DIANE MADL

Diane Madl became the program's sixth head coach all-time on February 4, 2002 and will embark on her 16th season with the Friars in 2017. Madl and her staff have enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in program history.

The Friars are coming off of successful 2016 campaign, during which the team compiled a 13-6 overall record, including a 5-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence finished in a tie for second place in the conference HEAD COACH standings and claimed the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Field Hockey Cham16th SEASON pionship. Three of the Friars' six losses during the season were decided by ALMA MATER: CONNECTICUT '89 one goal, including two double-overtime games vs. Northeastern (1-0) and 14th-ranked Boston College (2-1). Providence compiled a 5-2 record overall in games decided in overtime, including a 4-0 mark vs. BIG EAST opponents. The Friars' seven overtime games in 2016 tie the program's single-season record. Adrienne Houle became the 11th player in program history to earn All-America honors, as a member of the Longstreth/NFHCA All-America Second Team. Four players earned All-BIG EAST post-season recognition, including three players who were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. The Friars' three First-Team selections are tied for the most in program history during a single season. Providence also had three First-Team honorees in 2006, 2007 and 2014.

Providence has qualified for the four-team BIG EAST Championship in seven of the last 11 seasons under Madl's guidance. The Friars captured the BIG EAST Conference regular-season title in 2006 and advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament twice (2006, 2007).

During Madl's first three seasons on the sidelines, the team still played on a grass surface.

During that initial stretch, the team posted a 26-33 record, while attempting to change the culture of the program under its new leadership. In 2005, Providence field hockey started a new era with the opening of the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, which has recently been renamed Lennon Family Field. The complex is a state-of-the-art Astroturf facility that has helped to springboard the program back on to the national scene.

The Friars' run of success began in 2006 in what is described as one of the most celebrated seasons in program history. The Friars posted an 18-4 overall record and captured the BIG EAST Conference Regular-Season title. Providence's 18 victories in 2006 are tied for second most all-time in program history, while the Friars' five league victories mark a program best. The program quickly found itself among the nation's best and was ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll for nine-consecutive weeks, including seven-straight weeks in the top15. At season's end, the Friars earned a final ranking of 11th. Madl was honored as the BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year, Dita/NFHCA Division I Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Words Unlimited Coach of the Year.

That same year, Lauren Sickel and Rachel Chamberlain became the first Friars since 1997 to claim All-America honors, as A QUICK LOOK AT COACH MADL both players were named to Hometown: Mountaintop, Pennsylvania the third team. Chamberlain Alma Mater: Connecticut, 1989 was tabbed BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and was one of five players to earn Coaching Experience: All-BIG EAST honors and NFHCA All-Region honors.

USA Field Hockey Level III Coaching Accreditation, 2009 The ride continued in 2007, as PC posted a 14-8 overall record, including a 4-2 mark Head Coach • Providence College, 2002-present in the BIG EAST. The Friars advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game for the secondAssistant Coach • Univ. of Maine, 1993-2001 straight year, after defeating No. 11 Louisville, 2-0, in the semifinals. The Friars dropped a, Head Coach USA/Canadian Challenge Cup (U-19), 2005 1-0, decision to No. 4 Connecticut in the championship game the next day.

Assistant Coach U.S. Olympic Development Select/ In 2008, the Friars advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the third-straight season Futures Elite International Easter Tourn. (U-16), 2007 after posting a 12-9 overall record (3-3 BIG EAST). Four Friars earned All-BIG EAST and/or Futures Development Invitational Camp, 2004-2006 NFHCA All-Northeast Region accolades at season's end. Nellie Poulin became the ninth Friar Asst. Coach New England/Boston Senior HPTC, 2006-12 in program history, and third player under the direction of Madl, to earn All-America honors B-Camp, 2004 as a member of the Third Team. Poulin went on to represent New England for the secondNational Team Experience: straight season at the U.S. Field Hockey High Performance Women's National Championship Olympic Games • Atlanta, Georgia - 1996 (2009), and finished as the tournament's top scorer with five goals in six games. Jaime Lipski Champions Trophy - 1995 joined Poulin on the New England team in 2009 and earned herself an invitation to U.S. Inter-Continental Cup - 1989 and 1995 Junior National Camp. Lipski was the first player to earn a Junior National Camp invitation World Cup - 1990 under Madl's tutelage.

