In this new combined issue of the foundation’s newsletter Connections and the Annual Report, you will discover stories, images and names of the people of Providence Little Company of Mary – physicians, nurses, administrators, volunteers and you – our friends. The cornerstone of these stories was laid more than 50 years ago by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary as they were invited in 1956 to build a hospital in Torrance. Groundbreaking took place on December 19, 1957, followed by the dedication of Little Company of Mary Hospital on January 3, 1960. Decades later in 1992, Little Company of Mary joined with San Pedro Peninsula Hospital, and then in 1999, entered into co-sponsorship with the Sisters of Providence. Today, the Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers San Pedro and Torrance stand poised to provide care far into the 21st century. Philanthropy remains the foundation for our long-term success as we approach the 2010 golden anniversary of the Little Company of Mary Sisters and their healing presence. Our ability to sustain this rich heritage of compassionate care, using sophisticated technologies in the finest of facilities, has always been related to the support of our community. Thank you for your gifts which are crucial to continuing our mission for your good health.

Our Mission: As People of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit “No one expects their newborn to be in intensive care, so when it happens, the parents need us to help them through this stressful time. I’ve been a nurse at Little Company of Mary for 38 years and I’m so excited to be a part of the beautiful new NICU! The private rooms will truly make a difference in promoting the babies’ growth and healing.”

Respect for the Smallest Ones New Level III NICU First in Los Angeles to Offer Private Rooms

The dreams of expectant parents and grandparents are usually full of hope and images of a happy, healthy baby – or two. Tours of hospital birthing suites, evenings spent at childbirth and baby care classes, weekends devoted to painting the nursery or shopping for a crib are all part of the preparation, but rarely does anyone anticipate their baby will need care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). If faced with those circumstances, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is prepared as it is poised to open the first NICU in Los Angeles offering private rooms for the babies. The 20-bed unit – which can accommodate up to 30 infants, including multiple births – allows baby, family and staff the benefits of privacy, space and the newest in technology and healing environments. Veteran nurse manager Judy Wolstein spent several years researching NICUs across the country in order to contribute to the final design. “This is

“With the help of people just like you and me, Little Company of Mary has thrived. What better friendship can you offer than giving to our community medical center? It’s quite an accomplishment to be opening the first NICU in Los Angeles to offer private rooms.” Chris W. Caras, Providence LCM benefactor and trustee alumnus

a dream come true,” said Wolstein. “Our nurses already do an excellent job, but the privacy of individual rooms will enhance the interactions between families, doctors and nurses, and promote the babies’ healing and growth.” In addition to new G.E. Giraffe isolettes and Dash cardio/respiratory monitors, features of the private spaces include: customized sound, temperature and light controls; padded, reclining “kangaroo” chairs enabling skin-to-skin cuddling between the parents and babies; bedside computers on wheels for charting and individualized medicine storage; an isolation room and fully-equipped special procedure room. For the weary parents, a few comforts of home can be found in the family room with a comfortable lounge, private bath, shower and small kitchen. Thanks to the friendship of philanthropists like Chris and Joan Caras and others, the new NICU offers respect and privacy for both baby and parents – just what the doctor ordered.

Our community would truly be at a loss without those weekly visits. Our school seeks out partners in serving our families, and Little Company of Mary always comes through. With so many parents losing their jobs, the need is even greater.

Taking the Mission on the Road Partners for Healthy Kids: Driven by Philanthropy since 1994

Five-year-old Art Ricardo doesn’t know what it means to be afraid of the nurse at school. He’s visited certified nurse practitioner Pat Dahlberg, R.N., on the Partners for Healthy Kids mobile pediatric van before – times when his mother Nereida was truly worried that something was wrong. This time he confidently leaps up from the blacktop onto the van steps in front of Nereida, who carries his baby sister in her arms. “I’ve been bringing Art to the Partners van since he turned two, and now I bring the baby,” said Nereida. “This is the place where I feel best informed and reassured when something seems seriously wrong with the kids. Nurse Pat makes sure I ‘get it.’ She doesn’t rush and she really cares about the kids.” Since its inception in 1994, the Partners van – funded solely through private gifts and community grants from foundations and

corporations – has cared for more than 30,000 underserved and uninsured children. The clinic travels to nine elementary and two middle schools, and one high school within the communities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Wilmington, Lawndale and San Pedro. In 2008, the program impacted 2,236 children, providing diagnosis, treatment and referral for acute medical conditions, health education and immunizations. Award-winning Dahlberg has dedicated over 13 years of her nursing career to this community outreach program and calls every day an adventure. “My passion for teaching children and families comes alive on the van,” she explained. “Our team hopes to improve a child’s life by supporting families when they need us most. After the crisis subsides, we navigate the health care system with them so eventually they can help themselves.”

