Why Compromise?

Brookhaven by Wood-Mode is affordable and great quality. Call or visit our show room and see for yourself.

Fall into Shopping I will tell you this right now: I am dreading the end of summer. If I can’t be on the beach, or on a patio overlooking the beach, then life just isn’t the same for me. While I prefer my weather as hot and sunny as possible, if I had to concede one good thing about the change of season, it would be the clothes. Sure there’s the harvest and the scenery, but really, there’s fall fashion. When it’s chilly, there’s no better feeling than the warm, cozy sensation of bundling up in comfy sweaters and soft scarves. And, of course, bundling up in clothing that’s brand

new. This month, treat yourself (and your home) to a new wardrobe, courtesy of our Shopping Guide, full of fun, independent boutiques all over South County. It’s going to be one stylish season.

Feedback Surf South County It’s so nice to see so many women and girls out there [“Surf’s Up,” August 2015]. When I started [surfing] in the ‘80s there were so few! So much fun! Scout’s Honor Camp Yawgoog celebrates 100 years of the great outdoors Camp Yawgoog was founded

Photo by Yawgoog Reservation Director Tom Sisson

in 1916 as “A Scout Adventureland, Forever.” One hundred years may not quite be forever, but it’s certainly a long time that’s worth recognizing. This summer, Yawgoog, the country’s second oldest continuously run Boy Scout camp, celebrates its 100th consecutive season. “Not many institutions last 100 years,” says Congressman Jim R. Langevin (D-RI), who visited Yawgoog in Rockville last month. “It’s great to know that scouting still has such a positive impact on young people and teaches them to be responsible, independent and involved members of the community.” Not surprisingly, a lot has changed at Yawgoog over the last century. In its first season, 250 scouts attended the camp situated on the 130-acre Palmer Farm. This summer however, Yawgoog’s 200-person staff hosted around 6,000 scouts on its 1,800acre reservation. Yawgoog originally began as one camp – Three Point – but added two more camps – Medicine Bow and Sandy Beach – as its popularity grew. “The camp has really passed the test of time,” says John Mosby, Executive/CEO of the Narragansett Council, to which Yawgoog belongs. Yawgoog has thrived because of its commitment to the timeless elements

of scouting, said David Preston, a spokesman for the Narragansett Council, but it must continue to evolve.

“You’ve kind of got to take the best of the old and adapt it with new technology and put it together with something that’s relevant for the boys but is also timeless,” David says. For example, Yawgoog added a merit badge on robotics this year and will look into adding a merit badge on drones. Any great Boy Scout camp needs great rangers to keep the camp in tip-top shape, and Yawgoog, no surprise, has had its fair share. “For people to have the sight to continue with the camp and to keep buying land… is remarkable,” says Paul Forbes, who became Yawgoog’s ranger in 1996 and still works with the camp. “The right people have always been there to keep the camp on the right path.” Albert Gunther, who worked for Yawgoog for more than 36 years, was one of these great rangers who helped build and maintain the camp. In 1962, three years after Albert had been hired as ranger, Red Sox legend Ted Williams visited the camp and

was immensely impressed; he was so impressed, in fact, that he offered Albert a job to work with him. Luckily for Yawgoog, Albert declined. The camp has also produced several famous alumni, including Governor Bruce Sundlun and Senator John Chafee who shared a special relationship thanks to a near-death experience Sundlun faced at camp in the 1930s. “Governor Sundlun fell through the ice and Senator Chafee saved him with a hockey stick,” David explains. “The governor always said that the reason why Senator Chafee was able to save him was that he had paid attention to the life saving classes and knew exactly what to do.” Although the camp will celebrate its accomplishments this summer and will continue to do so next summer, the children attending Yawgoog has been the camp’s primary focus. “The camp is just trying to provide the best possible experience for the boys that come through every week,” David says. www.yawgoog.org –Jack Nicholson September 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Making the case for September beach days

Though the weather may be cooling down, that certainly doesn’t mean that beach season is over quite yet. Skip the crowds, pricey summer beach admission and parking fare – they’re free after Labor Day – by taking a relaxing September beach day. Many of Rhody’s prettiest beaches are still open through mid-September and into October. So grab some friends or your family, and take advantage of South County’s lovely coastline without the tourists or the cost. Atlantic Beach Park Open through October, this beach and

The Annual Mist to Mews canoe and kayak race

Save the Bay needs volunteers for Rhode Island’s International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 19. Over 80 cleanups with be held up and down 60 miles of Rhode Island shoreline, but those beaches won’t clean themselves. More than 2,000 volunteers will be needed to keep our coastline looking picturesque. If you want to lend a hand, but your Saturday is booked that week, there are additional cleanups happening throughout the month. www.savebay. org/icc. On September 27 set sail for the

Annual Mist to Mews canoe and kayak race. Now in its 25th year, the 6.5mile race starts at the Ocean Mist on Matunuck Beach, with a finish line at Mews Tavern. A barbecue buffet will be waiting for racers at Mews, as well as music and raffles. All of the proceeds of the day’s festivities will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. The entry fee costs $40 or $60, depending on which race class you enter into. 10:30 am, 895 Matunuck Beach Road, Wakefield. is the closest you can get to living in the past. Colonial Era houses, preserved farms, historic museums – we have it all. But as much as we love the quiet walking tours and flipping through info pamphlets, sometimes it’s better to just appreciate the atmosphere with a glass of beer in hand. Wouldn’t you know it, RI has a plethora of old-school bars where you can enjoy the historic ambiance without all the fuss. First and foremost is the White Horse Tavern. It’s not just the oldest tavern in Rhode Island – it’s the oldest in the country (not up for argument!). If you want to grab a bite to eat as well, and you’re a foodie who pledges allegiance to farm fresh ingredients, this place has been serving farm-to-table since 1673. Yeah,

try to beat that. 26 Marlborough Street, Newport. 849-3600. Though the bar itself has only been in this space for 16 years, the Wild Colonial provides an authentic, centuries old feel. The walls are exposed brick, the tables are dark wood and the building sits in perfect view of the Providence WaterFire, not to mention it’s a stones throw from plenty of historic East Side architecture. 250 S Water Street, Providence. 621-5644. Tracing its roots back to 1760, the Carriage Inn and Saloon (Originally a stagecoach stop named “Old Acres”) building has seen several different owners in the last century. In 2013, it was re-bought and re-designed to showcase its original stonework and rustic elegance. 1065 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. 294-8466. –Nicolas Staab

