHS puts him in the position of the new Dean of Students, the position previously called the Vice Principal of Student Activities & Discipline that was held by Mr. Vic LeBreton. “Mr. LeBreton’s greatest gift was his ability to nurture a safe, trusting and loving environment at PHS while remaining an effective Vice Principal who made sure the rules remained relevant and enforced,” Bullock said. “He accomplished this through his approach to the job: he led by example, and earned respect by always being respectful of the students—and of the spirit of the rules. “ “Thus, my challenge, along with the rest of the administration, is to continue that culture, and make sure it continues to prosper,” continued Bullock. Mr. Bullock plans to modify a few things, such as the dreaded detention, which will now consist of a mandatory writing component that must be completed during the period otherwise an additional detention will be given. On the topic of detention, Bullock believes it “should be as undesirable an experience as possible, without being overbearing...striking the right balance between the spirit of the rules, and the letter, is key, I believe.”

maintain his “teacher hat” as he will teach one semester of AP Government and one semester of AP Macroeconomics. As he enters into his eighth year at PHS, Mr. Bullock is excited to embark on this new position. “I will have my own style, but my overarching goal will be to achieve, as best I can, precisely what Vic achieved and maintained: a safe, trusting and loving environment at PHS, based upon sensible, purposeful rules.” In addition to his new position, Bullock was selected by The James Madison Memorial Fellowship of Washington, D.C. as one of 57 James Madison Fellows for 2011 in its twentieth annual fellowship competition. James Madison Fellowships support the graduate study of American history by aspiring and experienced secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies. Named in honor of the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged “Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,” a James Madison Fellowship funds up to $24,000 of each Fellow’s course of study towards a master’s degree. That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution. Additional information may be found at www. jamesmadison.gov. Congratulations, Mr. Bullock!

The PHS community will miss seeing Mr. LeBreton’s smiling face and cheerful demeanor, and hearing his famous daily dismissal message of “study hard, stay safe, and we’ll see you tomorrow.” A scholarship has been established in honor of Mr. LeBreton. was thinking about the state of the entertainment industry in Southern California, and it occurred to me that the Motion Picture Academy has its Oscar, the television industry has the Emmy, the music business has the Grammy, the advertising industry has the Clio, but Providence has no brand, no icon for its annual awards. And it should. The other strand of my thoughts considered the retirement of Mr. Vic LeBreton. If an institution can be said to have a heart, then at Providence that heart must surely be Victor LeBreton. Moreover he has been a stalwart and enthusiastic supporter of the 5

media department from its beginning long before my tenure here began. In addition, he is even more obsessed with movies than I am. And finally he has been my friend, through thick and thin, for many years. For these reasons and countless others, we of Providence Media have decided that henceforth the Providence Media Showcase Awards will be called the Victors in honor of Victor LeBreton and his long and enthusiastic support of Providence’s Media Focus Program. - Mr. Joe Ingraffia, Media Focus Program Direcor Summer 2011

Providence’s new Head of School, Joe Sciuto, said, “I am most impressed with Coach Baskerville’s focus on the importance of process over results. He is a terrific teacher of basketball, but he will also be a tremendous mentor for the young men at Providence.” The Pioneers have seven returning varsity players, including Patrick Gonzales who was the State’s top scorer averaging 37.8 points per game. Coach Baskerville first met with the team on June 1st, and coached the team during the summer leagues, in addition to offering his expertise during a basketball clinic and weeklong camp offered to boys and girls in grades second through eighth that was held on campus in July and August.

n Saturday, June 25th, Providence hosted a free basketball clinic for boys and girls entering second through eighth grades that focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game. Fifty-five children participated in the clinic, facilitated by PHS basketball coach Ernest Baskerville. On hand to help lead drills were Chuma Awaji, PHS Assistant Coach and former UC Irvine guard; actress Erika Ringor, star of the film, Love & Basketball; Lazeric Jones, UCLA guard; De’End Parker; UCLA forward; Andre Smith, NBA trainer; and Marcus Lovett Sr, WeWin Sports founder. Twenty students participated in Providence’s weeklong volleyball camp that was offered June 13-16. Like the basketball clinic, the volleyball camp was offered to boys and girls entering second through eighth grades. Mark Mina, the Director of the West Pasadena Volleyball Club and member of the Providence Volleyball Staff ran the camp that focused on instruction on all fundamentals of volleyball as well as team concepts.

