LIFT NECK AND FACIAL MUSCLES NO PAIN • NO DOWN TIME • NO SURGERY

THE SMOOTH SKIN SYSTEM

Day to day, our face is the first thing people notice. As we age it’s often the first area to show signs of aging. WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO TO PREMATURE FACIAL AGING AND WHAT MAKES US LOOK OLD? THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THESE THINGS CAN BE TREATED, AND IN MANY CASES LARGELY REVERSED.

By combining scientifically based technologies during treatment, we are able to improve a wider range of age related issues.

WHAT IS THE SMOOTH SKIN SYSTEM

The smooth skin system integrates 5 non- invasive technologies designed to restore the skin's metabolic functions, taking years off the appearance of the skin, without having to resort to painful surgical procedures.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

Waves of energy produced by the system gently vibrate and heat the tissue, reorganizing the skin’s scaffolding and stimulating new collagen production.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? 30 minutes

HOW WILL YOU FEEL DURING THE TREATMENT?

Realize and comfortable. Smooth skin is non-invasive. No recovery time required. You can receive your treatment and go back to work and normal activities immediately.

HOW QUICKLY SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

You should notice improvements after the first treatment. It takes 4-6 weeks for the skin's natural collagen renewal process to fully take effect.

Business and life partners Cindie DeMello and Tanya DiMarco (center) combined forces to make meals with fitness in mind

At-Your-Door Delicious Good4U celebrates its first year as a health food delivery service Suppose you have a personal chef. But this chef is also a nutritionist. She not only knows your tastes, but also your allergies, your exercise regimen, and your target weight. Best of all, your chef delivers each meal to your door, and all you have to do is heat it up.

That’s the idea behind Good4U, a culinary start-up headquartered in Warren. Now a year old, Good4U is the brainchild of two health-conscious women: Cindie DeMello, a personal trainer of 25 years, and Tanya DiMarco, a seasoned cook. (continued on next page)

ON THE BAY

Good4u’s food is made at Hope & Main in Warren, mostly from local ingredients

(continued from previous page) “Fitness and nutrition go hand in hand,” says DeMello. “You can’t be a personal trainer and know absolutely nothing about nutrition. The number one thing preventing people from achieving their goals is the food. Cooking, eating – that’s where people tend to slide a little.” DeMello and DiMarco met in Rhode Island about a decade ago, and they worked intermittently together before becoming a romantic couple. As part of her fitness program, DeMello offers rigorous boot camps for clients with ambitious fitness goals. During one of her two-week boot camps, DeMello hired a chef. “Those people saw such amazing results,” DeMello recalls. And exercise was only half the story: “The results are amazing because of the nutritional component.” This epiphany prompted DeMello to study culinary arts at Johnson and Wales University. When she finished the program in 2015, she and DiMarco felt ready to combine their skills – and Good4U was born.

12

The Bay • February 2018

Meal delivery services have become popular across the country, from couriers like Uber Eats to meal kits like HelloFresh. But Good4U claims its own niche: They only deliver in Rhode Island, mostly in the East Bay, and feed between 40 and 50 regular customers. Meals are packed into cooler bags, and two dedicated drivers drop them off in their own cars. The menu rotates regularly, and customers can customize ingredients according to their needs. “We like to listen to our clients,” says DiMarco. “They say, ‘I wish you had this,’ and we try to work that into our menu. We try to keep things interesting.” The actual cooking takes place at Hope & Main in Warren. They procure most of their ingredients from local growers, and they rent a commercial kitchen for whipping up their dishes. As business partners, DeMello plays the driven entrepreneur and DiMarco serves as general manager. As life partners, spending so much time together can be challenging, but they’ve found ways to integrate

work and personal time. DeMello says that she never cooks at home, but she frequently makes extra servings at Hope & Main. Now that they’ve survived their first year, DeMello is excited about Good4U’s next phase. “We want more clients ordering our food – that’s the main goal,” she says. DeMello hopes to collaborate with physicians, weight-loss specialists, and gyms, buy a company van, and deliver to every corner of the state. “I would like to work even more closely with our customers,” she muses. “There are a whole slew of clients we’ve never actually met. I wish I could sit down with every single one of them and talk about their likes and dislikes, about their nutritional goals. Going into it, I thought, ‘I’ve been a business owner for so many years, I can do this.’ But the food industry is very different. There are a lot of walls you have to break through. I’m learning a lot.” Good4URI.com –Robert Isenberg