Long before America ran on Dunkin’

No matter where you live, there’s a tea service nearby to add a little posh to your afternoon by Barbara Pommerleau

or barista was a household word, the high-society set got their caffeine fix with an afternoon tea party. Reputedly an invention of the Duchess of Bedford, friend and Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, to bridge the gap between the customary 11am lunch and 8:30pm dinner of the times, the traditional light meal would generally consist of a smorgasbord of finger sandwiches, scones with cream and lemon curd, assorted pastries and, of course, a pot of tea. The genteel Afternoon Tea is not to be confused with High Tea, which, despite its regal sounding name, refers to the early evening meal of the working classes and more often than not was a plate of uninspired meat and potatoes. It became quite fashionable by the late 1800s both to host and to attend these gatherings, and an entire school of etiquette sprung up around the “proper” way to take your tea (note: pinky-finger up is a definite don’t). Nowadays, with a drivethru on every corner, a formal tea is more of a novelty than a necessity, but if you are looking for something a bit more sophisticated than a vending-machine candy bar to tame your mid-afternoon munchies, there are still plenty of places right here in Li’l Rhody where you can get your fill of old-world charm and elegance.

What better place to find a proper Victorian tea service than the summer playground of the well-heeled of that era? Options abound in Newport, if you know where to look. One Bellevue at the Hotel Viking offers their afternoon tea every day from 2-4pm. Choose from the Classic Tea for $15.95, which includes sandwiches, scones, tea breads and truffles; or make it a Royal Tea for $24.95 and enjoy a glass of champagne or Kir Royale with your spread. For the tea newbie, they also offer a hosted Gilded Age Tea, weekends from January through March, which includes instruction in proper tea etiquette and a glass of champagne for $17.95. 1 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. 848-4824, www.hotelviking.com

Dunked in History Based on the famous name alone, you know you’re in for a special treat at the Vanderbilt Grace. Offering tea year-round on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4pm, this historic luxury hotel offers an assortment of sandwiches, crumpets, scones, chocolate profiteroles and other fine desserts for $18.95. Or, really treat yourself and for $29.95, add a cocktail, bonbons and chocolatecovered strawberries. Call for reservations. 41 Mary Street, Newport. 846-6200, www.gracehotels.com/vanderbilt

If warm and cozy is more your style than prim and proper, head over to the Spring Seasons Inn Tea Room on Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm. Select your own antique teacup to drink from before settling into the living room and relaxing to soft piano music as you partake in an array of tea sandwiches, lemon bars, petit fours and other decadent desserts, as well as homemade scones and cream, for $17.95. For the smaller appetite, there is also a Cream Tea available (scones and a choice of teas). The services are offered seasonally, on the weekends from May until around Christmas, or you can arrange for private parties for 12 or more any day of the week. While you are there, stop by their gift shop, which features an assortment of teapots and cups, loose teas, small gifts and jewelry. 86 Spring Street, Newport. 849-0004, www.springseasonsinn.com

Steeped in Style When you are looking to impress your guests with fantastic views of the Atlantic and a setting that screams high class, look no further than the Ocean House in Watch Hill. From Friday through Sunday, 3-5pm, you will be treated to a medley of sandwiches, scones and pastries for $24 (or add champagne for $38) while you relax in the Living Room, complete with comfy couches and chairs and a roaring fireplace. “Resort casual” attire is required, see website for details; reservations are strongly suggested. 1 Bluff Avenue, Westerly. 584-7000, www.oceanhouseri.com

Levels of Luxury Even if you are not looking to make a day trip of your tea party adventure, there are still plenty of places for the city folk to choose from within the typical Rhode Islander’s ten-mile-radius comfort zone. For a truly unique experience, head to the Treehouse Tavern and Bistro in Warwick, and choose to take your tea in any one of their five distinctive dining environments, from the “tree house room” to the piano room to the library to the outdoor garden. Tea service is offered Tuesday through Saturday, by reservation only. Depending on your appetite and your mood, enjoy a Sweet Tea including scones and assorted pastries for $19.50; add a variety of finger sandwiches and savory hors d’oeuvres to make it a High Tea for $32.50; or go all in with the Royal High Tea for $47.50, which includes all of above, plus champagne, wine or a cocktail, as well as a fruit and cheese course. 1094 Centreville Road, Warwick. 821-1105, www.thetreehousetavern.com

Good Things Come in Three Also in Warwick, you will find Trinity Confections, a small eatery serving an array of soups, salads, quiche, sandwiches, scones, cookies, cakes, tea, coffee and lemonade, all for $25, all made in-house, from scratch. Teas are held by reservation only; call and speak to Janine to arrange your private party. Services are offered Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-4pm. While you are there, be sure to pick up some of their delectable sweets and fine French and Belgian chocolates, as well as other goodies from their retail shop. Gateway Shopping Center, 1625 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. 681-4902, www.trinityconfections.net

Sip at the Snuggery The Duck and Bunny in Providence has already built up quite the devoted fan base with their beyond-adorable décor and delicious crepes and desserts, but did you know they also offer a full tea service, all day, every day, along with their regular menu? For $18 per person, snack on an assortment of tea sandwiches, scones, cookies and, of course, their famous mini-cupcakes. The D&B also offers an Afterschool Tea on Tuesdays through Fridays from 3-5pm, with kid-friendly sandwiches made with such favorites as peanut butter and jelly (for the less refined palate), and caffeine-free teas for headache-free moms. 312 Wickenden Street, Providence. 270-3300, www.theduckandbunny.com

Woodees The sister shop to Woodmansee’s, Woodees is next door and equally enhances the streetscape of historic downtown Westerly’s Broad Street. Just like its “big sister,” Woodees windows remind you of the fashion and accessories you just can’t live without (you can, but why would you?). Example: tanks and tees that proclaim, “Mermaids Have More Fun.” And “Wake up. Kick Ass. Be Kind. Repeat.” Follow them on Instagram for the latest arrivals (@woodees_boutique). Who is a Woodees girl? “One who dresses for themselves with exceptional confidence all while maintaining a youthful, flirty personality with a bit of a wild side while making their dreams come true.” ‘Nuff said. 33 Broad Street, Westerly. 596-0200, www.woodeesri.com