World University Games - 1989 The 2009 season featured one of the most challenging schedules in the nation and the Collegiate Playing Experience: team finished the year with a 10-10 overall record (3-3 BIG EAST). Of the Friars 10 losses, University of Connecticut, 1985-1989 eight were decided by one goal, including five, one-goal losses to opponents ranked in the Honors & Awards: top-10 of the national poll. Providence made its fourth-straight appearance at the BIG EAST Two-time All-America selection, 1987-88 Field Hockey Championship, but fell to then-No. 5 Syracuse, 2-1, in the semifinals. The Friars Honda Broderick Award winner, 1989 concluded the season ranked 23rd in the NCAA RPI and were ranked as high as No. 19 in the Inducted into Luzerne County Hall of Fame, 2005 NFHCA National Coaches' Poll. Poulin earned All-America honors for the second-straight BIG EAST Coach of the Year, 2006 season as a member of the NFHCA Second-Team, and became one of just four players in NFHCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year, 2006 program history to earn All-America honors multiple times.

Words Unlimited Female Sport Coach of the Year, 2006 The Friars had two uncharacteristic seasons in 2010 and 2011, during which the team Inducted into Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame, 2008 posted a 5-13 mark in 2010 and a 4-14 record in 2011. Three Friars earned All-BIG EAST honors during the two-year stretch.

FIELD HOCKEY STAFF In 2012, the Friars recorded a 9-9 mark and finished tied for third in the BIG EAST Conference with a 3-3 record. Seven of the Friars' nine losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents. Four of those matches were decided by one goal, including three in overtime. Henni Tietze was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and Caitlin Malone earned Second Team recognition. Tietze and Malone also were named to the NFHCA All-Northeast Region Second Team.

The 2013 season featured seven games vs. teams ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll. The campaign started with a 2-1 overtime victory over 11th-ranked Northwestern, but the Friars lost seven of their next 11 games. Five of their opponents during the stretch were nationally-ranked, while the remaining two losses came vs. teams who finished the year in the national poll. The Friars completed the season with an 8-10 overall record. Five of the program's 10 losses were decided by one goal, including four in overtime. Caitlin Malone earned All-BIG EAST First-Team honors, while Tietze and Daniella Bernasconi were selected to the Second Team. Bernasconi and Malone represented Providence on the NFHCA All-Northeast Region Second Team.

In 2014, the Friars posted an 11-9 overall record and finished fourth in the BIG EAST Conference (2-3). The squad earned a berth to the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship for the second time in the last three years. The Friars fell to eventual conference and NCAA Division I champion Connecticut, 3-1, in the semifinals at Lennon Family Field.

Malone became the 10th player in program history to earn All-America honors as a member of the NFHCA Division I Third Team. Five Friars were earned All-BIG EAST honors, marking the most honorees in a single season since 2007. Malone was a unanimous selection on the First Team and was joined by Bernasconi and Tietze. Goalkeeper Deidra Clymer and freshman forward Megan Hamilton were named to the Second Team. Hamilton burst onto the scene offensively for the Friars during her rookie season and scored a team-best 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. Using available records dating back to the 1987 campaign (spanning the last 28 seasons), Hamilton’s 36 points are the most recorded by a rookie at Providence College. She led the Friars with five multi-goal games and netted two game-winning goals.

In 2015, the Friars posted a disappointing 4-14 record, despite holding the advantage in shots versus 10 of their 18 opponents and also edging 11 of their 18 foes in offensive penalty corners. Six of the Friars' losses were decided by one goal, including a 1-0 loss to 14th-ranked Michigan and a 4-3 overtime loss to ninth-ranked Liberty.

Four players earned All-BIG EAST recognition, led by Adrienne Houle, who was named to the First Team. Hamilton, Clymer, Emma Mackie and Emma Lucas all were honored on the Second Team. Houle also was named to the NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team.

During Madl's 15 seasons on the sidelines, she has helped to mentor five players, who earned All-America honors a total of six times.

She also has helped to develop a total of 47 All-BIG EAST selections and 37 All-Northeast Region honorees. More importantly, her teams have competed just as fiercely in the classroom. Madl has had the privilege of coaching 43 student-athletes who have earned NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors a total of 84 times, and 89 players who have been named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team a total of 184 times.

Madl, a native of Mountaintop, Pa., was a three-sport stand-out in field hockey, basketball and softball at Crestwood High School. Upon completion of her high school career, she went on to play field hockey at UConn from 1985-88. While at UConn, she helped the Huskies capture the National Championship in 1985. She was a two-time All-America selection (1987, 1988) and earned the Honda Broderick Award upon the completion of her career, as the top collegiate field hockey player in the nation. Madl also earned Academic All-America honors and graduated magna cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1989.