K-8 Special Education School Learn more at: www.thewolfschool.org There are so many reasons to be excited about American Rhapsody: The Gershwin Songbook, playing this month in the FirstWorks performing arts festival. The show goes on at The Vets in Providence and features the Gershwin Big Band, a touring, 17-piece ensemble of world-class musicians. The band leader is the acclaimed Broadway crooner Michael Andrew. The revue has even received the blessing of Todd Gershwin, great-nephew of George Gershwin. But for six young musicians from the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School in East Providence, American Rhapsody is more than a high-caliber concert: it’s their chance to show off their musical skills for a roomful of connoisseurs. The six teenagers will play for about 45 minutes in the lobby before the official concert, performing a mix of Gershwin tunes and other jazz standards, while the audience mingles. This pre-show is a major showcase for the music school – which is nationally renowned for its youth education – as well as for FirstWorks, which has been actively involved in Rhode Island schools for nearly a decade and runs a program called Jumpstart, which brings music instruction to public secondary schools.

At the music school, the ensemble has been busily rehearsing since November. “I’m excited for them,” says Ron Sanfilippo, the ensemble’s music coach and a longtime nightclub performer. “A lot of students are afraid to play, because they’re afraid to sound bad. But they learn how to listen, how to support each other.” Jazz thrives on personality, and for artists in their formative years, improvising with jazz instruments builds character like no other musical genre. Just ask Ian Banno, a 16-year-old bass player from Johnston. He’s attended the music school for six years and has played with the Symphony Orchestra and in a master class taught by Jon Batiste, bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Banno’s mother, Erin Erban, is an accomplished conductor. Gradually, Banno has shifted his focus from classical music to jazz. “As I got older, I started to change my opinion of what music should be,” says Banno. “It should be more expressive. It should be about how you feel.” American Rhapsody: The Gershwin Songbook performs February 22, 7:30pm, at The Vets. FirstWorks.org, 421-2787. –Robert Isenberg

Keeping the East Bay Green Arthur Parker works to preserve open space and natural beauty

Arthur H. Parker is the first to admit his golf game is not very good. Fortunately for many organizations, he has little interest in improving it. Since retiring in 2000 from the investmen t firm Standish Ayer & Wood, Arthur has focused his energies on preserving open land and managing three charitable trusts. The Brown University graduate received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and attended New York University’s business school. Arthur credits his lifelong interest in land preservation to the writings of James Fenimore Cooper, who explored themes of land versus civilization and has been called a “pioneer of the environmental movement.” Parker serves on the Chairman’s Counsel for Blithewold Mansion and the Board of Directors for the Westport Land Conservation Trust and the Westport River Watershed Alliance. He is the manager and trustee of the Schrafft

Charitable Trust and the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Charitable Foundation, both of which distribute grants and scholarships to children in need, and the Howard Foundation, which awards fellowships to early mid-career academics. A Barrington resident for 45 years, Arthur and his wife Connie are parents to three children. He can be contacted at ArtyParker@aol.com. Before I retired, I got involved with Save Blithewold. Preserve Rhode Island had run the property’s endowment of $1.2 million down to $2,000, and was going to sell it to the developer of Carnegie Abbey. Mary Glenn organized a group of us to raise $650,000 in about three weeks. We convinced Preserve Rhode Island not to sell and we would take it over. I became the chairman and continue to be involved. A wonderful English teacher introduced

me to James Fenimore Cooper who wrote The Last of the Mohicans. He was very worried about the United States losing this wonderful land to commercial use and forcing out Native Americans. It always stayed with me. I am fixated on saving land. America is so beautiful but once a developer gets the land, it’s gone. Barrington is supposedly one of the nicest towns, but yet has very little open space and no real public access to water. I think it is very undemocratic. I’m involved with the Westport Land Conservation Trust, which has preserved close to 5,000 acres. We just saved 83 acres for sale by the Diocese of Fall River. Today the average male lives to 78. Retirement is 65. What are you going to do with all that time? I wasn’t going to sit around. My golf is bad. If life has been good to you, you have to give back. —Nina Murphy

A guide to off-season fun in the City by the Sea

• by Jackie Ignall •

Newport is most likely your go-to spot in the summer months for its stunning coastline, tasty eateries, and lively entertainment, but it should be a must-visit in the off-season as well. Without the usual droves of tourists, you can easily find a parking spot as well

Lace up and hit the ice at the Newport Skating Center

as score that dinner reservation you always wanted.