herese Vesagas ‘11 was selected as one of two recipients to receive the 2011 City of Burbank Youth Board’s “Austin Cook Award for Outstanding Youth.” There were several applications with many outstanding students nominated. It was a difficult decision for the Board to pick only two recipients. The Board selected the nomination of Therese, as an excellent example of a student who possesses the character, achievement, and actions that have positively contributed to our community. The “Austin Cook Award for Outstanding Youth” is a program which honors students who possess qualities consistent with the goals of the award program. Nomination forms were distributed to middle and high schools both public and private, City of Burbank departments, and community organizations. Therese was honored for her achievement during the Burbank City Council meeting on May 17, 2011 held in the City Council chambers at City Hall, prior to the regular council meeting. On Our Way to the Tenth! By Arjan Harjani, MD PHS Science Department Chair & Medical Focus Program Director

Y

es, Providence High School has completed nine years of enrichment of Math & Science learning through its annual competition where almost every student of the school has committed to at least one project with some students submitting as many as three. We have already started our march to our TENTH one in 2012. As this ‘fever’ continues its onward journey, the administration and faculty of the Math and Science (and soon to be three with the formal introduction of the Technology Focus Program) departments continue to encourage student participation in these exciting and growing fields of learning. Our desire for excellence is clearly demonstrated in our ability and effort to motivate students to do their best in the areas of problem based learning and using the skills of critical thinking in the classroom and real life situations as well. This year, once again, we had the privilege of Mrs. Castillo as the chair of the event. Together, the math and science teachers worked with students and deadlines. Projects from each class were selected for a place in the Student Activity Center and when the day arrived, the excitement among students was clearly visible. Tuesday, March 22, 2011 started out just as any other school day except for the fact that students whose projects were selected by teachers (and peer evaluation in some classes with teacher discretion) were busy placing their creative products in the gymnasium and proudly showing their work to their friends and classmates. That evening, participating team members were required to report at 6 PM in order for their projects to be judged by ‘outside’ judges. A large number of these judges were alumni of Providence HS and it was a moment of pleasure and pride to see them serve in this prestigious role. They all were very appreciative of being given that honor and they all had a great time listening to students’ presentations and assessing their

9

work. The following judges deserve mention for their contribution to the growth of the Providence community and congratulations for their demonstration of excellence - Mr. Nicholas Rondon ’98, Ms. Janet Han ’05, Ms. Araksi Oganesian ’07, Dr. Sarika Desai ‘00, Dr. Christina Ashjian ’03, Ms. Jenny Farah ’04, and Dr. Neha Guruji ’97. The Student Activity Center was filled with parents, siblings, friends, and members of the general Providence community as we all enjoyed an evening of a learning experience. Judges got ‘down and dirty’ with the job of grading the entries and assessing points for first, second, and third place. Finally, at around 8:30, we were ready to announce the winners. The anticipation had been building and we could hold back no more! Excitement was in the air as winners were announced and asked to pose for a “Winners Circle” picture. All awards were formally presented at the year end awards assembly but we wanted parents to share the excitement and pride of the work done by their children. This was a great social and academic event combined into one big success. The faculty was very proud of what the students had accomplished but as always, we have our work cut out – and that is to continue to strive for excellence and to help students appreciate the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) aspects of their learning at all levels, beginning with grade/ elementary school life. Building fundamentals is critical to mastery in these areas of problem based learning. Congratulations to All our Students! We’re extremely proud of your work. May God Bless you with success long after you ‘get your wings’ from Providence High School.

Looking to the Future of Health Care By Arjan Harjani, MD PHS Science Department Chair & Medical Focus Program Director

F

ive of the top ten projected jobs by demand for the next decade are health care specific fields. That’s one reason why Paxton/Patterson has developed a Health Science Careers on-line program to address a wide range of careers and skills that will attract students to the health sciences. Paxton/ Patterson’s Learning Systems engage students by applying core academics in real world scenarios. Students will achieve higher levels of learning through application, analyzation, evaluation, and creation. They will learn 21st Century skills using hands-on Project Based Learning with a strong career focus. The Paxton/Patterson Health Science Careers program enables students to determine if their interests and aptitudes are well suited for a Healthcare career. The program is completely correlated with the National Healthcare Foundation Standards and Accountability Criteria Earlier this year, Nicole Ramirez ‘13 was invited to participate in the creation of this program. Her mentor and preceptor was Mrs. Linda DominguezGasson MCD, CCC-SLP, Manager of SpeechLanguage Pathology/Audiology department at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Nicole helped completing the tasks, asking questions, and lending support/advice to the project from the perspective of a student in a Health Careers. She was professional, motivated, and enthusiastic and had a very positive approach toward a successful completion of the project, which besides an overview of speech-language pathology and audiology, contained lesson topics such as speech production, speech/language therapy, social use of language and autism, traumatic brain injury and cognition, to name a few. Mrs. Dominguez-Gasson commented on Nicole’s intelligent enthusiasm and has noted her to be a valuable asset to the Medical Focus Program