Madl went on to play for the U.S. National Team and competed in a multitude of events for Team USA, including the World University Games (1989), World Cup (1990), Inter-Continental Cup (1989 and 1995) and the Champions Trophy (1995). She reached the pinnacle of her playing career in 1996 as a member of the U.S. National Team that competed in the Olympic Games, held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Madl remains active with Futures, having coached the U-19 team in the USA/Canadian Challenge Cup (2005) and assisted the U-16 team that participated in the U.S. Olympic Development Select/Futures Elite International Easter Tournament in the Netherlands (2007). Madl also has served as an assistant coach for USA Field Hockey High Performance Women's National Championship New England Team (2006-2008), and assisted the team at the New England Training Center in 2009 prior to the Women's National Championship. In 2010 and 2011, Madl continued her involvement with HPTC as an assistant at the training center for Boston's Senior Team, under the new format for the Women's National Championship. She returned to the sidelines as an assistant for ALL-TIME COACHING RECORDS New England at the Women's National Championship in 2012. She continues Linda Mathinas 1976 (1) 4-5 (.444) to assist with training sessions for high performance leading up to what is Mary Beth Alexander 1977-1978 (2) 16-9-2 (.629) Kate Denning 1979-1984 (6) 56-46-4 (.547) now known as the Young Women's National Championship each summer.

Jackie Barto 1985-1997 (13) 163-93-22 (.634) Madl earned her U.S. Field Hockey Level III Coaching Accreditation in Bill Davidson 1998-2001 (4) 30-50 (.375) 2009, which is the highest coaching accreditation in the U.S. system. With the Diane Madl 2002-present (15) 140-152 (.480) accreditation, Madl is eligible to work with the U.S. National Team programs.

1976-present (41) 409-355-28 (.534) Madl's coaching career began at the University of Maine as an assistant in 1993.

She remained with the Black Bear program for nine seasons.

Lisa Wasser Lopes was named assistant field hockey coach at Providence College on March 16, 2011. Wasser Lopes will embark on her seventh season with the Friars during the 2017 fall campaign, and fourth as the associate head coach. She is involved in the day-to-day operations of the field hockey program, including practice planning, on field coaching, individual workouts and video analysis. Wasser Lopes also spearheads the Friars' recruiting efforts.

Wasser Lopes came to Providence after two seasons as an assistant coach at Miami University (Ohio). While at Miami, she served as the recruiting coordinator and assisted with the day-to-day operations of the field hockey program, including game preparation, scouting, practice planning, individual instruction, video analysis and team and individual scheduling.

She also managed all facets of team travel for the program. She helped guide the Red Hawks to two-consecutive MAC Championship games (2009, 2010) and the program's first-ever MAC Regular-Season Title in 2010. Wasser Lopes was instrumental in the recruitment of the Red Hawk's rookie class during the team's successful 2010 campaign, of which five were members of the starting line-up and were important contributors.

In addition to her experience at Miami, Wasser Lopes also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at NCAA Division III Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. While there, she helped lead the Colonels to a school-record 18 wins and a No. 20 national ranking during the 2008 campaign.

Wasser Lopes also spent four years coaching with the International Field Hockey Club of Kentucky and two years coaching the Valley Styx Club. She spent six years working with the USA Field Hockey Futures Program, and in 2009 gained experience as a clinician at the National Coaches' Convention, where she presented as part of a defensive drill panel.

During the summer of 2012, Wasser Lopes served as a selector for the National Futures Championship for the U-16 division. She also earned her U.S. Field Hockey Level II Certification. During the summer of 2013, Wasser Lopes participated in the NCAA Women Coaches Academy from June 24-28 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Wasser Lopes was a four-year stand-out at Louisville from 2003-2006. She was a three-year team captain during the 2004, 2005 and 2006 campaigns, during which time she also earned All-BIG EAST Second-Team honors twice (2005-06). As a senior, Wasser Lopes was named to the NFHCA Division I AllWest Region First Team. She was a Second-Team All-West Region selection in 2005 and earned Louisville's Female Anthem Leadership Award. During her first two seasons at Louisville, the Cardinals were members of the MidAmerican Conference. During that time, Wasser Lopes was named All-MAC First Team (2004) and earned a spot on the MAC All-Tournament Team (2004).

Wasser Lopes was a two-time Team MVP and played in the 2006 NFHCA Senior All-Star Game. In addition to her success on the playing field, Wasser Lopes excelled in the classroom. She was a four-time NFHCA National Academic Squad honoree and two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.

A native of Dallas, Pennsylvania, she attended Lake-Lehman High School.

Wasser Lopes earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and special education from Louisville in 2007, and completed her master's degree in instructional technology from Wilkes in 2009. She and her husband, Sam, who is entering his third season as head coach of the Providence women's soccer team, were married in June 2015. The couple has one son, Jax, who was born in July [2016].