Warm Up to Fireside Dining There’s nothing better than having a hot toddy or meal hearthside on a winter day. Overlooking the harbor, every table at 22 Bowens (22Bowens.com) comes with spectacular views. Nab one of the four tables that flank the upstairs fireplace for an extra toasty experience. Castle Hill Inn (CastleHillInn.com) serves up house-made pasta and Nantucket Bay scallops inside the nineteenth-century Victorian mansion overlooking two

wood-burning fireplaces, in addition to the ones featured in the lobby and mansion bar. The White Horse Tavern, America’s oldest tavern, (WhiteHorseNewport.com), plays up the cozy atmosphere within the uber-quaint colonial building that it calls home, with multiple fireplaces to warm you while feasting on comfort food like beef Wellington and lobster mac n’ cheese. The old-world charm of the Clarke Cooke House features a gas-burning fireplace

in its wharf-level Candy Store (ClarkeCooke. com/Candy-Store), while the bistro bar room, decked out with wood posts and beams, has a wood-burning one alongside a cozy couch you’ll want to snag if available. The Mooring Seafood Kitchen + Bar (MooringRestaurant. com) offers seafood lovers waterfront views along with their shellfish towers, and a few tables by a wood-burning fireplace that stays lit all season long.

Party at Winter Fest When you can’t take another day sitting inside, head to Newport’s 30th annual Winter Festival (NewportWinterFestival.com). The fun-filled, tenday festival, from February 16 to 26, caters to all ages and features food, music, and 150 events that are held at multiple locations in and near town. Some of this year’s events include a princess party, a concert by Jimmy Buffett tribute band Latitudes, comedy shows, a chili cook-off, a hot drink contest, and two polo matches held on Easton’s Beach.

Take a Soak in Mineral-Infused Baths Work out those cold-weather kinks and spend a few hours at Bodhi Spa (TheBodhiSpa.com), New England’s only hydrotherapy day spa, which specializes in a rejuvenating water journey treatment to boost the circulatory system and get rid of toxins. The hot-cool treatment alternates hot mineral baths, cold plunge pools, wet and dry saunas, and a steam room, all for $55, which also gets you access for the entire day.

Listen to Live Music Newport has its share of intimate live music venues and often brings in some big-name acts. On Fridays and Saturdays, Newport Blues Café (NewportBlues. com) hosts live bands from all different genres starting at 10pm. Check out a slightly more intimate live music scene while you sip the extensive craft beer and wine selection at Norey’s (Noreys.com), which hosts performances on Wednesday nights and live jazz on Thursdays throughout the season. Play a game of pool at popular local hangout Jimmy’s Saloon (Facebook: Jimmy’s Saloon), which also features live local bands on certain nights.

Open year-round for tastings and tours, Newport Vineyards (NewportVineyards.com) offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the wine-making process. You can sip on wines by the glass or at one of their tastings, and, if you’re hungry, feast on duck confit pizzas, local oysters, and roasted chicken at their in-house restaurant, Brix. During the winter months, you can find wine and cheese classes, cooking demonstrations, and live music on the weekends. Newport Storm Brewery (NewportStorm.com), Rhode Island’s first microbrewery, offers self-guided tours, beer flights, and tastings of Thomas Tew Rum, named after the infamous Newport pirate.

Hoop There It Is at cardioglow in Barrington

1

Barre + Pilates

Smart, sexy, with all the right moves. I’m not talking about JLo, but rather the genius combination of Barre and Pilates that gives us the fun and unique workout Barrelates. Bridge to Fitness’ signature class integrates the precision of Pilates, the full-body movement of dance, and the benefits of functional movement all into one challenging program designed to tone, tighten, and keep you on your toes. Middletown, BridgeToFitness.com

2

Build That Booty

If you’ve spent more than 0.7 seconds on Instagram, you know that booties are making a comeback. Instead of trying to make them disappear, we are now giving them the spotlight. Work on that backside at Aull Pilates and Movement Studio in Booty Barre – an energetic, fun workout that fuses dance, Pilates, and yoga to tone and sculpt your entire body with a combo of strength and flexibility training and cardio. Middletown, AullPilates.com