Woodees brings fashion forward flair to Westerly

Woodmansee’s Few shops in this country can tout more than a century of experience, but this Westerly boutique, located right on the square in the heart of downtown, is proud of its heritage and commitment to brands made here in the USA. In that same vein, you’ll find fair-trade clothing, jewelry and accessories from small, artisan designers and one-of-a-kind pieces by local artists. Their picture-perfect window displays resemble a magazine cover showcasing everything from casual duds to polished ensembles for a night on the town. 27 Broad Street, Westerly. 596-2310, www.woodmanseesri.com

Crosswynds Traders Hey, how does a curated collection of well-known brands at discount prices sound? Add to that the absence of an overcrowded mall and you have this longtime Narragansett fashion outpost featuring an assortment of tops, bottoms, dresses and accessories for women by brands like Anthropologie, PacSun, Banana Republic, Fabletics, Lilly Pulitzer (you never know what you’ll find!); there’s a smaller but varied selection for men and a section for local love with “Narragansett” and “Bonnet Shores” swag. STROLL AND SHOP

Wickford Ask people who live and work in this historic village what their address is, and they’ll be sure to say “Wickford,” in lieu of “North Kingstown,” the town in which the village resides. With a Rockwellian feel (complete with Main Street) bolstered by charismatic 18th century dwellings (one of the largest collections in the northeast), mom and pop shops and restaurants emit a palpable charm. It’s easy to see why people flock here to experience a slower pace. Well known for the Wickford Art Festival, a juried fine art festival featuring more than 200 fine art artists from New England for more than 50 years, the village celebrates its whimsical ways and eclectic offerings. Perched on a natural, well-protected harbor inviting quintessential New England milieus (think: sailboats bobbing in the lapping waves, patio dining overlooking the harbor, a weatherworn arched bridge and lobster boats unloading their daily catch at the local seafood conglomerate), Wickford is a gem of a place.

Different Drummer With its oversized nine-pane windows at the Rockwellian intersection of Main and Brown Streets always designed in head-turning seasonal fashion, this boutique draws serious shoppers and curious meanderers alike. Handcrafted jewelry is a staple with everything from coastal-inspired pieces to Native American styles by Desert Moon, Spanish pieces from Uno de 50 and coveted Trollbeads. Paper lanterns, handcrafted pottery, stained glass, adorable Christmas tree ornaments, home décor and artful pieces, kitchen goods (who doesn’t want a whimsical Zoku popsicle mold?), cards and stationary, and artwork pepper the shop from wall to wall. Basically, everything you need to create a warm, whimsical space can be found under this roof. 7 W. Main Street, Wickford. 294-4867, www.differentdrummerri.com

Fair Trade Winds Shopping with a conscience is easy at this cozy shop just steps from the harbor and Town Beach at East Ferry in Jamestown. Here you’ll find fair trade treasures ranging from home decor items to accessories and jewelry, personal products like solid non-toxic perfumes and essential oils, handmade notes and cards, and a lovely collection of sustainable clothing. It’s like shopping a little global bazaar right in your own backyard but you can leave the passport and TSA checks behind. This family-run retail store boasts seven locations across the country and as they say, “A visit to our store is a window to the world.” 47 Conanicus Avenue, Jamestown. 560-0564, www.fairtradewinds.net

Blueprint 5 ZZ Top is better known for their long, straggly beards than sage philosophy, but they had this one right from the beginning: Every girl crazy ‘bout a sharp dressed man. With tailored suits, sport jackets, ties, shoes and accessories from watches to messenger bags for men, it’s no wonder this West Bay boutique-for-bros with international flair already has a fan base in less than a year since opening its doors. With top quality Eton shirts, lux outerwear by Maria Louise Barbera, Holebrook sweaters, Noah Waxman shoes and sneakers, bags by Edward Armah and Kingsley watches, your wardrobe will be better traveled than you. 631 Main Street, East Greenwich. 885-2500

Watch Hill Taylor Swift might be credited for putting Watch Hill on the map ever since the singer-songwritercelebutante bought a $17,750,000 mega-mansion there boasting 11,000+ square feet, eight bedrooms and more than ten bathrooms, but the truth is that the coastal town has been welcoming America’s wealthiest families for generations. Perched on the most-southwestern point of the mainland, the coastal enclave has a century-old legacy of receiving the Gilded Age elite who eschewed Newport’s more glitzy reputation for a quieter, more relaxed summer with a less-frenzied social calendar. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t the “seen and be seen” crowd. A New York Times article once stated, “Life in Watch Hill revolved around golf and tennis at the Misquamicut Club, bathing and yachting at the Watch Hill Yacht Club and tea and cocktails at Ocean House and Watch Hill’s other grand hotels.” Today, after a reported $140 million renovation completed in 2010, the Ocean House has returned to the limelight, but of course Ms. Swift’s paparazzipursued posse including models, musicians and movie stars won’t need such accommodations as they have an already lux crash pad.

With three chic locations, Gossip Boutique keeps your wardrobe on trend

Gossip Boutique Stylistas who love clothing by Free People might already know this shop – with locations in Wickford, Wakefield and Newport – carries the largest selection of the trendy-meetsvintage-inspired line in New England outside of their signature stores. Stylish jumpers, romper, tanks, denim, tops and bottoms evoke a relaxed, bohemian vibe, while a fun find for an upscale occasion or day on the job can also be found. Plus, the shoes and accessories are positively dreamy – all of the trend even if you don’t have much to spend. Private shopping parties here can be arranged if you and you best galpals want to sit back, relax and be styled head to toe, and their Instagram (@gossip_boutique) is full of fashion inspiration. 16 Main Street, Wickford. 294-7333; 94 Main Street, Wakefield. 783-2300; 391 Thames Street, Newport. 849-3571, www.shopgossip.com September 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND

So Stylish | Life/Style

By Andrea McHugh

Sweeping views of the bay are perfectly framed throughout the Leonards’ home

Travel Globally, Live Locally When Dr. Robert Leonard

and his wife Kathy first laid eyes on a somewhat dated home with panoramic views of Narragansett Bay, glowing lighthouses and sailboats tacking into nearby harbors, they knew, despite its flaws, it would be the idyllic locale to raise their three children. Low ceilings, monotone wall color throughout and a kitchen placed peculiarly in the rear of the house (apparently the builder didn’t get the memo that the kitchen is the heart of a home) were just some of the challenges the couple knew they would have to address, but all in due time. As the founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates and Director of The Hair Health Institute, Dr. Leonard travels around the world to educate colleagues on advances in hair

restoration. That is, when he’s not offering solutions to patients for hair loss at one of seven locations throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. So his family home needed to be a place of peace and relaxation; a place to retreat, unwind and focus on the people he loves the most. The couple commissioned an architect to make better use of the space and capitalize on the enviable views. The process, however, was filled with permits, permissions and the like, not to mention commonplace construction hurdles and delays. To call it “challenging” might be an understatement. “We should have knocked the whole damn thing down,” says Dr. Leonard bluntly, albeit with a laugh. “The original house... was a somewhat small, center-hall colonial built in the 1970s. At the time, our architect

recommended that we ‘alter and add on’ to the original building which was a major undertaking, requiring over a year and a half to finish while we were still living in our prior home – meaning two mortgages to pay! It was thought that it would be less expensive than razing the original house. He was wrong.” While hindsight is 20/20, Dr. Leonard says having the right professionals on your team is the key to success. In their case, North Providence-based INEX Building led by Nicholas Manocchio was the right fit. The Leonards call Nicholas a fair, honest and true craftsman. Dr. Leonard’s second piece of advice to anyone considering renovations? “Be patient, because good work requires enough time to perfect – a characteristic I sometimes lack.” As with many great challenges

though, came great reward. Today, the 6,100-square-foot home boasts four spacious bedrooms and four bathrooms. As with the clothing worn in a photograph from more than two decades ago, sometimes what seemed perfect at the time doesn’t quite sync with tastes in the present. “Originally, when we built the house, our style was definitely traditional; however, as the years have passed, we are slowly converting the style to more contemporary,” explains Dr. Leonard. “For example, our dining room had been of an Eastern design with heavy cornice boards, an intricate Asian design wallpaper and heavy drapery. Today, we have removed that and have vertical painted, wide striped walls and minimal window coverings which are much cleaner and contemporary.” The couple also

recently renovated a bathroom to give it an updated, contemporary aesthetic. The interior design was managed by the Leonards from beginning to end. While the couple share a common passion for art, architecture and design, Dr. Leonard gives much of the credit to his better half. “My wife has a great eye,” he says. As the family is passionate about travel, artwork from around the world can be found throughout the home.

Particular favorites include pieces from Greece, an homage to the doctor’s heritage, but pieces from Italy and Africa are equally extraordinary. The Leonards say they could fill their home with beloved artwork but practice restraint to keep in step with the contemporary, modern feel of the home. The renovated patio invites friends and family to savor the salty breeze and the relocation of the kitchen to the waterside of the home makes even doing dishes a pleasure. But for Dr. Leonard, neither spaces take top honors. “My favorite space is our family room which is

open and airy and very comfortable,” he says. “I can watch TV, read or work on the computer without feeling closed in.” The jaw-dropping views of Narragansett Bay and Jamestown also help. Though their life is a busy one, the Leonards make time for causes and organizations they are passionate about including the University of New England, South County Hospital, the American Heart Association, St. Thomas Moore Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox of the Annunciation, among others. Though jet setters, the Leonards

always love returning to Narragansett. “The old adage, ‘There’s no place like home’ is oh so true! My passion for traveling the world is a strong one; however, coming back, first to America, is the best,” he says. “Home is not a building for me. It is where my family is, so being back with them in Narragansett grounds me and makes me realize how very fortunate I am.”

Pleasant. Friendly. Relax and Be Pampered

More Than Skin Deep Organical Botanical takes a holistic approach to beauty A nurse turned massage therapist, Tanya Palazzo is the owner of Organical Botanical, a skincare boutique and spa in East Greenwich. She and her partner Nick formulate all of the store’s organic, natural products. We sat down to talk about positive energy and great skin. What inspired Organical Botanical? Organical Botanical was very much driven by a personal desire to ignite positive change in the world, reconnect people with nature and help transform everyday experiences into sacred selfcare rituals that nurture your being in every way. I have been working in the healing arts since 2007. Originally, I went into nursing, but quickly realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I wanted to connect with and help people heal in a more relaxed, holistic setting. So I became a massage therapist instead. Which lead me to studying Ayurveda, herbalism, ancient alchemy and vibrational (energy) medicine.

Tell me more about your products. What will we find in them, and what won’t we find in them? We make everything ourselves in small batches. We take great care in extracting each ingredient in its purest, most active state. We formulate everything with the lunar cycles, and use an alchemical approach that harnesses the energy from the plants, minerals and essences in a way that (we believe) adds healing properties to the finished product. Everything at Organical Botanical is made with food-grade, organic ingredients such as unrefined cold pressed oils and butters, therapeutic-grade essential oils, and lots of love, always bottled in reusable glass packaging. We never use any synthetic preservatives, sulfates, petrochemicals, GMOs, artificial fragrances, dyes, fillers or anything that harms the integrity of our products. Does your green philosophy trickle into other aspects of your life? My passion for organics is woven into every thread of my life. I believe that our connection to the Earth is one of the most important connections we have. Without the Earth we would not exist. The Earth is alive, a sentient being and how we treat it is of vital importance. Whatever happens to the Earth

believer of getting to the root cause of the problem, internally and externally. So I would recommend if someone has a concern to stop by the store and come talk to me in person so I can ask some questions and take a look at what is going on. I am always there to help.

What are your favorite products that you make? I love and use them all! But if I had to choose, I would say my most favorites are the Coffee + Tea Toner, Botanical Youth Serum, Adzuki Face Scrub, Eye Cream, Lavender Blossom Body Oil, Herbal Salve, Hair and Scalp Treatment Oil and any of the chakra teas.