at Providence High School. In her letter she also stated “Nicole was an enormous help to me during a challenging filming.” For her unique contribution to this exciting program, Nicole was presented with a plaque at the school’s annual awards assembly on June 6th, 2011. The Medical Focus Program is blessed to have outstanding students like Nicole who consistently demonstrate excellence and exemplary work. Nicole has shown a serious interest in pursuing a career in the field of health care. Congratulations Nicole! We are very proud of you.

The Measure of Success! By Arjan Harjani, MD PHS Science Department Chair & Medical Focus Program Director

n March of 2010, Mr. Emil Hazarian, then newly elected president of the Measurements Science Conference (MSC) organization, had set a goal to include high school participation and competition in future conferences. We tossed our hat in the ring with the promise of getting a team of students ready to represent PHS. In May of 2010, we invited juniors interested in submitting projects in measurements science to a meeting where we introduced the organization, its role in industry, and its commitment to having measurement related projects presented to the attendees of the conference, mostly engineers. At the other end, MSC was ready to host high school participants in the 2011 conference. When the dust settled, eight students made the final cut, establishing three teams with projects that were their own creation from start to finish. We supervised and maintained the timeline for all deadlines and draft work including abstracts, biographies, power point slide shows, and quality control measures to meet the guidelines of the organizers.

wisdom from the experts and a load of credit and applause for their hard work, confidence, and style of delivery. It was a unique experience for our students and we were all proud of their effort and collaborative work. Upon our return to PHS, we all celebrated one more example of our commitment to excellence. Together, we did it! Congratulations to the following PHS juniors: • Eldrin Masangkay & Darryn Albert for their project titled, “The Sports Enigma” • Kevin Mark, Pateel Margossian, & Catherine Saint for their project titled, “Bridges: It’s What’s On the Inside that Counts” • Gabriel Ting, Chanell Rodillas, & Marilyn Rodriguez for their project titled, “DJ SonicSerrato Scratch Live”

Providence Bids Adieu to the Class of 2011

T

he class of 2011 somberly sang the words of Providence’s alma mater for the last time as PHS students on Saturday, June 4 during the graduation ceremony at the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills. The graduates processed into the hall at the start of the ceremony to a standing ovation, as a result of the recording of the traditional processional march, Giuseppe Verdi’s Grand March from “Aida,” that kept skipping. The clapping from the audience set the precedence for a truly welcoming and celebratory afternoon as 96 members of the class of 2011 prepared to say goodbye to their high school years and embark on the next phase of their lives. Mark Quintos was named the class valedictorian while Ana Solis was the salutatorian. Joshua Manlutac was honored with the Archidiocese Christian Service Award and Megan Roope was bestowed with Providence’s most prestigious honor, the Mother Joseph Award.

2011 Commencement Speech By Julie Boutros ‘11

“ ...we are now poised to begin our journey towards success.” M

r. Collins, Providence Administration, Faculty, Staff, Parents, Honored Guests, Friends, and fellow members of the Class of 2011: I stand before you all with the honor and privilege of speaking on behalf of this outstanding group of students.

All we do is win, win, win no matter what. Four years ago, we stood on a similar stage and said goodbye to middle school and entered a land that seemed mysterious and yet so exciting. Even with all of our questions about high school and what it would be like, there was an easy transition to a school where most of us had already been exposed. Today, we graduate with not so clear of a path. We leave a place of comfort and stability to enter a large and sometimes daunting place - the real world. For some of us, this is just another transition to a higher level of education. For others, this is an opportunity to further explore ourselves in different settings. But for all of us, with this change, comes new experiences and new obstacles. Parents, I was told to keep this short so there is no way I can completely explain to you what your children mean to me. Your daughters and sons have touched the lives of everyone standing before you today. Yes… these “babies” have made a difference. Thank you for bringing these amazing people to my life, these students are not only your little boy or girl but they have become my closest friends, and my support system. On behalf of my classmates, we all

want to thank our parents for everything you do for us. Although we don’t show it often, we are eternally grateful. Thank you for sending each and every one of us to Providence – a place where we have grown to become the people graduating today. You have instilled in us a set of values and morals that meshed so well with those of Providence. Providence has created an environment unique from any other high school. Unlike other horror stories you hear about high schools in the area, Providence has established a place where students are free to be themselves. Being at Providence has allowed us to be goofy, to be “weird” by “normal” standards, to be “nerdy,” to be socially awkward, to be anything we want to be without fear of being rejected. We belonged here. Fellow classmates, remember back to freshman year, how you became friends with the people you call your closest today. Whether it was a mutual “I don’t know anything on this test” glance or through organized school activities like sports, making friends at Providence was easy.