3

Absolute Power

4

It’s All in the Hips

Being a grown-up is overrated. We have things like bills, endless trips to the market, and entirely too many responsibilities. What we don’t have enough of are hula hoops. Until now. Check out cardioglow’s Hoop There It Is class – a joyful, 55-minute multilevel high and low intensity interval class with segments of toning, dance cardio, and – you guessed it – hula hooping. Work those abs with laughter, some shimmying, and an eternal homage to your childhood. Barrington, cardioglow.com

Feel the Rhythm, Feel the Burn

You may already dance to the beat of your own drum, but take it one step further and literally dance to the beat of your own (air)drum in La Vida! Dance & Fitness’s Pound class. Using lightly weighted drumsticks, jam out in this full-body cardio, conditioning, and strength-training session by letting loose, becoming one with the rhythm and volume, and pounding away with 15,000 reps performed over 30 extended interval peaks in more than 70 techniques. Bristol, ZumbaWithDeana.Webs.com

Photography by Wolf Matthewson

Power Hour takes on a whole new meaning when shots of beer aren’t involved. Powerr Fitness’s 60-minute session will leave you with a clear head and a calorie burn instead of the complete opposite. Powerr Hour incorporates multiple functional movements with light to moderate weight training for a full-body workout that gets your heart pumping and mind singing, minus the foamy head. Warren, PowerrFitness.com

6

Gotta Have That Funk

Bruno Mars may lead the funk uptown, but 426 Fitness keeps it local with their Fit N’ Funky class. A high-energy, low-impact workout, which combines bars and light weights with brisk dance movements, places an emphasis on muscle sculpting while burning fat and listening to beats to get your groove on. Warren, 426Fitness.com

7

Pilates to the Core

Photography by Brian DeMello

You may spend time in an office with a trickling waterfall and a soft couch to work through your control issues, but you can walk into a Pilates studio and onto a mat, tower reformer, Pilates chair, or jump board and take charge without consequence. studio47 Pilates’s Reformer Pilates classes will tone muscle without bulk, strengthen your core, increase flexibility, improve posture, and unite your body and mind. Warren, Studio47Pilates.com

8

En Garde!

The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the sword will give you a hell of a workout. Take a swing at fencing with RI Fencing’s seven-week class series and learn a sport that challenges both body and mind. Aside from working the muscles in your arms, legs, and core, fencing teaches precision, discipline, and self-respect and delivers empowerment while promoting endurance, strength, and coordination. An Olympic sport of precision and passion, fencing is an all-around body do-gooder. East Providence, RIFAC.com

9

Sweat it Out

Nothing bad ever comes from being hot and sweaty. Turn up the heat at Rhode Island Hot Yoga for Bikram yoga – a therapeutic sequence of 26 poses and two breathing exercises done in a 100- to 105-degree room with 40 to 50 percent humidity. The class is designed to work your body through its full range of motion and develop strength, balance, and flexibility. Did I mention it’s hot? With quick adjustment to the temps, you’ll be thankful (and become addicted) to the post-yoga glow that Bikram gives you. Bristol, RhodeIslandHotYoga.com

10

Go With the Flow

While the goal of yoga is to create space to get mentally unstuck, it doesn’t hurt your social media stream to post a beautiful backbend or two. Practice your magic at Synergy Power Yoga’s Hot Power Vinyasa and open your entire body and mind in this challenging, 90-minute flow. Based on the Baptiste Power Vinyasa method and influenced by many others, this heated class (which includes arm balances, inversions, and deep back bends) will take you on an energetic journey that nourishes the entire body. Put Up Your Dukes

Sometimes we work out so that we don’t punch people in the face. At ICON Boxing Club, we work out and learn how to throw punches at people in the face (but still don’t actually punch them). Experience authentic boxing techniques in a high-energy atmosphere for an all-around kickass workout (have you ever seen an out-of-shape boxer?). Learn offensive and defensive moves in hand-to-hand combat while gaining strength, endurance, and an invaluable skill. Bristol, ICONBoxingClub.com

Spin Right ‘Round

There are endless ways to release endorphins, but a lot of them involve emptying your wallet, hoarding chocolate from your kids, or a hangover. Chase that high without consequence or regret in the fast-paced spin classes at Cycology Studio. Join any of the entertaining, active, and cleverly named classes (such as Abnormal Cycology, Positive Cycology, and Kinetic Cycology, just to name a few) for an hour of loud music, hard work, and a dose of guilt-free indulgence. Tiverton, CycologyStudioInc.com