Tell me about the spa. What services do you offer? I offer a full spectrum of healing services (upstairs from the storefront) such as massage therapy, holistic facials, chakra balancing and herbal body wraps. All the products I use for the treatments are customized and blended based on individual needs. Obviously, no chemicals are used and each treatment is completely unique and personalized.

How can your products help address skin concerns that otherwise might need prescription help? Each person is different and so many things come into play when it comes to specific skin concerns. For example, if someone has acne the first thing I ask about is their diet, how much water they are drinking, what products (ingredients) they are using on their skin, and so on. Acne is usually a sign of toxicity in the body. However, it can also indicate a hormonal imbalance. Certain things like high stress and lack of sleep can exacerbate the condition. So it is really difficult to recommend a particular product without knowing the answers to these questions. Although a good facial and certain products will help diminish breakouts, I am a firm

There is a sweet new boutique in Wickford where truly unique items await you. Serendipity, an adorable shop opened by Melissa Beckwith, is a little gem. Beckwith, who started her jewelry line Missy & Me in 2012, started fulfilling a long time dream when she opened her own store in April. With a keen eye, she has brought in very different handmade items from over 25 local artists as well as Etsy artists from around the country. Items range from the sweet – tooth fairy pillows – to offbeat – bizarrely beautiful photos of poisonous plants, taken by the state’s only toxicologist. In between there are pieces to suit any taste or décor as well as perfect gifts for every occasion. In addition to her own beautiful earrings and necklaces, there are chunky

silver cuffs with stones, intriguing rope pendants and gorgeous bracelets made from bent silver spoons. Serendipity also carries bling for the puppies in your life. There is a line of handmade collars and leashes with fantastic colors and patterns such as anchors and pirates. Interesting fabric items abound including silk screened tote bags, handsewn bags for jewelry storage, wallets and checkbook covers as well as fun headbands. A wide selection of unusual reversible fabric bowls in several sizes offers great desktop or countertop storage. There are rough-hewn birdhouses and wine racks, fairy doors and mosaic garden rocks for your house or yard and funky accent lighting set inside liquor bottles.

Serendipity also carries a fascinating collection called Moonglow. These silver charms represent different phases of the moon. If you have an important date to memorialize, Melissa can tell you which phase the moon was in and you will have an awesome way to represent it. And they glow in the dark! So many treasures to see in every corner of Serendipity. Make it your good fortune to stop by soon. 1. Gem cuffs and bracelets $25-$50 2. Decorated rocks $10 3. A bit of Botox does a face good

40 Charles Street, Wakefield (401) 783-3100 Committed To Excellence & Integrity In All We Do

I always get a bit restless

this time of year. The end of summer, coupled with another back to school season for my kids, reminds me how fast time is going by. The lines around my eyes don’t help either. Crows feet not only make me look older, they make me feel older. While I can’t turn back the hands of time, I can take a few years off my face with a bit of Botox. Getting this line item checked off my back to school list just got a whole lot easier (and more affordable) now that my dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Mansolillo, offers it. If you’ve already have Botox, pass go. If you’ve had it and overdid it to the point where you had no expression, go back to jail where you belong. If you’ve never had it and are curious, listen up: Botox is your friend. If done in moderation by a trained professional, it will erase years off your face and make you look like you just came back from a month’s vacation. Regardless of where you stand politically, this is where you absolutely want to be conservative. Seeing someone you trust is key so that you walk away looking like the best version of yourself. I’ve been seeing Dr. Jeff for years for all my dental needs at Mansolillo Dental, his family practice in Johnston. Last June, he opened Rhode Island Cosmetic Dentistry (RICD) with orthodontist and business partner Jason Izzi. With a shared vision and philosophy, the two joined forces to

create an ultra modern and relaxed approach to dentistry and aesthetics. “If anyone can really be in touch with facial aesthetics, it’s a dentist,” Jeff tells me at RICD’s office in East Greenwich. The well-rounded practice offers the comprehensive dental and orthodontic services offered at Jeff and Jason’s respective practices all under one convenient roof. Cosmetic treatments range from porcelain veneers and teeth whitening to facial and lip fillers. “We found that patients already trusted us with needles,” Jeff says with a laugh. “Both Jason and I were seeing a huge demand for these services by our patients in our practices.” When I see Jeff for my treatment, he greets me with a huge smile. We talk about my problem area and he agrees that Botox can make an impact. He uses a white makeup pencil to precisely mark where the needle will go, and within minutes the whole procedure is done. The small red bumps were completely gone in ten minutes, and in two days I could already see a big difference. With a new sense of confidence, I can face September after all.

So Delicious Tasty Twists on Thai

Photography by Hilary Block

Although shopping centers may not conjure up images of delectable cuisine, perhaps they should. This month we reviewed Tong-D, the second location of the Barrington favorite, situated in you guessed it, a shopping center. If you’ve ever been to South County Commons, you know what treasures it holds. Now, you can add Tong-D to that list. Turn the page to read more.

So Delicious | Review

By Stacey Place

East Meets West Tong-D brings bold flavors to South County Commons of as foodie destinations. Yet, across the United States people are finding great food in such places. In fact, the restaurant in Las Vegas widely regarded as the best Thai restaurant in the United States, Lotus of Siam, is found not in a casino but rather in a strip mall. In southern Rhode Island, the South County Commons has all the prerequisites of being a great plaza – a movie theater, a Cardi’s Furniture, a tanning salon, an assisted living facility and a variety of restaurants. Already having the excellent Trattoria Romana, South County Commons was on the map as a place to dine. When I heard Tong-D, a Thai restaurant, had opened there this past winter, I immediately thought of Lotus of Siam and hoped it lived up to the high standard. When Tong-D opened in South Kingstown in February this year, it relied on the reputation of its wildly successful original location in Barrington. The new restaurant is located in a bright, light filled space almost directly across from the famous Japanese restaurant Shogun. The interior of the restaurant is high class. Hanging from the ceiling are large, elegant crystal chandeliers, and the shiny, wooden floors are accented with

decorative throw rugs. Every table has a fresh rose on it and gorgeous topiaries envelop the dining room. Hoping to enlighten my parents to new South County dining possibilities, I brought them along for dinner at Tong-D. We started with a celebratory cocktail since my mother had recently retired. I was feeling the island vibe and felt compelled to try a Mai Tai ($10). It was made with Bacardi Superior Rum, Bacardi Gold Rum, DiSaranno Amaretto, triple sec, sour mix and house made punch. It was sweet and had a real kick to it! My father tried the Tom-Yum Martini ($10) – Stoli Vodka, Bacardi Superior Rum, chili, lime and lemongrass syrup. Although the drink was good, what set it apart was the amazing glassware it came in. The conical martini glass sat in a small, glass bowl of ice. The martini was kept cold by the ice, and it was a stunning presentation. My mother is on a Mojito kick and thought Tong-D’s version ($9.50) was particularly good since it had a nice tart taste from the lime and not too much simple syrup. The menu at Tong-D is varied and interesting. There are many familiar favorites as well as some innovative twists on Thai cuisine. There was so much to pick from, I had a hard time deciding