Top-notch Imaging Close to Home Jean Vachon Legacy brings New Imaging Technology to San Pedro

You can have it all when you need it. New imaging technology, a highly-trained group of radiologists, technicians with years of experience, a warm and friendly staff, plus a parking spot – all found at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro. A $4 million bequest from the estate of grateful patient Jean Vachon brought technological advances to the San Pedro campus. Vachon credited the medical center’s emergency care with saving her life. (She died in 2006.) New imaging technology includes the NM-GE Infinia Dual Detector nuclear medicine camera and the CT-GE BrightSpeed Elite computerized tomography scanner, both of which are housed in fully-upgraded imaging rooms offering patients top-notch diagnostic equipment in the safest of settings. Nuclear medicine and computed tomography combine to deliver unprecedented image quality,

“Thanks to philanthropy, this new imaging technology has enhanced the quality and efficiency of our services. Over 10,000 CT and nuclear medicine procedures are performed annually and we still have the capacity to grow and offer services that were previously unavailable” Sandra Edson, Imaging Director, Providence LCM Medical Center San Pedro

critical for accurate and timely diagnosis of cardiac disease and other ills. Dr. David Feldman, chairman of the fourperson radiology group practicing on the San Pedro campus, not only appreciates the quality of the new equipment and environment, but also feels a strong affinity to the family of physicians serving the hospital. According to Feldman – who has practiced medicine in Los Angeles for close to 20 years, including over three years in San Pedro – both physicians and patients tend to come to the community, stay and remain loyal. “We do a first-rate job here with a warm and friendly staff, excellent physicians and quality equipment,” said Feldman. “Because we are a smaller facility, there is a strong likelihood that the patient will actually meet the doctor. The quality of the referral staff is excellent, and people tend to come here and stay.”

R o n Bit z e r Director of Major and Planned Gifts “Professors of medicine observe that we live in the “golden age” of medicine. Sacrificed in this advancement of knowledge can be the more personal side of the patient-provider relationship. Providence Little Company of Mary stands apart from this trend. Our planned giving program takes its stewardship responsibilities very seriously, and I have the privilege of working with very dedicated and skilled physicians, nurses and administrators.”

Gifts for the Future – Planning Now Mrs. John Infantino and the Charitable Gift Annuity

Palos Verdes Estates resident Maude Infantino and her late husband John were looking for intelligent ways of charitable giving. Fortunately, they met Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation’s Ron Bitzer who directs the practice of planned giving. Bitzer blends his knowledge of people and their needs with his knowledge of taxation and the gift agreements available to benefit both the donor and Little Company of Mary. The Infantino’s had always been interested in helping children. Their planned gift in the form of a charitable gift annuity fulfilled their wish to give, simultaneously providing them with a fixed lifetime income, plus significant immediate and long term tax benefits. “Children face great challenges today,” Maude said, “and John and I had always been interested in helping the most vulnerable ones. Ron has been helpful in guiding us so that we could make a difference.”

“Providing charitable gifts to Providence Little Company of Mary means that our excellent medical centers and community services will continue to benefit from advances in medical knowledge and then deliver that advanced knowledge in a caring and compassionate way.” Ron Bitzer

Gift: Charitable Gift Annuity Goal: • receive fixed income for life • avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your appreciated property • enjoy the benefit of tax savings from a charitable deduction How It Works: You transfer your cash or appreciated property to Little Company of Mary in exchange for the promise to pay you fixed income for the rest of your life (rates based upon age). Benefits: • charitable tax deduction • fixed income for life • partial bypass of capital gain • possible tax-free payments To request a one-page personal illustration or for more information, please contact Director of Planned Giving Ron Bitzer at 310.514.5330 or ron.bitzer@providence.org

I am pleased to introduce the 2008 Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation annual report. With more than $9 million in total revenue for the year, Little Company of Mary Foundation continued to benefit from the same community support that led to its successful Legacy Campaign. This tradition of philanthropy in support of health care has never been more important. The strength of our medical centers is magnified by the depth of our benefactors. It is your gifts that ensure the continuation of our fine facilities, advanced technology and compassionate concern for patient safety and excellent care. Let me point out two remarkable achievements accomplished by the people of Providence Little Company of Mary. First, our San Pedro campus is honored to be the only location in the South Bay to carry the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. Second, the Torrance medical center announced its fourth quarter 2009 opening of the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit — the first in LA County to offer private rooms for babies. I encourage each of you — trustees, donors and friends — to take the time to visit us, meet some of the amazing nurses, physicians, staff members and, of course, the Sisters who have dedicated their lives to help the sick and the dying, the poor and the vulnerable. Their reputation in the South Bay and Harbor area communities is second to none. Thank you for all you have done to continue the legacy of the Little Company of Mary Sisters, as well as the Sisters of Providence. May our faith in God, our commitment to those in need, and our ability to persevere in both good and challenging times, guide us to the vision the Sisters had when arriving in Los Angeles over half a century ago. On behalf of all of the Trustees, thank you for your gifts both now and in the future. Sincerely,

Bruce Ferguson Chairman, Board of Trustees Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation

After the loss of my husband Nick, I went through a very difficult time, and there was an outpouring of love from staff and volunteers that I could never replace.” – Matilda Baccari, President, Providence LCM Medical Center San Pedro Auxiliary

“I am proud to say that this auxiliary has been serving the hospital for 50 years!