Kathi Weidman begins her fifth season as an assistant with the Providence College field hockey program, and second year as an assistant coach. She spent the previous three seasons as a graduate assistant (2012-14). Weidman, who played for the Friars from 2009-12, assists with the day-to-day operations of the field hockey program, and works with the goalkeepers.

During her goalkeeping career, Weidman appeared in 44 games. As a senior, she played 1,116 minutes in the cage and recorded a 0.722 goals against average and a 2.01 goals against average, while making 83 saves and posting two shut-out victories.

Weidman was a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star selection and was named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad as a senior. During the summer of 2012, Weidman was a member of the U.S. Field Hockey High Performance Training Squad (New England).

Weidman attended Penn Manor High School prior to her arrival on the Providence College campus. While at Penn Manor she posted a 50-6-1 career record, including 31 shut-out victories.

Weidman graduated in May 2013 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She completed her master's degree in counseling at the College in 2016.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING 15th SEASON ALMA MATER: VERMONT '92

ATHLETIC TRAINER 1st SEASON ALMA MATER: COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON '14

Kenneth White is in the midst of his 15th year with the athletic department as the head strength and conditioning coach.

White, who came to Providence from Stony Brook University, handles all the strength and conditioning requirements of the Friars' 19 varsity athletic teams. At Stony Brook, he was appointed as the first strength and conditioning coach in the program’s history. White was responsible for the design and implementation of training programs for all 20 of Stony Brook’s varsity sports.

White also was the strength and conditioning coach at St. Bonaventure University from 1997-99 and served as a graduate assistant at Columbia University for two years.

White received a bachelor’s degree from Vermont in 1992 and later earned a master’s degree in 1999 from Columbia. White is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He also has a Club Coach/Olympic Weightlifting Certification from USA Weightlifting.

Grace Popham joined the Providence College Sports Medicine Department as an assistant athletic trainer in July 2017. At Providence, she works directly with the field hockey and softball programs.

Popham came to Providence after serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Stony Brook (2016-17). While at Stony Brook, she worked with women’s soccer and spring football.

Prior to her time at Stony Brook, Popham spent the 2014-15 school year as an assistant athletic trainer at Bryant University. She was the primary athletic trainer for volleyball and women’s lacrosse. She also served as the host ATC for the 2015 Northeast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championships.

A native of Bristol, R.I., Popham earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the College of Charleston in 2014, where she served as a student athletic trainer.

Popham earned a master’s degree in nutrition at SBU, is a licensed athletic trainer in both Rhode Island and New York and is BOC certified. She is also a certified American Heart Association Health Care Provider in first aid, CPR and AED, is an American Red Cross certified life guard and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association.

LaPoint joined the College in 2000 as Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator. In 2006, she was promoted to Associate AD for Administration and Assistant Vice President/Executive Associate AD during the 2008-09 academic year. In 2016, LaPoint was elevated to Deputy Athletic Director.

LaPoint is responsible for administering and managing a variety of varASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT sity sports programs, including women's basketball, field hockey, volleyball DEPUTY ATHLETICS DIRECTOR and softball. Ultimately, LaPoint ensures that the athletic programs run in a ALMA MATER: LOCK HAVEN '89 consistent fashion with institutional, NCAA and BIG EAST Conference policies. She also assists in the overall administration of the department and provides input on such key matters as gender equity, student-athlete welfare, long-range planning and women's issues.

In addition to fulfilling her current list of responsibilities, LaPoint will serve as acting Athletic Director in Driscoll's absence, and also will represent Driscoll, the athletic department and the College at various meetings on and off campus. LaPoint currently serves on the BIG EAST Conference Senior Woman Administrator Committee and the BIG EAST Field Hockey Sport Championship Committee. She also served on the NCAA Field Hockey Committee since 2010 and was the Committee Chair for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

LaPoint, a 1989 graduate of Lock Haven University, was an Assistant Athletic Director at Brown University for two years prior to her arrival at Providence.

While at Brown, she was the primary administrator for four Division I intercollegiate athletic programs, Director of the Club Sports / Intramural Programs, as well as the Director of Physical Education and University Recreation Programs.

She began her career in athletics as the head field hockey coach at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. in 1992. While at Juniata, she was promoted to the post of Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator. LaPoint worked in those positions until 1998 when she assumed the role of Assistant Athletic Director at Brown. In 1992, LaPoint earned her master's degree in exercise and sport studies at Smith. Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College — the only institution of higher learning in North America that is conducted by the Order. Providence College has steadily moved to a position of national prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population.

Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to 1216, or the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain.

Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spreading the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, to teach at every level of the United States educational system.

With the Dominican tradition as its foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented education. To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, offering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Students may choose from some 60 concentrations ranging from computer science to labor relations to theatre arts.