Lemongrass Tom-Yum Soup

what to order, so we started with a trio of appetizers. With a wide variety under $9, you could make a meal from the appetizers and be perfectly happy. First out of the kitchen, we sampled Garlic String Beans ($5.95). The beans were sautéed to a perfect crispness and served in a sauce of garlic and soy. They weren’t spicy like I have seen in other Thai restaurants,

but they were very flavorful. Next up, we shared an order of Chicken Satay ($6.95). I wasn’t wildly enthusiastic about this dish, but my satay connoisseur mother proclaimed it to be fantastic. The chicken was marinated in coconut milk, grilled on a wooden skewer and then served with a peanut butter cream sauce and a lighter, vinegar based peanut sauce. We also tried the Scallion Pancake ($5.95), and it was fluffier than most versions I have tried. The pancake was good on its own, but it was accompanied by some dipping sauces, and the sauces elevated this dish even higher. Pad Thai is the one Thai dish everyone in the United States seems to recognize. Seeing Crispy Pad Thai ($12.95) on the menu, I was excited to try this new take on one of my favorites. The enormous platter of fried noodles presented to me was overwhelming at first. As I started to eat, however, I was rewarded with not only the extra-crunchy noodles, but also with tender, white meat chicken and grilled shrimp. The sauce was heavy on soy/fish sauce flavor, yet it was still good. My mother wanted something with wide noodles, so she tried the Chicken Pad C-U ($10.95), known as Pad See Ew in most other Thai

restaurants. See Ew refers to the sweet dark soy sauce it’s made with. The wide rice noodles tasted homemade and absorbed the sauce. This dish also featured tender, white meat chicken. My father, not known for being daring in his food choices, ordered Lobster Ravioli ($17.50) because he thought it sounded like a safe dish to try. I don’t know if he was expecting such a unique take on lobster ravioli, but that’s what he got. Although the ravioli were standard, they were accompanied by a delicate Karee curry (yellow, coconut flavored) sauce made in-house, wilted baby spinach, chunks of potato and some crispy noodles thrown in to give the dish texture. Surprisingly, my father enjoyed it. Dining at Tong-D is an enjoyable experience all around. The servers were

friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was elegant and relaxing, the food was well prepared, and the prices are exceptionally reasonable. If you are looking for a bargain, on Tuesday-Sunday, the restaurant offers a prix fixe lunch. It includes a choice of appetizer, house salad with miso dressing and an entrée ($10.95-$11.95 depending on your selection). It’s a great way to sample a variety of dishes at a reasonable price. Not to mention, since you’re at a shopping center, you can run some errands or catch a movie when you’re done.

J22 Tap and Table in Jamestown

In a state known worldwide for sailing – the Volvo Ocean Race being the latest example – it’s no surprise that bits and pieces of that culture have made its way into our everyday lives. From bros with boat shoes to sail handbag couture, it was only a matter of time until it literally came to the table. A J22 is a 22-foot sailboat that is very popular in both racing and leisure. Now, it’s a new restaurant in Jamestown. J22 Tap and Table is the newest addition to Narragansett Avenue. It’s a farm-to-table restaurant with peakof-the-season dishes like Black Sea Bass with Fresh Tomato Salsa and Sea Scallops with Olive Tapenade. Choosy locals with a hankering for fresh-from-the-bay seafood are sure to be satisfied. “Our homemade chowder, Jonah Crab crabcake and sauteed calamari are a couple of our most popular appetizers,” says owner Jackie Mignone. “Our fish entrees come strait from Point Judith to the plate. We receive small amounts of fish daily, so our fish is always fresh and never frozen.” Beer lovers fear not: there are both

local favorites and regional staples available in all their frothy glory. Newport Storm, Foolproof, Whalers Brewing, Narragansett and Grey Sail are just some of the choices representing the state. Another fine example of local love are Matunuck oysters – come in during appy hour for Buck-a-Shuck. Housemade pastas, brioche buns, condiments, chowder made to order and more are a few things to look forward to at J22. Chef Christophe Jalbert works with about 30 farmers and describes the cuisine as “simply sophisticated and ranges from New American to Italian and French.” Christophe has been involved in farm to table restaurants since starting his career in 1996 at Fore Street restaurant in Portland, Maine. As fall starts to rear her warm and cheery head, J22 will host regular wine and beer dinners. As if blending sail culture with food wasn’t enough, now we will contend with delicious dinner pairings at the turn of the season. Cheers to that. 22 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-3709

There’s a new boutique hotel in town, and it comes with a side of surf-inspired bistro fare. The Break Hotel’s beach bistro is Chair 5 – aptly named for Chair 5 at Narragansett Town Beach. Chef Basil Yu has created a menu of surf and turf, with more emphasis on the surf, naturally. Think of it as bistro cuisine with a fine dining touch. Chef Basil hails from the Muse restaurant at the Vanderbilt Grace in Newport, after all. Look forward to hot lobster rolls, Narragansett Bay mussels and hanger steaks. Top it all off with a s’mores ice cream sandwich. The Break Hotel, 1208 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 363-9800, www.dineChair5.com