15

If dance is the hidden language of the soul, then Zumba is a conversation your body will want to have. Join Shape It Up Fitness for a calorie-burning dance fitness party that fuses Latin and international music to create a dynamic, exciting, and motivating workout. Zumba is a mixture of body-sculpting movements combined with easy-to-follow dance steps where mixed beats and rhythms guide your feet for an all-over workout. East Providence, ShapeItUpNutritionFitness.com

14

Pure Pilates

Joseph Pilates, inventor of Pilates as we know it today, claimed that the mind, when housed inside a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power. Harness your power at Pilates RI, where classes are based on the original classical work of Joseph, known as The Pilates Method. Increase strength, stability, and joint mobility, improve posture, and prevent injuries with this invigorating form of mind-clearing and body-pleasing exercise. Bristol and East Providence, PilatesRI.com

Ride the Rhythm

Let’s be real: we don’t always turn that dial up on a spin bike when the instructor tells us to (okay, maybe that’s just me). But the Rhythmic class at LuxeCycle makes staying the course just a little more attainable. This spin class goes beyond physicality – moving you musically and emotionally to connect mind and body – and combines upper body movements with hand weights to enhance the overall experience. They say abs are made in the kitchen, but when you spend an hour alternating between core-blasting exercises on the TRX suspension straps and body-sculpting isometric training on Barre, I’m pretty sure abs can be made at Fitness Fusion, too. TRX Barre Fusion is the perfect 50/50 combination of two disciplines that utilize your abdominals to stabilize the movements while keeping the impact on your joints to a minimum. A circuit of strength and endurance, these quick sessions done at your own pace will get your sweat on and leave plenty of time to get back to your social life. SALT, which stands for Simplicity, Accountability and Lifestyle Therapy, also offers treadmills, a weight room, and personal training. Swansea, SALTFitnessCafe.com

Water is 800 times denser than air. So it only makes sense to jump in and embrace the resistance with a workout that’s low in impact and high on enjoyment. Aqua Aerobics at Pods Swimming will give you a strength and cardio session that will tone and sculpt your body while burning calories without knee pain. Plus, you don’t have to worry about staying in the lane. East Providence, PodsSwimming.com

Seated in Style O&G Studio’s luxe furnishings are now on view at a new Barrington showroom The East Bay may be short on furniture shops, but with the opening of O&G Studio’s stylish street-level storefront you can add one more to the list. The 1,200-square-foot space on Maple Avenue in Barrington caters to designers and customers looking to experience firsthand the brand’s high-quality modern heirloom pieces. “This was a move to create a more accessible and inspiring presence right here in Rhode Island where we call home, “ says co-founder Sara Ossana. Ossana and her co-founder Jonathan Glatt,

both RISD grads and New England transplants, have been making their timeless furnishings in the East Bay for almost a decade. “There’s such a concentration of creative talent in the area and we can’t help but want to be a part of this exciting new wave of American design coming out of New England,” says Glatt. The new showroom is larger than the company’s previous one in the same building as its Warren factory, and features the brand’s iconic Windsor chairs, settees and benches, tables, lighting, and mirrors. “Our pieces play nice with objects

around them and can complement a huge range of styles, while also making a statement on their own,” says Ossana. In addition to showcasing their furniture and accessories at the new space, the company also plans to host special events throughout the year to support the local creative community.

So much of your line is based in aromatherapy. Are you trying to create a spa experience at home? When we were roommates, Viana would always hang eucalyptus in the showers during flu season. That eventually inspired the creation of our Sinus Blend Shower Melts, made with eucalyptus and camphor essential oils. We then created the Calming Blend for winding down at the end of the night, and added Energizing Blend to give an extra burst to people who like to shower in the morning. What’s the theory behind your gem-infused scents? Witches have used crystals for centuries, including infusing crystals into collected water and letting it sit for a full moon. We borrowed

that idea to make a roll-on perfume: each crystal – amethyst, onyx, citrine, quartz, and aventurine – is paired with aromatherapy that mirrors its metaphysical properties. Tell us more about your Coffee Eye Serum, made with coffee from The Nitro Cart. We love using caffeine in our products: it promotes circulation, bringing blood to the surface of your skin and helping new cell growth. For a product like our Coffee Eye Serum, it’s important to have caffeine as an ingredient to give it the power to get rid of puffy under-eye circles. What’s special for February? We launched a Love Potion Basket for Valentine’s Day, only available until February 9. There is a Potion Body Scrub (Lemon Lavender, Nitro Coffee, or Orange Coconut), a Rose Quartz Lotion Bar (lavender or rose) with a rose quartz inside, a live plant, and a White Tea & Ginger Homebody candle inside a cute copper basket.