In addition, qualified students who wish to structure a program not specifically provided under the regular concentrations may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college.

As part of the core curriculum, all students take a two-year, team-taught course, Development of Western Civilization (DWC) which integrates the study of literature, philosophy, history and religious studies through the ages into a cohesive interdisciplinary unit.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION The mission of the Providence College Intercollegiate Athletics program is to foster the personal development and education of young men and women through their participation in NCAA Division I athletics.

Athletic contests provide an opportunity for the campus and the community at large to demonstrate their support of the College, its athletics program, and the student-athletes.

The Athletic Department strives to fulfill student-athlete needs and goals in an environment steeped in the Dominican tradition in which honesty, integrity, mutual respect, effort and constant improvement are cherished and cultivated.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES LENNON FAMILY FIELD

Lennon Family Field, formerly known as The Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, is home to the Providence College field hockey team. This $6-million facility is one of the top athletic complexes to house field hockey in the Northeast, and the surface was replaced in the spring/summer of 2017. The complex opened in August of 2005 and was renamed Lennon Family Field during the spring of 2011. Since its opening, the Friars have enjoyed some of their most successful seasons in program history. Providence hosted the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship at the facility in 2009 and 2014, and will host it for a third time in 2017. The watering system consists of six cannons - one in each corner of the field and two at midfield. Lennon Family Field also is used for intramural and recreational sports at the College, though the field hockey program is the only varsity athletic team to call the venue home. A new surface was installed during the summer of 2017.

THE CONCANNON FITNESS CENTER • RUANE ATRIUM

The Concannon Fitness Center is a $15-million facility, which opened in August of 2007. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. It houses the Friars' Jimmy Walker Strength & Conditioning Center as well as offices, conference rooms and locker rooms.

The multi-level facility also houses a wide variety of nautilus, cardiovascular and free-weight equipment, which is open to the student body. Memberships also are available to the local community, alumni, faculty and staff.

The varsity weight room is designed for use by student-athletes only, and is located on the first floor. The majority of the strength and conditioning curriculum is conducted in the facility - in addition to the Astroturf field, the Peterson Recreation Center and Taylor Natatorium.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES JIMMY WALKER STRENGTH & CONDITIONING CENTER

Located in The Concannon Fitness Center, the varsity strength & conditioning facility is a 3,600 square foot area dedicated to the Friars' 19 intercollegiate athletic teams. The facility houses over 10 tons of free weights, including dumb bells ranging from five to 150 pounds and a full set of kettle bells. All hand weights, iron plates and bumper plate sets are engraved with one of the College's athletic logos. There are six Power Racks, each with an Olympic Weightlifting platform. These training stations are extremely versatile and allow numerous athletes to perform a variety of exercises simultaneously. The facility also houses 'tools' such as stability balls, medicine balls, resistance bands, weighted vests, weighted jump ropes, plyometric jump boxes, dot drill mats, slide boards, lateral slant boards, lateral skaters, agility ladders, hurdles and numerous apparatuses to develop trunk strength and core stabilization. There also are two Woodway high performance treadmills that max out at 16.5 miles per hour.

CANAVAN SPORTS MEDICINE CENTER

The Canavan Sports Medicine Center opened during the 2007-08 academic year and became fully operational in August 2008. The center is the primary sports medicine facility for each of the College's 300+ student-athletes and its working space is roughly 4,000 square feet. This state-of-the-art facility includes nine treatment tables with assorted modality equipment and office space for the eight certified athletic trainers on staff. The space also provides two physician clinic offices, where primary care, orthopedic, chiropractic and podiatric physicians evaluate our student-athletes on a weekly basis. There also is a large rehabilitation/exercise area in the facility that houses a SwimEx rehab pool, one eight-person hot plunge pool and one eight-person cold plunge pool. During the 2011-12 academic year, the sports medicine center added and Alter-G Treadmill to its list of rehabilitation equipment.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES CHAPEY FIELD AT ANDERSON STADIUM

On April 23, 2016, Providence College Athletics officially dedicated Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, the new state-of-the-art facility for the men’s and women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams. The stadium features seating for over 1,500 fans, chair back seats, a new press box and two luxury boxes for entertainment. In addition the stadium also has new locker rooms for home and visiting teams and a 13HD Daktronics video board.