Transcending Tradition One of the great things about farm-totable dining is that it transcends culinary traditions. Local produce, seafood and goods can be used in any type of cuisine, and Tate’s Italian Kitchen in Wickford does just that. It takes traditional Italian favorites like Eggplant Parmesan and Lasagna Bolognese and pairs it with inspired appetizers such as fresh mozzarella and farm tomatoes, roasted beets and a peach, prosciutto and Gorgonzola trio. Come for the tradition, stay for the creative dishes. 64 Brown Street, Wickford. 294-0000, www.TatesItalianKitchen.com

Just Shucky Open Oyster’s Dana Spring on loving oysters and the joys of a raw bar Growing up on Nantucket, Dana Spring was no stranger to feasting on the spoils of the sea. Seafood, shellfish – there was no shortage of scintillating, salty delicacies on the quiet island 30 miles off the mainland. But it wasn’t until she was a young adult that Dana had her first oyster. From then on, she knew there was just something special about the little, sweet, meaty mollusk. Together with her husband Mark, in between owning and operating Newport’s Marshall Slocum Inn, Dana introduced southern New England to Open Oyster this past April, an on-demand raw bar catering experience for private events with oysters and shellfish shucked to order. Why oysters? Why now? I had seen someone do the same thing when I was a kid and I liked the raw bar catering concept. It looked like a really fun thing to do when I grew up. I’ve loved all seafood from the time I was little. I love all food too – there’s no food I don’t like. But I had my first oyster as an adult and I loved it. Even more so, I like how much other people like them. Later, when I realized how

important oysters are to our waters and the ecosystem, I knew it was the way I wanted to give back environmentally. What percentage of those who saunter on up to the Open Oyster raw bar are oyster aficionados and what percentage are curious newbies? I think it’s 50/50. Half of our guests have been eating oysters all their lives and know their favorites and the other half are excited to enjoy it for the first time in a party setting. It’s really fun to enjoy a raw bar. People that surround the boat have a great time and are always happy to be eating and experiencing it. How many varieties of oysters do you serve? We usually have two to three varieties at each party; it’s a good taste testing. But it all depends on what the host wants and if they have a favorite. We’ll always have at least one local oyster variety on the bar, one type that is wild and another that is farm-raised. The old adage about fresh oysters is that they taste the best only during months that end in the letter “r.” What say you?

Well, the colder the water, the sweeter the oyster. I think December delivers the best oysters because they are getting ready to go into hibernation and many of their nutrients have turned into sugars, so they’re real sweet. Like children, I’m sure it’s hard to pick a favorite (or is it?), but what is your go-to oyster? I really love Umamis from Quonset, the Matunucks from Perry [Raso] at Matunuck Oyster Bar and Island Creek Oysters from Duxbury, MA. You’re half a year in. Where would you like to take Open Oyster from here? I’d like to see the business grow. I would like to be able to do more than one party a night and venture out to clients out of state. It’s going ten times better than I even imagined and eventually I’d like to send teams out, but right now I go to each event – I want them to be perfect.

The Twisted Vine The Twisted Vine is a beautiful, family run bar and restaurant in historic downtown Westerly. It serves a globally inspired menu meant to complement the extensive wine list, including 33 selections by the glass. The food reflects the Twisted Vine’s effort to provide locally-sourced products. They craft traditional foods with a modern twist. The menu ranges from nibbles & noshes like assorted olives and almond baked brie, to small plates like empanadas and seared tuna, all the way to large entrees like braised short

ribs and Cuban pork tenderloin. And don’t miss the gourmet grilled cheeses. Of course, everything at the Twisted Vine is best enjoyed with a proper drink. They offer a huge list of wines from all over the world, as well as craft beers, small batch spirits and Tinis and Tales, their signature cocktail lists with literary inspirations. The Twisted Vine also offers entertainment every Saturday. They serve their full menu every night until 10pm, and a light fare menu from 10pm-close.

Can’t-Miss Dish: The Doyle: from the Gourmet Grilled Cheese menu, this one has roasted butternut squash, arugula, tomatoes, almonds, curry aioli and apricot Stilton on multi-grain bread.

South County’s

Ten Rod Ramblers call their shows a “folk rocking good time,” where they perform covers from folk rock artists like Bob Dylan, the Eagles, Van Marrison, Willie Nelson and “everyone you like from that era.” The North Kingstown natives have become a popular act in South County and are performing every week through Halloween, at least. Ten Rod Ramblers formed in 2009 when singer-guitarist Phil Auger met bassist Joe Petrarca and lead guitarist Jeff Shea. United by their love of ‘60s and ‘70s folk rock, their lineup was completed when Phil attended the WUMB Summer Acoustic Music Week in New Hampshire. There, he met Sally Sisto, who plays banjo, mandolin and performs the band’s harmony vocals. In addition to musical influences, the newly formed quartet found they had similar personalities and senses of humor – everything clicked for them. The group spent a year of their collective free time rehearsing, while also performing for coffee and tips at Java Madness Coffee House in Wakefield. Playing for free coffee is a perk second only to playing for free beer, but as the band tightened their sound, they stretched out and became regulars at South County locales such as the Breachway Grille, Oak Hill Tavern and the Carriage Inn & Saloon. As their popularity grew, an endorsement from a well-respected local favorite certainly didn’t hurt. “Gil Pope is one of us at this point,” Phil says. “He sits in whenever one of us can’t make it (which can be often). Gil is a local legend for his music and plays out quite a bit in South County bars and restaurants and is versatile on guitar, bass, mandolin and vocals.” Folk, rock and folk rock have a strong following in South County, not to mention all of Li’l Rhody. Ten Rod Ramblers released cover albums in 2009 and 2010 to support their shows, and continued to gather a steadily growing fan base along the way. The love that locals, both performers and fans, have for the music continues to bring the community together. Not only does it offer them an opportunity to share

that common love, but also gives them a chance to see each other in a new light. “We love North Kingstown and have played up and down Post Road and regularly for the Wickford Summer Concert series,” Phil says. “Many in town know me as the Superintendent. It’s nice to see their reaction when they see this different side of me.” It’s their passion for music that keeps bands like Ten Rod Ramblers going. Their first year of rehearsing happened while each member led their daily lives and held down other careers. “My day job is working as Superintendent of the North Kingstown School Department,” Phil says. “Joe works for LaSalle Academy as a bus driver, Sally is selfemployed processing medical records and Jeff works as a computer manager for an electronics company. We all have a passion for the music and love gigging on weekends.” In an era where established stars like Gene Simmons say that rock is dead, it’s daunting for a band to try to make a go of it. The days of copycatting the latest trends and getting signed to multi-album deals for millions of dollars are, if not gone, scarce. Nowadays local artists perform mostly for their love of it, and newer bands have to evaluate their goals. “Do it because you love playing and enjoy the company,” Phil says. “If you get

