Providence High School YOU BELONG HERE.
Message From Our Head of School
Dear Friends of Providence High School, Amazingly enough, another school year has come to a close. As I get older, the days, weeks, months, and years seem to go by faster! This has been a terrific year at Providence High School. It has been one filled with successes, accomplishments, joy, celebrations and pride. There is a wonderful energy around campus, and I am proud to be a part of this community! A theme that I have spoken about a great deal this year is community. Parents, faculty, staff, students, alumni, former faculty and staff members, and other friends of Providence are probably tired of hearing me talk about the importance of community, but I really believe our sense of community is what makes us different, and focusing on community can make us even better! Pioneer Connections is a celebration of our community. In this issue you will read about terrific community events and successes like the remarkable “Shoot From the Heart” media project, the outstanding drama and choir performances this year, the “Stand 4 Change” antibullying event held here at PHS, the Measurement Science Conference, the 10th Annual Math, Science and Technology Fair, the history-making boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons, a wonderful Biology class project…and many others!
that we all love and respect. Also, please check out our new website, www.providencehigh.org, that launched on June 26th. Yours in Providence,
Joe Sciuto Head of School YOU BELONG HERE.
Enjoy reading about these events, but more importantly, help us spread the word. Tell your friends and neighbors about all of the great things that are happening at PHS. We are all a part of this community, and we all need to be active participants in this community, and celebrate our successes together. Be proud of your community. I know that I am! I encourage your support of the Providence Fund and the Family Pledge Program. Without your continued generosity, we will not be able to continue to build up this community

Providence’s Heartfelt “Shoot From the Heart” Focus Program Students Work Side by Side For Operation Kids By Benjamin Jury ‘13 Founded by philanthropist Dennis Webb in 1999, Operation Kids provides services for individuals, families, and companies in need of support. Because the foundation receives donations related to administrative costs and all other expenses, Operation Kids ensures that 100% of donations goes towards designated programs and charities. Based out of Utah, the foundation supports projects in all 50 states, as well as 25 countries around the world. The six-day shoot began on Thursday, December 15th, with a brainstorming discussion, where media students shared and exchanged ideas for potential projects. The first story involved visiting and creating a PSA for Shriners Hospital’s Burn and Prosthetic Department which builds free prosthetic limbs for injured children. Students visited several patients including two boys, ages 5 and 11.

his past December, students from the Media, Music and Medical Focus programs collaborated on a short film project entitled “Shoot From The Heart,” aimed at inspiring teens to make a difference by creating “media that matters.” In each segment, Providence media students set out to document and highlight acts of service conducted by other teens across the country. They shoot, write and edit pieces, like Public Service Announcements (PSA’s), documentaries, and music videos, in an effort to create media that can make a positive impact on the world. Operation Kids, a nonprofit organization created to improve the quality of life for children worldwide, sponsored the project in conjunction with Media Focus faculty member Christen Harty Schaefer.

“The shoot absolutely benefited the Medical Focus students,” program director Dr. Arjan Harjani said. “They learned so much more for their experience; it’s a double dose [of understanding and applying their knowledge] for them.” Students realized the long-term benefits of the trip as well. “It opened my eyes up to all the different branches in the medical field,” Elizabeth Velez, a junior enrolled in the program explained. The second story, shot Friday evening, involved a profile on George Genovese, a 90-year-old Dodger employee who is arguably baseball’s most notable living amateur talent scout; students intended the interview to honor Genovese’s dedication and passion for baseball.
The third story, in January, took the students to Utah, where they set out to use their filmmaking skills to make a difference in the life of a child. Providence traveled to Kearns High School to highlight an amazing group of Utah students who raised enough money to purchase a four-foot, wheel based remote-controlled robot that through “Skype-like” technology allows hospital or home bound children to interact with classmates, without ever leaving their beds.
Providence’s media hopefuls agreed that the experience was equally eye opening on their end. “It was really cool to be able to take part in the planning, filming and the interviewing of people,” senior Saoirse McAllister said. “All the crew, students, and hospital workers were amazing,” fellow senior Christina Bermeo noted, “and I’m just overall happy to have taken part in something that can change people’s lives.”

Christen Harty Schaefer, who spearheaded the effort to promote student involvement in Operation Kids, was floored by the gumption and creative zeal the media students displayed. “They organize themselves and talk to each other,” Schaefer said in an interview. “They always take the ball and run with it,” she continued. The real reward, it seems, lies not only in the finished pilot, but also in the growth and development of those involved. “Every time they do an operation, I see them growing, as media students, and as people; and the people that they’re growing into, are just phenomenal.” Schaefer later acknowledged. “Watching them has made me truly believe that it is possible to create media that really affects other people,” she noted. “It can be fun, it can be entertaining, and it can be emotional.”

Below is an account from Mr. Bird, detailing his class’ discovery: “Earlier this week Providence lost one of its living residents, a tree. The tree lived in what was the junior lunch area by the “D” building. Little was known about this tree so my fourth period Honors Biology class set out to investigate. Dendrochronology is the process of telling a tree’s history based on the rings in its trunk. Using Dendrochronology, the class was able to determine that the tree was 38 years old and born in 1974. The tree came to join us at Providence when the “D” building was built. The students learned that the tree enjoyed the most rainfall from the years of 1986-1991, which was a period of happy growth for the tree. The years of 1992-1995 were hard years for the tree probably due to low rainfall. The tree’s growth picked up again