RAY TREACY TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX

The Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex serves as the primary training facility for the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. The complex has a six-lane lane track with eight-lane straightaways, which encompasses a turf field. The turf field is used by rugby and other intramural sports. The complex has seating for more than 300 fans, as well as a press box and a scoreboard.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES SCHNEIDER ARENA

Opened in 1973, Schneider Arena underwent a massive renovation that culminated in a Grand Reopening in 2013. The renovation turned Schneider into one of finest on-campus facilities in the country, and included a 30,000 square-foot addition. Highlights of the addition and renovation include a new atrium, ticket office, concession stands, coaches' offices, shooting room, locker rooms, meeting rooms, athletic training room, press box, five luxury suites, dasher boards, glass, video boards, video ribbon boards, scoreboards, a renovated Friends of Friar Room and a strength and conditioning facility. Schneider Arena was dedicated and is named in memory of the late Reverend Herman D. Schneider, O.P., the founder of the Friars' highly successful hockey program and a long-time member of the school's faculty. The faciltiy also serves the needs of the Providence College club hockey team and intramurals, in addition to many of Rhode Island's youth and high school hockey teams as well as junior hockey programs.

GLAY FIELD

Glay Field opened in April of 2016 and is home to the Friars' softball team. ATHLETIC FACILITIES HELEN BERT STUDENT-ATHLETE LOUNGE

On January 20, 2007, the Providence College athletic department welcomed members of the late Helen Bert's family to celebrate the opening of the Helen Bert Student-Athlete Lounge, located on the second floor of Alumni Hall. Prior to the Friars' game against Marquette on that day, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony. Bert's family also was presented with a gift honoring the late Helen Bert during a halftime ceremony. The event was attended by friends, family, administrators and faculty, along with the presence of countless alumni. The Helen Bert Student-Athlete Lounge provides an area for all varsity studentathletes to study in a quiet setting. During the 2008-09 academic year, the lounge was renovated and expanded. It houses seven computer work stations, one print station and a seating area for group projects and meetings.

PETERSON RECREATION CENTER

The Peterson Recreation Center is located adjacent to Alumni Hall and is connected to The Concannon Fitness Center. The facility includes a four-lane indoor track, four regulation length basketball courts and two indoor tennis courts. The Peterson Recreation Center also houses a dance/workout studio and racquetball courts. The facility serves as a home for many of the recreational activities sponsored by the College and to a series of summer camps and College functions.

TAYLOR NATATORIUM

Taylor Natatorium is located in the Peterson Recreation Center adjacent to Alumni Hall. Taylor Natatorium is home to the Providence College men's and women's swimming & diving programs. Men’s lacrosse appeared in the BIG EAST Tournament for the second-straight year and finished third overall in the league standings. The Friars tied a program record with 10 wins and advanced to their first-ever BIG EAST Championship Game after defeating No. 15 Villanova, 10-7, in the semifinals. Tate Boyce earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year honors, while Jarrod Neumann was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. The duo also earned USILA/ Nike Third Team and Second Team All-American honors, respectively. The Providence coaching staff, led by Head Coach Chris Gabrielli, was named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.

Women’s cross country captured its third BIG EAST title in the last four years and eighth title in program history, while moving on to secure its fourth NCAA Northeast Regional crown in the last five seasons. The Friars earned its 27th NCAA Cross Country Championships berth, finishing 13th overall at the event. Brianna Ilarda, Sarah Mary Collins, Millie Paladino, Abbey Wheeler, and Katie Lembo earned All-Northeast Region honors after finishing in the top-25 at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet. Ilarda and Paladino also made NCAA appearances during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Ilarda earned First Team All-America honors in the indoor 5K and outdoor 3K steeplechase, while Paladino was named a First Team All-America in the indoor mile and Honorable Mention honors in the outdoor 1500m.

Men’s cross country finished 24th overall at the NCAA Championships and placed fourth at the NCAA Regionals in 2016. Julian Oakley appeared in the 5000m at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-America recognition.

Providence College ranked 79th in the final Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, marking the 13th time that the Friars finished inside the top-100, including three of the last four years. Providence finished third among NCAA Division I non-FBS/FCS institutions and second among BIG EAST Conference members. The Friars picked up a total of 252.00 points. The men’s soccer program picked up the most points for the Friars (73) by virtue of its impressive run to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

This impressive run kicked off when the 2013 women’s cross country team claimed the College’s second NCAA Championship. It continued with the men’s basketball team won the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament title and advanced to the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Tournaments. The men’s hockey team made backto-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2014 and 2015) for the first time in program history before claiming its first NCAA Championship with a dramatic, come-from-behind win over Boston University on April 11, 2015 at the TD Garden. It marked the College’s third NCAA team title and its first in a men’s sport.

A year after making it to the NCAA Second Round, the men’s soccer team won the program’s first BIG EAST Tournament title in 2014 and went on a run to the NCAA College Cup semifinal, marking the furthest it has advanced in the NCAA Tournament. Also in 2015, Emily Sisson became just the third Friar all-time to claim multiple NCAA titles in the same academic year, winning the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 5,000-meter championships. She also set the NCAA indoor record in the 5,000 meters en route to capturing the 2015 BIG EAST Championship (15:12.22).