into weekend bar gigs for the money, you’ll be disappointed fast.” The advantage of this is that the bands who remain, like Ten Rod Ramblers, will be the passionate ones who have honed, and continue to honor, their craft. Money is important, money is great, but artists still perform for the sake of displaying their art. Music brings people together as few other things can, and the evidence is seen at shows such as the ones Ten Rod Ramblers, as well as countless other bands, play. “We’ve played some great beach parties and other private functions, but I would say we just enjoy playing most when the audience gets into it and sings along,” Phil says. “We invite all to come on and see a show. We have a core group of Rambler fans who keep coming back for more and they always comment about how much they love this music they grew up with. It really is a folk rockin’ great time.”

He(art)ful Hands Nancy Lyon’s passion for pottery extends beyond the classroom Peace Dale-based artist and teacher Nancy Lyon uses her lifelong love of pottery to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of at-risk youths in the state. Her goal? To help others foster connection and a positive sense of self through artistic expression. Nancy has lived in Rhode Island for 41 years, occasionally switching towns but mostly residing in Jamestown or South Kingstown. “I grew up in New Jersey and was looking to be someplace more beautiful, and this was it,” she says, laughing. Her love for pottery started early, with her first pottery class at age 16 in New Jersey. “I fell in love with making pots, so when I moved to Rhode Island I joined the pottery studio at the South County Art Association (SCAA),” a cooperative studio where participants contribute each year to have access to wheels, kilns and other materials. “It’s a great place that has offered community pottery for many, many years. I worked there as much as I could, took classes and eventually became a teacher there. I am a potter by trade and pursued my Bachelor of Fine Arts at Rhode Island College, then later decided to earn my teaching certificate.” In addition to teaching classes at SCAA, Nancy is the art teacher at Ocean Tides School, a Christian Brothers school whose mission is to educate and care for boys who are in trouble with the law or have difficulty

learning in a standard school environment. The program has two campuses; one in Narragansett where about 50 children live at the school and are taken care of, and another campus in Providence. Many of the boys at the Narragansett campus have come from the Training School in Cranston. Ocean Tides also offers a day program for those who require a small school environment, with at most 12 children per class. The Providence campus offers a day-only program that encompasses youths from various districts. Nancy teaches all different mediums at Ocean Tides, not just pottery. Her students can try stained glass, drawing, painting, sculpture, mask making, plasterwork and more. “Kids come into my class saying, ‘I don’t like art because I can’t draw.’ They feel inadequate, and my goal as a teacher is to help them to find the medium they can connect with so they can express themselves. Most of the students are good at art. They see things that other people don’t see, they think like artists and don’t even realize it because they’ve been taught that art is something very specific and contained, when really it’s much broader than that.” Making art has been long recognized as a way to build confidence and instill a host of other positive effects, which Nancy has observed firsthand

through her teaching work. “When people find something that makes sense to them or taps into a deeper part of themselves, they feel more connected. That’s what it’s all about – being connected to something real and being able to express yourself in a way that has meaning. When you interact with others and create something you feel good about, it boosts your spirits.” Ocean Tides students were able to give back to their local communities through an event Nancy organized in tandem with the RI Community Food Bank called Empty Bowls. The kids created pottery bowls and donated them to the cause, with sales from their artwork benefitting the RI Community Food Bank and hungry families. “The students were enthralled with that process,” says Nancy. “They were so happy to know that what they were making would help feed a family.” She will also be teaching some upcoming after-school classes at the Child & Family Group Home. “I just think it’s great for people to get personally exposed to the arts, and it makes me happy that I can be a facilitator of that joy,” she says.

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

Livin La Vida Cocoa

Nobody Knows the Truffles I’ve Seen

Packed with a range of cocoa contents, the Coast Guard House’s flourless cake offers a trifecta of textures for the chocolate connoisseur. A dark, brownie-like cake serves as a base under a layer of mousse that is light in both texture and flavor. Both are topped with a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate plaquette that helps port-wine soaked cherries and a house-made pistachio nougat extend the sweet experience. 40 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 789-0700, www.thecoastguardhouse.com

Jamestown’s Slice of Heaven is true to its name with its straight up fudgy, wheatfree offerings. Their chocolate cake, topped with a delicate, but bold, layer of ganache and light dusting of powdered sugar, reminds us of the lush inside of a truffle. Obviously crafted with quality dark chocolate, we love the subtle crunch of sugar crystals that tops this one’s brownie-batter consistency. 32 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-9866, www.sliceofheavenri.com

A Frosted Fête

Balanced Bites

After trying Sweet Cakes Bakery’s mocha buttercream frosted cake, we understand why it’s “Auntie’s favorite.” This crowd-pleaser impressed us with its size and multi-tiered structure. The thick, but not overly sweet, cake houses an almost weightless mousse for a dark, smooth dessert. Finished with a dusting of Belgian cocoa, we agree this decadent dish hits all the right notes. 1227 Kingstown Road, Peace Dale. 789-5420, www. sweetcakesbakeryri.com

Like a traditional black forest cake, Vesta Bakery’s version uses the sweetness of brandied cherries and fresh whipped cream to cut each densely delicious layer. Unlike most gluten-free goods, this one has a fluffy texture that’s characteristic of a traditional cake and an airier base that dark and milk chocolate lovers can agree on. Dressed in a layer of chocolate ganache, this sponge cake offers the perfect texture – and grants you enough room – for a solid dollop of ice cream. 47 Railroad Avenue, Westerly. 348-7055, www.vestabakery.com

Although South County’s farms are brimming with the best fall fruits, we decided to stray from traditional tarts and pies for a dessert that’s always in season: chocolate. But strip a classic dish of its typical flour and what happens? Unexpectedly wonderful things. They say the best things in life are free, but we think they may have meant flourless.