After realizing that the cosmetic industry wasn’t regulated as heavily as they’d thought, artist Katie Bouchard and musician Viana Newton started making their own natural skin care products: “We wanted to create a line that was totally transparent about ingredients and utilized a sort of old world method.” Their line, Potion, is now available all over Rhode Island, including at The Pantry at Avenue N in Rumford.

The Art of Country Living A couple found a bucolic home in the woods of Portsmouth to fill with their family’s paintings

Most house hunters connect with a home for what it offers on the inside, whether it be a chef’s grade kitchen, sprawling open floor plan, or light-drenched living spaces. For Kristin and Bob MacMannis, it was the outside of their Portsmouth home that sealed the deal – specifically, the bucolic backyard. “When we found out our neighborhood backed up to the old Vanderbilt farmland protected by the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, we were all in!” Kristin explains. “The backyard gave us the privacy we longed for after seven years living on campus at St. George’s School, where my husband taught.” The land reminded Kristin of her own childhood, when playing in the woods

room, four-bath home perched amidst pastoral surroundings has some outstanding and unique features itself, including a basement (which the couple had finished as a play space for their children), a private in-law suite, and an impressive side entry boasting 18-foot ceilings and exposed beams, which previously served as the laundry room but was quickly reimagined. “This room was way too special for laundry, shoes, and hockey equipment, so we turned it into a funky library and it’s my favorite room in the house,” Kristin reveals. “Eventually, we will add a built-in bookcase with a ladder going up to the A-frame storage space, which we will convert into a cozy reading nook for the kids.” Kristin’s great-uncle, an artist, was a major influence on her personal style and she credits him with sparking her passion for art at a very young age. Today, almost every room of the couple’s home contains at least one of his paintings, along with other pieces she has collected through the Newport Art Museum’s annual Wet Paint event.

“We like our aesthetic to be a story about our family – past and present – through art in its many shapes and forms,” she explains. “I want my home to be cozy and warm but I also want it to provoke people’s imaginations and wonder. I love it when people ask me questions about the random things we have on display, from the teacup collection in our dining room to the sideboard with hand-carved griffins that we turned [into a] media stand in our family room.” Her grandmother’s old record player is the cornerstone of the living room. “We’ve had some fun nights in that room with friends and family. Its lack of modern media is like a much-needed step back in time.” Kristin has also relied on other local shops and galleries to enhance the home. Among her favorites is Kristen Coates in Newport. “Kristen has amazing art and home decor but the best quality of her gallery is her honesty. She lets clients take home art and live with it for a few days to see how it works in the space, and if it doesn’t work,

she tells her clients. For that, I’ll be forever loyal because sometimes my aesthetic can be overwhelming.” She also finds inspiration at William Vareika Fine Arts on Newport’s Bellevue Avenue: “Bill has a spectacular eye for art!” Across the Newport Pell Bridge, Kristin has sourced many pieces at Re Antiques and Interiors in North Kingstown, including a steer’s skull, which is now mounted in the library, and a hand-carved buffet in the kitchen. “I could spend hours exploring Re,” she admits. “Make sure to check out the hidden treasures in the basement!” For guests, the MacMannis home is pretty special too. “Our friends and family were amazing sports to put up with some of the ‘guest rooms’ we had while we were on campus at St. George’s,” Kristin says. “We were used to going to sleep with the sounds of teenagers echoing through the walls, but asking visitors to dive into our ‘dorm life’ wasn’t easy. But they always rolled with it. Now, when friends and family come to visit, they have their own private suite. They earned it!”

