For the first time in the history of Providence College athletics, more than $4 million was raised to support our student-athletes. As loyal Friar fans, you know your support is coming at just the right time. Friar athletics is at a tipping point with the rebirth of the BIG EAST Conference and expansions to the Hockey East Conference. These changes bring new opportunities to our athletic department and, thanks to your generosity, we are better positioned to compete for championships. We are putting the final touches on a renovation to Schneider Arena that will place it among the premier collegiate ice hockey complexes in the nation. A track has been built on campus so our cross country team can train for their next national championship. Our lacrosse team now has a state-of-the-art training facility, our pool has undergone a complete transformation, and plans are in place to upgrade the facilities of every sports program at Providence College. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a food drive at the men’s basketball game versus NJIT. Student-athletes collected over 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food items to benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

The women’s ice hockey team partnered up with Skate for Joy to help launch an Inner City Ice Hockey Club. Skate for Joy is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing ice skating to inner-city under-served children.

On September 8, 2012 the Friar swimming and diving programs joined hundreds of swimmers in the 3rd annual Swim Across America-Rhode Island Open Water Swim to help raise money to fight cancer. The money raised by the swim helped fund the cutting edge research done at Providence’s own Women and Infants Hospital.

The men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, women’s ice hockey and softball programs hosted “Pink Out” games to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. The money raised will help increase breast health education and generate funding for local breast health programs.

C H A M P I O N S I N T H E C L AS S R O O M • 166 Providence College student-athletes were named to the annual BIG EAST All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the honor, a student must have competed in a BIG EAST sponsored sport while attaining a minimum GPA of 3.00. • 19 student-athletes from the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs were named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete had to achieve a GPA of 3.00 or better to be named with this honor. • Seven Friar volleyball players were named to the America East Fall Honor Roll. Student-athletes had to earn a grade-point average of 3.00. • Ten of the College’s 15 programs finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and 71 student-athletes made the Dean’s list. • During the Spring 2013 semester, Providence College student-athletes posted a combined GPA of 3.09. • The women’s tennis team achieved the highest combined GPA for the Spring 2013 Semester, earning a 3.46 team GPA. • The men’s swimming and diving team posted the highest combined GPA with a 3.17 for the 2012 Fall Semester.

The premier fundraiser for Friar Athletics, the 2012 Cox Sports Friar Golf Classic raised over $140,000.

VISION CUP GOLF TOURNAMENTS On October 1, 2012 and May 23, 2013, the Providence College

men’s basketball Vision Team held its Annual Vision Cup golf tournaments at Newport Country Club in Newport, RI and The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT. The sold out events were both a tremendous success for the men’s basketball program, raising over $130,000. The funds from the events will specifically help to fund charter flights for the upcoming season.

More than 75 alumni, parents and friends of the men’s and women’s soccer programs participated in this year’s golf outing and more than $10,000 was raised.

9TH ANNUAL THE RINX WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY GOLF TOURNAMENT

This year’s outing raised over $13,000. Participants included Canadian National Team Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse ’12, former All-American Kelli Halcisak ’04, former Olympian Sara Decosta ‘00 and numerous other Friar greats.

More than 100 alumni, parents and friends of the program participated in this year’s outing, raising a record $9,000 for the program.

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

On Friday, February 15, 2013, Providence College Athletics inducted nine members and the 1995 NCAA Champion Women’s Cross Country Team into its Athletic Hall of Fame at the Renaissance Hotel in Providence. The 2013 inductees included Dickey Simpkins ’94 (men’s basketball), Cindy Curley ’85 (women’s hockey), Mike Boback ’92 (men’s hockey), Keith Kelly ’01 (men’s cross country/track), Roger Haggerty ’86 (baseball), Karen Krawchuk ’91 (field hockey), John Farren ’86 (men’s soccer), Maria McCambridge ’98 (women’s cross country/track) and Bob Foley (women’s basketball coach). The College also inducted the 1995 women’s cross country team, who captured the school’s only NCAA team title. The eight members of the cross country team were honored at the ceremony (Marie McMahon `95, Maria McCambridge `98, Krissy Haacke `97, Gladys Ganiel `99, Susan Murnane `97, Moira Harrington `95, Sarah Dupre `99 and Meghan McCarthy `96). While the evening served as a refresher course on what the inductees achieved over three decades, College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 focused on how the honorees took what they accomplished at PC and transformed themselves into ambassadors for the College. “What athletics gave you at PC, you have turned into successful and meaningful lives. That’s far more important than what you did here,” said Father Shanley. “That also tells me that our continued investment in athletics is an investment for the future. As president, I’m grateful for that.”

ALUMNI HALL/MULLANEY GYMNASIUM DEDICATION

Providence College celebrated the grand re-opening of Alumni Hall/ Mullaney Gymnasium on Friday, November 9, 2012. Providence College President Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 christened the building during the halftime ceremony of the women’s basketball season opener against Drexel University. Over the past year, Alumni Hall underwent a massive renovation, which includes new seating, scoreboards, video boards, sound system, air conditioning, ceiling and many other amenities for media and television.