All we do is win, win, win no matter what. Freshman year we all used to joke saying “what is the athletics department going to do without us when we leave?” because so many of us were involved in all of the sports offered. Little did we know that we would be saying “what is this school going to do without us?” as we got closer to graduation. I remember the end of freshman year, sophomore class elections. We promised to break the infamous

“sophomore curse” that had cast a spell over sophomores for so long. We knew that if any sophomore class was going to place better than fourth place in Theme Day, it would be ours and so, we set out to fulfill that promise. I think that was the first time I saw greatness in our class. I saw our class come together to make the lights of the Vegas strip shine. We, for the first time, used the gifts of our classmates to our advantage. I’m pretty sure I don’t have to remind anybody on this stage what happened that night but just in case anybody has forgotten that night, Theme Night, we performed in ways that Providence was not expecting from sophomores. After all, we still were performing with the dark cloud of the “sophomore curse” hanging above our heads. When the results were read, we had done it. The underdogs had risen to take second place. And what did we do to celebrate? No, not party like all the other classes, we went to IHOP. As we filed into the tiny restaurant, our faces lit just as bright as our winning banner. That, to me, was the beginning of our winning streak. As we approached the end of sophomore year, with a list of class names, like the odyssey and the inferno, we set out to find a name that could match our greatness. With majority class vote, we became the “Majesty.” Befitting if you ask me but boy did that name come with high expectations. By this time, we had become a class expected to amaze, one to achieve and to thrive and, like with all other things, we accepted the challenge and would NOT fail.

All we do is win,win win no matter what. Junior year we came back bigger and better. By then we knew the rules and, well for the most part, how to get around them. We placed second in Theme Day… yea. Second. Then, the infamous rocket project came around. Some dreaded the day and others didn’t expect it to be “too bad.” For those who weren’t expecting it, it hit hard. Whether it was the terms or the actual building of the rocket, this project tested friendships and character. On Memorial Day that year we all woke up before dawn and met Mr. Talley and Mr. Bullock at La Mirage Dry Lake Bed to launch our masterpieces. We survived the rocket project. A few shorts week later, the class of 2010 was off and it was our time to shine. We were the “big dogs” on campus. Like Mr. LeBreton told us many times throughout this year, our class has a bond like none before. We are able to make a difference through the “great leadership that shines through us” as he calls it. To

23

me though, I think we were great because we didn’t want to be anything less than what was expected. Theme Day 2011 was one that will never be forgotten because of all of the hard work that was put into it. Through unforgettable dances such as “Jack in the Box,” “Transformers,” and “Toy Soldiers,” we made the toys in our toy chest come to life.

All we do is win, win win no matter what. Our wins went far beyond class wins in Theme Day and Pioneer Day. Among the students sitting before you, our class has been blessed with brains, creativity and talent. From the beginning of this year, many of our seniors have been recognized in various fields. The visual and performing arts department has been awarded for the talents in choir, drama and the arts. Among us we have a National Merit Scholar and several recipients of academic scholarships. Also many of our athletic teams did really well this year. Our class has left its mark on Providence and on one another. As we walk across this stage today, we have all won. We accomplished what for some of us is a first in the family, and for others, something that seemed almost impossible. But for all of us, we are now poised to begin our journey towards success. I know that graduation today is the beginning of great things in each and every one of you. Many people say that graduation is the beginning of the rest of your life. For the past four years, we have had each other to cry with, to laugh with, to lose with and to win with and never again will we be in a setting like that. But don’t let that break the spirit of this class. Continue to strive to win. To win in your daily lives, in your academic and future successes and with all of the many blessings you will be given. Michael Jordan once said, “If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” So, as we enter a world that doesn’t seem so clear and nice, remember, class of 2011, all you do is win win win no matter what. Julie’s Awards & Leadership: Cum Laude, President’s Education Award (Silver Certificate), Friends Against Drugs Ambassador, Medical Focus Program Participant, ASB Star Award, ASB Vice-President. She will attend the University of California, Irvine this fall.