Students Give Firsthand Accounts About the Measurement Science Conference
M
SC, or the Measurement Science Conference, has been a great experience for me. When I participated for the first time, I did not know what to expect. There were a lot of deadlines and requirements that my group had to meet in order to be a part of the conference. With all of that came a lot of hard work, dedication, and time spent after school and on weekends. Although the projects took a long time to finish, they were definitely worth the effort. We were able to present our projects at the Pasadena Convention Center and have our project evaluated by professionals in metrology (science of measurement). In addition, we got to go through a “hall” where we got the chance to see firsthand some of the things that these professionals have been working on. Because I enjoyed the experience, I decided to accept the offer to participate once again this year. This time, the convention took place at the Disneyland Hotel and like last year, was very impressive. The people hosting the convention were very gracious and made sure that all our needs were met. I must admit though, that the thing I enjoyed the most in both years was enjoying the lunch served to us and listening to the chosen keynote speaker. Overall, I think that MSC has presented me with a great opportunity to work with my classmates to achieve things beyond what we ever expected. If I had the chance, I would definitely choose to participate again. - Gabriel Ting ‘12
T
he Measurements Science Conference was a journey, not of big thrills or buzzer beaters, not of drowsy chaperones and songs, and not even of heavy science. The MSC was journey of experience and dedication. I have applied to be part of the MSC family since the end of sophomore year. I remember the last day of the 2010 school year where Dr. Harjani kept us in talking about it. I was just eager to leave so I can enjoy the final day of the year. But, that day started a journey that I will keep with me as I move on to college. I wanted to create projects that relate measurements to fun and exciting everyday life situations. In my two 11
years of MSC I have played sports and tested people’s hearing, compared sports equipment, and people’s lungs through a coke bottle. These projects seem fun and I would be willing to do all of it over again as long as we can get that relaxing heavy meal and comedy hour reception in the end. I did this for the journey of an experience and it was worth it. - Eldrin Masangkay ‘12

Did You Know? HS is the very first school in the state to have a UC approved Accounting course. Written by Mrs. Susan Beckenham, it has become the model by which all other schools that teach Accounting are measured. Mrs. Beckenham, Department Chair for Information Science and Business Technology and Director of the Technology Focus Program, began writing courses for UC approval after attending the very first UCCI (University of California Curriculum Institute). As a result of that Institute, we now have our Business Statistics course, also UC approved. The UCCI is a “boot camp” where a select handful of teachers and administrators are cloistered for 5 days and given the tools to create courses that not only have the rigor that the UC requires, but also the creativity and challenge of very special courses that combine the UC’s a-g with CTE (Career Technical Education).

After 27 and 21 years respectively, Mrs. Jan McLaughlin and Mrs. Mary Lubeley are retiring! While the Providence community will miss their daily presence, we wish them well and thank them for their many years of dedicated service to the students of Providence High School!
Mrs. Beckenham has now become a facilitator for the UCCIs, and will be participating in the next Institute in April. Not only that, but she has also become a guest speaker for the UCOP, speaking at several conferences, training sessions, and institutes. In addition, she will be creating three courses through a grant from NAF (National Academy Foundation) concerning business education.

PHS Varsity Basketball Teams Secure Liberty League Championships
M
uch is to be celebrated as Providence’s boys’ varsity basketball team shattered records and came within points of securing the title of CIF-SS Division 5A champs! The only time PHS won a CIFSS championship was in 1986 when the baseball team, led by future MLB All-Star Jeff Cirillo ‘87, won the championship.
Senior Catherine Saint was named All CIF 5AA and All Area by the Burbank Leader & Glendale NewsPress. PHS Athletic Director and Head Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach Andrew Bencze ‘89 was named high school girls’ baskteball Coach of the Year by the Glendale News-Press.
After a successful and record-breaking season, the boys traveled to Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana where they played for the CIF title against Holy Martyrs, a team the Pioneers beat twice during the regular season. The excitement and anticipation of the game grew as the teams ended up in overtime, and Providence eventually succumbed to Holy Martyrs with a final score of 65 to 62. Freshman varsity standout player, Marcus LoVett, had quite a successful season. Averaging 32.4 points per game and netting 1,036, the highest reported point total for a ninth-grader in state history, Marcus was named State Boys Player of the Year by ESPN, All Area by the Burbank Leader & Glendale News-Press, Newcomer of the Year by the Los Angeles Daily News, All State Freshman by Cal Preps, and All American Freshman by Max Preps. Senior Patrick Gonzalez was chosen to play in the prestigious Valley Sports Foundation All Star Game, where he made four out of five three point attempts and finished with 12 points. Not to be outdone, the girls’ varsity basketball team also finished a successful season - the most successful season in school history! The girls ended the season with a 27-6 record, and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division V-AA semifinals for the first time in school history. The team traveled to San Luis Obispo to take on the number one ranked Mission Prep and unfortunately, lost. The team certainly has much to be proud of!

Message From Our Director of Advancement
T
his has been quite a memorable year for Providence High School! From the history making basketball teams to all the awards and accolades won by our media focus program, our choir, and our theatre program, the 20112012 school year resonates with success. Behind every successful endeavor, there are loyal supporters, donors, and volunteers giving of their time, their talents, and their treasures.
will begin. These two new exciting realities are made possible because of donations. Your charitable gifts to PHS have a direct impact on the success and future prosperity of this great school. We are certainly becoming all we were intended to be. It is our mission and our passion to honor the Sisters by moving this great institution into a bright future. With your help all that is good will become great and all that is a dream will become a reality. You can support PHS through our Annual Providence Fund, our Family Pledge Program, our named scholarship program, and our Annual GALA. You can also name PHS in your will or trust.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting Providence High School. Your generous contributions continue to honor the legacy of the Sisters of Providence. When we all work together great things happen…and they are certainly happening here at PHS.
Again, thank you and have a safe and blessed summer! Paul Kaminski Director of Advancement