WOMEN’S FIELD HOCKEY AND SOFTBALL LOCKER ROOM RENOVATIONS

The renovation of the field hockey and softball locker rooms was made possible by the generous gifts of alumni, family and friends of both programs. The new field hockey facility had its ceremonial opening on October 27, 2012, following their senior game against Louisville. The softball program unveiled their new locker room on April 20, 2013 after a double header versus Georgetown.

TRIBUTES TOM STONE MAKES WISHES COME TRUE IN FRIARTOWN

The Providence College men’s basketball team and Friar fan Tom Stone teamed together with A Wish Come True, Inc. to grant wishes for children ages 3 through 18 who have a life-threatening illness and live in Rhode Island and areas of southeastern Massachusetts. Stone generously donated two of his court-side season tickets to Wish children and their parents for every home men’s basketball game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The children attended the game, met the players and coaches post-game and received an autographed team photo. On Monday, February 25, 2013, the men’s basketball team invited all of the children and their parents to Alumni Hall to attend a VIP practice and dinner. After practice the children were able to talk and take photos with their favorite Friars and received all of the players’ autographs. “Meeting the children and their families, and giving them the opportunity to meet our players was not only heart-warming, but inspirational,” Head Coach Ed Cooley said. “It was an honor and a privilege to work with an organization that has helped all of these children’s wishes come true.”

SANDY HOOK On Tuesday, December 18, 2012 the Providence College men’s basketball team wore green uniforms in a home game versus Colgate to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

ARMED FORCES APPRECIATION NIGHT STANDING TOGETHER On March 2, 2013 the men’s basketball team honored local

military members, veterans, and their families to thank them for their service. The game honored members from different groups, such as the RI National Guard, the Family Assistance Center and The RI House of Veteran Affairs.

HOOPS FOR THE STARS PROGRAM This year marked the fifthconsecutive year that Providence College and the National Grid Foundation have teamed up to sponsor the Hoops for the Stars program. Through this program, 5,500 tickets to Providence College men’s and women’s basketball games were provided to Providence students who exhibited leadership and a commitment to excellence in the classroom.

YOUTH PLAYERS JOIN THE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY, LACROSSE AND VOLLEYBALL TEAMS

The men’s ice hockey and lacrosse teams recruited their newest members of the Friar Family this past year through the Team IMPACT program. The very nature and essence of this program lends itself particularly well to the concept of paying it forward. Most athletes in the program are moved as they learn about their youngest teammate’s medical journey and the courage they’ve shown in facing such adversity at such a young age. Along with the men’s ice hockey and lacrosse programs, for the past three years the Friar volleyball program has teamed up with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation to welcome a young girl with a pediatric brain tumor onto their squad. Since joining the teams, Kevin, Ethan, and Anastasia have spent lots of time at practices, going trick-or-treating with teammates, watching various Friar sporting events, and sitting with the injured players during games. These young players have quickly become an integral part of these programs and have developed a newfound confidence and comfort as a result of this special treatment and status.

BIG EAST IS REBORN: Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 served as the

primary spokesperson when the new-look BIG EAST Conference was unveiled during a New York City news conference on March 20, 2013. PC and six other Catholic Schools (DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall, St. John’s, and Villanova) will carry the BIG EAST name and identity into the future. They will be joined initially by Butler, Creighton, and Xavier to form a 10-team league comprising similar institutions with basketballcentered athletics programs. Bolstered by a 12-year, $400 million television contract with FOX Sports, the new BIG EAST began formal operations in all conference sports on July 1, 2013. Under the broadcast partnership, FOX Sports will have television rights to a wide range of marquee BIG EAST basketball games, including the annual Big East conference tournament, which will continue to be played at New York’s Madison Square Garden. At the conclusion of the press conference, Father Shanley stated, “In building upon our firm traditions of spirited competition, intense rivalries and high achievement in intercollegiate sports, the Big East will continue to be a source of tremendous excitement for our students and alumni, as well as millions of fans across the nation.”

NOTRE DAME AND CONNECTICUT SET TO JOIN THE HOCKEY EAST CONFERENCE

Notre Dame and the University of Connecticut have accepted an invitation to join the Hockey East Association in the sport of men’s hockey. Notre Dame will join the league starting with the 2013-14 season as the 11th member school in the conference. Connecticut’s membership in the men’s league will put the conference at 12 teams for the 2014-15 season. The addition of these two institutions will help with the continued growth of a league characterized by great tradition and outstanding programs. Eight out of the last 20 national champions have come from the Hockey East Conference.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS CALABRIA AND LEARY HONORED FOR GENEROSITY TO FRIAR ATHLETICS On Saturday, January 19, 2013 Joe ’65 and his wife Sugar Calabria and Bill ’60 and his wife Emily Leary were honored during the men’s basketball game versus Villanova for their unprecedented support of Providence College. This year both the Calabria’s and Leary’s lifetime giving to Providence College surpassed $1 million. “The generosity of the Calabria’s and the Leary’s has taken Friar athletics to a new level. Their legacy can be seen in the facilities they have built and their impact transcends these projects to impact our student-athletes, coaches and fans every day. Joe, Sugar, Bill and Emily have truly become ingrained in the Friar family and it is people like them that make Providence College such a special place” said Athletic Director, Bob Driscoll.