A Sea of Comfort On a frigid night at Bywater in Warren, the kitchen staff wore flat caps and beanies. One of the waitresses was sporting a hat with a pom-pom. But as chilly as it was outside, the Bywater’s dining room was toasty and welcoming. There’s something special about coming in from the cold into a warm restaurant you’ve been looking forward to trying out. Bywater has a hip interior – a gray and black color palette, with Edison lights hanging over angular floorboards. I liked the letter box window to the kitchen, offering a hint of the hustle. One of Bywater’s owners hails from Ireland, and I started off the meal with Irish soda bread, which was “bang on,” as my cousin in Ballintober says. I had to wait a bit for the butter to be spreadable, but that gave me time to play with the small pepper mill. I had the Columna Albarino white wine ($9), a nice pairing for fish from Galicia, while my wife bested me with a Santa

Cruz ‘le cigare blanc’ blend ($10), which was subtle, like a crisp pear. The concise menu showcases Bywater’s raw bar, but with the restaurant’s front steps covered in ice, we didn’t want anything chilled. No, this was a night for warmer dishes: we began with cream of broccoli soup ($8) and a brothy bowl of steamed littlenecks ($14). There were more exotic things on the menu, but it’s a real test to make these old favorites stand out. Both were delicious, but the steamed littlenecks were some of the best I’ve ever had, with a velvety, garlicky broth. The cream of broccoli soup was heavy on the cream, which is just fine this time of year. I fished for florets and caught some tender little ones. For our mains, we had Faroe Island salmon ($27) in a cream sauce, and pappardelle with braised pork ($25). Once again, while both were enjoyable, it was the seafood that I’d come back for. The salmon itself

was generously portioned and delicious, and I appreciated the care they’d put into each mild ingredient: perfectly cooked fingerlings, glassy with butter; bok choy, wilted but still crunchy; and vinegar-infused maitake mushrooms. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, and we foresaw defeat about halfway through the pappardelle. Silky sauced ribbons snaked around dark kale and braised pork, and cherry tomatoes popped in the mouth in a burst of sugar and acid. I always find room for dessert, and despite the bitter cold on the other side of the window pane, we were warm enough for an ice cream taster ($7), selecting cardamom, chocolate, and brown bread. I didn’t care for the brown bread’s texture of swirled crumbs, but the others were a hit: the cardamom reminded me of gulab jamun, a classic Indian dessert, and the chocolate

CONNOISSEUR

Sip, Swirl, Sniff, and Savor Grapes & Grains’ Matthew Amaral on under-the-radar wines you have, that we won’t find elsewhere locally? Marc Berry, wine buyer at Grapes and Grains, recommends the following: Lieu Dit Sauvignon Blanc, $26. This wine is a combination of both tank and barrel fermentations that are aged in neutral barrels, made with grapes sourced from three vineyards in Happy Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley: Grassini, McGinley, and Star Lane. Herbaceous and bright, with notes of lemongrass and lemon zest. La Selve “Petite Selve,” $17. The Petite Selve is a wine of medium body with intense aromas of red fruit and truffles. On the palate it is dry, fruity, and supple. Best paired with braised meat dishes and white meats. Fritz Müller Perlwein, $19. Perlwein is Germany’s version of Italian prosecco. This refreshing wine, made from Müller-Thurgau grapes, has fresh green and floral notes, balanced by an earthiness, with a longer finish.

Matthew Amaral walked a long road to open Grapes & Grains, Barrington’s first package store after a long, dry stretch. At the end of three years of work, the “boozy pioneer” (his words) opened a store that offers uniquely curated wine, beer, and spirits and draws on his experience opening Capital Grille restaurants across the country. We talked wine tastings and why it’s so important to give back. What makes Grapes & Grains different? We stock the store thinking of these words: rare, vintage, small batch, natural, sustainable, craft, and local. Shoppers here can browse a unique inventory that includes more than 60 wines for under $13, a collection of coveted Pappy Van Winkle bourbons, and hundreds of craft beers, which can be dropped into build-your-own four or six packs. We also have food from Hope & Main and an expanding barware selection.

Do you really deliver? We do – and if you order before noon, we can deliver same-day. Delivery is free to Barrington, Warren, and Bristol with a $75 purchase, and to the rest of Rhode Island if you spend $150. For smaller purchases, we still deliver for a fee. We also offer a halfcase discount, which is unusual in the East Bay. I started it for the holidays, but people love it, so we’re going to continue. Tell us about your community initiatives. Grapes & Grains gives back to the community by partnering with local organizations and donating a percentage of sales from events to the charities. This past January, we partnered with the East Bay Coalition for the Homeless for the 6th annual Taste of The East Bay at Hope & Main. I also chair the Barrington Business Association.