For the second time in his tenure, Driscoll was recognized as the Under Armour I-AAA Athletics Director of the Year at the 51st Annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention in June 2016. In June 2008, Driscoll also was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for the Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention.

The Friars also have excelled in the classroom, with Providence’s student-athletes combining for an average GPA of 3.17. After a school-record six Providence College athletic programs received Public Recognition Awards in 2014 as part of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) program, three Friar teams earned the honor in 2015 and two teams, women’s swimming & diving and women’s tennis, earned recognition awards in 2016. Multiple Friar teams have been honored in each of the 11 years the NCAA has given out the Public Recognition Awards. ADMINISTRATION a third-consecutive season, was named the USTFCCCA Division I Scholar Team of the Year and senior co-captain Emily Sisson was named the BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Aside from excelling in the classroom and competing for championships, Driscoll’s student-athletes are very active in the local community. Last year alone, Friar student-athletes combined for over 3,500 hours of community service.

Driscoll was instrumental in positioning the College’s athletics program for success as a member of the reconfigured BIG EAST Conference, where the Friars compete against top-flight academic and athletic institutions in a new era of rivalries built on rich athletic traditions. The BIG EAST and its membership have a long-term television contract with FOX Sports and its marquee men’s basketball championship tournament at Madison Square Garden. Seven of the league’s 10 members, including Providence College, competed in the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, securing its status as one of the premier basketball conferences in the nation. Additionally, Friars hockey competes in the Hockey East Association, considered by many to be the top hockey conference in the nation.

One of the biggest impacts Driscoll has had on the Providence College Athletics Department, and the College as a whole, has been with facility development, construction and renovation. Since his arrival in 2001, Driscoll has transformed the College’s athletics facilities. Construction was completed in the fall of 2015 to build Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, where the men’s and women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse programs play, as well as a new softball field and tennis courts. Men’s lacrosse finished with a 6-5 record at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in 2017, which also played host to the BIG EAST Lacrosse Tournament and the USILA North-South All-Star Game. Men’s soccer also played host to a BIG EAST Semifinal and a NCAA First Round game at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium last season. Women’s soccer finished 7-3-0 in their inaugural season at Anderson Stadium in 2016.

In December 2015, the College announced a historic gift to begin Phase I construction of the Ruane Friar Development Center, which will include a men’s basketball training and recruiting facility in addition to the College’s academic services space. Groundbreaking for the Ruane Friar Development Center took place on Oct. 1, 2016 in a ceremony held outside Alumni Hall. Phase I construction is expected to be completed by fall 2018.

In September of 2013, a state-of-the art renovation and 30,000-square foot addition project to Schneider Arena was completed. The project included new locker rooms, new coaches’ offices, a renovated press box, a state-of-the-art video board and sound system, luxury boxes, as well as a new hockey and lacrosse strength and conditioning room. The Ray Treacy Track was built over the summer of 2013 to give the men’s and women’s cross country and track programs an improved place to train and race, as well as serving the whole Providence College community. Taylor Natatorium also underwent extensive renovations in 2013.

Other facility upgrades that have highlighted Driscoll’s tenure include an $80-million renovation of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, which serves as the home venue for Friars men’s basketball. The project was the result of Driscoll working strategically with lead officials in the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island. The renovations enhanced the game-day experience by adding 20 luxury boxes, new seats, a video scoreboard, sound system, updated restaurant and concession stands, team store, locker rooms and new weight training/fitness areas. These renovations have enabled Providence College to serve as host for the First and Second Rounds of the 2010, 2016, and the future 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. In September of 2012, renovations of Alumni Hall were completed. Alumni Hall, which is the practice facility for men’s basketball and the home of the Friar women’s basketball and volleyball teams, is now a state-of-the-art facility.

Kicking off Driscoll’s vision for the improved athletic facilities footprint at Providence College, the Concannon Fitness Center, opened in August of 2007, adjacent to Lennon Family Field (Astroturf facility), which was completed in August 2005. A new Astroturf surface was installed on Lennon Family Field in the summer of 2017. The Fitness Center houses the Friars’ Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center for varsity student-athletes, as well as administrative and coaching offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. Additionally, the Concannon Fitness Center serves the whole Providence College community and houses the recreation sports staff, furthering the bond between the campus community and Friar Athletics. Next, the Canavan Sports Medicine Center was completed in August of 2008.