NEW ENGLAND IS IN FRIARTOWN Tom May ‘92 flew in from California to make a leadership donation to name an office in the men’s basketball suite. During his visit, Tom and Assistant Director for Athletic Development Kevin Connolly ‘04 went to the Patriots game and attended a VIP postgame dinner with the team.

FRIARS HOST FRIARS IN GREENWICH, CT On Wednesday, May 22, 2013, Providence College alumni and current Board of Trustee Member Karl ’88 and his wife Kerry ’88 Anderson hosted a meet and greet for PC Alumni who live in the Connecticut area at their home in Greenwich, CT. Attendees were introduced to Head men’s basketball Coach Ed Cooley along with Head lacrosse Coach Chris Gabrielli. Food was provided by the Pizza Truck Company which specializes in on-site Napolitano style fresh brick oven pizza and gelato desserts.

Before the start of every men’s basketball home game, children of season ticket holders between the ages of 8-12 have the opportunity to join the men’s basketball team on the court of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center during pre-game warm-ups. The kids give players a high five when the starting line-up is announced.

TOM ’77 AND MARJY ’78 PALAMARA MAKE LEADERSHIP GIFT TO WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY Tom Palamara’s connection with Providence College women’s ice hockey dates back to the start of the program when Palamara was named the first Head Coach of the Providence College women’s ice hockey team when he was just a sophomore at PC. The Palamara Family has pledged to name the Head Women’s Ice Hockey Coach’s Office in the renovated Schneider Arena. This six-figure gift will help fund the facelift that Schneider Arena has undergone to ensure that Friar women’s ice hockey has the facilities it needs to attract high caliber student-athletes and bring championships to Friartown. “We are proud to make this donation to support Friar women’s ice hockey. Year in and year out our teams compete for championships on the ice while preparing for their careers in the classroom. Providence College continues to be a leader in women’s ice hockey and it is an honor for us to be part of providing the current and future athletes with an amazing state of the art building and the opportunity for continued success. Our athletes deserve the very best our school and alumni can offer and it is with great pride that we make our leadership gift,” said Tom Palamara.

MIKE ‘86 AND MAURA ‘86 CHAPEY MAKE HISTORIC GIFT TO FRIAR ATHLETICS On April 23, 2013 Providence College Athletics was proud to announce the largest gift from an individual who is not a member of the Board of Trustees. Mike and Maura Chapey, both PC graduates from the class of 1986, made the historic $1 million gift to support the construction of a state-of-the-art lacrosse and soccer complex. “This gift symbolizes what Providence College means to us,” Mike Chapey said. “I really enjoyed my experience on the lacrosse team. We are excited about the direction of the program and the opportunity to be a part of building a championship lacrosse program at PC.” “PC has been and will always be an important part of our lives,” Maura Chapey added. “It is so exciting for us to see the next generation of PC students making the most of their opportunities and the administration’s passion in creating a place where they can do that.” The field of the new lacrosse and soccer complex will be named Chapey Field in honor of their generous donation. The facility will be located next to the renovated Schneider Arena.

F U T U R E FAC I LI T I E S SCHNEIDER Providence College’s 40-year-old Schneider Arena, home of Friar ice hockey, has undergone a huge transformation this past year. The

expansion and upgrading project began in November and is scheduled to be completed in September 2013. The cornerstone of the project is a new 30,000 square foot ground-up addition which will house a new lobby, ticket office, additional concessions, men’s and women’s varsity locker and training rooms, a varsity lacrosse locker room, strength and conditioning facilities, coaching staff offices and mechanical and operations rooms for rink staff. The project also includes renovations to the existing arena, including premium seating upgrades, video boards, improvements to the press box, renovated youth hockey locker rooms and a showcase of the history of Friar hockey. On March 11, 2013 the “Topping-Off” ceremony for the final beam of the Schneider Arena renovation project took place. The men’s and women’s hockey coaching staffs along with various school administrators and construction workers were on hand as the final beam was moved into place following a blessing from Providence College President, Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80.

Field, where PC is building an outdoor track for use in training the Friars’ highly successful track and field and cross country teams, while also providing intramural, recreational, and exercise opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. The women’s cross-country team finished 2nd in the nation this year. Both the men’s and women’s teams once again boasted several All-Americans.