Udder-ly New Ownership A Barrington family takes over Munroe Dairy Since 1881, Munroe Dairy has delivered farm-fresh milk in glass bottles to front doorsteps across the region. After 137 years of service, Munroe still specializes in small-batch milk and reusable vessels. After generations of ownership by the Armstrong family (who purchased the dairy from the Munroes in 1936), an alliance of local families has jointly purchased the company. The dairy will move forward with Tracy and Bill Daugherty of Barrington as the new managing partners. Much of the company’s traditional operations will remain intact. Customers can still expect to see the charming cow-spotted delivery trucks traveling about town, and the dairy will retain all of its 72 employees. The Daughertys will continue to grow the business and invest in new products, services, and equipment, including a mobile app and a commercial kitchen, which is tentatively slated to open this spring. The Dairy will also explore new partnerships with local food and beverage outfits and expand Sacred Cow, its line of baked goods. East Providence, CowTruck.com

A Comfier La Collina La Collina at the Hillside Country Club has undergone a conceptual overhaul. Until now, the restaurant’s look was stoic and understated. Post-remodel, La Collina boasts an impressive floor-to-ceiling gas fireplace made of stack stone, granite-top tables and booth seating throughout. Guests can relax in luxurious club chairs and enjoy fireside libations as they take in spectacular views of the golf course. Several menu items have been added, and the restaurant is now serving Sunday brunch. They’ve also introduced new promotions and events such as karaoke, a weekly surf and turf special, craft beer nights, and live music every weekend. Check online for a calendar of upcoming events. Rehoboth, HillsideCountryClub.com

Take tapas to the next level. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Stoneacre Tapas is featuring Pintxos and Paella. Pintxos (sometimes known as pinchos) consist of a small slice of bread topped with various ingredients. Traditionally, these small snacks are skewered or pierced with a toothpick. Just like tapas, they’re perfect for sharing, sampling, and socializing. For $20, customers can choose any Pintxos plus an individual size paella. Fend off the winter blues this month with the Iberian atmosphere and halfpriced bottles of wine. Newport, StoneacreTapas.com

Bluewater Bar + Grill joined the exciting East Bay dining scene in 2011 with a fresh take on contemporary dining. Chef-owner Brian Thimme, a culinary professional with more than 20 years of experience, envisioned a restaurant that combined his passion for locally sourced foods with his love of family.

The expansive restaurant, which is nestled near the Barrington Yacht Club on the Tyler Point Peninsula, offers gorgeous waterfront views. Open year-round for dinner seven nights a week and seasonally for lunch Thursday through Sunday, Bluewater features New England and American farm-to-table classics.

You won’t find another restaurant like Dante’s Kitchen in Rhode Island. The breakfast and lunch hot spot in East Greenwich serves up delicious and authentic Southern comfort food. “In my previous career I had an amazing op-

portunity to travel and experience the Southern culture,” owner Lisa Altieri says. “It was this niche that I wanted to fill here in the Ocean State. I felt like Main Street was the perfect place to blend those flavors.”

Taste Test Pour on th e Ro m a n c e Dinner and chocolate are Valentine’s favorites, but nothing whispers “romantic evening” like a bottle of fine wine or champagne. On the hunt for fermented perfection, we asked some East Bay wine vendors about their most seductive selections.

Ferreira’s Wine and Spirits, Portsmouth Recommendation: Duval-Leroy Rosé Prestige “This well is a premier cru – 90 percent Pinot Noir and 10 percent Chardonnay. The wine is pale pink in color with raspberry and citrus notes. It does sell for $65.99, but it’s worth it for a special dinner.” -Don Murphy, Assistant Manager

Grapes & Grains, Barrington

Brickyard Wine & Spirits, Barrington

Recommendation: R. Dumont Brut Rosé “R. Dumont Brut Rosé displays a nose of sundried raspberries, nuts, and tantalizing passion fruit. Ripe red fruits with notes of currant and strawberry are layered over by mellow toasty brioche and cleansing minerality. Pair with chèvre, candied nuts, tiramisu, or that romantic someone.” -Matthew Amaral, Owner

Recommendation: Banfi Rosa Regale “These are the perfect bubbles for Valentine’s Day. It’s a seductive aperitif, but it could also be great for after dinner. It has a beautiful nose of floral roses and strawberries, and it goes well with chocolate. It has a sense of sweetness, but it’s not too sweet. Even the bottle is beautiful.” -Charlie Pagliuca, Owner