Class of ‘66 Celebrates 45th Reunion

because, for a few hours, I felt like I was 23 again). I loved it all and thank you for your compliments and (fortunately) positive memories about our classroom adventures and lessons. As I said, Providence High in the 1960’s was unlike any other place -- a "Perfect Storm" of students and teachers and historical events that I have never forgotten. Thank you, also, for having me as your guest and, as I've done before, I will make a donation to PHS in your honor.”

he Class of 1966 was well represented to commemorate the 45th year since graduation, held on the school campus May 22nd. Believe it or not, alums 'of our age' can still squeal like teenagers when we see friends from our past. Wasn't it just yesterday? This was our first reunion to be held on the school campus and we were all delighted with the tour of the campus. We all envisioned ourselves working in the lab with Sr. Rebecca or creating objects of art in the room where Ms. Gabrielle inspired us. Some of us remembered the Student Council Room...some with memories of responsibility and others remembered being in the "hot seat." Most of us were amazing with the transformation and expansion of the campus...but all agreed that the intimate 'small school' feeling was still there.

We extended an invitation to Sr. Lucille Dean (we knew her as Sr. Assunta Marie), and though unable to attend, she sent lovely words to be read before our meal. Thank you to Rosina Caven Piazza ‘66 (PHS Assistant Admissions Director) for all her help as an 'insider' in seeing that we felt so welcome at the old campus. Thank you also to the reunion committee: Clarene Graham McCarthney ‘66, Missy Farnsworth ‘66, Jan Boudreau Martin ‘66, Sue Turmell Husk, Francine Lipscomb Warde ‘66, Julie Howard George ‘66, and Carol (Shannon) Bixby Harding ‘66. Without their input our event would not have been so enjoyed. God willing, we'll be doing this all over again in five years for the big ' 5 - 0'.

Among the 45 who attended was our guest, Ms. Linda Gill, who taught us History and English. She has been able to attend just about all our reunions and probably has the most fun. Here's a letter I received from her the following week.

"I want to thank you for including me in your reunion. To me, it was the best one of all because I was able to talk and laugh with so many of you (and

very now and then, the teachers at PHS pass on letters and/or emails they have received from past students. While it is always great to hear how the students are doing now, it is also a nice pat on the back when the teachers find out how much of an impact they had on their students. Here is a recent example of an email received. Hello Dr. Harjani, I hope this email finds you well. I am currently in the middle of my second year, as medical colleges in India require the second year subjects to be taught for 1.5 years. I’ve planned to take the Step 1 for the USMLE next year. While I was searching for the anatomy and physiology lecture videos, it reminded me of you and the Medical Focus Program. I wanted to thank you for all the time you spent in 12th grade reviewing my career goals and recommending strategies for achieving them. Looking back, the challenging tests, hospital internship, and various labs have certainly prepared me for medical

school. While India, as you know, has a completely different approach to studying and teaching, the high caliber of work you expected from your students definitely was a rewarding experience and has given me the unique benefit of being able to adapt and do well anywhere. During my first year in medical school, I took the subjects Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry. I received distinction in Biochemistry and the 4th highest score in my class of 150. I was also selected to participate in a regional biochemistry competition, which took place in Madras Medical College. As of now, I’m taking Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, and Microbiology. Of all the four subjects, I have to say Pathology is the most demanding. I just wanted to thank you and let you know how everything is going. - Karen Devadoss ‘09

Message From Our Director of Advancement

D

ear alumni, families, friends, students, and benefactors,

As the school year comes to an end it is with mixed emotions that we send the class of 2011 on their way. They have been such an inspiration this year and have been great ambassadors for Providence High School. As we now begin to prepare for the 2011-2012 school year, we will take that inspiration into our new endeavors. We will miss the class of 2011, but we know they are ready for the next step.

Providence High School has experienced a year of wonderful successes that should be celebrated, many of which are documented here in Pioneer Connections. As a tribute to the Sisters of Providence, it is important that we all work together to preserve this wonderful legacy known as Providence High School.

Each year Providence High School welcomes a new freshmen class. This year will be no different as we welcome the Class of 2015. They will have the distinction of being the largest class in the school. Come August, over 125 bright new faces will begin their journey and ultimately leave their own unique legacy.

Yours in Providence

As a community, it is essential that we continue to support PHS through our donations. Although our tuition remains very competitive at $11,000.00, the cost to educate each student is approaching $16,000.00. That $5,000 gap has to be made up through fundraising. Every donation counts and each donation directly impacts a student here at Providence High School. Never underestimate the power of your giving!