Driscoll established the athletic fundraising philosophy and department that has been instrumental in making program upgrades possible. He and his staff have exceeded fundraising goals on a yearly basis, including a record $6.6-million in cash donations during the 2016-17 fiscal calendar. The additional revenue remains critical to building and supporting championship programs and providing the best opportunities to Providence College’s student-athletes.

The funds Driscoll and his staff raise help directly support all 19 of Providence College’s Division I programs, the Friars Forever Fund and capital projects.

In the past, Driscoll has served as the President of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. He also has served as First Vice President and Second Vice President for the organization. Additionally, Driscoll represents the BIG EAST’s athletic directors on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, serves as a mentor for the Division I-AAA mentoring program and serves on the Hockey East Television Negotiations and Marketing Committees. He previously served on the NCAA Division I Management Council, the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship Committee (Chair 2010-11) and was the Chair of the BIG EAST Athletic Directors in 2011-12. Driscoll also was an NCAA Fellows Programs Executive Mentor. Currently, Driscoll serves on the BIG EAST Finance Committee with the league’s other presidents and also is a Chair for the Hockey East Board of Directors.

Driscoll joined the Providence community after 14½ years in athletic administration at the University of California, Berkeley, culminating in serving as the Acting Executive Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. Prior to that, he was Cal’s Executive Associate Athletic Director and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department, as well as overseeing football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s water polo, rugby, strength training, equipment and the sports medicine programs.

Driscoll was hired at Cal as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, a position he held for five years. He then assumed the position of Executive Associate Athletic Director, at which point he was responsible for the administration of 27 varsity sports, a staff of 250 and a $36 million budget. Prior to coming to Providence, he served as the Acting Executive Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. During his tenure, Cal won over 20 national championships and competed in the Citrus, Copper, Alamo and Aloha Bowls. The Bears also finished as high as 12th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup. Before arriving at Cal, Driscoll served six years (1981-87) as the Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Intramural Sports at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Prior to Mills, Driscoll was Assistant Athletic Director and Head Baseball and Hockey Coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. from 1977-81. Driscoll played hockey and baseball at Ithaca College (N.Y.), where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1974. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education/Psychology of Sports from Ithaca in 1975.

A native of West Concord, Mass., Driscoll was inducted into the inaugural class of Concord-Carlisle High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame (football, ice hockey and baseball) in 1993. He and his wife Cathy have three grown children.

ACADEMIC SERVICES SERVICES AVAILABLE TO STUDENT-ATHLETES THROUGH ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SERVICES Academic Monitoring Progress report slips (i.e., requesting information regarding class attendance and performance) are sent to each instructor for all student-athletes at least once per semester. The staff tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with studentathletes as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary.

Counseling/Mentoring The staff meets with student-athletes, individually and in-groups, regarding academic, athletic, career, and/or personal issues.

Life Skills Program/Special Projects Programs and workshops on select life skills (i.e., NCAA/CHAMPS Life Skills Program) are presented, covering the following five component areas: academics, personal development, community service, athletics, and career development. The OAS has collaborative relationships with many units on campus to help provide these services.

Pre-Registration The staff assists student-athletes with planning and course registration. In conjunction with the Office of Academic Records, dates are determined for preregistration each semester.

Study Hall Quiet, monitored study time is available, during daytime and evening hours.

Student-athletes are required and/or recommended to attend, on a sport-by-sport basis, by their respective head coach.

Travel Notifications At the beginning of each semester, student-athletes are provided with letters for their instructors, notifying them of travel/competitive schedules.

Tutorial Services and The Writing Center The Tutorial Center, which is nationally certified by the College Reading & Learning Association, provides peer tutoring in most all subject areas. The Tutorial Center is open until 9:00 pm weeknights. The Writing Center provides more intensive and specialized writing support and also maintains evening hours for student-athletes’ convenience.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SERVICES The Office of Academic Services (OAS) provides specialized support to student-athletes in light of the unique time demands, responsibilities, and rules governing participation in intercollegiate athletics. Holistic services are provided in a safe, personal environment where academic growth is a priority, personal development and independence are enhanced, and long-term success is nurtured by a staff which models these same commitments.

Student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom, as well as on the field or court, may be nominated for the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team, the HOCKEY EAST Academic Honor Roll, NFHCA Division I Academic Team or the Academic All-America Program presented by CoSIDA. The Providence College Athletic Department also honors studentathletes each semester who have achieved a 3.00 grade point average or higher.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Providence College is a Catholic, Dominican, liberal arts institution of higher education and a community committed to academic excellence in pursuit of the truth, growth in virtue, and service of God and neighbor.

To be eligible for a bachelor’s degree, members of the Classes of 2013, 2014, and 2015, must earn a minimum of 116 earned credit hours and complete at least 36 courses with a minimum value of three credits each.
